"You can sleep in the spare room, in here."
Tumblr media
"It's nice," said Rhonda.
"Lot of memories in this room. But the sheets are clean."
"Great, thanks," Rhonda chuckled.
"So, I'll drive you to the train station in the morning. I'm usually up at four so I'll be ready whenever you are."
Tumblr media
"Hey, wait--" Rhonda grabbed John's hands. "Where are you sleeping?"
"In my room, upstairs."
"Your parents' old room, you mean?"
"Yeah, but it's been mine since--"
"Since your wife died there. You still feel close to her there."
"Yeah," he whispered.
"I understand. Lots of memories, right?"
"Right. I'll see you in the morning. Oh, and there's clean PJs in the closet."

Isabella Macdonald (née Clark; 1809 – 28 December 1857) was the first wife of John A. Macdonald, one of the fathers of the Canadian federation, and ultimately the first Prime Minister of Canada. After marrying Macdonald in Kingston, Ontario in 1843, she enjoyed two years of happy marriage before falling seriously ill. Her first son died at 13 months but her second son, Hugh John Macdonald, became Premier of Manitoba. Despite some better spells, she died aged 48, never recovering from her illness.

Note
btw ive never went to read too much about eliza, almost all I know about her is from the musical (i know), so, having curiosity sparkled by your post talking about how people see her as an idiot person, can you tell me some things about her? thank you!
Sure!
Elizabeth was affectionately nicknamed “Betsey” by Hamilton.
And she was not a self-pittier. Elizabeth dealt with many deaths of loved ones throughout her life. March 1801, Elizabeth lost her sister, Margaret Schuyler (Or more well-known as; Peggy), after a long course of ailment. And her brother, John, too. Her eldest son, Philip Hamilton, died that November in a reckless duel, which was a deep cut into the family emotionally. Her mother also having died. And then, Hamilton himself followed just three years later, in his own duel against his political rival, Aaron Burr. Having fallen into the deep and harsh financial straits, Elizabeth then experienced her father's death in November 1804. With barely little, she had to utilize anything and everything to keep her remaining family afloat. A slight inheritance from Philip Schuyler helped with that, as did the private raising of money from Hamilton's friends that enabled Elizabeth to stay in the house she and Hamilton had shared for a few more years.
She was also a excellent and devoted mother! She was always mainly staying at home with the children while Hamilton would travel for work. But even after her husband's death, with her still relatively young children; Elizabeth kept the family together and well. She continued to raise Little Phil (Philip Hamilton II) and Eliza Hamilton Holly by herself, with, of course, the hell of her sons.
She even still took great care of their mentally ill daughter, Angelica Hamilton, who suffered from a mental breakdown from the shock of her eldest brother's death and mentally regressed into a “delusional” or “child-like state”. Elizabeth stayed with her for years, until she would grow too old to properly care for her, Angelica was eventually placed in the care of a Dr. MacDonald of Flushing, Queens, where she remained for the rest of her life. But even in her will, she begged her children to be kind and considerate to Angelica.
Elizabeth would even travel days to go and see William Stephen Hamilton, who had moved half across the country, just to visit him.
In 1798, Elizabeth had accepted her friend's, Isabella Graham, invitation to join the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children, which had been established the previous year.
Two years after her husband's death, in 1806, Elizabeth — along with many other women including — founded the Orphan Asylum Society. ESH was appointed second directress. (Or vice-president) In 1821, she was named first directress, and served for 27 years in this role. Elizabeth raised many funds, collected needed goods, and oversaw the care and education of over 700 children. Until she had to resign, having left New York in 1848.
Elizabeth, alongside her two sons, James Alexander, and John Church, defended AH's against his posthumous critiques in several of ways, including by supporting his claim of authorship of George Washington's Farewell Address, and by requesting an apology from James Monroe over his accusations of financial improprieties. As well as her son's raising funds to try and have monuments constructed for their father's legacy. Elizabeth even petitioned Congress to publish her husband's writings in 1846. Elizabeth would continue to be dedicated to preserving her husband's legacy, which is considerable when his legacy had nearly be swept down the drain due to the popular disliking towards him after his passing. She sorted through all of Hamilton's letters, papers, articles, and writings, with the assistance of her son, John Church. And remained assisting, sven through many setbacks in getting John's biography getting published. With his mother's help, JCH would go on to publish History of the Republic of the United States America, and would set the bar or reference use for future biographies of Alexander Hamilton, that would grow as time went on. The writings that nearly every historian have today by Hamilton, can be attributed to efforts from Elizabeth. As in the June, of 1848, Elizabeth was in her nineties, she made an effort for Congress to buy and publish her late husband's works. Then in the following August, her request was granted and Congress bought and published Alexander's works, adding them to the Library of Congress and helping future historians of Hamilton have access to his works today.
She adored and felt attached to Hamilton's writings so much so; that she wore a small package around her neck containing the pieces of a sonnet that Hamilton had wrote for her during their courtship. At some point during that winter of 1780, he had written her a love sonnet. Unfortunately, it's unknown where the romantic poem now remains. But, Allan McLane Hamilton, the grandson of Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton — and the son of their youngest child Phil II — had it in his possession, amongst many other family papers, in the early 20th century.
In his biography of his grandfather, The Intimate Life of Alexander Hamilton, he described the immense significance of the poem to Elizabeth;
“Few letters remain which enable us to mark the advance of Alexander’s wooing, but a little verse is in my possession which was found in a tiny bag hanging from his wife’s neck after her death, and which she had evidently always worn, and it was quite probably given to her when they were together this winter [1779-1780]. What is apparently a sonnet was written upon a piece of torn and yellow paper, fragments of which had been sewn together with ordinary thread.”

Hope this helps!

Carl took a quick look at himself before getting dressed. He was happy! Life with Lydia was just what he needed to process Isabella's passing. Any moral implications about their relationship left his body entirely; he was convinced Lydia was sent to him from above, and he had no doubt that she would stay with him until he was to reunite with Isabella.

Book: Secrets of A Highlander's Heart

Scotland
The Past -1460
The Present - 1475
It starts with Laird Sir Gilbert Stewart, Lord of Lorn, his wife Isabella and their three young children Ross. Graeme and Mags. I loved the interaction with the children who were ages five, three and two. Also the relationship with the loving parents. I did enjoy going through two timelines which were set in 1460 at the Stewart clan castle Dunstaffnage but it also shows that a best friend is about to betray him for money and lands. A definite nail biter without giving much away.
It also goes to present time in 1475 where Grace MacDonald is traveling with the man her father who was Lord of the Isle who wants her to marry childhood friend Errol MacLaren for a political alliance. Even though her father had promised his wife on her deathbed he would allow their two daughters to make love matches. Grace just does not feel the spark plus Errol doesn’t seem to respect her opinion and treats her more like possession than an equal. Then she meets Brus Stone, a beautiful man that saves her life. Not only that but he seems to respect her and value her opinion. Except he feels she is above his station . Brus is part of the Northern Watch, a group of warriors to put a halt to fighting, stealing and ravaging to protect Scotland but they also must sign an oath to never marry and have children and stay with the Northern Warriors forever unless they get a signed release from the King of Scotland.
When Brus and Grace meet they are like a moth to a flame but he has a lot of trust issues due to his past. He seems to send her mixed signals, as he was told his mother had abandoned him. He also feels she is a Laird's daughter and he believes he was illegitimate and not good enough for her. Except Grace notices Brus has very courtly manors in the way he carries himself and she questions where he learned it from. Then the ultimate betrayal happens and it seems Brus and Grace are on opposite sides. It is obvious they both care deeply for each other but the past might come back to haunt them. Do they even have a future or will Grace hate Brus for the choices he must make? On top of that Grace must make a difficult decision that will definitely hurt one of the men in her life.
This extraordinary book is my most favorite book I ever read by Julie Johnstone that definitely checked all the boxes for me. I thought the swoon worthy hero and feisty heroine were absolutely perfect for each other! It was an emotional read that will definitely pull on the heart strings and I can't recommend it enough. What a great start to this phenomenal new series. I can't wait for the next book and it is definitely a story readers don’t want to miss!

First Happy Queer Show Recommendation
First Day (2020 - 2022)
2 seasons (8 episodes)
Available on Hulu
Tumblr media
Country: Australia
Age/Intended Audience: All ages (personal opinion)
Genre: Drama (A bit of romance 🥹)
Synopsis:
Hannah Bradford, a 12-year-old transgender girl, begins her first year of middle school while trying to live as her authentic self. (Google)
Review/Rant (Spoilers Below):
In depth spoilers will be marked.
Cw/tw: bullying, ignorance, transphobia
First day is one of the best children's show about a trans girl starting her first day of high school.
If you have a few hours and are ready to binge something to laugh, cry, and be hopeful for I recommend this show!
I've been looking for good teen shows to watch (I'm a future screenwriter so need to know what the kids are up to)
Tumblr media
and I just genuinely enjoy a good story.
I happened to accidentally find First Day, a short miniseries from Australia (they're doing great outside the us fr) and let me tell you it's so amazing!
It stars an actual trans actress who is transferring schools and her journey in feeling at home with herself, her new school, and new friends (and finally wearing a girls uniform 🥹).
That statement may be a lil controversial but coming from a girl who now knows she's ace going to a queer gathering her first week in college (by accident 🤣) but having the most wonderful time and being absolutely comfortable in the setting after living in a stereotypically homophobic country I can see the benefits of it.
It also deals with her romance in the second season (which friends to lovers supremacy) and learning about how important it can be to have safe spaces.
Safe space supremacy! (/hj)
Tumblr media
In Depth Spoilers!!
Below
|
|
|
The principal assures her that she's going to have all the support she needs as the teachers will be having a training of sorts about transgender students.
In season one, we meet Hannah Bradford, a 13 year old girl on her last day of school getting admitted to her new high school.
She's excited but unfortunately she is denied use of the girls toilets and is given permission to use the gender neutral sick bay bathroom. (Yuck!)
(For Americans this means the nurses bathroom/j)
This sends her into a bit of a spiral as she's terrified of the conclusions people will naturally make as curious teens.
Why doesn't she use it bathrooms? Or is always sick?
Then they will obviously try to find out why.
Now before I go any further I have to give props to Hannah's actress, Evie MacDonald who is an absolute gem!
Her emotional performance in season one is captivating and her hormonal angry teen portrayal in season 2 is also very well done (🤣 but seriously she does have a right to be in season 2).
But before she can be finally free to enjoy her summer her mom sends her back for one last day of pretending to be a boy. 😔
Despite this her mom (Joanne Hunt, who's an absolute gem and also gets a shout-out) helps her find excuses to give to nosy kids.
Honestly as a writer I admire the way that they give you small tidbits of information about her journey and what's normal for them.
For example, they talk about how she'd dress up as a kid in stores, how her mom would help her make excuses for situations, and rules established to keep her safe (only can go over to girls houses whose family knows she's trans).
Here we meet Isabella, her bully for the rest of the show who occasionally pops in and out.
She deadnames her (yuck 🤢) and Hannah luckily escapes her.
Then the day ends and we begin to prepare for our first day!
We see her holiday, getting cute presents, get her uniform for this first time 🥹 and then finally it's her first day!
She's very nervous about it because she thinks people can tell but she just looks like any other girl.
Here she's approached by Olivia (best girl!) who practically adopts her as a friend immediately.
Her and Olivia hit it off immediately and she introduces her to her friends she's had since middle school Natalie and Jasmine (also called Jazzie).
(pictured below in order Olivia, Hannah, Natalie, Jazzie)
Tumblr media
These four become a fearsome group of besties hanging out and getting along.
Olivia is the late friend, who is bold and stands up for her friends.
Natalie has a bit of a loose cannon mouth being blunt, but its always never meant to be malicious she just states what she sees.
And Jazzie is the closest to her in terms of them both having the same homeroom. Jazzie is a known party girl.
Tumblr media
As time goes by and Hannah settles in you get to see her come out of her shell and participate more in classes and get to be just Hannah and not the "trans kid".
Unfortunately this is based in real life and yes life can be happy but there's also gotta be balance.
Olivia her bully transfers to the school but seems to be getting counselling. She does stop calling Hannah by her deadname though (albeit threateningly progress?).
During all of this Jazzie is having a party and even better she's having a sleepover party.
But, unfortunately for Hannah who's gotten used to being one of the girls and not treated any differently (minus the sick bay bathroom) her mom is adamant about not letting her stay over at by herself.
This rule is in place for all families who dont know she's trans and honestly i understand and completely agree.
She says it's for her safety and honestly I'd do the same thing.
Imagine if someone found out during, some people can be transphobic and throw her out, berate her, make her feel less than. They can out her on display or even worse.
I understand the fear behind sleepovers in general so that added layer makes me even more terrified.
You may not have heard of this case but a black woman went to one and never came back alive and the killer who was there still hasn't been convicted. Sadly there's many cases like this.
But Hannah is a kid. And kid's dont think that far. I didn't either as a kid. I was like fun!
So she tries to pull one over the day of with her mom but she's like ha. Either you go or you don't.
Upset she goes to just the party and tells her friends. They're all sad but understanding and tell her they'll just enjoy the party together.
Here Olivia reveals to Hannah her fears about sleeping in an unfamiliar place (which valid) and Hannah is comforted then they go party.
I personally think this is where Hannah finds her to be a safe space and person to tell.
Throughout the episodes it's alluded that Billy, a boy in their class has a crush on her and he's the most adorable awkard mess ever at this party.
Hannah is kind of indifferent and friendly but he's trying so hard and he's like this for 2 seasons -
Tumblr media
(dis tew cuteeee)
So eventually after the party she decided to tell Olivia who asks some ignorantly hurtful questions but once she understands then she's like okay. Wanna check out this video?
And I love the normalcy of it. Like it shows how much this world can be a safer place for everyone to be included.
Billy is also shown as this and his friend group still teases him about his crush on her and continues to push him to talk to her. (which gives me hope for the kids 🥹) It also subtlety shows how his friends are also respectful of her identity and funny treat her any different.
As a black person from a colonized country I wish for the day where there's an understanding of the importance of education of diversity and integration of many different lifestyles outside of the "norm".
If they not hurting anybody leave them babies alone!!
Back to the recap/review, Olivia loudly asks about sick bay toilets and it seems like someone overhears.
Then a post is sent out.
Now who did it you may ask?
Her bully who's transferred, Olivia who loudly talked, and the bully who overheard?
Well you gotta watch to find out 😉.
In season 2 the group looks like this so you can probably infer what happened.
Tumblr media
Season 2 is the first time Hannah has gone back to school as a girl, not pretending and sure of her self. She's just Hannah.
She has friends, a school community that cares about her and access to the girls toilets! Yayyy!
This seaon deals with gender, safe spaces/clubs for queer teens, and dating.
We also get a bit of understanding of struggles that each group can face such as Olivia being Asian and Hannah being trans.
I also love how they handled friendships and how its a relationship that's to be cared for as well.
Hannah accidentally isolates her friends as she believes they won't understand her struggles and seeks others like her (LGBTQIA+) but doesn't even give them the option to listen.
This seaon I think is so well done and they styling is amazing!
Tumblr media
Hannah also grows as she gets over her fear of speaking up for herself literally as she was afraid if speaking in front.
This season also talks about how trans as a label can be used as being "special" in terms of rights.
Like saying oh cause she's trans she gets -( insert absurd assumption and minus her everyday struggle).
We also have male trans rep with Josh, who hadn't fully transitioned in the first season so he was with the girls and also trans solidarity. 🥹
Hannah fights for her and other people's rights this season and to this I give her an honarary dap of respect.
Tumblr media
Also this scene was hilarious and I never noticed but the girl in front pointing at the bully took me out when I realized why she got caught.
(All the phobes call em out! 💃🏾🎵)
But Season 2 was a delight to watch and much happier.
But this post took a while as I had to rewatch the show and format it.
Also if you want more there's a whole Internet archive of cool behind the scenes stuff and the original short film it was based on! I'd check it out!
I hope you enjoy this show as much as i do and spread the joy and give me your thoughts about it!
Thank you and I appreciate you being on earth as you're lovely and worthy of being here.
Byee!!!!
- L 😘
