Yesterday we had a friend of my parent's over, and she asked a lot of completely fair questions about the church- about women, their roles, the misogyny in the church, so on. She was being very fair and respectful, genuinely looking for explanations. Something my dad said really stuck with me. "Jesus doesn't just swoop in every time we mess up. A lot of the time, He lets us figure it out and work it out for ourselves." We also talked quite a bit about the Children of Israel- after they left Egypt, the older generation had to die for them to be able to enter the promised land.Change happens in the church, albeit slowly. I've seen the progress, though. And as more of the members and leaders catch on to the central principles, i think it will continue to march forward. It's hard now. It's not going to stop being hard. But slowly, slowly. It will get better.

God loves your body. Your intersex body, your transsexual body, your nonbinary body, your transgender body, your genderqueer body, your androgynous body. Whatever body you have, God loves it dearly.

Are you willing to condemn the racism the Mormon church has taught you?
The church has been wrong on Racism, Patriarchy, Misogyny and Anti-queerness.
One message that is given in scriptures in different ways is that God loves us all and treats us the same, and we should do likewise.
Deuteronomy 10:17 - For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.
Mark 12:31 - The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
John 13:34 - “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
Acts 10:34 - Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism
Romans 2:11 - For God does not show favoritism.
Romans 10:12 - For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,
Galatians 3:28 - There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 3:11 - Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
2 Nephi 26:33 - ...black and white, bond and free, male and female; … all are alike unto God
Furthermore, the Book of Mormon can be seen as a cautionary tale about a group of violently racist misogynists who wound up getting annihilated explicitly because they would not stop being violently racist misogynists. It also teaches that pride and wealth inequality doom civilizations. Too many Mormons view the Nephites as the heroes of the Book of Mormon and want to be like them, but D&C 38:39 warns us, "lest ye become as the Nephites of old."

2 Nephi 31:20 - Love of all men
Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men.
As a gay man, I think I'm acing this love of all men! lol
But seriously, here we see yet again, we are to love God and to love people. That is the key to our religion. Yet we create many obstacles to exclude certain groups of people, like those who are LGBTQ+, from being embraced in our love. Too many Latter-day Saints like to keep queer people at arms length because we don't fit in the theology.
When the theology is simplified down to its core to love God and to love people, those who try to make sure they don't love us too much so that it's clear they don't condone all our choices, they are the ones breaking the fundamental commandments.

You post a lot about trans things, how can you be so sure? What if you're wrong?
Trans, enby, genderqueer, and intersex individuals are part of humanity. I don't understand why recognizing the full spectrum of humanity is considered dangerous. Everyone deserves respect.
Unfortunately, because this seems new and foreign to people, many are uncomfortable and refuse to acknowledge pronouns and they vote for restrictive laws such as limiting health care or making special laws about bathroom usage. This serves to further marginalize these queer individuals and greatly diminishes their health and well-being.
This is not new or unique. Many indigenous cultures around the world recognize more than 2 genders.
Gender is about identity, roles, and societal expectations. For most people, it aligns with their biological sex which is about anatomy and chromosomes and so on, but gender and sex don't always align. Even biological sex isn't strictly a binary as evidenced by intersex individuals. There are variations in chromosomes, genitals, hormone levels, and secondary sex characteristics.
We have genderqueer, trans, and nonbinary people who share with us their reality of not fitting in the gender binary. There's also gender fluidity, where someone's gender identity and expression shifts over time. Learning from them about the reality of their lives is important and teaches us a lot about gender. Acknowledging their experiences and that a spectrum exists can significantly improve their mental health and well-being. Why would I not want that for a group of people?
Science is increasingly producing studies which support that gender is not binary. A modern biology textbook, or even listening to a science-based podcast episode about gender will make this point.
We already have seen such damage from trying to force queer people to fit into heteronormative cisgender lives. That is something our church and our society was wrong about because they refused to listen to queer people and their experiences. And the harm wasn't restricted to queer people but also affects others, like the spouses of all those gay people who were told to get married and it would make their gayness go away. You're asking me what if I'm wrong, what if YOU are wrong and trans people actually are speaking the truth about their lives and experiences?
For trans people, studies show the best outcomes for their mental health includes some form of transitioning. Letting people have the autonomy and agency to make the best choices for themselves is important.

do you have any book recommendations for learning about queer history? especially post-WW2?
Tumblr media
The LGBTQ+ History Book. About 1/2 of the book covers from 1950 to the present. It is easy to read and covers many important topics and milestones and even includes the Pulse Nightclub and the lifting on bans of gay men from donating blood, which means it covers some recent events. It's a good introduction.
To give you a flavor of the book, here's a few of the pages.

I just found this blog and it's interesting. I can't help but point out that you are so much more than just who you are attracted to. Why do you focus on this? Your identity is as a child of God, a child of the covenant, and as a disciple of Christ. Don't let your sexual thoughts and feelings limit you.
On this blog I am sharing about my thoughts and experiences as a queer Latter-day Saint. In other words, this blog is focused on that particular intersection, it's not reflective of my entire life.
I am frequently on the receiving end of comments like this, they'd rather me not talk about these things because it makes them uncomfortable as it doesn't fit their beliefs.
I understand this behavior is what you've been trained to do. Let me point out that messages like this are supremacist and can come across as bullying. Feel free to start a blog that looks like how you think someone should post only about those 3 identities and don't try to impose on me how think my blog should be. This blog isn't about you so maybe try learning from it as it's by someone who is different from you.
If you choose to write again, please don't portray yourself as the victim in this interaction. I'm holding you accountable for what is implied in the message you sent me.
One more thing, don't cast stones at marginalized people. Jesus only took shots at those who had privilege and power in that society...except for one time when he told a lady He wasn't there to bless people like her. She turned it around on Christ and He ended up doing what she requested.
