W: novel spoilers, Xianle arc spoilers? Xie Lian past spoilers? Idk how much of a spoiler it is actually
Tumblr media
The room is dark and foggy. You could smell the strong lotus and sandalwood aroma in the air. The dozens of candles around the room being the only light sources to the five people in the room. Mei y/n was kneeling on the floor before the Heavenly Emperor's, Jun Wu’s statue, praying before him with his three other friends like everyday, at the same time. He had his eyes closed, hands on his knees and mind in praying trance. His friends, Xie Lian, Mu Qing and Feng Xin weren't that concentrated. The three behind him kept opening their eyes and looking at y/n. Everytime Xie Lian heard Mei Nianqing, the head Guoshi of the Xianle Kingdom and Mei y/n's father, approaching he closed his eyes again and pretended to pray and meditate. Feng Xin and Mu Qing weren't that concerned about Mei Nianqing and secretly kept admiring his son. Sensing the two's distraction, behind them, Mei Nianqing slapped the back of their heads with his palm. Both whispered-yelled like from one mouth, "OW! WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!" Xie Lian snickered beside them. Mei y/n bowed his head to the Heavenly Emperor's statue, signaling the others that he had thanked the god and had finished. He turned around to look at the other four men behind him, "I'm finished, Guoshi." The priest nodded, "very well. The lesson has ended. Go then you four, the rest of the day is free." All four thanked and bowed before him before leaving the room. Mei Nianqing shook his head, disappointed.
The four walked out of the Holy Royal Pavilion towards the cherry field, spending the rest of their day together. The Crown Prince and the son of the state preceptor walked at front, hands hooked together. They laughed about Feng Xin and Mu Qing getting scolded by Mei Nianqing, AGAIN. The latters walked behind them, leaving a respectful space between. They blushed and tried to defend themselves, also trying to hide their jealousy towards Xie Lian. They reached their usual relaxing place, a red cherry tree from which hung a simple swing. Mei y/n let go of Xie Lian's hand and ran towards the swing, hopping onto it. He started to move his legs gently, watching the others sit against the tree. They sat in silence for a moment, the swinging of the swing being the only sound. "Finally, some peace and quiet. Qi Rong has been a pain in the ass the whole day. Someday, I swear I'm going to snap," Mei y/n sighed. He had been Prince Xiao Jing's servant for years, appointed by his father. Only near Xie Lian and the other two he could address the young Prince so casually and actually talk ill about him. The other three didn't mind, rather they agreed with him. Xie Lian felt bad and sighted, "Don't worry, I'm going to 'talk' to him. I can't see you being tortured by him like that. I can ask Guoshi again to make you my servant, maybe he will allow this time?" Mei y/n hopped off the swing and sat between Mu Qing's legs, against his strong chest. The young boy blushed at it but didn't dare or want to push him away, he took a lock of his hair and started playing with it. Mei y/n smiled and closed his eyes, relaxing in the calming silence with his dear friends.

a few of y’all have asked me about new life begins, and i’m procrastinating over work so............
BASICALLY this story revolves around the royal family of xinchuan (head of the nine states). xinchuan has a tradition wherein the other eight states send eligible women over to marry the xinchuan princes. the show opens with all these women coming into xinchuan for this selection
this is our main character li wei
Tumblr media
bbg does Not want to be selected as a bride for any of the princes. she comes from jichuan (one of the least wealthy states, most of them are farmers) wherein people marry for love and men aren’t allowed to have concubines, she is Not Into this xinchuan polygamy bs, and is doing all she can to be sent back home asap so she can live her chill life
Tumblr media
this is the sixth prince yin zheng, unloved (for now!) and mostly unnoticed (also for now!!) son of an unfavoured concubine. he’s introduced as being sickly and of little note in the political field. he mostly gets along with his brothers by virtue of having little interaction with them and keeping a real low profile
this boy is way smarter than he presents to outsiders!! he knows that the least favourable political marriage will be assigned to him, so he figures he might as well get ahead of it and voluntarily ask for the nominee from jichuan to be his wife
li wei ends up yin zheng’s concubine!!! which is the worst!!! not only does she have to conform to this xinchuan polygamy bs, she’s not even his main wife!!! she’s depressed for a few days until she catches wind that yin zheng only has a few weeks left to live (fake news) and it just kickstarts a whole bunch of hilarious shenanigans in which she tries to be nice to him before he dies and she gets to go home to jichuan as a widow
cue yin zheng (who doesn’t know what li wei is thinking) going: she’s??? nice to me???? mayhaps..........she be.........in love with me??????
Tumblr media
(uhhhh because she’s adorable???? i like her)
ANYWAY y’all get the drift, it’s the whole arranged marriage, strangers to lovers, pining after my spouse vibe that i absolutely love!!!
but it’s not just that!!! it’s also that the female characters are all well-written and the friendships between all of them are so cute!!
Tumblr media
first left is shangguan jing, fifth prince’s wife! she’s from danchuan which is a matriarchal society. she’s good at martial arts and very straightforward. does not really want to be married to xinchuan (much less to the fifth prince who starts off liking someone else), but is Doing Her Duty. i am SO INVESTED in her relationship with the fifth prince ahhhh, he’s a wimp (affectionate) who, this far in the show, has come to love his wife and is fretting constantly over how to make her happy/make her love him
first right is hao jia! she’s the second prince’s concubine and li wei’s bff. she’s sweet and well-natured and essentially Good At Everything. the second prince is kind of a dick with obvious dv tendencies, but he’s the eldest son of the emperor’s wife and next in line for the throne. i am just HOPING we get to see hao jia go off on him one day soon 😭 (side note: i’m actually also curious about the second prince’s wife - i wonder if she and hao jia will team up to get rid of the second price ugh)
Tumblr media
this is yuan ying junzhu, my li wei’s yin zheng’s wife. hoooo boy folks, when the emperor ordered yin zheng to marry her against his Very Strong Objection, i thought we were going to start in on the angst and the whole jealous wife arc, but!!! she’s got zero interest in him, and they decide that she’ll basically stay at the manor as his advisor/li wei’s tutor! she 100% likes li wei more than she likes yin zheng lbr
not pictured but also a+++ characters that i love: the third prince’s wife + his harem of concubines (he’s named them all after the 24 traditional solar terms); the seventh prince and his wife (both of whom are adorable and just try to stay low-key and out of trouble); song wu²; all the servants at the sixth prince’s manor
ANYWAY this show is light-hearted and fun and an absolute delight to watch!! it’s been awhile since we’ve had a romcom-ish cdrama that’s had actual budget to produce something to this quality 💖 11/10 would rec!!!
where to watch: iqiyi // viki // youtube status:  this updates every sunday to wednesday (local chinese time), with 2 eps being released every day. 22/40 eps have aired so far, i think iqiyi subs are up to date with the current airing schedule but i can’t be sure? someone correct me if i’m wrong!

why there is women in army ?
is there lack of men in argent or something ?
Tumblr media
13th century BCE (THIRTEEN CENTURIES BEFORE THE BIRTH OF CHRIST) – Lady Fu Hao, consort of the Chinese emperor Wu Ding, led 3,000 troops into battle during the Shang dynasty. THAT'S OLD AS FUCK Also guess what: She is credited fighting the earliest recorded large-scale ambush in Chinese history. With up to 13,000 troops and the important generals Zhi and Hou Gao serving under her, she was also the most powerful military leader of her time. This highly unusual status is confirmed by the many weapons, including great battle-axes, unearthed from her tomb. One of Wu Ding's other wives, Fu Jing, also participated in military expeditions. So i guess we can say that Wu Ding got that thang for strong women, like many of the other dudes in my discord server lmao
I wanted to show you the earliest record of a woman leading an army, now let's see actual combatants.
For some reason, the nomadic horse riders, since the times of the Scythians, had women in the ranks. That means the guys that almost toppled civilization if it wasnt for the Assyrians, the Mongols, Turks, Huns, Xiongnu, and moreeee, way more.
You should also read the Book of Shang, and see what it details in regards to women in the army. "...he recommended dividing the members of an army into three categories; strong men, strong women, and the weak and old of both sexes. He recommended that the strong men serve as the first line of defence, that the strong women defend the forts and build traps, and that the weak and elderly of both sexes control the supply chain. He also recommended that these three groups not be intermingled, on the basis that doing so would be detrimental to morale."
And this is all before I even get to the more well known instances shieldmaidens from the vikings, Onna-Bushi (or Musha) women of the samurai, or Celtic and Germanic warrior women.
Course, i grabbed most of this from wikipedia with just a quick search lmao
I just wanted some facts and historical instances before I could end it with "Cause I want to have women in the army cause it's my story"
Plus, the Blessings are an equalizer, as the Sword Saint Wythela will show you in the story. With the advent of so many women being able to fight with a strength that surpasses that of a normal man, of course these women will champion female rights and ensure a more equal society, and that's what Belthean women did. Even in Nareth before Belthean culture dominated there are instances of women leading, like in the Carsthe dynasty or Remiel's grandmother herself, Queen Calmiel.

Oh, brother...aka keeping it in the (royal) family
I recently realized that for some reason “multiple brothers one girl” seems to be a popular category in costume dramas. I am not sure why such sharing is necessary in a polygamous society for fancy royals each of whom can get himself a whole harem, but I am not complaining that it appears any remake of the Hollywood classic “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” would clearly be changed into “One Bride for Seven Brothers, and Some of the Brothers Spit Blood and Die” if it were a cdrama. Here are some of the dramas at issue.
Liu Shi Shi appears to be the queen of this subgenre to such an extent that I am vaguely wondering if it’s in her contract. We are gonna start with THREE of her dramas:
Bu Bu Jing Xin - Liu Shi Shi has not one, not two, but THREE hot royal brothers, played by Nicky Wu, Kevin Cheng and Lin Gengxin, pine for her time-traveling self. Since this is an exquisite (no, seriously, it’s amazing) period piece about loss and longing, she ends up with none of them, instead of a hot vagely-’cesty gangbang as one might expect from that set-up.
Tumblr media
Lost Love in Times - poor Liu Shi Shi, she’s a sexy witch having to pick between William Chan and his shady brother Joe Xu. To make it even trippier, the two actors look like each other, to really hammer the whole “siblings want her” theme.
Tumblr media
The Imperial Doctress - why bust what’s not broken? It’s the true and tried Liu Shi Shi and hot royal brothers formula. She’s a doctor who spends most of her time practicing medicine, escaping barbarians and creating feminism, not noticing that as she pines for one royal brother played by Huang Xuan, another royal brother, played by infinitely hotter Wallace Huo, is pining for her.
Tumblr media
Gong/Jade Palace Lock Heart - if Liu Shi Shi is the queen of that set up, Feng Shao Feng is the king, what with this and Military Seal, both of which star Yang Mi. Clearly, there are worse ways to make a career than stealing Yang Mi from a royal brother. Here, Yang Mi is a spunky time traveler in the middle of Kang Xi’s sons’ fight for the throne. She first falls for Four but ends up with Eight. In between, she offers to bang Four to save Eight as one does. Gives a whole new meaning to sharing is caring and “have you brought enough for the entire class?”
Tumblr media
Legend of the Military Seal - Yang Mi and FSF strike again. FSF is madly in love with his brother’s wife, and since she’s not afflicted by blindness, she shares his feelings. Surprisingly, but delightfully, happy ending ensues.
Tumblr media
Who Rules the World - more like which brother rules awesome Zhao Lusi’s heart. Going by the rule of “hottest brother wins,” Yang Yang gets the girl in a drama that is pretty yum yum.
Tumblr media
Colourful Bone - one hot seriously whumped out royal brother and one whiny immature one, oh who should the heroine pick? This drama stands for the proposition that you should protect and save abused people, especially if they are hot men, since they will always turn out to be an emperor in disguise. This drama btw is one giant kinkfest for yours truly.
Tumblr media
The Eternal Love - you could make THREE whole seasons out of timetravel and brothers into the same girl, who knew.
Tumblr media
Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty - if you’ve seen Gong or BBJX, you know the drill. Horde of queued brothers queueing for the heroine.
Tumblr media
(Mine and all my brothers’, that is -Ed.)
Princess Jieyou - Yuan Hong narrowly escaped the curse of fancying his brother’s woman in BBJX, being about the only sibling not in love with LSS in that one. But clearly, you can’t fight fate and shortly thereafter he’s got to be a sister-in-law luster in a drama of his very own. He is a barbarian general who falls in love with a woman only to discover she’s to marry his brother. Angst and deliciousness and eventual happy ending (the husband fulfilled the uglier brother’s duty by eventually kicking the bucket.)
Tumblr media
The Promise of Chang’an - if you want to watch brothers with the same woman but no happy ending, and have already watched BBJX, I present this recent drama where Cheng Yi gets to, as always, suffer beautifully watching the woman he loves marry his annoying brother. Pretty much everyone dies at the end of this one, going off to a great big threesome in the sky.
Tumblr media
Twisted Fate of Love - will Sun Yi pick the delicate Tan Jianci or the sexy as fuck bastard that is Jin Han? Being a smart woman, she picks the latter and my hormones rejoice.
Tumblr media
Go Princess Go - this is a drama that parodied every cliche there is, so why not brothers into one woman? Who is actually a man in a woman’s body making it even more delightful!
Tumblr media
Ashes of Love - even being divine, with women from three separate realms available will seemingly not prevent love interests being a scarce resource leading to sibling love rivalry. Deng Lun and Luo Yunxi duke it out ostensibly for Yang Zi but in reality for who can suffer more prettily. Deng Lun might get the girl, but LYX wins the suffering crown, so it all more or less evens out.
Tumblr media
Princess Silver - are siblings in love with the same woman not spicy enough for you? How about TWINS in love with the same woman? One awesome (Aarif Rahman) and one psychotic (Jing Chao) want our heroine and both marry her at one point. Only the awesome one gets to bang her though. (But the psychotic one gets to stick meathooks through his brother in compensation for not being able to stick...ummm...meathook through the heroine, so it’s all OK.)
Tumblr media
Secret of the Three Kingdoms - and now we are gonna go REAL PERV! If twins are not enough for you, seekers of strong sensations, how about IDENTICAL twins? Ma Tianyu replaces his dead identical twin brother as the last Han emperor and gets to woo Wan Qian (whose plan it was in the first place.) At least she doesn’t need to get used to a new face?
Tumblr media
We are gonna end here and not get into father and son sharing the same woman a la Empress of China.
Tumblr media
(Congrats to Aarif Rahman for getting to bang both his brother’s and his father’s wives on screen. That is an interesting niche.)

In the Romance, it's stated that Guan Yu left behind three main commanders--Mi Feng, Fu Shiren, and Pan Jun--to block Wu so he could attack Fan. Fu Shiren and Mi Feng are well known, but can you tell us about the third guy, Pan Jun? All the Romance says of him is that he's kind of a jerk and that Guan Yu should have left a different officer (it names Zhao Lei in particular) to block Wu instead.
Let's review everyone here.
SGZ 45.4 tells us that Shi Ren (Junyi) was from Guangyang. He was assigned to guard Gong'an under Guan Yu but betrayed him to Sun Quan. Guan Yu's biography (SGZ 36.1) concurs with this. It inserts the character 傅 in front of his name (leading to the misnomer Fushi Ren). SGZ 2 and SGZ 54.3 both agree with SGZ 45, so we can conclude that the character 傅 is a corruption or an error.
Mi Fang was the brother of Mi Zhu (SGZ 38.2). Their sister was married to Liu Bei before he fled to Jing province. At the time of the Fan campaign, Mi Fang was the head of Nan canton, with his headquarters at Jiangling (which he shared with Guan Yu). His family had a reputation for being skilled at the horse and bow, and he successfully helped suppress a revolt after defecting to Wu, so he was not without some talents.
Pan Jun was by far the most important and interesting of these men. His biography (SGZ 61.1) is a bit on the longer side.
Pan Jun was from Wuling in the unfashionable part of Jing. He distinguished himself as a scholar when he was young and became a military adviser in Jiangxia (where he would have served Huang Zu. He was later made magistrate of Xiangyang, making him a figure of substantial note at Liu Biao's court. When Liu Bei took over, Pan Jun became one his advisers. During the campaign for Yi province, Pan Jun was left in Jing to manage the province's affairs.
Pan Jun initially refused to serve Sun Quan when he annexed Jing but changed his mind after receiving a personal visit. He subsequently advised Sun Quan in securing the territory. When Sun Quan took the imperial title, Pan Jun was made one of the Nine Ministers. Eventually he became Minister of Ceremonies (which Wu appears to have treated as the chief of the Excellencies), a title he retained for the rest of his life.
The most notable exploit of Pan Jun's career was a campaign in the 230s. Over the course of several years he subdued the various tribes of western Jing, bringing the territory firmly under Sun Quan's control. Many of Wu's future commanders first saw serious campaigning during this episode.
However, Pan Jun and Sun Quan started to fall out later in life. Sun Quan began listening to corrupt officials and Pan Jun had no patience for that. Back when he was just a military advisor he had executed the corrupt chief of Shaxian. He wrote repeated letters to Sun Quan warning him about the unscrupulous officials at his court but to no avail. A particularly powerful official, Lu Yi, tried to have Pan Jun ousted but failed.
Eventually Pan Jun got fed up with being nice. He traveled to Jianye attempting to simply murder Lu Yi himself and face the consequences. However, Lu Yi avoided the meeting. Soon, the officials were able to prevail upon Sun Quan to punish Lu Yi, who was duly executed. Nevertheless, the rift between Sun Quan and his advisers never fully healed, and Pan Jun himself died not long after this.

Hi, do you read danmei? Favourites?
Hi! I’ve read quite a bit of danmei over the years and my absolute faves are two pretty 古早 (1990s/2000s era) novellas:
北京故事 Beijing Story(read it in Chinese here)— It was adapted into an explicitly queer movie called 蓝于 Lan Yu in 2001. It’s a poignant and tragic story about a decades-long relationship between a young entrepreneur and a college student set against the backdrop of the Tiananmen Square massacre and the economic miracle of the 1980s and 90s. (Yes, you read that right. And yes, it got made into a movie, with minimal censorship. The early 2000s were fun times in China.)
十年 Ten Years (read it in Chinese here) — It’s about a complicated and bittersweet decade-long relationship between two men who befriend each other in high school and come of age in early 2000s China (the early 2000s vibes are so on point in this novel ❤️). They end up together. But I’m not sure I’d call it a happy ending.
Nowadays my Chinese fandom reading consists of fic for fandom pairings like
瓶邪 pingxie ( Zhang Qiling x Wu Xie from 盗墓笔记 The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles) — the Chinese multi-chapter longfics in this fandom are breathtakingly good. If you can read Chinese, I can recommend a few.
玄亮 xuanliang (Liu Bei x Zhu Geliang historical RPF set in the three kingdoms era)
元白 yuanbai (Yuan Zhen x Bai Juyi historical RPF set in the late Tang dynasty)
And of course 笛花 dihua fic from 莲花楼 Mysterious Lotus Casebook. The novel is actually mainstream wuxia and not danmei.
I’ve read or tried to read most of the popular danmei novels on 晋江 Jinjiang in the mid and late 2010s, and here are a few I’d recommend (that don’t already have officially released tv dramas)
二哈和他的白猫师尊 Erha and his white cat shizun
将进酒 Jiang Jing Jiu
杀破狼 Sha Po Lang: If you can read Chinese, you should definitely check out this author (Priest). She really knows her way around a sentence and has a solid grasp of literary Chinese
(二哈 Erha and 杀破狼 Sha Po Lang were adapted to TV and then cancelled)
And here is one that has a TV drama adaptation but the book is still worth checking out if you can read Chinese:
鬓边不是海棠红 Winter Begonia: the atmosphere of the novel is very different from the tv drama (which I also adore). It’s a lot more 妖娆妩媚 coy and seductive. It’s really good.

Story-idea: Shizun only wants what's in your head
Crack pairs FTW! How about some Shizun/Shifu action?
OG!Shěn Qīngqiū/Meng Mo
This will be unrequited Luò Bīnghé/OG!Shěn Qīngqiū, just so you're warned, no relationship for the protagonist there.
Shěn Qīngqiū knew very early where his tastes lie with certainty. Attractive older men are his weakness, not that he ever could indulge this particular craving.
Wu Yanzi wasn't interested, which was probably for the best, but still disappointing. While the things he said to him after the Qiu massacre were hurtful and made Shen Jiu resentful, the bitterness was directed towards Qiu Janluo instead of his new master. Wu Yanzi just told him what's what after all. But afterwards he was surprisingly nice to be around a lot of the time. Sure, he taught him to rob (more than he already could), fight dirty (more effectively than he was already able to), kill and didn't actually teach him much cultivation (at least not the righteous path), but he was not really cruel to Shen Jiu. Shen Jiu was aware enough that the man would kill him, if he made trouble and was disobedient. But Wu Yanzi, for all his faults, knew that one can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. In this story, that's another thing he taught Shen Jiu and that will change things significantly.
This friendliness was deceitful and Shen Jiu knew. It still made him feel good, though. Wu Yanzi was not youthful as most cultivators, he looked to be in his mid-fifties, his demonic cultivation did not grant him immortality. But he was still attractive. All of this combined with horny teenager hormones made Shen Jiu drool over his master often enough. He was still more than ready to kill him for Yue Qi, though.
Wu Yanzi's teachings have helped him a lot over the years. Not with his cultivation, sadly. He is, however, very good with honey-coating his words to hide the poison. Guilt-tripping is another thing he's good at. Yuè Qīngyuán spilled his shame-filled, guilt-riddled secrets after barely a week. His brother truly is an idiot. His reckless, too gentle idiot, but still an idiot!
There were a lot of nasty rumors about Shen Jiu having seduced his way into the Qing Jing peak lord's good graces. None of that was true and Shen Jiu resented the gossip even more for the fact that his shizun would forever be a wet dream and nothing more.
His shizun was a dream. He was kind and full of warmth and had let himself age to a point were he looked to be in his late sixties to reflect his readiness to ascend to the next realm. Shen Jiu fell for him very hard almost immediately and his need to sleep anywhere but the dorms was not only because he wasn't comfortable surrounded by other men, but also because of his frequent wet dreams about his shizun.
Most mortal men in town are bland or ugly and immortals almost always look too young. With the exception of the Huan Hua palace master that is. But this particular man, while superficially polite, seems to dislike him, so no luck there either.
Fast forward, now he has Luò Bīnghé as disciple, a brat with an infuriatingly outstanding talent and entirely too little brains. It's almost as if he got himself a mini Liǔ Qīnggē, except that this one is also still a pushover. Teaching the little beast will be quite the challenge.
His method of dealing with the boy is a mixture of sweetly concealed insults mixed with a bit of encouragement and harsh training, as well as strict punishments for every small failure. A bit of gaslighting on the side, too. It's vexing as well as amusing for him to see Luò Bīnghé struggle to make sense of everything, only to succeed more than expected.
Then Shěn Qīngqiū goes into seclusion in the Lingxi caves. He manages to save Liu Qingge. Shěn Qīngqiū has learned how to subdue and treat someone who's experiencing a qi-deviation from Mu Qingfang. Just in case something bad might happen to Yuè Qīngyuán again. It was also very good to learn for his own shaky foundation and his regular pitfalls.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, they say. It seems to be true in Luò Bīnghé's case, because when Shěn Qīngqiū returns, he seems disgustingly excited to see his shizun again. He's even proud to be pitted against the demon elder during the invasion. Foolish boy, but very useful.
Then Shěn Qīngqiū is dragged into the dream realm with Luo Binghe. It's really annoying, especially because his disciple repeatedly fails to listen to his advice.
And then they meet Meng Mo.
The elder dream demon is pretty much the embodiment of Shěn Qīngqiū's dirty fantasies. And while Luò Bīnghé doesn't notice, Shěn Qīngqiū's desire is glaringly obvious to the demon elder. While Meng Mo generally hates humans and cultivators in particular, Shěn Qīngqiū' is interesting to him's reaction is rather intriguing. And it has Been. A. While. for Meng Mo, so why not have a little fun?
He sends Binghe into a deep sleep, then turns his full attention on Shen Qingqiu. The shared private dreamscape turns into something truly debauched...
Bīnghé is more infatuated with his shizun as well after his help in the dream realm. He's also very happy to hear that his shizun thinks not all demons are bad.
Actually Shen Qingqiu tells him that humans are just as evil as demons, there's not much difference, but Binghe misinterprets this. He offers to cook for his shizun and is overjoyed to have made a good enough impression to be allowed to move into the spare room beside the bamboo house. He vows to learn hard on Qing Jing peak and from Meng Mo as well to be able to protect his shizun. And to hopefully be one day worthy to court him.
In truth, Shěn Qīngqiū made him move into the spare room to have him close enough that Meng Mo is in range. It's obviously also best to treat the host of his lover well. While Bīnghé is training and dreams of a happy future with his shizun, said shizun is shagging his dream demon teacher in their own shared dreamscape. They briefly talk about Meng Mo changing hosts, but grudgingly agree that it's too risky. As a peak lord, Shen Qingqiu could be scrutinized more closely any time and both aren't sure carrying a dream demon around wouldn't catch the other peak lord's eyes. Luò Bīnghé, as a mere disciple, is far less likely to attract attention. At least for the time being.
Meng Mo is making fun of Liǔ Qīnggē's attempts at being friendly. He points out that the offerings of monster carcasses and frequent asks for sparring is more akin to demon courting than anything he ever saw from humans before. Weird, because the guy is fully human, Meng Mo checked. The last bit is a relief for Shěn Qīngqiū. He hopes that means the brute isn't actually trying to woo him all of a sudden and just has weird ideas about what constitutes as good gifts. Although, to be fair, the monster flesh is good for cultivation and make better gifts than he initially wanted to admit.
The disastrous Alliance Conference comes up. Bīnghé engages a Moon-Python-Rhinoceros, even though Shěn Qīngqiū orders him not to and the Endless Abyss opens. His seal breaks and Shěn Qīngqiū has a frantic conversation with Meng Mo, half past Bīnghé's head/mind, with Shěn Qīngqiū talking aloud and Meng Mo speaking in Shěn Qīngqiū's mind.
Shěn Qīngqiū asks whether he can conceal his demonic nature, to which Bīnghé and Meng Mo simultaneously answer no. Hiding him away until they are at Qing Jing again won't work until he learns how to conceal his nature on his own. Meng Mo tells Shen Qingqiu he will try to convince Bīnghé to jump into the Abyss to train, since he's reasonably sure he will survive there. Shěn Qīngqiū on the other hand wants Meng Mo to convince Bīnghé and then abandon him to stay in his mind instead, but inadvertently phrases it so that Bīnghé misunderstands that his shizun doesn't want him to leave because he doesn't want to lose him. Then they hear people call out close-by and Shěn Qīngqiū emphatically says to quickly come back to him and that he'll wait for him (meaning Meng Mo, obviously), then pushes Bīnghé into the Abyss.
Bīnghé is deeply confused why his beloved shizun threw him into the Abyss, if he doesn't want him to die. And he clearly doesn't, since he told him to come back! But why then? Meng Mo tells him that the other cultivators would've killed him on sight, obviously. He doesn't correct Bīnghé in his believe Shěn Qīngqiū meant Bīnghé with his last statements. It's not really a lie. After all, Bīnghé needs to return for Meng Mo to get back. He fails to notice that Bīnghé grows more and more determined to court Shěn Qīngqiū once he's back.
Cang Qiong is concerned. Everyone thinks Shěn Qīngqiū of all people mourns his disciple and most are weirded out by the change. Liǔ Qīnggē is more convinced he misunderstood his former rival's character. He and Yuè Qīngyuán try to cheer him up. Shěn Qīngqiū couldn't care less about Bīnghé, but is worried for Meng Mo.
Three years later Bīnghé comes back to Cang Qiong and proposes to his shizun. Shěn Qīngqiū and Meng Mo are both flabbergasted. Shěn Qīngqiū repeats his offer of being his host. Meng Mo actually leaves Bīnghé's mind and takes his lover's offer.
Bīnghé is surprised, then hurt and then absolutely furious. He tries to fight and kidnap his shizun and is met with the combined force of Yuè Qīngyuán, Liǔ Qīnggē, Shěn Qīngqiū and Meng Mo against him. He has to give up in the end, frustrated and heartbroken.
Yes, poor Binghe, no loving shizun to be found this time. I think it'll be funny, though.

Less Popular Danmei Character Tournament
CWs: death mention, murder mention, animal mention, r*bies mention, b*g/ins*ct mention, swearing, suggestive language
Wenren È from Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know
The MC of Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know, Wenren È, finds a book that details the world around him where he’s the second male lead / love interest who dies to protect the Female Lead / protagonist. He is not in love with her, and he can’t imagine dying for her as is; he also doesn’t understand why his subordinate, who supposedly likes her as well, tried to kill her after his death. I think he’s tasked with addressing readers’ concerns with the novel, but there’s also a lot more going on lol
Submission 1: unhinged, no idea what romance is, has a feral dog with rabies for a boyfriend and thinks that boyfriend is super cute. Also, middle aged man. I love middle aged men.
Submission 2: Because Look, he is trying to get two characters to fall in love for Important Plot reasons and a: him and his main Minion have to look up what love is like in the shitty romance novels they're characters in, and then b: decide to make the two characters fall in love through the Cunning Use of Bugs. Also he got a copy of the book he is a character in, found out his fate, and was like I Think The Fuck Not.
He also has pretty good morals, if not personality. He’s a much better guy than I expected him to be tbh
Wu Xi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Submission: He is the roundworm in my stomach
Qi Ye tells the story of Prince Jing Beiyuan’s seventh life, which is a repeat of his first life. Wu Xi is the Great Shaman’s Shamanet and the Empire’s captive from Nanjiang who did not appear in Jing Beiyuan’s first life.
From what I remember, he uses something similar to magic to make a court official become aroused / see a beautiful woman and embarrass himself in front of the entire court. As a child.
He also has a vast array of dangerous and venomous animals, one of which he gifts to Jing Beiyuan after they become friends.

this weeks meditations on sanguo: man, team wu is SO slept on it's insane. multiple generals have made themselves human pin-cushions for sun quan and it's all side-stuff for luo guanzhong. "yeah yeah the blind devotion. we've all seen it." the podcast im listening to got SO heated about sun quan irresponsibly running into battle the host chewed him out for like 10 mins. "YOU ARE A DUKE. STOP PUTTING YOUR MEN IN DANGER. WHY CAN'T YOU BE LIKE CAO CAO?"
i feel SO bad for mr lu su who is still holding onto the dream that if he asks nicely enough, liu bei will give him Jing Province back. unfortunately i throw my support behind whoever is funniest at any given time, and team almost-shu is winning.
Now i'm desperate to see an adaptation that makes team almost-shu the morally-grey scoundrels they are because this shit is SO entertaining. i love the fact their unscrupulous irl actions often clash with luo guanzhong's moralising narrative and i think it creates some incredible (accidental) characterisation.
Everyone: I CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW I'M LOSING TO A SANDALWEAVER Liu Bei: I've been eating pieces of their territory when they're not looking :3

Snippet of Detoxify, Chapter 5
I have spent today watching the Lianhualou concert and writing the next chapter of my (modern) City AU, and here's a bit of what I have written.
Li Lianhua PoV
Li Lianhua got home at half past eleven, by pedal boat. Shulin and Wu Xi had stuck him with needles for hours, talked both with him and over him, gave him herbal concoctions to drink (that was mostly Shulin; even Wu Xi looked doubtfully at some of his ingredients) and made him go through exercises that bordered on the superstitious or fantastical.
When Zhang Ping brought home little Teddy, Shulin had gone to put her to bed while Wu Xi carried on sticking him with needles and taking extensive notes. They gave him a number of instructions, some of them sensible, a few of them a tad weird, and one of them actually bizarre.
“Real life doesn’t work that way,” Li Lianhua protested to Wu Xi while Shulin was leaving a message on the boat rental’s answering machine.
“You can’t deny there’s qi involved, and you can’t deny that it’s a very ancient daoist tradition,” Wu Xi said. “I’m not telling you to do anything extraordinary; that would be counterintuitive. Just observe what happens.”
“And why do you think, anyway, that I…”
Shulin finished his phone call and laughed. “The signs are clear,” he declared. “Don’t forget that I’m with Peizhi, and he’s with Jing Beiyuan. We know our pillow princesses, and you obviously are one.”
Li Lianhua sputtered offendedly, but Wu Xi just pushed him out the door. “You can drop me at the point by the nightclub where the cabs are, and then you ride your boat home to your lovely men.”
And now here he was, approaching the berth and their bus from the water, where they wouldn’t expect him to appear.
He tied up the boat and walked up the three steps at the quay that you needed when the tide was low, and looked at his home.
Di Feisheng’s workshop was packed up again, and the Lotus Bus had settled down for the night -- the strings of lights in the roof extension were dark, and the only light inside the bus proper was the blue flicker of something playing on the big screen, and the orange glow from the basic kitchen light.
He opened the door and stepped inside. A-Fei and Xiaobao were vegging out on the couch, cuddling up to each other, each with a half-empty beer bottle at hand. When they noticed Li Lianhua entering, the boppy music from their show stopped, and they both smiled at him -- Xiaobao with an almost canine happiness, and Di Feisheng with his honest smile that not only involved teeth but brought light to his eyes.
Li Lianhua considered getting himself a drink as well, but instead sat on the couch with them, parking his skinny behind neatly between them. They both scooted over a little bit, long practice telling them exactly how much space Li Lianhua needed. It wasn’t much.
Their arms had been around each other and slid apart just a little to encompass him. Li Lianhua dropped into his rightful place with a deep, contented sigh.
“My lovely men,” he said, possessively, and as if on cue, each of them leaned in to kiss him -- first A-Fei, then Xiaobao.
It was so extremely soothing to come home to them; leaving them would be terribly hard when the time came.
“Is there any carrot cake left?” he asked.

The Wikipedia page on Taishi Ci says that when it was recommended he be given a command to oppose Sun Ce, Liu Yao said, "If I appoint Taishi Ci, Xu Zijiang will laugh at me." Know the source of this and what Xu Zijiang's issue with Taishi Ci would of been/why Liu Yao would care?
It is from Taishi Ci's biography, acting as an explainer why this future Wu figure was not shining in another state (not an unknown explainer that makes an officer and their new employee look better)
Just to note, Zijiang is the style name of Xu Shao the famed talent spotter who made that comment about Cao Cao. There isn't any known reaction of Xu Shao to Taishi Ci. What he might have potentially objected to could be a couple of things 1. Taishi Ci's career so far was being a scholar, holding a minor local position, then forced into exile after he disrupted and his bold break out for Kong Rong to act as an envoy. On what grounds would you give this young man (30 years old) a senior command position? 2. Taishi Ci made the not unreasonable gamble that someone from his home town would show him preferment. Even if he hadn't had dealing with Liu Yao before. Xu Shao might not be so impressed by blatant favouritism of someone from Liu Yao's home area. Nor incidently might be the powerful families of the south, key local allies and those holding administrative posts in the area. In terms of why Liu Yao would care: Liu Yao had only been in the area a few years and his appointment to the province was a mere one year. His control of the province was less than that after he engineered the throwing out of Yuan Shu's representatives Sun Ben and Wu Jing. Liu Yao had constructed a coalition of support against Yuan Shu, but his control of Yang had its limits.
Having Xu Shao's support was a prestigious boon, he was a man who could make and break reputations, a figure known through the land. Such endorsement was valuable to any warlord and a good signal to Yang province (and abroad) that Liu Yao was a worthy figure. Even if Liu Yao thought Xu Shao was the stupidest of stupidest people, he would have to be seen to value such a worthy gentleman. If Xu Shao complained that Liu Yao was appointing young, undeserving people based on coming from his home commandery, not a good look for Liu Yao. Or even if he just mocked the appointment in the army made by the new lord, it would cause damage to Liu Yao's reputation at a time when he needs to keep hold of support. So why not make Taishi Ci have to prove himself and show the southern lords he would pick by merit, not seek to replace them with northern men? Hope that helped
