Through Shadows To The Edge Of Night (3)

Here we goooo! Final chapter of "Through Shadows" is out, one day earlier than planned! 🧡 I'm super excited, it was so much fun to write! It's over 6,600 words too!! Twice as long as my usual chapters, which I didn't expect initially, but during the editing process I chose to merge the ending dialogue with another one that I had written for a later chapter, as I found it made more sense.

I'm glad that Tav and Rolan are finally having more interaction... and a little misunderstanding I was craving to write since the beginning, including that *one* scene that I imagined all those months ago and made me want to write this fic 😏

I hope you'll like it! The next part of the series will finally bring us to Baldur's Gate and to Sorcerous Sundries, and well, who knows what will happen then 👀 I'm planning to release it on next Saturday. She took a step towards him.

“Rolan?”

This broke him out of his stupor, his eyebrows perking up, frowning, and finally coming closer. Had he always been this tall?

“Tav,” he replied sternly.

Her name rolled off his tongue with ease, and something surged within her; wishing that he’d say it more often, whisper it against her skin, his lips caressing the shell of her ears— Wait, what? No! She had done so much for him, against her better judgement even, and he had been nothing but rude and a pain in the ass. No: she wouldn’t be so easily swayed. The ball was in his court, and her expectations were high. She wouldn’t be distracted by nonsense.

She crossed her arms, unimpressed, trying to appear as nonchalant as possible.

“You brought them back,” he said finally, his eyes finding hers, a hint of hesitation colouring his deep voice. Once again, she found herself hypnotised by the golden flames dancing against the moonless sky of his eyes. “I thought my entire family was dead, and you… you brought us back together.” His voice was soft, almost emotional. She didn’t even know he could speak like this.

“Don’t mention it,” she croaked out. What was wrong with her? Gods, she needed to get a grip, now.

“You have no cause to be humble. You did the impossible and you went out of your way to help us when most people would’ve left us to die - or worse.”

Maybe she liked it better when he yelled at her, after all. At least it didn’t make her heart beat so fast.

There was a pause, but before she could speak, he continued.

“I’ve lashed out at you, drunkenly and otherwise, and you helped anyway.” She fought back a smile, biting the inside of her cheeks to physically stop her lips from stretching. “You didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry. And, thank you.”

Was this real? Was this really happening? She tilted her head up at him and wished that she didn’t imagine his own gaze flickering to her lips.

“Why are you being nice?” she asked in a hushed voice.

“Because you were. I still don’t quite understand why you decided to help us - to help me, but you did.” He seemed to remember something, and handed her a small purse. “It’s only right that you get something in return.”

A bag of gold sat in the palm of his hand, heavy and full. She paled, suddenly ill at ease. Was he giving her his savings?

“Rolan, no. I can’t accept it.” It was absurd. Actually, it was offensive.

His eyes darkened.

“No? Is that not good enough for you?”

“On the contrary, it’s way too much. Really, I… I don’t need gold. I don’t, I swear.”

She didn’t know how to explain to him that the sum he was handing her was probably less than her weekly allowance as a teen.

Not that she was the kind of selfless person who refused to be paid for her services. Quite the opposite, actually: half her life so far had been dedicated to finding ways of getting and spending money, without any concern in the world for those who didn’t have any.

But, well. Being catapulted in the middle of a refugee camp without any gold piece to spare had somewhat altered her perspective, and now she did feel bad about taking money from people in need when she knew her own coffers were still overflowing at home.

“I don’t need a reward,” she continued. “You keep it, for you, and Lia and Cal, for when—”

“Take it, Tav.” He cut her, annoyance sharp in his voice. Clearly, he would obviously feel beyond insulted if she refused it, but at the same time, she really didn’t need it. Although, it could benefit the group, if only temporarily…

She chewed on her bottom lip, indecisive, before reluctantly taking the coin purse from him, swearing to herself that she’d find a way to give it back somehow. Her obedience seemed to please him, and he gave her a satisfied smirk that ignited a fire in her belly, a violent desire coursing through her veins.

She wanted to know how his lips would feel against hers, how his body would react to her touch; to see pleasure etched over his handsome features and to hear him say all those nice things again, and then some. To see him happy, pleased; to make him lose his composure and show him how good it would feel to not be a stuck-up prick.

She wanted to kiss him - she really did.

And she wanted it now, even if he hated her.

She had dealt with worse than that.

“I didn’t tell Cal and Lia about what happened,” she said instead, inching just a bit closer, batting her eyelashes just so - giving him that one sultry look that always got her tangled in bedsheets under an hour.

“I know,” he said with a strained smile.

“You’re welcome,” she teased.

He let out a breathy laugh.

“I thanked you once already. Don’t be greedy.”

A glint of mischief burned in his eyes and she felt herself smirk, the flames of desire burning brighter. Oh, she was greedy alright - all she needed was a sign that he wasn’t just being polite, something, anything to let her know that he was also curious about her, and she would show him exactly just how greedy she could be.

Hiii. I love your acc and the analyses you've made of TVC characters; reading your posts has expanded and helped me articulate the ideas I already had. Anne Rice as an author was very revealing, I mean, by reading her books and analyzing the characters and their dynamics, you get a lot of information about her as a person. That's very interesting. I think all authors put a bit of themselves into their works, but with Anne Rice it feels more personal, maybe because there are quite a few books following the same characters. What do you think?

omg thank you so much 🥹❤️ the makes me so happy. I agree wholeheartedly with ur take on Anne rice. The books are suuuper personal, sometimes to the point where I almost feel like I shouldn’t have access to them 😭 like I’m reading someone’s weird diary. I think this was because her writing functioned as her only outlet. like iwtv was so visceral and sad bcus it was such a raw unfiltered expression of her grief, and the rest of the books all follow the same format (to varying degrees of quality lol).

When it comes to the characters, she was open about how every character is in some way representative of a part of her (especially Lestat and Louis). U can analyze for days how Louis and lestats evolutions r akin to witnessing evolutions of Anne rices mental health, Louis her former self insert created during probably the darkest time in her life later becoming a representation of what she considers the worst parts of herself that she is ashamed of and being basically cut from the series, and Lestat going from an embodiment of her fraught relationship with her husband in iwtv to in tvl a power fantasy who she wishes she was like to at the same time a mouth piece for her existential dread and loneliness and anxieties

The way that lestats religious crisis and manic breakdown from Memnoch to blood canticle aligns perfectly with Anne rice’s own religious crisis and sudden shift in her work is so crazy to me😭 and then there’s Anne rice literally using Lestat as a blatant mouth piece to scream at the audience in the iconic blood canticle opening monologue of course, how could we forget. A lot of the time the personal nature of these books makes the technical quality of them worse, but even still it is one of the major reasons why I love them so much. Part of it is that reading something so personal and unfiltered, where u get the impression that the author wasn’t thinking at all about how it would come off to people while writing it, makes it feel almost more real to me? Or more authentic? Reading tvc sometimes makes me feel like I’m reading actual history or personal accounts from real people. And the bad writing and offensiveness and heaps of bullshit and the pages of unrelated tangents adds to this in a way 😭. Like yeah this is exactly what reading a biography by a hundreds of years old vampire would be like lmao.

I love interpreting themes in these books so much because I often feel like Anne rice didn’t place them there on purpose. She had a very “I’ll just write whatever is in my mind and the themes will happen on there own” approach, and they did! and for someone like me analyzing it is super rewarding. Figuring stuff out that the author wasn’t even aware of, basically. Tvc are rich with meaning in a way that only these books are, and the personal nature and the lack of thought into meaning or themes is I think majorly responsible. For me when it comes to fiction, I like to do the work. And Anne rice throwing her personal as hell freak sex vampire yaoi with the most agonizing portrayals of trauma and mental illness ever no editing no forethought out into the world definitely gives me room to do the work 😭

Also, I tend to really only enjoy art if I feel like it is a messy reflection of the creator. I’m not sure why but I can never really get into something unless I can see some of the creators flaws or baggage reflected in the work 😭 I feel like art isn’t rlly art to me if I don’t feel like a know the person who made it a little too well after seeing it. There’s something really special about finding out the worst parts of someone in a book, honestly. I love reading these and being like there is so much wrong with this woman and I know way too much about it 😭 she’s horrible but I’ve lived in her mind and I don’t wanna leave.

I admire in a way Anne rices unhinged abandon with how blatantly vent-like and unfiltered her books were (literally unedited 😭). She got extremely lucky making a career from it, typing out all her insane thoughts and feelings into gay vampires and becoming rich and famous. A girl can only dream for that life, I do that shit for free on a03. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered anything published that has the same energy as tvc in this way. The only thing that comes close would be like, a quotev fan fiction I read for laughs written by a ten year old in 2010 who is unintentionally revealing way too much to me about their semi concerning home life 😭. It’s wonderful! Thank u Anne rice for ur beautiful scary lack of shame u have given me so many things to write about on tumblr

Here’s the first artwork of my Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita) ship released on this profile. I really need to redesign my #ocs old design and see through that I make a proper sheet with a proper reference. Anyways, I’m waiting for the release of the next instalment of the #battleangelalita Mars Chronicle and to satisfy my needs during the wait, I present to you the first picture of what is going to help me to survive the wait!

Ratte is my #owncharacter . She is Zekka’s actual child, although, Zekka ran away to get some smokes and ditch the responsibility when a girl suddenly carried his genes! Ratte wanted to know her father though, so when she found him, he told her that he’d only take care of her, if she would beat him in a fight. Of course, Ratte was but a kid in a cyborg-body. She had no chance against the strongest fist in the universe! However, Zekka was so impressed by the gall this girl had, that he began to teach her martial arts. Fast forward to the Z.O.T is when Ratte had become an adult, a formidable fighter and one of the allies of the Space Angels later on, opposing her own father this way.

❤️ Ratte: German for “Rat” // Built 5 years ago, equaling humanoid age of 20 years currently.

👾 Ratte is the dishonourable daughter of the great and famous Zekka, the strongest fist in the universe. She was born a cyborg, an accident that shouldn’t have happened and naturally so, Zekka ditched all responsibilities in this very drunken incident, leaving the "alledged mother/creator" of the child, getting a pack of smokes, never returning again. Ratte’s mother was very ill, taken by a cybernetic virus; she died shortly after the “birth” of the child, hence Ratte “grew up” in the ranks of the Stellar Nursery Society - Guntroll.

💀Only one year after she was built, she changed from a children’s cyborg body to an adult one. The girl never truly had been a child, nor did she ever have the mentality of one. Basically, you could say she was born as an “adult” (mentally). It was Yani, the Cybertech, who eventually built her new body, therefore, Ratte is a secret fizziroy-body-user. Qu Tsang taught her some of her martial arts, however, it was obvious that this fighting style wasn’t for her. Eventually she studied Capoeira, mixing it with influences of Wing-Chun and some secrets of the Panzerkunst, to form her very own, personal fighting style.

🤖Shortly before the Z.O.T Zekka and Ratte met once again and their first meeting wasn’t a pleasant one. Ratte had every reason to be mad at her “so-called father” hence an immediate fight occurred, which Ratte unfortunately lost. However, Zekka had to admit that the girl had some gall and after “somewhat” sorting things out, Zekka taught her some of his techniques as well, being a proper dad for the first time. During the Z.O.T Ratte allied with the Space Angels and the Guntroll team, opposing her father once more, rooting for Sechs to kick his stupid ass!

I guess I have because I had it liked before xD Yes, it's so reassuring knowing that great authors don't write like 2k words every day or that they let themselves just write a few words or none at all. And tbh I prefer to write 100 of good words instead of 1k of total nonsense that I will delete later. (I'm not talking about the chaotic notes that often can unclog your brain - those are absolutely the best but when it's about the actual text I prefer it to make sense and be usable for the future edits.)

One day at a time

How do I feel? Foggy 😶‍🌫️, spacey, a little low ⬇️, lethargic, full of love for my people

Causes? Nothing obvious from yesterday, just mentally ill and burned out.

How should I treat myself? with grace, be slow, be careful with your energy. You were hoping today would be an, active ‘doer’ day but if it’s not that’s okay.

What leave goal-work/to-dos would be reasonable?

✔️Mental - Rest and recovery. Try to get a meditation 🧘‍♀️ in today. *

✔️Career - Keep plugging away on report cards as able. Don’t hurt yourself but the sooner they are done, the sooner you can focus on yourself ❤️ *

✔️Physical - Let’s prioritize a walk today.

Exercise only if the above 👆 is done and only if it feels okay. Try cardio, but if too hard switch to yoga.

✔️Don’t worry about dinner and cooking today. Simple tuna melts could be the ticket. Or hubby could pick something up.

Yes, you’re concerned you’re not doing the CBT you need to do (but hey! This is it too). But those report cards need your mental energy first. Sadly. If you weren’t doing them the guilt of putting them on your team would be worse.

You CAN’T do everything. Not working makes it seem like you should have time for everything but the state of your brain and body are limiting. Report cards are limiting.

*while I accomplished the things I wanted to today… I think I skewed the balance in the wrong direction. Too much report cards. Not enough rest. Now I’m stewing in anxiety and stress and my head feels like shit.

Okay, let’s get some perspective. I pushed my brain a little, but not too hard, I did rest and meditate and paint and take it slow… at least until later in the evening because anxiety came out to play and then I pushed too hard and fell into a pit of report card stress.

I should have addressed the anxiety (breathe, CBT). From a (hopefully) calmer more logical place I could have weighed the cost/benefit of continuing report card work and gone from there. But I’m not perfect. I pushed. I stressed. I binged sugar. And that’s okay. I forgive me and give myself love. I’m doing the best I can.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow I re-assess my approach. Tomorrow I work on acceptance of the no-win report card situation.

and hmmmm i can promise i will update at least once a month, but it will probably end up being much quicker than that. whats happening on my end is that i have abt 7.5 chapters written (messily), and my deal with myself is that i will draft a later chapter for every early chapter i edit & post.

i know that’s evil of me to withhold stuff that‘a nearly ready to post LOL but it also means that ill probably post the second half of the fic MUCH faster, because it’ll be finished! and i have v little self-control. this baby’s already pushing 30k so we’re really in it now hahaha.

Huhu Chooms, I will be back today with new posts. Had no time, felt a bit ill, was also hanging out a bit too much on Insta (😂😅), met new peeps, and had a bunch of private things to do and also enjoying my free time this week and next week. Did a city trip and stuff.

5) TV show of the year?

I think we can safely say that it was KinnPorsche The Series: La Forte!! The show that inspired gnome chat to greater heights of insanity than ever before during its runtime, single-handedly tripled the number of fics I have posted on AO3, consumed my brain from April until - well, it's still gnawing on there tbh - and brought me some wonderful new fandom friends. Yeah it wins 🥰🥰🥰

13) How was your birthday this year?

My actual day of birth was super chill and snoozy, it was basically just cake and a takeaway and finishing watching Wheel of Time with my housemates (who had bought me a cake, which was GREAT bc I'd also bought myself a cake. allllll the cake). The exciting bit was supposed to have been the previous day, as I'd had tickets to a play starring literally the man himself, yes you guessed it, Toby Goddamn Stephens, BUT the last three performances (including that one) were cancelled due to cast illness, so a last-minute replacement plan had to be made!! And since Austentatious (stand-up comedians improvising a Jane Austen play based on a title suggestion from the audience, I adore them) had a show scheduled for four days later, and they're a shared fave of mine and the friend I was supposed to see Toby Stephens with, we rounded up five additional friends for good measure and had a lovely after-work theatre outing the following week 🥰

19) What’re you excited about for next year?

Oooh a very interesting and difficult question, because the things I'm most excited for haven't been planned yet, and exist even in my brain in only the most nebulous of ways!! The most certain one is that I'll be spending a lil bit of time at home in the summer, because not one but TWO of my friends from high school are getting married within ten days of each other (insane of them); I think I'm going on holiday abroad with my parents in the early autumn, which will be very exciting if we ever decide on a destination; I will almost certainly be taking a lil trip down to London over my birthday weekend for various antics and shenanigans (again, if I ever get round to planning it); E4 next instalment (not to repeat myself AGAIN, but: if we ever plan it); and ofc IF there is a BOC world tour Europe edition. Well. It WILL be Going Absolutely Insane O'Clock!!!!!! So like. To sum up. I will probably be going places and having a nice time but also I don't have all the information.

...but what I DO know is that I will be continuing to go absolutely insane about the blorbos with all the little gay people who live in my phone, and I am ALSO very excited for that!! I love you all 🥰💖❤️✨🥰

hi! i use photoshop, and all the gifmakers i know use it too. i don't think i've ever heard anyone use anything other than photoshop tbh. so i don't even know if there's an app you can use, especially on your phone... sorry
