WIP Snip Sunday

On an actual Sunday, no less! Ok multiverse fic, Harry has been fighting Voldemort for years, Draco has joined him to help him. They have managed to bring another Potter and Malfoy into their world from another world. Am now at the stage of realising that it's quite confusing having two separate people called Harry and Potter (or Draco and Malfoy for that matter) but over 130k into this fic and I can't do anything about that now. So for the purposes of this snip, Harry and Draco belong to the world where Voldemort is still alive, and Potter and Malfoy have come from another universe to help them. Potter and Malfoy are a couple, and Malfoy has lots of scars from the war. They have all snuck out to a pub to go drinking. There's a bit of tension as everyone thinks Harry fancies Malfoy.

“May I have a glass, please,” Draco said to the barman, who smiled back absently then looked again, properly, sharply.

“What is this?” he said, sliding an empty shot glass across to Draco. “A twin convention?”

“Just call us double trouble,” Malfoy said. “Though it’s a bit embarrassing for him, being the ugly twin, you know.”

Draco looked down at the bar unhappily, his hair swinging forward to hide his face. Malfoy was rolling his glass between the fingers of one hand, the other hand raised to his own face, rubbing tiredly at the scarred side.

“Don’t,” Potter said gently, and plucked Malfoy’s hand into his own, lowering it away from his face. “Don’t say those things, you don’t need to—”

“I’m not—” Malfoy smiled at Potter, eyes flickering to Draco for a second then back. “I’m really not. It was just a joke. We’re both the ugly twin, right Draco?”

“Well according to Harry you’re the good-looking one,” Draco said crisply. “I rather think I agree with him too. Our hair is really good like that. I always thought about growing mine but I was worried I’d look too like… umm, like Lucius. But—” he looked at Malfoy approvingly, top to toe. “You don’t, at all. It suits you.”

"Thanks," Malfoy said, sounding pleased, and he shoved in closer to Draco at the bar and nudged him with his shoulder. "We should have a drink."

The barman was still watching them, mystified.

"You are all barmy," he said matter-of-factly. "You—" he pointed at Malfoy "—look good. Very good. And you—" he pointed at Draco "—also look good. And whatever's going on here—" he waved a hand at Harry and Potter "—your boyfriends, or whatever, look good. You all look good, okay? Christ, I should be charging by the hour for this."

He slung the bottle of tequila across the bar at them.

"Please," he said fervently. "Just, keep drinking."

"You know," Harry said thoughtfully, watching the barman departing swiftly, "it's actually not a bad idea."

"why should I get invested in shows if they'll just get canceled" I was deeply invested in Heroes (2006) and it was not canceled, it just got really terrible. I also got really invested in the sandwich I had a few weeks ago despite it only lasting like 15 minutes. You must embrace the ephemeral. You must be willing to love things that may not love you back, that might betray you, or that may die an untimely death. As the great philosopher Mr. Mitchell Lee Hedberg said "I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end."

#now granted he did die of a drug overdose but you know. one can take the good lessons #anyway. point being i understand being deeply frustrated with the state of the tv and film.#but also we can admit that for every gem canceled there's like three real duds too #idk if you want something that's guaranteed to have a bunch of seasons and you know the ending for go watch shows from the 70s #the number of adults on this site who lack the emotional wherewithal to watch an ongoing narrative is. yikes.#queue

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.
