hi! i just got finished with the second chapter of persephones in hell and!! such a great dick fic and i loved getting to see the titans. but i’m feeling like i’m interpreting things wrong wrt bruce and wanted to clarify.. what are you thoughts on bruce? ik he’s obsessive and has a tendency to manipulate and shut out those close to him, but i’ve never gotten the feeling he’s actually physically or emotionally abusing these kids. i’m picking up a vibe in the fic tho that some of the titans think bruce is abusive (towards dick at least) and i’m wondering if it was your intention to write bruce that way, or just that he’s perceived as such? (i’m aware also that dicks perspective is justifiably skewed)
i could just be over thinking it. sorry for bothering you. i don’t mean this in a “problematic bruce get cancelled” kind of way. i feel bad if it comes across that way sorry i’m just genuinely curious :)
hello! i won’t go into specifics cause this is like… the thesis of part three, but no — i personally don’t subscribe to the idea that bruce is an irredeemable abusive asshole. there’s plenty of evidence for him being one in comics, but a lot of it is dregs of frank miller era masochismo, and i prefer batman to be fundamentally kind.
in saying that tho — the titans are right. i think u would be very hard pressed to find a comic where bruce and dick (of all his kids) don’t have an unhealthy, codependent relationship. bruce inspires debilitating loyalty in many people he works with, but dick has it the absolute worst of everyone because he’s been emotionally regulating bruce since he was eight years old.
when people say dick was parentified, i think there’s some confusion about what it means in this context. it’s not about a child raising their younger siblings (dick was out of the house and an adult by the time jason came around) but more that a child is made responsible for the emotional well-being of their parent. we see this in scarecrow year one, in teen titans year one, and sporadically all over canon. the titans, looking in, see dick still carrying bruce’s expectations well into adulthood and hate it.
i also think bruce being a maliciously abusive character is a disservice to the characterisation of everyone else — there is absolutely no way dick would’ve let bruce adopt anyone else if that was the case. there’s no way babs would. tim isn’t an idiot, he would’ve kept his distance. same with jason. cass has a very twisted understanding of pain, but she could literally read his body language and be able to tell if he was hurting someone on purpose. clark and diana would snap him like a twig.
i think it’s a lot more interesting if a kind person who wants to do good is so pathologically afraid of losing the people he loves that he’ll hurt them in response, and was so traumatised that after twenty years his sole pillar of emotional regulation was a boy who’d just suffered the same trauma he had.

You know something that sticks out to me that I think most people tend to brush over in the 'Dick gets kicked out after getting shot by the Joker' is that the inciting incident isn't entirely about Dick getting shot. Like, obviously that's part of it, but I'm suprised more fics don't touch on the rest of the story, namely this part:
Tumblr media
Batman (1940) #408
Like idk the way i interpreted the story was that choices that both Dick and Bruce make here are what matter more than Dick getting shot, because Dick telling Bruce he's fine and to go after Joker, and Bruce choosing to do just that are what lead to Dick nearly falling off the edge of a skyscraper
Tumblr media
Batman (1940) #408
Like if the wind had blown just a little bit differently, or Dick had rolled or slid, or the ledge wasn't there, he would have died. So when Bruce says this
Tumblr media
Batman (1940) #408
He is talking somewhat literally, like i know the comic was written to point out that child sidekicks as a whole are bad, but Bruce DID choose to go after the joker rather than making sure that Dick was okay and that was based off of his own trust in Dick's analysis of his own condition. And Dick has every pressure to not be truthful in the circumstance - he wants the joker caught, he wants to be seen as reliable and strong and able to handle himself, he wants to be perfect and perfect means living up to impossible standards. But it's also true that he simply could have made a mistake and misjudged, or that he would have been fine if Bruce hadn't taken so long. Anyways the image of Dick sitting up at night haunted by 'if I'd only just held out a little longer, if only i was better/stronger this wouldn't have happened' and Bruce haunted by 'Dick almost died because of a choice that i made, i shouldn't have listened to him, i shouldn't have trusted him' when trust is something that Dick needs is just... screams

Hi! Thoughts on Dick and Tim during Murderer/Fugitive, and their argument over whether Bruce killed Vesper?
(My interpretation was that to Dick, Robin means not only unwavering loyalty to Batman, but unwavering faith (“I’m dismayed that there can be a Robin who believes Batman could be guilty of murder”)— whereas to Tim it’s more about having faith in the symbol and the mission, not the person)
Tumblr media
Tim (suspicious that Bruce has emotional blind spots and is about to get a case wrong): Nightwing. Channel Two. Go discreet. (Gotham Knights 1)
Tumblr media
Dick: I don't - I don't see how you can say that and still wear that uniform... Tim: The guy who gave it to me–the guy who wore it first–HE taught me never to back away from any possibility that might lead to the truth. And he still believes that… right? (Gotham Knights 26)
Ooh, look, it’s one of my favorite comics of all time. <33
Yeah!!  I think hmmm.  Both Dick and Tim are intensely loyal to Bruce and they both care about him a lot.  But they do think about their loyalty to him in very different ways.
Also tl;dr I am biased here but also I am right dsfsfs - although I do think that Tim's loyalty is kinda to the symbol, I also think a big part of the issue here is that Tim's more unambiguous personal faith is given to Dick, not to Bruce. When Dick says, How can you wear that uniform and not have faith in Bruce, Tim answers, essentially, I wear this uniform because I have faith in you. Which is not what Dick wants to hear!
I had SO MANY THOUGHTS about this, so below the cut:
Dick and Bruce and the importance of faith
Tim and Bruce and the importance of doubt
More rambling Dick-and-Tim-and-Bruce thoughts
Dick and Bruce and faith
Tumblr media
Dick’s notion of loyalty is pretty firm: “It's no secret Batman and I have had our... issues. But I won't be involved in anything that hurts him.”  His connection to Bruce, from the very beginning, is all about their shared sense of mission: the oath in the candlelight. Dick’s got this intense loyalty that he feels he owes to Bruce, and he feels betrayed when it seems like Bruce isn’t reciprocating, because as far as Dick’s concerned they owe it to each other.
I think you owe me an explanation, Bruce. ... We were the Dynamic Duo, don’t you remember? / If Bruce Wayne doesn’t exist, who am I the son of? / I know you have to live through restraint. I understand how brevity is your moral compass. But why lie to me, of all people? Why would you lie to me. ME. ... I trust you more than anyone. / I've trusted Batman with my life since I was eight. / On top of everything, he's my father now, too... I want to hit people just for thinking bad thoughts about him.
Dick’s first experience of Bruce is fighting by his side.  He initially conceptualizes his role of Robin as about being steadfast partners to each other, and although he'll sometimes later recategorize it as a kid's role, that doesn't change the way he thinks of his own relationship to Bruce: partners, no matter what.
Dick fights with Bruce a lot - he'll pick a physical fight in this very arc! He's not afraid to stand up to Bruce! He wants to be independent and bristles when he feels bossed around or ignored or when Bruce is dismissive or doesn't listen or doesn't call on him for help! But paradoxically, he stands up to Bruce because he has faith in him. Dick respects Bruce enough to confront him and he expects Bruce to offer him the same respect in return. He'll pour out his heart to Bruce because despite everything, some part of him expects Bruce to have an answer, to step up, to be the person Dick's determined to believe he can be.
Tim and Bruce and doubt
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By contrast, Tim initially interacts with Bruce like a detective stalking a criminal.  He collects newspaper reports. He follows Bruce and takes photos of him and gathers evidence to present to Dick. He goes to talk to Dick, not Bruce, about Bruce’s problems—and Tim will pretty consistently continue to talk about Bruce to Dick (or occasionally to Alfred), to work behind Bruce’s back, to be frank with Dick in ways that he’s not frank with Bruce.  Tim’s often at pains to insist that he does respect and care about Bruce, but one of the reasons he has to keep insisting this verbally is because his actions and assumptions suggest a lack of trust.
Tim’s first experience of Bruce is of someone who could be a knight or a monster, who needs help and intervention, who can be loved but not entirely trusted.  Someone who isn’t gonna be okay on his own; someone who needs saving and fixing; someone whose sense of himself can’t be entirely trusted or listened to.  Batman needs a Robin.  No matter what he thinks he wants.
In New Titans 71, Wolfman writes Dick musing about Tim as a Robin and how he’s different from Dick himself, and thinking, “He questions more.”  Much later, in Teen Titans/Outsiders, Kory will note the same difference.  Which is a funny thing to write given all Dick’s fights with Bruce—but I also think it’s a true insight!  Tim’s default is questioning.  Almost his entire tenure as Robin is spent as Bruce's apprentice, not his kid, and that affects his attitude a lot. He never takes his trust in Bruce for granted.  It’s carefully considered—and it could be revoked.  A part of Tim is always judging and measuring Bruce, deciding which qualities he thinks are admirable and which ones not so much, what's worrisome and what's not, analyzing whether Bruce is looking after his health or not, etc etc.
You have to promise me something. You'll listen to Alfred and at least call it a night and give yourself a chance to heal. / How many times are we going to have this conversation, Bruce? You died tonight. For almost two minutes you were dead. / Maybe Batman doesn't need to know about this. / He's a hard guy to get to know. / I have friends. He has... associates. / Bruce has been on the job the longest. It’s slowly driven him mad and eaten the human part right out of him. / My boss - my teacher is gone, gone as in fled, but also gone out of his head. And now he may be a murderer as well. / I think maybe Batman has gone crazy. / Don't like the risks he's taking. Don't like the way he spoke to me. I hope it's the concussion talking. I don't want to think his edge is coming back.
It’s not that Dick never worries about Bruce in this way.  He does!  In the arc right before Lonely Place of Dying, his inner monologue compares Bruce to an alcoholic. And IMO it’s strongly implied in Gotham Knights 26 (the Dick-and-Tim fight about Bruce maybe being a murderer) that one of the reasons Dick is so forceful and so upset by Tim’s suggestion is that he’s suppressing his own private doubts.  Tim’s dragging into the open something that Dick is refusing to look closely at.  Dick's faith is an act of will—if I’m going to be Bruce’s ally, then I can’t believe he’s capable of this.  I can’t allow myself to believe it.  And if I believe he’s capable of it, then I’m not acting as his ally anymore:
Tumblr media
Dick: "I think it’s… admirable that you can continue serving a system in which you have so little faith. But I can’t. I can’t, Tim. I cannot believe that Batman is guilty of murder. I do not believe it, and I will not believe it. And I can’t stand with anyone who does."
You don't get this upset about somebody saying that the Earth is flat, you know? Dick's not laughing the accusation off; instead, he's drawing a hard line - I will not consider this. I refuse to go there. The topic is off-limits.
(In the same comic, you've got a similar fight going on between Alfred and Leslie with similar stakes - Alfred refusing to believe it but clearly harboring secret doubts, Leslie openly suspicious.)
General Dick-and-Tim-and-Bruce thoughts
Tim to friends: "I lie to Batman" (Teen Titans 3) Dick to Bruce: "But why lie to me, of all people? Why would you lie to me. ME." (Outsiders 21)
It’s always been Tim’s instinct to strategize around Bruce rather than with him. Tim will lie and circumvent Bruce’s orders, whereas Dick will disagree to his face.  Dick respects Bruce enough to give him his say and argue back, whereas Tim tends to think of Bruce as an admired-but-unstable figure who you sometimes listen to but sometimes plan around.
And I think you get the core of that in this arc!
Tim voices his concerns pretty frankly to Dick, but is way more circumspect in front of Bruce, because he doesn't entirely trust Bruce - Tim thinks "is Bruce stable and trustworthy" is "a decision that Dick and I will make in consultation with each other," not a decision that Bruce can make.
In the past, Dick has basically gone along with this kind of thing - he and Tim gossip about Bruce a lot! So it's not surprising that Tim's first thought is that they can confer on it again. But when it becomes a question of "is Bruce murderous, criminal, immoral," then Dick's loyalty kicks in. That's too serious an accusation for Dick to feel entirely comfortable talking about it behind Bruce's back.
Generally IMO, how Dick conceptualizes his loyalty tends to vary a lot depending on who he's talking to. So e.g. in general, Dick's more likely to gripe about Bruce to Tim than he is to gripe about Bruce to the Titans, because he knows that Tim basically likes Bruce. Tim's Robin! Dick takes for granted that Tim is loyal. So it's not disloyal to complain about Bruce to Tim, because Dick and Tim are both on Bruce's side. Dick complains to Tim about Bruce abruptly summoning them into No Man's Land, but doesn't share the same complaint with the Titans. And that's because the Titans aren't friendly toward Bruce in general, and so bitching to them would be disloyal, would be airing dirty laundry outside the family.
By contrast, Tim's a safe audience... until you end up in a situation like Bruce Wayne: Murderer, when suddenly it sounds like Tim may not be on Bruce's side anymore. What are you saying, Tim?
I do think that if Tim had been right, if Bruce had been a murderer, Dick would've ultimately helped take him down. He's very defensive of Bruce because that's how Dick understands the obligations of loyalty, but... he's part of confronting Bruce and demanding explanations in the Cave, and he and Tim (and Cass and Babs) all investigate Bruce together. I think if there had been very very very credible evidence, Dick would've helped fight to take evil!Bruce down. But I also think he would've never stopped mentally searching for an explanation: mind control? body double? I think he'd have an incredibly hard time accepting that Bruce had just murdered someone.
And I mean! In Dick's defense! I don't think Bruce would! At the end of the day, I think Bruce deserves all kinds of criticism in post-Crisis, but I also tend to think that Dick's read of him is a bit more accurate than Tim's, that even though Bruce can act monstrously in all kinds of ways he is at bottom a person who would never ever ever murder a civilian girlfriend no matter how unstable he got and no matter how threatened his secret was. Dick might have a bit more faith in him than he deserves, but at the same time, Tim's jumping to the worst-case scenario pretty fast here, much as he does during Batman: RIP, and I think you could definitely argue that Dick - who's known Bruce longer and better, who lived with Bruce for years instead of just worked with him - has a better and more instinctive sense of Bruce's strengths instead of just his faults.
(And in Tim's defense, as Babs is about to point out to Dick, Bruce has not been behaving especially well recently and Tim has a lot of reasons to be frustrated with him. And Tim's not the only one - Babs is pretty suspicious too!)
.... And of course, I mean, as a Dick and Tim fan, I love that this arc makes very clear that Tim feels his own loyalty is to the symbol, yes, but also that he associates the symbol with Dick first and with Dick's sense of morals, that he trusts Dick, that he sees the costume as something Dick gave him and that's the legacy that he's trying to live up to, to never walk away from the truth, that he thinks the two of them need to be willing to consider the worst of Bruce .... and also the delightful paradox that this isn't loyalty that Dick asked for or wants or welcomes!!
Dick has always taken for granted that Tim was loyal to Bruce, not to Dick; he's not at all happy to hear the opposite. This isn't a heartwarming moment for them but instead a really fraught one, because it's a declaration of Tim's loyalty but it's a declaration of Tim's loyalty that's specifically about not offering unconditional loyalty to Bruce, so Dick feels like he's being invited to be traitors together instead of feeling touched by Tim's trust. Tim's loyalty is something he has to learn to come to terms with rather than something he's happy to have.
And I think that's great!! I love love love these kinds of complicated emotional dynamics (TM), and Bruce Wayne: Murderer is full of them. It's such a fun read.

may I ask if you have any fic recs handy?? dw if not
Hmmm, well, let's see, what have I read recently that I especially liked . . .
. . . oh okay yeah I got way too into this, lol. wELP, such is life!!
Eyes Like Kryptonite, by dragonez. Supercorp. Lena Luthor gets an either time or dimensionally-displaced Kryptonian on her balcony who inexplicably seems to think a Luthor can help him, and then she has to deal with that. Kara does not love this development (but definitely loves Lena) and Conner just wants to get home to his family.
I Want It That Way, by WynterSky. TimKon. I cannot even explain to you how good this fucking fic is. Just--TimKon, but make it 90's. Why are you still here? Go read it. Go read it NOW.
Catherine/Bruce Medieval AU, by iselsis and PotatoLady. Catherine/Bruce, past Catherine/Willis. What it says on the tin, and also omegaverse. I am WAY too into this fic, hah, "Bruce saves Catherine and takes in her and Jason both" is so, so small a genre but so, so GOOD a genre. [ tw: past rape ]
You and me and them. Let's be pack. Let's show the world we chose each other, by Ace_of_Hearts4444. TimKon. Tim finds out Kon is a newly-presented stray omega in an AU where being packless is a Big Fucking Problem and Young Justice has some fucking FEELINGS about that fact.
The tale of a cat who stole a diamond boy, by Ace_of_Hearts4444. TimKon. I'm not really into "Tim is Stray/Catlad" AUs, but I am VERY into this TimKon concept. Also, like yes, obviously Tim is exactly unhinged enough to do this.
in the shadows, by Kieron_ODuibhir. Batman was Bruce Wayne's imaginary friend, but now he's Dick Grayson's. I could cut a bitch for more of this concept, oh my GOD. 💔
A Hummingbird Suspended, by poisonivory. Thad/Match. Thad gets out of the Speed Force and wants to fuck shit up, but unfortunately Match is very attractive and has even more unfortunately grown some morals.
Gut Feeling, by Ao3time. Lois finds a superclone in a lab and welp he's hers now. No takebacksies.
With Violet Light, by Evilpixie. Jason Todd wants to blow up the Batmobile and ends up a Star Sapphire. There's, uh, an adjustment period.
This isn't how things are supposed to go. But we've always been unorthodox., by RenkonNairu. Superbat, TimKon. Kryptonian omegas are not the same as human ones, and human alphas are not the same as Kryptonian ones. And therefore Bruce Wayne and Tim Drake are having a fucking time of it with Clark Kent and Conner Luthor, and Lex is just doing his damnedest to ruin as much shit as he possibly can. [ tw: rape ]
Talk That Slick Talk, by thebodydies. Kenan/Kon. Kenan meets a weirdly friendly stranger who's apparently trying to pick him up. Kon is literally just wearing fucking glasses, man. Also I desperately need more of this pairing, especially in this interpretation, please and thank you. [ this is just smutty kinky smut and you should immediately go bask in it ]
( annnnnd not-DC-but-still-superheroes bonus round!! )
I wanna be that guy (the girl under you), by Stackthedeck. SpideyTorch. Peter Parker/Johnny Storm + kink = gender?? [ more kinky smut for you to go bask in!! ]

Request! So could you do how the bat boys + batman/Bruce if you could, would react to their s/o surprise hugging them?
Have a good night
Bat Family Getting Surprise Hugs Headcanons
Tumblr media

Masterlist Navigation
Bruce Wayne
Tumblr media
• Bruce would be pretty subtle in his reaction to a surprise hug from you as he’s probably had them from you before or expects you to be there. He would still get a little bit surprised though, and on the rare chance you could get a jump out of him.
• He really does love any form of physical affection that you give to him even if he isn’t vocal about it much. So he’s definitely going to enjoy your hugs whether he saw them coming or were a complete surprise after feeling lonely for so long.
• Bruce does get used to your surprise hugs after a while and starts to just expect them after he figures out when you tend to give them. However, he does not get used to the comfort and joy he feels every time, so that’s always something that brightens his day and he looks forward to.
• If the two of you are alone then Bruce would be just as affectionate back to you as you are to him because he feels safe to do so and doesn’t worry about what others think when alone. When you’re in public or out on a mission though, he’d be much more rigid and probably would reciprocate as much.
• Once he’s comfortable with it Bruce would be the type of person to surprise hug you back when you’re alone or busy as a way to give you a quick little harmless scare. This may even become a way of regular affection between you two, and as long as it doesn’t interrupt anything serious then there’s no problems.
Dick Grayson
Tumblr media
• Dick is always happy when he feels you giving him surprise hugs and gladly accepts them every time. Plus, he wouldn’t feel jumpy about them as he’s always aware of his surroundings - so really they aren’t much of a surprise.
• Physical affection is one of Dick’s love languages so he absolutely loves when you incorporate this into your displays of affection. He’ll always enjoy it just as long as the situation isn’t wildly inappropriate or dangerous.
• Rather than him simply just getting used to you giving him surprise hugs, he instead gets more comfortable with them. Whether this be around people or the two of you alone, the more you surprise him with hugs the more he anticipates and relaxes when they happen; although this may differ on bad nights after patrol or missions.
• Dick is very loving towards you when you give him surprise hugs, just like he is to you at most other times. But he does give you a bit more affection after this as he sometimes interpreters it as you wanting to grab his attention for a short while.
• It’s almost impossible for Dick to keep his hands off of you or to stay away from you all day, so if you’ve both been busy he will surprise you back with a hug of his own. It becomes a regular things between the two of you and eventually it gets to a point where you almost expect them and never get startled by one another doing so.
Jason Todd
Tumblr media
• Jason may seem a little bit jumpy in his first reaction to the surprise hug you give him, but it isn’t something you need to worry about. He doesn’t get a lot of physical affection and has conditioned himself to be vigilant of his surroundings so he eases up and relaxes into them after a while of you giving them to him.
• Deep down Jason actually loves when you give him surprise hugs and it hits him quite deep, especially if he’s never been in a relationship where his partner is as affectionate and cuddly as you. It reminds him that he’s wanted and you’re there for him, which also makes his think of how he’s behaving in dangerous situations so that he doesn’t get too hurt before he’s able to get back to you.
• Jason does get used to your surprise hugs after a while, and it doesn’t take that long if it’s something you tend to do on a frequent basis. However, if you really do this rarely then he isn’t able to anticipate when you’re going to do it which makes his back stay up and on edge for a little time longer before he’s able to figure out your routine in doing it.
• If you surprise hug him while he’s busy then he will continue what he’s doing but will give you his undivided attention simultaneously. And if this isn’t the case then he’ll be just as affectionate and touchy back to you that you are to him as a way of reciprocating love and feelings.
• If this is a regular way of you showing your love for Jason then he might pick it up for himself and give you surprise hugs of his own on occasion. But he probably wouldn’t do it too often and certainly wouldn’t be a big fan of doing it when other around as he feels more vulnerable with his emotions during this time.
Tim Drake
Tumblr media
• Tim absolutely adores it when you give him surprise hugs, especially if he’s been having a particularly rough or dull day. Immediately you brighten his day and being unexpected is the perfect way to do that for him.
• Unless Tim is in a dire or serious situation he will always enjoy surprise hugs from you and will be very visible in this. He also doesn’t mind if other people are around as he’s pretty open about his relationship with you and being affectionate in front of others.
• Just like everyone else, Tim will of course get used to having you give him surprise hugs if you happen to do it on a regular basis. But if not then he’ll figure out the pattern of you doing it after a while and will almost expect you when the time comes around for you to surprise him again.
• Tim is usually visibly happy and giddy and would bring you into a proper hug if he’s able to turn around and do so. But if he’s busy then he’ll bring you into an affectionate conversation and may even bring some inside jokes into it as a sense of verbal and emotional intimacy.
• If he sees that you aren’t around too many people and aren’t particularly busy then he’ll probably find a way to do it back to you, and you certainly get more of a shock from surprise hugs than he does. He’s much better at concealing himself so you hardly even know he coming.
Damian Wayne
Tumblr media
• Damian is certainly not the well versed in physical affection so this surprise hug may genuinely surprise him the first few times. He isn’t exactly sure how to respond or what to do but after this happens a few times he settles into it, and he is a very quick learner.
• In terms of enjoying it, Damian definitely does like receiving this display of affection from you; but, he would prefer if you did it while he was relaxing or able to settle with you. This is instead of him being busy as most of the things he needs to deal with tend to be high on important and dangerous scales.
• Damian is extremely well aware of his surroundings so after a short while he doesn’t even need to get used to the hug being a “surprise” as he can already see you coming. But he does get more accepting of hugs in one sense, around others though that’s a different story.
• Depending on who is around and what he was doing reflects what he typically does afterwards, but usually he gives you some kind of hug in return or other forms of subtle affection. He is not a big fan of PDA though, so don’t expect much unless you’re in private together.
• Damian isn’t really the kind of person to be big in giving surprise hugs to other people so this wouldn’t be something he picks up for himself. Instead he would just give you hugs with your acknowledgement and work his affection around this way.

Batman #428: A Death in the Family
It’s the way that it goes from “Should I get in touch with Master Dick, Master Bruce?” “No…No, Alfred. I’ll handle this by myself.”
Tumblr media
The New Titans #55
To “Bruce never called to tell me what happened to Jason.”
It just makes me want to scream because you can interpret Bruce’s words and how they connect to him not calling Dick in more than one way! “No…No, Alfred. I’ll handle this by myself.” This could easily mean that Bruce can handle calling Dick himself to let him know about Jason’s passing if you acknowledge the question Bruce is answering, but he doesn’t end up doing so, maybe even unintentionally forgetting to do so. But it can also mean that Bruce doesn’t want Dick to be contacted at all, not even by Bruce himself, because he wants to handle his grief and justice and his mission as Batman by himself. And contacting Dick is a sure fire way for Bruce not getting that wish. And this can be seen with Bruce following up and saying “No help from now on. That’s the way I want it.” It just drives me crazy.

Note
(I hope I worded this right and that it does not come across as rude or snarky, I genuinely want to hear your thoughts) So does that mean your interpretation of Bruce is that he is, how do I say it, “indefinitely fucked/flawed”? That there are not many moments where he did goodness for the pure sake of it? Or it’s something like, 90% flawed 10% good?
It actually depends on who writes him, and on the media we're taking into consideration. I know that this might sound contradictory with my previous post, but I honestly don't think there's one interpretation of a character who's 80+ year old and went through the hands of hundreds of writers.
There are a few things that only "happened once" if you understand what I mean, like Cassandra's story. That story has only one iteration, there are no variants to take into consideration or other Batman media that explore it, so we can judge it by what happened that one time, but this is a rarity among the most important Batman stories. Think of UTRH. Bruce is way less ruthless in the animated version and the ending is very different from what happens in the comics.
Bruce did a lot of good things for the pure sake of it, there's no denying that. He's able to offer a helping hand even to the most monstruous, he will help criminals because he genuinely wants them to better themselves. He will get down to his knees to hug and comfort a crying child, he will use his money and resource and do whatever he can to heal his city.
But he will also beat people to the point of crippling them, he will send folks to jail for the most minor of offences, he considers disabled and "mentally challenged" people as a burden for society.
He loves the kids he keeps around and would die for them. But he also hits Dick and will beat him into a pulp when Dick refuses to do his bidding. He suffered for Jason's death and wanted to kill Joker in the heat of the moment, but will also cut Jason's neck and leave him to die again in order to save Joker's life. As protective and sweet as he is with Tim, he used Stephanie to manipulate him into becoming Robin again, acting terribly towards both kids. And I could go on but you get the picture.
All of these things shouldn't coexist but they do because the character is written by different people with different opinions and understanding of right and wrong, of what is an isn't an acceptable behavior for a man and a parental figure to have, and of who the character is and stands for in general.
It might seem that I don't like Bruce all that much and I surely don't like him as a person, but I also love him as a character for what he represents historically, for the nuance of his many depictions. Though I rarely ever defend him when it comes to people criticising his actions, because those actions need to be criticised. And I will hiss at canon stuff that insists on making Bruce always look like the flawless hero because he ain't it, and at people who claim that nonsense takes are canon (like Cass being his favorite) because I have a personal issue with people taking a headcanon that comes from the fact that they didn't read the comics, and shoving it on everyone's face demanding they accept it as "what actually happened".
I hope it makes sense.

our last chance
- a/n: it's mentioned that the reader is the daughter of bruce and selina, but it's never mentioned that she's biologically related, so you could definitely interpret it as her being adopted by them!

7. step one: arm’s length
- synopsis\\ you watch as dick runs off after batman betrays him for the last time, causing the family to fall apart. after an explosion, and a time machine, with a speedster to help you, you have one last chance to stop history from repeating itself.

you sat in your room staring at the grey clock hanging on your wall. it was ticking away towards noon, and you had yet to go downstairs. you'd been up for a few hours, but you couldn't bring yourself to go down there until you were sure you were ready to start step one. you and bart agreed that to start things off, you needed to distance dick from barbara because the less attached he is the less everything will hurt should you fail to stop the affair.
     but how? you were gonna start by getting in the way of them spending time together, which you didn't think babs would mind too much. and you were planning on pushing him close to his other friends like kori and wally. but, would that be enough? you got up from your desk and walked over to your bed to lay back down. you couldn't stay in your room forever, you were on a time limit.
     maybe you could try what bart does and plan as you go? it sounded new, and it sounded uncomfortable. but it worked for bart, so maybe it'd work for you? either way, nothing would get done if you stayed in your room so you got up went to find dick. it wasn't quite noon yet, so you started by checking the kitchen. as you assumed, he was sitting there eating cereal with tim.
     "hey y/n," tim said as you walked over to them and sat next to him.
     "hey timmy, are either of you doing anything today?"
     "i have plans with wally, why what's up?" dick said.
     "nothing really, i just have a boring day ahead of me," you told him. "is bart coming with you?"
     "bart?" tim asked, confused as to why you were bringing him up. you had to remember that at this point in time you'd seen him maybe once or twice in passing.
     "yeah, flash's grandson right?" you said smoothly, then looked back at dick.
     "i'm not sure, why?" dick asked. he was eyeing you suspiciously. you'd already let it slip to him that you'd hung out with bart once. you didn't wanna mess anything up for yourself.
     "if he's gonna be there, can i come along too?" if not to watch how dick is doing, you at least wanted to hang out with bart. even with all the time you'd already been spending with him, you kinda just wanted to see him more.
"since when have you liked hanging out with bart? i didn't even know you knew him," tim said, also suspicious now. you kinda forgot to think about how were you gonna explain it to him.
"neither did i," dick said, leading you further into a corner where you'd have to explain yourself.
"well i don't, not yet anyway," you said, it was a lame response but what else were you gonna say.
"and you want to because?" tim continued, if you were gonna take an interest in one of his best friends then he was gonna find out exactly why.
"he's cute," you blurred out. cute? well, you'd officially screwed yourself over. dick's eyes widened and tim's mouth was slightly open in shock.
"you can't date him"/"bart's off limits", they both shouted.
"keep your voices down before someone hears you, jesus! that's not how i meant that," but was it? "so can i come or not?"
"absolutely not," dick said. you saw this coming the second those words left your mouth.
time to say something else that was gutsy, "if bart is there i'm coming. i'm not gonna date him, so you don't have to freak out," you said.
"in that case i'm coming too," tim chimed in. "i wanna make sure there's nothing already going on between the two of you." maybe winging it wasn't gonna work out too well for you.
~~~~~
     "i thought you were planning on going somewhere," you said to dick, unenthusiastically.
     "the batcave is somewhere," he said, tossing a batarang up into the air and catching it.
     "somewhere out," you clarified. you turned your attention over to tim who was sitting on the ground, lost in thought and mumbling to himself. "are you okay?" you asked him.
     "i just don't get what you see in him," he started. you'd been waiting for wally to show up, hopefully with bart, and you were all bored out of your minds. "i mean, he's bart!"
     "glad to see you think so highly of your best friend," you said sarcastically.
     "you know what i mean," he said. "do you even really remember what he looks like? how can you be sure he's actually cute?" he whined.
     "timmy, i meant that in a friendly way i swear!" you were hoping the speedsters would show up soon and end this conversation.
     "what does that even mean! besides, what makes you think he's even gonna show up," tim said. he had a point, but only because he didn't know what you knew. you were sure bart would show up to see you and dick, but you couldn't explain that.
     so instead, you just went with another lame excuse, "he'll probably show up because he knows you're here." as you finished saying that, another realization crossed your mind. bart didn't know that you'd accidentally called him cute. he was gonna get grilled by tim, and maybe even dick, without really knowing why. you'd tell him, but how do you just casually tell someone you called them cute to your brothers?
     you decided bart was just gonna have to manage, you'd make it up to him somehow later. thankfully, the zeta tubes finally glowed and two lit up figures stepped out. "hey dick," wally greeted. "i hope you don't mind that i brought bart along, he kept pestering me about seeing tim because apparently seeing him all the time at titans tower isn't enough," wally sighed.
     you smiled, bart pulled through just like you knew he would. you could always count on him, and that meant more to you than you could express. bart smiled at you and sped over to where you and tim were and dick and wally started a conversation of their own. "hey bart," tim eyed him.
"hey tim?" bart raised an eyebrow at him, then turned to look at you hoping you'd say something to at least clue him in on what might be about to happen.
instead, you gave an apologetic look as tim continued, "what a coincidence seeing you here."
     bart looked like got what was happening, "well i knew you were gonna be here," he said. and that seemed to be enough for tim. you may have slipped up, but at least he thought it was one sided.
     then dick called out, "hey we're going on a donut run with barbara and artemis, do you want anything while we're out?" from the stairs.
     you replied with, "no we're good!" and tim looked over at you disappointed.
     "i wanted chocolate donuts," he said, but dick and wally were already in the elevator shaft.
     "i'll go tell him," you offered, and took that chance to leave as well. you went back to the manor, but the two of them were already gone of course. you paced around up stairs trying to think of a plan. maybe if you caused a fake scene or whatever then you'd be able to call batgirl to it and get her away from dick?
as bad as you felt about keeping him away from his girlfriend, you needed to keep them at arms length for his own good. you went back down to the batcave where tim and bart were now nerding out together. "i wasn't able to catch them, but maybe you and bart could just meet them there?"
"aren't they going on a double date? it'd be awkward if we just showed up for donuts," tim said.
"so then call stephanie and make it a triple date," you suggested.
"what about bart?" tim asked, and you replied maybe just a bit too quickly.
"bart will be fine!" you said, which made tim look at you weirdly. he then looked over at bart who only agreed with you. "plus it's not like dick is gonna mind, he always says the more the merrier," you added.
"yeah i guess," tim said as he pulled out his phone to call stephanie. he started walking back to the manor and called out, "i'll see you later." he probably assumed bart was going to home and you were thankful he actually left instead of staying to watch and make sure.
but then it hit you, "can you zeta back to central city and then run here? wait do you know how to get in without using the zeta tubes?" you said to him.
"yeah, i've done it a couple times with tim. but why do i need to leave and run back?" he asked, confused.
"because knowing dick he's gonna come back and check the zeta tube records and he's gonna get suspicious if he sees you never left even after tim joined them," you explained.
"why not just lie about dating or something, wouldn't that make it easier to sneak around for this plan?" he asked, and it took you a hot second to realize he was being fully serious.
"bart, that's sweet but have you met anyone in my family? you wouldn't live to help me with the second step," you said.
"you're exaggerating, right?" he asked oh so innocently.
"after living with damian i'm not so sure that i am," you told him. "if we ever date we'd have to keep it a secret."
"if we ever date?" he asked with a teasing tone and you immediately became hyper-aware of what you'd just said. at least it was salvageable.
"well i just, uh you know, like hypothetically," you stumbled all over your words.
and with that he shook his head with a quiet laugh and zeta'd back to central city. he then showed back up a couple minutes later and the two of you got to work. you walked over to the bat-computer and pulled up barbara's location.
who knew bruce's stalker habits would one day help you too. "maybe i can anonymously send her phone a random location in gotham and get her to show up?"
"won't she be able to eventually trace it back to the bat-computer though? how would you do that?" he asked. that made you think, and after a few moments you finally had a solid idea.
"okay so i think i have a plan, you should go to the café that they're at. if you can beat them there, which you probably can because tim is with them now, then you can tell me when you see babs look down at her phone and i can send a fake bat signal that looks real enough for her to take it seriously and show up, but also enough like a glitch for her to think that's what happened when she shows up to an empty alley.
"what about dick?" bart asked, which was reasonable but you didn't think you'd have to worry about it.
     "if we're fast enough then babs will tell him she had to dip and i bet she's gonna tell him she can handle it on his own and that he should stay with the others. i really don't think she's gonna go out of her way to spend time with him right now, which kinda makes this easier for us," you told him.
     "okay yeah, that makes sense," he said. "so should i run over now?"
     "yes, and hurry," you urged him. he sped off and about a minute and a half later you got a text from him.
bart: okay, she's sitting down at one of the booths
i'm standing awkwardly at the bus stop across the street
          oh wait she's looking down at her phone!
     as soon as that text popped up you hit the button on the bat-computer that sent the signal. and then immediately canceled it. although you couldn't see it, barbara had a look of confusion on her face that was soon followed by a look of relief. as sad as it was, you were right. she was glad she didn't have to spend the day with dick, and so she took off.
bart: she's grabbing her jacket and getting up
          i think your plan worked!
you: yes!
         you should head back here before the others show up and see you
     he left you on read but about a minute and half later you were met with a gust of wind and bart. "so now that we have some free time," he smirked, "let's go back to what you said earlier."
     "what i said earlier?" you asked him. you were hoping he wasn't referencing what you assumed he was.
     "if we were to date," and somehow his smile grew just a little bit more.
     "it was just a hypothetical, i swear!" you said. he'd gotten his flirty personality from wally, no doubt. it was oddly likeable. but you just saw him as a friend, you were pretty sure. you just happened to sometimes say some silly things. that's all.
     "uh huh, whatever you say," he teased. but at this point, you were smiling too. well, you were smiling until you felt your phone buzzing. you pulled it out to see,
     INCOMING CALL: dick :3
Please don't take this the wrong way, but for the most part I think you should stick to doing analysis for Barbara, Cassandra and Dick (when it comes to Batman-related characters at least)
Some of the things you have said about other characters over the years are ridiculously wrong and whenever big fans/expert of those characters try to correct you or just have a proper conversation, you get a nasty knows-it-all attitude with them and your responses are extremely condescending for no reason.
I know you read a lot of comics and some of your posts are very informed and on-the-nail, but sometimes there are things that can be up for personal interruptions and your interruption isn't always the only true interruption.
Anon I completely fail to see how I could not take this the wrong way given that you insulted me, provided zero concrete examples of this happening, and failed to actually say anything constructive in this entire message. All in an anonymous ask to avoid having an actual conversation yourself. How else could you possibly have meant it?
Also "interruption"....I'm assuming you mean "interpretation," which makes your comment a very funny statement considering that it also applies to everyone interacting with me and stating their own personal interpretations. If something is up for personal interpretation, mine isn't any less valid than someone else's and I'm perfectly within my right to advocate for that interpretation on my own blog. So you might want to re-evaluate that thought.
The Nogitsune and Renfield
I’m currently in a Dracula Daily hyperfixation, so what better way to tie things back to Teen Wolf lmao
The Teen Wolf writer’s room is not known to go very deep into the pop culture references they utilize. This is a writer’s room where we got the derogatory line “Why's it starting to feel like you're Batman and I'm Robin? I don't want to be Robin all the time” meant to illustrate Stiles feeling like a lowly sidekick. This of course ignores the status of Dick Grayson… Nightwing… the sex symbol Robin. Stiles would be SO INTO THAT.
In the same vein, we get a Dracula reference in the form of the Nogitsune saying “Every Dracula needs a Renfield.” The scope of the line is about a big bad villain needing an obedient underling. That’s the meaning, open and shut case. Right?
Well, I have FEELINGS about original canon Renfield now, so you have to suffer through them too.
Pop culture Renfield is this dutiful and disgusting slave to Dracula, who’s often also overly zealous of anyone else getting close to his Master. He is timid and weak. And his madness—eating flies—is linked to the compulsion to serve.
If we assume a superficial reading from the writer’s room, this is the Renfield that the Nogitsune is meant to be directly referencing. Oliver is weak and timid, and with flies stuck in his throat, he becomes a dutiful slave.
But this is not the Renfield of someone who’s read the original novel… which unintentionally implies the Nogitsune knows Renfield through pop culture. It’s a thought that tickles me greatly because now I need to know this 1,000yo dark kitsune’s hot take on modern cinema.
In any case, Renfield from the original novel is a former boxer (muscular brawler) who has this preexisting mania with consuming life to extend his own (ie eating flies). He escapes the asylum a few times while exhibiting stalker fangirl tendencies towards Dracula, who promptly rejects him.
When Renfield meets Mina, she treats him not as a madman but as a fellow person, and Renfield is well-mannered and considerate towards her in return. Then he learns Mina is spending the night. And he knows Dracula is coming.
Renfield begs, to no avail, to be taken out of the asylum by any means necessary so that he’s not coerced into inviting Dracula inside. Let me in. Dracula only wants things when he can force himself on them, and he only acknowledges Renfield after Renfield’s become reluctant.
The night after inviting Dracula inside, when Renfield realizes Dracula fed on (raped) Mina, he becomes resolute. Dracula comes again, but this time Renfield fights him. With his bare hands. He almost wins. But Dracula is a trickster who mortally wounds Renfield.
When Renfield is discovered that night, there’s a dent in his skull that requires trephination (hole drilled into his head!) in order to make him conscious enough to speak his side of the story. Ultimately, Renfield is meant to be a sympathetic, albeit morally complex, character.
Returning back to Teen Wolf…
STILES: You did this. You got into his head NOGITSUNE: Every Dracula needs a Renfield
Renfield from the original novel is nothing like how Oliver is portrayed. Yet within Renfield’s story there’s very clear parallels between Dracula and the Nogitsune. And while it makes me wonder if any of it was intentional, I have my doubts; even a broken clock can be right twice a day.
I want to analyze the parallels anyway.
While the Nogitsune’s line is meant to be interpreted as about Oliver, what if that’s a misdirect by a trickster? What if the line is about Stiles?
- The Nogitsune could be poking at Stiles’s Robin complex. [Edited to add: In hindsight, this is just a parallel between Stiles’s perception of himself and pop culture Renfield that I wanted to point out.] If every monster needs a stooge, and if Scott is the monster, then Stiles is nothing more than his obedient underling. This would hit at Stiles’s self-esteem, weakening his resolve and making it easier to get inside his head.
- Stiles is Renfield as a hinderance to Dracula’s plans. The Nogitsune had taken Stiles to mess up the power supply at the hospital, but then Stiles struggled against it and ended up at the coyote den on the coldest night of the year—the one place where Scott wouldn’t be able to track him by scent. It’s possible Stiles was trying to kill himself in order to prevent the Nogitsune from hurting anyone else. Stiles fought this elusive creature trying to get in… and he failed.
- Malia is Mina. In the novel, Renfield only meets Mina once, but she leaves a big enough impression on him that he changes his mind about wanting to serve Dracula. Similarly, Stiles has only just met Malia in her human form. And when Oliver goes to drill Stiles first, the Nogitsune redirects him to start with Malia. In a dramatic moment of selflessness, Stiles gives himself up to the Nogitsune to save Malia. Renfield’s desire to save Mina is used against him.
This all brings me back to how Dracula only “needed” Renfield as a means to an end. A doorway left ajar. The same way the Nogitsune needed Stiles, not as a slave but as a foothold. Someone with preexisting dark desires that it could then twist like a knife.
...And with the same hubris as Dracula, the Nogitsune would be undone by careful planning and the power of friendship.
Hi. Your posts show up on my dash and I think you have good and knowledgeable takes. What do we do when canon is inconsistent and contradictory? For example Winick!Jason vs Morrison!Jason pre new52? Like W!Jason says child sidekicks are dumb and shouldn't exist while M!Jason had him go get sidekick for himself. How should we reconcile this when discussing the characters? Thanks.
id say as a general point of reference that consistent, foundational character traits can persist regardless of bad comics. dick grayson is an example - in taylor's run he's written as a pretty idiot but in waid's worlds finest he's portrayed more accurately as a neurotic overachiever, and both runs were being published at the same time. it's about reading enough comics to be able to judge for urself what u want to keep and what u want to discard.
there's also broader metatexual reasons for why tangibly bad characterisation exists — winick and morrison mischaracterised and villianised talia al ghul in different ways to the detriment of her characterisation. talia's writing was a combination of bad writing and sexualised racism. similar issue w roy harper — his history with addiction is rewritten and his autonomy is undermined. it's always worth thinking about why a writer might interpret a character a certain way.
wrt to jason, he's an interesting case because unlike a lot of characters he has an actual, definitive comic thats the literal foundation for his existence in modern canon - under the red hood. jason's had the worst holistic writing by a considerable margin, and so people tend to discard his appearances depending on their taste (green arrow, batman and robin 2009, the recent gotham war arc, countdown, botc, etc) but utrh is his backstory and the context for his actions. winick's jason, through lost days and outsiders, feels like the same dude and is kinda the "base" version of the character. we also know what winick thought about morrison btw.
i actually don't think most of jason's actions pre-flashpoint are absurdly ooc, because he was conceptualised as a bad dude with hypocritical morals. theres a lot of dialogue around how bias has affected jason's writing historically but as red hood it feels like a believable radicalisation imo - winick's jason could be driven to hurt others. thats fine tbc because thats what makes him an interesting and complex character, but the issue is that no one was willing to commit to rehabilitating him into the bat-adjacent, generally heroic figure he's now recognised as. i personally think that him being chummy with the bats is a lot more egregious of a mischaracterisation than him blowing up a high school. there's no bridge between the jason that gloated when bludhaven got nuked and the jason that goes to batburger with the gang. i need more than the writer telling me that they like each other in a text box.
but again thats like. personal interpretation. every character with a book has comics that’re featured on every reading list, and then its a matter of ignoring or recontextualising the stuff u personally dont agree with. tis the nature of enduring canon. the picking and choosing.
RANDOM NOTES FOR TARGETS…
This is super late but I wanted to get it out before reading the final issue…
#4
ONE...
gar: why didn't she come to me?
cassie: c'mon gar. why do you think? you're her ex.
tim just awkwardly moves away from that subject: annnyway...
I always love a reference to the under-explored ill-fated romance of Cassie and Tim… rip WonderBird!
TWO...
its nice to see all the love ollie is getting whilst he's in his coma - in past seasons he's usually the one receiving all the criticism for the decisions he makes... in s1 he was the one to tell clone!roy about the watchtower, s2 original!roy hates him for not having saved him from lex/the light and there was the added guilt ollie felt for all the tragedies that seemed to have befallen those he was mentor to, then in s3 dinah was hating on him for going along with batman and resigning from the justice league. but now in this comic series weve seen cissie clearly care about him, lian, perdita, dinah - its all very nice to see.
THREE...
i had a random thought regarding the squad animal choices... raptor squad were in charge of observing and executing a targeted attack on Henchy - like a bird praying on its meal then flying down to strike. gorilla squad go straight into their attack - big and loud as a gorilla would if it needs to... also, I did a bit of googling on gorilla behaviour and it said they aren't actually as aggressive as they are often represented to be and unless they absolutely have to, they will make themselves look as threatening as possible by making a lot of noise to intimidate their enemy before actually attacking -- which is interesting, and made me think, you could say gorilla squads job is to make a lot of noise and direct the enemies toward them while mganns alpha squad sneak in undetected to find Perdita... I may be reaching with that interpretation and it might not actually make sense but that's just what came to my mind. then there's mongoose squad who are the backup team, quick, agile and the surprise cavalry you dont expect who pack a pretty heavy punch, the mongoose may be small and not look like much but they are capable of taking on a cobra and winning. (ill be honest this point made way more sense in my head and now ive written it down it does not.)
FOUR...
Match is back! i do really love how this show doesnt forget about things of previous seasons - like, in s4 when dick says bibbo got security cameras specifically in response to his abduction by the kroloteans back in s2 - they didnt need to give a reason for the cctv, but by having one it keeps everything tightly knit together and shows that nothings wasted - even with more minor characters... to me its the same with match being brought back here - any other show would have introduced match in s1 then forgotten about him and never bothered mentioning him again - but not yj - things might not get talked about constantly but that definitely doesn’t mean they’ve been forgotten… that’s why anything is possible with yj.
FIVE…
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE ARRIVAL OF MONGOOSE SQUAD! That whole two page spread is epic and looks amazing. It honestly gives off the same amount of energy as it would have had it been animated - when I first read these pages they got me so pumped for the rest - it gave me the same energy as the arrival of the heroes in Summit. It’s also great to see that all the outsiders are getting to play some part in this story - something that was obviously very lacking in s4 - I love seeing how everyone’s powers are translated into the printed format - massive kudos to Chris jones and Jason wright for crafting that - it’s so brilliant!!
Tumblr media
SIX…
The “call Brandon!” sticky note on Barbara’s fridge - do we know anyone called Brandon or is it just a nod to Brandon viette? My guess is the latter but I thought I’d still put it out there.
SEVEN…
Cassie vs Devastation - so cool… Cassie being face slammed against the floor by devastation - so not cool! Ouch dude - that has got to hurt!!!
Tumblr media
EIGHT…
I like how they show the broken comm signal as oracle tries to warn Conner about the kryptonite - it works really well at building the tension in conjunction with the imagery of match collapses atop of Conner… it certainly had me at the edge of my seat when I first read it.
NINE…
I’m gonna be honest, when I first saw metallo I thought it was another superboy clone situation but lex had crafted this one into a cyborg this time - he does kinda looks like Conner… it wasn’t until I read the next issue I realised he was someone else, then I realised he does actually say his name in #4 and he obviously wouldn’t be a Kryptonian clone because he’s literally fuelled by kryptonite… so yeah, in short I’m an idiot and I don’t know anything about metallo but he does look pretty cool.
Tumblr media
TEN…
I really love how they colour the memories, there’s this soft, almost fuzziness to them which really emphasises the fact that these are moments of the past being remembered in comparison to the main present day plot. It’s a nice touch.
ELEVEN…
Ollie really went through some injuries as he kept perdita safe - though he never once stops protecting her despite all the bumps and bruises and arrow impalements - it’s great seeing their bond grow as things keep escalating.
#5
TWELVE…
I really love that first page of perdita walking aimlessly through complete darkness demanding answers - it’s eerie and mysterious - I can totally imagine it animated and her words echoing in this hollow void. Love it.
Tumblr media
THIRTEEN…
Virgil being squad leader for Mongoose Squad is so cool - it’s about time we saw him properly in a leadership role where he’s actually respected instead of being the joke of the group because he can’t think of what to do next. Obviously we’re still not actually seeing him give specific strategical instructions here, as the goal is just pick an evil robots and take it down, but it still shows a lot of growth for him since s2. Back then he was always so eager to be a hero capable of taking charge and guiding others towards victory, the problem was that eagerness always got the better of him and prevented him from figuring out the strategies needed when under pressure. Though his moment of leadership in Illusion of Control proved he was certainly ready to take on that responsibility - he just needed confidence in his ability to believe that - it’s good to see he’s finally got that. You go Virgil!
Tumblr media
FOURTEEN…
I’m slightly concerned that robot just broke Bart’s back… I’m sure it didn’t and even if it did do some kind of damage, I’m sure Bart will probably just heal as he always does - but I’m still concerned about the boy! Also, I don’t know if it’s just a case of the narrative needing Bart out of the fight because he could potentially deal with a lot more than the plot wants him to, or if he’s just genuinely being clumsy, because he seems to be getting injured a lot recently. Bart you either need to pay more attention to your surroundings or just stay away from green things - they never do you any good!
FIFTEEN…
I’m gonna guess Shimmer melted Courtney’s staff is probably definitely not a good thing!
Tumblr media
SIXTEEN…
Well Luthor certainly did a number on mr Juan Cordero, didn’t he… I mean, JEEZ! Honestly, the more we see of these metas Luthors taken under his wing (manipulated) the more I’m like - thank goodness for roy getting kicked off the team and tagging along with the runaway’s that time because they seriously dodged a bullet by cutting ties with lex when they did… imagine the way things might have turned out had that not happened!
SEVENTEEN…
“When I found out I was a metahuman with self healing abilities I figured everyone would treat me like a total freak.” Dude, self healing is not a freakish power - it’s actually a pretty damn cool power - one that would only be known about if someone either saw you heal or if you told them about it - so if you’re issues with image then you’re pretty golden. it’s also not really something you can lose control of unless you’re purposely getting yourself into scraps and scrapes. It’s really not that bad… ya wanna know what definitely is freakish - BECOMING A FRICKIN ROBOT WITH ONLY YOUR FACE LEFT GRAFTED ONTO IT!! THATS INSANE!!
EIGHTEEN…
“Scarab, we are NOT nuking the building, and I am NOT having this conversation!” Blue arguing with scarab is always a joy to witness - I’ve missed that!
NINETEEN…
I see you looking over at perdita roy… now tell me what is the situation with these two - are they together or not?! There are vibes and I have wanted answers since the first issue!! GIVE THEM TO ME!!
Tumblr media
TWENTY…
I like how vertigo’s power is illustrated - the wobbly layers look really cool!
Tumblr media
TWENTY ONE…
Poor perdita, Will just drops her catatonic form on the floor so he can worship queen bee - where’s Ollie the human shield when ya need him… oh ye, he’s in a coma.
TWENTY TWO…
So, it is cool to see queen bee and her power finally being used to cause havoc with one of the teams and for it to not only be the boys who are affected by her but also Violet who is of course also attracted to women - that’s all cool… I’m just like - I really want queen bees powers to be used to reveal a character’s sexuality that hasn’t previously been made canon in the show - I just think it would make for a great moment… like with Ed and Bart, who were unjustly denied their s3 reveal (I will never not be over that!), I wanna see them not being affected by her power, or alternatively, any of the female characters that are speculated about by the fandom, like zatanna, Raquel, traci, it would be cool seeing any of them being affected. It would be a really simple way - especially for the more minor characters who aren’t able to get a lot of plot time, to reveal this kind of information to the audience without needing to say a word or spend much time on it… but that’s just my opinion.
TWENTY THREE…
And once again everyone is dead… well, 50% of everyone… I’m sure they’re not staying dead… they never do… unless their names are Wally, Tula or Tomar-Re… The question is how will things be reversed? Is it another martian mind trick or could halo heal them or something else entirely? Guess we will find out soon…
The one thing I’ll add about this situation is that they really need to consider pulling back on the fakeout deaths… unless they surprise us all by actually committing to the kills - which isn’t gonna happen - we’ve had a lot of death fakeouts recently and the more they happen the less effective the moments becomes… compare the emotional response of this moment to when Kaldur killed Artemis back in s2 - with the s2 moment theres shock, confusion, disbelief - nothing like it had happened before so you truly believed things were real, up until the truth was revealed and with it you’re still feeling a whole load of emotions… with this moment, other than the initial oh no that’s not good, I don’t really feel anything towards it because I don’t expect them to stay dead for long. And that’s all I’ll say about that.
Tumblr media
TWENTY FOUR…
Violets little bashful wave at queen bee is kinda adorable… while whatever Roy’s face is doing is definitely not!
TWENTY FIVE…
Ollie: that’s me. Always hogging the limelight.
Merlyn: ah yes. Lime. Green. So clever.
Ollie: wasn’t actually attempting a pun there, but whatever.
This moment should not be as funny as it is - but it is! I love it!
TWENTY SIX…
Perdita high-fiving Ollie after taking down Merlyn is a great moment! They’re so adorable together and I love seeing perdita being a happy/giddy 10 year old when she can be - her little face and excited jump for joy at Ollies proposal to Dinah is way too cute!!
Tumblr media
TWENTY SEVEN…
I am now very intrigued as to how long Ollie and Dinah have been engaged and if they ever actually got married - because if they have been married this whole time, then that makes ollies walking out with Batman in s3 very bloody awkward… I shouldn’t laugh, but there’s just something a little bit funny about Batman breaking up their marriage… I’m sure that didn’t happen… or at least I hope that didn’t happen… 😬
TWENTY EIGHT…
Some random prediction I guess for the final issue… they’ve established this engagement so I’d presume the wedding or some sort of celebration will take place to close out the final memory. I think Wally’s gonna show up somewhere - probably in the final memory - and considering this is all taking place on November 11th, which is Wallys birthday, I’m gonna say they’ll be some sort of anniversary gathering/acknowledgment of that fact. In terms of how the fight against the robot and queen bee is gonna conclude - I have no idea - same goes for how perditas gonna be saved… in all honesty, the only thing I’m truly hoping for is some confirmation on the relationship status of roy and perdita! (I don’t ask for much)
TWENTY NINE…
Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed Target and will be sad to see it end - here’s hoping for this not to be the final chapter! There is honestly so much story yet to be explored in this universe and I hope whoever at dc/WB realises it’s just as worth making as all the other stuff they’ve greenlit!
So I’m literally on my way to bed because I’ve been up for like two days cuz of work and I’m largely incoherent right now......
But trust me, I will have WORDS about the Nightwing #96 cover later.
Hoo boy, do I have ALL THE FUCKING WORDS about that, and the artist (Bruno Redondo)’s response to someone on twitter about it, and Taylor’s response to that response.
You wanna do a fucking Brady Bunch style cover for an issue about a family reunion?
Okay, cool, fine.
But when someone asks ‘hey where’s Duke Thomas’ - someone who LITERALLY is either a foster son of Bruce’s, or an official Wayne adoptee, writers have always been inconsistent as fuck about how they view his place in the Batfam - like, how are you going to respond “oh the cover just includes ‘core family’” when you’ve got Stephanie in one of the boxes, and also, the fucking DOG Taylor created for his run?
And also, on top of Duke not being there, because maybe you can say ‘well Dick and Duke haven’t even had the OPPORTUNITY to interact much since Duke’s creation, given Dick’s distance from the Batfam throughout the Grayson title, and then his couple years of amnesia’......
Like MAYBE you could sell that response, instead of the ‘core family’ cop-out, but then I’d still be asking, okay but WHERE’S CASS THEN?
Cuz she’s only in the BACKGROUND of Stephanie’s box, not even obvious on first glance. Treated as the afterthought there, instead of the clearly emphasized Stephanie. And unlike Dick and Duke, Dick and Cass most definitely DO have history.
And given how much of Taylor’s run has been straight up mimicking every major story or character beat of the 90s Nightwing comics, there’s no WAY that man isn’t aware of stories that feature a lot of Dick and Cass bonding, like Bruce Wayne/Murderer? and Bruce Wayne/Fugitive.....but didn’t prioritize Cass either, hmmm.
So if you’re going to make a Brady Bunch homage cover for an issue that’s about a Batfamily reunion, and you don’t include Duke and BARELY include Cass, but you include Stephanie and the freaking DOG in full display?
Not to mention, Damian’s blatantly whitewashed on that cover - and except for a throwaway acknowledgment of Dick’s Romani heritage in one panel at the start of Taylor’s run, which also made it explicitly clear that this current interpretation of Dick is absolutely supposed to be regarded as a character of color, not that the art or the story ever reflects that in any other way - its a painfully oblivious look to just so happen to sideline the only other two PoC in the entire damn Batfamily.
And look, I love Stephanie, you guys KNOW I do. But if you’re going to cite ‘core family’ as the basis of your Brady Bunch homage, there is ZERO reason for her to be on that cover in place of either Duke or Cass, let alone BOTH. Steph and Dick’s only real interactions stem from the period he was Batman and she was Batgirl, but outside of that, they don’t have any more history than he shares with either of the other two, and UNLIKE the other two, Dick and Stephanie have NEVER regarded each other as family in that way.
Stephanie is CLOSE with the Batfam, and makes sense to be included as part of the extended Batfam, same as Barbara, but she and Barbara have always been distinct from the other kids due to the fact that there has never been any point in time when the two of them have looked to Bruce as any kind of parental figure, or even WANTED to. Steph has her mom, Barbara has her dad. Even when both have admittedly had issues with their parent in the past, neither EVER looked to Bruce as either a replacement or even a SUPPLEMENTAL parent figure at those times either.
Stephanie is absolutely a close FRIEND of the family, a very very close one, and good one, and Barbara of course is Dick’s girlfriend or at least love interest in Taylor’s run, but aside from that, but neither of them have ever been connected to Dick in the same way that both Duke and Cass are.....in that particular way that could be described as, oh idk....’core family.’
So if you’re going to cite that as your reason for your choices to include in the eight slots on the cover, and you’re going to have the writer, Taylor, ‘weigh in’ on the criticism of those choices (especially as I’m fairly certain that as the writer of that issue, HE picked which characters were meant to be included there, but I can’t be sure about that) but if Taylor’s response is going to be to mock the person asking ‘where’s Duke’ by listing off a whole bunch of other supporting Batfam cast, say shit like ‘why do you hate Ace the Bathound, Bruno’.....
Then you should be embarrassed as fuck to have decided that cover really needed to have Dick’s PET in place of BOTH Duke AND Cass.
Like really, if they’d just left off Bite-wing and Steph, they’d have had room for both Duke and Cass, and there would have been NO issue. Or even just switch Steph’s box around so its Cass in the foreground there and Steph peeking out behind her. And both Duke and Cass are literal adoptees or fostered by Bruce, so they INARGUABLY fit the bill of ‘core family,’ even if people happened to ask ‘where’s Steph’ in that case. Which tbh, I don’t think anyone really would have done, because it would have been OBVIOUS why she wasn’t included in one of the eight spaces available, given the other inclusions, and again, Dick and Steph have never been close enough that her inclusion would have been some kind of glaring omission, and unlike with Duke and Dick, where their lack of much interaction aside from Robin War is largely logistical, given Dick’s been infamously unavailable for like, five of the seven or so years Duke’s existed....Steph and Dick’s lack of frequent interaction spans a good two decades.
In conclusion, apparently I did have the words already anyway, and I haven’t been a fan of Taylor’s from the start obviously, but doing a family reunion issue and a Brady Bunch homage for a cover, and choosing to include or emphasize Steph and Dick’s pet of less than a year, that Taylor himself created, over Duke and Cass - again, the literal ONLY other two characters of color in Dick’s entire family, aside from the blatantly whitewashed Damian -
And your first instinct is to mock people asking hey where’s one of the other two people who absolutely have reason to be counted among Dick’s core family?
*claps hands slowly*
Bravo, Taylor. Bra - fucking - vo.
You’ve outdone yourself once again, I see.
And now I’m going the fuck to sleep.
I want a comic where Jason switches place with a Jason from another universe that got adopted by a middle class family and not Bruce/Batman. In that universe, Jason got to live a mundane life. He graduated high school, went to college, he has a group of friends, he is in a long term serious relationship. Our Jason gets to see and live in that world for atleast a month and have to figure out living a mundane life. In that world he is a student teacher or even already a teacher (I picture kindergarten/grade 1). In that world he has a nice sized group of friends he hangs out regularly with and a long term romantic partner. Jason learns how he met several of these people in this world. Meanwhile mundane Jason, is having to deal with the superhero world that he doesn’t have training for, this Jason is more light hearted and softer in nature. I would want a scene where a batfam member. (I am picturing either Dick or Stephanie) finds this Jason looking over files and information, this Jason looks at them and says that when the switch back happens his counter part will be hurting.
When the switch back happens Jason gets back into gear but is found later looking at the same files the mundane by the same batfam member and he asks if he did a lot of good as Robin and as Red Hood and says he knows he did unforgivable things but the good was it worth it and the other batfam member  says “yes you did good, a lot of good and all that was done was worth it.” Now you can interpret that as either a truth or a comfort lie. But either way it ends with Jason nodding his head and says he has things to do, turns off the bat computer and walks away from it with shaking hands and when alone cries before brushing them away and goes out on patrol as the end. Then you get to read the files and every person Jason met in that world, the ones he was close to, you find out they are all dead and how they died. All of the deaths could have not happened and they died in ways that Jason couldn’t go on a vengeance quest if he wanted to. Basically Jason finding out him becoming Robin, dying, coming back and becoming Red Hood is his dark time line.
Also through out this whole thing I would want Mundane Jason refusing to call Tim by his real name and calling him Frank. So when Jason switches back Tim almost doesn’t answer by his real name and thankful he isn’t called Frank anymore. I have a reason in my head for this and yes it is very stupid.
Hey this isn’t meant to be confrontational or any kind of critique or anything, just a truly genuine question out of curiousity and what not. With works like finish line, where it’s a complete au of the Batman, but the whole Something Happened to Jason thing is included, do you ever worry about balancing the risk of like victim blaming in a sense? Like I do think there’s this unfortunate idea of Jason being to blame for his death, which we’ve scene parroted in canon even at times by certain characters, but also an unfortunate number of fans themselves seem to think Jason was reckless or impulsive or did something to make his death happen, rather than dying as a hero Child protecting his mother (as he finally argues in print in task force Z). But like in finish lines it’s written that he sort of disobeyed Bruce and Dick, ignored their warnings, and acted in a manner that could be seen as reckless or impulsive solely for the thrill of it, which sort of toes that line? Again, not a critique, sort of more of a writing question to balance for my own ideas. Like is that smthn you are concerned about and try to balance, is it less of a concern, is it not a concern with au works?
I honestly don't think I've ever intentionally thought of Jason's death in this way when writing. Probably because I don't see his canon death as his fault and I write out of that mindset. He was a child who was betrayed and failed by multiple adults, in simplest terms. And I think in my fantasy AU, his death has similar beats. He, a child, tried to save someone but it turns out to be a trap.
I think context matters for Finish Line because Jason was a successful driver in the middle of a race. So while his coaches are giving advice, he's in a high stakes situation where he ultimately has to make a judgment call based on his own ability and experience. It's probably not the first time he went against their advice and likely succeeded in other circumstances. At the end of the day, he is the driver. Yes, he stated that he wanted to push his limits, but I think it's less for thrill and more because he genuinely believed he could make it past this other driver crowding him. Either way he made a split second call with the information he had. And most importantly to me, his family doesn't blame him or Duke for their crashes and instead rally around them. Of course, this is all informed by my point of view which is that Jason isn't at fault for his canon death.
I think AUs are fun because you can try different things. With Finish Lines I was more concerned with the impact the crash had on Jason so it ended up unintentionally toeing the line depending on the reader's interpretation. I think that's okay since AUs explore an alternate world and altered relationships. For your writing, Anon, it really depends on what you want to come across. Do you want the reader to have room for interpretation? Do you want them to leave with a firm understanding of Jason's role in his death? If it's important to you and the story you're telling then it's okay to pay more attention to balancing that or making it clear to the reader. And most importantly, write what you enjoy and what makes you happy!
