ok ok ok I have to rant specifically about how PERFECTLY they adapted and changed Joel for the tv show

because in my opinion, his characterisation has changed the most and it’s absolutely geared towards character development we don’t see in the game

in the first game, after the prologue and beyond, Joel does not change. the text and subtext makes it explicitly clear through his involvement with hunters, to the breakdown of his relationship with Tommy, that he has always been violent and cruel when it comes to his own survival. his humanity died with Sarah; it does not return with Ellie. to save himself the pain/grief of losing Ellie, he (potentially; arguably maybe not) dooms humanity.

Ellie changes. Ellie grows up; the first game is her bildungsroman.

but in the game, we’re POV Joel. we don’t want him to change; we dig in the trenches with him and by the end of the game, we’re gonna save his kid no matter what it means- fuck the fireflies.

this is a fantastic choice for the game, but it would not work for a tv show.

we don’t want to watch an already-formed character lead in tv shows. we want to watch them change.

Joel in the tv show, Joel right now, is not completely hardened. he’s not a murder machine who would torture Robert over guns and watch Tess blow his brains out and say nothing about it. hell, Tess of the tv show doesn’t seem like she would do that, either. neither of them are framed as the untouchable trafficker badasses they are in the game.

Joel in the tv show wants to get to his brother. Joel has PTSD. Joel is, despite the alluded-to argument, still motivated by interpersonal connection, and love.

anyone who has played the game knows what happens next- knows the amount of people Joel loses over the course of crossing the country. and instead of being an already-hardened, stoic, untouchable badass who just takes the losses on the chin, over and over again, Joel is going to hurt. Joel is going to feel every single one.

and then he’s going to deliver Ellie to the fireflies. they’re going to succeed. and they’re going to try and take her away from him.

and that is going to be the moment he becomes Joel from the game.

huge fan of the idea that flint cant handle what he dishes out.

they are too shy to be confrontational so as a result they let ppl walk all over them which i imagine results in pent up anger that they release thru talking shit behind ppls back .

and i get this impression from this exchange right here:

flint talking poorly of the satellites, followed by "oh no i shouldnt have said that" implies he KNOWS he shouldnt be saying it and will get confronted for it, further implying hes done it before. cosmo's rant also implies this is a common occurrence that, tbh, he is rightfully angry for. and most of the things he points out abt flint in said rant arent wrong at all.

flint can talk big all they want, but never to someone's face bc they cant handle the confrontation that comes with it. it's cowardly, there's no self-respect to be had there. its just flints attempt to feel confident/better abt themselves. and i really hope to see more of this aspect of his character, ESPECIALLY in canon since, apparently, this 1.3 blogpost isnt explicitly canon (which saddens me every time i think about it.)

btw i feel the need to add on that i dont think flint's wrong or lying abt the satellites. What I'm condemning them for is the fact they're talking shit but then cant handle the consequences. If ur gonna talk behind peoples backs and stir the pot, you should be able to say the same shit to their face as well. Cosmo certainly doesnt appreciate how flint views his boys, but i feel like even HE would have a little more respect if flint just had enough courage to say it to his face.

But they dont, because they look up to Cosmo and dont want to be on his bad side, making it even more difficult for Flint to be confrontational . he has no desire to start problems with cosmo HIMSELF, just the satellites. (ppl forget this and treat it like flint has issues with cosmo, but thats not true . flint admires cosmo, likely due to his confidence and leadership skills since its smth flint craves having for himself, and erasing that aspect is a HUGE injustice to a really fun and interesting dynamic !)

i feel like the detail that flint likes drama ALSO plays a part in all this. enjoys drama, probably watches it from afar, but the moment it involves him, hes a total coward lmao

ok yknow what else. I am so glad they're acknowledging the 180. I haven't really voiced this cuz I was otherwise so excited for this season but I really was on the verge of indignation about them just deciding to make gabriel a goofy sidekick after he was literally the biggest villain of season 1. it really felt like they weren't willing to acknowledge just how much pain he's actually caused aziraphale and crowley and, to be honest, it seemed a little out of the blue that aziraphale would try to help him. but no. they're actually talking about it. it's a central point of conflict for them that crowley rightfully wants nothing to do with this because it's GABRIEL, he tried to kill aziraphale, he's still understandably terrified that heaven will try to hurt him again, and now he wants this guy nowhere near either of them, and cannot understand why aziraphale would have him in his bookship after what he's done. and as for why aziraphale wants to help him, that seems like it's actually going to be explored rather than just accepted for the sake of the plot moving forward. not only have they not forgotten just what gabriel did or tried to do last season, they're placing that lasting fear and apprehension towards him front and centre and are going to have aziraphale and crowley conflict over whether or not he deserves their help. I'm honestly so relieved because I had always been staunchly anti-gabriel and never really enjoyed the fandom's overly jovial attitude towards him, and was genuinely really skeptical when it seemed they were going to make him a sympathetic character in the new season, especially since the trailer played the comedic angle for all it was worth. but it's not just absurdity for absurdity's sake. it's actually something for our main couple to work through. the writing knows this is a difficult shift in dynamic to contend with. and they're directly employing it as an obstacle for aziraphale and crowley. it's really good and it's put a lot of my worries about the overall tone and messaging of this season to rest

#not even getting into how this is literally the same conflict from season 1 but with a slightly different power dynamic #like aziraphale and crowley have the power to say no now. they can move on with their lives and not feel obligated to involve themselves #in heaven and hells business. and no doubt crowley wants to stay as far out of it as possible #hes content to just be a human now basically. and hes frustrated that at the first opportunity aziraphale is diving back into it #and once again crowley is forced to close ranks and focus on only protecting aziraphale. only now its more frustrating because #aziraphale can say no! crowley tried to get them out of there before but of course aziraphale couldnt. and crowley understood that #to some extent anyways #and now theyre finally free to do as they wish like he wanted and aziraphale still cant fully break away #he just wants them both to be safe but aziraphale makes that very difficult. he loves him of course but its so frustrating for crowley #like WHY cant he just enjoy their freedom. why cant he seize it with both hands. thats all hes every wanted for them #its the same conflict as in 1x04 but worse now. because aziraphale can say no and he can choose crowley over heaven. so why isnt he #ohhhhh the interpersonal conflict. its so juicy. its gonna be so good i can just feel it in my bones in my SOUL #good omens #good omens spoilers #ineffable husbands #meta tag

I didn't get a chance to vote on the poll, but also noticed what would have been my answer wasn't there so I'm writing it in now- I personally see it as he's their CREATOR first, manager second. They don't call him manager in a lot of materials, and they also don't call him father, they call him "Captain" or "sir," (this being pulled from largely the additional voice actor's portrayals at least, which I think are worth at least considering in a wider scope of interpretation)

That feels like the title or nickname he'd prefer they use, hence programming them TO use it for him- and that betrays neither fatherly intent nor producer intent, but pre-existing intent he didn't change (lifting from prior coding) or that he preferred. Beyond that he definitely refers to them as troops- it is their aesthetic, but it's more impersonal

the items you get for the lore on 1010 are toys, and while it's not stated, I've always thought there was an implication that he had made them- His relationship then isn't one of a father to sons, but of a creator about his creations, which IS different. It's why he's as willing to literally throw them at you in combat and, simultaneously, seemingly instinctively, puts a hand out in front of himself to protect them when the final attack is coming- even if they are tools to some degree, he MADE them what they are and he's PROUD of that- He doesn't want to see his work destroyed

Obviously this gets increasingly more complicated if you believe that 1010 gain sapience of some degree, but I still think the relationship isn't quite what I'd call fatherhood. He is simultaneously all the family they have and deeply, inherently unlike them- yet there is undeniably pieces of him and influences from him present in them, because every creation will reflect its creator in some way, in ways they can't even predict

Then, y'know, yeah, it's being a manager time. Ultimately he's gotta organize them and tell them what to do- how he feels about that could be a variety of ways, but he is doing it nonetheless, so something about it matters to him as well- likely the vow to serve the city thing, if leading a boyband is the way to ensure the lights stay on, then he's going to do it 'till his heart gives out.

To start, I do think you're getting a little caught up in the semantics of the poll, but since you're making the case that "creator" is different from "father," I'll hear you out.

And tbh, I really like that interpretation. It's a little more nuanced from what I'm used to seeing, and it is giving me something to sink my teeth into.

I do differ in that I don't think Neon J. personally made the toys or the base 1010: I felt like the implication of the MKI - MKIII standee was that 1010 has actually been around since the wartime era, since MKI 1010 are build more similarly to the recycled battlebots in the Metro Division. Parallel to that, I think it's implied that Neon J. is a cyborg due to suffering injuries in the war. Since they appeared to exist at the same time, it seemed more likely to me that 1010 and NJ's body originated from the same source, but not that NJ was necessarily the direct creator of either them or the toys. (Though, I will admit that knowing that the toy company is called "J-1" does imply that he has something to do with it. But to rectify that, I'm gonna say that he just bought out the company/factory, but he didn't start them.)

But that's just an argument of history. Both interpretations can still lead to the "creator" theory in the sense that NJ still views 1010 impersonally, but still fondly. Even if he didn't make the base, he still turned them into what they are today, which is still a lot of hard work and dedication to the craft.

It's not making him out to be this overly sentimental guy (which is ultimately what I dislike about most "father first" interpretations), but he's also not heartless, and I like that. It's retaining what many interpretations (including mine, sadly) sometimes miss out on, and that's that he's an artist, just like all the other stars. He values his craft, and 1010 are the result of that, for better or worse.

It would be sooo interesting...to me if the bucks won the tag belts again. Just imagine the bucks bring back the tag belts for the rest of the elite to see. To win the belts off of the team, Kenny and Hangman lost the belts to and how their tag team fell apart right after that match. I want it to bring back old feelings and memories(good and bad...mostly bad lol). I want hangmega to be sooo weird and jealous about the bucks having the belts, hahaha.
