Club Friday Episode 1

I'm watching Club Friday The Series: Moments & Memories, so you don't have to.

It's only four episodes, all the characters are queer, and mi gente,

IT'S MESSY!

First off, it's based on a true story.

This entire disclaimer is wild because it states it doesn't want to depict anything that goes against "society's moral standards" (bleh), but also . . . bitches stay messy!

So I'm popping open a bottle of wine and diving in.

It begins with a child, and if this ain't Bank's kid, then they clownin'!

Bank's kid (I'm not playing these games! She HAS to be his kid) says she has two mommies, and it cuts to a picture of Rey and the ex-girlfriend.

But Rey was just trying to have sex with her HUSBAND, Nart, who said no, and ran to his man's room (who is Bank). A MESS!

Now we go back in time to five years ago when Rey broke up with her girlfriend, she met her future husband, and she is the CEO of a GAY ASS COMPANY!

Rey's ex-girl is straight trippin' and being PETTY! But also the conversation that The Warp Effect implanted in my brain about sperm donors having to be MARRIED to the person they are giving the donation to is front-and-center here. Deadass, Thailand? That's not sperm donation if people are forced to get married.

Rey's ex-girl called a friend to ask if she could borrow that friend's boyfriend, so she could post pictures of them together to make Rey think she already has A MAN! She is waiting for Rey to blow up her phone, but Rey broke it throwing it across her office after seeing the picture. Y'all couldn't get me in a relationship!

The queers are sharing their misery, and Bank will be playing Nart's slutty cheating ex, but now the plotline is clear. These queers are gonna have a baby together (that kid is Bank's, I'm telling y'all!).

This is the highest compliment - Bank plays a manipulative slut so well. This man is eating this!

Y'all, there is color coding in this, and I'm MAD! Everyone and everything is blue, but it's already morphing. I'm gonna like this show, aren't I? It's gonna make me like it!

This show will be someone's bisexual awakening because I, a bisexual, am very awake for ALL OF THIS!

I wanted to make a joke like, "Mom, is this you?" but my mom is Mexican, so she would never say she loves my humor. Instead she'd say, "Do you think you're funny? Got time to make jokes, but can't find time to iron your clothes. You throw them all wrinkled in the dryer two minutes before you need to be somewhere. Now that's a joke because I know I didn't raise you to do that. Desgraciada."

She loves me. She's the best mom.

So next time she asks if I think I'm funny, I'll let her know someone on Tumblr thinks I am, just so she can respond "¿Quien es Tumbles?" then I'll explain to here that TumblR is a thing not a person, and she'll tell me, "The only THING you'll tumb-LER over are those clothes that you refuse to hang in your closet, which is why they get wrinkled. this year, for the first time ever, I really went in HARD on, like, super long multichapter fics but the longest one **I think** was On the Night's Watch by Miss M

I have reread it more than once and like, I would give my life for a 12-episode mini series of this fic

after 26 chapters and 105,820 words, she sticks the landing with a beautiful, poignant, satisfying ending (which is not easy to do) and the very last scene gets me EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

What do you think Arnold and Helga's future looks like? Do you think they are destined to get married and be together forever? I know some people have mentioned Craig saying that, but I'm not sure. It's sweet how it seems foreshadowed with Arnold's grandparents, and with Jack and Tish as well (when Arnold and Helga are the best man/Maid of Honor). When do you think Arnold started looking at her differently? I think it was before TJM, but I think he realized he loved her in TJM.

Craig Bartlett did say in an interview that Helga and Arnold are meant for each other, and will get married and have kids (and also that the episode “Married” is foreshadowing of this). It’s in this interview at 9:10. In the same interview, it’s mentioned at 7:44 that after her confession in Hey Arnold The Movie, he was supposed to know how Helga feels and confess to her “under duress” in the original script of The Jungle Movie. Take note that this interview took place in 2012, back when getting The Jungle Movie was a pipe dream, and everyone thought that this interview was as good as we’d ever get. But while some aspects of the script changed from conception all those years ago to the real deal, many ideas, like Arnold confessing, are the same. If you’re interested, here is the first part of the interview I just linked. It’s old, but it’s still cool to listen to, I think. But back to the question!

In The Jungle Movie Arnold says this during his confession: “Helga, I’ve known you my whole life practically. And, you’ve always been angry a-and kinda, you know, mean. But…I’ve also seen you be really loyal and super brave. So I always wondered if maybe you were mean to me because, well, you loved me. Listen, I know you tried to tell me before, and I wasn’t ready to hear it. But now, this whole thing–the trip to San Lorenzo, getting away from Lasombra, finding my parents–it’s all ‘cause of you. Your locket–it woke up my parents! You did it all, just to help me.”

In his confession, he says that he “always wondered” if Helga actually loved him. And indeed, it seems that even before her confession in Hey Arnold The Movie, Arnold has some idea that Helga loved him, even if it was something he didn’t want to consciously acknowledge. At the end of “Married,” Arnold dreams a surprisingly realistic love confession from Helga, so while he doesn’t fully realize it’s the truth, it’s at least somewhere in his mind already.

After Helga’s confession, I think that Arnold knew Helga meant every word she said. He says “You didn’t really mean all that, did you? You don’t really love me, right? (”Right”) You just got caught up in the heat of the moment, right? (”Right!”) You actually hate me, don’t you?”

The way that he deliberately leans toward her in this scene makes it clear to me that he was giving her an out. He knew Helga didn’t really want to own up to what she said in the heat of the moment quite yet, but what was said was said, and Arnold isn’t stupid. He knows a confession like that doesn’t come from nowhere. I think that this kinda smug smirk he has as she walks away at the end of the scene says it all:

So he knows that she loves him after this point. He already thought somewhere in his mind that she liked him, but now he knows that it’s true. This is reinforced by the way that Arnold acts in April Fool’s Day (which, if I remember correctly, was supposed to take place after the first movie in the timeline).

As soon as he realizes that she was pranking him with her blindness, the way he gets back at her with the tango is so teasing and smug that he HAS to know she loves him at that point.

As for Arnold’s feelings for her? Well, I’m not sure he thought about it until Helga’s confession. Sure, he thought of her as a friend. Despite her angry outbursts, he could see that she was a good person somewhere in there. Arnold’s a really emotionally intelligent person, after all. After her confession I think things started to change, though. Things were supposed to return to the status quo, but I don’t think they fully could at that point, as the April Fool’s Day episode proved.

However, like Arnold says in his confession in The Jungle Movie, he wasn’t ready to hear Helga’s confession at the time. Helga’s feelings for him are so deep and intricate! She’s been harboring this love for almost her entire life! I think that Arnold needed time to process the intense feelings Helga has for him, and figure out how he felt in return. It’s the only fair thing to do.

So that’s where The Jungle Movie picks up. Arnold knows Helga loves him, and his feelings for her have grown in response over the course of the year, but they haven’t been acknowledged. And part of that unacknowledgement was their sort of silent agreement not to break the status quo, as well as Arnold’s parental issues. I don’t think Arnold would have been emotionally ready to go anywhere with Helga if he didn’t find some closure for the mystery of his parent’s disappearance one way or the other. This is clear to me from this scene:

This is why I don’t think Arnold’s confession could have come any earlier. It wasn’t just because the whole San Lorenzo trip was basically a testament to how far Helga was willing to go to help him, although that undoubtedly helped. It was because the emotional baggage of his lost parents was finally gone. I think that Arnold probably knew he had some feelings for Helga before The Jungle Movie happened, but his parents took precedent.

Also, I believe that during the course of the movie Arnold realized that his feelings for Helga were deeper than he ever knew. Helga did everything for him! She was brave, and selfless, and strong, and loyal. All of these are things that Helga has been all along, but now they’re able to shine through properly, and Arnold sees her more and more for who she truly is.

I also am of the mind that Arnold probably wouldn’t confess his feelings for her unless he believed he truly loved her too. After all, Arnold knows how deep her feelings for him run, he knows the lengths she’s willing to go to help him. Would it be fair to Helga for him to tell her he liked her too, if he didn’t have any of the same passion or intensity behind it? So, over the course of the movie I believe that Arnold did realize he loved her too, and after getting his parents back it was finally the right time to let her know. Their feelings for each other were finally fully on the same page.

So what does their future look like? Well, at the end of “Married” there’s a scene that Craig Bartlett hinted in an interview may be what truly lies ahead for them in the distant future.

Craig Bartlett says “Yeah, Married was one of those shows where it’s like well, see, this is how we feel about them. And, and, uh, y’know it’s kind of–they’re forever. And it’s like clownin’ around and not getting it right, and they’re always–y’know, Helga can’t help herself, she’s always saying the wrong thing and getting in trouble.” (9:29)

So, they’ll have their rough patches and shenanigans, but they’ll figure it out and be stronger for it. Any relationship between them comes from a place of deep admiration first and foremost. All of this is straight from the creator’s mouth, and according to him they’re destined to be together.
