Honestly, a Buddie feelings revelation variation on “why are you telling me this now” where Buck is angry and hurt and resentful (because Eddie has had years to tell him and Tommy is a good man and a great boyfriend and someone Buck could easily fall in love with and Buck is happy, he’s finally happy, in a way he has been desperately trying to be and could never quite seem to get to, so why now, why when I needed to hear it years ago, why now when it’s just going to ruin everything, how dare you—) that results in Buddie Divorce Era 2.0 would be…so incredibly sexy.

i don't what it is, and i don't want to reduce it to buddie, but what if there is that "oh" realization and the devastating reality that maybe, this time, he's too late
like how everything about shannon was too fast. married to too fast, grew up too fast. died too fast, not enough time
everything after her has been like that as well. things with ana was too fast. things with marisol too, but he caught himself
and now he's trying again with kim, and he's going for that chase and that high, chasing a ghost going fast and fast and we know what happens with fast things, right
eventually they crash
and then everything slows down
and time catches up on you and eddie doesn't realize it at the moment, but the whole time, every time he ran out of steam, buck is at his side, matching his pace
when he needed support, an ear, a best friend, buck was at his side, step by step, synchronized. he's there whenever eddie crashes
and even still, buck is always there every time he found his motivation to chase things again
but this time for this crash, it's a little different, and when he loses gas, buck's not at his side because he's flying high on his own lane with tommy, and suddenly
eddie realizes that because he was going too fast on one lane chasing his grief and ghost
he ended up being too late to get to what he really, truly wanted

so you're telling me in an episode where a man is trying to replace his wife who left him, Eddie grapples with memories of his wife who left him and it's (re)established that the most important Trait of his wife who left him is Parent of His Child (this is emphasized by the aforementioned the Case of the Week plot). they end the episode by reminding the audience that Buck is currently the person in Eddie's life fulfilling the role of Other Parent to His Child. this of course means nothing at all.

lost the game of chance, what are the chances?
how did it end? – taylor swift
[Image description: 6 large gifs primarily of Shannon and Eddie Diaz from 9-1-1 with the lyrics to How Did It End, by Taylor Swift.
Gif 1: A split gif with Eddie on the left and Shannon on the right. The two are at dinner when Shannon tells Eddie she wants a divorce and he reacts in hurt disbelief. The text reads, "Say it once again with feeling how the death rattle breathing silenced."
Gif 2: A close up, washed out gif of Shannon after her accident, when she first sees Eddie on the scene. The text continues the line in the song, "As the soul was leaving."
Gif 3: A split gif with Shannon on the left and Eddie on the right. They're talking over facetime while Eddie's at work and Shannon is at lunch with Christopher and Isabel. They're both laughing and smiling. The text continues, "The deflation of our dreaming."
Gif 4: A colored gif with a black and white gif overlayed. In the colored gif, Eddie slumps back in the ambulance, watching as Hen and Chimney work to intubate Shannon. In the black and white gif, Eddie roars after winning a fight. The text continues, "Leaving me bereft and reeling."
Gif 5: A washed out gif of Shannon and Eddie at the beach with Christopher between them. The text continues, "My beloved ghost and me, sitting in a tree."
Gif 6: Two washed-out gifs overlayed. In the first gif, Eddie lies in a puddle of his own blood. Blended into his body is a gif of Shannon, shot from above as the first responders rush over her body after her accident. The text finishes, "D-y-i-n-g."

7x07: refusing to grieve and instead just trying to replace the person you lost won’t help and will ultimately just hurt you and everyone involved.
Eddie in probably 7x09 or 10 when this has all blown up in his face and he has hurt Buck, Kim, Marisol, Christopher, and himself: who could have seen this coming?

the thing about chasing shannon’s ghost, and the love that they shared and eddie lost, is that of course it comes from a place of grief. if eddie finally finds something that he truly, completely, and desperately wants and grabs it with both hands, that will be, in some way, like closing that last door on shannon. and of course we know that you don’t have to forget or leave behind the people you previously loved in order to love others, but we know how eddie does with guilt. so for now eddie is still a widower, shannon is still his dead wife. there is nothing new to definite eddie romantically.
but also… chasing shannon’s ghost, and the love that they shared and eddie lost, is safe. it’s the easy road, as crazy as that sounds. letting go of shannon’s ghost means eddie has to confront what he wants. who he wants. as long as eddie can keep reverting to “i miss shannon, i miss what we had” he doesn’t have to admit to himself or anyone else the truth of why his relationships are not working. why he doesn’t really want them to.
“i'm going out with my dead's wife's doppelgänger behind my girlfriend’s back” is a pretty damn convenient excuse for why the relationship could (will) fail. but it’s not the truth of it.
shannon’s ghost is not what’s haunting eddie. what’s haunting eddie is what hides behind shannon’s ghost: the truth about who he is, what he wants, and who he desires.

Wow, this moment is so explicitly spirk-y.
Here's Bones being unreasonably nasty to Spock, as he often is:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As soon as Spock challenges Bones' statement about Spock's inability to feel, Bones like "good point, there's that whole thing you have for Jim, my bad". And Spock doesn't even pretend it's not correct, doesn't roll eyes or lift eyebrows or anything, because that is what he meant by the "Really?".
