Broke: I don't read as much as I used to.
Woke: I read twice as much as I used to, plus now I can tailor the experience to my exact preferences.
#I've come to realise in recent years#that the reason I don't read original fiction as often anymore isn't because I've somehow lost the motivation to read#I read all the damn time#I just don't like how when I try to read original fiction it's become a gamble#Even if I only ever got books free from the library I only end up enjoying what#5 out of 10 books if I'm lucky?#Because all I can go off of is the blurb on the back#I remember making threads on forums and reddit and stuff asking for recommendations for books that don't have romance#And so many answers would involve ''well it has romance BUT'' like bitch did I stutter???#But with fanfics they almost always explicitly state if there's romance or not#And I can filter for that#I can filter for all sorts of niche preferences#To my heart's desire#So if original fiction and libraries in general had a tagging system as extensive as AO3#Then honestly I'd probably read a lot more original fiction#And like of course it helps that I already know and like the characters with fanfics but that can actually backfire sometimes#if the characterization doesn't match my interpretation#But even then people often tag for certain depictions or behaviours or actions so I can still filter a lot of them out#Not perfectly but better than with original fiction#So for me the lack of a good filter system is the main barrier when it comes to reading original fiction#And I don't see original fiction as being somehow better than fanfiction tbh#Random#Idk why I suddenly had to make this post with a novel worth of tags on it but oh well here you go lol

Hello helloooo friend! Hi! I just wanted to say that I'll be going around and asking people about QSMP characters to avoid mischaracterization of said characters (in analysis, fics, and just overall fan interpretations). So if you're cool with it, can I ask you about the French streamers?
Like, can you tell me the mischaracterization you often see regarding their characters and how they actually are? I mean, ANY facts about them would be very very cool to know! I love all of them and I would really like to know more about them since I can't really watch everyone, ya kno?
Yes I would love to :D ! But also, keep in mind, I'm not immune to a bit of mischaracterization (that's how you write that right ?), sometimes I probably do a little bit, though I try my best not to. I have to admit, I don't see a lot, or just little things, and mostly from the english side of the community, cause over here with the french we are a really small part of the overall fandom, so I don't have a lot of interactions, AND it's our first (ever) smp like that (semi rp etc...), we never had that over here in France, it's a new thing both for us and the ccs, so we are getting our footing. But here we go I do have some things I can say : (wrote a fricking novel holy)
q!Baghera Jones : I see a lot of people characterize her as this hyper competent investigator that knows everything etc... In a way she is, she is a good investigator, and is always eager to solve the mysteries of the island ; What people miss most of the time is that she is also (it's not mutually exclusive) a Goofball : She sings randomly, she walks on mines and jumps off buildings willingly for the lols, some people say she witholds information, most of the time she actually just Forgor. Something that people do get most of the time is that she genuinely is really empathetic : She loves Walter Bob, two days ago she talked about how Cucurucho may be manipulated, she is worried about Quackity, about Cellbit, Foolish, Jaiden etc... And outside of petty rivalry (mostly with Forever, BBH, Etoiles, and a bit Cellbit) she is not a vengeful person at all. She is very understanding. Oh and almost forgot : She is surprisingly insightful ; She guessed what was happening to Cellbit as one of the firsts, she immediatly figured Gegg out the first day she met Slime, ElQuackity is VERY obviously another person than Quackity at first glance etc...
q!Etoiles : There was for some time a bit of mischaracterization in the way people saw him as a bloodthirsty killing machine, though it is fading steadily as we speak ; He is a really nice person that lifts up others, gift them things whenever he can, cares about the eggs, and is always reactive when it comes to saving or helping others. Also, he is a badass in the eyes of everyone (ccs and fandom) but people have a way to write that in fics that doesn't really match him : They write a badass and dark character that is mostly silent and cool ; Etoiles is NOT that (he is badass yes but not much the rest), he SAYS he is that, that he is "dark, and broody, and mysterious", but the guy is always cracking jokes, about others, about himself, he is very self-aware of his problems (social and health related) and likes to joke about it because "it puts smiles on the faces of people" (his way of cheering people up most of the time : "You are not useless, you put smiles on my and the people's faces, and that wonderful"). The moments that CAN be a bit dark is when he is asking for a fight ; most of the time it's goofy, but then there is moments like the dinner party when the codes revealed themselves, where he will be saying while everyone panics "Yeah... Yeah.. FINALLY ! FINALLY !!" and you realise he is not to be trifled with. He aslo tends to blame himself when something wrong happens ; to him, HE is the one that misplayed, that made a mistake.
q!Aypierre : Some people could see him as a relatively chill dude ; he talks calmly, never screams and very rarely raises his voice, but he is NOT chill : He is the most gremlin of the french, his favorite past-time in all the smps he's been in is pranking and breaking the servers : Two days ago in his 24 hour stream, he broke in the federation base three times, exploded a bunch of stuff in there, tortured Foolish alongside BBH, summoned lightning to make Foosh and BBH believe Gegg is still alive in front of his infinite Gegg generator, rickrolled Cucurucho etc... He is a every ingenuous guy with ways to build factories of everything. Most people, out of the french, would fear Etoiles because he is always begging for a fight, and fought and won against the code several times, but he is a nice guy, who they probably SHOULD fear, is Aypierre, this guy can be EVIL at times ; He loves contracts and deals, and using those against the others. He is not all evil though. He does care about Pomme, the french, and is willing to help others when they need him, though he likes to make exchanges.
q!Antoine Daniel : Antoine is probably the hardest to write or get when you are not used to him. He has such a way of speaking and a weird twisted humor that to someone not french, and not watching his streams regularly, it's REAL hard to get him right. He is an apreciator of dark humor and cynicism ; Joking about Bobby in front of Pomme is an example, though he is starting to be more compassionate about the eggs than he was at the beginning of his journey on the smp. Probably because of one of my posts and some others, a lot of people see him as incredibly paranoïd, and for a time he was, though he said himself (both in and out of character) that it was starting to get better because people came talked to him about it, there IS still remains though. What's interesting is that he can be both paranoïd, AND incredibly insightful : His takes are either the rambling of a madman, or scarily on point. Though he is rarely willing to help others (both because of his next to level 0 skills in minecraft and general air of "I don't care"), he is always on alarm and willing to help when it comes to the eggs, multiple times he ironically is one of the most reactive ones when it comes to realise there is danger or a problem for the eggs ; Though he is relatively self-centered, he is very compassionate and attentive of the eggs, with Pomme potentially being the person he trusts most. (everytime he acts aloof and cynical on his stream, to then immediatly worry about Pomme's well-being warms my heart.)
q!Kamet0 : AHAHAHAHAH ahAHaHhah, ahahah... ahah.. ah. oh. (he left for cigarretes)
(HOLY SHIT I WROTE A NOVEL. Sorry, didn't excpect to have that much to say. But here you go, hope that helps.)

My favorite thing to write when it comes to the 2012 boys is writing when they snap.
You'd expect Mikey to scream and shout, no, my boy is emotionally intelligent, he's more prone to being angry and calm. You have no idea how scary it is to be able to do that. And already did it plenty of times before.
"THIS IS FOR MY BROTHER" he says as he throws a couch at Rahzar.
He's thinking clearly enough to throw a literal couch, that is scary.
What's more scary as well is that while he's calm and mad he's the type that has tears flowing through his eyes because he's also the type of person to cry while mad.
And it doesn't make him look weak it makes him even more fucking terrifying.
And he has a patient of a saint when it comes to anger, vro.
I can compare him to a ranging storm.
Raph snapping removes any and all restrictions he has. He would attack like a wild animal, anything and everything around him would get destroyed. He's easily angered out of all of them but when he truly snaps his morals are thrown out the window, which is, by the way, the only other reason he hasn't killed a man yet.
And after that, like fire, his fuel runs out and he will be hit with intense guilt, no matter what. He would just, collapse. He gone. He just staring at a wall.
And we already saw that happen with the ending of season 2, my mans was so mad he was about to attack the closest person, whicj was Mikey, who luckily calmed him down enough.
He shuts down and focused on caring for Leo because he couldn't do that when he saw their father essentially get flushed down the drain.
The way he snaps is like striking a match and watching it die out.
He's explosive and self destructive.
When Donnie does it, it's a whole different ball game. Sure he's prone to bursts of anger when people get to his nerves, but when he snaps, he gets tunnel vision. His anger isn't exactly explosive like Raph or a storm like Mikey's.
He has plans.
Unlike Raph who gets so mad he loses morality, my boy says "fuck morality we ball" and is very ready to murder someone because they threatened to dissect him.
As if he didn't already gets threatened to be turned into turtle sashimi by, i dont know, Xever.
My mans zeroed in on what Don Vizioso wanted to do with him. I think he snapped at that time and wanted revenge because he's helpless when it happened. He didn't want to feel that way again.
He makes meticulous plans, i mean, he made that flowchart of plans with April, he must've thought of the routes and possibilities already.
He's smart when he snaps and it clouds his judgement because he gets too emotional (something i really appreciate with how he was characterized since often times, smart characters are boiled down to being "logical" and "cold")
Anger and a 50 step plan to murder a man is a bad combination but he makes it work.
If Leo didn't stop him, well... There's one less crime lord to worry about.
Speaking of Leo.
Oh this is what I love the most.
I feel like he would be dead silent when he snaps.
Just nothing. Not even a scream of anger. He's so full of negative emotions that it registers as nothing.
If Mikey's was scary, he's scarier. Because at least Mikey shows emotions even if he's calm. He wants you to know he's mad, but Leo?
It takes a lot to make him snap and something inside him just cracks. Fuck emotions, fuck thinking, all that is in his brain right now is cold rage. For the demon skayer fans out there, imagine Tanjiro's fight with Daki, imagine that were Leo instead. He's so mad my boi isn't breathing. He's deadset on turning you into a news paper headline.
Donnie, Mikey and Raph can be calmed.
Not Leo.
Nothing is gonna stop Leo but himself.
Of course that's just my personal interpretation of the characters. I don't even know if this is accurate or whatnot. I just really love these boys.

Kat’s Character Overanalysis of Murasaki
Tumblr media
⚠️ WARNING ⚠️
The content below may exhibit multiple instances of confirmation bias due to over a year of brain rotting.
Do not proceed if you dislike excessive analysis of characters that only appear in official tweets and random merchandise.
I treat this guy like an oc so don’t be mean to me ok 💔 just my headcanons and personal observations!!!
Viewer discretion is advised…
Ok so I'm going to start with the basic stuff (i.e. inkipedia)
Tumblr media
From 2015-2018(?) Murasaki was the drummer for the band Squid Squad. He was the youngest member of the group.
Tumblr media
While this excerpt from Inkipedia may seem small, there are a lot of traits described here that can be further analyzed (if you have nothing better to do)
The Squid Research Lab describes him as rough around the edges.
The term "rough around the edges" is used to describe something that has small imperfections, but is generally good. When describing a person it can mean someone who is unsophisticated or impolite. In this instance, "rough around the edges" could be describing Murasaki's drumming skills as he's said to have potential, but he also needs some practice.
this characterization was probably made to resemble his appearance as well! (sea urchins don't have very smooth edges...)
2. Murasaki is referred to as a wild child.
A "wild child" is usually someone (likely a young person) who is headstrong, rebellious, and/or uncontrollable. To me, this info matches nicely with the impolite interpretation of the phrase "rough around the edges."
3. From here, it sort of goes on about his playing which I sort of addressed in the first point. Basically, he has a natural gift in drumming because he has a good sense of rhythm, and despite lacking in technique, he always tries his best.
4. He is prone to crying
The Squid Research Lab states that he could be caught crying during a drum solo which goes to show how much effort he puts into his playing :). I feel like this part tends to override his other traits in fan stuff (if he gets included at all). I personally view this as a subversive aspect of his personality. Normally he has an abrasive personality because of the rebelliousness and lack of manners, but he is also a sentimental person and his emotions are expressed through tears even if he isn’t sad (samee). Think of how urchins have a spiky hard external shell that hides soft uni inside of it ok...
5. Energetic
I know the energy think is probably referring to his playing style, but I picture him to be a fidgety person who doesn't like to stand still. I guess it matches with the wild child thing.
6. He's the youngest
Expains the previous behavior. rude + rebellious + more talent than practice. teenager.
Moving onto other sources! Bye Inkipedia...
Tumblr media
Here is the original japanese text of the Squid Research Lab info on twitter. Yes, I know google translate isn't that accurate, but I think it's interesting and deepl says something similar as well.
7. Ignoring the strange grammar, Murasaki is additionally described as mischievous (やんちゃ?). Definition: playful in a naughty or teasing way or troublesome/irritating.
I guess this was translated into the wild child in the english version because I'm assuming the term in japanese refers to more childish behavior. I think the word mischievous is easier to understand though since I've never heard the term wild child before. Anyway, he's silly.
8. I sort of glossed over this in the english version but apparently he can take the lead when it matters most. In english, the phrasing kinda made this confusing. I thought they were just saying words lol. Anyway, this ties in with him trying his best while in the band + being compassionate/sentimental.
Tumblr media
topic-adjacent kinda. I've seen people interpret this in a sort of sad way, but I interpret this as him being mischievous! I think he's walking towards them to scare them. The little star next to his head reminds me of the animal crossing mischief emote.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
another bonus thing because it shows that hes silly. a silly goose. I think he likes to doodle.
Tumblr media
God I haven't even gotten to the splatune articles yet...
yeah this kinda repeats what I already said but here it says his playing fits well with Ichiya. I think that both of them are kinda similar. Both are sort of lacking in technique but make up for it in other areas. Both have ADHD (lying). To me, Murasaki is if an asshole turned out to be kind, and Ichiya is if a kind person turned out to be an asshole. #crazy
Tumblr media
Splatune 1! No more numbered list I forgot what number I was on :)
Cool and edgy urchin
I have no idea what that means. Ok.
Cool means cool.
I don’t know if they mean edgy in the internet way because ???... Anyway, edgy can mean: 1. tense, nervous, or irritable, 2. trend setting, daring, or provocative. I think the word choice was for the sake of an urchin pun.
I think they meant to convey the second definition by saying hes cool and unconventional (I don't think it makes sense to say someone is cool and nervous in the same sentence). Kind of matches with being rough around the edges. I like to apply the first definition sometimes though. I like to stress him out.
he boldly pushes up to the front like a blaster
information about his drum playing is information about his personality! this relates to his previously described energetic playing. I like how this sort of frames him as unusual compared to other drummers. It shows how his playing style relates to his character... energetic, headstrong, he can lead the way if necessary. all things previously stated.
Tumblr media
mean to him :(
I think this is trying to say how the others keep him around even though he doesn't match the theme. They keep him around because he looks cool? (this information is probably useless because machine translator. grain of salt)
very brief splatune 3 cameo
Tumblr media
can drink in bars now? (old...)
likes to talk in circles (old...)
Tumblr media
looks depressed now. aware of the horrors... evil leg bouncer...
thats it for official stuff i think. I like to add on bonus traits to him during the front roe era, but yeag ✌️

As a longtime fan, I’ve noticed that your characterization of Tom has changed over time (Tom in Amulet and TMWWBK resemble each other greatly but not so much the Tom in October or to an even greater extent Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus)
Is that the result of the various AUs you guys have built? Or is it that your interpretation of Tom has changed as you’ve worked with him?
Both?
The thing about Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus especially, well, all fics then (Androids, October, etc.), is that they were intended to be extremely AU.
In Lily, right away we're told this is a parallel universe that has marked differences, and that Tom Riddle is not acting like the Tom Riddle that Uncle Death was more familiar with. He had a different number of Horcruxes than expected, he had a radically different childhood in keyways, he's recognizably Tom Riddle but supposed to be very different. This is also why Lily is, and you note it is, the radically different child over there (though even there, modern fic Tom Riddle and Wizard Lenin aren't all that dissimilar for all they look like it on the surface level).
October and Androids are similar, where I had "giant justification of why characters are different don't bother me, readers" and then we went on our merry way where Tom Riddle had enough of a different past or enough of a different something that he wasn't supposed to be canon.
They're vastly AU fics and intended to be vastly AU where I run around waving "this is not canon" flags.
But at the time, most of my thoughts on HP were, "I like the idea of X thing, canon was weird about it, I will make it even more of X thing and justify myself so readers don't bother me". I hadn't gotten into the heretical weeds yet.
More recent fics there's definitely been both a) years worth of thinking about this entirely too much in the backdrop b) a shift in priorities writing where I no longer give a fuck about being complained to by readers because I didn't match fanon or accepted canon.
This means that in The Man Who Would Be King and the like @therealvinelle and I think a little more in lines of "how would Tom as we understand him respond to X, Y, and Z" while also not having to either devote or drop things that "readers will question why things aren't explicitly how we expect them in canon and if Tom doesn't have at least one 'ew, love' speech then I will get annoying reviews".
So, it's a mix of everything you mentioned, thoughts changed, thought about this way too much, priorities changed in writing and what I want to focus on with characters, and the examples you give are either very very AU things in which crazy things happen that drastically change a character or else slightly more in line with canon if with strange things happening.

HOW OLD WOULD MK1 SHANG TSUNG BE IN HUMAN YEARS?
Tumblr media
We all know that in most games Shang Tsung is 1,000 years old but keeps his youthful appearance by absorbing souls. As a result, he appears much younger than he actually is. In the new timeline, his age is unknown. All we know is that Liu Kang forged his destiny to be that of a common Outworlder and he most likely doesn't know how to use souls to make himself younger. ①
But how old do you think MK1 Shang would be if his life span were the same as that of a normal human from Earthrealm? Let’s analyze it.
EARLY MK GAMES:
Shang Tsung first appeared as an elderly man in his mid-eighties (Mortal Kombat 1992). Then he became a younger man in his late-twenties to early-thirties (Mortal Kombat II 1993). According to GamePro magazine in 1993(4), the Mortal Kombat II version of Shang Tsung was 19 years old. In Deadly Alliance, he is roughly 45. ②
MK1 2023:
Depending on the timeline, Shang Tsung resides from the Outworld or Earthrealm, making him either an Outworlder or a Titan, but his age remains consistent across both. He doesn't have a birthdate. ③
->
To determine his human age in MK1, we can either rely on our own speculations or seek assistance from AI. Please consider that Shang Tsung is a fictional character from a video game, and determining his precise age is going to be hard. Let's start by making an estimate. If I were to guess based on his physical and facial appearance, I would say he appears to be in his mid to late 30s. Despite his vitality, there are subtle hints of age lines and wrinkles. Analyzing how his wrinkles have developed, it would be fair to suggest an age range of 35-38.
Tumblr media
He has a mature countenance, characterized by prominent facial features and a weathered complexion.
->
Now let’s have a look at what the AI has to offer. For that, I will be using the websites howolddoyoulook.com and age.toolpie.com to confirm if the two sites match the age analysis. Remember that things as light or different emotions can be detected by AI and decrease or increase the age.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both AIs detect him to be in his early to mid-30s.
->
In addition, I asked ChatGPT:
Tumblr media
ChatGPT agreed with my estimate and said Shang Tsung appears to be in his mid to late thirties.
->
I also tried to ask Redditors what they think:
Tumblr media
WELL, I SAID I TRIED. After waiting 9 days that is the only coherent answer I got:
Tumblr media
->
In conclusion, even though his exact age remains a subject of speculation and interpretation, a compelling case can be made for Shang Tsung being in his 30s in the events of Mortal Kombat 1 (2023), my opinion being that he is in his mid to late thirties.
And how old is Shang Tsung in your opinion?

Yo THIS is what I'm talking about new interpretations of Deadpool treating him like a fucking bugs bunny character. Deadpool doesn't just bounce back as if nothing happens, he doesn't "not feel the pain ad lacerations" and he sure as fuck doesn't just stand back watching people fuck with him.
And even more that that? He's not fucking stupid.
Listen I have my problems with the Deadpool (2008) run but this shit compared with the rest he had this last ten years of writing is fucking exasperating.
It doesn't matter how hot or famous, or heroic the person is. Wade does not like being like lied to and he doesn't fucking tolerate being toyed either. Specially after all the shit he's been through.
So tell me, why the fuck, now characters can just walk all over him and the only thing he does is make a bad reference? I'm so sick of this, so, so sick. He's a fucking human being.
Flesh and bone and feelings. And it's so fucking disrespectful after all those years of characterization and shit he's been through, writer's decided to fucking disregard all that that just to make their shitty jokes, that' aren't even funny.
Not only is a from a horrible taste, it doesn't make any goddamn sense. He's a mercenary and a good one, like scarily good. And it's so weird to me how out of nowhere people's just decided he's not dangerous anymore and instead of just being chill around him, this just took as an advantage to treat him like shit. And this is even more maddening when you realize (bad writing or not) he's fucking trying to be better.
I like this part of the run of 2008. Because it's just make sense, of course! The X-Men hates Deadpool. He was literally a guy who was paid to kill them who knows how many times, he's annoying, bitchy and has no respect for any of them, not even mentioning the weird relationship he has with Scott's son and how crossed them more times than the dignity of the whole team should bare. Deadpool had it coming the hate he got from the X-men, hell, and this was them being patient.
Now, even with them hating Wade, the X-Men was being extremely careful. That's the fucking mercenary Deadpool, you don't just give him shit and act like nothing happened. They're annoyed, angry, and hostile and yet not out of the line.
Tumblr media
And even so
Tumblr media
And I'm not saying I want him to be violent (even though he is still violent but now is just for 'hahaha isn't he craaaazyyy??? 🤪🤪' jokes). Wade has been at war with his violent tendencies since ever and I'm happy too see him kinda overcoming that over the years.
But fucking hell the last issues are fucking pushing it.
I mean what is this?
Look at this shit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then he just????
Tumblr media
???????
Yeah Sure guys yall just fucking opened my guts up, but now let's just patch up and talk like palls because apparently my nervous system doesn't fucking work.
LOOK AT THIS FUCKIN BULLSHIT
Tumblr media
"Hey Jessica" Bitch where's your backbone?
That's Jessica Jones they're not even friends!
This is how Wade reacted to Domino, his actual friend trying to fuck him over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like what the fuck happened to him? It's like they don't even consider him fucking human, he dies but doesn't deal with the after match, he has his guts exploded but whatever what is pain? He's going to shook of with a silly joke 🤪, he has no friends, he doesn't get offended, he doesn't get angry, he just there to suck the heroes dick and act like a lost puppy.
I'm fucking done man.

What's your favorite piece of Addams Family media? P.S. be warned I have a list of all my burning questions about your amazing fic
The original comics featured in The New Yorker and in compilations over time by Charles Addams are my favorite. I write Wednesday just slightly more in line with that interpretation than the 2022 series in CftF (including her extra toe 😘).
Layla doesn't know how write anything short, so here's more on my opinions of The Addams Family interpretations over time:
I frequently watch the ’64 Addams family television series, have been through it in order with the DVD box set a few times (the very first time I ever saw it, I was five and a flower girl in my cousin’s wedding and I was the only child in the limousine and the adults were boozing and wild - my parents were not there - and my cousin put on the TV that was in the back and The Addams Family was the only thing that would come in on the signal. I was TICKLED by Cousin Its and told my dad about it and he would sometimes find reruns it on TV and tell me to come watch because he was a big fan growing up when it was originally airing). It’s also on free on its own channel on FreeVee 24/7 in the USA with Amazon Prime and I fall asleep to it. If you’ve not watched - like, let’s remember this was filming literally at the same time the Civil Rights act of 1964 was passed so it’s not going to completely fall in line with today’s views of race/gender/culture, etc. For the time, the Addams Family was considered progressive for showing a loving couple on television and poking fun at traditional US expectations (Morticia and Gomez are horrified when Pugsley wants to join the Boy Scouts, for example). In this version, Morticia is far less cold and detached than she is in the comics. She’s sweet on Gomez even if she rolls her eyes at him regularly and when the kids are actually present (Pugs&Wednesday are often not in episodes at all which is probably for the best given we know about everything with children on television sets) she is far warmer than in the original; I probably write her closer to this Morticia than the original or W22.
Next I’d say Addams Family Values, followed by The Addams Family ‘90s movies, and then Wednesday 2022. I think that the ‘90s movies were a pretty “bold departure from the source material” (to quote the Beetlejuice musical lol) on Wednesday’s character, in particular, than either of the previous media, and then it seems like the ‘90s version of her is what T.B. was running with for her characterization in W22.  I’m not keen on the musical (though I wish I could see Michelle Visage as Morticia in the West End) and I don’t care for the animation style from the 2019 movie so I haven’t watched it and I haven’t ever seen the ’92 animated series.
I think like anything that’s been done and redone, you can enjoy each interpretation for what it is, understanding it’s more inspired by the source material, rather than a 1:1 match of it. Much on the source material and if you like it, you like it - if not, walk away. I LOVE all three versions of Beetlejucie for completely separate reasons and they all barely mirror each other besides the actual character names and premise (not so sure about this new movie though IGBH, I will be going in with ZERO expectations). In the opposite lens, I ONLY like the ‘90s sitcom of Sabrina and don’t care for the original comics and (believe it or not) I don’t like the Netflix series. These examples are just that this sort of genre is for different audiences at different times, and sometimes you’ll like it and sometimes you won’t. I think taking this fun/macabre genre that is for us weirdos and giving it new life every few generations is a nice way to include other people in on the gags and the kooky and the spooky who otherwise might never have given it a try. IDK - I’m just down to clown with the Addams Family in a variety of ways and there’s really fewer families I’d personally fit in. ☠️

Julian personality styles brainrot. . .
so i was taking personality tests on behalf of julian devorak, as one does, and i thought this was actually kind of interesting.
disclaimer: while i believe this is pretty true to julian as a character, it's probably at least a little biased because i did answer based on how -> I <- see him, so it might not align with your opinion.
**also, any terms used in this are NOT talking about or diagnosing any disorder, just used as ways to describe a personality. this is a for fun test and isn't meant to be taken very seriously. (i.e., scoring "histrionic" does NOT mean this is a representation of hpd). ok? ok.
Tumblr media
the results i got (or the results that Julian got) were "Multiple Personality Styles," which basically means i either pressed "agree" too much or he has more than one equally prominent personality style. tied for first, as you can see in the image, are "histrionic" and "depressive". the idea that these two personality styles are expressed equally in julian is lowk funny to me, but also makes perfect sense. those two go hand in hand when it comes to his personality.
histrionic is defined as "overly theatrical or melodramatic in character or style"
depressive personality is related to traits that include (but are not limited to) nonassertiveness, gloominess, self-criticism, low self-esteem, guilt, and anxiety. depressive and histrionic seem to contradict a bit, but julian is a PTSD-ridden, depressed, flamboyant bisexual theater kid who loves people. that's a lot. and if anyone would have two strong personality styles concurrently, it's him.
his next highest is "masochistic" which is, well. yeah.
3rd place is hypomanic, hypomania being considered a milder version of mania (elevated mood or energy, overactivity, etc). this makes sense once again, since we know he can be restless and energetic, has consistent difficulty with sleep, and even worked so hard during the plague that he apparently didn't even notice his apprentice (potentially his love interest, depending on your interpretation), getting sick.
im not going to discuss everything on here, but i do want to define the 0% ones. Sadistic means hurting others and enjoying it, Narcissistic is inflated sense of pride (and a sensitive ego), Negativistic is opposing what other people say and do, and Schizoid is characterized with aloofness and being solitary. for all of these, - for the reason that julian is very sociable, selfless, and doesn't want to hurt a fly - 0% is the right level in my eyes.
so long story short. i just wanted to share these silly personality test results. it makes me understand why valdemar wanted to dissect julian's brain so much (though i will never support that). this was kind of a mess but really im just brainrotting and i don't post that often so 😭
here's the link for the quiz if you want to take it for yourself or even try to see if your Julian results match with mine !

hi maca. i was wondering if laurent and his friends are meant to seem a little hypocritical or if i’m misreading them? through damen’s pov we see him tackling various issues he’s been bigoted or ignorant about, and i got a sense that these were all topics he and laurent/laurent’s friends really disagreed on. but it doesn’t seem like laurent et al.’s philosophies match up with their actions? like damen’s issues around sexism and gender—laurent et al. also don’t seem to have any female friends, at least none that have been seen or mentioned as important. or mental health—damen had a lot of misconceptions that hurt laurent, but now laurent’s willing to put his friend in a treatment center against his will, really violating his bodily autonomy. or classism—laurent and ancel have experienced poverty, but now choose to surround themselves with wealthy people. they don’t really seem to have any middle class friends or anyone in their former positions. by contrast, laurent most recently brought maxime into their circle, an ultrarich person with an equestrian club/villa/etc. so overall i’m wondering if i’m being too harsh on them, or if laurent and his friends are more egalitarian in thought than in deed? even if they think or speak differently than damen, it doesn’t seem like they act much different
hello! this is a very interesting question. it has taken me a long, long time to reply but at last! here we are. my answer will be divided into three different sections.
1. gender
I agree that it comes across as hypocritical that Laurent is always quick to point out Damen's toxic views on masculinity and femininity when he himself doesn't have any female friends (at least not on page). you can 100% interpret this as hypocrisy because the text supports your analysis perfectly. this Laurent, as neo has already pointed out, has a lot of toxic traits that might be an echo of his own abuser's actions. I liked the fact that in canon the regent hated women, so I really wanted to keep that. I'm not saying hiuh Laurent hates women. on the contrary, I PERSONALLY think that because he grew up isolated and under his uncle's influence, he might not be the best when it comes to socializing/maintaining interpersonal relationships with women.
I also think there's a really interesting discussion to be had about how (in this case) men that are part of the LGBTQ group can sometimes think they are liberal and progressive simply bc they belong to said group. sadly, this exceeds the limits of the story, but it's still interesting to think about.
lastly, to be completely honest, the only reason why ancel is not shown with female friends is that I did not want to keep writing original characters. ancel feeling lonely and left behind was a huge plot point in his arch to become Damen's friend and so I benefited greatly from keeping things like that. as for aimeric, he has no friends other than ancel and Laurent because he is meant to be read as a deeply unlikeable and misunderstood character. once again, characterization limits the story quite a bit.
2. mental health and body autonomy
this is such a great point that you and other people have made both here and on AO3. I agree: Laurent playing Aimeric so that he gets committed is a violation on aimeric's rights and trust and overall dignity.
a. why then will this not be addressed?
because this is damen's pov. yes, he has grown a lot, his journey with mental health education has been long and hard and has had many rewards. BUT I do not think he is at a point in which he is THAT aware or educated on issues like this. when writing and editing this i did not feel it would be organic to have Damen contradict Laurent on this. however, other characters have pointed out that they do not agree with Laurent's views/intervention (ancel and jord -> remember Laurent and damen's conversation at the park).
I understand that a lot of people are very upset with how hiuh does not address some issues, and I want to take this opportunity to reply to those loud and valid complaints. a story cannot deal with everything. it can't solve everything. it can't address every problematic issue that arises within the narrative. why? because if it did, I believe it would read a lot like preaching. when you write something, you have a main plot (sometimes main plots that connect) and subplots. Aimeric is a side character and his story is quite literally a tiny brick in the wall that is hiuh. taking an interest in a subplot is great, but expecting the subplot to be too relevant is (TO ME) a bit of a reach.
b. does Laurent know this is wrong? why is he approaching this issue this way?
i believe there is a part of Laurent that knows this is the wrong approach, which is why he seeks to talk it out with Damen and does not simply act on his own/in secret. in some ways, damen's simplicity has acted as a good moral compass to him before.
Laurent's past institutionalization has been mentioned a couple of times, and I thought perhaps that would be clue enough to unlock that part of his reasoning. evidently, the feedback I've received from multiple people has made me realize I have an important task to complete as I'm editing the final chapters, which is to make this facet of Laurent more evident and on page. hopefully, when the story is over you will come to understand (KEY POINT: NOT APPROVE OF) his reasoning.
c. is Laurent lying when he tells Damen he didn't provoke Aimeric into using the knife on himself?
as usual, I'm not the reading police. I don't, generally speaking, care about how you read this as long as it's not... you know, in bad faith or purposefully poking around for weak spots (see: disingenuous reading). PERSONALLY, I wrote this fic with the intention of Laurent NOT being the reason Aimeric gets committed. Aimeric gets committed time and time again bc he is in desperate need of mental health aid. NOT bc of Laurent's interventions.
now, if you wish to read the scene where Laurent tells Damen that he didn't actually get to provoke Aimeric with some trauma baits (see: aimeric's brother) then it's not like I can stop you. if you feel like the text supports that analysis... be my guest.
3. economic class
I have spoken at length about this before in other asks but there is no reason why you or anyone reading this should know of my previous replies.
economic class is not well written in hiuh. this fic is not meant to be read in any way, shape or form as a study on class, classism, what my personal take on rich people is, etc. to answer your question, yes, ancel and Laurent have both experienced poverty, but they've done so in very different situations. ancel was born into poverty and struggled through it until well into his young adult years when he met berenger. on the other hand, Laurent was rich as a kid up until the moment he decided to go against his uncle and take him to court in a legal battle that lasted (roughly) around a year. this experience obviously changed and shaped Laurent as a person and it is a huge source of tension between him and Damen, but the story is told through damen's pov. Damen has NEVER experienced poverty, economic struggle, need, hunger, desperation... this story is not about this particular issue. I cannot make it about this or else there would be no story bc i believe people that have damen's kind of money would never, EVER, behave the way Damen behaves in this.
there is one character that is """"supposed"""" to represent a more middle class background: jord. HOWEVER, as I've said, this fic does NOT go into an analysis of class. it was not my goal as I wrote it nor is it now as I edit it.
to this day, hiuh is my longest and most intentionally layered work. it has gaps and holes and places where it falls short, as does every story. as does canon. if hiuh were, let's say, original fiction, then I am sure most of these issues would be the main point of many, many fanfics on AO3. fans wanting something different and better and edgier and softer and sadder is why I'm here in the first place. I wanted canon to be different, so I wrote fics. people want my fic to be different in some ways, but that's where fiction reaches a dead end. I cannot offer you, reading this and fuming over XYZ, any solution but to write another (better) version of this story.
what this doesn't mean: STOP COMMENTING YOUR OPINIONS!!! STOP ASKING ME QUESTIONS!!!
what this does mean: a lot of criticism is valid, I am giving an explanation of my motives/limitations/creative choices. I am not "defending" myself bc for the most part I do not feel attacked.
final thoughts
i loved this question because as I read it and thought of an answer I could tell where you were coming from and that your wish to know more/understand the characters better was not malicious. yes, they are all hypocrites in some ways and you are very, very right to read the story that way. I am sorry that I sort of hijacked your ask as a way to reply to a lot of other people's comments and asks, but I am afraid that if I do not post this now as one single unified message that I will never have the chance to say this again.
thank you for your time and your careful (and critical!) reading of my story.

❤️ for tintin if you're still doing the unpopular opinions ask game
OH RIGHT THIS GAME! OF COURSE! THANK YOU 💕
❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?
*deep sigh* The most huh? What if I said Tintin himself? Look, I'm not against fanon interpretations and just going against canon because that's what you like and want to do. However, it gets really annoying when people take some interpretations as canon when it's actually not canon or, even if it is, not in the entirety of canon. And I think a big reason this happens with Tintin is because of the animated series, you know the classic one. Let me elaborate.
For many fans the cartoon series was their first approach to The Adventures of Tintin and for many of them it was a childhood favorite. This alone creates a bias, realizing it or not, especially if you haven't read the comics, the original material. Don't get me wrong, I love the cartoon and it's the most faithful adaptation we have of the comics but that doesn't mean it is faithful. Many scenes were cut, violence and alcoholism were limited to the point of changing scenes entirely (I'm looking at you Crab with the golden claws), heck even the official order of the episodes doesn't match the original publication order. There are many reasons for these decisions to have been made and it doesn't mean they're wrong, they just worked for this kind of media and for their target audience at that time (90s cartoons had many limitations regarding what it could be shown, including violence, but that's how we got artists getting creative with how to depict violent themes in a nonviolent way). Yet I have seen fans taking the ideas of this cartoon as if they are the original ones.
Tintin isn't a goody shoes. Tintin is very kind and caring but also chaotic and with his own values and ethics. He doesn't curse out loud and he represses many of his feelings and anger but he is also very patient and understanding. And most of all HE HAS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! Tintin from the first albums and Tintin in the last ones isn't the same guy! I understand people liking his character more in the first adventures but you can't characterize him the same in the later albums. And it's not only because decades passed during the serialization and Herge as an artist and writer changed. It's also showcased in the story, Tintin slowly gets stable companions, friends he shares his adventures and even his life and slowly he becomes mellower and yet more open and honest, he likes his peaceful life and doesn't chase adventure unless it comes to him. How can you have Tintin after Picaros behaving like prior meeting Haddock? As if his previous adventures didn't happen and affect him?
And what the cartoon depiction of Tintin does is to take his softer and calmer traits of his character and show them during all his adventures, regardless of how he acted at each adventure. This works for making an iconic and stable hero of a cartoon but it's not like that in the comics. The movie does the opposite but I see more fans accusing it of mischaracterization although this wilder side is also part of Tintin.
So in summary, my annoyance comes when I see Tintin characterized the same throughout all his adventures although this isn't how he is in the comics and I think this is because of the effect the cartoon had on the fans. In my opinion, Tintin's character is hard to grasp and get because he's the two ends of a spectrum at the same time, calm but violent, patient but impatient (his limits are known to himself only, you can try to kill him and not yell at you but you try to kill yourself and he'll make you regret it), selfless to the point of not caring about himself but selfish enough to do what he wants and believes is right etc.
He's such a fascinating character with many layers and it makes me sad when I see people read him as one dimensional character with no space for changes and development. However every person can have their own interpretation and such and I'm not the fandom police here so go have your fun!

All your Sonic takes are valid, okay?
Hello, today I am your pastor. Where is your regular pastor? I totally didn't throw him off a bridge. Anyways, sit down because I'm here to preach about a blue hedgehog man. I've seen a lot of discussion around Sonic's characterization in Sonic Prime and how some people absolutely adore the show's take, and some people hate it. Now this could have led the fandom to having interesting debates but alas this is the internet - where interesting debates simply do not happen. (I've seen a lot more toxic arguing on Twitter, the Tumblr crowd is much cooler) But it got me thinking, at least - what is Sonic supposed to be? Who is he?
And I think that answer will change depending on who you ask. Sure, we can get some basic traits of him down. We know he's a good guy, he fights for freedom, he a bit snarky, but loves the people around him. But this is surface level stuff, right? Let's discuss his overall demeanour- "He's relaxed and nonchalent!" This half yells. "He's hyper and energetic!" The other shouts. Hold on, how did this happen?
The answer is simple, my friends - it's the Sonic franchise's inconsistent writing! You are not the problem. Sonic has had so many different takes on his personality throughout the years and throughout different media that it's gotten to a point where there's no 'correct' way to write or interpret this little blue guy anymore. "Black Knight is peak Sonic!" someone cries "No, Movie Sonic is!" Another claims. How can that be when they're so different? Because there is no right answer. People have had different experiences with his character depending on what they were first introduced to or simply what they like better. A lot of people don't like 'meta era' Sonic but there are some people who still do and think Sonic is just supposed to be a quippy goofball in colourful environments in basic stories. It depends so much on personal preference.
This isn't just limited to Sonic either - who is Shadow supposed to be? "The man who learnt to fight for humanity, upholding a promise to the one that meant the most to him - learning to put the past behind him and fighting on for the good of others with a stoic, no nonsense attitude" or is he "Haha Sonic's rival go brr, he so obsessed with him and wants to kick his ass" Shadow has been written as both of these throughout his lifetime, arguably he has spent his time in the more recent games being written as the latter - as much as so many people prefer the former. However, some people interpet the most modern entries as more canon - so therefore, they accept and prefer the latter. I am honestly surprised at the amount of takes I saw that saw Shadow as just a meanie rival until I came to this conclusion. I could go on for every character, but I'm not going to because that would take too much time. So all in all, your takes? So valid my man. If you don't like Prime because of Sonic's characterization - that's so cool, just don't call the show objectively bad for it - because it is not. It's a you thing. And there are plenty of others who agree with that opinion. If you love Prime Sonic - also great, don't shit on people for thinking otherwise - your opinion, and there are plenty more that agree with you. Honestly I think the best characterizations of Sonic I see in the fandom spheres are the ones that can pull inspo from a lot of the different Sonic media throughout time and can mix and match the stuff they like. That's uniqueness, that's fun - I wanna read that. It may not be 'accurate' to the version of Sonic you like, but who cares? If it's not your thing, don't like - don't read. That's why, in terms of writing Sonic fanfiction - saying "make sure to not make the characters OOC!" is like- one of the worst pieces of advice?? Like what is even 'in character'?'? That advice simply doesn't WORK for this series. All you need are the bare minimum basic traits, and the rest - develop as you like. Their basic profiles are the pizza dough, and you are choosing your toppings. Choose the Sonic media and fan content that you like to consume, and respect the people who like the toppings that you don't - because no one is forcing you to eat their pizza.

sae has weirdly been my fav blorbo for a long time but when considering his type I've come to realise that he probably wouldn't be into nerdy or not conventionally pretty girls. + I don't think that sae is the type to commit at all like. he's just there to fuck around and then leave and if anything the fb trope would be more fitting for his character (imo). and everytime I read fluff about him it's just so ooc to me I can't help it 😭 I mean he does have a lot of toxic traits and could be considered 'a horrible person' but yea idk you always have this deep analysis of characters I was wonder what you'd think about sae and this topic specifically haha hope I didn't bother
i disagree with this characterization of him for a lot of reason
i don't pay a lot of attention to what the fanon interpretation of sae is and im sure this aligns with his image but i dont personally think that this assessment of his character makes a lot of sense. i do understand where it comes from though !!!
i believe that a lot of this miscommunication of his characterization stems from his relationship to rin, but i've broken that down as to why i don't think sae hates rin. in fact in his own way i think he views his own harsh behavior as a way to shield rin from reality (though it had the opposite of his intended affect) i also don't believe that sae is a vapid or shallow player off-field, and that's largely in contrast to his personality before he left for spain and after.
sae is always viewed to be cold, blunt, and serious but he is also deeply affectionate of rin in their adolescence. his major change happens while we're overseas and while we don't know yet what happened specifically - it's clear to me that something borderline traumatic happened. this type of change of character through rigorous training happens to kunigami through the wildcard system and this type of betrayal that leads to betterment is a theme in bluelock as well (i.e. nagireo)
im of the belief that saes arrogance and crass way of speaking developed largely as a defense mechanism as his goal of being a striker was shattered through playing in spain. in the same way kunigami views being a "hero" through soccer as a stupid ideal post wildcard.
sae is a normal guy outside of soccer. he even says that one of his major flaws is that he's pretty clueless about everything other than soccer. his least favorite food is fries, not because he hates the taste but because he can't have them because of his nutrition restrictions. his 'fetish' is ass because he thinks it can show what kind of an athlete someone is. all somewhat silly and ultimately regular things
all that being said - i don't think sae is a shallow person. i think he thinks very deeply and logically about a lot of things and he is indefinitely arrogant, but not shallow which is why i think it wouldn't make sense for him to judge on appearance. it'd be more accurate to assume that he's sort of dense and doesn't pay attention to people who aren't in his immediate circle. the assumption that he would make judgements on your appearance if you're just a regular joe-schmo doesn't quite connect to me. he's not insecure enough to do that.
on the issue of commitment - my only opinion is that sae is a character who values independence of sense of individualism in his partners. anyone with a strong sense of self is someone he is drawn to. this is why he likes isagi and shidou and often reprimands rin because he lacks a sense of selfhood and self confidence. rin only realizes that post the u20 match.
my point being that i think sae can and will commit to somebody but there's a lot more factors for a character like him that others like isagi or chigiri or kunigami who are naturally emotionally in tune with you.
sae isn't and will never be a 'romantic' person in the traditional sense to me but i don't think it means he's incapable of love or commitment. he has a hard time communicating verbally and saying things to your face but he remembers everything you said from your last conversation and pay attention to your hobbies. if you argue, you'll always find a vase of flowers in your kitchen with a note but you always have to call first. he's not Good about the emotional aspect because even if he puts in a lot of effort - it's never going to come naturally to him
BUT that also means if you're able to meet him half-way he's a committed and decent lover to you. he tries really hard to be and it takes some patience because he's sometimes too logical and hurts your feelings but he's there where it matters etc.
this is an essay SORRY KFDHJKSD. ive spent a lot of time thinking about him and giving him depth. and im not defending him necessarily because he is a massive douchebag for a lot of your early relationship. just not for shallow or petty reasons. simply bad at coping with his emotions and expressing himself because he's very prideful

I know it's not really a popular interpretation that's gonna win me a bunch of brownie points (from what I've seen many seem to like him more as a tortured romantic or a "crouching grouch, hidden softie"), but I personally am growing to really like characterizing Astarion as a... a weird, selfish, jealous little chaos gremlin that, while he of course has his reasons, is just kind of a crappy person, even when he's in love.
Like I can fully see him as someone who, as time passes between the first proposition and the commitment scene (and you're still not throwing yourself at his feet, blubbering and sobbing about how much you love him????? the audacity??????), starts to get annoyed at you every time you talk to someone a bit too long for his liking. Like I have a veritable plethora of shots of the amazing stankfaces and unimpressed scowls he makes over my girl's shoulder (I know it's probably because he's the second in the party lineup, but in-fiction it's still funny), and some of the stills I grabbed from his comment on fixing -and hugging- Karlach are... actually kind of incredible.
Like, if I presented to you with this screenshot:
Tumblr media
and told you this is one of the faces he makes when he says "So, the untouchable Karlach is untouchable no more"? You'd probably assume that he's furious about it for some reason.
And there is a part of me kind of thinks he is, at least in a way, furious, because it takes him a few frames to compose himself, and put his pleasant smile back on:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-which is something I saw him do before. Making a very obviously blank/angry/sad face, taking a moment, and putting on a charming face right away. It's not new, really.
These three shots above were taken over the course of like 2 seconds, tops. It's a very subtle, "blink and you miss it" type of thing, but that's.... honestly all I need to think that Karlach suddenly being an actual option to you (in his weird, at this point in time very "physicality first" POV) is pissing him the fuck off. Like you doing that for her, collecting and lugging scrap metal around, and seeking out Dammon, means that you care for Karlach in some way. Which, then, makes her an opponent in his vying to be the sole recipient of your attention, and he won't suffer even an unknowing adversary. (And in my case, the object of his slowly blooming affections even hugged Karlach! Like right in front of his face!! What arrogance!!!!!! That's just rude, frankly!!!!!!)
I totally can imagine him being the type of person who, before starting a relationship, would use his lack of a need for rest to snoop through your belongings.
As someone who would casually violate your (and others') privacy in little ways, while holding his own sacred.
As someone who'd spy on your interactions with all the other companions from a crack in his tent's opening, and grip his bedroll in anger watching you dance with Wyll ("don't kiss him, don't kiss him, please don't kiss him, if you kiss him I'm fucked"), or steal your journal and get actually mad at you and be unreasonably acerbic to you the next day if it's in a language he doesn't understand.
This kind of also extends to me kind of imagining him as a boyfriend who, once he gets a bit more comfortable with physical affection, will just casually step up to you, and drape an arm around your waist or shoulders while you're talking to someone, to signal almost a sort of ownership. Someone who will make goading faces at anyone who dares look at you too long, or pull you against him in a brazen display if he catches someone checking you out. Like he'd piss on your leg to mark his territory if he could, but he'll settle for leaving a very obvious, crusted over bite mark on your neck if he must.
And yeah, that would get very annoying to any real person, but like I said about Gale before.... I think your character has got to be at least slightly not normal about them, just to match how profoundly not normal they are about you.
... Anyway, do carry on, I just like this edgy dumbass, I like him being both edgy and a dumbass, and him trying to slowly be better about this whole "~~relationship~~" thing is making my little heart happy
(yes, there's the Halsin thing. I have thoughts. But I won't kick the hornet's nest lol.)

Hi! Have you seen Domina s2? If so what are your thoughts on it?
Hey!
I have not seen Domina s2, nor have I seen Domina s1, because I just have genuine issues with it. I dislike where they chose to start the story, I dislike the way they've characterized a lot of these figures, I dislike a lot of what they've done with the history and their interpretation of the motivations behind it. And considering that Augustus is one of my favorite historical figures to read about and he already has a tendency to get really bad representations due to the people he was surrounded with (HBO Rome had Antony as a main character so of course their interpretation of Octavian, his final nemesis, was God fucking awful), it's infuriating.
Like, one of the reasons I like these figures and this period of history so much is that what actually happened was just so fascinating that I want to jam as much information about it as possible into my brain (I've harped on this before, but it is insane to me that Octavian, at the ripe old age of 22, decided to have 300 defeated and surrendered enemy soldiers slaughtered as human sacrifices on Julius Caesar's altar on the anniversary of his assassination, that is a crazy story and I wish we had more info about it) as permanently as possible. So whenever people decide to mess with that, it not only irritates me as an enjoyer of the history, but it also makes their story more dull because nothing these people come with for the sake of "ratings" is ever going to match up to real life (no, Colleen McCullough, Octavian disowning his mother based on a debunked historical theory is not more interesting than a 19 year old's only living parent dying unexpectedly a year after the only father figure he's ever known/close uncle/actual adopted father was brutally murdered thereby thrusting him into a position of extreme pressure and visibility and kicking off a personal revenge quest that led to the eventual reshaping of the Western World, sorry). And it especially doesn't work when you're relying on tropes that everyone has already seen done before.
Livia Drusilla as some conniving snake manipulating everything behind the scenes to suit her own ends is an incredibly tired trope, it's the main characterization given to nearly any interpretation of her and I've never liked it. Augustus being a power hungry tyrant who only cares about making himself a living god and nothing else is an incredibly tired trop, and it too is the main characterization given to nearly any interpretation of him and I've also never liked it. I don't even know what to do with their version of Agrippa because he just seems like a wet chihuahua half the time (and then has this insane line of "I put you where you are and Livia kept you there" that I really wrote 3k words in response to because for one, he would not fucking say that and for two it's literally untrue and for three he would not fucking say that!!!) and honestly every interpretation of him has been borderline schizophrenic (the Elizabeth Taylor movie made him significantly older than Octavian when they were the same age??? tf????). I've already seen Rome and I, Claudius (well, not really, but I have skimmed them on occasion), I don't need a rehash of old hackery. Give me something new, something interesting, something that can actually fit who these people were attested to be, and certainly more interesting than old shorthand based on ahistorical assumptions.
Domina honestly shot itself in the foot by starting the story after the Last War of the Republic (I think it starts in 27 BC when Octavian is declared Augustus, which is three years after the war against Antony), because the years between the Ides and Actium can genuinely have great character work for all of these people. And it can especially have great character work for Livia, seeing how she handled the tumultuous time leading up to eventual war, and especially how she handled Rome and the family and the politics during the time that Octavian was off at war and then in Egypt. So you've got old news characterizations that don't jive, you have boring made up stories that aren't anywhere near as fascinating as the actual history, and to make it worse you're focusing on the more placid years and bypassing any of the stuff that's actually going to be of interest and really getting into the meat of, you know, Octavian's rise to power and eventual turn into a living god, which seems to be what this show is trying to chronicle too.
And honestly? Honestly? I despise whatever the Hell they're trying to do with Livia and Agrippa. For one, again, scheming cheating whore is a tired trope, it's a tired trop that I don't care to apply to Livia. For two, it's a cop-out. I've said it before, I said it when Rome tried to do Agrippa/Octavia, it's a cop-out to try and add some tension to Agrippa by pairing him with the first woman you can find in Octavian's inner circle. No relationship that this man had, with anyone, is going to be anywhere near as interesting as the one he had with Octavian. No fictionalized, ahistorical romance with Octavian's wife or Octavian sister is going to approach the dynamic that Octavian and Agrippa had with each other. If you want to add some romance between Agrippa and a member of the Julio-Claudians, don't be a scaredy-cat and have it be with Octavian. The mutual devotion these two felt for each other, the way that Agrippa never tried to seize power even though he could, choosing instead to be Octavian's lieutenant, his attack dog, the loyalty Octavian showed Agrippa even when they were teenagers, the way these two were by each other's sides for nearly Agrippa's entire life (Agrippa predeceased Augustus by about thirty years), the longevity of the relationship and the reciprocity of it, it's all ripe for someone to do something great with it. And nobody's ever really gotten it right, there have been elements from different places that have had moments, but nothing that's had it right from start to finish. I mean, for God's sake, during Augustus's near fatal illness that I know was in Domina's first season, Augustus literally gave Agrippa his signet ring so that, if he died, his legions and followers would follow Agrippa immediately and see him as Augustus's anointed successor, and the show didn't have any of that. Insanity. Quit pussy-footing around it. If you want to add an "Agrippa loves and desperately wants something he's not sure he can have", have that something be Octavian, not Livia.
All in all, I just really don't like this show, for so many reasons, and I think they did nearly everything wrong except for maybe a few isolated things here and there, and I have absolutely no intention of watching it. Honestly, if you want good content on this time and any of these people, it's probably better to find a good nonfiction book on the period or biography on the key player that interests you the most and just read that.
Also I hate that horrible fucking wig they stuck on TGC when Augustus was literally a blond historically. Like, seriously, you have TGC there (and with all those gifsets showing how alike he and Olivia Cooke are it's a crying shame they didn't cast her as Octavia, the fancasting exists in my dreams), Augustus is attested as having been a blond pretty boy, fuck off with your terrible wig and let him use his natural hair, Roman men tended to have hair the length that most modern men keep their's nowadays anyway.

Hi!
How are you?
You write about the Black Family, so I imagine you have already been asked about that, but: what it is about them that attracts your interest the most, you would say? Like, I've started Pietas not so long ago and I found your writing of those these families to be very interesting and nuanced. It's like... well, they might not be good people, but they are still human, I guess? (I felt like saying they aren't completely bad but I don't know. Would you say that?) It's really amazing how you do that. You give these characters a sort of humanity. You let them be complex. Was it important for you to write them like that? Why do you think that's important, and what attracts you to that type of characterization of them? You know they aren't always portrayed with any nuance. Also, in that note, would you say the Blacks are abusive in any way? If so, in what sense? How do you interpret that?
Hi anon, thanks for reading my Horcrux (which is my nickname for Pietas) and for sending an ask.
To answer your questions:
I enjoy writing the Blacks because they feel like a family that fell out of an Opera/gothic novel. A doomed, aristocratic family who are plagued by generational trauma, and they remind me of my family.
I wanted to portray them with nuance because oftentimes the people who hurt us most in life aren't cartoon villains, they are people who think/ claim they love us or people whose own wounds bleed onto us. Someone can believe what they are doing/how they are parenting is for the best, yet they can inflict real damage on others.
Yes I do think the version of the Blacks in Pietas are abusive. They don't respect or even acknowledge either of their son's personhood and for both brothers this manifests differently (and they both react to it differently).
In Sirius's case he has been shown that when he steps outside of what his parent's deem to be acceptable behaviour, they withdraw what little affection and praise they previously offered him. I'm not sure what chapter you're on so I won't completely spoil for you, but there is a moment in the story where Sirius finds himself looking at Leone and Aeliana interacting:
"His thoughts spun wildly as he took a moment of solace, because fulfilling his duty would mean that Regulus would stop hating him. That perhaps being the perfect scion, however suffocating, might make his parents look at him with pride once more. That maybe he would be his mother’s son again instead of her biggest disappointment. A brief image of her lovingly stroking his hair flashed across his mind as dizziness overtook him..." Chapter 6
In the story Sirius longs to be his own person, but still deeply craves his parent's unconditional love.
In Regulus's case, he conforms to his family's wishes unequivocally and yet it still doesn't earn his parents love. He is often overlooked for Sirius and Orion and Arcturus steamroll over his career ambitions (indeed Orion doesn't even ask him what he wants to do instead he is told what they want him to do). This leads to him being deeply jealous of Sirius while also wanting to be close to him and is best shown by this exchange:
Regulus laughed, the disdainful, humourless sound clanging through Sirius’s head. ‘You are quite something. ‘
‘What does that mean?’ Sirius demanded, tearing away and pacing the room.
Regulus arched his brow, ‘It means that all they ask is for you to fulfil your duty and honour our name.’
Regulus’s face turned slightly red as he continued, ‘But that seems to be too great a demand for you. You humiliate the family at every turn, running around with filth and blood traitors.’
He paused and reminded Sirius forcefully of Orion.
‘Yet despite that, here Father and I are, having to ensure you behave yourself while you are.’
Regulus paused once more, controlling the volume of his voice. as it had been steadily rising.
‘Being matched with one of the most eligible girls in Europe, so I apologise if I struggle to muster sympathy for your so-called plight.’
Not to spoil anything but later on in the story Orion's near obsession with his father's wishes is also shown as I wanted to convey this sense of generational trauma that has left everyone miserable.
