Popular Danmei Character Tournament
CWs: MAJOR 2ha spoilers, genitalia mention, suggestive language, death mention, d*mon mention
Mo Ran from the Husky and His White Cat Shizun
Submission: dumbasses need representation too
He’s obsessed with his Shizun (Chu Wanning), but for plot reasons, he “hates” Chu Wanning. Still wants to fuck him tho (he thinks this is normal)
Constantly doing a fucking limbo contest where the bar is understanding his own feelings (he’s underground)
The author pulls him and the reader through the redemption of a century kicking and screaming.
Canonly has the largest d*ck in the cultivation realm (that we know of) - “Seen when bathing at Deyu Hall; an absolute unit, truly awe-inspiring” (Ch.131) - that leads to Chu Wanning having an entire crisis
“Because like people, an ox has gotta eat. For the sake of eating, a lot of work has to be done. If one day you can’t work anymore, then no one cares if you’re alive or dead.” - Ch.65, Ox Eats Grass
The reason behind his “hatred-yet-not-hatred” for Chu Wanning is wild - he purposefully chose to take the Flower of Everlasting Hatred to save Chu Wanning, causing him to become Taxian-jun
His story is also incredibly tragic, but we don’t talk about that
Six Balls from Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Look at the Submissions Here
A minor demon from SVSSS Shen Qingqiu meets while escaping Luo Binghe that’s become a fandom meme
Shen Qinqiu asks for a group of demons’ names, and Six Balls replies that he’s called Six Balls because when he was born, his Pa said he weighed about six balls. It is never elaborated what kind of balls was used as a measurement.
Normally, Six Balls would be in the Less Popular section, but he’s the most submitted character at 14 submissions. Six Balls lives forever; you can’t escape him.

okay so since nobody else jumped to make this, here we go
(there's a 'see results' option for those who did read svsss at the end of the poll btw!)
(also i ask humbly to reblog if this poll caught your fancy. because most of my followers are from danmei fandoms and likely have read svsss)

Fists raised, swords ready, it's time to fight-
Oh hold on. What's that delicious smell?
Can we call a meal break?
The contestants of this poll could probably open a restaurant. A couple of them have, before the plot dragged them back in. All I know is that watching them cook make me very hungry.
*a web novel with an English translation here. I recommend it wholeheartedly especially if you enjoy Guardian. (Modern with superpowers, danmei)
**the web novel that took over my life for the past few weeks. An English translation can be found here. I also recommend it wholeheartedly, excellent worldbuilding, plotting, and characters. (Xianxia, danmei)
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 1, Poll 16
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave here.
Xue Xian- Copper Coins / Tong Qian Kan Shi
Qualifications:
Protagonist of a danmei (Chinese BL) webnovel, in committed relationship with a man by the end of the story. Due to pre-canon injury, he is paraplegic for most of the story, though he slowly recovers his mobility during the course of it by returning his stolen body parts (it may make more sense in context: hes an immortal dragon).
Propaganda:
In short: paraplegic gay dragon :D Longer version: An immortal dragon paralyzed from waist down and stuck in the mortal world after someone attacked him and made off with half his body (dragon body parts all have uses in magic or medicine). Meets an amnesiac monk and they end up going on adventure together to recover lost memories (the monk) and lost body parts (the dragon). Their dynamic is significant annoyances to lovers <3 One interesting detail: though Xue Xian can change forms, his paraplegia remains in all of them, whether he is a paper doll, a human, a big noodle, a smol noodle... (yeah he has big & small dragon forms. that time he turned into a smol noodle and wrapped himself around his future bf's wrist lives in my brain rent-free tbh) Significant part of his drive to recover his stolen bones is to be able to fly again, btw, in his true (big dragon) form. ...To make sure I'm not misleading anyone: he does recover full mobility by the end of the story, BUT his disability is a very significant part of the novel.
Zuko-Avatar: The Last Airbender
Qualifications:
Zuko is sight impaired and has PTSD. Zuko is bisexual.
Propaganda:
Zuko is sight impaired and has PTSD. Zuko isn't queer in canon to my knowledge.

honestly wrt the queer poll sometimes i do feel like the reason scum villain gets the "dirty trashfire" treatment is because binghe is so agressively bisexual and that's disgusting to the ~our pure sexless yaoi hualian~ crowds who want their ships to be one The Man Gender and one The Uke Gender and for nobody to need enemas
Hmmm interesting ideas 🤔 even though biphobia is pretty bad in fandom still though I don't really think that plays a super huge role considering I don't think that many people actually know Binghe is canonically bisexual weirdly enough (obviously if you headcanon him otherwise it's fine but I do personally think it says something that Shen Qingqiu, famous for such hits as "he must be asexual since he hasn't married any women at age 20" does directly say he's bisexual).
I'm thinking the purity culture plays a big role though, even if people don't think about it that way. As in, I don't think everyone saying it's a dirty trash fire is saying it because they hate gay sex (though that is a substantial crowd of opinion) but because instead because it's a comedic commentary on sex, over sexualization in media, and objectively poor-quality literature/erotica. Because it jokes so much about objectification and fetishization through narrators who somewhat embody those traits, people that think that has no place in media in general automatically discount it as a bad representation, and because it's a comedy, people don't feel the need to look under the hood and read deeply for the actual meta commentary. I also mentioned this briefly before, but in terms of when SV gets friendly fire from other danmei fandoms, I think the comedy sometimes goes over a lot of western readers' heads even if they're somewhat familiar with how translated Chinese text reads. Like they can forgive somewhat awkward phrasing in the face of the grand, sweeping narratives of mdzs and tgcf and whatnot, but in the more character-focused sv, it becomes more difficult to parse and more likely to come off as "bad" because translated text can come off as weird sounding to native speakers just by nature! This isn't really anyone's fault, but since sv is much more clear and frank with its language and literary devices (though still pretty sophisticated imo, just not to the point of being a great epic or whatnot), this becomes more inexcusable to people.

Hey! I know it’s a bit late but I just saw your polls and your recent own opinion and thought I’d add my two cents. Scum Villain is my personal favorite and tgcf is my least favorite. Like many others, tgcf was my first danmei and first mxtx novel and svsss is my most recent.
I liked tgcf but it didn’t really feel like anything was happening, the pacing was very slow and a lot of the arcs felt really disconnected from eachother (which makes sense considering the scale and all the characters but..) a lot of the arcs that heavily featured side characters didn’t really grab my attention as well as, for example, the Yi City arc from mdzs did. I tried to latch onto the characters, I really did but they just didn’t leave much of an impact on me at all, which is strange because pretty much everyone in svsss interested me.
While svsss may not be perfect, it was just so engaging! i read the first 3 books in two weeks and I had so much fun! I felt so much! sy’s stupidity (affectionate) was just sooo infuriating in all the right ways and his relationships with the cast were super fun! There was definitely a clear progression of events and thinking and just a huge looming of stakes (even though a lot of them were just made up in sqq’s head). The character development too! Svsss was just a delight to read. So many of the side characters are just so amazing too: sqh and mbj have become some of my all time favorites and just all the extras were so good!
Anyways I just have so much love for svsss and I guess I just didn’t connect enough with tgcf. Thanks for reading :)
hi! i agree with everything you’ve said!
i read the books in the order of mdzs -> tgcf -> svsss and i didn’t expect to enjoy sv the most at all considering I had initially liked mdzs due to its horror and tragedy aspects. Tgcf had plenty of tragedy + some horror but as you said, the characters were somewhat unstimulating.
although i do feel the need to give a shoutout to QuanYin. That sidepair actually had me invested the most out of all the other side characters in hob. it’s a shame the fandom tends to sleep on them (i’m guilty i need to draw them Soon!!)
i think what i love about sv is that it’s more of a ‘show don’t tell’ book compared to tgcf. Tgcf took ages explaining things that didn’t need to be explained.
Moshang were barely even in the main story and yet the “Fuck! he can’t fly!” scene had me laughing for literally half an hour and fully believing in moshang supremacy!! mxtx did that with only a few lines during the final showdown!!! and yet we had an entire arc for beefleaf that only made me interested in the sibling dynamic between shi qingxuan and shi wudu 😩
i know sv has its faults—all the books do—but i do think it gets a more of a bad rap than it deserves.
thanks for sharing :)

Okay so if you haven’t seen, but I’m like a big fan of how so many Danmei characters have like animals that can like represent them (I just imagine them all in like some kind animal crossing world and it just makes me happy!)
So I wanted to put out a list of the ones that I’m pretty confident on, but I’d also love to hear any other opinions! I am going to put the list below the cut! I also wanted to pose two questions.
Question one: Okay so I have begun Clear and Muddy loss of water (what can I say, I’m a hopeless sapphic, it was basically a requirement at this point) and I’m not far enough in yet to come up with any animal match ups for them! I would love to hear from anyone about your opinions, what animals would you associate with Qiyan and Jingnu? I’d love to hear in the comments or feel free to message me in either tumblr messaging or from my ask box! I need to know others opinions!
Question 2: Is there other Danmei / Baihe novels that you all recommend or any poll ideas you want to see? I am all ears! Like above, reach out in the comments, messaging, or askbox! I look forward to hearing from people!
Onto my list! I am currently sticking to the official couples, though I would love peoples opinions on some of the other ships and characters!
So for Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan, I feel like there are 2 common ones. One of course is the ever popular and official on the special edition book cover bunnies, which I love! I have also seen them as a fox and dragon though, which I am not opposed to!
Hua Cheng is a fox and I have seen that Xie Lian Is a ferret/weasel, though my friend brought up that they say someone say he was really a stoat, which I personally love and agree, cute and stuff, but can also take down a bunny twice it’s size with ease, I feel like it is Xie Lian Vibes!
Shen Qingqui is a cat, and Luo Binghe is a fluffy dog, nuff said!
Mobei Jun was pretty unanimously a snow leopard, and Shang Qinghua is very much a Hamster!
Mo ran is a husky and chu wanning is a white cat ( the title totally didn’t give anything away…)
Shen Qiao is a deer is what I’ve seen most often and Yan Wushi is a wolf (GAHHH I LOVE THOSE TWO!!)
When I solidify more of the animal match ups of different characters (including the non canon ships) I will reblog the post and add them on!

Popular Danmei Character Tournament
CWs: MAJOR 2ha spoilers, d*mon mention, major character death mention
Chu Wanning from the Husky and His White Cat Shizun
You cannot read 2ha without being infested by the Chu Wanning brainrot
He loves so deeply and with all his heart but would rather die than admit it. His clumsy attempts at kindness are seen as insincere or cruel, and he will never deny it.
He climbed 3,799 stairs while dying to save Mo Ran. He made him wontons, and let Mo Ran believe Shi Mei made them. He always chooses to save others
“It hurt too much to hold one person in his heart, so he hid him carefully in the very depths of his heart. It was fine if that person didn’t like him, as long as he could think about that person quietly, protect that person silently; it was fine if he couldn’t have that person.”
“If you don’t know how to save others, how will you save yourself?”
He is THE character ever made and my personal favorite. Reading 2ha means being willing to die for this man, and I’ll stand by that for the rest of my life

Ever went through all the trouble of getting your blorbo from danmei into a tournament, only to have them eliminated in the first round because the poll didn't reach enough danmei fans? This blog aims to help with that!
I'm keeping an eye on a number of brackets myself, but if you find a poll I missed, message me with a link, or just tag me in the poll's replies, and I'll reblog it asap. Similarly, if you find a tournament that's just perfect for danmei submissions, be those characters, ships, or novels themselves - send it my way!
Then, happy voting 🫶

[Test Poll] Format #1
This is to test what format would be best for the poll posts during the tournament. The media featured are Chinese BL novels (danmei), and propagandas are from my stack of old reviews so they may be quite long. No trailers, so I’m putting images as placeholders for where the trailer should go. Just vote as if this were actually part of the tournament, then later I’ll gather some feedback. You may also leave feedback in the replies of this post.
Group A Round 1: #A1 vs #A2
#A1: Man picks up fish, keeps it as pet, but then it turns into a merman
Summary:
Follows the story of Rand Sievers, the younger brother of the CEO of Deep White, the leading company for biological advancements. Rand was once kidnapped as a child, and when his brother Vincent finally found him years later, he no longer remembered anything.
One day, Rand picked up a stranded “fish” from the beach, kept it as a pet, and gave it the name “Munster.” Little did he know that he was actually raising a biological weapon… a real monster.
Tumblr media
#A2: Mushroom turns into a man, goes after another man to retrieve his “child”
Summary:
The story follows An Zhe, a sentient mushroom, after he takes over the body of the dead human An Ze. Assuming An Ze’s identity, he enters the northern human base in search of his spore, which had been harvested by humans. All people entering this base first have to undergo a screening that determines whether or not they have been infected by the mutated creatures outside. If found infected, the person will be eliminated on the spot.
An Zhe isn’t human, but he isn’t infected either. The judge Lu Feng cannot determine his case, but he highly doubts that the man is human. Hence, even after An Zhe is granted entry, he still keeps a close eye on him.
Propagandas, visuals/trailers, and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#A1: Man picks up fish, keeps it as pet, but then it turns into a merman
Tumblr media
Trigger Warnings: Gore, cannibalism, violence, rape*, kidnapping, blood
*rape happens, but the perpetrator was drugged and did it out of his control
Propaganda:
The novel starts out slow and, dare I say, fluffy. It introduces Rand as naïve and oblivious, just happily raising his ugly little fish. Even when said fish begins exhibiting anomalous behavior, Rand has merely chalked it up to it being extremely weird.
Meanwhile, his overprotective brother, Vincent, is secretly engaging in a dubious biological project. Rand has been kept ignorant about it for his safety, but some things are just beyond their control.
When Rand picks up Munster from the beach, he inevitably gets himself signed up to the chaos surrounding Vincent. Mysteries arise and distorted truths unwind, and these are all gonna forcefully unearth the traumas of the past that Rand has forgotten. Like opening Pandora’s box, all hell breaks loose, and never before have I read a danmei novel more hell-like than Mermaid Effect.
The novel would forcibly configure stomach-churning images in my mind. With vivid descriptions of violence and claustrophobic portrayals of the characters’ struggles, one should have high tolerance for disturbing content in order to fully enjoy this amazing thriller. I didn’t think I could handle extreme gore and cannibalism before, but this novel really forced me to raise my limits
Throughout the story, it asks the question on what it is that truly makes a monster. Some characters seem friendly and kind, but inside, their hearts are full of darkness. And then there are those who you’d think were villains, but underneath all the scary exterior, were actually just misunderstood. This novel then explores the answer to the question by bringing out the worst in its characters, showing how every single one of them is a bit of a monster inside, blurring the lines between “monster” and “human.” In the end, all that remains is the essence of the person, who they truly are in spite of the skins they wear.
But at its very core, this is actually a heartwarming story. It’s a story of love and of family, and of healing and second chances.
How Rand develops from staying ignorant to being brave enough to face his past was really commendable. And this was all possible with the help of Munster, who, oddly enough, was at the very bottom of Pandora’s box. Munster gave Rand the push and support he needed to rip off his scars and fix what had been broken.
Tumblr media
#A2: Mushroom turns into a man, goes after another man to retrieve his “child”
Tumblr media
Trigger warnings: …It’s been so long since I read this, so I can’t remember
Propaganda:
It’s unlike those danmei zombie stories where the apocalypse seems like it’s all fun and games. There is no group of friends forming teams and going on missions. No treasure hunting, no power-ups, and no strengthening of the fort. In this novel, the “enemy” is not just another adventure; the enemy is a powerful and overwhelming force that can swallow one unawares, and no one can run away from it.
So many of the characters die, and most of the time, their deaths are not even meaningful. The author kills them off like they’re swatting away flies, and you can’t complain that it’s bad writing either because it’s a f**king apocalypse. People are supposed to die.
But either way, the sudden meaningless deaths still wouldn’t be bad writing. The deaths significantly contribute to the tense atmosphere of the whole story. The author setting up the great inevitability of death paints a vivid picture of what the characters are going against, which is important because the Boss enemy has no physical form. The characters can’t fight it head-on like with a zombie.
And amidst all this hopelessness, our main character An Zhe shines like sunshine in the rain. He is the one thing that saves this story from further sinking into the abyss. His character is not exactly sunny and all-smiles, but he has a certain charm that comforts the people around him, and the readers as well. He is the embodiment of hope in this novel, and I couldn’t have asked for a more fitting main character.
Overall, the story highlights the beauty of hope and human will—how humans, in the face of calamity, will struggle and resist. Some may give in, but there will always be those who will continue to fight. This is an apocalypse story that one shouldn’t miss, and I absolutely recommend it to everyone.

okay i don’t want to ramble in the op’s tags but like. that post of the poll going around asking what people hate most in fanfics/what will make you click out immediately has reminded me of something i’ve realised in the past few years which is like. i’m almost every single one of those cases, those CAN be executed well or have a narrative reason for being there. second person can be used to convey terror and incomprehension (that’s what i’m doing with my sunrise fic!). first person works well for fics written as mock scripts or audio recordings. grammar and spelling can be altered and done “wrong” to indicate a character’s state of mental disarray. paragraph breaks can be omitted to indicate stream of consciousness and urgency. “excessive” exclamation points? a stylistic preference, things like danmei fanfic that sticks close to the original formatting of the web novels can even be expected to have this. centre alignment? can be used to indicate a break in narrative style (i like to put dreams or visions in centre or right alignment). digits rather than words? can be used to convey a sense of old school or retro science fiction vibe! the only one on that list that i cannot think of a good excuse for is “vanilla take on dead dove” and that’s because it’s an entirely different category than any of the others—it’s trope misuse rather than stylistic or narrative choice. basically: even if you hate it, there exists or will exist a scenario where it’s used well, and not using it would diminish the intended experience.

Speaking of polls, it's been a while since I pitched @danmei-in-polls - which is a sideblog i run that aims to collect all polls and tournaments with danmei anything in them (characters, relationships, novels themselves or their adaptations...) If you enjoy clicking buttons and/or getting competitive about blorbos as much as I do, consider giving that a follow!
Currently it's mostly reblogs of active polls plus a list of tournaments with submissions open, but I've been considering some quality of life updates lately, with several possibilities already put to vote here - might wanna weight in on that if you do decide to join the gang.
