Aziraphale, the bad guy
Tumblr media
The thing is that Aziraphale as a bunch of character traits is the secretly evil person in so much fiction. Maybe that's why so many people want him to be the bad guy? He is bookish, well dressed, somewhat old fashioned, clever, well spoken, classical music fan, a food snob, doesn't do so well with banter and other generally expected communication skills. He's an introvert and only shines next to people (one demon really) he knows well, otherwise he can be kinda awkward (fangirling over Shakespeare anyone?). He is the prototype of the brainy, antisocial professor that wants to bring down the world and everyone in it. And this is why I ADORE him. Because he is all the things above and yet he is not evil. And yes he is an actual angel and no that also does not mean he is secretly awful. He is just imperfect. And that is so wonderfully fucking normal I will never get over it and will revere @neil-gaiman for this forever and ever.

I hate when people mistake aziraphales naiveness with stupidity
HES A IMMORTAL ANGEL THAT LIVED ON EARTH FOR 6000 YEARS! He could call you stupid on all the languages in the world (except French)
that’s all I have to say on that matter.

Reading through @badaziraphaletakes inspired me to make a post about reasons:
Why people tend to choose Crowley of Aziraphale, and, consequently, think Aziraphale is bad
This might be a long post, i'll cover some topics and i might get all over the place at some point! But please be patient! Can i get into it?
Inversion of values
When first watching Good Omens, you might expect a strong inversion of values, that Heaven is bad and Hell is good, angels are the oppresors and demons the victims
It is mostly religiously (religious trauma) motivated, aka "christianity is a fucking bullshit" motivated, to expect seeing the ones who calls themselfs good (Heaven, who we interpret as Christian religious figures) be actually bad (wich, in real life, they tend to be) and, the ones they cast out as evil and sinful (Hell, wich we interpret in this case as anyone the church calls sinful, like the queer comunity) to be good and innocent and just different, it makes us feel emphatic for them, even seeing that they are, indeed, bad
I believe some people just dont want to accept it, they want to believe the angels are inherently bad and the demons just questioned their bad ways
But they arent, if anything ALL angels and demons are naturally good and innocent, "oh but Gabriel!" He was naturally good, we saw it, the same with Michael and Uriel too, they're all just tainted by the strong grip Heaven demands for them to have; in episode 1 season 2, we see both Crowley (as starmaker) and Aziraphale being totally innocent and adorable, they're good by nature, no one in the story is actually evil
When this inversion of values we wish for isnt fulfilled, it might cause an annoyance, i know a lot of people who dont accept it, and just make it up because... well is expected!
Queerness
This was originally taken from a post of "Bad Aziraphale Takes"
Crowley is "more queer" than Aziraphale, at least thats how people see it as, in fics too, how many times Crowley gender is explored, with pronouns and labels and identities? While the more i saw for Aziraphale was a vulva or they/them pronouns, and never in a human au! Aziraphale is depicted and seem as a cisgender male
I have seem even people saying Aziraphale have internalized homophobia! I- how??
Found them! @theelastword made an ask on the "bad Aziraphale takes" blog that inspired this bit <3 thank you love
Need for a villain and favorites
As we saw, people that hate Aziraphale choose to see Heaven as evil, as the villain, and that is also followed by many people who dont hate Aziraphale! Well, might i say that... we dont have a real villain in Good Omens? The angels arent evil for wishing to follow what they believe to be God's plan, nor for deminishing humanity- but i'm getting ahead of myself here!
The need to see Heaven as inhetently bad, the big bad villain, makes people see Aziraphale, going back there "freely", hurting Crowley's feelings, saying Hell/demons are the bad guys (wich they ARE?? There is not an inversion of values!) As him being evil, as him going to the side of the villain instesd of choosing Crowley, going back to CROWLEY'S abusers, not his, not theirs, Crowley
I do believe humans have a natural need to have favorites, when you're a kid is always "wich caracther of this cartoon am i?" and later is always "wich do i relate to more? Wich do i like more?", and people choose Crowley for all those reasons above and probally some personal ones too
So! As a small conclusion:
People choose to prefer Crowley, they choose to see Crowley as better because he's a "good demon", he's the victim that fell from Heaven and hates Hell, he's the queer caracther, he's kind and genuine and helps Aziraphale and have a car he loves
Because of the idea that Aziraphale is: A) opposite to Crowley; B) an Angel! (The abusers! The bad guys! The evil!); C) a BAD angel for that matter, he's selfish and mundane and comes across as rude to Crowley (because he acts so fucking autistic too!); people tend to DISLIKE Aziraphale, small simple minded people, but people nonetheless
I know the whole post is a bit over the place, it might sound confusing here and there, but i really wanted to put all this together to try and understand why people hate Aziraphale
I though maybe this can give a small input on why people think like that, it sures helps me to understand how they think that and what they mean by their terrible takes! I guess is mostly them being naive
Oh! You know how in the 2000's the media was demonizing femininity by having blond, pink, feminine villains in their high school romances? How we, to this day, tend to see feminine girls as fake, vulgar, naive, etc? How most teen girls go through a "not like other girls phase" because of that?
Same principle! Is the same reason for why they see Heaven and Aziraphale as evil
I hope someone can appreciate this lil silly thoughs put together <3

Aziraphale, to the Matatron: I don’t want to go to heaven! (that’s a direct quote btw)
Metatron: If you do, you can be with Crowley, though! And you’ll finally be able to love him without the abusive restraints of our fucked up societal norms for once!
Victim-blaming bigots: See, he WANTED to go to heaven he’s so evil! He was totally not coaxed inside it with the promise of freedom only to be trapped again! He’s evil! 😈
@badaziraphaletakes I think this is a #badassaziraphaletake but I’ll leave that up to you to decide.

In case we needed any more proof of the ableism in the anti-Aziraphale crowd...
Got this lovely string of comments on my video talking about anti-Autistic prejudice in the GO fandom. Ironically, in the process of trying to say none of the Aziraphale hate is based in ableism, the commenter perfectly proved my point.

I rub my hands together..
Because I am having more Thoughts.
Big thanks to @badaziraphaletakes for pointing out the fucking obvious to me.
We talk a lot in this fandom about trauma, how Heaven and Hell leaves different kinds of psychological, and physical scars on our angel and demon. Mostly though, we focus on the psychological damage that comes from Heaven and the physical torture that comes from Hell. I am of the belief that Heaven and Hell drop a lot of both on their environs, but that's a post for a different day.
Trauma isn't that simple, though. It doesn't matter what kind you face, your reaction to it is going to fall under animal instinct. What is truly horrifying is the realization that Crowley's and Aziraphale's gut reactions are completely the opposite of what their Bosses are.
When Crowley feels like he, or Aziraphale is in danger, instead of fangs out, he's looking for the nearest escape route. The easiest way to make the problem go away. He runs away -- but of course he runs away. If he doesn't run away, he's going to be tortured. He is going to receive physical damage for making a mistake. So flight is the best option. The ability to get away, to think of how to avoid that pain, one way or another, is so Crowley-coded. I've always stated that Crowley is the strategist, the one who makes the complicated plans. He takes himself away from the problem, so he can analyze the problem. He runs away, and then he turns back. Once he has enough physical safe space, he can sit back and look to see what can be done.
He never had a chance to do that really in the last days of Armageddon, because Hell was nipping right on his heels and he had to keep retreating. Until he was put in a corner, and then you saw the Serpent come out. His fear of pain lasts until he is more afraid of losing his life, or Aziraphale. For example, the bucket of holy water. Walking into a consecrated church. Walking into a burning bookshop. The M25 - he literally drove Right Into The Fire, even with Hastur there because he had to get to Aziraphale and he had to survive driving through a ring of fire. Crowley runs from pain, but that doesn't stop him from attacking if he's got no other options.
Aziraphale is the opposite. His trauma is one I am well acquainted with, and that is psychological abuse, and torture. Don't let it fool you - just because you aren't having someone hurt you with a screwdriver doesn't mean it's any less devastating to your body, much less your mind. What Heaven does is use Fear. Fear like a scalpel, or a baseball bat to your knees. The Fear of Falling, the Fear of being considered Unworthy of God's love. The Fear of being considered less than your fellow angels, although you'll always be lesser than archangel. Fear of being yourself, fear of being anything less than perfect. All the fucking time. Nothing can save you, but us, and if you turn against us, you're screwed. Aziraphale, though, he doesn't run. He's never run. He's a Guardian. A Principality. He held a flaming sword and he held it well. Oh, he will bald-face lie to God, to archangels, to Crowley, but he doesn't run. He will try to find a way out of it with the most convoluted stories. He'll smile, look pleasant and distant and not quite there. Don't notice me. Don't worry about me. I'm not doing anything wrong for you to hurt me. Only thing he fears more than Heaven is Hell, and he's not even scared of Hell as a concept, but as a fact of Hell will hurt Crowley. Hell will take Crowley away. Hell will reach up and snatch Crowley away in a heartbeat and there isn't anything Aziraphale can do about it. Fear, fear, fear. Yet he doesn't run. He fights. He fights with words, and when there's nothing left with that, he fights with his wits, and then when he has no more left of that - he stands his ground with a weapon. A sword. A halo. His own physical body, if necessary.
Where am I going with all this?
That Season 3 is going to be You Reap What You Sow. Crowley is trapped in his misery and he can't run from it, because Aziraphale is in danger. Aziraphale is trapped and afraid, and he can't do anything about it because they'll hurt Crowley. What neither Heaven or Hell has realized yet - and I especially mean Heaven in this juncture -- is that they haven't given Crowley or Aziraphale any choices. They've been trapped in a corner by both of their abusers.
Their abusers who have never seem to learn the lesson that if you trap Crowley and Aziraphale in a corner, they're going to turn around and bite. Bite as hard as they possibly can - just to protect one another.

The first time he said "I forgive you", Crowley had just called him stupid. For wanting to try to get heaven to stop Armageddon. (And let's not forget that Crowley's alternate suggestion, running away to Alpha Centauri, would result in them both dying.)
The second time he said it, Crowley had called him an idiot, kissed him without consent (as far as we know - unless they worked out some kind of plan beforehand), and made the hardest decision Aziraphale's ever made a million times harder (again, as far as we know).
"Didn't do anything to him that would need to be forgiven" my ass.

One of the worst takes I wanted to share with @badaziraphaletakes
But suddenly I thought I couldn't agree more. And it's more like a bad Crowley take.
"Crowley will never love Aziraphale the way he used to love him before."
Yeah, cause they will love each other so hard like never before.

Hello everyone, I am still being harassed!
I have made a similar post to his before, but unfortunately the issue has not resolved itself—it's gotten worse. No matter how much I try to ignore the fandom, I keep getting attacked, insulted, degraded, and more.
This is not a call-out post, this is not about "fandom drama", this is about real, living people being bullied and harassed for no reason. I am not the only one and many have both the fandom and tumblr for good. No matter how much you disagree with someone's interpretation of a show, abusing them for it is never justified.
Before I explain further, I want to show y'all an excerpt from the official tumblr community guidelines/the rules they are breaking:
Tumblr media
My posts are being rebglogged, screenshotted, and reposted in abusive ways. I am openly being targeted, harassed, bullied, and verbally abused. I am also receiving intense hate via anonymous asks.
I have blocked as many people as possible, I have locked my blog so no one without an account can see it, I block every new account that is openly involved with this, I have restricted replies to people that have been following me for a minimum of one week, I have been deleting every anon hate I received—but nothing helped.
I have already reported them to tumblr but the moderators have yet to take action (not a surprise). So if you have any interesting in myself and other people not being subjected to bullying, I highly recommend you block the following blogs.
The most prominent and active ones are
@/aziraphaledefensesquad and @/badaziraphaletakes
If you do not want to block everyone on the list, I am strongly encouraging you to at least block these two accounts since they are providing a public platform for the harassment and abuse.
This list is compiled by checking the tags and reblogs on posts harassing me to see who interacts with them and if/how they participate in it. If you ended up on this list despite not being a aprt of the abuse, please do not hesitate to reach out to me/have someone else reach out to me so I can remedy my mistake.
I am not posting this as some sort of "revenge" or to start a fight. I am posting this because I want people to be able to take preemptive measures and block who they want to block.
If you have been blocked my be, I am kindly asking you to stop circumventing the block feature and/or using other measured to access my posts.
You can find the block list under the cut. If you think there is another account to add, feel free to message me or comment on this post.
edit: Said blogs have found this post, and while this was not breaking any community guidelines, I have decided to delete the list. If you would like to see it, my dms are open.

@badaziraphaletakes I was scrolling through your blog and I think you might have missed this one. Unfortunately I can't reblog because the OP blocked me after the first reblog, which is a total and utter shame, lemme tell you, a total and utter shame. Feel free to use only the shots relating to the original post if you want to add your take.
For everyone who might feel confused by my "I don't mean to be mean", let me clarify that for you: I meant to be mean.
