Gunna take a break from Arcane for a moment to talk about Our Flag Means Death, because I am extremely disappointed and I have to put these thoughts somewhere. Putting it under a cut, because I myself forgot to filter the OFMD tag while I was working and got it spoiled for me. So ye be warned, OFMD SPOILERS AHEAD.

That ending was genuinely one of the worst I’ve seen in a long time. The only other time I can recall being this sickened and angry about a show’s ending was Game of Thrones. And it’s not because I’m sad or mad or confused by Izzy’s death, yes that’s partly it, but because a character who was experiencing massive change and character growth was ONCE AGAIN rewarded with death. I am so goddamn sick of rooting for people to do better, to be better, and then FINALLY get that catharsis only to have it thrown away for shock value.

What did this add to the story? Narratively, I mean. If this is indeed the end of OFMD, and it doesn’t get renewed, what the absolute FUCK kind of message does that send? Izzy was postured as some kind of obstacle between Ed and Stede in Season 1, but in S2, he was allowed to grow outside of that weird and fucked up love triangle (term used incredibly loosely, because his love was pretty much one-sided, and most of the time it was selfish and toxic). In S2, he went on an incredible journey of coming to terms with the fact that Ed would never be his again, not in the way he wanted. Even if it was never romantic or sexual (I do not see it), he wanted Ed to himself, and he had to accept that it would never happen. And he fucking DID, that’s the pisser. He learned to see the value in Ed’s transformation, the good that Stede was for him. And he learned to appreciate it and even start playing with it and teasing the two of them. And the worst/best part was that he embraced the crew, put them into that hole in his heart that Ed left. His speech to the Prince about them being family, and that you give up your wants and dreams for them, because being a pirate is bigger than any one person alone. GOD, his fucking character growth was incredible and heart-wrenching all at once.

And then to just throw all of that away, for what? To remove him as an obstacle between Ed and Stede? He already did that himself. To make the title of the show mean something (that the flag truly means Death?). That is just so fucking cheap and backhanded. Oh, Our Flag Means Death, but no one has died yet, better kill somebody; quick shoot Izzy Hands. How about you just make the word ‘death’ a symbol for change? The death of who you once were, the death of old biases, the death of toxicity and selfishness.

Because what would have been the problem with making Izzy the new captain of the Revenge, and letting Ed and Stede go off and do their thing? In the grand scheme of the narrative, why did two characters’ happy ending have to come at the cost of another’s?! It cheapens that happy ending, puts an asterisk on it. Especially when Izzy had JUST come to the realization that that crew, those people (no matter how ridiculous and soft they were) were his motherfucking family and he would do anything to protect them. He should have gotten to, and I just… I cannot forgive that. I’m not saying you can’t kill off characters, we shouldn’t expect anyone to have plot armor. But for god’s sake, at least make it make sense, give it a reason beyond shock value.

If OFMD gets a third season, I may or may not watch. It’s more than likely I won’t. And not because I don’t love the Stede/Ed story, or any of the other beautiful ones on that ship, I do. But because I’ve lost faith in the story.

Post war jegulus doesn’t mean Regulus-the other woman Lily-the jegulus hater and James-the asshole. It also doesn’t mean jegulus using Lily as a surrogate.

Jily was a “war” relationship. Those kind of relationships tend to be impulsive and intuitive. Sometimes people in those relationships can be very close friends or platonic soulmates, but it doesn’t always mean romantic relationships. Some people are just searching for a friend or a parental figure to not feel alone and feel loved, but they can’t really place those feelings so they think it’s romantic affection.

It also gives remadora more sense in my opinion, as they would have been very problematic as a non “war” relationship. Their big age gap and the whole “dead uncles bf/bsf” would be a big no-no in every other situation(like in the “everyone alive” scenario or just “no war”).

And of course Jily can be a romantic relationship as they were in cannon, but if you want to write a jegulus post war fic you don’t need to: kill lily; make Jily have a nasty break up; make reg the other woman and James the cheater; and you most certainly should not make Lily just a surrogate as James and Regulus would never ever do shit like that!

In return you can: have post war Jily slowly realize they aren’t in love (anymore) and get divorced; Jily realize they are both gay and like other people; them never being married, Lily getting pregnant and them co-parenting Harry after the war; both of them being in other (gay) relationships,wanting a child and deciding(with their partners) to have a baby together and co-parent(now harry has four partners).

There are countless options, but don’t use the horrible ones!!!!

It also works with the sick idea of wolfstar using Tonks as a surrogate. Like if they would want a child they wouldn’t have a surrogate. Especially they won’t ask Sirius’s niece to have the baby for them!! If anything they would adopt!

I love the idea of them adopting a lil kid with lycanthropy, and it makes so much sense, considering that Sirius wouldn’t want to continue the Black family tree as a fuck you to his parents and we all saw how freaked out Remus was about passing on his illness to Teddy, so it’s very unlikely for them to have bio children.

Game Tail’s Infantilization

P.T 1:What is Infantilization

Infantilization is the process of treating a person who is not a child as a child which can lead to a sense of dehumanization.

This is what Infantilization means in the common definition. However in the sense of fandom it has a far different meaning.

In the sense of a fandom,Infantilization means when you treat a capable character who can take of themselves as though they are a child in the sense that they are extremely innocent,incapable of taking care of themselves,and are needing to be supervised.

This has been done many times in many fandoms with characters such as Papyrus from undertake,Ruby Rose from Rwby,and the one I’ll be talking about today Tails from The Sonic the Hedgehog series.

P.T 2:The Fandom

Well Heres the part where I get crucified. So yeah it’s no secret the Sonic isn’t the greatest fandom on the planet.Hell probably one of the worst.

This is not to say that every person in the fandom is terrible because that isn’t true. There are some really great & talented people in the sonic fandom.

But we do have some really big problems but we are only going to focus on the one in this post that being the infantilization the fandom makes Tails go through.

One example of this that I can find being the Sonic & Tails brother bonding done on almost every Wednesday. This is not to say I hate the Sonic & Tails Bonding cause I don’t I love it. What I don’t love is when the content between them is all most always being Tails needing Sonic’s help and be incapable.

Which sadly is almost all the content between these two and of course I like the idea that Sonic will always help Tails but I don’t like it when it comes at the cost of Tails being in able of fighting for himself.

For gods sake Sonic,and Tails are a duo of equals and brothers not Sonic,and his lamb that needs constant protection.

Another example is that whenever Tails is paired up with another character that isn’t Sonic,he is almost always the one that is following. It’s never the opposite way around.

I think this is more of an effect of Tail’s age and people thinking since he’s younger he needs more guidance. But like even that argument falls to pieces when you actually look at Tails history and realize even before he met Sonic he was fighting off birds attacking his home and an evil witch and her cronies.

Likes he been in this hero fighting game longer than the most of the others characters had been a thought in Sega’s head.

Like for gods sake he’s been around for longer than 30 years and he still hasn’t been a player character in the modern era since Sonic the Hedgehog 2006.

(Edit:Yes I know Frontiers is making him a player character but that has been the first time in the modern era since the game I mentioned)

A final example is how Tails is represented in most Fandom made material. What I mean is that whether it be fan game,fan comic,or mostly anything fan related he is an more often than not a after thought.

Like in the 3-D fan-games when they say you can play as “Tails” they actually mean that you can play as the Tornado in a usually crappy flying section.

In fan animations he usually downgraded into getting the crap beaten out of him just so that the new villain can seem like the baddest dude around even Amy would usually be that character.

But I can’t entirely blame the fandom for this cause the only reason Tails has gotten such a bad rep over the years is because the company that made him. Yeah it’s time that we talk about the terrible treatment Tails gets from Sega.

P.T 3:Sega

Dear god does Sega treat Tails like absolute dogshit compared to other characters. Like if there disrespect being done to a character more often than not it’s Tails whose being disrespected.

First example is that they are dead-set on the idea of Tails being fucking incapable without his tech even though in Sonic 3 & Knuckles Tails completed the adventure without using a single piece of tech. Hell in Sonic Prime the only reason Nine is as much of a threat is because he has his extra metal Tails.

But like yes Tails likes using tech and some degree he should but he doesn’t need it to fight. I mean for god’s sake he took down Eggman’s mech in Sonic Adventure 1 without any tech and with just his Tails.

Like you really think the guy that is one of Knuckle’s closets friends wouldn’t have at least been taught how to throw a proper punch.

(Sidenote:Bring back Super Knuckles & Super Tails. We haven’t seen them since Sonic 3 & Knuckles)

Another example is that Sega wants so badly for Tails to be the weakest member of the group when in actuality it would probably be Amy considering she needs to be saved in almost all her appearances.

Like most of Amy’s game accomplishments are because she had help and even rescuing Sonic from was only because Tails cleared the path and was actually going to do it himself.

Then there the fact that Tails canonically is one of the only characters that is capable of being able to keep up with Sonic without any assistance from any type of technology. Like since his first appearance he’s been keeping pace with the blue blur for 30 years.

Which leads me into another example that being Tails being forced to be around Sonic constantly and almost never interacting with other characters.

Over the years Tails has been forced to be with Sonic constantly so that all the other relationships with others characters have fallen to the wayside to be forgotten and never used again.

Give me more of Tails & Wave’s rivalry.

Give me more of Tails & Knuckles friendship.

Give me Tails & Marine finally reuniting like they promised at the end of Sonic Rush Adventure.

Give me Tails & Omega having a weird friendship.

Like you see how many interactions we could’ve had if Tails wasn’t chained down to Sonic and never be allowed to leave.

But thank god they are finally letting him move on and maybe become his own character again and get his own adventures.

But that’s all so I’ll see you another time and maybe ask me other things you want me to talk about and maybe I’ll answer and do them.

Hello! I love your stories on Ao3 especially with Mona Lisa & Raphael! They’re just so good!!!! 🤩🤩🤩 Anyway, I just looked up the meaning to ‘Mary Sue’ and I’m just wondering why April from 2012 was continually called that, and is that why she and Donnie didn’t go well as a ship in the show fandom? No shade to 2012 April but still I wanna know, please and thank you. 😊

First off, thank you! <3

Secondly, I will admit I originally was one of those people who thought 2012 April was a Mary Sue (don’t believe that anymore) and usually people’s criticism of her are just full on mindless hate and not any good logical reasons. But if you don’t like 2012 April that’s valid! I’ll respect you’re opinion, just please don’t say she’s a Mary Sue when in truth, she’s not.

To keep it short, from personal experience and from what I’ve seen, 2012 April haters often felt April had it too easy, like how she became a kunoichi with ease (she didn’t she worked hard for it like everyone else) and her psychic powers and being half Kraang making her overpowered (I still kinda agree on that) or how she’s the main key the Kraang need to complete their evil plans. The hater felt as if she had it way too easy (not true), with two guys being in love with her and being “manipulative” towards the both of them (though Casey and Donnie are no saints either in that love triangle) and haters believing she can do no wrong and never faced any consequences for her actions (again not true) and acting like a spoiled brat.

Again, these are NOT my personal opinions of her now, I’m just saying what I’ve seen the haters say about her.

And I think the reason why Donnie x April didn’t get received well by fans is because fans usually dislike the idea of April being in a romantic relationship with any of the turtles. That and how the writers handled Donnie and April’s relationship to some felt uncomfortable and sloppy at times. How Donnie’s feelings towards her came off as obsessive and stalkerish while April’s feelings were often unclear and we were never truly given her thoughts and feelings on the situation, just hints, never anything direct from her. That’s not even to mention that their romance plot kinda gets forgotten about by the beginning of season 3 and nothing ever really comes of it after that. We just see them hang out together and occasionally have a cute moment and that’s it. There was never a big pay off so it felt pointless to even have this ship exist in the first place when nothing really came of it. The sad thing is, this ship could’ve worked, it’s just the writers didn’t know how to handle it.

Idk if I was blinded a little bit by mads mikkelsen or this is just an unpopular opinion. Hear me out: Tonny in pusher 2 isn’t a complete pile of garbage 🤷🏻‍♂️. Like I get that he spent most of the movie doing progressively bad shit but I don’t think some people are actually taking into account the gravity of his situation or how the circumstances of his environment has affected his life. Like im of the full understanding that most people have full control over their actions and should be held accountable. Like I said, Tonny made bad choices and did bad things. But there’s such an important topic in this film that I don’t see a ton of people talk about. He mentions to the mother of his child in one scene that the events of the first movie with frank left him with a traumatic brain injury and that it affects his memory. But (through mads’s acting choices) we see time and time again as he tries to prove himself to others, he has a difficult time thinking critically about his actions before he does them. This shows itself every time he tries to prove himself to his father. It shows everytime “the cunt” takes advantage of him and manipulates him into helping him. And even towards the end when he takes his son and runs. It even shows in tiny moments, like when he’s having a convo with the mother of his child and she tries to hand him off the baby to smoke a cigarette. He looks at her confused and she says “ take his legs”. For the most part, people know not to grab a baby by the legs. But he does it because he’s so focused on his own awkward nature that his brain tells him to grab the babies legs almost on autopilot. It’s only after she calls him stupid (as almost everyone else in the film has repeatedly called him as well) that he realizes he wasn’t actually suppose to grab the babies legs. There’s more instances where it’s made apparent that the general physical brain trauma and the trauma that has been built up by his father (which we can assume has been a long time thing) has caused issues for him in the long run. You could argue that his father was done with his sons antics,but based on the fact that his father owns what is basically a car theft business and also later asks that tonny be the one to kill his ex wife, it’s made evident that his father isn’t necessarily a good person either. Not to mention the fact that his father had no intention to feel even the slightest bit of compassion after tonny finds out about his own mother and repeatedly expresses how she was crazy and in turn, lumping her in as another reason for him to hate his own son. I see all the time people say “well I was raised in a similar fashion and I know better than to fuck up like that and do bad stuff like that”. And that’s fine. But your story and how you handle it doesn’t dictate how others do. Everyone is dealt a certain hand and has to use whatever skills are given to them to decide how they go about it. If your decision making skills are off and you have no support system, and you think everyone is a against you, how can you possibly heal or make things better for yourself. You can argue “but it’s fiction, it’s not a realistic scenario” and you’d be wrong. I know personally a couple of people in similar boats. Sometimes, the system isn’t set up for people. And sometimes they struggle their whole lives to figure it out. And sometimes they don’t. Most of all it’s genuinely depressing and sad. But that doesn’t mean that tonny didn’t have the ability to be a good person. Or that he was inherently a bad person. He was just a human in a state of making bad decisions and doing bad things. I think you see that in the way he treats the baby despite the hand the of his raising. He could easily decide to be a bad father, to neglect the baby at times. But really it’s the only time we see him genuinely gentle and at ease. He knows how it feels to be small and to have bigger beings in your face. They decide if you’re worthy of their time and affection. So he tries to make it a point to take on being a dad even if he’s not sure how.

#basically what im saying is: is sometimes people do bad things because their working with the only skills that know and have #that shouldn’t directly dictate the worth of someone #there are so many people out there with so much potential #but live in environments and systems that don’t cater to them #and therefore #are marked off as lost causes because they haven’t had the chance or knowledge to succeed #any way that was a long rant #i cried through that movie #i thougt it was just gonna be s suspense thing #dont come for my neck #it’s just my opinion #and perspective #pusher #pusher 2 #mads mikkleson
