Alright, friends, you know the drill by now. Here’s Part III of Sarcasticles’ overblown thoughts on sexism in One Piece. If you haven’t already, go read Part I and Part II before proceeding.

I promise after this I’ll be done. By hook or by crook, we’re getting through the point of the original question. To the Anon who originally sent the ask, sorry it took this long to get here, I hope it’s helpful.

Also, I allude to some very, very minor Wano spoilers, so if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing here’s your warning.

Characterization? I Don’t Know Her

What makes a good character?

I’ve spent an awful lot of time talking about character designs, when, funnily enough, it’s one of the aspects I pay the least attention to when it comes to deciding if I like how an author portrays their characters. I personally don’t care for fanservice, never have and never will. But unless it’s particularly egregious, I tend to ignore it because there are other factors I think are more important.

The secret sauce for building characters is hard to define, because a good writer can take a concept that has no right being any good and turn it into something incredible (Oda does this all the time) where bad writers will seemingly slot all the right information in the right holes and still have their characters come out of the developmental oven flat and under cooked.

One of the biggest buzzwords floating around these days is agency. Is a character active in their own story, or are they jerked around by the needs of the plot? Is their voice heard? Is their voice unique, or do they blend in with the background?

This is particularly important, because the term Strong Female Protagonist has been warped into shorthand for “girl who fights a lot and looks pretty doing it”. You can have a girl strong enough to lift mountains and still have her be a shit character. You can write a girl who’s main motivation is to get married and have babies with phenomenal depth. What matters is execution.

The Petition to Call A Group of Rescue Arcs a ‘Damsel’

Both Nami and Robin had to be rescued, their main arcs bearing similarities that are impossible to ignore. But these aren’t copies of one another as much as variations on a theme, and with the existence of Marineford and Whole Cake Island I think anyone would be hard-pressed to say that One Piece’s rescue arcs are a girl’s thing. At this point it’s a feature, not a bug.

Which makes sense given how fundamental the idea freedom is to the series. Hell, the first thing Luffy does after becoming a pirate is free Coby from Alvida’s tyrannical reign. Then he frees Zoro from an unjust authority that would have killed him had Luffy not intervened.

Notice a pattern here?

One Piece is written like Pachelbel Canon, in that a very simple core of ideas are repeated over and over with layers of complexity and nuance added over time, examining the same themes from every possible angle.

And when you look at the Four Big Rescue Arcs -- Nami, Robin, Ace, Sanji -- you’ll see that it’s Ace who’s given the least agency throughout his arc. Nami chose to hijack the Going Merry, repeatedly chose to push away the Straw Hats until she reached her breaking point, at which she chose to ask for help, with Luffy only intervening once she does.

Robin is a little less obvious, but during the post-Water 7 party chapters, Aokiji makes the interesting observation that Robin could have escaped CP9, but chose not to

Remember that before Robin’s backstory was shown, Luffy specifically said he didn’t care if she wanted to die or not, so long as she was with the Straw Hats when she made her decision. No one bullied her into “I wanna live”. It was a choice she made of her own volition after realizing the depths the Straw Hats would go on her behalf.

I know there are people who disagree with me, but Nami and Robin are well-written characters. I’ve expounded enough on my reasoning both here and on my main that I don’t want to spend the time belaboring the point. What I do want is to note that Luffy wouldn’t be able to attain his dreams without them. Nami keeps them on course while also severing as a sort of moral compass for the crew -- remember she was the one who insisted on saving the giant kids at Punk Hazard -- while Robin’s ability to read the poneglyphs is what’s going to get the crew to Raftel.

Robin admittedly doesn’t have the same presence within the Straw Hat Pirates as Nami, but I would hardly call that sexism. Since Water 7/Enies Lobby she’s been pretty content to go with whatever Luffy says, and the fact that she’s literally quieter than anyone else in the crew means she doesn’t get as much focus. I think there could be more scenes with her using her specific skill set, like her investigations in Wano and the forensic anthropology scene in the pre-Jaya chapters, but I’m okay with her being a supporting character.

The East Blue Crew have consistently gotten the most focus of any of the Straw Hats. They are the core of the crew, something Oda admits in a roundabout way in the Color Walk where they all appear together for the first time in a color spread

With the main cast as large as it is, not everyone is going to have the same amount of focus or development. Robin is given a unique voice within the story because she doesn’t overreact the way literally everyone else does. Through her silence, she stands out. I find there to be very meaningful character development when she feels comfortable enough with the Straw Hats to start calling them by name in Thriller Bark, relaxed enough with her friends to comitt her first facefaults in a series lousy with them in both Dressrosa and Wano.

In an ideal world, Oda would better rotate through his cast, much like how Brook was the unsung MVP on Whole Cake Island (where Nami was also excellent in a supporting role) but I don’t think people realize how hard it is to juggle almost a dozen different people in a story that’s bloated exponentially over time. To his credit, Oda has handled his expanding crew better than most writers.

I also find it hard to judge this aspect of the series because the manga’s not done yet. I don’t know how Robin and Nami will be used in the future. I mean, Robin never got a chapter title declaring her “The Seventh” which I find suspicious, so Oda could very well have events in store that completely turn our perceptions upside down. It’s impossible to say.

I will acknowledge that the lack of big fights is somewhat disappointing, but neither Robin nor Nami’s dreams revolve around them getting stronger. Robin doesn’t need to use her power to make people explode from the inside out, Nami doesn’t need to fry end-game bosses with her lightning stick. That’s simply not their narrative purpose. With the exception of Tashigi, I’ve found that the female characters advertised as fighters have lived up to their billing. Hancock came out of Marineford unscathed. Carrot’s sulong form was awesome, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. The whole climax of Whole Cake Island revolved around surviving Big Mom’s wrath. Not beating her, not fighting her, it took all the Straw Hats had to just survive. Once again you’re left with a number’s game where where there just aren’t enough female characters to even pretend things are balanced.

All said, I think if you’re going to complain about the lack of Robin fights then I think you also have to complain about the lack of Brook fights, and that’s just not something you hear about, especially after Whole Cake Island. You can’t have it both ways. Either there needs to be more even distribution of major fights throughout the entire crew, or you have to acknowledge that a character’s worth isn’t dependent on their fighting prowess.

One Piece is a battle manga, and I do think that it’s fair to criticize when a character isn’t allowed to fight when they’re perfectly capable of kicking ass. But it’s also an adventure story, and that opens up entirely new space for a character to occupy, and that’s where I think Nami and Robin (but especially Nami) really shine

That Moment You Realize Humor Isn’t A Universal Language

I’ve spent so much time defending Oda’s designs and characters that it might seem like I’m perfectly okay with everything that’s portrayed in the manga. To be clear, I’m not. If the messages and comments I’ve gotten over the past several days have taught me anything, it’s that many fans share the same sticking points I do, namely in regards to some of the gags.

I again want to be careful here, because I’m hardly an expert on Japanese culture and it’s really hard to tell if Oda writes his jokes because he thinks they’re funny, or if he thinks his audience will find them funny. I’m again going to default to somewhere in the middle, because if Oda truly found the perviness distasteful he probably wouldn’t have included it, and I’ve read enough SBS to know the guy likes his dick jokes.

First and foremost, one must address the culture gap. Japan ranks last among G7 nations on gender equality, In 2004 two-thirds of Tokyo women in their 20-30s reported to being groped while on public transport. There are numerous barriers that make it difficult for a woman to succeed either in the workplace or politics.

From what I can gather, some of these trends are reversing, albeit slowly and with great resistance. Contrary to what many people seem to believe culture is not always value neutral. And I say that as an American, recognizing there are plenty of things about my culture and country that are really fucked up.

But who gets to decide who’s right and who’s wrong?

When inside that kind of environment, that kind of culture, it’s a lot easier to understand how a character like Sanji can exist. It’s easy to understand why Momo shoving his face into Nami and Robin’s boobs might be played for laughs. It’s not an excuse, but an explanation. And with Sanji failing more often than not, being the butt of his own joke as he slowly turns into a parody of what he once was, one could almost say Oda is pointing those types of people and saying, “Look how pathetic this guy is. Now go laugh as he gets a nosebleed so bad he needs multiple blood transfusions in order to not die.”

I say almost, because Sanji is never condemned for his actions, nor does he learn from them. Instead you have this character who’s supposed to be one of the kindest characters in the series decide to immediately go peep on a woman’s bath house after gaining the power of invisibility.

Stay classy, Oda.

As distasteful as I find it, I don’t find fanservice to be an inherently evil thing that must be eradicated at all costs, and with Oda doing things like putting his entire cast, male and female, into skintight leathers you can hardly say that he’s excluding the men.

Everyone will have their line in the sand, and mine goes back to agency. When Nami did her Happiness Punch way back in Alabasta, that was of her own volition. When Nami and Robin dress in clothes that show everything but the nipple, that’s something they chose and feel comfortable in.

But when Smoker and Tashigi swapped bodies at Punk Hazard, Tashigi specifically asked Smoker not to strip, and he did anyway, opening her coat and removing her bra. This is especially egregious as Tashigi is one of the very few women in the series who is always shown wearing very conservative clothing. Oda specifically showed Tashigi getting upset at Smoker’s actions, and Smoker repeatedly refusing to listen to her.

That’s where I draw my line.

Some Final Thoughts I Couldn’t Fit Anywhere Else

Thought The First--Oda has an interesting habit of turning his most despicable, scummy pieces of flaming human garbage into the butt of the joke. Villains like Crocodile and Doflamingo are certainly evil, but it’s the idealized, cool type of evil that makes you almost admire them. There aren’t very many real-world Crocodiles, but just about everyone knows a Spandam, or an Absalom, or a Vander Decken. These kinds of villains aren’t scary because of their physical prowess, but their unyielding obsessions and the power they’re able to wring from the system, and -- surprise, surprise -- all three are either actively trying to be creepy sex pests or coded as such with the visual language of the comic.

And Oda turns them into a mockery.

While there are some who feel like not treating serious issues like sexual assault seriously are doing a disservice to people who have endured similar experiences I think there’s merit to turning them into a laughingstock. As someone much smarter than me said once, if an opinion cannot withstand mockery it’s revealed to be ridiculous, and these scummy-scum villains are certainly ridiculous.

Thought The Second--It’s hard to say how much sexism is a thing in-universe. Kuina is the only one who is explicitly told her dreams were impossible because of her gender, but with the recent reveal confirming that her family came from Wano, which in turn is based on Feudal Japan, it’s hard to say how widespread these beliefs are. Tashigi brought it up again at Loguetown and Bellemere specifically told her girls that they lived in an era where “girls needed to be strong, too”, but otherwise it’s not a topic that’s been explored in any depth

Thought The Third--The in-universe fetishization of mermaids has some implications that I think are unintended but worth discussing. Shirahoshi has a reputation of being one of the most beautiful women in the world despite not leaving her tower for over 10 years (she’s 16). Mermaids whose tails have split are worth less on the slave market than those whose are intact. Even Zoro erased Kokoro from his memory after meeting the more attractive Caime. It’s one of those odd things that when combined with the more obvious racism themes could have some unfortunate implications, and I think could have been avoided had Oda show a little more restraint with some of his jokes. Unintended consequences are still consequences.

Thought The Forth--There are many other instances throughout the series that people bring up with talking about sexism in One Piece. I feel like a lot of these can be explained away individually -- for example, both Belo Betty and Rebecca’s stripperific outfits were inspired by other media, the painting Liberty of the People and Red Sonja respectively; Lola chasing after an obviously abusive man makes a whole lot more sense when you meet Big Mom; Hancock’s love sickness could be seen as an emotionally stunted woman experiencing her first crush, etc., etc -- it’s when they’re all put together that they begin to read as “Problematic”.

It would be impossible to go over all these individually, but I tend to fall on the side of leniency. In the end, everyone has to make their own decisions based on their own values. I’m hardly unbiased, and my enjoyment for the series will undoubtedly make me look the other way when another might call the exact same incident The Worst Thing Ever. The thing is, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most are convinced that theirs don’t stink. I include myself in that statement. In the end it’s a comic for kids. It’s supposed to be fun.

Thought The Last--I have spent entirely too much of my time writing this up, but in the end I guess I have to go back to what I said when I talked about my thoughts on Sanji: Everyone has their own personal line of acceptable bullshit, and for me Oda does more good than bad. Sanji specifically gets very little leniency from me because I don’t like a lot of the gross behavior Oda passes over as a joke. But the female characters themselves, generally speaking? They’re fine. There are other mangaka that have more equal male to female ratios or have women play more active roles in the story, but Oda does a lot better than most other shonen titles I’ve read.

It’s okay to be critical of media you enjoy. It’s okay to complain. But remember that One Piece is a very long series, and there are some fans who have been a round for literally decades. I myself started reading weekly around the time Duval was introduced, way back in 2008. Every time a new batch of fans comes in the same old arguments get stirred to the top of the pot: Sanji is a creep, Oda can’t draw women, why doesn’t Robin ever get to fight?

It can be exhausting to go through the same hoops time and time again. So if you’re someone who is being critical and feel like no one is listening, or that a bunch of fans are going out of their way to defend Oda, that could be one of the reasons why. They’re tired of having a series they enjoy be shit on.

There are other fans who legitimately don’t think that Oda’s done anything wrong, that jokes are just jokes. If you happen to fall in that category, remember that not everyone feels that way. Art reflects life, which in turn reflects art. One Piece is a few million copies away from outselling Batman. To say it isn’t influential to young readers, both in Japan and abroad, is beyond asinine.

I wrote as much as I did because I know this is a topic a lot of people care about, and also so I hopefully don’t have to write about it again. A lot of hours has gone into this project, and it’s been exhausting, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. I’m ready to put it to rest.

I was joking with some friends that I think I’ve hit just about every hot topic issue now, so hopefully I can go back to fun questions like speculating if Wapol can eat a person and poop out a devil fruit.

A three! I think I’m mid range cause I ain’t terrible but there is still shit I gotta improve and grow in my writing

2. Why do you write fanfiction?

to manifest what canon won’t give me and to write more! (though yes it is mainly about the smooching and the— I’ll stop there LOL)

3. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?

Hm! My weird research details? I’m that “fun fact, did you know...” in my fics sometimes LOL! I plan on giving a penthouse for erina in a fic and I went through penthouse listings in Japan for floor layouts and locations💀 my research gives me inspo and depth to stuff I think I lack in comparison to others sometimes.

4. Are there any writers that inspire you?

In terms of fellow fic writers, one of them I can’t name here but she’s an inspiration with her exceptional gift for prose period and her lovely skill at comedy! I want to be as funny as her when I write, I love her ironic situational humor. Other fic writers are @takoyakitenchou, @royaldragonsevgisi15 who I always love sharing ideas with and motivate me to create more! For non-fic writers it would be V.E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, Oda, and Horikoshi! The last two may be mangaka, however they are writers as well to create their stories! The depth these creators have given their worlds and interesting characters theyve given life to are all what I aspire to be like!

5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?

so far uh?? hm everything I’m currently writing are wips lol!! im proud of my wip that has been nicknamed ‘soma panics’ that is a multi-chapter fic that spans like probs 20 plus chapters maybe

6. What element of writing do you find comes easily?

dialogue! it’s so much fun! and character thoughts. I’ve said to people I may be better suited for script writing

I think it’s description, of like setting and showing action. also an expansion of my vocabulary LOL

erina! I think it’s because canon has shown us many of her different faces and range of emotion.

SOMA!! chill ass mofo whos more carefree compared to the common shonen protagonist! for other shokugeki characters I’m not sure just yet because I haven’t flexed my fingers enough for the rest of them.

Sometimes! There are times songs will be on loop and times I just shuffle a playlist. and if I’m writing in random bursts it’ll be with no music but it really does depend lmao I think music is when I’m forcing myself to write?

completely independent ideas, I’ve realized in the past prompts shoot me in the foot often unless I luckily figure something out. but I’m often driven by my own sporadic self interest with shitty ping ponging attention

multi-chap I guess cause I can post without being finished LOLLL but tbh can I really answer? I haven’t finished anything.....

25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!

I can’t answer this question imo because I haven’t finished a fic yet so technically stuff could all fit in the one fic?

26. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?

MYSTERY AND CRIME! I love the genre and I have plot ideas once a blue moon but I can’t dive in because I want to make details that work and reduce plot holes where suspension of disbelief isn’t as needed. I need to study it more (I need to study all the details for any of my fics imo to be confident sometimes LOL)

27. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received?

I don’t think I can say one comment was the nicest because I’ve gotten comments that have given me quite the smiles to my face many times! I know this is a cop out but it’s true!

and also rad. i am never this vocal about my emotions like EVER but this needs to be said your fics are obviously far from perfect, as are mine and everyone else's. but the thing about your works is that they're so well-sanded that it's impossible to find any rough edges or faults in them in terms of cohesion to a plot. your cast is never OOC and the amount of effort you devote to developing your takes on the characters as accurately as possible is unimaginably awe-inspiring.

28. How well do you handle criticism when it comes to your writing?

I’d like to believe I take it often well to try and improve because that’s always my goal. if someone is rude lol that’s not constructive snd is unhelpful. If I disagree with criticism I’ll explain why !

Not yet, but I have some plot ideas I think will let me test this.

elliott fuji, a japanese-american award winning photographer who is erina’s boyfriend in ‘soma panics’ which..causes soma’s panic LOL he’s 30 with slightly wavy black hair. I still haven’t pinpointed his personality just yet...he kind of humble brags for sure an artsy fucker and flirts maybe I’ll make him a lil shy though. he teaches sometimes, and becomes an adjunct photography professor in Tokyo so he can be with erina.

32. Summarize a random fic of yours in 10 words or less.

a cook is unfashionably late in realizing his feelings.

33. Is there anything you wish your audience knew about your writing or writing process?

I am a slow. so slow. motivation who is she? I also write out of order, unfortunately a bit too often.

34. Copy and paste an excerpt you’re particularly fond of.

this should be for the fic ‘soma panics’ it’s either megumi or satoshi talkin to him rn, I’m leaning towards satoshi

“You thought she would always wait for you, didn’t you Soma-kun? To always welcome you home.”

Soma drags his palms down his face and groans. He doesn’t like this at all. He doesn’t shy from confrontation but this is a whole different ballgame. Soma doesn’t play any ball.

“I guess..?” Is his reply, because he thinks he isn’t sure how to answer that.

“You guess?”

Just being questioned again is enough to crack Soma’s pathetic facade as if it was dropped chinaware and he lets out the longest sigh.

“No.”

Coming home means coming home to Nakiri Erina too.

Nakiri Erina is his forever.

(this is a good piece of dialogue tbh so I am also proud of this)

35. Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!

I’ve mentioned it throughout this but the WIP I’ve nicknamed ‘soma panics’ is something I’m super excited to write, but it’s going on slowly...and almost completely out of order. out of all of my writing it showed off that particular habit of mine, along with “what is this, a shoujo manga?!” though the latter is currently being written chronologically now that I’ve posted chapter one and is pretty solid in direction. it was originally supposed to be a one shot but I got impatient and wanted to post at least something for the sorina / soueri fandom.

however, because ‘soma panics’ (I won’t call it that LOL) is my baby I want to keep true to my rule of refusing to post it until I have a draft of the entire fic finished and I’m satisfied with the main points pretty much. due to my writing out of order, I’m worried I’ll change my mind about scenes or want to reflect things in earlier chapters for later ones etc etc

I joined the SnS fandom extremely late, as season five was airing. I was a fan of the manga five years ago and dropped it because I forgot to check for updates when I caught up 😔 I really want to bang out the different fics and aus for sorina that I have before the fandom fizzles out entirely but tbh I’m writing for myself, I’m manifesting what I want to see and I’ll just share it with all my friends to read if no one else will. cause I’m slow broski I dunno what writing fast even is like LMAO I do really want to write faster though, so I can contribute more and let the words free from the discord dms....

Shingen Vignettes

This post is for @thesirenwashere who requested some scenes from Shingen’s route that might happen if he seduced MC in Chapter 8 - I didn’t realize that when I replied privately the ask would disappear xD

I hope you like this - it’s my first try at writing Shingen!

4 vignettes - approx 1500 words, fluff, some angst.

The Morning After

Yukimura stood outside the dining room. His arms were crossed, and his frown furrowed deep lines across his forehead. Sasuke approached, his lord Kenshin in tow. The ninja looked tired, and perhaps, a little hungover. Uesugi looked the way he always did, cold and imperious.

Soft laughter came from the room beyond Yuki, and the clatter of plates.

“Don’t go in there.”

Sasuke stopped, his flat expression conveying a lack of interest to any but the most discerning friend. Only the slight twitch of his brows gave away his curiosity.

Kenshin’s expression of distaste didn’t shift either, but he did stop. “Why?”

“It’s . . . disgusting.” Yuki took a deep breath. “If we wait, I’m sure they’ll finish. Then we can eat in peace.”

“I’m hungry now.” Kenshin started to push past, but Sasuke grabbed his arm.

The ninja caught on a little faster than his lord. “Why don’t we train first? I remember hearing it’s more effective to do so first thing in the morning.”

Yukimura nodded. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d rather go practice with you two than to go back - in there.” He glanced at the closed door, the opaque rice paper looked golden in the morning light, as if only good things lay past it.

Kenshin considered this offer. He almost looked swayed, but then he shook his head. “No. Let go of me.” He pulled his arm from Sasuke’s grasp and began to slide the door open.

Beyond it, in a world of sunlight and drifting blossoms, Shingen and his angel were having breakfast together. The warlord was dressed in his nightrobe, bare legs sticking out under the table. And the girl’s clothes were disheveled. Her kimono hung half off her shoulder, revealing the tender curve of her collarbone, the beginning swell of a breast.

“Is he . . . eating a strawberry off her neck?” Sasuke’s voice sounded strangled.

“No. Just licking the juices,” Yuki groaned, shutting his eyes.

Kenshin slid the panel closed. “I want to go train. Now.”

Goodbye to My Angel

Yukimura brought his lord another bottle of sake. He knelt beside the table and poured them both a full cup. He sat down across from Shingen and watched him toss back the cloudy drink in one gulp.

“Don’t you think you’ve had enough tonight? You aren’t trying to match Kenshin are you?” Yuki frowned as Shingen held his cup out for a refill.

His lord said nothing, just held the cup out.

“You could at least wait until I have a chance to drink too,” Yukimura grumbled.

“I can’t.”

“You can’t wait?”

Shingen filled his own cup. “No. I can’t . . .” His mouth twisted, his eyes closed with sudden pain.

Yuki was to his feet in a heartbeat. “Is it - is it your illness?”

“No. Sit down, Yukimura.” Shingen turned his face away, taking several breaths to bring his emotions back under control.

They were a frightening several moments for Yuki. Though he teased his lord about his various indulgences, he’d never seen him lose control of himself for even a moment. Takeda was a fortress - unassailable. But the walls of his heart were breached, and it showed.

When Shingen turned back, he wore a grim smile. “I am considering our plan. There has to be another way - a better way.”

“Better than what?” Yukimura drained his own cup quickly, hiding his discomfort.

“I can’t just send my angel back to the devil king.”

“Is that what this is about? The girl?”

Shingen’s eyes flashed in the lamplight. “Goddess. Angel. Not a mere ‘girl’ Yukimura.”

“Yes, my lord,” he answered, almost automatically. “But - didn’t she want to go back?”

Shingen sighed, looking down again. “She asked to see them.”

“Then let her.” Those three words gave voice to a thousand concerns. All of the talks they shared about the future of the Kai. Shingen’s illness. The possibilities inherent in victory or defeat.

“I can’t.” The pain in Shingen’s voice hurt Yuki to hear.

With all the compassion he could manage, Yukimura replied. “You must. For her sake.” His lord did not reply.

Princess of the Oda

Mitsuhide and Masamune sat at the campfire. Their chatelaine was in the nearest tent, where Kojuro and Kyubei sat watch.

“Glad to have the lass back.” Masamune poked the fire with a stick.

Mitsuhide nodded. “As am I, for however brief the visit.”

“Brief?”

A new voice interrupted before Mitsuhide could reply. “My luck charm will stay here until I decide otherwise.” Nobunaga’s jaw was firm, his mouth drawn in a frown, but his eyes laughed.

Mitsuhide gave a half bow from where he sat. “As you say, my lord. I’m sure she’ll be obedient to your will.”

“She couldn’t be obedient if her life depended on it.” This, from Ieyasu, as he sat down beside Masamune.

Mitsuhide raised an eyebrow. “I imagine she’s quite biddable. For some.”

This comment earned him a laugh from Masamune and a smile from Nobunaga.

“What does that mean?” Mitsunari’s innocent question floated out of the nearby darkness. “I was going to my tent, but I heard you talking about the chatelaine.” He looked from Mitsuhide to Masamune for an answer.

Ieyasu scowled. “It doesn’t mean anything. Go to bed.”

“It means the lass has been compromised. I suppose she admires something other than Takeda’s tactics or his horsemanship.” Firelight reflected from Masamune’s eyepatch, giving it a red glow. It was quite menacing, with that wild smile he wore.

“Oh, I’m sure she’s a fan of his riding skills,” Mitsuhide disagreed.

Mitsunari smiled. “Oh? Do you think she’s learned how to ride during her time in Kasugayama?”

“I’m sure she has,” Nobunaga answered.

“That’s wonderful. Maybe she and I can ride to Sawayama together one day.” Mitsunari glanced toward her tent. “She would like it there, I think.”

Masamune laughed so hard his eye teared up. Even Mitsuhide could not hide a wide smile.

“You are disgusting.” Ieyasu huffed. “Come on, Mitsunari. We need to rest for tomorrow. Let’s go.” He stood and grabbed his friend’s arm.

“Riding skills,” Nobunaga shook his head.

Mitsuhide shrugged. “Should I put a watch on her during the battle tomorrow?”

Nobunaga considered this. His carnelian eyes were opaque, impossible to guess what thoughts he had in those moments of silence. “No,” he said finally. “I think I will let her have her head. And I think . . . if you force a luck charm, it will only break.”

“That’s right. You have to win them over. Another reason to challenge Takeda. I can’t wait!” Masamune’s fierce excitement made his lord smile.

“Good luck with that,” Mitsuhide replied.

Medicine

Shingen’s throat still held the stitches from his surgery. He touched them with a fingertip.

“What are you thinking about?” His angel rolled over to look at him. Her face was framed by loose hair, her eyes half-lidded and sleepy.

Shingen could not help but brush a kiss to her lips. “I was thinking I needed to hear my goddess before I sleep tonight.”

She shivered, and that half lidded gaze suddenly looked a lot less sleepy. “How do you do that?”

“Mmmm?” He pulled her close and stroked her side lightly, enjoying her curves, even through the fabric of her night robe.

His angel snuggled closer to his chest. “Distract me with . . . mmm, just a kiss. You’re a dangerous man, Mr. Takeda.” She laughed softly, her breath ticking the sensitive skin of his chest.

“I could ask you the same.” He looked down at the top of her head. “You asked what I was thinking. Just, that I came so close to losing my goddess. I still can’t believe I - I let you get away from me. Twice. And yet, you came back to me.”

She nodded, settling an arm against his side. “I knew that we would find each other again.”

Her simple faith and unwavering trust made his heart pound. She really was an angel, he thought.

Moonlight streamed through the curtains, painting the bed in its silver glow. “Just like that first night.” Shingen smiled. His hand slid under her gown to caress skin.

“You’re supposed to be resting.” That’s what she said, but her hand made its way down to his hip, where she drew lazy circles with her fingertips.

“Love restores us.”

His angel laughed. She looked up and kissed him as he rolled her onto her back. “Shingen . . . what about your stitches? And - “

She didn’t have any other words as he began to kiss her belly. He loved the taste of her. And the sounds she made when he gave her pleasure. That was all the medicine a man needed.

ADA: Songs the BSD characters remind me of (even though no one asked)

I’ve recently watched all 3 seasons of the Anime, the movie and the OVA and have started reading the Manga from the beginning. Right now I am only at chapter 40 because I started reading like 2 days ago, so idk stuff that would happen after the Anime storyline (if it goes that much further than season 3 ending, I wouldn’t know). I based this off on either specific lyrics that made me think it would fit the character or a certain vibe I was getting from a character. For some characters it was easier, for some not so much lol It is why some characters have multiple songs that make me think of them while others only have one (if they even do have one, that is – but the ADA does, except for Katai). So please do not rip into me because you think a song might not fit them as well as I do, because I just have not gotten to the latest chapter of the Manga yet, so there are some characters I do not know that well yet but I wanted to do this for fun. Other than that, I hope you enjoy this list~ Also, feel free to add to my list if you have songs that I haven’t mentioned but think would fit the characters, if you want to~

My taste in music is also pretty broad and not limited to certain languages or genres (though I do have my preferences), so I will provide translations of the lyrics in different languages from English. The German ones (like Kontra K, Elif, etc.) were translated by myself (on the spot), for other languages like Romanian or Korean, etc. I had to look up translations on the internet.

Fukuzawa is that anime character that’s visibly been through a lot of shit (and has done a lot of shit as well, even morally grey or black), which could be why he’s so stern and not a man of many words. Marked by life, if you will. He also gives off a very “wise man” kinda vibe right from the beginning, so I think that this song somewhat fits him because it is wondering about the state of the world and human nature.

Oddly enough, the Tanizaki siblings were just as hard for me as Ranpo… There aren’t really that many songs that would make me think of them. But this Romanian one made me (partly) think of him, I also think it’s cute and would probably fit him lol Especially the last four lines make me think of him and Naomi. After all, he’d even burn down the whole world if it was for her sake. All in all, this just sounds like him in the sense of a really supporting person/friend/brother.

Like, she does not have an ability, but she is neither dumb nor completely helpless in all situations. So, there is a slight badass vibe, but not the “I can and I. W i l l . Kick your stupid. Bitch. Ass.” – so a…. “badass princess”? Because she also has that elegant aura about her. I hope I am making sense…?

Haruno strikes me as the kind of person, who’d be a really supportive friend, so I thought this might fit her. I have not seen much of her and her character neither in the anime nor in the manga yet, so I don’t really know whether this is any good or if it does her any justice.

On the other hand, I feel this song would also fit the Tanizaki siblings well.

Take the lyrics quite literally, “blow them away”. The feeling of this song fits him, I think, because of his sheer strength. He just blows away hatred, malice, etc. and is unaffected by any of it as his heart and his head stay innocent and pure, even if naive.

I have to say though, it can be a pun, especially the part of “9mm (gun) on the chest” would be most obvious for it (especially considering that the “on the chest” part does not specify in German whether it’s your own chest or you are holding a gun to someone’s else’s chest lol). In general “puste xy weg” means to blow it away with the air out of your mouth, but colloquially it can also mean gunning down something or someone. And if you apply that meaning to every single line with “blow it away”, the meaning turns around from not letting it bother you to killing it, which I find interesting with this character. (Because he definitely has great potential to actually kill someone with his ability alone.) Though what I thought when I heard this song was that it might fit him with the meaning of him letting nothing bother him.

This makes me think of what Kouyou (I hope I am remembering her name correctly) was saying about her as a flower of darkness, as she was kind of turning in circles (no pun intended)–between wanting to be in the light and “accepting” that she only belongs into the darkness–at the beginning before she finally joined the Agency.

Even though the song in total has a different vibe (and story lmao), these parts of the lyrics makes me think of Kyouka telling Atsushi that there is no saving her, and that the light is no place for her (directly after saving her from the Port Mafia). It kinda makes me think of the part, specifically, where Atsushi suggests going on a “date” and at the end of it, Kyouka wants the last place they go to to be the police station.

I feel like they are kind of mirroring each other in the way they feel about themselves, which is why these lyrics mirror both of them towards each other as both are in need of salvation as they’re drowning in their own minds. Dazai is just better at hiding it from Atsushi.

Technically, lyrically it’s the entirety of the song, but I will not write down all of it lmao And it’s the Atsushi and Dazai parallels here again. It’s not just the ending with the animation that shows it for me, but the lyrics reflect both of them in them as well. I absolutely loved this ending. I never ship characters as I do not care about that, but I really love these two (separately)~ (What they mean for each other aka what they might mean for each other in the future [peace of mind/finding worth for Atsushi, and a reason to live for Dazai, etc.], how they’re already helping each other [Dazai helping Atsushi with feeling worthless, and Dazai finding a bit of piece of mind], etc. etc. etc.) I haven’t loved 2 characters in an anime as much as this in quite a long time (The last time was Kougami and Akane in Psycho Pass) as I find making up characters as complex as them and make them fit together as well as them/make them complement each other/balance each other out is actually pretty hard to do really well.

Making up this list took waaaaay longer than it should’ve. (I did not include Katai because I couldn’t think of a single song for him, sorry.)

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?). She's mainly a character just for the fanservice. As stated above, she's selfish, greedy and extremely shallow, and if money of any sort is involved she'll do just about anything. Also, she doesn't exactly treat some of her crew the best. i don’t think this is actually too unpopular, but the fact that he’s not really been his own character yet? i don’t disagree with the idea that Oda created Sabo because he regretted killing off the Cool Older Brother figure. But tbh i don’t particularly care, i think Oda has proved himself a consistently good storyteller (when it comes to male characters ahahah) and will make Sabo work.

5 Otome/Romance Game Men I Adore

Thank you so much @pseudofaux for tagging me! Also, thank you for saying that your own list was not in order or an exhaustive list because I often feel pressured to make a perfect list in these types of situations lol but if pseu was chill I can also be chill (EDIT: no there’s actually a lot of screaming below and absolutely no chill, I’m sorry, I lied.)

I always talk too much and break too many rules when I do these things but that's just how I am lmfao so I'm gonna start off by saying IkeSen's Nobunaga Oda is my absolute favorite otome game man of all time... but I'm not going to officially include him on this list because I talk about him too much as it is already and I feel like enough people love him anyway. However, if anyone is interested in hearing me talk about Nobunaga ad nauseam, I will gladly entertain you.

On to my list ~

1. Caramia, OZMAFIA!! - Ozmafia!! is my favorite otome game (MC be damned) and I love this man sooooooo much. His wedding CG has actually been the background on my phone for ages now. You know the "that's where the trouble began, that damned smile" meme? THAT'S FUCKING FOR HIM THAT'S HIM!!!!!!!!! That smile ruined my entire life in the best possible way and I have not known peace since. I guess I have a bit of A Thing for loveable, charismatic leaders. I just love a man who is full of power but big of heart ... and a little bit of a dumbass. Caramia is just like the total package... He protecc, but he also attacc, and he also a snacc. Oh, and he can cook!!!

2. Fenrir Godspeed, Ikemen Revolution - Fenrir is really, really special to me and I put him in his own category entirely. In reality, Fenrir and Ray are actually tied as my IkeRev biases (and honestly I prefer them together; Alice is optional). Fenrir is actually so close to my heart that I refuse to even look at almost all fanfiction with him in it, with few exceptions. The fear that someone could "ruin" him by writing him in a way that even slightly disagrees with the way I picture him in my head (and I have seen it) is really too much for me to handle. Is this unhealthy of me? Probably, but I tend to avoid the situation all together so it doesn't matter. Not only do I self-insert in my games but I'm also not one of those people who separate fiction from real-life really well, so all of my biases are people I'd actually fall for IRL. And Fenrir is really special to me because he is actually the most perfect, ideal boyfriend in my mind but he is someone I absolutely do not deserve IRL and would probably run from for fear of ruining things. :'] So while any otome game man is a fantasy, he's like... top tier fantasy for me. He's just so perfectly easy-going, such a Prince Charming, Knight in Shining Armor, easy to read, so ready to love you, SO MUCH FUN... he's a Good Boi without being naive and innocent... he's like a wild-yet-safe adventure ugh he's like p e r f e c t I cry

3. Raymond, Blood in Roses - I don't necessarily think Blood in Roses is a great game; it definitely has its hits and its misses BUT it did grant me this one amazing man and therefore I will never uninstall it. I mentioned that I like lovable leaders but I also thoroughly enjoy being able to break down a brick wall of a man. Raymond starts off by being pretty cold to MC, caring really only for his duty (I love a loyal man), but takes MC under his wing anyway... and slowly realizes he has feelings for her and then of course becomes someone who is willing to die for her. This is peak romance, don't @ me.

4. Zen, Mystic Messenger - Zen is actually not my favorite to romance (that honor belongs to Jumin) but he is my #2. More importantly than the romance though, he is such a fucking good guy in every single route... ignoring all of Chertiz's little homophobic undertones of course (man do I wish Chertiz would rewrite Mystic Messenger so it's not so conservative, pleaseeee). He is willing to stand up for and protect MC in every route, not just his own. In all routes, he offers himself to MC as a shoulder to lean on, someone to cry to. He is always helpful to everyone!! Even though he and Jumin don't see eye to eye on most things, Zen is still ultimately supportive of him and wants what's best for him. ZEN IS A TRUE BRO. He's also super chill like he's all about his acting and performing... but he just also wants to drink beer, eat street food, and smoke cigarettes all day. I know people get turned off by his narcissism but fucking look at him okay he has every (!!!) right to be narcissistic. Plus, he doesn't let his ego get in the way of love and friendship and that's very important !!! In this essay, I will -

5. Leonardo DaVinci, Ikemen Vampire - I just want to type his name and send like 150000 weary emojis after it and be done with it. Honestly, it is at the point where I think he is on Nobunaga level for me. I have fallen very, very hard for him. I have two IkeVamp accounts and between the two of them I think I have done his full route about six or seven times. Every time I get to the scene where Comte suggests that Leonardo breaks it off with MC, I want to scream at the top of my lungs "BUT DADDY I LOVE HIM" like Ariel does in The Little Mermaid (Leonardo has his own moment where he internally shouts "I LOVE HER!!!!" so we're even tbh). First of all, HE IS SO FUCKING KNOWLEDGEABLE HE KNOWS SO MUCH AND HE KEEPS LEARNING THAT SHIT IS HOT. Also, I have seen people disagree with me on this but I personally don't think he's patronizing to MC. His MC, unfortunately, is written in that way where "ugh he's so mature and I is babey" so, of course, there are moments where he plays off of that but he literally has SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE and he never is like "wow I can't believe you don't know that you idiot" to MC even though the opportunity to do that is plentiful. He will tease her, sure, but that's totally different than being mean about it. The best thing about him being so intelligent is the fact he's also a fucking dumbass (I love me a dumbass, as you all know). He loves MC so, so much even though he doesn't show that in the smartest of ways all the time... but... he fucking walked into a dress shop and designed a whole ass custom dress for her?? He even picked out the fabric??? And then he pretended like it was Comte who chose it??? HELLOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVE HIM I'M ACTUALLY SCREAMING RIGHT NOW THAT'S WHY I HAVE TO TYPE IN CAPS I LOVE HIS MIND I LOVE HIM

6. Trash, Aloners - If you have never played Aloners, you really should because it is seriously an amazing visual novel (thank you @dear-mrs-otome for casually mentioning this game like one time in a discord server otherwise I’m not sure that I would have found out about it). You can get it for free (or pay $5 for the redeux version), so there’s really no excuse unless you don’t have a computer. The love between MC and Trash is not the main plot of the story necessarily, but Trash is such a good man and he deserves the lovin'. Trash is like the perfect combination of sweet and snarky, respectful yet teasing, competent but dumb, has a good heart but doesn't always make the best decisions... in conclusion, what choice did I have but to fall helplessly in love???

How strictly do you follow canon? — I do try to follow it as good as I can, but there are things that make no sense so I filled these holes with my own headcanons and that of my dear friend and partner :)) Some stuff got changed thanks to this, like his height (the one from Oda came way to late for it! So I keep what I had started for him!), or why he returned to be under the world government (which I still need to write... sorry for that >.<)

SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals. — humhummmm.... first off first he is a wereleopard! (ok devil fruit user and so but... KITTY!) a typical asshole kitty behavior as well, someone who still has his morals (like not hitting Robin when she is in handcuffs and all. Even frowning when Spandam hits her.) He has very nice long wavy hair that you can hold on. A very nice build body with interesting scars and tattoos. Aside of this, you better not tease him to much, as said above he is still an asshole kitty. Thought one that has a heart for his little bird friend and his weirdo family called CP9 as well. (even if he would deny it thanks to a certain wuff)

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?). --- You already know that he is an asshole kitty, and as this he fought against Luffy. Dared to take Robin with him to Enis lobbies and hurt so many others. He has no problems with killing and absolutely no problem in being a sadist as that. Shows as well how much he hated what he had to do (ok if it comes to canon) to work for so fucking ass long in Water Seven :,))) so yeah, asshole kitty again, just this time the enemy of enemies that has to be hated cause he caused the beloved Strawhats (AND GOING MERRY) pain.

What inspired you to rp your muse? — At first it was just a fun roleplay to see if I can play him even or if not in a little forum like chat with three friends. Ok there was someone else, who made me not start him for a good year or two more... Blocked that person when I started to roleplay him on tumblr :,)) so that they don’t come at me with their weird... ideas. (and forgot who it was but I bet it will come again if I see them *rubs chin*) Aside of this, I simply liked him and had my ideas already for him :,))

What keeps your inspiration going? — Well how to write that? It sometimes feel like you have him living in your apartment and he just comes and says “Give me some time already.” just like the demanding kitty that he is (and maybe even a tiny part of me by now... me and cats!)

If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why? — It’s their mind I can’t force them to like my headcanons :) and they can’t force me to like theirs ^^ You won’t be able to please EVERYONE so I try to keep it so that I can have fun and my followers as well.

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it? — Kinda the same as the part of the headcanons :) everyone has a different taste, I can’t await that they like it or not ^^ aside of me always being the first to criticize myself xDDDD

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it? — Well it is their thing? I too have characters that I dislike or even hate ^^ but going against the mun or person that likes this character? nah... Instead I am more curious on why they like them and ask things, which I would love to see from others with Lucci too ^^

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors? — Please do, just please do that in a nice way :)) I am not a native english speaker and even have problems in my mother language. I just can’t promise that it will stuck... *hides*

Though I do add my own headcanons. ^^ I need to update some of my pages so that they’re more in line with canon, though. Especially Katsuie’s modern verse, now that the Basara Academy anime has been out for over a year... XD

Try to list everything that makes your muse interesting (in your opinion) to make them spicy for your mutuals. — Katsuie comes off as really normal and very chill at first, which lets him easily have a first meeting interaction with most muses without angering them / fighting them / killing them / etc. But the more you delve into his thoughts and the things he does, you can see how warped his mindset is when it comes to certain subjects / people. ^^ And he’s a depressed emo kid, so I'd imagine that a lot of people on Tumblr would connect with him over that. XD

Now the opposite. List every reason why your muse might not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom think?). — Back when SB4 first came out, Katsuie got a lot of flak for his creepy obsession with Oichi, which is admittedly pretty bad. Since she’s, you know, married, and Katsuie’s willing to go so far as to kill Nagamasa, her husband, for a chance (?) to be with her. Not to mention Katsuie’s anime route, where he gets himself kicked out of the Oda clan, destroys his own hopes and dreams in the process by killing everyone in the Azai clan (Nagamasa, Oichi, and Maria), and finally gets mercy-killed by the former shogun. Yikes. ^^; I’m honestly surprised that, in my five years roleplaying Katsuie, no one’s sent in anon hate to me because of Katsuie’s behavior. (Unfortunately, a former rp partner of mine once got anon hate years ago for shipping Katsuie and Oichi. ;u;)

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐎 𝐑𝐏 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐄? — Katsuie’s actually my very first muse ! ^^ I started writing him at the end of my senior year of high school. I think I’d been into Sengoku Basara for a year or two at that point, and I’d been reading translations that people were making for SB4. I’d also been following Sengoku Basara roleplayers / ask blogs (there were several active ones around back then), and I really enjoyed reading their interactions, so I wanted to pick a Sengoku Basara character so that I could roleplay with them, too ! I tried writing for a couple of potential muses in private to test them out, but it felt most natural to write for Katsuie, so I went with him as my first muse ! I probably chose him because I’d gone through a bunch of not-so-fun stuff in high school, so I saw Katsuie going through a bunch of not-so-fun stuff in the Oda clan and sympathized with that.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐒 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐆𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐆? — To my knowledge, I’ve been the only one roleplaying Katsuie semi-consistently over the past five years ? He’s just such an interesting character to me —– it’d be too sad to close this blog and not see anyone’s Katsuie interact with other people’s muses anymore. ;u; It’s something I’ve been a little worried about recently because I know I’m going to be more busy in the future, since I’m (hopefully) going to finish up my research this year, get my master’s degree next year, and then go straight into a serious full-time job. I don’t want to give up rolepaying, but if I get too busy next year... >.<

Also, playing the mobile game Sengoku Basara: Battle Party every day helps ! And my rp partners are awesome. ^^

If someone disagrees with a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why? — Yeah, because it’s interesting to see how other people view Katsuie ! From my point of view, if someone disagrees with one of my headcanons on Katsuie, it means that they’re interested enough in him and have thought about him enough to have their own opinions on him. It’s so so so so difficult to get anyone interested in muses from a series as niche and JP-only as Sengoku Basara, so I’d honestly be happy if someone cared enough about Sengoku Basara and Katsuie to disagree with me on my headcanons for Katsuie, as strange as that sounds. XD

If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it? — I think my answer to this question would be basically the same as the last one. I probably wouldn’t change my portrayal at this point, though ? I’ve had it for a long time and I’m actually really happy with it. ^^ Probably the only reason why I’d change my portrayal is if someone found / made more translations of the games that Katsuie is in (SB4, Sumeragi, Sanada Yukimura-den, Batopa, etc.) and I found canon details in the new translations that really clashed with details in my portrayal. In that case, I’d change my portrayal to match with canon.

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it? — That’s fair, honestly, especially when it comes to things Past!Katsuie / Kaioh has said and done, and even just things Default!Katsuie has done. Katsuie’s a really messed-up dude, and his views on things can be really twisted sometimes. And hey, if someone hates Katsuie, at least that means that they care about him on some level, right ? XD Apathy is the one thing that really kills my muse.

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors? — Sure ! If they can find them. XD I edit my drafts A LOT before I actually publish them, so usually I manage to catch all my mistakes, although the occasional mistake slips through every so often. Hemingway Editor is honestly a lifesaver when it comes to finding simple spelling errors and helping me write my sentences so that they’re a reasonable length and don’t have too many adverbs / phrases written in passive voice / etc.

Do you think you are easygoing as a mun? — I think so ! ^^ I just want to roleplay my muses and have a good time watching them grow and form relationships with other muses, that’s all. If there’s something I don’t like, I know to mute / unfollow / block / etc. and move on. Life’s too short to get involved in drama.

I am so glad my analysis was helpful! I usually have a lot of thoughts about Dazai because I’ve read so many of his books and was drawn to the series because of his character (and Kunikida’s character design).

I have received a couple asks about the former mafia boss being Dazai’s father theory (you were the first to ask, but I just had to think about the other stuff for a little while so I got to your ask a little after the others). I’ll leave the links for them here and here. And if you want to look at the Dazai based analyses I’ve written you can find them here.

Dazai’s Dense Behavior and What Lies Beneath

This is the first thing I thought about. Dazai staring at the sky in a daze. The first time I read this part I thought, “Typical Dazai, slacking off again.” But then later in the story we find out that he was really watching the sky for Atsushi coming with Q’s doll! Just because he looks bored doesn’t mean that what he’s doing isn’t something very important and requires a lot of strategy and concentration. But then he might also be bored because this is far too easy for him? I mean, he an Ranpo did effectively plan the defeat of the Guild in a few seconds while Ranpo snacked, Dazai folded a paper airplane, and Atsushi gave them a very confused look from the doorway.

I have to wonder if Dazai wasn’t trying to appear dense right here so Kunikida wasn’t on to him. He was making a snarky comment about Kunikida’s wearing glasses being the reason he is going to solve the case, but there could have been a serious side to the comment. Dazai is very cryptic. He probably really meant that this was a case that Kunikida had to take the lead on. Knowing him he’d already connected the dots to the Azure King (I mean, he knew that Akutagawa and Atsushi would be the new Double Black from the moment he met Atsushi so this case would have been easy for him to at least know that much from early on). I think he let Kunikida take the reigns on the case as a way to see what Kunikida could do and understand how he works. The light novel the Azure King episodes were based on was actually set 2 years before the current timeline and tells about Dazai’s entrance exam to become a member of the Agency. At this point in the light novel Dazai was not yet partners with Kunikida, so he was trying to figure him out. He was acting dense to 1) keep Kunikida in the dark about what Dazai was really capable of and 2) to stay out of the case so he could watch Kunikida and see how much Kunikida could figure out. Also, I have to add that Kunikida didn’t buy his acting dumb (at least not entirely), which is one of the reasons Dazai respects Kunikida (I mean, he even told Atsushi in the OVA that the only logical choice for the next leader of the Agency is Kunikida).

This is one of my absolute favorite scenes! The whole first half of episode 2 is Dazai acting dense and putting on a show to get Atsushi out of his house and to the Agency for his entrance exam. Most of this episode he is acting dense for that real, significant purpose. But then Kunikida comes up and he purposely misses the point about the accusation that he is the most problematic and unreliable member of the Agency by being comically surprised at Kunikida’s ability to mimic people! This one doesn’t have any deeper meaning, but he does have a pattern of trying to get out of little comments (typically from Kunikida or Chuuya) by playing dumb and drawing attention to anything other than himself. For a brilliant genius he can sure act like a spoiled child!

I have to admit that I was fooled by the whole headphones trick in episode 3. I completely didn’t see it coming when Dazai showed up and revealed that he had planted a listening device in Higuchi’s pocket when he asked her to do a lover’s suicide with him and that he had been listening to her the entire time! Not even Kunikida suspected it (actually, after the Azure messenger incident Kunikida is strangely unable to pick up on when Dazai is kidding or not. There’s the whole hanging health method thing in episode 1, the thing about being too neurotic in episode 2, him being the last to know that Dazai was a member of the mafia…). Anyway, Dazai kept his whole plan and his actions secret even after the enemy had left. He will act like he knows nothing in front of everyone, even his own partner. I suspect that this saves him a lot of trouble in explaining his plans. It’s a lot easier to just do it and not have to rely on others or risk other people interfering.

This is another moment where Dazai is acting obviously dense about the situation, but this time it’s a show of bravado to let Fyodor know he’s onto him. The whole scene is a big game of I-know-you-know-that-I-know-you-know-I-know. Dazai was starting off strong by waiting until Fyodor was looking for where he put his hat only to turn around and find Dazai with a dorky grin on his face wearing said hat. Fyodor knows that Dazai is onto him because Dazai’s got his hat, but I would say it’s a safe bet that Dazai isn’t giving anything else away from his facial expression. He obviously knows something, but how much and what exactly is hard to tell. Dazai uses this tactic of acting like he’s oblivious to keep his plans and intentions a secret. Like Dazai told Atsushi (in the manga scene, it didn’t make it in the anime), what matters is information and the one with the most information will win. He’s keeping his information from the enemy.

Basically, I think Dazai is the scariest and is hiding the most when he acts dense. That’s what is so scary about the recent manga chapters with him in them; he’s so serious all the time. Does he have anything to hide? Does he have a backup plan (or 300)? A serious Dazai makes me nervous because he doesn’t look as confident or relaxed. It makes me think that he really is struggling to know what his enemy is thinking.

Why does Mori want Dazai to come back to the Mafia?

Mori asks for Dazai to come back the the Mafia as an executive member. It is obvious why he would want to, because with Dazai as his right hand man the mafia would basically be unbeatable. Dazai is the only person who is shown as being able to stand up to Fyodor. Even Ranpo struggles more than Dazai with that, and no one else has even come close to rivaling Dazai and Fyodor’s capabilities. Mori is another one of those characters who has a brilliant mind and is an expert strategist, and he is the one who trained Dazai and should know best what Dazai is capable of. For Mori to ask Dazai to come back over training someone else shows that Dazai really is the only person who has the skills and potential to do what Mori needs him to do. But I think that Mori is kind of tied down by his position as the Mafia boss. Because he’s the leader he can’t make any hasty or risky moves that involve him, the face of the Mafia. Dazai on the other hand doesn’t have that holding him back and he is free to focus only on the task at hand, not what is best for the Mafia as a whole. Of course he’s going to consider that, because Dazai considers everything, but he doesn’t have to prioritize the Mafia the same way Mori does.

Where the confusion comes in is how Mori thinks Dazai left of his own accord and Dazai accuses Mori of forcing him out of the Mafia. Dazai claims that Mori’s purpose for doing so was to get rid of Dazai to protect Mori’s position.

I personally agree with Dazai that Mori forced him out of the mafia. This incident happens at the end of the Dark Era arc when Mori send Oda to his death facing off against Gide so the Mafia can get a Special Abilities Licence from the government. Mori did this knowing that Dazai had been spending time with Oda and also knowing how close Oda was to him. Mori, like Dazai, doesn’t let on how much he knows and acts oblivious. And Dazai is very aware of the fact that Mori does this because he taught Dazai to do it (either explicitly or through example). This is the reason I think Dazai is accurate when he says Mori forced him out of the Mafia because he was afraid of Dazai overthrowing him. Dazai did not agree with how Mori handled the situation and would have done things differently. Because Dazai is the kind of person to disagree with authority, has his own way of doing things, and will do whatever he has to in order to get the results he wants then at some point the only logical choice for Dazai would be to either 1) leave the Mafia like he did or 2) dispose of Mori and take his place. Mori has been in that position because he was the one who killed the previous boss (in front of Dazai, so Dazai could very easily follow Mori’s example), so he understands what is going on in Dazai’s head better than anyone else.

Out of komi's first year and seconed year class, do you have a best girls list?

OOOOF, that’s a thought one.

you see, I HAD a best girl list during the first year, but after the adding of Ase and Mambagi, I had to rewatch it. another problem is that, from the second year, we know only three people (ok, maybe 6 counting even Mambagi’s ex-classmates) so a objetcive list is nearly impossible. the one I’ll write here is a mixed list, with second/first year girls:

AH WAIT JUST BEFORE I START! I won’t count Komi(because guys it’s already difficult as this, with Komi I’m going to kill me) and Najimi (for obvious reasons). even Yamai because she is not in any sense best girl but I like her …s-some…how… but I know if I would have put her in any position the fandom would have quartered me, fairly . so let’s go:

10th place: Kishi Himeko

for who wonders: YES SHE IS KISHI-SAN. we (or I) are waiting for her intuduction since her first appearance. we know only bits of her personality (she is the opposite of Onigashima probably, she is the ‘watcher’ over Yamai extravagances as we can see in ch 129, and she is a little masochist (ch 62)) but I already know I’ll love her. Why am I putting here this low? becase WE DON’T KNOW MORE. so, if Oda-sensei is listening, please. PLEASE SHOW US HER MORE.

9th place: Agari Himiko

I know a lot of people will argue on this, and to be honest, I am totally with you. She was the first first friend Komi made out of her own, she’s truly cute and I miss her, but she is here because I found her “masochism” too excessive, like the creepyness of Yamai. In the end I’m happy the author gave her another trait (her sweet tooth) but, the competition is hard.

8th place: Katou Mikuni

Listen: I relly like her and Sasaki relationship. They are truly funny togheter but that’s the point. TOGHETER. if split up, Sasaki can hold her place while she… well, less than her. But hey, a girl with glasses that loves strategic games and tought guy? she could be best girl in any other manga! but this is not any other manga, this is Komi-san; the competition is savage.

7th place: Satou Rikido

“uh, you put a character that appeared once over Agari?” YES. I love her sweet personality and I’d like to see more about her, how she slowly becomes independent. I hope Oda is listening to me.

I really, REALLY, like Nakanaka, gamer girl, a little goth and nard to the bone, but the screen time is not merciful with her. Always with Yamai to compete over Komi’s affection and with the “Komi-sama god” thing going on, and I think, althought I love their fights, makes her weak in a stand alone situation, ‘cause I think “man if Yamai was here what would have happened?”. I liked a lot the NOTsuper smash bros chapter (ch 48) so I hope we’ll see Nakanaka and Komi play Apex Legends someday

5th place, and I already feel the knife on my throat: Mambagi Rumiko.

now, before you rightfully burn me on the stake, I wnat you to know this position is based on purely personal taste. She’s in the second year on the top three, she’s cute, gentle, kind and exuberant. buuuuut the treatment she gives to Tadano is too much on my book, with more Tsun than Dere, so… yeah. now you can burn me.

4th place: Sasaki Ayami

As I said before, I love Sasaki-Katou dinamics, but I feel that, taken them singulaly, Sasaki would be more interesting than Mikuni (as if it’s possible). she is amazing, with her Yo-yo persona and her shipping face (you know the one) makes her one of my favourite girls in Komi-san’s first year patch.

3th place: Ase Ase

“YOU HAVE PUT ASE HIGHER THAN MAMBAGI?” YES, AND I’M NO ASHAMED FOR IT. Maybe I’m so attached to her because I find her truly relatable, but I think Ase is best girl (after Komi) of the second year. And if you disagree with me I don’t care, I have Naruse on my side.

2nd: Otoni Kaede

She is the best. every time I saw her I were always on the verge of tears. taken alone or with Onemine, she remains hilarious. I really miss her.

and now, before the first place, some honorable mentions!

Yadano Makeru (i’m sorry girl but the competiton is really tought), Onigashima Akako (i feel her rage for gamcha games, but she is literally a time bomb), Inaka Nokoko, (too little things I can say about here, but she’s cute and a genderbend version of Midoriya), Miwa Omojiri (teacher, not proper student. and if she were her I would have changed again the pool), Rei Natsukido (best child), Komi Shuuko (best mom), Tadano Hitomi (best Najimi-like girl) and Tadano Hitohito (best)

And the first, indisputable place goes to… Onemine Nene

Guys, if you have been surprised over this, do you even follow my blog? I LOVE Onemine, I said more than once, she’s so cool, kind, gives you the “big sis” energy down to your spine, the “it’s all under controll” sensation. further more, she’s GINGER, small chest, and reminds me a lot my girlfriend. Even If Komi were in this ranking, I would have put her in first place with Shouko.

My Thoughts On Anti-SaNa Arguments

First off I would like to say that this isn’t in reference to any specific post or blog. This post is simply why I disagree with the general arguments I’ve seen against SaNa since I started reading OP. I might add on to it later if I have the time but we’ll see were it goes.^^

1. Sanji loves all Women

To these people’s credit, I personally think this is the strongest argument against SaNami. Sanji is definitely an idiot when it comes to all pretty women and expresses himself in a similar manner with them all. My shipping bias has not hidden this from me. In fact, I can perfectly understand why this would be brought up by people who disagree with the ship. But, with that said, I find it hard to believe these people honestly think Oda gives the same importance to all these girls when it comes to Sanji’s affection. It is definitely hard to say that Oda does not give more time and care to Sanji’s love for Nami when compared to all these other women, especially after this arc.This arc took SaNa and, at least for me, made me believe Oda changed his mind about romance in OP. Sure, Sanji holding Nami like a bride while she is wearing a wedding dress in Thriller Bark was always a pretty powerful image but it wasn’t until this arc where I saw solid evidence of Nami being different from all other women.

It was by no accident Oda included Nami in Sanji’s fight against Luffy. In a scene Sanji had to give up his former life to become a Vinsmoke. He made Sanji have his worst moment in the series right in front of a crying Nami and had Nami slap him, drop the “-Kun” at the end of his name and say goodbye to him while crying. To me it’s pretty clear It was all done because of his unique relationship with Nami. It was all done because Nami slapping Sanji hurts more than any other girl slapping him. I’m sure everyone who disagrees with SaNa, when being honest, would agree with this much. Sanji does act like an idiot with Robin but her slapping him would simply not hold the same weight because they just dont have the same connection Sanji and Nami have.

Furthermore, Nami slapping Sanji is overwhelming development in their relationship, and a development that didn’t need to be there. It’s also a development that is not there for any other ship. Nami could have been with Chopper or Brook or just completely absent from that moment. Heck, Luffy fighting Sanji alone would have been pretty powerful by itself considering he was alone when he recruited Sanji, Yet Oda chose to have a women Sanji has been going heart eyes since the beginning be there.

Then we have 869, were Sanji catches Nami and carries her bridal style. It is an obvious parallel to him carrying her the same way in Thriller Bark and it even seems Pudding saw something between them. It is a great moment that is unique to SaNa.

Even stronger evidence than that is this panel right here.

Pudding had been all over Sanji with her heart eyes and nosebleeds every chapter, yet we only saw Sanji ignoring her to think about Nami. 892 confirmed this panel was not a nakama thing, it was Sanji thinking about the well being of the person who his heart truly belongs to. If Nami was not special for him there would have been no reason for Sanji not to have gone crazy over Pudding. No reason for Oda to include this panel were he is not thinking about the whole crew like he had been up until this point. Pudding is someone he has stated as being attractive before, yet Oda chose to have him act unlike his usual self around Pudding just to make his preference for Nami obvious to the reader.

2. SaNami is just a Gag

To be completely honest with you, this one is the one that annoys me the most.

Sure, SaNa has a bunch of gag moments. I don’t have a problem admitting that. What I do object to is when people try to label SaNa as just a gag. Did these people forget Sanji taking a knife to the back for Nami? Did these people forget about both bridal carries? Did they even read 854? I just don’t get it tbh. Sanji loves Nami no matter how people spin things. There is absolutely no reason why Oda would not develop their relationship into something deeper either. To me, even with all these development moments taken away, these gags still show that Sanji is in love with Nami. Even in gags SaNa has the most love shown by Oda. To me, this argument is just about people trying to completely dismiss SaNa. That’s all I will say about it.

3. Nami does not love Sanji

I know there will be a lot of people who will disagree with me here but, I agree with this. I know there have been a lot of SaNa moments since Zou but I personally don’t think Nami is in love with Sanji just yet.

Right now Nami is only interested in her dream and is not interested in finding love. This likely will stay the same as well. There is no reason why she would get together with anyone until the end of the series. She might not be in love with Sanji right now but there is no reason she can’t develop feeling for him later on. Sanji is always asking her if she loves him and she has always said yes. Of course it wasn’t serious but it could definitely become a reality. Sanji is the only one who is in love with her. To me this already puts him miles above the rest if Oda decided on writing romance.Especially considering how heart broken Sanji would be if the person he loved got married to someone else.

4. Sanji Only Feels Lust For Nami

Another argument I don’t understand. It has already been shown many times already that Sanji loves Nami’s personality. Throughout the entire manga we have panels of Sanji confessing his love whenever Nami does anything note worthy. This panel being my absolute favorite ( It reminds me of Nami complimenting him on his dedication to not hitting a women in EL)

I mean, bringing up 889 again, that panel were Sanji is thinking about Nami has absolutely nothing to do with Lust. He is being 100% serious there and it is done because of his genuine feelings for her. I know he is a perv and that Nami is someone he gets nosebleeds from all the time, but it is pretty obvious when its just his lust and when its not. The face he makes with his tongue out and with a nosebleed is obviously him being a pervert, him going noodle mode (892) is him being silly because of love but moments like 889 is not like that at all. It is not a gag or anything. To me, it is one of many example of Oda showing us that Sanji’s feelings for Nami are stronger then just physical attraction.

5. Sanji Is A Disgusting Perv/Nami Is Gold digger and Heartless

This is another one of these arguments that I just don’t get. It always felt like other people were trying their best to turn moments Oda clearly meant as a joke into something disgusting and horrible. I’m not joking when I say that I’ve seen Sanji being called a rapist and Nami being called everything from a bitch to a heartless money whore. To me this is all brought up in an attempt to shame SaNa shippers and not really much of an argument. Oda has never made Sanji out to be what these people claim he is and Nami has also never been shown to be this heartless and bitchy person these people believe.

It’s just funny really. I mean, everybody is more than welcome to dislike a character, there are plenty of characters that I dislike, but who in their right mind would think an author would turn his main characters into such terrible people? It’s really stupid to me. Is Sanji a Pervert? Yes. Has Nami used his affection for her once or twice before? Yes. Does this mean SaNa can’t happen? Of course not. Have these moments even been anything more than a joke? Absolutely not. Debasing Sanji in an attempt to make him look too bad to be with Nami or doing the same for Nami doesn’t change anything in the manga or what Oda will write. If Oda chooses he can make SaNa happen regardless of the stupid stuff being said about his characters. It’s all up to him. Being hateful never solved anything and people need to learn this fact.

Well, that’s it for now. I might add on to this later on like I said on top but these are all the regular anti-sana arguments I keep on reading. I hope you guys liked reading it.
