Heartache
Since I put up my theories that Crowley and Aziraphale faked the break up in the Final Fifteen, I've had a LOT of people comment, "Then why are they so sad?"
LISTEN.
Imagine you and the person you love most in the world have to keep your relationship secret. Because no one would approve of it, and one or the other of you could be hurt or killed or imprisoned over it. So you keep it casual, and have to pretend you're not even friends.
Then you get a chance to change everything. You get a chance to save the world, and maybe have that relationship you both want so badly together. You even plan your proposal. You throw a big party and make it as romantic as you know how.
Then your party gets crashed by people who hate you.
And then an authority -- one that has the power to make both your lives horrible and maybe end them -- comes sniffing around. He's figured out you're up to something, and that you've teamed up, and been teamed up for a while. He maybe suspects you're more than friends, when even friends is something you are not allowed to be. He essentially black mails you into coming back with him, to what essentially amounts to prison, though he offers that your love can come with you. You'll both be in prison, and maybe not be able to save the world, but you'll be together, and safe.
You tell the person you love most in the world what's going on, that your plan has been uncovered, and beg him to come with so he will be safe. And your beloved says, "No, I'm not going, I want to fight for this. I want to fight for you, and for us. I want to save the world. We need to pretend to break up so I can keep working on our plan. You do what you can from inside prison, and I'll do my best from here, and let's try for this. For us." And then he breaks your heart and forces you to reject him. While your enemy watches and waits to take you to prison. And he doesn't let you leave without kissing you first. He gives you something while he kisses you that he hopes will help you. And then he goes.
Imagine your beloved tells you an authority has come sniffing around -- he suspects you're up to something and wants to haul you both to prison. Your beloved has no choice, he absolutely is going to prison, right now, but he wants you to come with him. You want to fight, you want to be free with your beloved and you want to save the world. So you tell him you have to fake a break up in order that one of you can stay free and hopefully make it work. And then you break his heart, and force him to reject you, while your enemy watches and waits to take him to prison. And you do not let him leave without kissing him first. You give him something while you kiss him that you hope will help him. And then you leave.
If you could do that while feeling nothing, totally confident that you're still a couple and everything is actually fine, you've got a different head than me. I wouldn't be okay, watching my husband get taken to prison for the crime of being in love with me. I certainly wouldn't be okay pretending not to care, or like we never meant much to each other after all.
The break up is fake. That doesn't mean any of those emotions are.
It actually makes it worse, in my opinion.
If Aziraphale had actually chosen Heaven over Crowley, Aziraphale would be sad, but not miserable. But he hasn't. He's going to prison without the one person he most wants to protect and be with. And he has no guarantee that Crowley will be safe, or that they will ever see each other again. He must be devastated.
If Aziraphale had chosen Heaven over Crowley, Crowley would have every right to be hurt and angry. But Aziraphale hasn't. He's being dragged to prison, where Crowley can't be with him and make sure he's okay, where Crowley knows he'll be treated badly, and Crowley's going to try to save the world, and if he succeeds, they can build that life together they've wanted for so long; but if he fails, they may never see each other again. He must be devastated.
Stop asking why they both look so sad if the break up is fake.
They are devastated.

I have no funny meme or gif for this one.
The "Aziraphale needs to see the circumstances around Crowley's fall in order to see what heaven really is and that's going to be what causes him to break away" take really, really bothers me. For a multiple reasons.
The first is because Aziraphale is already miserable and TERRIFIED of heaven. I am sick and tired of the expectation that he deserves to have some kind of (further) shattering emotional crisis about them. They've made him miserable for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years. They've kept him separate from the love of his live. He deserves for them to leave him alone. Not to be further traumatized by finding out more upsetting things. The reason he hasn't "broken away" from them isn't because he "needs to figure out that they're evil" or something like that. It's because they are too powerful and he knows how terrifying and awful they are and that they will do very, very awful things to him if he tries to rebel. The problem isn't Aziraphale's mindset. It's them. It's them. It's them. Period.
Our angel has been through f*cking ENOUGH. He does not deserve to suffer more. He does not need to be tormented more in order to somehow magically be transformed a good person. (Enough, please, with the takes that trauma builds character. That's bullsh*t.)
Please, PLEASE don't forget that all the things he says about heaven being good are said WHERE HEAVEN CAN HEAR HIM. They are effectively omnipresent.
Aziraphale doesn't need to "break away" - Heaven needs to leave him alone. Period. They're the wrongdoers in this situation, not him.
The second reason I hate, hate, hate this take is because we don't know whether Crowley wants Aziraphale to know about his fall. YOU DON'T ALWAYS WANT THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR TRAUMAS. And that does NOT indicate a lack of trust or a flaw in the relationship. It is FINE not to ever want to tell people you love about certain sh*tty things that happen to you. This is very normal and okay.
I can think of multiple separate instances of this in my own family.
My dad never told me or my mom about the things he experienced during war. Not in detail. What would be the point? It wouldn't make him feel better, and we wouldn't really understand, because we haven't experienced that. It would just upset everyone.
I never told my family I was sexually assaulted. Most survivors don't tell many people about the experience, including people close to them. Why the hell would I????? It would just make them miserable and it wouldn't make me feel better. Sharing things like that doesn't always help. I only talk about it with people who've been through the same thing.
If Crowley hasn't talked to Aziraphale about his fall and doesn't want him to know how bad it was, I say good for them both. Leave it there. I would feel very violated if Aziraphale found out inadvertently (or worse, went snooping - although I don't think he would do that, but I digress) about something Crowley didn't want him to know about, and the show presented it as something that "needed to happen". That's messed-up. We shouldn't go prying into people's traumas like that. (Besides, Aziraphale is already very aware of how lonely and depressed Crowley is. He knows Crowley didn't want to fall. He knows he's upset about it.) If Crowley is keeping it from Aziraphale, that is his prerogative. It is a completely valid choice that needs to be respected. It doesn't necessarily mean he made that choice out of some misguided notion of "protecting" Aziraphale. It could very well just mean he doesn't see the point in telling him something that would probably just make them both miserable.
I am not here for the trauma of Crowley's fall being weaponized as some kind of teaching tool to make Aziraphale "learn his lesson". (Especially if Crowley's not the one to tell him.) That's sick. It's cruel for them both. It would in all likelihood not be good for their relationship.
Ehh I feel like there's more I could say on this but I'm getting too emotional to be coherent so I'm just going to leave it there.
Thanks for reading, friends.

Good Omens fic recs
Hello all! Wanted to share a few of my longtime faves. These are all pre-s2, might do another with my post-s2 recs? Narrowed it down to 10, since that's the max links tumbl lets you have in a post.
Any Way You Want It
Author: Justkeeptrekkin Words: 27,500 Chapters: 5/5 Rating: Mature Mood: Vacation, soft but introspective After finally getting heaven and hell off their backs (at a cost) Crowley and Aziraphale go on holiday to a cottage in Scotland. Fluffy with fun snappy dialogue, the two really feel like best friends here! Aziraphale struggles with his tendency to go slower than even he wants.
Instructions Not Included
Author: Atalan Words: 68,000 Chapters: 13/13 Rating: Teen Mood: Detective / Gen (There are feelings but it earns that slowburn tag) My "if season 2 isn't good, this is my season 2" fic. Now, I liked season 2, but this is still SO good. After the notpocalypse, Aziraphale and Crowley start a detective agency investigating supernatural happenings together. New characters include Raphael (who totally missed the apocalypse haha whoops), and a big spooky dog (whomst I adore). Note that while this fic stands just fine on its own, there is an unfinished sequel that imo doesn't leave off anywhere stressful.
When in Rome
Author: Kedreeva Words: 4,000 Rating: General Mood: The liminal space of nighttime conversations What happens after Aziraphale invites Crowley to oysters: Wings and reading. Tentative and innocent in those early days.
the deft, sweet gesture of your hand
Author: deadgreeks Words: 12,000 Rating: Explicit Mood: Hurt/Comfort, introspection A few years after the failed apocalypse Crowley shows up badly injured at the bookshop. Aziraphale has to help heal Crowley and save them both, and still finds the time to knit his feelings.
Chemistry
Author: Twilightcitysky Words: 122,000 Chapters: 19/19 Rating: Explicit Mood: Y'ever want a side of learning something with your romcom? After realizing they might need their own corporations to heal themselves now that they're not working for heaven and hell, Aziraphale and Crowley turn on all their bodily functions. All of them. What could be a silly premise is played out very satisfyingly, the actual biology of hormones at play here is fascinating. (this is not really at all related but: has anyone else read Peeps by Scott Westerfeld? Because the format reminded me of this in that it did a similar thing of playing straight the concept of "what could cause vampires to be real" that drew on inspiration from real life parasites interspersed between the chapters. I dig it. Anyway!)
Reservations
Author: AnnetheCatDetective Words: 10,000 Chapters: 3/? (Technically unfinished, but leaves off in a satisfying spot) Rating: Not Rated Mood: Meta (Character study as story) “There's some competition for Aziraphale and Crowley's usual table at the Ritz…” A couple of miracles bend reality and, well… you ever been like, “The boys need therapy, but who could possibly give it to them?” I love crossovers where the TV boys meet other versions of themselves, this one is my favorite.
i can't say the words, so i wrote you into my verse
Author: mygalfriday (BrinneyFriday) Words: 5,000 Rating: Teen Mood: Snapshots through history "Crowley has tattoos and every few centuries, Aziraphale discovers a new one." Simple and paints a lovely picture.
By Definition
Author: idiopathicsmile Words: 3,000 Rating: Explicit Mood: Smutty but fond A night together after the Ritz fic where Aziraphale is asexual and Crowley isn’t and how that works for them. The dialogue here is positively delightful.
Bark Dust
Author: rfsmiley Words: 8,000 Rating: Mature (mostly for injuries) Mood: Whump, Hurt/Comfort, Historical Crowley is very badly injured in a battle, and Aziraphale has to figure out how to save his life.
Tell Me A Story
Author: brilliant_or_insane Words: 5,000 Rating: Teen Mood: Soft and warm Aziraphale likes telling stories and Crowley likes to listen. But when the demon is dissatisfied by sad endings and can't relate to the happy ones, Aziraphale decides to move them forward by telling a new story. (Of course, Crowley isn't entirely satisfied with the angel's perspective on that one either.)

No Feelings So In Unison (Good Omens fanfic)
Right, I figured it's time I shared my newest fanfic "properly".
rating: G
Length: 6k words (oneshot)
Summary: Overwhelmed by the all-encompassing brightness and endless vastness, Aziraphale manages to sneak out of heaven.
Excerpt:
Crowley hesitated again. His brows furrowed as pain crept onto his features. Of course, safety (Aziraphale’s safety) came first, but that didn’t mean the demon wasn’t hurting. He now smacked his lips and sighed.
‘Do you want me here?’ he asked, the same defeated voice that had been resonating in Aziraphale’s mind ever since that ill-fated morning, despite the passage of time.
The angel was so, so glad he had made it rain. He could only hope the raindrops would mask it when the tears building up in his eyes would inevitably overflow. Still, as he nodded, he could do nothing about the quiver of his chin.
‘Kay,’ said Crowley, but rather than joining the angel on the bench, he crouched in front of him to meet him at eye-level.
Aziraphale was wishing so hard that he could remember a single scenario, a single opening line of the countless speeches he had rehearsed ad nauseam for when he met Crowley again. I’m so sorry. I was wrong. I wasn’t thinking. I didn’t know what to do. I never should have… Please, give me another chance. Forgive me. I need you. I can’t do this without you.
I love you.
Yet, nothing sounded right, nothing was coherent. It felt as if an impenetrable wall had risen somewhere between his mind and his lips. Messages crashed like angry waves against this dam that held them, so desperate to get across, but instead only scattering into a chaotic whirlpool where he could no longer make head or tails of any single thought.
‘So what happened?’ Crowley broke the silence, his voice a little less distant.
Aziraphale opened his mouth, but words still wouldn’t come. How could he even begin to explain?
‘Did they kick you out?’ Crowley tried guessing.
Another head shake was all he could manage.
‘Did you run?’
‘S-sort of,’ Aziraphale finally forced his speech apparatus to obey, though each syllable spilled out of his mouth in a clumsy murmur. ‘N-not quite. Just… for a while. I, I couldn’t… It was all… All so… so…’
He began gasping despite himself. It frustrated him how hard it was to formulate simple concepts into plain sentences. The frustration made his thoughts even more scattered. His lips, his cheeks, his tongue and his limbs felt so numb as if they weren’t even parts of his body. He felt he would either be sick or start crying any moment.
‘Bright and empty?’ Crowley supplied to the angel’s massive relief. ‘Yeah, you never did like it. Neither of us did. Always jumping at the first excuse to get away from the office, do some fieldwork instead.’

Fanatic Intervention Part 9!!
Beginning || Previous || Next
*****************
You pound your way to the nearest bar, where everyone had agreed to meet. The three of them are standing around, talking over glasses of wine. Your hands are in fists, your nails digging into your palms as you approach. They acknowledge you as you enter their field of vision, but you say nothing. Instead, you beeline for Aziraphale, put your arms around him, and hang on for dear life. Sometimes you just need to hug an angel.
There’s a pause where Anathema says something about your aura, and then Aziraphale hugs you back.
Dear Reader, I’m not sure if it ever happened in your life, but for this Puffin there came a time when it was made very clear that wanting to be held or wanting to lean on another person in public was unacceptable (and, in fact, embarrassing) once you reached a certain age. And yet, we as humans are social creatures. The need to be held is a very normal response, especially after something particularly upsetting happens (like having the sanctity of washroom privacy violated, for example). Perhaps you’re not the kind of person who, out of nowhere, feels the desire to be held, but perhaps you know someone who is. And so, I would like to impress upon you the incredible difference it makes, the immeasurable relief it brings, to know that you have someone with you who will hold you back without question or comment. Just hold you, and wait.
Aziraphale makes it clear he intends to do just that.
“Take your time, dear,” he says gently. And so you do.
After a moment, the clink of a glass next to you makes you look up. Someone has given you a glass of the same wine everyone else has. You pull away and take a sip, feeling much calmer and very grateful.
“Thanks,” You say.
“Anytime,” Aziraphale replies.
“What happened?” Anathema asks.
Thus, you recount how Metatron trapped you in the washroom until he had said his peace. By the time you finish, there are three very angry faces around you. You feel validated enough to take another, much larger, sip of the wine. Aziraphale is the first to speak.
“Well for starters, I invite you to stay in my bookshop however long you like. Pet indeed! You are a help, yes, but you are a guest, and certainly not disposable, whatever he says.”
“And,” Crowley adds, “From what you said, Aziraphale and I can get you home whenever you want anyway. Probably, I mean. No dUbIOus motives involved, at least.”
Anathema seems to be thinking. After another few seconds, she asks:
“Why did you take the coffee?”
You all look at her, surprised.
“Well I mean,” she continues, “If the Metatron wants to know, he probably has a reason. If you tell us, maybe we can figure it out for ourselves and find a way around it.”
“Or they could just not tell him,” Crowley suggests with snark. “Then it doesn’t matter.”
“I mean, it might,” Anathema counters, “We don’t know that it doesn’t.”
“I took it because of the Coffee Theory,” You say with a shrug. It’s not like it’s a big deal. “But I mean, I don’t know why that would matter to him.”
“Well,” Anathema says, “That might depend on what the Coffee Theory is.”
“Well, it’s the idea that the Metatron did something to that coffee he was going to give Aziraphale. To, like, make Aziraphale trust him, or listen to him or whatever, so that he would go back to Heaven.” You pause. “There’s also an interpretation of it where it was a metaphor like ‘take my offer or face death.’ But most people think about the first one, and that’s the one that was in my brain when I did it. There aren’t a lot of people who actually believe it. I mean, not anymore, anyway.”
“So you think the Metatron drugged Aziraphale’s coffee?” Anathema raises an eyebrow. “And you drank it, yes? So...did he?”
“No,” You reply, “It was exactly what it was supposed to be. An oat milk latte with almond syrup. And I didn’t think he actually messed with it. I just wasn’t willing to take the chance, that’s all.”
Crowley’s face scrunches. “And you think he might need to know that for some reason?” He looks pointedly at Anathema.
“He might,” She gives a thoughtful hum. “I’ll think about it. I might ask the Cards later.”
-----------
The wait for boarding didn’t feel so long after that. As you board, you notice how spacious First Class is. Aziraphale and Crowley sit in the seats ahead of you and Anathema, with Aziraphale in the window seat. You notice Crowley casually trying to stick his legs out into the aisle and wonder vaguely whether it’s because he needs the space, or to try and trip the flight attendants. Both? Probably both. Okay, definitely both, you note, as a stewardess almost falls face-first into the aisle. Aziraphale gently swats at Crowley in reprimand, but you can tell it’s half-hearted and wholly-fond.
Your only trouble comes when you need to use the washroom, but Anathema, ever clever and aura-observant, suggests to go with you so that you can knock if anything goes wrong. Thankfully, nothing does, and you both return to your seats.
“You know,” Anathema says, leaning forward, “I just overheard the strangest thing. It seems that all of the normal airline food on this plane has gone missing. All that they have to serve is the first-class food.”
“Wait,” You say, holding back a laugh, “So everyone on this flight gets to eat the fancy, chef-prepared, gourmet meals?”
Crowley doesn’t hold back his laugh. “Oh, the big bosses won’t like that!”
“You two wouldn’t have had anything to do with that, would you?” Anathema asks suspiciously. You notice she’s smiling while she says it.
“Psh!” Crowley waves away the thought. “Why would I? Doesn’t matter to me either way.”
“Honestly, Miss Device,” Aziraphale adds, “I have no idea why you immediately accuse us of something that seems so clearly to be a mere...clerical error.”
Ah-ha! Culprit found. Clerical error your arse.
“You know,” You sigh, “It really is no wonder why Crowley loves you so much.”
“Ngk,” says Crowley. Aziraphale responds with a pleased-sounding hum. You relax, and notice between the seats that Aziraphale places his hand on top of Crowley’s and leaves it there.
They like holding hands – your insides scream.
--------
When you disembark from the plane, you hear all the other passengers around you complimenting the flight attendants on the excellent food and promising to leave excellent reviews online. You keep your laughter as quiet as you can. Aziraphale’s little prank is going to cause the airline issues for YEARS. Crowley must be so proud.
The speed and ease with which you clear customs and baggage claim is probably because you’re traveling with two supernatural entities. In no time at all, you’re outside of the airport flagging down a cab. Crowley opens the door with enthusiasm and outright glee.
“After you, Angel,” he says, “You think 90 miles an hour in London is bad, I can’t wait for you to see this!”
Dear Reader, I don’t know if you have ever been to New York City, but I assure you that Crowley’s driving has nothing on the NYC cabbies. Aziraphale spends the entire drive trying to hold on to something and taking deep breaths as the cab violently jerks to a stop millimeters from the car in front. You suggest he close his eyes. He does. It doesn’t seem to help.
-------
The taxi lets you out in front of The Ritz. Because of course you’re staying at The Ritz. Aziraphale goes to check in while Crowley tells Anathema he needs the washroom, and mutters to you that he wants to empty all the soap dispensers. You try so hard to hold in your laughter that it comes out your nose anyway. The demon flashes you a cheeky grin before disappearing around the corner. Anathema looks at you.
“Probably been a while since he had a fresh audience,” You say to her. She chuckles.
“And you’re so obliging too. No doubt he’s having a great time with all this.”
“Hey, Anathema,” You begin uncertainly, “How...I mean...I’m just worried about...things. How are we going to find Jesus anyway? I just...I don’t really have anymore information to give. I don’t even know if he’s going to be a baby or an adult this time.”
“Hm...” Anathema thinks for a minute, “Well, I’m going to try and get some readings, see if I can get some kind of direction for us to go in. It’s a big country, but what I’m hoping is that it will sort of work like dowsing.”
“Dowsing? Like looking for water with sticks?”
“Sort of. In a nutshell, you pay attention to the vibrations in the Earth, and the closer you get, the stronger the vibrations become. It makes sense to think that Jesus would make pretty noticeable vibrations. That’s my working hypothesis anyway.”
You nod. That will do for now. Aziraphale and Crowley both return, with the demon wiping his hands on his trousers, and the four of you take the elevator to your room.
The Royal Suite.
“Are...you….serious??” Anathema asks. Honestly, you’re too stunned looking around the enormous suite with four bedrooms to say anything. It’s bigger than most houses. You take out your phone and start taking pictures.
“Well, if we’re going to stay at The Ritz,” Aziraphale says cheerfully, pronouncing the capital letters, “Best to do it Properly.”
“But this is ridiculous!”
Aziraphale isn’t paying attention anymore. He’s gone to tell Crowley not to draw mustaches on the expensive artwork.
“Unlimited resources,” You say to her, “Make for expensive taste.”
“No, kidding,” she sighs, “I’m glad you’re here. I’m gonna need some help with these two.”
Ha, You think to yourself, I knew it.

Aziraphale didn’t want to go to heaven, not even to “make it a better place if I’m in charge”, not until he was told he could restore Crowley.
Because restoring Crowley to angelic status seems to him, is to him a perfect solution for the problems they seem to have, together: their opposing sides, status of natural enemies, their shared loneliness of being outsiders in their worlds. They can be friends, anything, if Crowley is an angel. He won’t have to push down his goodness in fear of hell (although honestly I think Crowley’s aversion to being “good” is much more than that), and angels won’t have to be cruel, since Aziraphale would be there, making decisions, with Crowley by his side to help him figure out what is truly better and kinder (like he does throughout the season).
To Crowley however being restored to an angel is missing the point entirely. It’s like being given forgiveness when you are owed an apology. If they give you “forgiveness” you are just brought back in until they decide you should be cast away again, when you become too inconvenient, when you demand to be heard, to be treated right. Of course he doesn’t want to go back to heaven — the whole system is his personal hell, more than actual hell ever was.
Just as when Crowley feels betrayed when Aziraphale offers him to go back, so does Azi when Crowley asks him to run off, to continue as things are. To Aziraphale (as of right now) there can be no peaceful happiness for them while they remain as they are. They will always be an angel and a demon, pretending, hiding, struggling to survive one disaster after the other. They can change all that, he feels, he offers Crowley peace, safety, and Crowley refuses it to (seemingly) keep things as they are.
That’s what his “nothing lasts forever is about”. He offers a reprieve and Crowley refuses it. While to Crowley he is throwing away “them” to drag him back to the broken system he knows from experience will only chew them up and destroy everything, in the end.
“I don’t think you understand what I’m offering you,” is the line that hits me the hardest, somehow. Because Crowley indeed doesn’t. He is right about understanding better than Aziraphale could about what it would truly be like. But he doesn’t understand the intent, the offer: be with me, without hiding, without fear, working for the betterment of everything as you used to, as we’ve been doing in secret last 6000 years.
“No nightingales”, oh how Aziraphale face changes at that. Because for them, finally, here, Crowley made subtext text. Yes, they are, were in love. Yes, they had their perfect pocket of a starry night, falling in love. But now the sun is up, and the nightingale isn’t there, maybe even wasn’t here ever. It was just a perfect dream, given up now. For Aziraphale — given up as he offered Crowley to make it a daylight reality, a partnership not on the spy benches, or in an old timeless bookshop, or in the private conversations. A reality where Crowley doesn’t have to hide his eyes all the time.
For Crowley — the dream is given up, because once again Aziraphale is choosing heaven over him. He doesn’t know he’s doing it for him.
So of course the kiss doesn’t save them. They both feel rejected, feel like the one is trying to drag another into a tortured existence. I still struggle to decipher the “I forgive you”. An obvious nod to s1, and to general Christian forgiveness. Does he forgive the fall, the rejection, no nightingales? The fight? As many people said, it’s generally Aziraphale’s “holier than thou” attitude, and there is a bit of it here, some spite as he collects himself. “I know what’s better for us and I forgive you for not realizing it. I forgive you for leaving me alone (in our shared loneliness) to make a better world for us.” Maybe it’s that.
I honestly don’t think one honest conversation could fix things right now for them. They need to change. Crowley needs to grow over his cynicism, to figure out a way to exist in the world so unfair he refuses to acknowledge he is constantly changing it for the better. He needs to stand his ground in a sustainable way.
While Aziraphale needs to realize the current system won’t cut it. It’s cruel and uncaring, it’s following the supposed word and whim of a god who’s left the building. He honestly believes it just needs right people on top, but well, it had Gabriel who cared just for a little bit, and threw him away instantly. Heaven won’t cut it, and this is gonna burn him badly next season. But he’s still not there.
Anyway, I love good conflict, god bless this tragic clown mess, thanks for the gorgeous drama. Nice gays, sorry about depression.

we could have been us
You idiot, we could’ve been us
We could have been us
But hadn’t they been? For centuries, millennia even, they had been well…them. Aziraphale and Crowley. Especially for the past two years they had been together all the time, spending nearly every waking moment side by side. And even before then, they’d just pop up into each other's lives whenever they wanted or needed. Crowley could hardly remember a time when he and Aziraphale hadn’t been there for one another.
And now, he was alone. His only friend in the world had left him. His angel had left him.
And the worst part? Aziraphale hadn’t just left. He tried to take Crowley with him, and tried to get him to come back. To work for Heaven. Why the hell would he want that? They had been happy in their own little corner of the world and together. An Angel and a Demon but neither lived quite by the rules and now Aziraphale uprooted both of their lives and became the Supreme Archangel of Heaven. Wasn’t that against everything they stood for. They were an Angel and a Demon on their own side. Not heaven not hell, just Aziraphale and Crowly. But now, Aziraphale was with heaven once again.
And he still went even after Crowley had poured his entire heart out. He finally worked up the nerve to kiss him. Why didn’t he stay? What did Crowley do wrong? What the fuck?
Now, Crowley found himself across the street from the bookshop looking at the spot where Aziraphale and Metatron had just gone up to Heaven. He didn’t even know what to do with himself. So he just stood there, leaning against the Bentley, trying to figure out what to do next.
He looked around, Maggie was behind the counter at the record store and Nina was serving people coffee, Muriel was outside the bookshop. How dare she? Everything was just as it had been last time he’d been out here. Everyone was acting like everything was the same, like everything was alright, like the world hadn’t just changed forever. Crowley’s best friend, the man that he loved, was gone and no one cared. No one even knew. No one would ever know.
So, Crowley got in his car, and he just went. Went where? Anywhere but here. Anywhere he wouldn’t have to think about Aziraphale and all he had lost in the last hour. So, he put his foot on the gas, the radio at max volume and turned whenever he got too used to the road he was on.
He was doing a pretty good job at drowning out his emotions, when a certain song came on. All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. Because of course it was, one of few “modern” songs Crowley could think of that Aziraphale truly enjoyed, and a song about love. As if it wasn't enough that the demon had lost his angel, the universe was playing some cruel joke on him. Which should be impossible, he designed the damned thing. And yet here he was.
This was simply the last straw. Crowley pulled off to the side of the road and broke down. He cried, he screamed, he hit shit. But the real kicker is, Crowley cried. It was the first time in a while that he let himself have a good and proper cry. And it had been even longer since Aziraphale wasn't there to help him through it. He wasn't sure how long he had been there, it felt like something in between a few seconds and a few hours. But Crowley found himself curled up in a ball in his passenger seat, fresh out of tears to cry, shaking, and struggling to breath.
It was moments like these when Crowley wished he could die. He wished he could stop feeling. Particularly this feeling, he wasn’t quite sure what to call it, but it was just about the worst thing Crowley ever felt. And you would think that by now, Crowley would know how to not feel like this, or at least to make it not so bad. But he had always had Aziraphale to help him to make him feel better and keep breathing. Now though, he was all on his own, and he had no idea what to do. So he sat there in his passenger seat for at least an hour, doing all he could to get his breath back to a usual pattern and just generally calm himself back down.
Soon enough he was back on the road, his breath still a little shaky and his body still a little weak.
Crowley had absolutely no clue where he was going until he got there. The only place that really brought him comfort, but also the very place he was trying to get away from. He found himself right in front of the book shop five hours later. Not entirely trusting himself to drive much more, Crowley walked across the street and into Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death. He went straight to a table, not wanting to have to deal with people. But almost immediately, and it truly seemed as though she could read his thoughts and was trying to spite him, Nina showed up at his table.
“No.” he said before she got the chance to ask what he wanted, or God Forbid a much noisier question.
“What can I get you, Sir.”
“I already said no.” he felt like he was about to snap.
“Well then, I hate to break it to ya mister, but if you're not gonna have a coffee… you’re gonna have to leave,” she said, as sweet as she could. But Crowley didn’t reply. “Look,” she was no longer attempting to sweet talk him into listening. She knew it wouldn’t work. “I don’t know why you're moping around in a corner all alone. But I’ve got paying customers that could be drinking coffee they paid for at this table, which as I’m sure you're aware, is not what’s happening at this table.”
And at this point, Crowley is getting pissed. But he decides it’s best just to order a coffee. “Black coffee, hot.” He mutters, almost whispering.
“What was that?” Nina teases.
“Oh you heard me!” Crowley hisses. Nina leaves to get his and the other patrons orders. And Crowley is left alone with his thoughts, yet again.
Even in the bustling coffee shop, Crowley feels utterly alone. He truly had no place to go. In the past, when he was unable to return to hell, he had slept in his car in the nights and visited Aziraphale in the bookshop during the days. But now, he still could not return to hell and there was no one he might visit.
And it was at this moment that Crowley realized he doesn’t have any friends. He had no one. He was a demon all alone in the world, just as he should have been. And he had absolutely no clue how to cope with it.
And oh, here he goes again.
He’s not crying this time.
Or at least he doesn’t think he is.
But he can’t quite breathe properly.
And the walls are closing in on him.
And-
“Here you are,” and here Nina was, coffee in hand. Breaking Crowley out of a spiral. “Hot black coffee.” she smiles.
“Thanks,” Crowley replied. He wasn’t sure what else to say, but Nina stayed there, just looking at him. So he looked straight back at her.
“So where’s your f-” She started.
“No.” Crowley snapped, cutting her off.
“Yes, actually. Where is your friend?” Now, Nina isn’t usually one to pry, but this topic was of particular interest to her. These two men had meddled in her love life, so she felt it was only fair for her to do the same to them.
“Gone.” he whispered. And this time, Nina truly could not hear him.
“What was that?” She tried to sound as kind as possible. Which was…not her strong suit, but this guy seemed like he needed some kindness right about now.
“He’s gone.” Crowley said again, this time a little louder, and trying a little harder to hold back the tears that were ever so persistently forming in the corners of his eyes. And this time Nina doesn’t respond. Crowley is looking down at his table so he thinks she might have left. That is, of course, until he feels her slide into the seat next to him, and place a hand on his shoulder.
“I am so, so sorry.” she tells him softly. Crowley turns his head to face her but he still can't meet her eyes. And only now, when he’s finally realized that he’s not all alone, he lets the tears come. And come they do, it's like the floodgates have opened. And Crowley just sits there, with a near stranger. Crying and being comforted.
Maybe Crowley lost the love of his life.
But, maybe that doesn’t mean that the world has to end.
Sure, he’s gonna be sad, and pissed off, and all those other negative feelings about it. But he supposed that those feelings just have to happen, because if he tries to stop them, every day could be just as bad as today was. And, while Crowley doesn’t know what's next, the world will keep on turning. No matter how bad he wishes it would stop.
In the middle of Crowley's stream of thoughts, Nina has gotten up from where she was sitting next to him and she says, “Welp, I’ve got to get back to working. But, if you need anything, anything at all, I’m here. Just come and get me and I’ll do all I can.” She squeezes Crowley's shoulder, and heads off.
We could have been us. Crowley thinks. We could have been us, but you left me, to do God knows what up in Heaven.
And maybe they would have the chance to be “them” again. After whatever Aziraphale was doing up there was over and done with. If he ever decided to come back to Earth, Crowley would be there waiting for him. Willing and able to do whatever Aziraphale wanted. Barring, of course, going with him to Heaven.
But until then, if “then” ever comes, Crowley will just have to make it to the next day. And then the next and the next. He’ll try to get on with life. But he knew that hurt he felt when Aziraphale left, would never entirely go away.

So I can’t get the idea out of my mind of an aziracrow fix it fic, right, post season two. so like aziraphale comes back to tell Crowley he’s gonna quit being archangel, but he hasn’t actually done so yet. Crowley’s been moping around at the bookshop. And something or other happens and he touches Crowley but he gets burned from his touch cuz he’s just too freaking holy. I can’t stop thinking about that idea
A/N- All these requests I am getting are SO sad! Are you all okay??? I recommend watching Staged to help all our broken hearts after season two.
Warnings- Angst and season two spoilers
Aziraphale x Crowley
Word Count- 472
Summary- Refer to the request
If The Heavens Ever Did Speak He's The Last True Mouth Piece.
Tumblr media
Muriel has been tending to the bookshop in Aziraphale's absence. Crowley has been absolutely no help in Muriel's adjustment period to Earth. He spends most days at Aziraphale's desk or sleeping on the sofa by the window even though Crowley very much does not need sleep. Sleep helps him escape his neverending thoughts of Aziraphale and when he wasn't sleeping he was tending to his plants angrily. Crowley did almost everything with anger since Aziraphale's departure. Everything made him angry and without Aziraphale, there was no light, no dinners at the Ritz, and the earth was no longer his favorite place it was the past.
Crowley was having one of his regular days-long naps when the door to the bookshop slammed open rather loudly and he awoke to a familiar presence. He rose quickly in disbelief as he saw his familiar angel walk through the door. Perhaps he was having a dream as humans typically experience but he had never once heard of a demon dreaming but then again Crowley was no ordinary demon. He digs his nails into the palm of his hand because he had once heard pinching yourself can wake you from a dream but nothing happened. Once Crowley's eyes met Aziraphale's eyes he knew this was no dream his mind could not replicate the beauty of Aziraphale's eyes. It would be like trying to recreate a gorgeous work of art from memory.
Aziraphale took a deep breath when his eyes met Crowley's and he sighed out his name. There were so many things they wanted to say to each other but both were too afraid to speak.
"Crowley, I-" Aziraphale steps forward slowly. " I shouldn't have left."
"I agree," Crowley looks still feeling the anger bubbling in him.
"I don't want to be an archangel... I want to step down," Aziraphale states almost in a whisper.
"And I am supposed to believe that," Crowley seethes.
"Yes, I would never lie to Crowley," He says shocked and grabs Crowley's hand to let him know how much he means this statement.
Crowley hisses, Aziraphale assumes it is because Crowley is still angry but then he looks down to see Crowley's hand bubbling like he stuck it in a vat of holy water.
Aziraphale gasps and quickly drops Crowley's hand. Crowley holds his hand up and looks at the back and front of it.
"What have they done to you, Angel," he says with disappointment and a look of pity.
"I- I don't know, I'm so sorry," Aziraphale backs away in shock afraid he may hurt Crowley again.
Crowley's anger he had been holding against Aziraphale had quickly shifted to Heaven and what they had done to his angel.
Crowley steps toward Aziraphale to show him he is not afraid of him, "We will figure this out, angel! We always do."

Do you think Aziraphale has been verbally, emotionally and psychologically abused by Heaven as well?
I will answer this question like one asked in good faith even though my gut is telling me there's a 50/50 chance it is very much not one.
So!
There are two parts to his answer, or rather one question is actually two.
Firstly, we have to talk about whether heaven is abusive, what that abuse looks like, and how it differs from hell.
Secondly, how did the results of question one affect Aziraphale, if it is different from what the other angels in heaven face, and what additional trauma might he have experienced due to being on earth.
I could write a 10k meta post about this and go into the finest detail, but I will just try and stick to the main points for now. It's still going to be way too long because I am so fucking tired of people accusing me of 'hating' Aziraphale or harassing me on my posts or in my inbox.
Is heaven abusive? Yes, and it applies to both heaven as an institution and the Archangels running it.
Getting to know Muriel and what their life looks like was extremely helpful in properly defining this, because they showed us that although the Archangels tend to travel and work as a group, most of the angels are incredibly isolated.
The result is complete emotional neglect, which not only impairs your ability to form and maintain healthy relationships with other people, it also stops your from learning emotional regulation and how to behave and feel as a part of (angelic) society. We see the consequences of that in Muriel, who comes across as overly naive, socially awkward, and out of touch with not just people but themselves.
When your entire life has been shrunk down to what happens inside your own head, suddenly being confronted with having to live outside of your mind is jarring, overwhelming, and foreign.
How do you talk to people when no one ever taught you how to do that? How do you behave around someone after a lifetime of being alone? How do your regulate your responses to their behaviour?
Who are you when there is someone else to perceive you?
Figuring that out is complicated and it takes time, and while most of the angels are only distantly aware of how humans live and what kind of interactions some of the other angels might have, the effects of that neglect stay the same whether they are aware of it or not.
Muriel shows us that angels are not born/made as a blank slate, and neither are humans for that matter. Tabula rasa as a philosophical belief is one thing, but reality is very, very different.
Angels also appear to have the same inherent need for connection, for a caretaker that loves them unconditionally, for someone to help them figure out how to be, and that provides a safe space to make mistakes. Without some or all of that, you grow up into a disregulated, socially awkward if not inept person who does not know how to have relationships or how to properly exist.
It is one of the reasons why autistic people are a) almost always traumatized to some degree and b) do not know how to socialize. No one ever works with our brains, and the resulting neglect is very similar to not receiving any help at all.
If you are now curious what happens if you're both autistic and were completely socially neglected, the result is uh. me. Hi! Not nice, but at least I am very sure I win the award for being my therapist's most fucked up client, so that's something.
Yet the angels are not solely emotionally neglected, the system/household they live in demands a low self-esteem, a lack of individual identity, and complete adherence to a defined ideology and behavioural pattern. In short, you are told how to be a useless, tiny part in a bigger machine, that your only purpose is to succeed at your tasks, and any opportunity for individual development is removed or destroyed.
If you are now once again curious what that might be like, uh, yeah, hi once more. Obviously my childhood was not exactly like an angels life, but the core characteristics were the same, just realized differently. Again, not pretty, really, really fucks you over.
Take that and the neglect, combine it into one person, and then drop them in the Garden of Eden—hello Aziraphale! Crowley got dropped into hell first, experienced more abuse, and then dug his way up into Eden before joining him.
Aziraphale experienced everything Muriel (and Crowley, and every other celestial being) also experienced, with one main difference: He is the one who got away.
We have to remember that out of every single celestial being, Aziraphale got the best deal. He did not fall, he got out of heaven (more or less) permanently, and was then largely left alone.
Does that erase anything I laid out above? No, of course not!
It simply provided him with the opportunity to heal, to take his cPTSD and who knows what other disorders he developed as a result, and start recovering.
Canonically, heaven did not bother him, like, ever, except for the odd note about 'frivolous miracles' or ten minutes of catching up every millennia. They only started monitoring him once they started to suspect he was involved with Crowley and trying to stop the apocalypse from happening.
Aziraphale worked on some things, he got better in many regards, especially with Crowley there to support him, but after six thousand years, many aspects have stayed the same or regressed back to the start over and over.
I will tell you a hard pill to swallow now: If you refuse to acknowledge your issues to instead live in a world of nicer denial and compartmentalization even when you have been offered the chance to change it, that is partly on YOU.
Is it fair? Fuck no! It's not fair at all, and I have had so many breakdowns over that fact. I did not break it, this is not my FAULT so why should I have to fix it all on my own? Why do I have to do the work, not them? How come they get away with it while I am going to have to carry this for the rest of my life?
I still have to do it though. I have to do the work, no matter how uncomfortable and exhausting, because I want to get better.
-
This conversation has so many facets and is a lot more complex, but this is already long enough, so if you have any questions or want to know something specific (while asking politely and in good faith) just send me an ask; I will do my best to answer it.
-
We are now only missing the last part of question 2, and that one is also so fucking complicated reducing it to the main points almost feels wrong, but I will do it anyway. Again, just ask if you have questions.
Abusive households are horrible, and you want to get out and away, but they are also the only thing you know. The world is scary, too big, too open, where did all the rules go that were previously defining your life?
Surviving in an abusive environment means you establish routine after routine after routine for every possible horrible scenario, you write a mental rule book to try and reduce the abuse (don't make them angry, don't cry when they're already shouting, don't do this, don't do that, do x but not y), and THAT is your socialization. THAT is everything you know, everything you are, everything you know relationships to be like.
Once you are away from that, you are completely and utterly lost. Even breathing feels like making a mistake, you feel watched, judged, rated, berated, you have them stuck in your fucking head. So you keep sticking to what you know, your behavioural patterns that have kept you safe your entire life.
The problem is that they kept you safe, past tense. In a healthy environment, all of those coping mechanisms are now maladaptive and harm you instead of keeping you safe.
However, breaking out of them and starting from scratch is terrifying. So, so, so terrifying. I live in constant fear, I feel judged and unsafe in my own flat with the curtains shut and the lights on. I feel like I am about to get subjected to another one of his fits for daring to use the stove.
No matter what you do, your body and brain are SCREAMING at you that diverging from what you know will kill you—and then you have to do it anyway.
Do it alone and afraid and awkwardly but DO IT. Otherwise you will always find a way to recreate the environment you grew up in, whether that is people getting into unhealthy relationships and replicating the patterns they know (which Aziraphale does with Crowley, e.g. the push-pull of his affection) or eventually even returning to it because they ruined you, but a part of you is so, so attached to them you just have to try and change them.
Some people can move on from it without going back, but sometimes you need to try and experience that failure for yourself before being able to move on, and that's where Aziraphale is at.
He needs to try and fail to be capable of finally committing to recovering.
So, to summarize this entire shitshow: Yes, Aziraphale experienced emotional neglect and abuse, and while it is different to what Crowley went through and objectively less intense and physical, it is still just as valid and horrid.
Just because a car accident is objectively worse than falling off a bike doesn't mean the biker's pain is unimportant. Both can kill you, both can hurt you, and both deserve to get their injuries treated.

I saw your post and I decided, why not? I've never done this before! (I'm no good at thinking of prompts). Currently I have one thing on my mind: Good Omens. And maybe this is weird to ask, but could you maybe take a scene from it and steddie-fy it? I don't care who's who.
There's a scene, which is my personal favorite, where Crowley asks Aziraphale to hang out after having dinner, and Aziraphale, with a soft voice and a longing look, says "You go too fast for me, Crowley."
And of course the "just a little demonic miracle of my own" scene. That ones a bit longer to explain, so I'd search it up for a better experience. This is the one all of us, including the author, speculate is when Aziraphale realized he was in love with Crowley.
Uhhhhhh yeah peace out ✌
Okay yes I know exactly what you’re talking about, I’ve seen the show and I’ve read the book (more than once actually lol) BUT it’s been forever and right now I’m not remembering anything besides the vaguest outline of the scene in the forest, when he starts going by Crowley. And then a few random scenes that I had to look up 😩 strangely enough I couldn’t find the “you go too fast for me, Crowley” scene anywhere which SUCKS because now I need to see it just to see it 😂
Also side note I would LOVE to Steddify the entire thing, I feel like Nancy would make a great Anathema, and Robin would be a fantastic Madame Tracy, esp considering the fact that Aziraphale/Steve (that’s what I’m imagining, at least) literally inhabits her body. And there’s even a Party what with Adam and them! I’m thinking Dustin as Adam, Max as Pepper, Will as Wensleydale, and Mike as Brian.
Anyways. Yes I love this a lot, thank you 😂

“Didn’t you have a flaming sword?” Eddifer asks, tilting his head
“Uh- oh, uh-” Steve stutters. It’s embarrassing, angels don’t stutter, but he’s caught wrong-footed, not sure he did the right thing anymore, and with Eddifer looking at him like that-
“You did! It was flaming like anything,” Eddifer says triumphantly. “Lost it already, have we?”
“I… gave it away,” Steve mumbles.
“You what?” Eddifer asks incredulously.
“I gave it away!” He shouts.
Eddifer looks at him for a second. Blinks. Looks away.
Steve’s left with a feeling he did something right. It’s more comforting than it should be, coming from a demon.
~~~~~~~~
Steve tilts his head. “Is that you under there, Eddifer?”
“‘S Eddie,” he grumps, lifting his helmet and sighing. “‘S Alright, lads, I know him.” He shakes his head. “What the heaven are you doing here?”
“I could ask the same of you!”
~~~~~~~~
“Animals,” Steve hisses, locked in a dungeon. This is a pickle if ever there was one.
“Animals don’t kill each other with clever machines, Angel, only humans do that.”
“Eddie,” he says, can’t help the excitement in his voice. Then he sees what Eddie’s wearing. “Oh, good Lord.”
Eddie’s lounging against the wall, arms crossed, looking Steve up and down. “What the deuce are you doing, locked up in the Bastille? I thought you were opening up a bookshop!”
“I was! I got… peckish.”
“Peckish,” Eddie parrots flatly.
Steve huffs. “Well if you must know, it was the crepes. Can’t get decent ones anywhere but Paris.”
“Angel,” Eddie says, “you’re really something else.”
Steve can’t quite figure out if that’s a compliment or not.
~~~~~~~~
“Y’know,” Steve says, almost certain Eddie’s going to push him up against a wall again for it. It’s half the reason he says it. “I think, deep down, you really are quite a nice person.”
Eddie doesn’t push him up against a wall, only smirks into his drink. “Only because you’re just enough of a bastard to be worth knowing.”
☔ Is there a fic concept you have that you’d like to just explain and share because you’re not sure you’ll ever write it? If so, what is it?
Ah, yes!!! And I'll tag @sb-essebi here since you also asked this question!
I'll talk about the always angels AU! (Who wants to help me find a better name for it? lmao, but that's what I'm calling it in my head.) I don't know if I'll ever actually write it properly because it feels very Involved and my vision for it would involve it being a bit of an epic length, meanwhile I've never written a thing past like 2k words? But I do really love the idea of it.
So this is an AU where Crowley never fell: he's still an angel in Heaven. Of course, he still asks questions, but maybe he’s at a power level at which his interference can be deniable, or brushed under the rug if needed. Or, if he is higher up, he's considered to be a bit of an odd duck, too enthusiastic, too absorbed in his work, such that his capacity for influence isn't really taken seriously. Besides, he’s so genuine and well-meaning about things that he naturally gets underestimated a lot, which is how he has avoided getting cast out this whole time.
So he’s basically just prancing about being cheerful in Heaven’s offices in the outfit we saw him wear in the show, in all his tan tracksuited, gold nail polished peppiness. (Yes, I love that outfit; no, I will not take arguments. Heaven infiltrator!Crowley is a fashion icon <3) And also, of course, in lovely long flowing robes sometimes because why not, it's Heaven!
He gets to keep up his stars as his main role, and it’s been his favorite thing to do since always, which he tells to anyone in earshot. He’s forever asking if the other angels want to go on little field trips with him to see different star systems or nebulas whenever they need a tuneup, and the other angels are all, “Oh, you know, Crowley and his stars,” like his personal interest in them is weird, or quaint. They humored him at first, and have long since stopped going with him, and the ones of his own rank gossip about how odd it is, a bit, well. Crowley's enthusiasm is undimmed.
Maybe in this AU, Aziraphale has become an archangel by regular promotion - by toeing the line, mostly, but he harbors, secretly (very secretly) his own ideas about how the Supreme Archangel is running things, how Heaven could be made better. A large part of him still believes in the system, though. He figures, if he follows all the norms, goes through the proper channels he’ll make a true change one day. Especially in his new position, which he treats with great sanctity.
But he does have his foibles.
He's been to earth for several stints, and during those stints, however brief each one, he discovered things he likes. His Heavenly office is not blank and white and bare like the others; it has actual—gasp!—material objects in it that he's brought back from his travels on Earth. A plush Persian rug. A heavy oaken desk, complete with Tiffany reading lamp and writing inks and pens. An overstuffed armchair with a cream tartan blanket draped across the back (Heaven does get quite cold, after all). A dancing lady orchid in a hand-turned, hand-painted ceramic planter. A little rack of select Earth wines and aperitifs. An earthenware bowl of fruit. And... books. Books he tries to but occasionally fails to keep contained to one corner, and often rotates out for new ones, and categorically refuses to give up.
(The other archangels try not to go in there much. It gives them the creeps.)
Anyway, long story short, this archangel Aziraphale is... well, Aziraphale, more or less the one we know and love, but maybe with more of a ramrod-straight back, if you will. (And maybe some facial hair. He can have a beard for a bit, maybe, as a treat. But I'm still not sure on that bit.)
The other thing about the archangel Aziraphale is he actually talks to the other angels who are of lower rank than he is. He doesn't treat them the way the rest of the archangels do, at a remove. He wants to know about their goings-on, because he was one of them, once, and he remembers what it was like, and looks on them with a great deal of empathy.
So naturally this puts him into contact with Crowley! Who has absolutely no compunction about inviting Aziraphale (his superior! Crowley, you daredevil!) on a jaunt to visit another little corner of the stars that needs maintenance.
"Oh! A... field trip, you say? To the... the Cosmic Cliffs, you called them? Well! That does sound exciting! I don't suppose I've ever considered it."
"You don't want to," says Crowley, visibly deflating.
"No, no, no! That's not it at all! They sound positively lovely, I'm sure. It's only that I have ever so much work, you see, and so little time in which to do it all."
"The Carina Nebula's worth taking a break for," Crowley says, a little bit of pride edging into his voice. He puts on his best encouraging grin. "C'monnn, Archangel. No one has to know. I certainly won't tell anyone you skived off a day's work to see some stars - oh, they all laugh at me as it is. It'll be our little secret." (If an angel had spoken to, say, Gabriel this way - with such a level of presumption, such a level of intimacy! - they would have been demoted instantly.)
Instead, Aziraphale agrees.
"I say," he breathes, hovering side by side with Crowley and looking at the glittering, twinkling splendor of blue-gold-amber scattered across the vastness of space before them. "I say, this is really quite something you've got here. You've outdone yourself with this one, I imagine."
"Oh, thank you," Crowley says, positively beaming, feathers all aflutter, brown eyes bright with feeling.
"It's beautiful," Aziraphale says.
"It is, isn't it," Crowley agrees. But here's an important little detail: he's not looking at his own creation as he speaks. He's watching Aziraphale watch the stars. It's totally untoward. Totally not befitting their difference in status, or their relative lack of acquaintance. And he totally doesn't care. "Gorgeous," Crowley adds. It just slips out, almost an afterthought, almost under his breath.
And Aziraphale turns to him then, and catches him staring openly.
And there's the start of that.
Also would feature in this AU:
Archangel Aziraphale is the one to introduce Crowley to Earthly things! I think that is so, so fun, and I want to see angel Crowley discover his first bite of dark chocolate truffles or his first sip of Turkish coffee or his first time feeling silk, for example, yes
Enough tension to cut with a knife, we love to see it
Open-secret rendezvous in various corners of space to talk about philosophy!
Crowley dedicating specific stars to Aziraphale (Alpha Centauri!)
The other angels looking on in tacit disapproval but not quite being able to do much about it (...yet)
Archangel Aziraphale and angel Crowley take a vacation business trip to Earth! Includes Aziraphale showing Crowley some of his favorite places; them figuring out what sort of clothes they want to wear on Earth (and pining after each other in them, obviously); Crowley's first time riding in a car and subsequently falling in love with high-speed driving; charming B&Bs with only one bed (!); romantic stargazing from Earth; entirely too much faffing about and not enough Heavenly work getting done at all whatsoever because they're too busy realizing they're in love
A faction of angels try to depose Aziraphale because they think he's gone soft (and, well, he has... soft for a certain starmaking angel) and Aziraphale has to go on the lam on Earth to save himself. Cue romantic scene in which he asks Crowley to come with him and of course Crowley agrees
They go to Earth together and perform a combined miracle to hide themselves from Heaven. Maybe Aziraphale still operates his bookshop, but angel Crowley acquires a plant shop and works part time at a planetarium!
I could go on but this has gotten pretty long!
Thanks for letting me ramble about this AU which I love so much <333
(thought about this. made something)
aziraphale is the thing you need but cant catch. humans thought he didn't exist, didn't know he was there until they went poking around, but he's been here the whole time. he is the gentle breeze tickling your neck on a cold day, the force keeping you on this earth and said earth from spiraling, the gales from the mountaintops and the hand who delivered the apple from newton's tree (only for knowledge, only for them, for Good, only for Good). you need to keep him, you need the air to stay clean so your children can breathe without oxygen tanks and respirators, but without even knowing he's been pulled down, down, down to you. polluted by the factories, life, and retrograde. it's slow damage. will he ever go too far? will he ever let the earth fall? no. it's never been considered. (not if he can help it.) whatever damage he has to take, it's worth it. the humans just have to keep living, and he will have succeeded. it would be fixed. they would fix it. (that's all there is to it, really.)
crowley is the thing you need but you can't keep right. the one you can see, the one you can't see without, and there needn't be a discovery to find him. (he already knows. he just needed to ask the right questions.) he is the ocean's current, the flickering bulb hung in your parents' basement, the needles in the sky and the sweat running down your back. you see him, you bask in him, but you can't keep him. the sun is always meant to fall in the distance, even on the longest of summer days. it can't follow you forever, it wants to follow you forever, but your figure is shouded in shadow and that is the one place it cannot touch. when you're sitting there, brooding in a moonless night that you wrought (you couldn't help it, you had to ask him), you long for the morning. you can't stop and neither can he, but you can't take him for granted until it's gone. you always did, though. not meant, never meant, but there you are.
can you imagine a world without rain? without wine? wood? clouds? words? no, not at all. preposterous, that is, there's never been an earth without the pair of you, never been a chance to learn. the world is you, and the world is him. you can't imagine a place without him--there would be no sight. he can see a life without you (he can't help it) but it is dreary, empty and weightless.
you would expect the rays to follow you, yeah? when you head up to the attic to read, or trudge down to the london underground for a ride, you would think that the warmth would spread. set in your bones, like a stubborn chill. you brace for it, looking for the nearest window Above or Below--but it is just out of reach. silly, you think, to expect the light to defy it's power just for you. it's done it before, mirrors and smoke, but not today. you left, and it remained.
and that's the problem. there is only sulfur in hell, and there are no windows in heaven. you can't ask the sun to rise--he will come when he is ready. he is that sun, and you are the core of the earth. he threatens to get close, step far out of line, but you fall back and continue your dangerous orbit knowing damned well what would happen if you deviate. it's worth the risk--you can't comprehend a life any other way.
you watch, from afar.
you bask, at a distance.
you duel, with invisible swords and imaginary flintlocks.
and you will dance, fingers threatening to lock and millions of miles set in between.
(this has no substance and no rereads. but my feelings are out so it's okay)
Note
I find it so interesting how closely Aziraphale holds onto his identity as an Angel as opposed to Crowley who plays the role of demon but knows very well that it’s just a role and that heaven and hell are just labels. I do think it goes back to their loneliness and sense of belonging, maybe. Because Aziraphale wants (wanted?), far more than Crowley at least, to belong in this whole system even tho he knows he doesn’t. Crowley knows he doesn’t belong in the system but he does want to belong somewhere and that somewhere is, well, with Aziraphale. And it’s so sad because you know they both are outcasts and hurting and only have each other and they both want more but in different directions. UGH! I love them so much. They’ll figure it out, they’ll be okay (<- affirmations)
HELLO WORDS THAT MAKE ME FEEL AND THINK THINGS.
crowley really does fully think it's a job! there's soo much book stuff for that ("Anyway, why're we talking about this good and evil? They're just names for sides. We know that." + Now, as Crowley would be the first to protest, most demons weren't deep down evil. In the great cosmic game they felt they occupied the same position as tax inspectors-doing an unpopular job, maybe, but essential to the overall operation of the whole thing. + "We were only doing our jobs," muttered Crowley. being part of the climax) that I loveee (this is not the point of your ask at all i just love anthony j crowley w all my heart and soul). and that's prob bc they already decided heaven was bullshit before the beginning and has seen and gotten the chance to evaluate both sides firsthand. but it still has to be devastatingly lonely and it isss bc p much everyone in hell is a traumatized betrayed person taking it out on the ppl below them in the command line and deciding that Being Nice is an executable offense so it's tough to find companionship there. and as for humans, do u ever think about how it must have been SO hard for her before she got sunglasses. like obv ppl would react differently to his eyes depending on culture/religion/etc but i'm sure it was often hard to talk to people! and i think enjoying wine and technology and constructing fun things for her job was satisfying enough to get by and having someone who Gets Him (But To A Hard Limit) in aziraphale helped add joy to it all but in s2 they're stagnating and depressed and she LITERALLY wants to belong somewhere and that somewhere is aziraphale......
for aziraphale i think that post-fall heaven had to be like "did you have fun killing your former friends with swords? well you were all chosen to stay angels for a reason but every day you should be terrified that if you step one toe out of line you're unworthy of god's love. lol." (also michael's whole "you've been a bit of a fallen angel" being a valid way for angels to refer to bad behavior) and it makes so much sense for someone to come out of that propaganda feeling the way aziraphale does! grey and i just recorded 2.02 and the ways in which heaven makes aziraphale feel silly and inadequate there but he's still crying his eyes out on that rock at the thought of falling make me soo. and 2.01 aziraphale saying it's nice to tell someone all the good things you've done now that he's not reporting to heaven is soo. showziraphale rlly needs outside reassurance and to belong somewhere and for millennia that somewhere has been heaven despite them all hating his ass. GOD IT'S SO MISERABLE
i think often about how by episode two of the show grey already said "I find it fascinating that both of them are situated as 'They’re different from the other people of their community,' like, Aziraphale is different from the other angels. Crowley is different from the other demons. And what they are most like is each other." well. i also love them and believe that they'll figure it out and be okay! (whether neilman is able to write that in a satisfactory fashion is something i... don't have the highest hopes for, but they will figure it out and be okay regardless of what that guy writes)
Good Omens S2 Last Episode Thoughts
Ok weighing in here as someone who grew up in a super religious community and left it, I have OPINIONS about that last episode. Safe to say it hit me right where I live & there are a LOT of personal opinions/feels in here. Spoilers for Good Omens S2 below!
First off, THE KISS did that really just happen akljfaskldjfkldsajfklasdjkfjasd
But THEN…Aziraphale is so so stupid for choosing heaven over Crowley. But also, I get it because I see my family, my childhood friends, my aunts and uncles, and myself in the characters in this show and I feel so torn because I lived it. I feel that part of my life in Aziraphale’s struggle. How do you give up everything you know for something new and unknown? It’s not rocket science to understand why someone would stay in a toxic place, because when toxic is all you know then it’s what’s safe and safety looks like toxicity because you can’t see what safety really looks like anymore.
And underneath it all is his desire to help and be good and fix people and oh my poor broken angel, you haven’t realized that if people don’t want to be fixed, then you can’t fix them. He’s had all this time to figure it out and just hasn’t yet and part of me wants to tell him it’s not his fault because when something is that deeply ingrained in you, you can’t just forget it. You just can’t. But at the same time, he’s had so many opportunities to change! I wish he could’ve, and I think he’ll get there eventually. But he’ll have to reject something that is such an intrinsic part of him to get it and that struggle will tear him apart. So that’s probably what’s next for him. He’s got CHOICES to make.
And Crowley! Oh this poor demon. I know what it feels like to leave a religion. That scene where Crowley’s looking at Job going ‘why does he get to ask questions and I don’t?’ DID THINGS to my soul ugh. Even when you know you are leaving something that isn’t good for you, it doesn’t stop being a safety net in your head and to leave that is just…horrible. But to find another way to live- that sucks too. Unlike someone who leaves one life and embraces another fluidly, sometimes it takes longer because you have to make it yourself. So when Crowley said ‘I go with hell…as far as I can.’ I felt that too. I remember wondering if life would ever feel normal again. But Crowley did make his own life. He gets to choose what he believes in and make life work on his terms. I love that for him. To see what measures up and what doesn’t. What works and what doesn’t. Who he lets in and who he doesn’t. Oh I love that. But at the same time, he’s so afraid of the fragile bit of peace he’s made. He needs to know that a little bit of heaven and hell mixed in with his world won’t destroy it, and that despite all his best efforts he can’t block them out. But he’s been so hurt by both sides that he shuts them out entirely, and fails to keep what he’s made in the process. Same as Aziraphale, he has to learn to let scary things in if he wants to keep what he’s made.
And in the end I guess I just have to say I see why they both made their choices. Neither of them could deny those entrenched parts of themselves, they had to follow their own paths because those parts were their identities. I’m confident they’ll find their way back to each other. All of that to say I FELT that last episode and WILL be rewatching this show because it’s just so good.
