I watched Castlevania: Nocturne the otger day and liked it a lot less than you seemed to, so I want to hear a more detailed opinion if you have one. Am I in the wrong to think it was more shounen and less "deep" in some way?
I'd say it's definitely more shounen. Introducing the "Richter can't do magic because unresolved trauma" thing right from the jump meant a Believing In Yourself powerup was pretty much inevitable, but I liked the execution of that scene enough that I didn't mind much.
It doesn't quite have the backbone of the original Castlevania, which was grounded so strongly in Dracula's apocalyptic grief - a motivation the audience is directed to find deeply understandable from minute one - that it gave the characters a solid thematic core to play off of. This let the writing stay pretty tight by letting Trevor serve as a foiling mirror for Dracula in their mutual disgust with the failures of human kindness, Sypha for Lisa in their altruistic use of their knowledge and their vilification for "witchcraft", and Alucard in the middle torn between worlds.
Nocturne is more loose and character-driven, but it still has a core theme - the argument over "the natural order" and how that plays into a fear of change from those currently on top. However, Richter doesn't really have a horse in that race, since his motivation starts and ends at Kill Vampires while everyone around him is more complex, trying to overthrow the aristocracy and free the enslaved and such. I think this makes Richter feel a little less important than Trevor was, narratively, because he sort of stands apart from the core philosophical debate at play. It took me a few episodes to get what his deal was and start caring about his self-actualization, and I think he's definitely got further to go. Possibly Alucard's presence in season 2 will give him more to play off of.
I think Nocturne has several independently interesting villains instead of one really good villain, which is a complaint I also saw about Castlevania season 4 - I liked Death just fine, but he really didn't work for everyone, and the secondary villains like Saint Germaine were much more interesting and complex. Nocturne does, however, pull off something Castlevania didn't as much, which is most of the characters acting on their own internal consistent motivation without cleanly falling into the "good guy" or "bad guy" box, causing them to slide into and out of conflicts and alliances depending on the circumstances.
I feel like Bathory is kind of a weak core villain with almost no human-level motivations or ideas beyond General Villainy, and the extent of her development being a darkest hour shonen villain powerup/frieza transformation doesn't help much, which is why I'm kind of holding out hope that they just bite the bullet and bring back Dracula. He's the nemesis from the Castlevania games, and while they gave him and Lisa a happy ending in Castlevania season 4, I don't think they need to keep him on the bench forever. It's been 300 years, Lisa is almost certainly long dead again and Dracula doesn't need to be full Mad With Vengeance Burn Down The World to still be a credible problem in need of a little Belmonting.
I had fun with season 1 of Nocturne with the understanding that the first four-episode "season" of Castlevania wasn't representative of the final shape of the story either. Sypha's character, for instance, was very flat before she and the gang went on their season 2 bonding adventure, not much more than some banter and infodumps. I think Nocturne did solid setup of the cast and the theme they'll be unpacking, and it has lots of room to explore these characters in interesting ways once they energy-ball-tennis Bathory out of the way first.

thank you so much for your answer! i actually didn’t expect such a in depth response— it actually made me kind of excited to rewatch the show so that i can give those seasons a try! i watched shameless as it was airing around s3 so it was really hard for me to cope with the idea of watching ian ‘moving on’ and bashing mickey without knowing he would be back etc. but i guess it should be time to face that considering who he gets married to! tho, if it’s okay, i wanted to ask more cause i love to see your take on it! for what ive gathered caleb cheated on ian with a girl saying it ‘didn’t count’, but was he also the one who told ian to try to be with a girl? cause i remember seeing something about it and it really pissed me off that ian even went and ‘tried’, considering s1 was him being very vocal about non being into girls! as for trevor, i did know about the monica ‘get over it’ clip because i always see people comparing it to how mickey has always been supportive no matter what (of course!!!) and also how trevor kind of forced himself on ian. i wanted to know what’s your opinion on those relationships of his, especially trevor cause it seems like it’s been the most controversial one as he spent two seasons around him. it’s funny in a way because the writers didn’t want mickey back but they still made every love interests ian had to be ‘wrong’ and showing everything that mickey would never do! also, this is out of pettiness mostly but considering all those seasons are about his bipolar disorder, does ian ever say that to his partners as a way to break up? or can i have a little of happiness thinking he just really wanted to protect who matters the most *cough* mickey *cough*. again, thank you for taking your time answering my question, i loved reading it!
hello again! more under the cut bc i'm quite chatty :)
first of all, yes, the "it doesn't count" + trying to have sex with a girl thing is true, and it honestly never felt very in-character for me. it was definitely A Choice on behalf of the writers. in fact, he gargles with mouthwash afterwards (or maybe it's vodka, i can't remember) and says "i think i have PTSD", which (of course) is meant to be humorous, but i do think it was a very jarring and confusing experience for him.
ohhhhhhh boy. the trevor of it all. well, let's begin by saying that there's a lot of controversy surrounding trevor. there are some really rancid anti-trevor takes that i don't agree with, primarily the ones rooted in transphobia, which i think is disgusting and abhorrent. i think people are generally either very anti-trevor or pretty neutral on him. i don't think anyone out there is singing his praises, or at least i've never heard a take like that in the time i've been in the fandom. as for me & my opinion, i think he is an incredibly frustrating, pretentious, self-serving character and he irritates me deeply. i think that while he could have been a good friend to ian, he fucked things up by trying to be his boyfriend. they were incompatible from the start and i honestly don't know why they started anything in the first place. like i know why, i just don't understand it. they had no spark. they had no connection. their only commonalities were that they were 1) both gay and 2) into advocating for homeless + at-risk youth. and that's like, it. they had friendly coworker energy, not electric, bone-shattering chemistry. my rating? 0/10 stars. i was very happy when he was written off and ian was left to sort his shit out on his own, unencumbered by a dissatisfying, toxic relationship.
and caleb.......ugh. fucking caleb! i'm surprised he doesn't get vertigo from riding such a high horse. he treated ian like an accessory and consistently put him in uncomfortable situations for no reason other than his own pleasure and/or to manipulate other people. the ONLY good thing he did was lead ian down the EMT path, and that is it. otherwise he was quite literally the worst. imagine cheating on someone and then being like "actually, this is a you issue." alexa, define "cold-blooded" 🙄
to answer your question, ian never credits his bipolar disorder when ending things with any other partner, no. trevor ended because ian ran off with mickey and lied to him about it/cheated on him (though they did spend another season in each other's lives in a really strange capacity, which was an interesting choice by the writers) and caleb ended because he cheated on ian. caleb was a clean break whereas trevor was super messy and drawn-out. but no, he doesn't talk about wanting to protect them from his disorder during their breakups. he tells them both about it early on, is transparent about it, and expresses his concerns about it being a lot to handle, but it isn't credited as the reason for the breakups, no.
i think when it comes to ian protecting mickey from his disorder, it's important for us to view things through an ian-centric lens. why did he do what he did? was it solely to protect mickey, or was it coming from a place of insecurity? a place where he felt like a burden? a place where he felt hopeless and aimless and scared? post-episode and post-diagnosis, it's very common to fall into what i like to call The Pit, which is essentially a shallow bed of self-loathing and the desire to self-isolate away from everyone and everything. we see a lot of that in the end of s5 and the beginning of s6. he's made himself very small, is afraid to do nearly anything for fear of further destruction, and feels incredibly trapped and frightened by his circumstances. all of these factors contribute to his behaviors and choices, including (but not limited to) breaking up with mickey. did he end things because he didn't want mickey to spend his life coping with the realities of loving someone with this disorder? yes. but he did what he did because he was scared. and i think it's really important we make that distinction when talking about and analyzing that storyline.

Saw your post on Frederick in tangled. I was curious about your thoughts on quirin. He tried to warn Frederick about why he shouldn't have removed the golden flower and knew about those rocks. I get the feeling that while he also didn't have a plan? He did have faith in how the problem would sort itself out and in his new home. He did survive the fall of the dark kingdom afterall. Also Edmund is probably the better of the two kings. What do you think?
Yes finally. Finally an excuse to go off on more Tangled dads on Tumblr other than just Frederic.
I say this of course, but Quirin isn’t nearly as bad as Frederic, but I honestly think that’s mostly because he wasn’t given enough screen time or attention. Like his actions are more reasonable to an extent because he is only in charge of a town rather than a whole dang kingdom but I question what kind of ship he runs if none of the other members of Old Corona ever brought up the state of their homes to the captial (or maybe they did and Frederic shipped them off to keep their silence, who knows). In any case, yeah. Quirin having less power and a much more accident prone kid, as well as him being a direct victim of the dark rocks power in the past makes him a much more sympathetic character than Frederic.
Granted, I STILL have some major issues with him. He like most other dads in the show (with Captain and maybe the Baron being exceptions) he doesn’t show his kid, Varian, respect. I can understand it to an extent, again because Varian is extremely reckless at the beginning, but what really rubbed me the wrong way is how he would ordered Varian to trust him, yet he doesn’t even offer anything in return for that trust. Varian gave him a valid arguement against trusting him because he literally just saw him lie in court, but he just gets shut down without even explaining anything.
Another issue I have with Quirin is that despite his overprotective nature, he is still implied to be neglectful, sometimes to dengerous degrees. Like, I totally get him not always being there because he is the leader of Old Corona. I can accept that, but again my acceptance can only be stretched so far. At one point Old Corona is in the process of being completely overrun by the black rocks and he just…. lets Varian isolate himself in his lab? Does Quirin even know that a decent amount of black rocks sprouted there? He keeps telling Varian to stay away from the rocks, but other than ordering him around and scolding him after catching him in the act, he doesn’t do much to keep Varian away from them. Heck, he heard a loud bang sound coming from his son’s lab, the same son who nearly blew up the whole village not too long ago, and a book + a sheet is enough to delay the confrontation?
Don’t get me wrong though, it’s clear he genuinely cares about his son’s actual wellbeing (as opposed to Frederic who is just interested in keeping a fake state of safety until the bitter end) since he at least is constantly shown to worry over Varian, a bit too subtly for my taste, but I’m willing to chalk it up to him just being a really reserved character in the first place. Quirin is also a WAY better leader of his people than Frederic because unlike Frederic, Quirin legit had plans to at least evacuate his people.
Then again, I think his methods of handling the rocks in Old Corona isn’t him having faith in the problem being solved; quite the opposite in fact. Quirin’s a refugee from the Dark Kingdom who was forced to flee from the rocks before. He is simply doing it again. While he is better at handling things than Frederic, it is still a very temporary solution to a serious problem. Quirin gave up on the Dark Kingdom and left, so he is doing the same with Old Corona due to his experience. This is arguably the major conflict between him and Varian because Quirin lacks the will to fight for his home because he already lived through losing it to this same threat, meanwhile Varian has the will to save his home, but lacks the perspective because Quirin refuses to share.
Of course, much like with Frederic, I want to like Quirin a lot more than I do. All of what I stated before wouldn’t normally be actual criticisms I had to his character because having flaws is what makes a character more interesting in my problem. However, they are legit criticisms because his character stops before any of those issues are addressed in any sort of way. He gets himself fossilized by protecting Varian, then he is just reduced to a smiling background character who occasionally gets a “I’m proud of you, son” for the writers to reassure us that he is in fact alive inside for the most part. Heck, I would make the argument that in the last season Quirin is made out to be an even more neglectful father because he doesn’t even visibly show any concern for Varian anymore. His son legit got kidnapped by some crazy girl who stole the thing that destroyed his old home and nearly destroyed his new one and the only scene we get of him afterwards before the finale is him just pruning pumpkins. Not showing any care to your child at all isn’t the answer to overprotectiveness!
We never get his feelings over his home getting overtaken by black rocks once again. We never see Quirin make any real attempt to bridge the emotional gap between himself and Varian. We never even see him her a line between himself, his former fellow brotherhoods member, and his king. Much like how Frederic was reduced to the stupid dad trope in S3, Quirin is reduced to a shallow supportive becakground dad despite the show trying to build him up to be something more in both the end of Before Ever After and in the Dark Kingdom storyline. To me, Quirin so just the personification of TTS’ bad habit of promising interesting concepts and never delivering them.

As for Edmund, I’ll try to make this quick because gosh Quirin took long. King wise, I have little to no issue with Edmund’s character. He wanted to protect his kingdom even if it meant sacrificing his place in his son’s life. Unlike Frederic, he seems to actually at least try to keep the damage from spreading out, even if it’s most definitely impossible on his own for the most part, but I can appreciate the effort. So yeah, a MUCH better king than Frederic, but the best king of them all is Trevor. Of course, I have a LOT more issues with Edmund as a FATHER rather than a king, but I think I’ll cut myself off there since you just asked about my thoughts on him as a ruler and also because this answer has become an essay and half.

Can I just take a minute to say how awesome the show Julie and the Phantoms is? 
I binged it last Sunday, and have literally not stopped listening to the soundtrack all week. But that’s not the only reason it’s great. The main character and her best friend are POC. There’s an LGBT relationship that’s done well and absolutely critical to the plot. Julie’s dad is a single dad, and portrayed as an amazing father that cares about his daughter’s happiness and is honestly just trying to do what is best for both of them. I expect if it gets a second season we’ll see more of Julie’s tia and her brother, who only had brief scenes but were clearly an important part of her life. It passes the Bechdel test! Which, I know, low bar, but I mean it. Julie and Flynn talk more about music than Luke or Nick, and a lot of the time when they do talk about the boys it’s because of the band and not romance. 
On the band. They are fantastic. They’re all such good people, and even their massive fuckup with missing the dance is understandable when you realize why they were so upset and wanted revenge. Especially in light of Luke’s motivation, which is that Trevor took any chance he had of his parents hearing his music and realizing that his dream was worth it.
Which brings me to Luke. Luke and Alex get a lot more development this season than Reggie, but that’s understandable when we only got nine 30 - 40 minute episodes. Luke’s song Unsaid Emily absolutely broke me. The grief in all of them is so raw, even though for his parents it’s been 25 years. 
There is a love triangle brewing here, but it’s done so well I can forgive them for it. Julie knows she’s in love with Luke, so when she finally gets her chance at Nick she turns him down, and is honest about why. She tells Flynn she knows ‘this Luke thing’ (ie her crush on him) ‘isn’t going away for a while, so why waste Nick’s time?’. And Nick doesn’t react with jealousy. He’s still super happy and proud of her when she preforms, even when she’s doing it with the guy he lost out to. 
I also love the acting so much. There’s so many little things, like the ways Alex and Reggie look at each other when they see Julie and Luke together being adorable. And the whole bit during Edge of Great, where Luke watches Julie dancing with the others but not coming over to him like she usually does, and you can see he’s confused by it. So he goes up to her, tentative but determined, and she responds before turning away, because this is at the point where she’s still trying not to be in love with him. So he ends the song by coming back over and singing into the microphone with her, drawing her back in. And it’s just... you can see that it’s probably the point where she realizes she’s not going to be able to get over him that fast, because she really does love him. 
And the relationship between Alex and Willie. Damn. It’s huge. And it’s done so well. Willie’s actions are central to the plot, and while he definitely screwed up, he acknowledges it, apologizes, and does his best to fix his mistakes. And there’s no recrimination from the boys. They don’t get pissed at Alex for falling in love, or at Willie for screwing up once he apologizes. There’s no ‘oh you’re spending time with your new boyfriend and not us’ sort of thing, which was so nice to see. 
I really hope it gets a second season. There’s so much to explore with the band, Julie, her family, and even Trevor/Bobby. It was such a pleasure to watch. I cried a lot, and laughed, and just... overall I adore this show. It would have meant so much to highschool me, so I hope those who need the message of finding your own voice see it. 
If you have netflix, please give this show a watch. You won’t regret it.

Tangled Salt Marathon - The King and Queen of Hearts

The existence of this episode just baffles me, as it undermines so much of what season three was trying to accomplish. 
Summary:  Rapunzel continues to try and restore the memories of her parents, King Frederic and Queen Arianna, and hopes to use the journal of Herz Der Sonne to remind them, but they do not understand the significance. Arianna still lusts for adventure, while Frederic cannot get over his obsession of egg collecting. Rapunzel recruits her friends to try and set up the perfect date for them and while they cannot find anything in common personality wise, they share a mutual love for Rapunzel. However, King Trevor arrives with the intent to woo Arianna using an ocean crystal he found.
So What Exactly Is the History Here?

We have no context for this sudden love triangle. All we know is that Trevor hates Frederic because he’s still in love with Arianna who wound up marrying him instead. 
But like, I don't know why Arianna married Frederic. I don’t know why Trevor is still hung up on her years later. Did she actually choose Frederic or was it an arranged marriage cause that’s what royalty did back then? Was she having an affair with Trevor this whole time but couldn’t/wouldn’t leave because of duty? Was she and Trevor pining star crossed lovers, or is Trevor just an incel? 
I know what the story wants me to assume; that Arianna deeply loves Frederic and that Trevor is just a jackass loser; but the series has done such a poor job of making Frederic likable and giving him and Arianna any sort of chemistry that I’m inclined to side with Trevor. 
For all we know, he may be trying to rescue Arianna from both her memory loss and her abusive relationship while at it. Especially now that she’s no longer needed as a ruler and has no reason to stay in Corona. 
Why Not Just Use the Potion from Rapunzel: Day One?

While any Varian cameo is appreciated, it doesn’t add thing to the story. In fact it only raises more questions. We already had a cure for the memory loss, why aren’t we using it? 
Even if we write it off as Rapunzel no longer having that particular Saporian spellbook on hand, she still has a whole dungeon full of actual Saporians who know magic that she could gain information from! There’s also Xavier, who already knows everything under the sun about Saporian/Coronian history and magic and owns spellbooks galore. You’re telling me he just has mood potions lying around but can’t brew up a cure for memory loss? 
Then there’s also the fact that the amnesia spell doesn’t work on Rapunzel’s parents the same as it did on Rapunzel and we’re never given a reason why. Like just some basic consistence is all I ask show.

I also can’t figure out what Varian is even trying to do here. Where’s is the science to this? What does strawberry goop and lighting have to do with memory? It’s just a cheap reference to Frankenstein and nothing more.  
We’re Already Pass Seven Months Since Rapunzel’s Return.

Ok, I have gotten into frequent debates with people about the timeline of season three. Many a story board artist and writer on the show have came forward and stated that season three was only one year. But the very existence of this episode disproves them! 
If you remember season one, Hearts Day took place after the Goodwill Festival, but before Queen for a Day. Even when putting episodes back into their intended production order that still remains true. 
Hearts Day has to be at least seven months past Rapunzel’s birthday, if not eight months, because the Goodwill Festival is six months past and her parent’s anniversary (QfaD) is nine months past. 
Now Rapunzel’s Return has to be Rapunzel’s 20th birthday because season two was a full year, and even if you say it’s not, then that still doesn’t explain Once a Handmaiden (the Goodwill Festival) coming after this episode.  
And no you can’t move the episodes around, Once a Handmaiden has be the second to last episode of the series and Under Raps always comes after Rapunzel’s Enemy in any order you watch the series in. 
No matter how you slice it, we’re missing a birthday episode for Rapunzel and season three has to be more than a year; a year and a half at the very least, if not two full years.  
Look I’m not trying to be disrespectful of the talented artists who worked on this show, but their word isn’t law. The very fact that they’ve had to tell us the timeline after the series was over with indicates bad writing, and the very fact that the show itself contradicts them indicates either a lack of communication behind the scenes or a lack of editorial oversight. Either option is just poor management. 
We Have Yet Another Failed Narrative Promise!

Are we seeing a pattern yet? 
This is the third time in a row where the episode flat out states that Rapunzel needs to learn something and then, just, never has her learn it; four if you count her non-apology to Varian. Instead the show rewards her for her bad behavior by just giving her want she wants on a sliver platter for no adequate reason. 
In fact, one could argue that this episode is the worst offender in the show because divorce is a real thing real kids have to go through. Children that will undoubtedly watch the series. 
How upsetting would it be to such a child to watch Rapunzel force her parents back together  with zero consequences and realize that they can’t do that in real life? It can potentially feed into misplaced delusions or make them even more bitter, either way it’s unhealthy and super irresponsible to tackle such subject matter in this way. Even Sesame Street handled the topic of divorce better than this supposedly ‘mature’ show. 
It’s a Castle! Why Can’t Frederic Get His Own Room?

Frederic is the king. He still technically owns everything even if he’s not the one still in charge. He could have his pick of any room so why is he forcing himself on Eugene? Hell he doesn’t even have to stay in the castle. As pointed out during The Return of the King review, there’s other accommodations within the kingdom that’s suited for royalty. Why not head up to that mountain retreat?  
This is a Really Bad Message

I understand that this is meant to be a joke, because of how ridiculously over the top it is, but because the series gives Rapunzel what she wants in the end without ever having her acknowledge how she is wrong here, it winds up validating her toxic world view anyways.
Divorce is not inherently a bad thing. We should be working towards both normalizing it and promoting healthy coping mechanisms for those that go through it, adult and child alike. What Rapunzel is doing here is just repeating puritanical fearmongering. And while I can understand why she might behave in this way, I don't understand why the show refuses to call her out on it. Or any of the other million bad behaviors she displays repeatedly through out the show... like the example below for instance... 
Why Am I Suppose to Like Rapunzel Again?

It’s like the writers don’t understand that a joke can damage a character, especially if it’s overplayed. Super sweet upbeat Rapunzel snapping because she finally met someone who was annoying or a situation she couldn’t just solve with a positive attitude was funny maybe like the first time; but we’re three seasons in and this is supposedly her closest loved ones.  
Look at them! They’re fucking terrified of her! All they did was point out that she maybe should do her job and deal with real problems instead of poking her nose into her parents business where it doesn’t belong! And this brat is now the ruler of the whole kingdom!? No one can legally stand up to her. 
Like where’s the Eugene that stood up to her in Under Raps for trying this same bullshit? Why hasn’t she learned her lesson? She also pulled this same bullying tactic on young Lance and teen Eugene two episodes. Cass left her ass, supposedly, because of her bossy thoughtless ways. And this is also the same woman who abused a child back in season one and still has never acknowledged it. 
Yes characters should be flawed, but they should also face real consequences for their actions, and if they’re a protagonist they need to learn and grow past their flaws. 
I actively started to dislike Rapunzel after this scene. I already felt something was off way back in the season three opener, but this is the point where I stopped and went “What the fuck?” She used to be my second favorite character behind Varian. I didn’t go into this wanting to hate her, even after this episode I still held out hope that they were trying to purposefully lead up to some sort of falling out with everyone and with Rapunzel having to own up to her bullshit in order to win. You know like a classic third act “the hero is now alone due to their past mistakes” type story. But Nope! 
There’s no pay off for any of this. Rapunzel is just mean for the sake of being mean in season three, and no one is aloud to call her out on it. She’s now the same type person as Frederic, a tyrant. That’s not a good development! 
She’s Literally Bullying Her Own Parents Now, and I’m Suppose to Find that Funny?

Yes, Frederic is her abuser, and yes some people might find this scene cathartic if they hate him. But this isn’t actually calling out his past abuse. It’s just Rapunzel treating a now powerless old man with that same abuse and denying him bodily autonomy. An old man who has both less political rights and less power within the relationship than her; since due to his memory loss he is now dependent upon her. 
In the real world it’s the equivalent of picking on an Alzheimer's patient who is in your care. I don’t give a shit how much of dick they were before the illness set in, you don’t fucking do that!  
Why Should I Want Arianna and Frederic To Be a Couple?

The show has done nothing to sell this relationship. In fact one could argue that the show is trying to purposefully sabotage it. 
Before the memory loss Frederic was proven to be abusive, to the point where even his own wife was afraid of him and wouldn’t stand up to him. Meanwhile Arianna was shown to be a shell of her former self who’d all but given up upon the things she actually enjoyed in life. And now that they both have had a second chance they have even less motive to stay together. 
Look at Arianna up there? She’s clearly not enjoying her time with him. While he doesn’t want to engage in anything that she likes. I mean a couple doesn’t have to share their interests in everything, but there still has to be some sort of connection and the series just does not give us that connection. 
There’s no reason why they should stay together. They no longer have any commitment or duty to fulfill as rulers and their daughter is fully grown. Contrary to what Rapunzel says, the kingdom isn’t going to fall apart if they separate. It actually would probably better for everyone, including Rapunzel, if they got divorced. At least then she’d have to grow up somewhat and stop being a controlling asshat.  
Why is Attila Here?

I thought Attila got a job running his own bakery and that it was Lance who became the new cook at the Snuggly Duckling? Even if you argued that Attila was just doing Rapunzel a solid that still wouldn’t explain who is running the place when Lance isn’t there. 
If you’re going to set up developments like that then you need to either stick with them or give an on screen reason for why these previous developments are no longer relevant. Flat out ignoring them like this is just lazy. 
Lance’s New Outfit is the Best Thing About the Episode, and It’s Also a Complete Waste.

Lance deserved a new outfit because the team was too lazy to give him one for season two, even during the island arc. This however is a waste because it doesn’t add anything to the narrative. People were paid to make this thing for it to only show up for a few seconds of screen time.

Oh let me count the ways in which this is so, so stupid. 
Neither Rapunzel nor Frederic has ever proven themselves “thoughtful and responsible.” In fact both of them being irresponsible is intentionally a plot point in the main story arc.
How would either Frederic or Arianna know any of this? Not only have they lost their memories, but they didn’t raise Rapunzel themselves and those traits aren’t inherited; they are taught. 
Gushing over your grown daughter isn’t a point of connection! 
Why would anyone be compelled to kiss a practical stranger, that they previously didn’t even like, just because they both admire some woman they also barely know and happen to be related to? What is the thought process behind this? “Oh we made that? Then lets make another one!” What the fuck show? I’m ace and even I know that’s not a normal thing to get titillated over. 
The Series Turns Frederic Into a Literal Baby In a Last Ditch Effort to Make Him Likable

The whole point behind the amnesia plot was to absolve Frederic of his past wrong doings. You can’t call out an old man with Alzheimer's for being a dictator, I suppose. (not like that’s ever stopped me from criticizing Ronald Reagan, tho)  But from there the series then takes it one step further and actually infantilizes both Frederic and Arianna, because Chris assumes that if he makes Fredric as pathetic as possible the audience won't hate him any more. Well guess what, it didn’t work. Frederic isn’t suddenly a poor woobie just because he’s useless now. That’s not how that works.  
Rapunzel Literally Physically Assaults a Person, Kidnaps Them, Threatens Them With Even More Bodily Harm, and Causes an International Incident; All Because They Asked Her Mom Out On a Date!

You can’t hear it in the screen shots, but there’s very clearly a clanging sound to indicate that Rapunzel just wacked Trevor upside the head and knocked him out. 
Let me repeat, a Disney protagonist just committed armed assault against a guy, simply because she doesn’t respect her own mother.
What the Fuck!!!???
Arianna is fully grown woman. She is perfectly capable of making her own choices and she agreed of her own volition to go out with him. In fact she’s the one who asked Trevor if she could come along on his sea voyage. It’s not Rapunzel’s place to interfere with that. 
Secondly, Rapunzel shouldn’t get a free pass to attack people just because she’s doesn’t like them. And she most assuredly shouldn’t get to write off her cruelty as justice because she's royalty! What the hell? You just turned one of your official princesses into a literal tyrant for the sake of a joke, Disney! 
Where the fuck was the oversight on this show!? 
And to top it all off, Trevor is a ruler of a competing kingdom. This could easily have been deemed an act of war. Thankfully for everyone involved Trevor has far more sense and compassion than Rapunzel and doesn’t push the matter. 
Yes that’s right! The intentionally annoying prat and comedic antagonist is a more upstanding person than the main heroine! Let that sink in! 
Wait, If Laws Don’t Apply Out In the Ocean, Then Why Did Eugene and Max Have Jurisdiction to Arrest Lady Caine in Peril on the High Seas?

Max shoved this same rule book into Eugene’s face when Eugene rightfully questioned if it was his job to arrest the mutineers. This book said that it was not only his job, but that he was also legally required to stop any and all ‘wrongdoing’ no matter where he was at nor whether he was on duty or not. While also failing to specify what ‘wrongdoing’ entailed. 
Now that’s very problematic and ridiculous for a whole host of reasons that I’ve already covered back in my review of Peril on the High Seas, but this scene now adds a whole new layer of stupidity to the mix. 
If zero laws apply out in open waters than yes, Eugene and Max were acting out of their jurisdiction. Not only that, but the pervious dumb rule regarding their duties is also now null and void. So, Justice For Lady Caine! 
Oh, but were not done yet, cause it gets dumber. 
If laws, including marriage don't apply, then getting married while out at sea also would not apply. Thereby rendering Trevor’s plan useless, unless they got married back in Equis. Which if they did that, it would bypass the entire pointless rule book completely because Equis is not subject to Corona’s laws anyways. 
There’s not even any ‘inter-kingdom’ laws that they would be subject too because Equis isn’t a part of the seven kingdoms. Any treaty they did previously have with Corona would be something else entirely, and Trevor would be within his rights to end such an agreement.     
Also Trevor is a king. He can do whatever the fuck he wants. Same goes for Arianna.
Ummm, No You Don’t Rapunzel

Trevor can’t marry Arianna without her agreement to it. It’s already been established that she’s physically capable of taking care of herself and she’s also mature enough to make her own decisions. If she did wind up marrying him it’d be because it’s her fucking choice to and Rapunzel has zero right to interfere with that.  
There’s no one to rescue here. Rapunzel has no reason to go chasing after her mom. All this is doing is denying a grown woman agency over her own life. Why should I or anyone, root for Rapunzel here? 
You Do Know That Arianna Has More Than Just Two Choices Here, Don't Ya Show?

Arianna doesn’t have to be in any relationship. That’s also an option. While I personally like Trevor, this shouldn’t be a choice between him or Frederic. The show should be asking what Arianna, as a character, would want for her life, instead of just shoehorning her into just being a wife for someone else. 
I still don’t know what Arianna really wants in life, but I do know that being a domestic housewife and a queen does not suit her. She doesn’t actually like being tied down with commitments and responsibilities. She’s repeatedly indicated over and over again that she feels uncomfortable in her role. 
But the show reduces her into trophy to win and turns her into a damsel in distress multiple times. Then it further neuters her so that she complacently walks back into that life over and over again for no logical reason. She’s treated not as a person but as a prop.    
Really, Arianna? Are You Really Sure About That?

These aren’t Arianna’s words. They’re Chris’s. 
Arianna has shown zero interest in Frederic up to this point. The closest they got was during that creepy boat scene where they just jumped to almost kissing for no real reason.  While before now Arianna was making actual goo-goo eyes at Trevor earlier, before Raps stepped in and broke them up.

They actually do have things in common and had a genuine point of connection. They even almost kissed themselves until Raps started being a dick. No forced and icky conversations about their grown children needed here folks!

While I still firmly believe Arianna should just be single, the show does far more to convince me that she and Trevor should be together more so than her and Frederic. Everything about this scene on the boat feels forced and hollow because it doesn’t ring true to what was previously established. 
This just isn’t good writing. It’s the animation equivalent of a six year old smashing their Barbie dolls faces together and shouting “now kiss!”, all because a middle aged man couldn’t get over they fact people didn’t like his self insert. 
No, wait, I apologize. That’s being mean to six year olds. They usually have more interesting plots and established characterization than this.  
Hey, Remember When the Series Villainized an Orphan For Stealing This Stupid Book?

Yeah, stealing the book was treason and the mains ruined a child’s life over it, but apparently it just doesn’t matter any more cause no one seems to give a shit about Trevor taking it. Like, yes, as the king of another kingdom, Trevor isn’t beholden to Frederic’s bullshit, but you would think that the characters would treat this as a bigger deal than what they do, given how they responded previously to it being taken.
Unless Rapunzel was just talking out of her ass back during The Alchemist Returns. That’s also quite possible.  
This Literally Has Nothing To Do With You Rapunzel

Just because Rapunzel herself is a woman, doesn’t mean that stealing the agency of another female character isn’t misogynist. Especially when their both written by primarily men.  
Every guy who was involved with the writing of the episode, should be fucking ashamed of themselves!!! 
So What Exactly Has Trevor Done Wrong Up To This Point?

Yes, the story board artists and voice actors do a lot of heavy lifting here to try and make Trevor seem like a creep. Arianna’s body language and tone of voice when dealing with him here will be very familiar to a lot of women, I’m sure. I know what it’s like to have a stalker and not know how to turn them down because you’ve been trained all your life to ‘be polite and nice” to people, and I’m not unique in that regard. 
But here’s the thing, it’s not set up properly. There’s nothing backing this sudden shift in the characters’ dynamic. Up till now Trevor has been a perfect gentlemen. Sure he was over the top as always, and you could call it an act when regarding his politeness to Frederic, but he seemed to genuinely respect and admire Arianna and clearly desires genuine affection in return from her. Why would he suddenly stop behaving in a way that worked for him and start talking over her instead? 
Also why wouldn’t Arianna just tell him no to begin with if that’s what she wants? She had no trouble speaking her mind before now. But that begs the question why she wouldn’t return his feelings as well, because as stated above, she clearly showed interest in him previously.

Yeah, okay, you’re daughter has no reason to be here to begin with, disrespected your wishes, and attacked Trevor first. At this point I’d argue he has a right to retaliate. Especially since, if Rapunzel was allowed to board, you know she’d just attack him again, because she knows no other way to resolve conflicts other than to hit people very hard.  
Arianna’s actions here only make sense if she’s kept in the dark about what an awful human being her daughter really is. That’s poor writing. 
Also, having a woman just punch people while denying them actually agency and choice within the plot is not ‘girl power.’ It’s fucking misogyny!
How Does Doing the Bare Minimum, and Just Showing Basic Human Decency Count As ‘True Love’?

This Still Doesn’t Redeem Frederic

So through out the episode Frederic has inexpiably shown an obsession for eggs. He now collects them even though this was never an established trait before now. But whatever. He’s just been through something traumatic and looking for something to ground himself.  Far be it from me to make fun of someone else’s special interest. If you like to collet eggs than good for you. Go live your life to fullest. 
That’s more respectful than how the show handles it, as everyone dismiss his interest and it’s treated like a joke through out the episode. Only to have said obsession save the day. But this isn’t here to teach the others about respecting other people’s hobbies, oh no, it’s here to try and give Frederic a big hero moment so you’ll cheer for him. 
Except one nice thing does not erase his past actions! I don’t care what your hobby is, if you deliberately try to cause grievous harm to people you’re and asshole! And you will continue to be an asshole until you can admit what you’ve done wrong and try your best to make up for it. 
I Hope You Made Back Up Copies of The Tunnel Maps

A bunch of people are more upset over this development than I am, because it is a historical artifact and preserving the past is important. But the only story function the book held was a map to the tunnels, and said tunnels were never utilized properly through out the entire show. 
To this day people still don’t understand that they’re meant connect the island to Old Corona or that Herz Der Sonne is the one who built them into order to invade Saporia because the show is so bad at its world building. And come season three, they’re all but irrelevant anyways. Such a wasted concept. 
Once Again the Whole ‘Memory Loss’ Subplot Is a Copout

Ok that’s not how the spell worked previously, but that’s not what I’m taking issue with here. 
If the whole point behind the amnesia plot twist was to sweep Frederic’s awfulness under the rug, then I expect his past actions to be addressed once he’s regained his memories. They are not. 
This episodes reverses the very thing that the season was trying to achieve and just hopes the audience is too stupid/attention deficient to notice. Well guess what, we noticed and we’re far smarter than you Chris. 
Conclusion
I don’t understand the point of this episode. It shoots everything season three is trying to do in the foot. It screws up the timeline, makes Rapunzel even more of an irredeemable dickhead while preventing her from learning yet another needed lesson, undermines Arianna as a character once again, and it puts Frederic back in the crosshairs of the audience’s scrutiny. 
Oh and look, it’s written by the same guy who wrote Rapunzel’s Return. Why am I not surprised.

I’m going to be real with you guys: when I saw a lot of my friends on Facebook posting on this movie, I was concerned. Because the people who had seen it said they either didn’t like it much, or outright hated it. 
But I saw it, and I thought it was fine? It’s a good movie. I didn’t understand some of the hate it’s getting. 
I understand not liking it as much as the first movie. I don’t think it’s as good. But it is a good movie and I was baffled that anyone hates it? I put the question to Tumblr, and got an answer back and while I don’t agree with a lot of the criticisms, and I think this is still a pretty good movie, it does have some things in it that don’t hold up well when you inspect too closely, and it sticks very closely to what you might expect from, say, an 80’s superhero movie starring Christopher Reeve. Which is why I’m a bit confused when people say they think that it should have done more with being set in the 80’s.
All I’m saying is: if you watch the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies, then this one will make a lot more sense to you. But should you have to watch something else to enjoy this movie here? That’s a bit unfair to expect of your audience, isn’t it?

Alright I don’t want to do too much Plot to give away the story of a movie that just came out, but here we go: there’s a rock that grants wishes, and the villain uses it to cause problems. 
Some people took issue with Steve Trevor and his relationship with Diana taking up as much of the movie as he did. And I get that, but at the same time one complaint many people had about the first film was that in killing off Steve, it didn’t get a chance to sue him more in future films; so now the audience/critics complaining that he’s brought back and has a large role feels to me, a bit hollow. The way he’s brought back has some shenanigans that I question, but it fits with the movie’s theme about wishes and truth.
Max Lord is an interesting character, and I ultimately liked how he turned out in this movie. I’ve seen some complaints about his backstory being dumped in detail in the final bit of the movie, but it is somewhat implied by what went on before, so I didn’t mind. Some others thought that he was meant to be a parody of modern Donald Trump, so had problems with him getting any sort of character arc at all. He’s got very little in common with modern Donald Trump other than the hair.
Again, if you have knowledge of the character outside of the movie, like in the comics, I feel like his story works. Because I expected his ending to be something different. But I suppose once again, a film shouldn’t get too much credit for playing with tropes of the work it’s adapting that most of the audience isn’t familiar with.
Barbara Minerva/Cheetah is an interesting character, but I think the film does a bit of disservice in making her have a somewhat stereotypical story of ‘Nerdy girl with glasses that suddenly gets respect when she takes off her glasses and dresses differently.’ Again, this is a feature that feels like an homage to an 80’s film, because this was an all too common character arc for decades--one that the first movie even lampshades/mocks when Diana puts on glasses to disguise herself. So I can see why this wouldn’t work for everyone. I’d also really like to see this character come back and do more with what she’s got, because it feels like there are so many things to be done with this character that just...aren’t.
What I really like about this movie is that Patty Jenkins was able to give it the ending she wanted. The first film ends with a fight between Diana and Ares, but recently Jenkins admitted that it wasn’t the ending she really wanted to do--she didn’t want there to be a big battle between good and evil, she wanted to resolve the conflict in a more personal way. And now she was able to do that her way to show that Diana isn’t just someone who can defeat evil by physical force, but through empathy, understanding, and making a villain see the consequences of his actions. She gives every chance she can to give up peacefully, and that’s a good thing.
Wonder Woman’s strength is not just that she’s more physically powerful than almost anyone else. And that’s something a lot of recent DC media has kind of missed.
And I really like the message of this movie? That you can’t always get what you want, and that’s okay. You’re going to have to learn to deal with that. That sounds like a ‘duh’ maybe, especially in 2020, but after seeing Avengers: Endgame in which Steve Rogers’ previously established character arc with a similar line of ‘You have to learn to live with what you have’ ends with him actually regressing because he gets to go back in time and live with Peggy…. Well, this movie’s take was a lot better for me.
My instinct is to defend this movie, and upon hearing/reading them, I do think that not all of the haters’ criticisms are valid. But some of them are, and I can’t deny that just because I liked the movie. That’s not really how it works. I think it’s worth seeing, and I think it has a lot of merit and a lot of good things to say. But it’s got some problems too, and it’s not as good as the first. I’m hoping that the recently greenlit third movie will address the movie’s issues and be the perfect Wonder Woman movie.

Chapter 1: Torturing Our Boi, Naturally
Trevor woke up in a soft bed.
He was relaxed in a way that had his body struggling to react to his initial panic at waking up somewhere that he hadn’t fallen asleep--that place, of course, being Adrian’s creepy dungeon. The sensation was odd enough to have him on alert. 
There were embers glowing in the hearth, and a series of faint creaks like someone was trying to maneuver quietly a few rooms away, and a large window to his left. It was pre-dawn, by the look of the sky, and he was likely on the second floor.
Maybe that wave of magic had knocked him out, and Sypha and Adrian carried him up to bed...but why not their bedroom? In fact, this didn’t look like any bedroom in the castle, even if it was strangely familiar. And why weren’t they there with him, at least one of them, instead of lurking a few rooms away?
Uneasy, he reached for any of the weapons he kept on him. There were none on his person, which would be understandable if Sypha or Adrian had put him to bed, but the weapons also weren’t at the bedside table. Both of them knew him to be paranoid without his weapons near.
Also, he was wearing a nightgown like one he hadn’t in years. Even since being a permanent residence of the castle and not being forced to sleep in his only set of clothes, Trevor would rather sleep naked or with only undergarments.
In his search for his weapons, all he came across was a small dagger beneath his pillow.
It was his dagger, most certainly. Itfit his hand perfectly and had the crest of the Belmont family on its hilt. It was the dagger he was first trained to defend himself with. A Beolmont’s first weapon had always been presented like any normal child might receive a doll, with as much ceremony as their first steps. 
It had also been lost to the fire that took his home and family twelve years prior.
He suddenly recognized the room he was in. It had been his since he was eight, and had moved out of the “nursery” that he and his twin sister had shared since they were infants. Catherine had redecorated the room and it had become hers, and he was left in the smallest room at the farthest end of the hall.
Trevor took a sharp breath. 
Released it.
Took another breath.
What the fuck was going on?
Sypha had warned that the magic of the hidden dungeon had been old and deep, and Adrian had admitted that his father had taken possession of the castle almost five hundred years ago and still hadn’t know all its secrets. Was the magic there primed to...what? Look into his memories and recreate the worst moment(s) of his life?
If that was the case, though, Trevor should be outside and it should be closer to midnight than morning, and it should be snowing. He also shouldn’t have the free will to break the movements he had made before.
So what was this? An elaborate mind trick? Some sort of...interactive vision of a past he tried desperately to forget?
((Or maybe, a small part of him thought, I really am back in the days before that fire. The normal aches from his accumulated injuries and old scars were suspiciously absent, and his old dagger was much too small to fit so well in his should-be-grown-up hands.))
Trevor slipped from the bed, bare feet making contact with the wooden floor. He shivered slightly, involuntarily.
He dressed quickly in clothes he knew were meant for the daily life of a Belmont--for the training, and movement, and practicality their every day demanded--rather than some of the more aristocratic pieces. His muscle memory directed him to the water asin heating by the hearth to wash his face, and some combination of memory and a long-forgotten habit had him smoothing down the bedding. He slipped on his house-shoes and tucked his dagger into his sleeve before leaving the room.
The hall was achingly familiar, lined with doors that lead to his sisters’ rooms. There were a few portraits on the wall of long-dead ancestors, and a few paintings he knew Gabrielle made in her free time. Used to make. Still might make.
This was the family wing of the house. Like no time had passed at all, not years of drinking himself into oblivion or sleeping out in the cold or repressing all memories of home, he knew where everything was.
Louise was at the mouth of the hall, then Gabrielle, then Colette. Rounding around was Trevor’s, then Annette and Eleanore’s, then Catherine’s across from Louise. Trevor’s parents were on the landing. They would be the first line of defense if they had an intruder, Trevor realized now, as well as providing a barrier for children attempting to sneak out.
He skipped the squeaky floorboard and the creaky fourth step that lead to the main part of the house.
“Annette, is that you?”
Trevor froze halfway down the steps, fighting the urge to pull his dagger on his own mother. Or the memory of her, or whatever it was that was happening to him.
“Trevor? What are you doing creeping about so early?”
He turned to see Helaine Belmont standing at the top of the stairs like a spectre of the past, her dark hair braided over one shoulder and still dressed in only a nightdress. She smiled softly at him, a little confused by her youngest. Trevor had been the type to have to be forcibly roused as a child, he recalled now. Usually Louise had been the one to pull him out of bed as just routinely as a daily chore.
Something horrible and bitter clawed its way up his throat.
“What day is it?” he asked, forcing the words to come.
“Wednesday, dear,” answered his mother, confusion giving way to concern. “Why?”
You all burn on a Wednesday night.
I am an orphan on Thursday.
The church wants us all dead.
“What’s wrong Trevor?”
Why couldn’t he just say it? Was this the magic of the dungeon room, forcing a re-living where you feel like you could change things, but always lacked the ability to do so?
His mother was descending toward him, reaching out and despite himself he fell into her embrace. With the stairs and his twelve-year-old height, he was able to bury his face against her chest.
She spoke to him, carding her fingers through his hair. She said assurances, instructed him to breathe, told him everything was alright.
“You’re not real,” he choked out, even as he held onto her.
“Of course I’m real.” Her voice was calm, and strong. “Just remember our check.”
“Your-your favorite-room-” he tried. “Your favorite room is the-the green room.”
“And your favorite weapon is the war hammer,” she answered evenly. And it had been, back when he was twelve and just being allowed to start specialized weapon training. If it was the day he feared it was, he should have been given his first lesson with the whip only a few weeks earlier.
Slowly his breathing slowed so that he wasn’t gasping for air like a drowned man. His mother’s arms remained around him. When was the last time he had been allowed jsut to exist like this? Drawing comfort without feeling as though he had to give some back?
There was movement at the landing that caused him to jump.
It was Annette, looking just as she had before she died. Sixteen or so, always an early riser. She had their father’s curls and the green eyes of their mother, her hair pulled back and her silver staff in hand. Going for an early-morning warmup.
“Morning, Mama. Trevor.” Her eyes lingered over Trevor, undoubtedly trying to suss out what was going on as she squeezed past them to get past.
Their mother responded in kind, her lack of explanation enough to spur Annette on her way.
Once she had disappeared to the back garden, their mother gently asked, “What was all that about, dear?”
Trevor found himself searching for what to say. Could he tell her? What would it accomplish, if he was nothing but a child?
“I-I...I think I might have…”
She remained silent, waiting.
“I-it was a nightmare, I think. So vivid it could have been real.”
“A memory?”
“A vision, maybe. I don’t know.”
Visions were not unheard of within their family, but they were rare and only came at the most dire of times.
She just hummed. “Let’s get something to eat.”
Trevor watched in a daze as his mother, still in her nightgown, shooed the cook away and began to prepare breakfast. The mug of tea she made for him sat before him, leeching warmth into his hands. He couldn’t bring himself to drink it.
One after another his sisters spilled in.
First was Colette yawning, then Gabrielle with too much energy for someone freshly awake, then Annette done with training. Eleanor stumbled in with horrendous bedhead, Catherine right behind, trailed by Louise.
As soon as the last three entered, Catherine squeezed into Trevor’s chair beside him. If he hadn’t felt so far away he was certain he would cry at the press of his twin sister’s body against his side, one he had thought he’d forgotten until he’d abruptly remembered.
Catherine and him had shared a room long past they had to, and they did every lesson together. She used to be the person he told everything to, even the stupid crush he’d had on the gardener’s son.
“Didn’t have to drag you from bed today,” Louise teased, ruffling his hair as she passed.
He didn’t move, couldn’t answer. Their mother had to excuse him, telling them that he’d had a rather frightening nightmare. Catherine pushed herself, if possible, closer.
“Sticky rolls?” Pavel Belmont asked as he entered the now full kitchen. “What’s the occasion?”
Trevor seemed to wake up at the voice of his father. The scent of cinnamon and baking pastry was in the air. The cup between his hands was no warmer than the rest of the room. Catherine lined up against him knee to hip to elbow to shoulder. His mother still in her night clothes while everyone else was dressed. The dagger up his sleeve and his feet that didn’t quite touch the ground. His entire family that had been dead for over a decade standing all around him.
He folded in on himself, a sob falling from his lips unbidden. Catherine startled away to be swiftly replaced by their father.
“What’s wrong-”
“Trevor-”
“Is he-”
His sisters seemed to be trying to say something at once, as Trevor gasped around his sobbing as it all seemed to break at once.
Their mother sternly hushed them and for a few moments all was silent aside from Trevor’s hitched breathes.
She was on Trevor’s other side, then, brushing his hair aside and wiping away the tears spilling down his cheeks.
“Now, then, I think you should tell us about that maybe-vision of yours, yeah?”
Trevor leaned into his father, feeling as his arms tightened just so around him at the prospect of a vision.
“The-the church. They’re gonna come tonight, with a mob. They’re gonna-gonna burn the house down, with-burn it with everyone inside.”
There was a gasp from someone, but Trevor was only picking up steam. It didn’t matter if this was only an illusion, it felt real--so real that he would never be able to live with himself if he didn’t try to save them.
“They’ll come after dark, in the snow. I-I snuck out, to see the first snowfall. I do it sometimes. I had to watch and listen--I couldn’t move I was frozen--and the fire burned for hours. I heard your screaming but they threw something on the fire--they barred the first floor windows and doors and stabbed Eleanore when she tried to jump from the second story--It wasn’t until the next morning when there was nothing left but ash that they pulled out the bodies. And I-I was left all alone in the woods and I knew everyone was dead. I stayed there for days, hoping someone else had gotten out but-”
“Shh, Trevor, it’s alright,” his mother soothed, something frayed in her voice. “Take a deep breathe, dear.”
“We have to leave,” he said frantically, clinging to her wrist. “Before they come, we have to go before they-”
“We will.”
And just like that he slumped like a puppet without its strings.
Many things could still go wrong, of course. The mob would realize quickly that there were no screams coming from the house, or anyone trying to leap from the windows. They could track them, like they tried to track Trevor when they finally realized they were missing one of the children through the mess that was his family home and the bodies which also belonged to the servants. It would be easier to follow all of them immediately rather than him, alone, days later, even if he had been hungry and traumatized.
Hearing that they were aware, though, knowing that things would be different, made all the possibilities bearable.
His mother stood and Trevor saw the frightened faces of his sisters. Even Louise, the eldest, the one who never seemed to be thrown off by the world around her, was shaken.
“Breakfast time, I think,” their mother said with a small clap of her hands. “We have a busy day ahead of us.” 
Their father followed her instructions of securing everyone a fresh sticky roll, tense but not afraid like his children.
“Mother-” Colette began, holding tight to her fork.
“Don’t worry, there is a plan in place for evacuation. There are, of course, our safe houses across the continent, and other places for us to go. Eat. We will be alright now that we have the warning.”
Trevor was too stressed to care much about the strained silence, but he did miss Catherine taking up half his chair.

Spoilers for Netflix’s Castlevania below the cut
I will preface this by saying that I absolutely have not played the video games. I understand that the show does draw from them, so maybe certain things make more sense in that context, but this is based solely on my viewing of the show itself.
Also, these are just my personal rambly feelings, so please do not take offense. You can have your own thoughts and ships.
Y’all what the fuck is going on in Castlevania. I just finished Season 2 and started Season 3 and I’m just like WHAT. How could Sypha and Trevor just abandon Alucard like that? Like, “yeah, we know you just killed your own father in your childhood bedroom and you’re probably experiencing some really intense grief and a lot of complex emotions right now, but we’re gonna just leave you in this old, empty castle full of things that remind you of your dead parents while we go off and have adventures. k Bye :)” Like, okay, maybe I can sort of accept this from Trevor because part of his thing is being emotionally damaged and unavailable, maybe he wouldn’t feel comfortable reaching out to Alucard, but I feel like Sypha should know better. It just feels out of character for her to be so completely unconcerned.
And then Sypha and Trevor just randomly start being a couple and I’m like ???????? Like it’s fine as a pairing, I don’t hate the idea of them being romantically involved, but it’s really out of the blue and also REALLY inappropriate for the circumstances. Like, hello??? Your friend Alucard is really struggling here, this is not the time to go have your fun summer romance or whatever. Also it was a little patronizing and inappropriate for Sypha to pressure Trevor into coming with her on adventures by saying “it’s good for you,” like he’s completely incapable of deciding on his own what’s good for him, but whatever, it probably is good for him, and it’s not an unforgivable offense as long as she truly meant well. (Again, though, it is extra weird that she takes such a strong interest in Trevor’s wellbeing when she’s leaving Alucard completely in the dust.)
But then Season 3 just took things to a whole new level where Alucard is literally in his house going insane and talking to dolls and the dynamic between Trevor and Sypha is...I kinda wanna say toxic heterosexuality. I hope that’s not needlessly provocative but like, it’s this very uncomfortable vibe of like, the man has to be big and stupid and emotionally unavailable and like beer, while the woman gets to be smart and right and constantly make fun of and criticize him. A little playful teasing is one thing, but it feels like Sypha takes it beyond teasing, to the point where she’s actually devaluing Trevor’s perspective and feelings (see “it’s good for you”). Alucard basically calls this out explicitly when he’s talking to the dolls. And the whole “beer is better than sex” thing...idk man, Sypha’s response felt cringey. Like, “How dare you enjoy something more than having sex with me?” ??? People are allowed to like the things they like. Also, seems like y’all been fucking like every night (quite honestly I was kind of floored to find out they were having sex, since again, I really didn’t see any chemistry between them), and he probably hasn’t had a beer in a while. There’s no need to take it personally. Yes, it’s reasonable that she might feel a little hurt, and yes, it’s okay for her to tease him, but something about it just feels immature and even a little possessive or narcissistic. It doesn’t make me love their relationship, basically.
I have a pet theory that Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard make up a carefully balanced ecosystem. All three of them take pot shots at each other, but there’s clearly a dominant tension between Trevor and Alucard that Sypha then has to mediate. Trevor and Alucard fight like cats, and Sypha breaks them up. Also, since it’s usually Alucard picking on Trevor, Sypha gets to play the hero and rescue/defend Trevor from Alucard’s attacks, which makes her feel good about herself as well as closer to Trevor.
But now that Alucard’s taken out of the mix, everything is all messed up. Alucard’s obviously a mess, but so are Trevor and Sypha. Sypha clearly feels very warmly toward Trevor, but without Alucard as an alternate target, all of her gibes and annoyance end up directed at Trevor. And maybe she discovers that her feelings toward him were more complicated than she originally thought when she rushed into this relationship.
Also like...I don’t really know what to say about what’s going on with Hector. It’s super fucked up, and no one is coming to save him.
I want to be clear that this isn’t intended as condemnation of the writing on the show. Media can and should show bad/questionable behavior, bad/complicated relationships, and tragic circumstances, especially among the protagonists. It’s how the show treats these things that matters.
And like, the point of media is to make you feel things. And boy, did these choices make me feel some things. Mostly confusion and indignation and distress, but those are valid emotions too.
I’m genuinely curious to see where this goes. I assume that Alucard finds his way back into the fray somehow. I have no idea what’s going to happen between Trevor and Sypha. I kinda want them to break up. I didn’t see any real chemistry between them before, and I’m not really seeing any now either. But who knows.

The 62 2020 Movies Releases I Watched During 2020 Ranked

Like the awkward title says, I’m going to rank (and talk about) all the 2020 movies I watched in 2020. This is not meant as any empirical list of what was best, it’s ranked by what I liked the least to the most, and my main criteria is what kind of impact it had on me and/or how much I enjoyed the experience of watching it.
Little bit about myself, I went to art school for animation, then after art school I went to a community college where I studied screenwriting. Never ended up pursuing either thing professionally, but I still write screenplays in my free time and read screenwriting books and listen to screenwriting podcasts. I'm the type of person that loves special features, seeks out behind the scenes information and director interviews, and watch youtube videos analyzing films. I love film, and thinking about film and talking about film and sharing the films I like, and maybe one day making films of my own, who knows.
Ranking and reviewing 62 movies was a more ambitious and challenging task than I anticipated, I rearranged this list swapping titles back and forth so many times, and then I’d remember a movie I forgot I watched and have to add that and figure out where it ranks. I started this on January 1st and am just now ready to post it on the 17th, I was still switching rankings right up until posting this. Even looking at it now there are some kinda want to switch but I’ve accepted that this is more or less arbitrary, lol. 
The more I learn about film and what goes into creating a movie the more lenient I am about them. It’s not like I’m never critical of films, but I try to consider both the good and the bad of a movie instead of thinking in a binary of films are either amazing or trash. Some of these films aren’t great, but I typically still enjoyed them to some degree. Except Mulan, lol. I’m sorry Mulan. Speaking of Mulan...

I'm going to try to say something nice about all these movies even if I didn't like them at all. So... I like the cast, and there are some nice visual moments. I actually was looking forward to this movie before reviews started coming out, it has 2 of the martial arts G.O.A.T.s in it, Donnie Yen and Jet Li, and also Jason Lee as the bad guy, so I figured it might at the very least have some decent action, but they were all underutilized. There’s not a single moment in the film where I felt anything at all. I think all these Disney live-action remakes are doing is making a case for how effective animation is for storytelling.

61. Color Out of Space
I heard a lot of good things about this movie, and it’s really cool visually, and I love Nicolas Cage always, but I really couldn’t get into it. I guess my main issue is that it starts off already too campy for any of to the Lovecraftian horror to really hit. It felt like a B-movie with great production value, and maybe that’s what they were going for? I really wanted to like this but I really just did not feel invested in anything going on, did not relate to anyone in the family, so I don’t think I got much out of it besides the cool visuals.

60. Bloodshot
I think the main flaw of this movie is that is that Vin Diesel was a producer on it, and Vin Diesel should be kept away from making creative decisions on movies. How Did This Get Made did a great podcast episode on this movie. It’s absolute nonsense, it has a couple of cool sequences and special effects in it, and Lamorne with a British accent is great, he’s the main redeeming value of this movie.

59. The Midnight Sky
It seems like this movie wants to be Interstellar, it’s structured in a very similar way, but it just didn’t quite have that same emotional punch. It looks very good, it’s well-acted, it has it’s moments.

58. The New Mutants
It's not as much of a trainwreck as people make it out to be in my opinion, I think the cast is good and it has some good character interactions, but it mostly suffers from the fact that it's way too predictable, from the beginning you're way ahead of the characters, and it doesn't help that they're in this confined setting so there's not a lot for them to actually do. But I appreciate the attempt at using mutants to do a horror breakfast club thing, good concept.

57. Vampires vs The Bronx
Vampires as a gentrifiers taking over the hood, great idea. Mero is in it, the brand is brolic. It was a fun set up, but it was neither funny enough or scary enough in my opinion. The vampires die so easily it's like okay whatever. It's like a really long Goosebumps episode.

56. Freaky
I don't think the execution lived up to the great concept, but Vince Vaughan was really great in those sincere moments playing a teenage girl. Horror fans will appreciate the gory kills. I'm not going to spoil anything but I do think there are some narrative issues that keep this from being stronger than it could've been. If you made the killer a creepy janitor at the school or even one of the teachers, then I think that would've created more interesting situations.

55. Eurovision
I love Will Ferrell, I even love some of his flops like Casa De Mi Padre and Kicking and Screaming, and even the House I think had a lot of really funny moments. This was definitely one of the least funny movies he's done to me. I think the director David Dobkin couldn't commit to being silly the way Adam McKay can cause there's a lot of this movie that just has no jokes, and the movie is over 2 hours long which isn't normal for comedies so you spend a lot of time watching unfunny scenes and extended musical numbers.

54. The Wrong Missy
I'm not a big fan of most Happy Madison movies, the jokes are very hit or miss for me. I'm a big fan of Lauren Lapkus though so I watched it to support her, and she plays an absolute psycho in this. It's so over the top it's like this character is not a human being, but I have to admit there are a few moments where she made me laugh pretty loud. I'd never watch this movie again, but maybe I'd look up certain parts on youtube.

53. The Platform
High concept dystopian sci-fi horror. Reminds me of the Cube. It's one of those things that makes you think about what you'd do in the same situation. It's a very on the nose allegory, so by the end of it my only takeaway was "Yeah, it really be like that."

52. Archenemy
Another high concept movie. Joe Mangienello is good in it, but Glenn Howerton and Paul Scheer are my favorite parts of the movie, it's fun to see comedy actors play bad guys. My main problem with the movie was that I did not find the teen character to be interesting or relatable at all, in fact he can be kind of obnoxious. In his introductory scene he's REALLY bothering this random guy minding his own business, not respecting his boundaries at all. Then the rest of the movie is about him exploiting a homeless man and being really pushy for likes on some app, and he doesn't really have a character arc. Also wasn't a big fan of the animated sequences but I forgive that knowing this was a low budget movie and those sequences were done by a team of just 3 people.

51. Power
Jamie Foxx is great. I think he makes almost anything he's in watchable to some degree. The idea of this movie is fun but I think the action sequences are kinda underwhelming, but Jamie makes it worth watching in my opinion.

50. Birds of Prey
This movie was all style and absolutely no substance. When your main character doesn't have a solid purpose or goal you're really just watching shit happen, and that can be okay if the shit that's happening is occassionally fun or funny, but it doesn't really make for a memorable story in my opinion.

49. Wonder Woman 84
The most panned movie of 2020 maybe? It's got flaws for sure and some narrative choices I just can't understand why they made. It has some fun performances though and I ultimately appreciated that our superhero wins not by using her fists but by appealing to goodness. I feel like you rarely see that kind of idealism any more. It may not be realistic but I think that's one of the things fantasy is good for, showing us a way things could be better to strive for. But yeah, the Steve Trevor things was fucking weird, why'd they do that? And neither Steve or Diana seem concerned with about this random guy's fate. I'd probably rate this film higher if they had Steve simply appear out of thin air, I mean why not? It's magic. But I loved Kristen Wig and Pedro Pascal in this. Pedro is performing with his whole body, did he film this after season 1 of the Mandolorian? Maybe being under that helmet for a season made him want to be really expressive. The films overall kinda campy but I didn't necessarily mind that.

48. Peninsula
Sequel to the already classic Train to Busan, this film decides the up the scale, which is what sequels often do, but I think it was a mistake in this instance. This is more of an over the top action movie than a character-driven horror film like the first. There's a climactic Mad Max-esque car chase scene that is almost entirely CGI. I don't think it was a bad movie, it's an okay popcorn flick, but it definitely doesn't live up to the original.

47. The Old Guard
In terms of action I don't think it did anything interesting, but I like how they explored how horrific and heartbreaking it would be to be immortal. Coming to terms with your own mortality is a tough thing to do, but we often don't consider the idea that death is a blessing we take for granted.

46. Sputnik
A Russian sci-fi thriller about a young doctor being tasked with trying to figure out how to separate an alien parasite from a Cosmonaut that's returned from earth. Good performances, creepy vibe, and lots of interesting questions about ethics. It has a sort of epilogue ending with a reveal I didn't quite understand the significance to the story, but didn't take away from either. Solid.

45. The Invisible Man
Fun sci-fi thriller about toxic abusive relationships and gaslighting. Elizabeth Moss is great in it and my favorite sequences are before her character actually catches on and you have moments where the camera is just focusing on a random place, very creepy and effective.

44. Sonic the Hedgehog
Personally I would've preferred a fully animated film taking place in Sonic's world. I don't know why they always feel like they need to make these movies about human characters and then spend a lot of time having to hide your CG character and having people do comical reactions to them. It feels very played out to me. BUT Jim Carrey is great in this, of course. Jim Carrey is the reason to watch this movie. He makes the movie. And it goes without saying thank God they changed that character design.

43. 2067
What I liked about this dystopian future is that the cause was basically everything. War, famine, ruining the environment, pandemics, just all our collective fuckery has resulted in a world where the human race is on the verge of extinction, plants are extinct, and oxygen is synthetic. Enter time travel, a young man is tasked with traveling into the future to bring back the solution to saving the human race. Very timely obviously. I liked it.

42. Monsters of Man
Some asshole tech bros let some killer robots loose on a remote southeast asian village as a trial run. It has lots of flaws but I give it some leeway because this is the first film of a guy who wrote, directed and was the cinematographer by himself, he didn't have a huge budget or much experience, so it's hard to expect perfection. My biggest criticism is that the film centers a white guy living in this village and some westerner medics, not the actual Asian people of the village. Could've been so much more of interesting commentary about racism and eurocentrism dropping these robots in a village of brown people no one will miss just for practice. That aside though I think it was a solid enough thriller and the robots looked pretty good.

41. Family Romance LLC
An interesting movie about a Japanese entrepreneur who has a business where he'll play whatever role in your life you need. Father, husband, coworker, etc there's a scene where someone even pays him to be scolded in his place by his boss. The main thrust of the film though is him playing the role of a girl's absentee father, pretends to reconnect with her and take her out on the town for activities. It's shot very documentary style, and there are a mixture of first time actors and non-actors. Sometimes there are long awkward conversations that feel just as awkward as real life. I really liked the premise, and the only thing that keeps it from being higher on my list is it doesn't have a strong enough conflict nor does it really have a satisfying conclusion.

40. Over the Moon
Directorial debut of animation legend Glen Keane, I really liked this visually. It was sufficiently enjoyable, but it doesn't have that emotional gut punch that Pixar or Disney films tend to have. But I guess cartoons don't NEED to make you bawl your eyes out to be good. I think there were some missed opportunities narratively, like I guess this is spoilery so just scroll ahead if you don't want to know, but she gains a step brother that she doesn't like and doesn't want to spend time with, once the adventure starts on the Moon they get separated very early on, and don't ge reunited until towards the end, but she somehow now cares about him and considers him her brother. I didn't feel like that was really earned, they should've been together throughout the adventure getting to know each other. But I otherwise liked the story aside from that nitpick. Loved the colors of this movie, almost everything in the moon world is luminescent which provides some nice visuals. Hope to see Glen direct more in the future.

39. The Croods 2
Nothing revolutionary but it has some solid physical comedy and great voice acting. All of Nicolas Cage's overacting is perfect for animation, and I liked Peter Dinklage as Mr. Betterman as well. There's a lot going on thematically but it all works pretty cohesively.

38. #ALIVE
Another Korean zombie thriller. I really liked this because I felt like as far as zombie outbreaks go this is the most realistic scenario. Once you realize what's going on you will just stay in your house rather than risk going outside and fighting zombies. But that poses the problem of a limited supply of food and water. The main thrust of the movie is not how this character survives though it's about him trying to retain his will to live. It's the perfect pandemic isolation allegory.

37. Love and Monsters
It looked kinda corny but I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I like Dylan O'Brien, I love Tom Holland as Peter Parker but I've always felt like Dylan O'Brien would've been a great choice too, he has a good everyman relatable quality. There's also a dog in the movie that I loved. Put a dog in peril in a movie and I will be on the edge of my seat guaranteed. It's a fun movie with some interesting creatures in it and a solid character arc for our main protagonist.

36. Extraction
I love the trend of stunt coordinators directing films. That's the main reason why the John Wick series is so good, and the reason why this also has some very solid action. Nothing crazy here in terms of story or themes, everything is an excuse for Chris Hemsworth to fuck people up and it delivers on that. There's one scene where he slaps around some kids attacking him that I found hilarious as well. Fully welcoming an Extraction 2.

35. Save Yourselves
A couple decides to take a break from social media and get away to a cabin outside the city. While they're disconnected from the world an alien invasion occurs, furry little basketball sized poofs. This movie was pretty funny. I'm a little ambivalent about the ending but I enjoyed these hipsters arguing about what to do about aliens.

34. Bill and Ted Face the Music
A most bodacious movie. Fun gags and a robot that steals the show. It's not as good as the first 2 but I don't think that's any surprise. I think it borrows a little bit too much from the previous films, like the collecting legendary musicians thing, could've done without that. It was a fun movie though, and the daughters really worked.

33. An American Pickle
Seth Rogen playing an orthodox Jew who's been preserved in pickle juice for 100 years and his modern day app developer grandson. I think this may be Seth Rogen's best acting role, as silly as this movie is he's kind of endearing as this character from 100 years aro, and as the grandson he's a lot more understated than he usually is in movies.

32. Tenet
Tenet! Is it controversial that this is not higher up on the list? I really like Nolan's films, actually been a fan since watching his first film Following in a film class. Nolan likes playing with time in his movies so it was inevitable that he'd do something that addresses it very directly eventually. I love the time travel genre and I think this is one of the most ambitious and unique approaches to it to ever done. I actually braved theaters to see this because I did not want to miss the opportunity to see it on the big screen. I did it as safely as possible and booked a reserved seating theater where I knew I wouldn't be sitting by anyone, had a mask, gloves, antibacterial gell on deck, sanitized my seat with wipes, etc, there only 2 other people in the theater all of us sitting way for from each other. Weirdest moviegoing experience I've ever had but glad I saw it on the big screen because the visual spectacle of this is excellent. The reason it's not higher on the list is because as conceptually cool as it is as I did not feel invested. Just on a story level having a character we know very little about pursuing a goal he knows very little about for no clearly defined reason makes it feel like... we're just watching events unfold as opposed to watching a character-driven story. There's a moment at the end that you can tell was meant to be an emotional moment, but I felt nothing. They try to introduce some emotional stakes with the female character, but idk, since it wasn't tied to the inciting incident it felt more like a b-plot than fundamental to the story. So it was a really fun cool looking puzzle, more like watching a cool Rube Goldberg machine, but not something I really thought much about after it was over.

31. Guns Akimbo
I really have been enjoying Daniel Radcliffe's post-Harry Potter career, he'll do some solid dramas he seems to prefer doing fun weird shit like Swiss Army Man, Horns, his role on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, etc. This is in that vein of fun weird shit, a guy who gets guns bolted to his hands and is running around the city in a robe trying to survive essentially a real life video game. A lot of the movies lower on this list had fun concepts but were lacking in execution, but this is one that is just as fun as the idea sounds, even more fun actually, it's funny, the action is good, and there are some great visuals. I found it all around enjoyable.

30. Let Them All Talk
Glen Close as a celebrated author who invites her nephew and 2 estranged best friends on a cruise with her.  It's a very light-hearted movie with some underlying conflicts that the characters are afraid to address head on. Glen Close is great, obviously, she plays this pretentious self-important woman with affectations but is still likable and warm. It's a fairly pleasant almost slice-of-life until the 3rd act where everything comes together. To me it was a movie about communication, saying what you mean, saying what you feel, and those unspoken assumptions of what those around you are thinking or feeling about you. I know I can relate to the idea of wanting an apology from someone who might not even be cognizant of the fact that you feel slighted by them, or vice versa finding out someone's had a long standing problem with you when you thought you were cool. One sided grudges do no one any good.

29. True History of the Kelly Gang
I've heard of Ned Kelly, but I've never seen the Heath Ledge or Mick Jagger movies about him and I don't know much about him other than he's a famous Australian outlaw and something of a folk hero to some. The performances and cinematography if this are great. George MacKay from 1917 is the lead and he's amazing, sometimes vulnerable and soft, other times a madman. It spends a lot of time in his childhood and the child actor who plays Ned is great as well. It's gritty and sometimes surreal in it's imagery. From what I can gather previous films seemed to focus more on what happened with him and his gang, while this movie seems to focuses more on everything in his life that led up to him becoming who he is and forming that gang. Like a 3rd of the movie is spent in his childhood, and once the gang is actually formed things move at a pretty brisk pace, seemingly skimming over the exploits of the gang to the conclusion. The film feels very raw and gritty and very fuck the police which I always appreciate.

28. Lucky Grandma
A stubborn grandma in New York's chinatown gets her fortunte read and is told that she's going to be very lucky and come into a fortune, she then comes into possession of a bunch of money that belongs to a gang and she decides to try to keep it feeling it's owed to her by the universe. A funny crime drama with the unlikeliest of protagonists.

27. Da 5 Bloods
Spike Lee is an icon but he can honestly be a little hit or miss for me. I don't always enjoy every choice he makes, for instance he uses real footage of war attrocities in this, and it's really upsetting to see REAL people, including children, be killed, when you're not expecting that. I understand it's meant to be upsetting, but it does make the movie something I'll probably never rewatch. Spike Lee's films to me can also feel at times heightened to the point that it feels a little cheesy (Miracle At St Anna), and there moments in this that kinda took me out of it to be honest, but overall I enjoyed it. The performances were great, Delroy Lindo in my opinion is one of the most underrated actors of all time, he's just always good no matter what he's in, everyone else in it is good too, but of course I have to mention Chadwick Boseman who was great. At the end of the day it gave me a lot to think about in terms or race, war, America, forgiveness, trauma and so many other things.

26. The Devil All The Time
There's a LOT going on in this movie, maybe a little too much, it's like 2 or 3 movies smashed into one, but... I really liked it, and that's probably because Tom Holland is so good in it.  Really liked Robert Pattinson in it too. I can’t really think of more to say about it say I won’t. Next movie.

25. Bad Education
A true crime movie about school district officiala who stole from the budget of a highschool. Hugh Jackman is great in this. I loved Jackman as Wolverine, but now that he's done with that I'm excited to see him other stuff cause he's always interesting to watch; The Fountain, Prisoners, The Prestige, he's always solid. I enjoyed this, it was done with nuance, it doesn't let them off the hook for what they did but it doesn't paint them as absolute monsters either. I really have to ask myself, if I could get away with stealing money that no one would miss... I don't know, I think I'd not do it out of fear not altruism, lol.

24. My Octopus Teacher
This is a documentary on Netflix about a diver who immerses himself in the world of underwater life and documents the life of an octopus. It's really beautiful, both in terms of visuals and in content. There's not a lot to talk about because it's fairly straightforward, but it was really fascinating to learn about this octopus and see the bond they mutually formed, and again I can't talk about how great this movie looks, it's like you're in a different world. This is something I could put in and mute while I draw just for the ambiance.

23. Kajillionaire
A quirky dramedy about a family of really obtuse poor scam artists. As absurd as their behaviour is I can totally imagine a trio of weirdos like this living in Los Angeles ( I can say that cause it's my hometown and where I lived most of my life. It's Evan Rachel Wood's best role, I never would've imagined her doing something like this but she's great as "Old Dolio". It's funny, at time sad but not in a hammy melodramatic way, and I feel it had the perfect ending.

22. The Gentleman
Guy Ritchie doing what he does best. It's fun, stylish, witty, has layers and twists and reveals. Everybody's good in it. It doesn't have anything poignant to say, but it's fun to watch the entire time

21. Run
A thriller about a wheelchair bound teen who suspects her mother is drugging her and tries to get to the bottom of it. You can tell this director is a Hitchcock fan because it definitely has that Rear Window vibe but takes it a step further, and in many ways it's even shot and paced like Hitchcock. The lead actress is actually wheelchair bound herself so it really adds to the realism of all the things she does in this film. Oh, and Sarah Paulson is the mom, when is Sarah Paulson ever not good?

20. Horse Girl
Alison Brie is an awkward neurotic woman getting over recent grief and a history of mental illness in her family, she starts to have weird dreams and then notices people from her dreams in real life, starts blacking out and having gaps in time, and starts to believe it's due to alien abduction conspiracy. Is she losing her mind or is it really happening? Alison Brie is really really good in this, and she co-wrote it too, it has a lot of moments where you really feel sorry for her or scared for her and you start to question what's real yourself.

19. Swallow
I  found this movie really fascinating, it's like what if you turned one of those My Strange Addiction episodes on TLC into a movie. It's about this woman who ostensibly, at least from appearances, has the perfect life (at least by societal standards), she came from nothing and is now housewife to a rich successful man, and behaves almost like a Stepford wife. Then develops a compulsion to swallow inedible things, like marbles and batteries and thumbtacks, which is a real condition called pica. Its the kind of movie that gives you a lot to think about but no easy answers.

18. Time to Hunt
A Korean heist thriller set in the near future. A bunch of childhood friends rob the wrong person and have an Anton Chigurh-esque killer sent after them to retrieve the money and kill them. It's a really tense cat and mouse thriller with good performances. The ending seemed to turn a lot of people off based on a lot of youtube comments I read, but I didn't mind it. My only real gripe is that they set this in the near future but aside from some imagery in the beginning it doesn't seem to come into play that much, this all could've taken place in modern day or even the past with no alteration of the story. I think the future setting was more just for some social commentary that maybe went over my head a little bit because I'm not from Korea, but I think if they were going to do near future they could've added some futuristic weapons or something. But that's just nitpicking, while the future setting didn't add to the story much it didn't take away from it either.

17. Tigertail
As I get older one of my worse fears is making decisions that I will regret for the rest of my life, so this movie really hit home as a cautionary tale. It's a kind of quietly devastating movie. There's no huge tragic horrific even, just a huge miscalculation. Decades of your life of work and unhappiness go by and all you can do is wonder what things could've been. I also especially appreciated the cinematography and music of this film.

16. Mother
It's been a while since I hated a character this much, but this titular mother really pissed me off. She's a neglectful mother who only sees her son as a tool, but he sticks by her cause he loves her. It's definitely not a fun movie to watch, but it made me feel a lot and meditate on the idea of love and whether it in itself has innate value.

15. Call
I went into this movie cold, having no idea what it was really about other than that it was a thriller that revolved around a woman getting mysterious calls. I'm glad I had seen no trailers and did not know the gist of the plot becuase it went places I really was not expecting. One of the most fun thrillers I've seen in a while. So, I'm not going to talk about the movie but what I will say is that Jeon Jong-seo, who played the woman in Burning is in this, she was great in Burning and she's great in this. After watching it I googled her to see what else she's been in that I can watch and this is only her 2nd film. Apparently Burning was her first audition EVER and she BOOKED IT! Like, one a million success story right? But she deserves it cause she's great and I look forward to seeing what else she does.

14. Possessor
This was directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the son of David Cronenberg, big shoes to fill, and I think he's going to fill them fine cause this is already a cult classic in my opinion. The visuals in this, which look like they were mainly created with practical and in camera effects. There is some very graphic very realistic violence in this. The movie is about an assassin who works for an organization and uses some type of scientific process to "possess" people to carry out hits. When she's in a body for too long who's in control starts to blur. It's really fucking trippy, like a fucked up Black Mirror episode.

13. Borat 2
Been a fan of Sacha since the old Da Ali G Show days when Borat was just a side character. I'm amazed with out Sacha can stay in character the way he does, especially when later on in the movie he shelters in place with some Qanon conservatives with who knows how long staying in character. Maybe they'll reveal they were paid actors who knows, but whatever I fucking laughed a lot at this movie. There's a black woman in this movie that I hope to god was not an actress cause I loved her and her reactions so much. It was a breath of fresh air to watch something that's just goofy in 2020 because it wasn't a good year for comedy. As much as I love film sometimes I got a little fatigue from watching so many things with very heavy themes, this also had heavy themes it was satirizing, but also chimp pornstar jokes, so..  a fun time.

12. A Sun
A drama about a family's eldest son going to juvenile detention for his involvement in a violent crime. We see how his father, his mother, his brother and his pregnant girlfriend all deal with this. I found it very engaging. My only gripe is that there are some moments of levity where they use this really generic comedy music score it and it really takes you out of the film. No music at all is better than bad generic music. Other than that I really loved it and the ending is great. I really thought this would end up in my top 10 but the following films just had more personal relevance or were more fun to watch.

11. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
R.I.P. Chadwick Boseman, this movie is like an acting showcase for him, he has so many great monologues here, the ending really took the wind out of me. It's also packed with really still relevant commentary on race.

10. Onward
You already expect a Pixar movie to make you cry, but this came from angle I was NOT expecting and I bawled hard at this. This movie was so applicable to my life experience it's like they specifically engineered it to make me personally cry. Honestly there are better movies lower on this list, but movies are just like any other art, when a song touches you on a personal level it doesn't need to have complex instrumentation cause it's how it made you feel that matters.

09. Palm Springs
A comedy released during a pandemic about trying to find stimulation and meaning when every day is the same thing? Ya don't say! Another take on Groundhog Day, which at this point I feel like it's its on genre with the amount of times the concept has been done, but I'm not complaining, I typically enjoy a good time loop movie (or show; Russian Doll). I don't know what else to say besides that it's really funny and Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti are both charming and great in it.

08. Scare Me
This movie was funny, creepy, the performances were great, and it's just really unique and clever. Written, directed, produced, and starring Josh Ruben, who I know primarily does really idiosyncratic "impressions" on instagram. It's 2 people alone in a cabin telling each other scary stories, they don't cut away to the stories you just watch them act it out. 4 people in the cast, one location, and it still manages to be a fun ride of a movie and manages to touch on some good themes in the overall story. I really hope to see Josh Ruben direct more films because I think he's really creative.

07. Ride Your Wave
A romantic comedy about a woman trying to find joy and purpose in her life. I often go into movies very cold, so I didn't know much about what this movie was about, just knew that it was from an animation studio and director that I really respected. It's very beautiful, very grounded, until it's not. Kind of movie that breaks your heart so it can uplift you later.

06. Uncle Frank
I really did not expect a lot from movie, not that I thought it would be bad, I just thought it be your middle of the road movie. It's about a teenage girl who really looks up to her uncle who she learns is a closeted gay man, in an era where that was potentially dangerous to be. They go on a road trip home when his father dies and learn about each other and themselves, it sounds kinda cookie cutter, but it really surprised me. Paul Bettany is so very good in this, and it made me cry. Easy way to get on high on this list is to make me cry lol.

05. Children of the Sea
This film had to be in my top 5 because I'm an animation nerd and this is one of the most beautiful animated films ever. Ever. It's right up there with Akira and the Ghibli catalogue, and the works of Satoshi Kon, and all the Disney movies and everything else. It focuses on details and nuances in a really gorgeous way. The story is VERY ambiguous and gets very metaphysical towards the end, the climax is like watching an acid trip. It's about a girl who meet 2 young boys who have adapted to living underwater, and they form a bond, and then... uh... there's no way I can concisely explain it. The creator has said it's not supposed to be understood logical, instead it's supposed to be felt. There's a lot of symbolism and metaphor, it's very philosophical and explores themes of connection and the cycle of life. It's produced by Studio 4°C, which is my favorite animation studio because they really push the envelope, they're responsible for Mind Game, Tekkonkinkreet, and the recent Mutafukaz, and other, if you've never heard of any of those definitely look them up, they're unlike any anime you've ever watched before. Anyway, beautiful movie and the cryptic plot allows for you to rewatch it multiple times and take different things away from it. I can't wait to own it on blu-ray.

04. 37 Seconds
I saw this very early in the year and love it. It's about a young woman with cerebal palsy who is also an aspiring hentai artist trying to get laid. Her mother who takes care of her like a child smothers her, so it's not only about trying to get laid but trying to have some independence. Firstly the performance of this woman who actually does have cerebral palsy and is a first time actor is so natural and endearing, secondly there are things they portray with an uncomfortable amount of realism and awkwardness that it really draws you in to the nitty gritty of her reality and what it can be like for someone who is wheelchair bound to try to have sexual experiences. I like that there were 2 films this year about characters in wheelchairs that used unknown actresses that face the same things their characters do, it adds to the authenticity of either film. Films like this are why I think diversity in film is not just about doing something for the demographic you're depicting but also giving everyone else not of that demographic new unique stories and perspectives.

03. Soul
I guess spoilers if you haven't seen this because it's easier to talk about why I liked it if I talk specifically about the plot. I wasn't expecting much from this when the initial trailer dropped, it made it seem like it was going to largely take place in this imaginary soul place with these blue things, and for most of the first act it seemed like that's what it was going to be, but when they come back to earth and the story really starts I really started enjoying it. This movie tricks you into thinking the film is about finding or fulfilling your purpose, only to throw a curveball that living life in and of itself is the "purpose", and this movie resonated so much with thoughts that were already on my mind. I relate so much to Joe as a creative person myself with so many unfulfilled dreams, at 36yrs old, having to put many of my goals on the backburner just to survive, and generally having that feeling that I'm still waiting to live life because I'm not fulfilling my "purpose". Sure reaching for goals is great, but I think our culture breeds this idea that happiness is a destination, an accomplishment, a certain amount of recognition, a monetization of your passion. I really loved how the film depicted that there's a dark side to focusing on your passions and how it can become a source of stress and unhappiness. This movie is just about savoring life itself, which people have been expressing through platitudes since forever but this film illustrated it in a way that words fail at, and that's what makes film such a great form of art.

02. Sound of Metal
This movie had one of the best trailers of 2020, I couldn't wait to watch this movie. FIrst of all I love RIz Ahmed and think he's an underrated and underutilized actor, he's fucking amazing in this, he needs an Oscar nom FOR SURE. His frustration is so palpable and he feels so natural in this movie. It follows a metal punk drummer who loses his hearing and goes to stay in a deaf community to acclimate. One thing I think is absolutely brilliant about this movie is the sound design. I'm not deaf so I can't speak from any type of experience, but they try to replicate what going deaf sounds like, what the audiologist tests sound like, what hearing aids and cochlear implants sound like, it's very immersive. I almost think of it like a companion piece to Soul, cause I had almost the same take away, it's just coming from it at a different angle.

01. I'm Thinking Of Ending Things
Okay, so I’m going to have a lot to say about this movie.
Maybe a very controversial pick for my number one because so many people absolutely hated this movie, lol. I am biased given that I'm a huge fan of Charlie Kaufman, he's my favorite screenwriter, and his films have only gotten weirder and weirder, so I know to expect the unexpected when going into one of his films. I can understand how this would be an offputting experience if you're expecting the conventions of normal narrative structure. It was surprising and perplexing to me how this film unfolded but I've watched non-narrative and experimental films before so I was intrigued rather than frustrated. You think it's about a woman who is thinking of breaking up with her boyfriend as they head to meet his parents. Once we get to his childhood home things start getting surreal, and that surrealism just escalates to the point where you realize this film is not at all attempting to depict reality and doesn't even have any continuity. This is the most a movie has ever felt like one of my dreams. I don't know how other people dream but this was so much like every weird nightmare I've ever had where I feel trapped in a situation. 
There's a scene where the family is talking about art, the dad says he hates abstract art because it takes no skill, he prefers paintings that look like photographs because that takes real skill, the son asks why make a painting look like a photograph when you can just take a photograph, the woman states she paints pictures of landscapes and tries to imbue them with a sense of interiority, capturing the way she feels, the dad asks how can a landscape be sad if you don't have a person in it looking sad. I felt like this was a bit of meta commentary on the film itself. After I watched this movies I had my own theories, I watched some analysis videos on youtube that confirmed a lot of my ideas and gave me insight on other parts of the film, I watched the film again and formulated more ideas, it's so dense with things to project meaning onto and interpret it. I went on instagram and ended up having lengthy discussions about what the film meant both with people who loved it and hated it. Everybody I spoke with had slightly different interpretations and takeaways. One woman who initially did not like it came away with an appreciation for it after we had a lengthy discussion about it's meaning. 
All of this is why it's my favorite film of the year, not only did I relate to it on a personal level because I'm in a stage of my life where I'm approaching middle ages and afraid I'm going to end up like the guy in this film, but I can't remember the last time a film led to such meaningful conversation about life, death, love, mental health, loneliness, trauma, etc. So like the scene where they're talking about art, I think this movie is neither intended to be abstract or realistic, it's supposed to be imbued with a sense of interiority. I know I sound way pretentious right now, but I just really appreciated Charlie Kaufman for making something unabashedly expressionist and serving it up to mainstream audiences. I really feel like I grow as a person and an artist every time I watch one of his films.

So there ya go. That’s it. That concludes this arbitrary exercise in ranking the movies i saw last year, thank you for wasting your time on this, lol. I think it was a very good year for movies. 
If there was a movie you were expecting to see on the list and it’s missing I just didn’t get to it in 2020, I may do an unranked follow up list of 2020 movies I missed in 2020, maybe.

ALRIGHT, SO, LET’S ADDRESS THE DULLAHAN IN THE ROOM. It goes without saying this post contains Castlevania Season 3 spoilers.
So, Season 3. The weakest, really. By far. I still overall and barely enjoyed watching it, but it is easily the weakest. Now, in the greater scheme of things, maybe this was just a bold move, maybe when Season 4 comes out, we’ll only look back at it for what it is: A transitory set of episodes leading somewhere. Right now, in the present? We can be far less generous.
It felt, quite simple, very weird and aimless. I think the only thing worthy of note here, in the present, is, hilariously enough, Isaac’s arc. Isaac, of all people. Now, I love Netflix!Isaac, and I love what we’re exploring with him. But, I think we should’ve been able to see more with the protagonists simultaneously, you see? It’s not like we had any shortage of screen time, but… What everyone else did felt pretty aimless and meaningless.
Now, as I said, Isaac’s arc is really good. I love how it’s progressing, I love his experiences, I love him. I’d say he’s a really good change in every way from his PS2 incarnation.
Trevor and Sypha’s arc felt… Disjointed. It felt very slow for what could’ve ended in two-three episodes. It just feels a bit unnatural, if you ask me, to have Mister and Miss Beatdown patiently scope out actual satanists instead of just barging in and absolutely beating the shit out of them. I’m glad we saw Saint Germain! Probably the highlight of that arc. I just think that otherwise it was a very drawn out nothing otherwise. You can present to the viewer that the land is still fucked up without spending the entire season slowburning like that, especially when it feels out of character.
Hector’s arc, ooph, ok, I have thoughts here, so bear with me: I’m hopeful it will turn into something great down the road. I WANT to believe this is all groundwork for when eventually Hector has his big “I’ve Had ENOUGH” scene and just absolutely fucking wilds out. Unlike “Kickboxing God And Walking Arsenal” PS2 Hector, however, Twink Hector is a weak baby who doesn’t know how to fight directly… But he still has the signature Hector willpower. He’s a weak baby by himself, but he still tried to attack and threaten Lenore. Sure, all it got him was yet another brutal asswhooping, but that’s who Hector is: The One That Gets In Fistfights With Supernatural Creatures (ever think about how Hector wields a sword in exactly one cutscene in Curse of Darkness, and in the rest of the game’s cutscenes, he’s not only wielding no weapon, but also shown to be using hand to hand combat techniques? Including when he beats Isaac? Implying his canon weapon is deadass fist weapons? I think about this a lot). I want to be hopeful that this is all groundwork for the moment in which Hector finally sees Lady Luck’s smile and aaaaaabsolutely 70 Million Power Muscle Sparks Carmilla, Lenore, maybe Isaac, and all who dare stand in his demon-fueled path of anger and revenge. Probably by summoning some really badass demon army who does all that for him, but still. I want to be hopeful, and so, I will wait to see what happens with his arc in the future. I am an optimist, after all… But not a hopeless one: If I see that the future seasons fail to deliver any sort of satisfactory development or conclusion to Hector’s tale, I will be the first to denounce it and dunk on Netflixvania, mark my words.
Aaaaaaaand…

And… Alucard’s arc.
What the fuck was that.
Aimless. Pointless. Went quite literally nowhere. I was super on board with it right until they put the bracelet on him. It felt so forced, suddenly, these two have deep seated complexes about betrayal? That never once came up before? Not even a hint? Ok, the closest thing to a hint was Taka being like “He’s hiding stuff from us, I KNOW it”, but… In the context of the scene? It could’ve meant a number of other things as well. And, I mean, it’s not like Alucard was not teaching them ANYTHING. Yes, he was taking his time, but we are even shown he’s teaching them really valuable things like “use and master a long weapon, because being close to a vampire is exactly where you don’t wanna be” and, you know, access to the Entire Wikipedia Of Monster Killing AKA Leon Belmont’s Wet And Wild Repository. Where the fuck did that come from, then? Suddenly they hate Alucard? And then we get the obligatory shot suggesting Alucard will become Bad Vlad 2: Revenge Of The Impaler? Look, I’m fine with creative liberties even when I disagree with them (such as cutting out Grant Danasty entirely), because sometimes they bring good stuff to the table (such as this version of Hector), but you cannot possibly begin to tell me they are going to really, really miss the point of Alucard as a whole this hard. If they go down this route for real, yeah, I lose all respect. Alucard is not exactly a complicated character to understand, and again, creative liberties are good, but also, you do have a responsibility to properly understand what makes the character, the character.
And those would be my thoughts. Isaac arc good. TrevorSypha arc weird. Hector arc hopefully groundwork to something good. Alucard arc horrible. End Ted Talk.

Scenario: Lester trying to prepare for a perfect date. The guys have to help but fail miserably. Unexpected help comes in.
Additional notes: Gotta give Lester more love!

“I called you guys in for one reason and one reason only,” Lester said. He let the silence fall between him, Franklin, Trevor, and Michael. Lester spared them a quick glance but nothing beyond that. He could already feel his hands growing sweaty, which isn’t a good thing. He cleared his throat, looking anywhere but on them.  As much as those three were not the best choices when it comes to romance, Lester had no choice but to turn to them.  He couldn’t think of anyone else. He’ll be damned if he turned to any women. This situation he found himself to be in is meant for men and men only. Women wouldn’t understand what he’s going through. At least, that’s what he thought.  “I have a....date to attend to tonight,” Lester said, rushing it all out. He starts pacing back and forth, gripping his cane tightly. He could see his knuckles turning white because of his tight grip.  “A what now?” Michael asked in disbeliefed.  Lester stopped pacing and turned to his friends. He took several deep breaths before doing so. His gaze slidding to each and every one of their faces. Franklin could only stare at him. No emotions were written across his face. Michael and Trevor looked both shocked and disbelief.  “Lester has a date!?” Trevor asked. A bubble of laughter escaped his lips. He ignored the glares from Lester. “I can’t fucking believe it! I hope you don’t scare her off, Lester.” “Give him some credit, T,” Michael said. He also turned to glare at Trevor, who also ignored his glares. “He finally landed himself a girl. We might as well try to help him.”
“And maybe fucking fail at it, man.” Franklin could only shake his head. “Maybe not me. But y’all? Y’all may not help out too much.” “What the fuck does that mean, Frank!?” Trevor said, sharply.  “Hey, hey! This is no time to fucking argue who is better at preparing for dates or not. I asked for all three of you to be here. If you don’t want to leave, there’s the fucking door.” Lester’s voice cut through their voices. He could already feel himself getting frustrated. They haven’t even started and they were already arguing. Such children! “Are you going to help me or not!?”
Lester could already feel this day becoming hopeless. He might as well cancel the date. After all, he wanted this date to go smoothly. Hopefully, nothing bad happens. A woman he can finally love and who will love him back. She would love him for who he is, being disabled or not. She’ll love him regardless. His thoughts wander off to all sorts of scenarios. From what their marriage be like to their perfect little home.  “Lester? Lester!”  Lester got pulled back into reality. He blinked slightly. He switched his cane and adjusted his glasses.  “Oh, sorry about that,” Lester muttered, loudly.  “Did you wander to that kind of thought?” Trevor asked. He wiggled his eyebrows or attempted to do so.  “N-no. Enough, okay? We’re here to prepare me for my date,” Lester said. He turned his back on the three men. He faced the board. Lucky for Lester, he convinced Michael to use his house for planning and to get a board inside, which will be difficult to get back out. “You see, I planned to go to a fancy restuarant with this....woman-” A name he will not say out loud. Not yet. “So, I have to dress formally. This is what I have in mind. First, we-” “Hold up, dog,” Franklin cut Lester off. Lester held one hand up mid-way to touching the board. Lowering his hand, he turned to face his friends on the couch. “Are we planning a heist or a date? Cause those two are completely different things. A date doesn’t need to be planned outexactly. Just dress up, man. Smell nice.” “Bring her a gift or two,”  Michael said.  “Tell her that her-” Trevor was immediately cut off by Michael’s hand shooting out and covering his mouth.  “What he’s trying to say, compliment her. Not in that kind of way,” Michael hissed. He gave another glare to Trevor. Michael’s face changed from an annoyed look to a confused look to an angry look. His hand jerked away. “Why the fuck did you lick me, Trev!?” “Cause your fucking hand was over my mouth, sugartits,” Trevor said. 
Both Lester and Franklin groaned. There goes those two again.  ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ “Both looks so well on you,” Michael said. Hhe held up two suits. One in black and another in gray. He held the black suit up to Lester before holding up the gray.  “What about this one?” Trevor asked, popping up next to Michael. Trevor held up a brown checker suit. Lester didn’t like the look on Trevor’s face. It meant trouble.  “Hell no. It will show, you know,” Michael said. Using the hand with the gray suit, he gestures at Lester’s junk. “We don’t want to make the woman uncomfortable on the date. It’ll be embarassing.”  Franklin came up beside Trevor. He held up some boxes of shoes. Not a lot though. Lester could tell they were also having trouble finding outfits for him as much as he had troubled himself.  ‘This is getting more and more hopeless by the hour,’ Lester thought. He glanced at his watch. Time is ticking. He didn’t have a lot of time and he already didn’t have an outfit. He could just show up with whatever looks the nicest.  “Try these on,” Michael said. Both headed over to the fitting room, which he set the clothes down on the little chair. Franklin moved to place the shoes down. Both Franklin and Michael left, leaving Lester to try out the outfits.  An hour, several stores, and several outfits later, none of the guys found any outfits that would work. Either the size was too big or too small. Perhaps the suits didn’t look well on Lester, despite the colors working well. The shoes were okay, which is good. They got that down. “I give up,” Lester said. “I might as well cancel the date.” “We can’t fucking give up,” Trevor said.  “It’s hopeless,” Michael replied. He rolled his neck. A sigh left his lips.  “Oh, it’s not hopeless at all.”  All eyes turned to the speaker.

Resources
When I write a note to a parent or in response to some of the asks I’ve received, I will sometimes share a few links of resources or info. I’m sharing these for anyone to access or to share. These are not organized in any sort of order, but I’ll give a brief description of each one. 
1)  The Ten Tips for Parents on mormonandgay are good. And since it’s from a church-sponsored site, members will accept this without much criticism.
2)  Listen Learn & Love is a website by Richard Ostler. He's a former bishop who has made loving LGBT Mormons his ministry. The site has links to many useful resources. In his podcast, Richard speaks to many queer people (some who are still in the LDS church and some who have moved on) and lets them tell their story. I think the podcast is very useful for queer members to hear people who went through, or are currently going through, things that they do. And for non-queer people, I think they’ll be moved by hearing the experiences & thoughts of queer people in their own words.
3)  I think the Family Acceptance Project’s pamphlet for LDS families is excellent. Basically it says to accept & love your kid.
4)  PFLAG has resources for families of LGBT individuals. They focus on supporting those in need, education & advocating to create a better world for LGBTQ+ people, friends, family & neighbors (and I’ve been really impressed with their Provo, UT office). PFLAG has chapters in many nations. 
5)  This is a TedTalk that speaks to reasons why Nature creates homosexuals and includes some of the character traits of gay people compared to the general population.
6)  When I come across church members who think that homosexuality is a choice, I refer them to this document put together by Dr. Bill Bradshaw. He is a BYU researcher/professor and a former mission president. He summarizes the research showing the LGBTQ orientations are biologic, not a choice or caused by parenting or cultural influences.
7)  This is long, but is the best write up I’ve seen about the LDS church’s history on homosexuality while explaining what this is like for gay Mormons. Bryce Cook put this together and it was peer-reviewed and published. It does a good job in showing that change has happened, and we can expect more change to come.
8)    Taylor Petrey is a professor who in this presentation gives me many things to think about regarding gays & lesbians and Mormonism. He speaks about a post-heterosexual Mormon theology and points out how heterosexuality is not present in many LDS creation stories. He speaks like an academic, but is so thought provoking
9)  This is a simple to follow explanation of why temple sealings for gay couples makes sense. Useful for when members say that temple sealings for gay couples can NEVER be.
10)  Josh & Lolly Weed are the most famous example of a gay man & straight woman in a marriage. They have been very open about their experiences. This is the blog post where they announced their divorce. It is very illuminating and does a great job of explaining why this sort of marriage really doesn’t work for most gay people.
11)  This is dense, but it’s a listing of all sorts of queer people and relationships in Church history (we’ve been a part of the Church since the beginning). I think it’s fascinating to read about these people, the way they were treated and influence they had.
12)  This is a video about coming out, but from a very different point of view. It’s about coming out as straight, but I found it to be sweet and relatable.
13)  This is a humorous video about coming out as gay by Wanda Sykes
14)  Family Fellowship Support Group on Facebook is meant to help  Mormon moms & dads learn how to parent their gay child. It’s a closed group so only members of the group can see what’s posted.
15)  Transactive LDS is a private group for transgender individuals or family members.
16)  Carol Lynn Pearson is a Mormon who was married to a gay man. She’s the OG of LDS allies to the queer community. You may be familiar with some of their work like My Turn On Earth. She has written several books that are, in one way or another, about being gay in the church (Goodbye, I Love You; No More Goodbyes; and The Hero's Journey of Gay and Lesbian Mormons). Most famously she wrote the Primary song “I’ll Walk with You” and she was imagining singing this to gay children as she wrote it.
17)  Tom Christofferson, brother of the apostle D Todd Christofferson, is a gay man who came back to church and wrote a book titled That We May Be One: A Gay Mormon's Perspective on Faith and Family. He emphasizes the inclusion he received from his family, and from his ward when he wanted to come back. Here's an article summarizing parts of his story
18)  Affirmation is the oldest organization for LDS/post-LDS LGBTQ+ individuals, family and allies. They have multiple Facebook pages for people in different spots of their faith journey/in what way you’re queer/if you’re an ally or parent of a queer child. 
19)   Dragon Dads is a closed Facebook group for Dads to gain support, process & support their children who are LGBTQ+ in healthy ways
20)   Mama Dragons is for moms of LGBTQIA kids, the purpose is to support healthy lives
21)   The Human Rights Campaign has an online booklet for LGBT Mormons
22)   Gay Mormon History is a site that lets people explore the history of LGBT issues in the LDS Church
23)   Elder Ballard said “We need to listen to and understand what our LGBT brothers and sisters are feeling and experiencing. Certainly, we must do better than we have done in the past so that all members feel they have a spiritual home where their brothers and sisters love them and where they have a place to worship and serve the Lord.” (BYU Question and Answer devotional from November 2017)
24)   In the best BYU devotional ever given on the subject, BYU professor Eric Huntsmans “Hard Sayings and Safe Spaces”
25)  Many LGBT members find themselves at the church schools. USGA & USGA-Rexburg are organizations where they can meet other queer people. 
26)  Members of the LGBTQ community experience are at higher risk of committing suicide than the general public. The Trevor Project helps people ages 13-24. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available to anyone in the US. The Trans Lifeline is available in the US & Canada and it works to end transgender suicide and improve overall mental health of transgender people.
27)  Our Asexual & Aromantic church members have a closed Facebook group for them & their allies. 
28)  Many LGBT people step away from the LDS church. The Thoughtful Transitions Support Group on Facebook is meant to a safe space for people to heal and grow
29)  If you or a loved one needs therapy, there’s several options. If they are a university student in the US, they likely can access services free-of-charge at their school. Another option is to check your insurance and find the mental health professionals in your area that are covered. Try contacting the psychology dept at a local university for leads on a good therapist, or perhaps they offer some counseling services to non-students. Some members of the LDS church feel more comfortable going to see a therapist who is also LDS or who is familiar with the church. The Mormon Mental Health Association has a listing of such therapists arranged by US state & Calgary, Canada.

Barba was not happy.  In fact, he was angry, confused, and frustrated.  It hadn’t been a good couple of weeks, and there was no reason at all for that.  It should have been a great couple of weeks.  He’d gotten all the evidence in for the Fowler trial, even with Judge Paul “Evidence?  What Evidence?” Ivanovitch.  He’d practically made Trevor Langan cry when he got both Gonzalez brothers indicted. His Mami had finally given up the idea of a mother/son cruise without him having to actually admit he’d rather be eaten alive by a rabid wildebeest.  And he’d finally gotten somewhere with Adrien St. George.  Life was good.  So why was he so out of sorts?
Well, he knew one reason.  Something was off in the romance department.  He’d taken Janice Edwards to dinner a couple weeks before, thinking he’d just have a nice, relaxing night with a woman who didn’t require a lot of effort, followed by some uninspired but guaranteed sex.  She was certainly a lot less difficult than, for example, Francisca Rojas, with a much lower likelihood of fisticuffs breaking out between the appetizers and the entrée.  And Janice hadn’t done anything wrong or different, except that Barba had found himself bored out of his mind and couldn’t face the idea of spending the night with her. So he hadn’t.  Lunch with Bess Quinn had been just fine until he’d said something she didn’t like.  He’d tried to get her to talk about it – hell, no doubt Francisca would have been perfectly happy to blast him right there at the table – but Bess had simply frozen him out for the rest of the meal.  He tried to remember whether she’d always been like that, and had to admit that she had. He just hadn’t cared before.  And his date with Adrien, who was the worst but sexiest court administrator he’d ever seen, had been – OK.  She was interesting enough.  Maybe not “arrested for murdering her ex-boyfriend” interesting, but that was a good thing, right?  And speaking of Francisca, Adrien wasn’t nearly as difficult, and she actually seemed to like him.  Everything with Adrien was just fine.  She’d even invited herself back to his apartment after the opera.  He didn’t understand what had happened, but what had happened was… nothing.  They’d had a drink and he’d sent her home in a cab.  
At first, he’d thought maybe he needed a vacation or something.  But then he realized that what he needed was to stop comparing every woman to Francisca Rojas.  
The more he thought about it, the angrier at her he became.  She was just like the rest of her privileged ilk, swishing around in her Prada and pearls, positive that the moral high ground was her birthright and turning up her nose at the idea that sometimes life got messy.   And where the hell did she get off bludgeoning him for using a common phrase like “spin a story”?  People said that all the time, for fuck’s sake, it wasn’t intended as a moral indictment of her character.  I can’t date you if you think I did something bad?  What kind of bullshit was that?  Fuck, he hated rich, entitled people like her.

Her skirt was soft, brushed suede and fit her beautifully, modest and insanely sexy at the same time.  Rafael could only imagine the price tag.   Her silky fuchsia button-down blouse was a filmy, clingy cloud that exerted a draw on his eyes so powerful that he constantly had to refocus, tearing his gaze from the few buttons she’d casually left undone and the swell of her breasts.  It physically hurt him, somewhere in the center of his chest, to look at her and want her as much as he did, to remember what it was like to work and argue and laugh with her, sick with the knowledge that, in truth, she was not who he’d briefly allowed himself to imagine she was.  Instead, he had been right all along.  She was everything he hated.
“I needed to talk to you about something.  I’d really rather not discuss this here, and I’m sorry I had to ask Carmen to put me on your schedule, but I haven’t been able to connect with you.”
“What is it you need, Doctor?”  Was Barba’s voice cold?  Was he purposely continuing to focus on his computer screen rather than look at her?  That was not what she’d come to expect from him.  She had never seen him intentionally impolite, but he was now.
“May I close your door?”
He waved nonchalantly, still not looking at her.
“May I sit?”  The edge that now crept into in her voice finally made him look up.  
“Go ahead,” he said without inflection, flicking a hand in the direction of the chairs before his desk.
Maybe he thought she was still upset with him.  Of course, she thought, that had to be it.  He didn’t know why she was here.  “I’ve learned some things that you deserve to know.  And I owe you an apology.”
He didn’t respond.  He stayed still, not a flicker of emotion crossing his closed features, and he said nothing.  What the hell?
“I know why Juwon Jefferson came forward with his information about Alan Canady.  I swear on my mother’s grave that I didn’t kill Alan, and I believe that every word Jefferson said was true.  But you were right.  He was… coerced.”
Still Barba said nothing.  He kept his face completely neutral, but his breathing had become just a bit deeper and, consciously or not, he was clenching his jaw.  Which didn’t look to Frankie like surprise.  Well, she’d expected him to be mad.  He was entitled to some righteous anger at her for taking such a holier-than-thou attitude with him when she left his apartment. She’d certainly expected a hefty ration of mocking for being so wrong.  Except this looked like… disgust.  Hate, almost.
“I needed to tell you that you were right, and I was wrong.  And I apologize to you for the way I reacted.”
Frankie had said what she had to say, so she waited for him to respond.  Maybe he was thinking about what he wanted to say?  She tried to be patient and give him time to do that.  It ended up taking a full minute.
“And what is it you want from me in return for this blinding revelation that I can, in fact, see what’s right in front of my nose and may perhaps not be an entirely soulless bottom-dweller after all?  Or am I giving myself too much credit?”
Frankie recoiled as though he had struck her.  She felt like he had. 
“I think you once told me you like being on the receiving end of an apology.”  She tried a small smile, which died as she looked into his eyes.
“I don’t particularly like anything about this conversation, Doctor.  What is it you want?”
“Barba, I…  I don’t want anything from you.”
“Then why are you here?”
“I don’t understand.  What…  We were starting to be friends before Jefferson, weren’t we?  And I messed that up.  I’m trying to fix that.  I need you to know that I know you were right, but I’m having a hard time dealing with that, and I…  just…”
“Ah.  So that’s it.  You want absolution.  You want me to tell you that you’re still pure as the driven snow, even though somebody else had to get dirty to keep you that way, and I had the regrettably poor breeding to mention it.” 
“What?  No, I…” 
“Apology accepted.  Now, did you need anything else?  Anything work-related?” 
“What’s this about?  Why are you talking to me like this?  I said I was wrong, and I’m sorry…”
“I heard you.  And I’ve accepted your apology.  You’ll forgive me if I don’t give you a damn parade for it.”
“I don’t want-“
“What do you want?  I’ve asked you that several times since you waltzed in here and I have yet to get an answer.  I have things to do, even if you don’t.” 
Frankie was blindsided and too wounded even to feel anger at this point.  She was too appalled even to cry.  This was far worse than when Alan had turned on her.  With Alan, there had been some warning.  It had come on gradually.  Besides which, she had never had deep feelings for Alan.  But this, with Barba…  she had fallen in love with him, never having the first inkling this side of him existed.  So he had been able to get right next to her heart before he struck. 
She stumbled out of his office, her only instinct being to run.  Just as it had been with Alan.
Unbelievable.  It was exactly as he’d thought.  Expressing all sorts of wonderment at having discovered – apparently all by herself, as though Barba hadn’t said it to her five minutes after it happened - that someone beat the tar out of Juwon Jefferson to make him come forward.  And then she just sat there, all big eyes and expectation, as though he was going to – what?  Thank her for sharing?  Congratulate her on her wisdom and foresight in having friends who would put themselves in that kind of jeopardy for her?  It had been all he could do not to throw her out of his office.

The suspect was a notorious South American playboy, son of a diplomat, who appeared entirely uninterested in the severity of the aggravated rape charges pending against him.  The entire Western Hemisphere knew that Guillermo Maduro could speak English if he chose, but he insisted on being interrogated in Spanish, which meant that Barba and Rojas were doing the questioning.  They both hated Maduro on sight, as did everyone who had been involved in his arrest.  That wasn’t going to get them any evidence they could use, however, which was why, at that moment, Frankie was laughing softly at his inappropriate joke and touching her hair. 
Maduro was a pig.  He kept aiming his hooded gaze at her breasts, then raising his eyebrows.  She wanted to pull a garbage bag over herself to protect her body from his leer, but she swallowed her disgust and preened instead.  Barba wanted to kill him.  As he watched Maduro basically lick Francisca with his eyes, Barba had recurring fantasies of taking him out with a hatchet.  
“Come on, Doctor, it’s different for people like us, yes?” Maduro’s voice, as he apparently tried to sound smooth, sounded instead like a cold lump of Vaseline.
Barba could feel his pulse throbbing in his temples.  He remembered hearing someone say something like that, a long time ago, to differentiate themselves from him.    
“Tell me,” Frankie said.  Every instinct she had told her to punch Maduro in his drooling mug.   Instead, she tried to look demure and interested instead.  “What does that mean?”
“Those people, they have all these tired rules.”  
“Such as?”
“Oh, come now, Doctor.  This woman, she says I attacked her.  I did not attack.  A man like me, I do not need to attack.  But your police pretend to believe her because of the news.  They must look as though they believe that woman over me.”
“But they should believe you over her,” Frankie said.
“Well,” Maduro bestowed his wide, white, greasy smile on her.  “Of course, we cannot say these things too loudly. You know how those kind of people are.  People who do not understand, they will misinterpret.”
It came to Barba in that moment where he had last heard someone so shamelessly asserting that money and social standing came with different rules. It had been at Harvard, during a cocktail party that Rafael had attended as an officer of La Alianza, the Latino student association at the law school.  He was standing close together with two other officers of the group, feeling small and wildly out of place.  His little knot of overwhelmed students were standing just to the side of a large, well-lubricated group in which a tall, red-faced white man was holding forth about how admirable it was that Harvard allowed “those kinds of people” to attend so that they could return home and “fix their neighborhoods.”  The talk went on to a discussion of how “people like that” simply had “different values,” “didn’t understand how we do things” and, after graduation would be happiest if they returned to where they were “comfortable.”  From there, it had only gotten worse.  By the time Rafael finally signaled that they should simply leave, the President of La Alianza, a young woman of Venezuelan descent who seemed mousy until she opened her mouth and blew you away with her rhetorical skills, actually had tears in her eyes.  Maduro would have fit right in with that Harvard crowd except, of course, that he would not have been welcome.
“You can tell us,” Frankie purred.  “We’ll understand.”
“Yes, I can see by your clothes, both of you, that you are not like the police.  We are a different sort, aren’t we?  We understand each other.”
For a moment, Frankie thought that Barba had exploded out of his chair in order to attack Maduro.  She wouldn’t have blamed him, but she prepared to try to intervene.
“Dr. Rojas, a word, please.”  His voice was low and tight.
In the squad room, Rafael poured himself a cup of coffee and drank half of it before he spoke.
¿Estas bien?  ¿Cuál es el problema?[1]  Frankie asked, concern evident on her face and in her posture as she stood and touched his arm.  He roughly threw her hand from him.  That stung, but she chose to ignore it.
“That man is…  I can’t even think of words vile enough.”
“And you know all the good ones, too,” she said, trying to lighten the mood.  “Good idea to take a break for a while.”
They walked slowly back toward the hallway where Benson, Dodds, and Carisi stood in front of the one-way window into the interrogation room, chatting together.  Still speaking Spanish, Frankie and Rafael stayed to the side of that group as Frankie tried to understand what was happening with Barba.  Of course, she had been trying to figure that out since he’d basically tossed her out of his office the other day, but that was a different matter.
“I find it incomprehensible that you can be so obsequious to him.”
“I’m not being obsequious.  Maybe a lot more sympathetic than I really feel…”
“He doesn’t seem to bother you.”  
That got under Frankie’s skin.  “Well, I’m going to take that as a compliment to my rapport-building skills, because I detest that prick.  When he’s gone, I’m gonna bleach my brain to get him out.  This whole precinct.  Maybe the entire city.”
“Really.”  Rafael’s voice had a nasty edge.
Frankie was stunned.  He could not be serious.  He could not be saying that he thought she had any sympathy for that cretin.  “Of course, really.  I fucking hate that asshole.”
“Are you sure?  Because that’s not what it looks like from here.”
“That’s not what it’s supposed to look like from here.  You do understand what I’m trying to do here, right?”
“Yeah, I’m familiar with the basic concept of flirtation, Doctor.”
The hurt in her eyes was unmistakable, as was the shock at this fresh assault.  She physically flinched.  When she responded, there was no trace of challenge, vanity, or anything resembling humor in her voice.  There was only a raw plea.
“Barba, can we be real for just a second?  Please?  This man is filth.  I want to just brick in the windows and doors and leave him in there to rot.  Yeah, I’m trying to build rapport with him by putting my gag reflex on hold and pretending to be sympathetic.  Because that’s my job.   I’m doing it to get him.  Is that not clear to you?  You and I are on the same side.”
“People like you and Maduro, are you ever really on any side, other than your own?”
She didn’t intend to do it.  She didn’t even see it coming.  If she had, she certainly would have stopped herself.  But when she heard Barba, the man she loved, lump her together with the smarmy, hateful rapist in the box, Frankie emitted a loud, wordless yell as the last of her patience frayed and snapped.  She reached back and slapped him across the face as hard as she possibly could.  Which was pretty hard. 
“You prejudiced snob asshole!  I am nothing like him!  And I will finish this interrogation on my own because I really, really need you to get the fuck out of my sight.”
There was no sound but the soft clunk of Rafael’s shoes as he walked out of the squad room.
Frankie turned a deep shade of red and stormed back into the interrogation room.
Standing next to the one-way glass, Dodds leaned in to Carisi, asking softly, “What do you suppose he said?”
“With Barba?  It’s anyone’s guess.  I’m just glad I got to be here to see that!”
“Neither of you saw that,” Olivia said severely.
Carisi blinked, innocence flowing down to cover his expression like a mask.  “Saw what, Lieu?” 
Olivia went into the box.  She wasn’t exactly bilingual, but her Spanish would have to do.  It was enough.  By the time she and Rojas emerged again, Frankie had flirted Guillermo Maduro into a noose he was not going to escape.   Olivia didn’t think some of the names she’d called him after his confession were particularly necessary, but then she didn’t think they were all really aimed at Maduro, either.
 Rafael walked down the hall to the elevators, holding his cheek and smiling like an absolute lunatic.  In one second, the bottom had dropped out of his carefully-constructed self-delusion at the same time a blinding ray of hope pierced the sky.  That slap had hurt for sure.  But now he understood, and he knew that he deserved it.
Francisca Rojas was nothing like the caricature he’d painted of her in his mind, and she’d done absolutely nothing to deserve the way he’d treated her. She had been nothing but her genuine self every moment he’d known her.  It was all him.  He was the asshole.  
He had treated her like absolute garbage when they’d met, for no reason other than his own – well, she’d said it - snobbery and prejudice.  But then, as soon as he could swoop in and protect her from Alan Canady, and be her stability when she’d been rocked to her core by her arrest, he had been perfectly happy to fall in love with her.  Yes, Barba, admit it, you fell in love even before she did. Because when she was in need, he could feel superior to her.  But the moment she’d begun to recover, to show signs of strength and self-sufficiency, he’d reverted to the scholarship kid from Harvard and rejected her before she could reject him.  Or something like that.  It didn’t matter.  What mattered was that he had finally seen the truth of who she’d been all along, and it was so clear and obvious he marveled at his own disastrous ability to pretend otherwise for as long as he had. 
Oh, he was a complete and utter dick; he had no illusions about that anymore.  But he would make that up to her if it took him the rest of his life, and he would love every second of it.  And she’d let him.  No matter what he had to do, he would get her back, and he would make her let him apologize to her until she could no longer even remember what he was apologizing for.  Rafael would never have imagined he could be so deliriously happy about getting smacked around by the woman he loved in front of a room full of cops.  
What to do?  Fill her apartment with roses.  No, she was a little too pissed for that right now; she was likely to stuff them all in his apartment and take a flamethrower to them.  Go to her on his knees with the biggest diamond ring he could find.  No again, and for the same reason.  If he put his chin in the neighborhood of her legs right now, she would boot him into New Jersey.  Hold a boom box over his head outside her apartment window?  Still no.  She said she could shoot the eye out of… something small.  The point was, that wasn’t going to work. 
 OK, he was going to have to find a way to get her to at least hear what he had to say.  He smiled evilly.  There was one sure-fire way to do that.  And he knew some very clever people who would help him make it happen.  By the time she figured out she’d been had, hopefully he would have at least talked her into not killing him.  What was a little unlawful imprisonment after everything else he’d done to her?
 For the rest of the day, Rafael felt really stupid wearing a dopey grin around all the time.  But he couldn’t seem to get rid of it.

“Carisi, I got an assignment for you.”
“Yeah, Sarge.  What is it?”
“Well, it’s a little bit off the books.  So feel free to say no.  It’s kind of a personal favor for Barba.”

Sitting in the back seat of the squad car, Frankie thought this might be what an out-of-body experience felt like.  She had been upset for days after Barba had basically thrown her out of his office, and she still had no idea what she’d done to deserve it.  Then, today, the things he’d said…  The things he’d accused her of…  And then, as though she had never done the slightest bit of work on controlling her temper, as though she was a teenage drama queen or a big-haired siren on a telenovela, she’d slapped Barba across the face in front of the entire NYPD.  Or at least, that’s how it had felt.  
Now, as though she wasn’t unhinged enough, Dodds and Carisi were hustling her to some building somewhere, where there was a man who needed… something. It was all still confusing to her, but Dodds kept reassuring her that they just needed her psychiatric expertise to talk to this guy.  He didn’t have a hostage.  He didn’t have any weapons, there was no danger, he was just a guy who, for some reason unfathomable to Frankie, they needed her to talk to.  It was ridiculous and doomed to failure, because she knew absolutely nothing about this man or what his issues were, but Frankie had worked for a federal bureaucracy for a long time.  Sometimes the brass made decisions for reasons known only to them and God.  And sometimes even God was a little iffy on the logic.  
The car pulled up to a small, empty-looking unit in an industrial park.  In the fading light of late afternoon, the unit appeared to be a few offices attached to a larger space that could be used for a small manufacturing or warehousing business. It was sort of a lonely-looking area since it was after business hours and at least half the units appeared to be untenanted.   
“OK, so, Doc, you stay here.  We’re gonna go in, do a little recon, talk to the guy and see if everything’s secure.  Won’t take more than a minute or two.  As long as everything’s kosher, we’ll come out and get you.”
“OK, whatever.  I still say this is a jacked up way to be doing things.”
“Welcome to the NYPD,” Carisi grinned, unfolding his long legs from the vehicle.
The two walked toward the door of the unit, tried it and found it unlocked, then went in.  In her tired irritation, Frankie nonetheless had a second to notice how good Dodds and Carisi looked together.  She really hoped something nice would happen for them.  Which kicked her mind back over into the track it had been stuck in. What the hell was the matter with Rafael Barba?  And what was she going to do about it?
Only a few minutes later, Dodds and Carisi stepped out the front door of the office section of the unit, signaling her.  Frankie sighed, looped her carryall over her shoulder, and got out of the car.  She went to them.
“So?  What’s the situation?”
“It’s all good.  Come on in,” Dodds said.  “Everything’s copacetic, we just need you to talk to this guy.”
Shaking her head slightly, Frankie walked through the door Carisi held open for her.  She didn’t see the look that passed between him and Dodds behind her.  She found herself in a small reception area empty of furniture, with a short hallway running toward a door that appeared to connect to the larger workroom/warehouse section of the unit.  Two doors opened on each side of the hallway.
“He’s in the last office on the left,” Dodds said.  “We’ll wait here in the lobby.”
Frankie walked uncertainly down the hallway to the door Dodds had indicated, then knocked.
“Come in,” a male voice said.  
She opened the door and was stunned to see Barba sitting on the edge of a bare metal desk.  
“What the hell…?”  She said.
“Come on in.  Have a seat,” he said, indicating two cheap stacking chairs with metal frames and torn fabric seats.  
“What’s going on?” Frankie asked, scowling at Barba and considering backing up out of the room.
“I need to talk to you,” he answered, his voice softer and kinder than she’d heard it for months.
At that moment, she heard the front door of the unit close, and the sound of something metal.  
“What...”  She turned and rushed down the hall to see Dodds and Carisi just finishing padlocking the door on the outside.  She yelled at them and pounded on the door, but they simply waved at her, smiling, and went to sit in their squad car.
She pulled her phone from her carryall and texted Dodds.
Frankie Rojas:
WTF
Mike Dodds:
Listen to him.
Frankie Rojas:
I will break the glass out of this door.
Mike Dodds:
Good luck with that.  It’s unbreakable Hammerglass.  Let him say what he has to say.
 She tried Carisi.
 Frankie Rojas:
Don’t be a party to this BS – you’re nicer than them.
Sonny Carisi:
Dodds is my boss, Barba’s helping me get hooked up with the D.A.’s office.
Frankie Rojas:
I am vengeful and creative and have a long memory.
Sonny Carisi:
He needs to talk to you. Let him.
 Frankie blew out her breath in annoyance as she leaned her back against the wall of the lobby.  From down the hall she heard Barba call, “I could have told you they’re on my side, but you would have tried anyway.”
“I could call other cops.  Cops who don’t owe you favors,” she shouted to him.
“That’s why Dodds and Carisi are staying.  Just in case they need to intervene.”
“I really hate you right now.”
“I know.  But you’ll get over it.”

EVERY FOUNDER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PROBLEMS
My test was to think of intelligence as inborn is that people trying to measure it have concentrated on the aspects of economic inequality where the cause of poverty is the same as the root cause of variation in income is a sign that something is broken? At Yahoo, user-facing software was controlled by product managers and designers the final step, by translating it into code. I'm not saying that if you let Henry Ford get rich, he'll hire you as a waiter at his next party. Somehow the idea of making really large amounts of money. When people come to you with a problem and you have to sound intellectual. All the hackers I know, managed to be mistaken. An organization that wins by exercising power starts to lose deals. That was not, probably, how McCarthy thought of it as a personal insult when someone from the other team from scoring is considered to have played a perfect game.1 Right now, VCs often knowingly invest too much money at the series A stage. And if you weren't rich, you took the omnibus or walked.
Microsoft.2 Great hackers also generally insist on using open source software. In that case, stay on a main branch becomes more than a way to please other people. It's so cheap to start, this conflict goes away, because founders can start them younger, when it's rational to take more risk, and can start more startups total in their careers. When you reach the point where 90% of a group's output is created by 1% of its members, you lose big if something whether Viking raids, or central planning drags their productivity down to the average Frankish nobleman in 800, and report back to us. Art History 101.3 Hacker News and our application system.4 That way we can avoid applying rules and standards to intelligence that are really meant for wisdom. Whereas the independence of the townsmen allowed them to keep whatever wealth they created.5 These initial versions can be so pervasive that it takes a great effort to overcome it. Then you could see in the house, the herds, and the number one thing they have in common. The difference is that wise means one has a high average outcome.
Editorialists ask. Bottom-up programming suggests another way to convince investors to let you do it? If circumstances had been different, the people running Yahoo might have realized sooner how important search was.6 But that won't eliminate great variations in wealth would mean eliminating startups.7 When I heard this, I thought he was a complete idiot.8 You can see wealth—in buildings and streets, in the original sense, is something you write to try to figure something out. The more of your application you can push down into a language for writing that type of application, the more we'll see multiple companies doing the same thing ourselves.9 Which is precisely why we hear ever more about it.10 Society as a whole ends up poorer. But startups aren't like that. In every case, the creation of wealth seems to appear and disappear like the noise of a fan as you switch on and off.11
Central France in 1100, off still feudal. Or consider watches. You have to be nice to, you have two options: work at home, hackers can arrange things themselves so they can get the most done. And they think of it as normal to have a remedial character. The idea is basically that you sort search results not in order of how much money Yahoo would make from each link. It consists of some things that are good and some that are historical trends with immense momentum and others that are random accidents.12 The place to look for what I learned from Paul Buchheit: it's better to make a deep point here about the true nature of wisdom, just to make sure they're ok guys. One of the things pinned up on our bulletin board was an ad from IBM.14 Brandeis was a product of this period. But Apple created wealth, in the sense that the authors didn't know when they started exactly what they were trying to get people to start calling them portals instead of search engines. This isn't true in all fields. And this is the route to well-deserved obscurity. So it's not just fastidiousness that makes good hackers avoid nasty little problems is that you make what you measure.15 That's why Yahoo as a company has sunk into technical mediocrity and recovered.
And of course if Microsoft is your model, you shouldn't be looking for, most of the time, perhaps most of the time, and runtime. You'd seem a barbarian if you behaved that way today. Starting in the tenth and eleventh centuries, petty nobles and former serfs banded together in towns that gradually became powerful enough to appropriate it.16 If Lenin walked around the offices of a company like Yahoo or Intel or Cisco, he'd think communism had won.17 Why?18 It's hard to predict what will; often something that seems interesting at first will bore you after a month. Understanding your users is part of what makes them good hackers: when something's broken, they need to get a work visa in the US, without an undergraduate degree—but tests like this will matter less and less.19
Though useful to present-day languages, if they'd had them. When you look at the history of stone tools, technology was already accelerating in the Mesolithic.
