as someone who doesnt actually read comic books but adores this blog and bad-comic-art, the male shadow crotch phenomenon really fascinates me. these characters are drawn with the most skintight costumes imaginable to highlight all of their muscles and abs and Masculinity™️in a way thats basically sexual already but theyre scared of a little bit of dick lmfao.
drawing dick is for the gays and Brother I'm

how do you edit comics so good? how did you practice/any tips or advice? i want to edit comic art but i have no clue how to start
I'm between calls so this going to be rushed Whoops.
- start on pieces that have a similar style to your own. this just makes getting your brush settings right easier.
- fuck with your brush settings. Jpeg artifacting and the way older comics were scanned and printed adds a lot of Texture Jank that you need to match to make the edit seamless.
- touch as little of the piece as physically possible. Your hands and the ogs have different muscle memory and will make different decisions on how a line should lay. so, make as few changes as you can and feather the edited areas out (this also helps with hiding the texture jank not lining up perfectly)
and this one's important:
- Focus On Pieces That Fuck Up The Way You Tend To. Yes pointing and laughing is fun, being a pedant is one of life's joys. But critique of other art is fundamentally about self improvement. You don't critique a finished piece to improve It you critique to teach your brain how to not make those same mistakes and to see them in your own work. if other people benefit from seeing your process then that's just a bonus.
I started almost exclusively working on pretty ladies bc I'm a gay man and like drawing big hairy men and so had an Extreme Lack of ability when it came to drawing women pretty. (I can draw women pretty now)
- Once you're comfortable move on to other styles, trace the images, make your brushes match the lines in front of you line for line, use fewer layers. and just Learn how to match another person's hand. This plasticity is extremely useful bc it can make you more comfortable exploring new styles and the transitions between them in your own work fun and seamless.

anyways a conclusive guide to how I interact with bad-comic-arts posts.
Stage 1. edit added in a reblog of the original post and tagged them as per their submission guidelines for edits. "I put effort into this and it's at least 80% a serious attempt at critique"
stage 2. edit added in a reblog without tagging them, "This is more for the joke than any like. potential learning for myself or others, but it's not atrocious or distasteful"
stage 3. edit posted in its own post but crediting them as the source bc Proper Credit Is Important. "I'm sorry for this but I had to do it for the bit 😔"
stage 4. edit posted without it being a submission or having a source credited "I forgor where I found this. 50/50 it came from bca or the recommendations on my boyfriend's Pinterest boards"

So some good news.
The WFP is actually reaching Ghazzawis for food distribution and has even helped Ghazzan bakeries in Deir Al Balah and Rafah reopen by providing flour, yeast, water, etc... according to Palestinian journalist Hind Khoudary (this was on her story the other day so I can't link it).
The PCRF is also active in Ghazzah, providing medicine and even food to Ghazzawis in shelters.
Today, I ask each one of you to donate at least one dollar to both of these organisations, and more if you can spare it.

So part of the issue with researching this style is basically every source will tell you how to Not do it. Because 'Symbol Based Drawing' is actually the default way humans draw, you can especially see this in new artists and how very small children depict the world around them. example: Everyone draws eyes like this until they learn how Not to. It's the most direct translation of how our brains process the shape of an eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your brain assigns a Thing a Shape and tells your hand to make that shape. Doing it on purpose is just refining that natural like, instinct, and teaching your brain to use new and more aesthetic shapes.
(and also learning to curb the way brains scale certain parts of the body based on how important they are to like how we perceive each other. Hands and eyes getting massive noses and ears disappearing. limbs getting really long and everything else getting made skinny with the 'sexy' bits getting more emphasis is a big part of this. That's why it's so common. it's just how humans do. and symbol based styles just Harness that. and also make it Really obvious if your entire perception of women is just "sex object")
The easiest example I can give you is actually those "how to draw anime" books thatre in every craft store, I think Mark Criley (sp?) is the guy who makes them. He doesn't teach you how to draw the Thing, he teaches you the easiest shapes to Convey the thing and how big to make them in proportion to each other. and that's what symbol based drawing is All about.
I tend to think of it as a variation on cartooning so when I started developing my own symbol style I mostly referenced stylized comics I enjoy, like Dykes To Watch Out For, Scrupulosity Comics, The Property of Hate, I'm The Grim Reaper, and the TAZ graphic novels.
anyways I rambled bc this is a topic I find fascinating but tldr: Yaoi hands are human nature but still fugly.

My anatomy is still wonky, as is perspective, but I still feel like this quick sketch is an improvement.

sorry for this but tungle is being tungle and not letting me reply to this post rip, here's what I tried to say:
@minimattsmith Im Not the one who did this but I can tell you a little about it.
There's different names for this technique but I've mostly heard it called "direct symbol drawing". You train yourself to draw very quickly by having one way to draw everything from pure muscle memory. Most cartoons, comic books, and manga art uses this technique bc it's extremely Fast compared to the more volumetric style the submitter used. there's nothing wrong with that and it's actually an insanely difficult skill to learn and perfect. It takes Work and I admire folk who manage it well.
What makes this example shit is that the og artist chose to design their symbol library in such a way that all the women in their work end up looking like scary blowup dolls instead of like you know characters in a story with individual personalities and opinions on their situations.
