Thanks for saying the bit about butch being identity more than presentation. I'm aware it is, like I'm not dumb, but I never feel like I show the fact that I'm butch enough, even if I'm soft butch. Like wearing androgynous clothes means fuck all in modern day since women's fashion is androgynous at a base line currently, plus I have very long hair and tend to keep my nails somewhat long so my identity doesn't show at all and it makes me constantly feel like I'm appropriating the label. But like if I were cis, I'd probably take testosterone for a bit like she/her Lea did; that idea is super enticing. As is I like being trans because it gives some masculinity to my physicality. If it were the past where women wore dresses, I'd definitely wear men's clothes (probably mixed with some parts of women's stuff). Just modern day doesn't let me visibly defy social norms as much as I want. My leather jacket and boots just isn't enough to show my identity.
Sorry for the ranble. Just made me feel way better, seeing confirmation that it's largely identity. Even if I don't have anyone to truly express it with.
you're welcome!
it was definitely something i had to unlearn; especially now with so much of lesbian bar culture having been pushed out and forgotten, a lot of younger people just.. don't know what these words mean, and when i was their age, butch and lesbian both were Bad Words that you never said at all except to demean someone.
reading older lesbian literature helped me overcome that and learning about all of the people that came before us; both about butches and femmes. digging through archives and putting myself into butch/femme spaces online has been hugely beneficial to me. i used to feel the same & like i could never "claim the label" because i didn't look a certain way, but that's just simply not true.
and this is especially not true for lesbians and other women who are already having other labels forced upon them by society; for not being white, for not being skinny, for not being hyper feminine, for not being cis, etc.
one of the things that made it really click for me was picture archives, specifically these kinds of pictures:
Tumblr media
(pride, nyc, 1977 by meryl meisler)
Tumblr media
this one is nancy tucker & her partner, and the two of them would switch shirts throughout the march. (1970 by kay tobin lahusen)
you can see how similar butches and femmes can look, and this is also what i mean when i say femmes are just as sanitized in popular media. butch and femme can be adjectives, but they are also nouns, they are genders and they are roles that people fill within lesbian relationships and within their community; how they move through the world, interact with society and how they interact with other lesbians and other women romantically and sexually.
this quote is one of my favorites:
“Butch is a trickster gender—and so, in a similar way, is femme. Lesbian gender expressions do not emulate heteropatriarchy, they subvert it. Femme removes femininity from the discursive shadow of masculinity and thereby strips from it any connotation of subordination or inferiority. Butch takes markers of “masculinity” and divests them of their association with maleness or manhood. Butchness works against the gender binary—the masculine/feminine paradigm—and reclaims for women the full breadth of possibilities when it comes to gender expression.”

Conversation
Avengers during quarantine
steve: takes it like a champ, the 40s had absolutely no technology so he’s used to spending long periods of time doing nothing. takes advantage and watches all the movies and shows on his ever growing pop culture list, and upgrading his bike. is required to make infomercials. “remember folks; wash your hands, wear a mask, and social distance.”
tony: helps steve film his infomercials, and gets so pissy when steve doesn’t take his directions that he makes his own. “fine if you won’t do a full fireworks display, i will!” builds yet another array of suits (that aren’t murderous this time), and other completely tricked out gadgets and suits for the team. makes a city out of nats amazon boxes, and lives in it for 3 days before bruce accidentally hulks out and destroys it.
natasha: gets wine drunk and online shops. she’s the sole reason for the amount of amazon and other mail carrier boxes that start to pile up in the garage; you could build a miniature version of half of manhattan with them. buys masks in bulk, but they’re all different kinds. some are plain black, or regular medical grade. others are either weird cartoon mouths or super kawaii glittery sanrio type masks. the type of wine affects the type of mask she orders. bruce ends up hiding her mastercard.
bruce: he knows the severity of the pandemic, and is grateful for the stay at home orders. very big on cleaning constantly and wearing masks. he spends quarantine doing science experiments, and even tries to help find a cure or solution. almost hulks out when the home order is lifted prematurely, and he catches glimpses of the “bar lives matter” protests. spends time relaxing with natasha and tony. despite the obvious stress, its the most relaxed hes been in yrs.
clint: being the family man he is, obviously quarantines at home. he’s happy to have a prolonged break from the team, and more bonding time with his wife and kids. they play video games, make frog shaped bread, and he teaches his kids sign language. by the 4th month of quarantine they’re all almost completely communicating in sign. tony gets mad at him for not inviting him over to make frog bread.
thor: gets stuck at the avengers facility, and it is recommended that he stay on earth so as not to risk spreading to asgard. he sticks to playing fortnite and eating vast amounts of poptarts. he freaks out a little when his stash runs out and is the sole reason why the secret facilitys address gets leaked. makes friends with the grocery delivery person every time, and over tips.
loki: big time germaphobe!!! walks around with a mask and gloves at all times, probably showers several times a day. hoards lysol, wipes, and clorox, and only gives his stash to the others. although peter claims he saw him donating some to a women’s shelter. gets called out on a facebook mom group he was in (trying to keep track of stores with cleaning tings in stock) for hoarding. “sorry you refuse to get up at 5 am to shop jill. i am a god you dull creature, and i will not be bullied by a woman with a jersey duck nail!”
sam: baker affff, he shows up late to a meeting one day with a tray of cinnamon rolls and fury absolutely looses his mind. "HEHE I MADE CINNAMON ROLLS WITH A-" and nick is like "YOU’RE LATE! WE WERE SUPPOSED TO START 2 HOURS AGO! YOU CAN TAKE YOUR CINNAMON ROLLS AND SHOVE THEM RIGHT UP YOUR A-" "I PUT APPLES IN THEM" goes crazy spending most of his time in the kitchen. attempts to make thor poptarts.
bucky: he and steve are literally the kings of quarantine. bucky gets through the pop culture bucket list with steve, and actually tries to bond with his team mates. he falls into a rabbit hole of conspiracy videos (fully believes that paul mcartney died in the 60s, and if her brother didn’t kill her....then jon benet is definitely katy perry) and urban exploration videos and makes a list of places to explore when the stay at home order lifts.
peter: he goes absolutely crazy. he has to resume classes online, he feels stuck in his small room. eventually, may sends him upstate to the avengers facility where he has more freedom to roam around within a safe space. he can be found on facetime with MJ doing homework, or pranking the others with pietro and thor.
wanda: definitely spends time rereading popular series. i’m talking twilight, percy jackson, hunger games, vladimir tod etc. if you read it in middle school, it’s on her shelf. mostly orders through amazon, but as soon as the pandemic dies down a little shes at a book store stocking up. (side-note: shes team edward and definitely wants to be alice for halloween)
pietro: he rarely gets sick, but when he does it’s absolute hell! he panic buys toilet paper, lysol, and bath and body works sanitizers (specifically stress relief, noir, and warm vanilla sugar) he goes with loki to shop and speeds over to the tp and cleaning product aisle to shove things in his basket. he’s the sole reason why they start putting a limit on how much you can purchase. he doesn’t get sick at all, but definitely becomes a hypochondriac by month 2. he forms towers and statutes out of his massive collection of tp and sanitizers, and nick berates him and loki for hoarding.
vision: accesses different stan and fandom databases so he can carry a conversation with wanda about her interests. she's glad to be able to speak with someone other than peter and MJ about these things, cause she lowkey feels like she bothers them. he accidentally downloads a corrupt kpop file and can only speak in black pink and bts songs for a good two weeks till tony helps reboot his system.
nick: if you’re a covidiot, he knows. he has your name, ip, social security, list of allergies etc. and he’s not afraid to tell you he does. starts threatening people on social media under an anonymous account, and becomes very popular on twitter. his “stans” tell him to “dox” people but he doesn’t know what that means. not saying nick fury is anonymous but if the v for vendetta mask fits 👀
coulson: literally lives on tiktok, and becomes THE dad of tiktok. he dances, bakes, does “hey i’m proud of you kiddo” type povs, does tutorials on how to shave, change your oil/tire. he even helps a tiktok creator reclaim their sound from some pervy povs. refuses to tell nick what “dox” means.

Tbh I think fandom’s fixation with canon is frustrating for a number of reasons, but my main beef with it is that the stuff folks assume is canon is actually fanon they’ve personally (and inadvertently) convinced themselves is canon. Which wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t this culture centered around repeatedly (and even aggressively) validating it.
To me, this is frustrating when it comes to how other ppl write/depict these characters because the more universally accepted ideas get more traction than the stuff that bends/subverts/reinterprets canon. And while no one is obligated to write those kind of works, I just feel there’s a kind of pressure around conforming to those popular fanon takes vs. more “controversial” interpretations.
Especially when you consider how many people are vocal about folks who write their supposed “hate” of a character into their fic with the assumption that they’re specifically doing so to uplift their favorite ship. Which imo makes a lot of assumptions about why someone would supposedly write “negative” traits into a character that (presumably) doesn’t have those traits in canon, let alone assuming what the person writing the fic personally sees in that character that others don’t (which is usually based on their personal life experience or their understanding of the world).
Speaking personally, I just don’t see the point of these kinds of arguments, because when it comes to my writing I prefer to be flexible with characterizations in canon. I wouldn’t argue anything I write is “canon compliant” specifically because of this. Sure there might be indications that I’ve read up on canon and studied enough of a character’s voice to duplicate it in fic. But there’s some things I’ll write into a character that others didn’t see, and arguably don’t even like, and that’s valid because we all have different understandings of these characters and why they’re meaningful to us.
I get that much of the >need< to validate personal fanon as canon stems a lot from “antis”/people who see only the negative traits of the character and feel the need to pressure/shame others into not liking the character. But I kinda miss how, back in the day, this sort of behavior wasn’t so commonplace (let alone insular) enough to affect how people engage with media because it resulted in a lot of diverse and interesting fanworks.
This isn’t to say that folks thinking critically about media is bad, but the culture around what people think is “critical thinking” feels counterproductive to creating a community that encourages diverse fanworks regardless of how problematic, controversial, or subversive said fanworks are. Like, we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, but I feel that in a lot of ways that’s what goes on regularly because someone with a modicum of a following and issues with how ppl engage with media has enough sway in the community to pressure people this way.
And as much those people gripe about the more ~problematic~ stuff (and the “this representation doesn’t agree with my headcanon” crowd) I feel that as a result of all of this crap, it’s sanitized how people engage with the media (whether it’s coming up with safe headcanons or creating fanon-compliant works).
Again, this isn’t to say this is bad or that people >need< to create diverse or “controversial” content, but rather this sort of stuff tends to discourage others who have interesting perspectives on canon that aren’t fanon and are not canon-compliant from participating in fandom in ways that diversifies the fanworks that get posted online.
(Note: when I say “controversial” it can mean anything between the most squicky content you can possibly imagine [that isn’t necessarily triggering, but it can be] or someone writing negative traits into a character that others don’t agree with. Or otherwise just generally writing them “OOC” which, again, comes with a lot of assumptions about why someone would do that. Though also positions the person making said accusation the supposed “expert” with the most authority and understanding of the character. Which is not only pretty arrogant, but also just plain disrespectful and just completely undermines [or misunderstands] why people create fanworks in the first place.)

Guest Post: Denny Lee – Bassist for ‘The R Train’
Tumblr media
Sometimes even the most carefully prepared plans bring wonderful surprises where everything goes better than you ever hoped for. Then, unexpectedly, a stranger walks in the door and hears what you’re doing, loves it, and almost immediately becomes an important part of your life… and your plan! Then, no matter how hard you work to execute your plan perfectly to achieve the specific goals your plan was designed to achieve, that mischievous Yin just has to show up with the timing of a well syncopated Rock Groove to step on and disrupt all the beautiful Yang you’ve developed in the past couple years. Well… that’s Rock & Roll, especially for this hard-working Rock & Roll Band!
For ‘The R Train’ our plans are laid out like a set of high-speed bullet train rails that never end. We encounter the usual and sometimes unusual challenges and difficulties that can make life difficult, or better yet make interesting material for new songs! Our commitment to bring great, groove-oriented, classic-influenced rock music with some Punk attitude and positive messages through huge grooves, soaring vocal lines and harmonies to every music listener is paramount to everything we do!
The reality is we are still a “new” Rock & Roll Band. ‘The R Train’ as a group will be just two years old on our next birthday. But that fact is very misleading! As with many great Rock & Roll Bands that came before us, each of the three musicians that make up ‘The R Train’ have played for and with many of the great Rock Players of our time, individually accumulating hundreds of hours of experience on the concert stage, in the studios, and even in some local pubs and casuals simply because we all love to play great Rock & Roll music.
So… when we carefully crafted our rehearsal schedule to prepare for our first “show” ever, we set definitive goals for the hours we would dedicate perfecting every aspect of the show, knowing that we personally would not be happy or satisfied with anything less than as close to perfection as we could possibly achieve. Then, just as we start to feel a little comfortable, Yin comes knocking again! This time in the form of a World-Wide Pandemic that forces almost everyone to stay at home, locked down for their own protection!
youtube
Well, being committed to not letting something we can’t even see stop us, we tried to rehearse using the various on-line/internet conferencing platforms that allows groups of people to meet, see each other and talk using their computers. Well… that didn’t work! There’s a technical issue when trying to play, sing or even just clap your hands together when using one of these popular programs. A little but significant hurdle that cannot be overcome called “latency”! It seems that while using these programs, when you get two or more people to try to clap their hands together in rhythm it’s never going to be in rhythm! “Latency,” or the difference in time it takes the signal to get to and from each computer, causes the clapping (or any attempt to do something “together” and in rhythm) to be out of sync, sounding like a flock of geese trying to play along with the USC Trojan Marching Band! Nope! Just does not work!
But we are ‘The R Train’! And you can’t just stop a train once it starts rolling! So, we improvised! And yes, vocal rehearsals went forward with some clever problem solving.
Finally, after a couple months, we get the needed approvals to commence rehearsing in a proper fashion following all the new rules of social distancing, wearing masks, bathing in hand sanitizer, and the new way of life we are all faced with. But we got right back in the groove quickly, now focusing our energies on being a premier POWER TRIO with great vocals, a huge sound and absolutely killer grooves! Now we’re Rocking!
Remember, we have a plan… right? We are going to be properly rehearsed and absolutely ready for our first show, some time many months from now. Right? Then… the phone rings, and wouldn’t you know it, the voices on the other end of the line are important music industry people from New York that can really help us along with achieving our goals. They say something to the effect of; “Hey guys, we love your first single! We’re producing a live show coming up in a couple weeks that will be steamed on all the major platforms. We want you there! You will be perfect! Here’s the deal!”
Oh, No! I mean, No! I mean, Don’t say NO! We are ‘The R Train’! We Can Do This!
So… with less than two weeks to iron out the music for the short 30-minute set, develop an energetic show, plan the costuming, and work out all the technical aspects of not only playing the show live, but streaming that concert live to the World… Jeffrey immediately spoke up and said it best… “Oh man, what shirt and jacket should I wear?”
For the next twelve days we gird our loins and got ready to unveil ‘The R Train’ to the World! We polished the songs, practiced some show banter, went clothes shopping, and brought in one of the best engineers around to make sure ‘The R Train’ and our music made the best impression possible on all the people that were getting their first taste of ‘The R Train’ Band and our particular brand of Fun Rock & Roll! Even though we’ve each played many, many concerts, for some reason we were all nervous! Excited! But nervous!
Fortunately, that didn’t last long. As soon as we got a few bars into the first song we were Rocking in high gear! The energy level that we delivered was exhilarating! By the third song I (Denny on Bass) jumped into Jeffrey’s lane as he started to burn up the neck of his Mustang guitar with a screaming solo, and the house was Rocking! Hard!
Mike (Our Gonzo Drummer) and I laid out one burning groove after another and Jeffrey delivered a series of soaring vocals and burning lead solos! This, ‘The R Trains’ very first gig, turned out to be our “Coming Out Party,” as each of us bonded together and delivered a Rock & Roll Show that surpassed even the wildest expectations of everyone that attended or watched via the Internet. The response was over-whelming!
This, ‘The R Trains’ first show, was very unique. It was our first show, done perhaps six months earlier than originally planned.  It was special not only because it was the first show, but because we delivered a Big Time Show worthy of any legacy Rock & Roll Venue Stage! It will always be very special to us, as we not only had great fun, but on that night we became ‘The R Train’… Live and In Concert! ‘The R Train’ became the band for the people. Playing great Rock & Roll for all music lovers!
We are ‘The R Train’!  We love to play great, fun Rock & Roll music that everyone can enjoy! Thundering Grooves! Soaring vocals! Searing guitars! Positive Messages! Great Rock & Roll for Everyone!

How Many Completely different Genres Of Popular Music Are There? No. You are Flawed.
Genres in music are like branches of a tree. This can be a superb thing, culturally talking. The national music scene has never been this diverse. Too typically, particularly in rock's heyday, http://www.audio-transcoder.com/ it was dominated by acts that made their bones from taking nonwhite music and sanitizing it for white audiences. That custom undoubtedly lives on, in musicians like Justin Bieber, but the pop charts and critics' notebooks precisely replicate the American mosaic in a manner that they actually haven't earlier than. We could also be in the midst of a big leap backward as a rustic, but at least the music is good. Even the country charts are fairly woke.
Tumblr media
Music Genre Classification is without doubt one of the many branches of Music Information Retrieval From here you can carry out different duties on musical data like beat monitoring, music generation, recommender methods, track separation and instrument recognition etc. Music evaluation is a various discipline and also an attention-grabbing one. A music session someway represents a second for the person. Discovering these moments and describing them is an interesting challenge within the subject of Information Science. Every technology seems to offer the subsequent one crap for its music. (See what I did there?) I teased my dad and mom about their disco till at some point all my Green Day and Good Charlotte sounded dated in my headphones. Previous people" used to inform us children that our songs have been a mirrored image of our disintegrating values, that music was worse than it was once. Positive, they missed their Elvis and their Bee Gees, however they also missed the days once we appreciated good morals. The lyrics we mouthed, the artists we worshipped, the genres we bumped were all proof of society sliding into the sewer.
Maybe unsurprisingly, Kenny finds that accidents - including car crashes and drug overdoses - are a huge reason for premature death for musicians, accounting for nearly 20 percent of all deaths throughout genres. But accidents are much more likely to kill rock, metal and punk musicians. Punk and metal musicians additionally appear prone to suicide, whereas gospel musicians had the lowest suicide charge of all genres. Homicide accounted for 6 % of deaths, however was the reason for dying for an unimaginable half of rap and hip hop musicians in Kenny's pattern. Overall, I think this project was an effective way for me to department out of the musical genres I most resonate with, and to teach myself on the history of different musical genres. In hindsight, I would have loved to include a bit and even dedicate a complete undertaking in direction of discovering the extent to which sexually explicit or violent content inside songs affect a person. This thought occurred to me once I finished a class on the College of Rhode Island which lined intercourse and violence within the media. It will have been interesting to compare the lyrics of recent songs the lyrics of older genres and see in the event that they correlate. I additionally wished to reflect on the part in my poster that includes responses to the query: what impression does music have on society". There wasn't one participant who had anything adverse to say about music, which helped me to appreciate simply how vital it has and will at all times be. Let's return to the question of Ambient vs. New Age music. In their lighter", commercialized form, well known for the reason that '80s, these may be some gently flowing, predictable pieces of music, typically utilizing just a few fundamental chords, inspiring melodies and easy, most likely synth - based instrumentation, with frequent use of piano and strings (or string-like synth pads), maybe some arpeggiated synth elements. However, in the late '60s, pioneers of digital music were already engaged on a compositionally and aesthetically a lot deeper degree to create Ambient items (and New Age music later within the '70s). The 2 albums generally credited with laying down the style's sonic and conceptual framework have been Chuck Individual's 2010 LP Eccojams Vol. 1 (a Daniel Lopatin , aka Oneohtrix Point By no means, facet project) and Far Side Virtual (2011) by James Ferraro. Whereas Lopatin sampled from Eighties pop songs and fused them with the 1992 online game Ecco the Dolphin, Ferraro aimed for ringtone music" by sampling issues like the Skype log-in sound and being inspired by Brian Eno-composed Home windows ninety five tone, although his music usually may sound like Philip Glass or even the experimental digital music of Laurie Anderson. Whereas its day has come and gone, these two Vaporwave artists and others like Vektroid—whose album Flortal Shoppe beneath the Macintosh Plus moniker is perhaps the genre's defining document—are still making and releasing new music. This compendium of differences between the cultures of jazz and classical musicians is a supply of ever-rising fascination to me. I used to feel pissed off when a violinist couldn't play a groove, or when a jazz pianist froze up in front of a written passage. However actually these are simply manifestations of variations in brain structure, variations in coaching, and finally differences in culture. When you incorporate individuals with such variations into your music in an adroit manner, you may—as a substitute of shedding one thing—augment your sources to create an art that's tremendously multifaceted and rich, that celebrates and even thrives on difference. Mr. SINNETT: With jazz? You understand, it is fascinating as a result of I used to be a musician, truly, once I first heard jazz, and once I first heard jazz - I wasn't enjoying jazz, I used to be playing traditional soul music and rock and funk and those sort of things, however after I first heard jazz, I actually did not get it because it was the whole antithesis of every thing I used to be playing at that second. In different words, you had - I was coping with music that you just had quite simple, repetitive rhythmic devises in the music. It was primarily based on a groove, a specific sort groove. The concord we had been coping with was at a much decrease level in terms of complexity and it was primarily vocal.
Tumblr media
For these of you who assume that heavy metallic consists of the singer screaming as loud as they can, the guitarist playing the guitar as quick as they will, and the drummer banging on the drums as loud as they will, just take a moment to suppose: would it not ACTUALLY be that widespread if it was simply so simple as that? Strive listening to any heavy metal song. You may be pleasantly shocked, I promise you. The lyrics have a much deeper meaning than virtually every other style of music, and don't let the way some bands current themselves off the stage put you off. I do not prefer it when bands gown up in all-black and wear black make-up and all that stuff both, but attempt to just think about the music. There's much more to it than you suppose there is.

Preventing  Stylometry
===Preventing  Stylometry=== Non-profit and free for redistribution Written on September 6th | 2018 Published on February 3rd | 2019 For entertainment and research purposes only
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===DISCLAIMER=== The Paranoid's Bible and its writers hold no responsibility for the acts of others. The Paranoid’s Bible is for research and entertainment purposes only. Please visit our blog for more PDFs and information: http://www.paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Preface=== Before  stylometry was weaponized by the ABCs it had a practical application of analyzing texts for authenticity, the identity of an another among other things. The basics were originally done by Wincenty Lutoslawski, a Polish philosopher who was known for using his method to build a chronology of Plato’s dialogues. Wincenty wouldn’t have dreamed of stylometry going as far as it has, especially with the development of computers and their near limitless potential when it comes to their capacities for analyzing large quantities of data. Computers, with their excellent capacity for analysis, have changed the game when it comes to profiling an individual and gather what information on them that you can find. This means that at any given moment, everything you say or do online will most positively be catalogued in some black-box server in the backroom of your ISP or at a data-center in Utah where the government can shift and read over at their leisure. You’re simply another bit of data put into a dossier and placed in yet another category the government has decided to use to classify you and many others. This doesn’t mean you should give up hope for any form of privacy, however you should be aware of what you may leak on your journeys through the internet. While our other guides helped you removed or masked your data, this guide will help you remove an entire focal point that many people use to identify an individual. So, please, take your time and read through this carefully. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Why You Should be Worried=== Everything we say and do is of our own style, regardless of what it is and how we do it. Everyone has their own style and tells which can be passed onto anything and everything they do, not just prose and art. Coding can actually even give way to who did what and when, especially when debugging symbols are removed and the usual binary obfuscation techniques are used. Anonymity can’t happen, even when all the usual steps are taken, if you don’t work on knocking down your stylometry points and marks. Artistic feats, coding, writing and even speech can tell a lot about a person, especially the more seasoned they are in their chosen profession and/or hobby. Everyone generates their own style in life when it comes to things, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that the more experienced someone is that it’s much easier to tell them apart from someone else. It’s because of this that anything encountered in the wild can be used by anyone (not just the government) to learn who made it. We can learn the individual’s stylistic fingerprint from things like how they use a word or punctuation mark to something like brush strokes or use of shading. This can be used when there’s a pool of candidates, and with some decent sleuthing, deduce who made whatever it is we’re looking at. There are also programs that exist to help this endeavor, and the government isn’t the only one with access to them. If you know where to look, and have some cash to spare, you can gain access to programs that can pinpoint an item’s creator to a frightening 90%+ accuracy. This is only solidified when more information is out there, on the internet, ready for anyone to access freely. Public availability and familiarity is the enemy of privacy and anonymity. We must learn to limit ourselves and control our impulses to further prevent the hemorrhaging of information. One way to do this is to expand our own working knowledge of any chosen subject or action we participate in. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===The Basics=== > Brush up on your English spelling > Brush up on your English Grammar > Learn to spot the tells of others (over use of words, punctuation, emoticons/smilies, slang...etc) > Learn the slang and emoticons/smilies of other languages >Take a creative writing class or two (or get some literature on the subject) > Remember these stereotypes that people believe: -Men are wordy and women use emoticons. -The younger a person, the more likely they'll use slang/chatspeak or make mistakes. -With some variations and examples you've seen, you'll be able to make adjustments to fit any persona/character. > Commit this rule to memory and practice it: For every post I do, I'll do three of fluff (useless info or static AKA meme posting or just random crap). Every week, depending on frequency of post, I'll try to remove at least two to five posts before I post more. > If it isn't of importance or is needed, don't post it or at the very least remove it ASAP. > Check into Anonymouth - https://github.com/psal/anonymouth (Note: Read the README as it contains the how-to for installation and use) > Check and follow the below guides - https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/post/160173700334/the-paranoids-bible-20 - https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/post/156023846549/opsec - https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/post/162576936634/uncle-daddys-big-book-of-deception-20 - https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/post/156265781035/meta-data-and-you - https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/post/161992121844/the-master-opt-out-list-20 - https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/post/160430134369/day-to-day-invasions-of-privacy-20 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Disguising the way you Type=== Now the main thing here is to learn about your own writing style and its key attributes that identify you. This is usually done through comparing the frequency of words, punctuation marks, and identifiers (slang, sayings…etc). This is compared against a pool of data (AKA your posts and various actions online) that is accredited (supposedly) to you and only you. So going by this information we then must assume that there are steps to be taken to sanitize our prose. The most useful form of sanitation is a simple grasp of the English language. This means knowing proper spelling and grammar, and avoiding region specific spelling, among other things like the over use of slang, memes, and shorthand (Chat speak…etc). The above combined with the below should hopefully help you and many others prevent stylometry (especially when combined with Anonymouth). ---Catting (AKA Being a Copy Cat): --- While many will be upset that we mention this tactic, it is one of the most common way to blend in or mask your own linguistic print. It relies heavily on knowing the basics of the English language an your ability to recognize patterns. It's a lot easier than what it sounds like, however we urge you to never use this tactic other than for private practice. You first begin by getting 10 to 20 samples of a person's postings online, usually varied from the oldest possible piece to miscellaneous examples to the latest. From there, you read and study the text you gained from your target. Now once you've read it several times and made note of how they use punctuation, capitalization, and any slang or common words (for them)... you can add and subtract until you have a paragraph that sounds exactly like something they'd say or do. Once you've repeated this a few times, try and make one on your own and see if it fits. Once you've got this down pat you can start down the tactics below, yet we must urge you never to do this tactic in public or use it as your main option as it puts other people and their information in jeopardy. We do not want other people in trouble in our stead, we simply use this tactic (in private/never posted online) to get familiar with how others copy and rip off the posting styles of others. It also allows us to get used to modifying our own prose. ---Sampling: --- Similar to catting, sampling requires an individual to pick 5 to 10 targets instead of one and using their samples to construct a whole new writing style. It's quite simple and relies on you following the same procedure as catting. Once you finish with one sample you put it aside and repeat till you have all your samples put together. Once you've all your samples done, you start taking them apart and putting them together to create a new writing style. This style is so removed from your original samples that it won't be tracked back to anyone and ensures you've a totally new and semi-original writing style to use throughout your internet shenanigans. ---Slav King: --- (Note this is similar to what Rao and Rohatgi 2000 suggested AKA round-trip machine translation) Taking the basics of the English language, you construct whatever you wish to say and then use a service like Google Translate and have it translated to another language. Once that is done, you translate it once more to another language and then back to English. With minor "fixes," you'll be able to create a style of posting that reads as if it was written by a non-native English speaker. ---Aging (Up or Down): --- Surfing profiles for a specific age group and practicing sampling, an individual can feign not only their gender but also their age. This is a popular technique used by sexual predators to befriend and gain further information on a target, however if used correctly an individual can use this technique to mask their identity even further and help prevent people from guessing information correctly. ---Subbing (Also known as embedding or culture-theft):--- This tactic is usually referred to as a “troll tactic” but is quite useful in actuality when it comes to disguising the way you type. The simplest explanation of what must be done is thus: You locate a forum, chat or site for a sub-culture or a hobby and simply lurk or “sit in” (E.G: Signing up and just reading/listening in on things). You get a basic grasp of slang and cultural sayings to the point of “fitting in” and being able to do so without being called out on it. You then use what you learn to simply create a new style of typing (that is similar to that of the sub-culture/hobby’s main core group) to be used elsewhere. Sort of like how people would use slang and common sayings to denote what group/fandom they’re a part of, like Train hobbyists or Punks. You can disguise yourself and how you type quite a bit by simply mimicking and borrowing from various groups. ---The Cult (Also known as the group, the following or Legion):--- Simply put a group of people, usually larger than two individuals, use one or more of the above tactics to form their own typing style. From there, they work on combing/meshing together these styles to form one typing style which they all then follow. This tactic was taken from the Chinese activists who’re constantly fighting their current government’s corruption. Due to how anti-privacy China has become, the activists developed this tactic to hide how many people are within a group posting online especially if it’s just one individual trying to create subterfuge to confuse anyone trying to track them down. One other variation of this tactic that we’ll bring up simply has everyone agreeing upon copying (catting) an individual from the group and posting in that style for anything concerning that group or its activities. ===Note:=== Be aware of regional and cultural differences. This includes but is not limited to spelling, slang, sayings and similar items. Try to make a conscious effort to recognize these tells with not only the things you do or say but also what others do or say. This can help you expand your privacy and security, yet also make you realize just how much we, ourselves, can bleed out onto the internet. ===Note 2:===: The above are just basic examples sent to us by our activist friends, you can find more tactics to contribute through heavy searching or by experimenting and coming up with your own. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Combining what you’ve Learned=== So, with everything you’ve learned above, and with some conscious effort on your part plus a bit of creativity you’ll be able to disguise yourself quite well online especially if combined with other skills that we’ve showed you on the PB’s guides. Now the first thing we must do is conduct our own bit of stylometry on ourselves. This can be done through either the use of your favorite word processor or through Anonymouth. We’ll discuss the basics below on how you can do a dirty-version of stylometry. We recommend doing it both through a word processor and then anonymouth just to cover your bases. Check this link before proceeding as it is required reading to understand the basics: http://peterkirby.com/basic-stylometry-101.html ===Note:=== This is jumping the gun a bit however before we start constructing new typing styles, we need to learn some basics concerning Stylometry. ---The Basics of Stylometry Summed up--- -Pick a candidate (This will be yourself). -Pick a sample size (usually done in multiples of 500 words, ergo 1000; 1500; 2000…etc). -Pick a randomized variety of confirmed examples (Posts, comments from a confirmed source/target E.G: you). -Pick features/identifiers (Words, punctuation marks, slang, misspelled or improperly used words or marks…etc). -Learn how many times a feature (a word, punctuation mark, slang…etc) is used. -Calculate the mean by summing up your numbers (your features x how many times they appear in samples) and then divide by the number of samples. -Compare your newly formed typing style(s) by making a few test paragraphs and checking them against the above. - See which one is closest to your actual style VS the one that isn’t. Your main goal is to try and create one completely unique and least likely to be identified as being your own style. Now that you have a gist of how to identify, to an extent, your own identifiable markers—it’s time to check into Anonymouth. The reading material that comes with it should be enough to explain how to set it up and how to use it. Once you figured that out, use it in conjunction with the above basics. This will be a bit of an extra (hard) step but it’ll help you in the long run. First and foremost, you must think ahead. What is this new style for? Is it to run accounts, create prose, add an extra layer of protection or is it just to sprinkle more red herrings? Once you figure that out, you can use what you’ve learned from the other guides to build up a persona and personality that’ll be represented within your new typing style. Two, prepare what you plan to write. Think ahead and think carefully. Write it out in a word processor and then copy + paste it into something like a .txt file to remove traces and extra, frivolous additions like stylizations or fonts. Three, use sentence enhancers. These can be anything from simple quirks like using words incorrectly to Thesaurusitis or even regional spelling or slang. Below shall be a few examples. You can get an idea of what we mean, thus making up your own enhancers besides ours. 3.a: Thesaurusitist:  Go to https://www.thesaurus.com/ or break out your own and look for a synonym to use. So instead of using murder, you can say annihilated (Example: Instead of “The communists murdered the wealthy” you can say they “annihilated the wealthy”). Switching words out like this can help create the illusion of pseudo-intellectualism or even actual intelligence. It all depends on how you hash it out. Have fun, go wild. You can end up creating a whole new series of marks/features/identifiers that’ll drive any CIA spook or government shill into confusion and depression. 3.b: Regional Illusion: This one takes a bit of time and research, and is usually partnered with creating a text file with information but it is useful if you want to throw people off from where you’re from or trying to appear from. An example of a text file would be something like (word) + (Region) = (Description of use). With that in hand, you’ll be able to throw one or more items into the mix to screw around with regional associations or educated guesses on location. Some links below to get you started… https://www.rd.com/culture/regional-slang/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_English_regional_vocabulary https://www.thedailymeal.com/entertain/weirdest-regional-slang-america-slideshow 3.c: Fuck You: Literally just adding swears/curses into the mix. Believe it or not quite a few people got caught by the ABCs because of their filthy mouths. Keep that in mind from now on ;^) 3.e: The Queens English: Depending where you’re from or who you’ve talked to, you may notice how certain areas spell words differently in English. Keep this mind, especially if you’re trying throw people off about your continent of origin. 3.f: Dropping Breadcrumbs: The purpose of this enhancer is to give up (false) personal details as if you’re unaware or too used to doing so, which is a big no-no if you’re trying to keep private. An example would be something like: “OMFG! I cant even right now!!1 Its already 1AM! >0.0<” Note the use of time and some enhancers like smilies and chatspeak. Something like the above, in the wild, will be contributed to either an immature person who’s young or female (or a part of certain sub-cultures). 3.g: Weeb it up: Everyone has a past they wish to forget or know someone who has had such a past when it comes to anime and the stereotypical fan behavior, like the overuse of emoticons/smilies. Break that forbidden knowledge out of the safe because it can be useful for sprinkling on herrings.  Be it a replacement for actual punctuation or simply throwing it in midsentence or at end, they do help express what you mean and hide your age and gender. Check the below links for some examples you can save to a text file and use when the need comes up. https://fsymbols.com/emoticons/ http://japaneseemoticons.me/ 3.h: Origin Unknown: Another decent enhancer is replacing the English equivalent of a word with a similar one from another language. The most common examples are using Japanese or Spanish words in place of the English one. Keep it simple and only use a few at a time. You can throw a lot of people off if you use proverbs or sayings from another language to try and convey something else like comparing situations (Think back to pseudo-intellectual who kept quoting Chinese proverbs after a trip there). Four, choose your tactic(s). One is good, two is better, three or more is best. The basic pattern is usually three to four tactics. Something akin to Catting > Sampling > (Third tactic) > Slav King. From there, checking your new sample against the basics + anonymouth, you should have a totally unique and totally new style for posting online. Keep a sample or two around to constantly check against your usually style + any new ones you create in order to prevent any cross contamination or back-checking. Now combine it all and produce your new posting style(s). That’s it, basically. It’ll be time consuming and requires a bit of practice but it’ll go far once you realize how hard it is for someone, especially a Glow in the Dark to track you down through text. Remember, a stylometrist used by the government will have more tools and toys than us or most anyone. Working on obscuring our marks/tells and styles with the above will, to an extent, help use randomize our posts. Doing this each and every time, keeping nothing uniformed unless working with false leads and red herrings… you should retain your anonymity at least through text. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Afterword=== While we’re borrowing heavily from our Chinese contacts, we were able to add some information contributed to us by our Venezuelan and American counterparts. We recommend you take what you’ve read above and work on making up your own tactics and enhancers. Share them with whoever you can and work on polluting as much information as possible to foil any wannabe stylometrist’s attempt at demasking people from anonymity. Privacy isn’t a one and done thing. It requires a lot of patience, time and research. So, take what you can glean from the above and try to find something that’ll work for you.

5.
Management of COVId 19 with the active participation of eminent, experienced AYUSH practitioners
CORONA affected cases may be categorised and managed as follows :
A. General population management for prevention (already covered in Stage 1 &2
B. Quarantined Peoples Not tested positive,
1. High Risk – These patients should be treated by medicines already described in Part 1 & 2 with proper pathyapathya.
High risk groups patients suffering from co-morbidities should be treated for these problems
Rasayana drugs for challenged organs
2. Low Risk Group – (PREVENTIVE CARE) – use of Sudarshan Ghana Vati, ShanshamaniVati, NaradiyaLaxmi Vilas Rasa<tribhuvanKirti Rasa. Shilajeet , abhrak bhasma, vishana bhasma, 64 prahari pippal, pipplyasava, amrit bhallaka can be used if required
C. Tested positive,
1. Asymptomatic –
2. Mildly Symptomatic – (CLINICAL CARE),
3. Tested Positive: Full blown but no serious complications – (SUPPORTIVE CARE) can be managed in modern hospitals as an add on therapy
4. Full blown disease with complications –these patients should be treated under the supervision of ICU staff only. Proper rejuvenation of the active patients of CVD 19 as their vital organs have been challenged and become susceptible to various diseases in future.
D. Recovery Phase:
1. Tested Negative – After recovery as per modern diagnostic tools which means the swab culture test negative with recovering of major respiratory symptoms the patients may be categorised by Doctors as cured should be followed for at least 45 days and provided Rasayana therapy and organ specific Rasayana so that the organs specially lungs recover fully and patient does not relapses as is happening in China.
2. Residual disabilities and dysfunctions
3.  Prevention of recurrence in recovered cases with emphasis on lifestyle, food habits, exercise and yoga for building up immunity. Rasayan therapy for revitalization of organs(REHABILITATIVE CARE).
Emphasis on general immunity to fight any communicable or even non-communicable disease in any way is necessary as a long term measure. These have to be followed strictly to avoid recurrence in disease-free cases
Clinical classification based on presentation of symptoms is more important because some patients present with gastrointestinal symptoms, some with upper respiratory symptoms and some with lower respiratory symptoms, some also have skin eruptions, myalgia and arthralgia
6.
To train the ayurveda fraternity for fighting the “Janpadodhvasa” by classical measures to prevent the Jala, Vayu, Desha and Kala Dushti
Lot of  knowledge and understanding regarding the process of Janapadodhwnsa is available for which Ayurvedic graduates should be trained vigorously. Most of these regimens are common for all endemics, epidemic and pandemics hence students for these measures should be trained. They should be trained to follow :
a. Nidanaparivarjan – Preventive measure – personal, social global
b. Apakarshan – General and disease specific
c. Prakriti Vighata – Use of Rasayana to make the target organ more resistant to onslaught of disease
7.
Conducting research projects under proper protocols with ethical and legal clearance
Common cough (Kasa)
Common cough with fever
Common cough with nasal discharge
Cough with cold and low grade fever with allergic rhinitis
N Corona 19
Sashlema kasa
With angamarda
Productive cough
With low grade fever and kasa Productive cough
With low grade fever  Nasal discharge and cough
cough and severe running nose    itching with low grade fever
Anosmia, tonsillitis, sore throat
Fever
Cough
shortness of breath.
sputum production
Headache
Myalgia/ Arthralgia
Diarrhoea
abdominal pain
disease may progress to pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and death.
Integrative considerations during the COVID-19 pandemic
Diagnosing COVID19 affected patients in Ayurvedic perspective is an expert’s job. Ayurveda emphasizes on holistic approach with equal or even more consideration of the host, i.e. the patient. The Agni (digestive power), the bodily strength, the mental strength play an important role in the recovery of patients.
Janapadodhwansa(Pollution particularly of atmosphere causing single disease to all), Sankramaka diseases(spreading from person to person), Agantuja jwara, Vatakaphaja jwara, Sannipatika jwara are few conditions described in the texts match to certain extent in these cases.
Though Ayurvedic treatment is personalised, some protocols can be decided with probable Ayurvedic diagnosis based on above mentioned conditions.
In addition, Diet regimen has to be followed as per Ayurvedic principles.
Even while following conventional treatment, Ayurvedic diet regimen should be followed, along with Yoga practices for combating stress and depression.
In short, Ayurvedic practitioners should actively participate in the treatment of COVID 19 infected patients.

A GUIDE TO NITRILE GLOVES AND WHEN TO WEAR THEM
Nitrile gloves are necessary for many workplaces across various industries. They can protect employees from harmful pathogens, punctures or ensure the safe handling of customer goods. While nitrile gloves are ideal in many situations, they’re not the correct choice for all workplaces. As you select the best gloves for your business, you’ll need to consider the importance of hygiene and the potential hazards your employees might face at work.
What to Consider When Choosing Gloves
Government entities typically regulate disposable surgical and exam-grade gloves to ensure employee and customer safety and dependability. Check to see if your personal protective equipment (PPE) supplier has these gloves in stock and if they are appropriate for your industry before purchasing.
Healthcare Industry
Medical gloves are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Class I medical devices, which require a 510(k) premarket notification to show the FDA that the product is safe and effective. The FDA guidelines define specific criteria relative to medical gloves, such as resistance against leaks and tears. Also, medical gloves need to be powder-free. FDA approval is required for disposable gloves intended for patient care.
Foodservice Industry
The FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) regulates gloves for food service. Since gloves not used for food preparation are medical devices, they are not subject to FDA’s 510(k) premarket notification. In no way should foodservice gloves be labeled for medical purposes. The National Sanitation Foundation also has a document called P155: Disposable Food Contact Gloves that outlines the regulation of food service gloves, including performance criteria such as barrier resistance and sanitation during food preparation and service.
Cleaning Industry
As per the FDA, gloves used for regular cleaning in medical facilities are not regulated. However, gloves for cleaning patients, cleaning surfaces, or handling items contaminated with blood and other fluids are considered medical gloves. These gloves must meet the standards for examination gloves. Choose durable, chemically resistant gloves designed for high-risk tasks if your employees are frequently exposed to harsh chemicals or waste.
OSHA Regulations
To protect employees from injuries and burns, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires all employees to wear gloves relative to the tasks performed, conditions, and potential hazards. Employees need gloves when coming into contact with blood, potentially infectious materials, contaminated objects, or surfaces. They also need gloves if exposed to risks such as severe cuts, punctures, and harmful substances.
Businesses must prioritize employees’ health and safety. The employer is responsible for providing gloves appropriate to the task and training employees on how to use them. In accordance with OSHA’s PPE guide, employees need to attend training classes to learn how to wear, remove, and maintain gloves, along with how to replace damaged or worn ones.
Nitrile Gloves and When to Wear Them
The chemical resistance and durability of nitrile gloves make them ideal for many workplaces. These latex-free gloves are a good alternative for people who need to work with chemicals or other hazardous materials but have a latex allergy. Disposable nitrile gloves have high puncture resistance, provide modest pathogen protection, and eliminate the risk of latex allergies.
While nitrile gloves lack the elasticity of latex, they are still comfortable for workers to wear and sometimes even come with a textured surface designed to improve the user’s grip. Good resistance to oil, chemicals, and other solvents makes nitrile gloves popular among healthcare and lab workers.
Those working in the mechanical industry will also find nitrile gloves a useful form of protection. The abrasion resistance of nitrile means that gloves made from this material are not easily punctured by sharp objects, protecting the wearer from cuts, bruises, and punctures.
Nitrile-Vinyl Gloves
Nitrile-vinyl gloves offer the best properties of both nitrile and vinyl in a unique blend. While nitrile is a resilient material that protects against chemicals, vinyl is soft, flexible, and lighter—combining vinyl with nitrile results in a hybrid glove that offers some protection against punctures while remaining lightweight and breathable. Nitrile-vinyl gloves are a great option for those looking to save some money without sacrificing quality.
Alternatives to Nitrile Gloves
If nitrile gloves don’t seem to align with the needs of your profession, you’ll want to educate yourself on some of the alternatives to nitrile gloves so you can select the proper PPE for your employees.
Latex Gloves
Latex gloves have been widely used in medical settings for many decades, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, to protect against bloodborne diseases such as HIV. The flexibility, protection, comfort, and durability of latex gloves make them ideal for most areas outside of a clinical setting as well, such as food preparation and salons. Also, they can withstand tearing and are much more puncture-resistant than other gloves, limiting the number of times you have to change gloves while on the job.
Latex gloves can be purchased in powdered and non-powdered varieties. The powder prevents skin irritation and stops the gloves from clinging to your hands. Powder-free gloves leave no residue on your hands and equipment, which makes them better suited to food handling or lab work.
The downside of latex gloves is that many people are allergic to them or develop a latex allergy after long-term exposure to the material. Approximately 8-17% of healthcare providers in the United States who use latex gloves have allergic reactions to them. Children undergoing regular medical treatments are considered high-risk groups for latex allergies due to frequent exposure to latex from medical procedures. Chemicals in latex gloves can cause itching and hives on your hands, along with respiratory problems such as itchiness and difficulty breathing. Nitrile gloves are a good alternative to latex because they’re not made from natural rubber, which means that people with latex allergies can wear them without problems and protect themselves and their patients.
Vinyl Gloves
Due to their entirely synthetic composition, vinyl gloves are suitable for tasks requiring some protection and a low risk of chemical exposure. These latex-free gloves are safe for handling non-hazardous materials like household cleaners or food.
Since vinyl gloves are less resilient than nitrile and latex gloves, they are more prone to punctures. They typically have low levels of protection because any amount of stretching to the glove compromises its protective barriers. The loose fit and thinness of these gloves make them inappropriate for tasks that require intricate work or contact with potential hazards.
Choose the Right Gloves for Your Industry
Whether you and your employees need to protect yourselves from sharp objects, bodily fluids, or chemicals, the right gloves are critical to your safety. Nitrile gloves are the best choice for chemical and puncture protection, but depending on your line of work, you may find alternatives like vinyl or latex are better suited to your needs.
ICU Production Inc. offers gloves to suit nearly every industry. Our CDC and FDA-approved gloves ensure convenience and protection for your employees. Request a PPE quote through our online form to get started.
FAQs
What is the shelf life of nitrile gloves?
The shelf life of nitrile gloves ranges from roughly 3-5 years. To make your nitrile gloves last as long as possible, keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
What are some signs of degradation with gloves?
Signs of degradation include gloves that lose their elasticity, become brittle, and fail to return to their original form after being stretched. A change in glove color is also a red flag. Do not use gloves that show signs of degradation.
Is it safe to reuse disposable gloves during the COVID-19 pandemic?
The FDA recommends that gloves not be reused, but there are ways to conserve your supply of disposable gloves. If your supply of gloves is running low or you’re in a crisis situation, then it is okay to extend the use of your gloves on non-infectious patients. If the glove becomes damaged, contaminated, or no longer has a liquid barrier, then you need to dispose of it.

Homebrewing Low-Calorie Beer for Summer
Tumblr media
With warmer weather come longer days, and cravings for lighter drinks, especially for outdoor activities like barbecues, beach days, and sporting events. Those looking for something to sip on during a day-long occasion may reach for something lighter in both flavor and calories. For homebrewers, this means planning ahead to have those summer brews ready to drink.
Making light- and low-calorie beer starts with designing a recipe and selecting ingredients that will impart flavor without increasing the calorie content. To make a low-calorie beer, homebrewers and professional brewers alike must balance the need for body and flavor with the goal to hit the all-important 100-calorie mark. This balance will make for an enjoyable drinking experience, and compete in calories with a new summer favorite: hard seltzer.
Three professional brewers from Stone Brewing, Anchor Brewing, and Anderson Valley Brewing Company discuss using different ingredients that contribute big flavor, without upping the calorie count: specialty grains and malts, real fruit, and carefully selected hops.
Where Do Calories Come From in Beer?
Most of the calories in beer come from alcohol. The rest are made up from residual carbohydrates from malts and grains. In order to keep beer around 100 calories, it has to be low in alcohol (generally lower than 4.5 percent alcohol by volume) and low in carbohydrates left over after fermentation. Most commercial beers considered low carb will have fewer than 5 grams of carbs per serving.
Residual carbohydrates create sugars and proteins that increase calorie count. Texture and body are also influenced by sugars and proteins from residual carbohydrates, so it’s easy for low-calorie beer (and low-alcohol beer) to end up tasting watery — which is where a skilled brewer comes in. By creating a recipe that includes unique flavors from specialty malt, fruit, or other ingredients, brewers can combat a thin mouthfeel without adding calories or carbs.
Calculating the Calories in Homebrew
To calculate the calories in one serving of homebrew, all a homebrewer needs is two measurements: original gravity (OG) and final gravity (FG). These are both specific gravity measurements, usually taken with a hydrometer. OG is the specific gravity of the wort measured right before yeast is pitched; and FG is the final or finishing specific gravity measurement taken when fermentation has ceased completely. The OG and FG measurements are entered into the equation* below.
Alcohol Calories = (1881.22 * FG * (OG-FG))/(1.775-OG)
Carbohydrate Calories = 3550.0 * FG * ((0.1808 * OG) + (0.8192 * FG) – 1.0004)
Total calories in the final beer = Alcohol Calories + Carbohydrate Calories
*Equation as used in Beer Smith recipe builder.
A beer with an OG of 1.031 and an FG of 1.005 will have 3.41 percent ABV and exactly 100 calories per 12-ounce serving.
Commercial brewers have dialed in control of their yeast strains and can reliably finish as low as 1.000, which means they can achieve a slightly higher ABV, even at 100 calories. Examples include Lagunitas DayTime IPA at 98 calories and 4 percent ABV; Anderson Valley Black Rice Ale at 90 calories and 3.8 percent ABV; and Anchor Brewing Little Weekend at 100 calories and 3.7 percent ABV. For homebrewers, finishing at 1.005 is a bit more realistic, though finishing lower is definitely possible especially with the right yeast.
By deciding the starting (OG) and finishing (FG) gravity of a beer, the brewer is determining overall drinkability. This is true for homebrewers and pro brewers. Fal Allen, brewmaster at Anderson Valley Brewing Company, says, “I really feel that having a finishing gravity that is low makes a beer more sessionable and more accessible.”
A low finishing gravity (anything below 1.010) results in a beer that is drier and lighter on the palate. A beer with a higher finishing gravity (1.018 or above) will feel more full on the palate and seem more sweet, because of the thick mouthfeel resulting from more residual sugars or proteins.
To skip the math (and the need to remember the order of operations!), online calculators like this ABV Calculator from Brewer’s Friend can do the work for you.
How to Build a Low-Calorie Homebrew Recipe
Once the target measurements for OG and FG are set, the next step is putting together a grain bill to arrive at these targets. The trick is to include just enough specialty malt for flavor, without going too heavy on the carbohydrates. An example of this is Little Weekend, Anchor Brewing’s 100-calorie golden ale with mango. To hit the golden 100-calorie mark, Dane Volek, pilot brewer at Anchor Brewing, keeps the recipe simple with a malt bill of 80 percent pale malt and 20 percent Vienna malt, which is a specialty malt that is higher in carbohydrates/calories.
Volek landed on adding “just a kiss” of Vienna malt to help Little Weekend drink like a typical beer and keep it from being too thin or watery. “It gives it a bit more color, a little bit higher residual sugar, and a little bit more character,” he says.
Allen takes a different approach with Anderson Valley’s Black Rice Ale. He relies on the specialty grain to create the bulk of the flavor: “The black rice adds this unusual delicious umami flavor, so I was able to get a light beer that still packs a lot of flavor into it,” he says.
The rest of the fermentables in Black Rice Ale (ranked among VinePair’s 50 Best Beers of the Year for 2020) come from pale malt and a touch of chocolate malt for color.
“The rice only contributes enough color to make it a brown ale, and we were really going for black,” says Allen.
Fruit for Flavor, Not Texture
Mango is a popular choice for fruited beers because it adds flavor without the punchy acidity of citrus fruit. “Mango is one of those flavors that people really enjoy,” Volek says. “It has a juiciness and also a flashiness to it.”
To increase Little Weekend’s tropical fruit flavor without bulking up the carbohydrates and calories, Volek uses fruit purée. The mango purée is added right at the end of fermentation when the beer has almost reached the desired final gravity. “We only get a tiny bit of additional fermentation from the fruit,” Volek says, so there isn’t much alcohol created from fruit sugars.
Allen also adds fruit purées to specialty goses, which weigh in at 120 calories per 12-ounce serving when fermentation is almost completely finished. He says using fruit purées is the best way to get the flavor of real fruit (avoiding the artificial taste of extracts) without concerns for sanitation that can come with whole fruits (like the potential for bacteria on fruit skins).
By waiting for fermentation to be active, and nearly complete, the fruit flavor is there, but the sugars are metabolized by yeast and so do not contribute to the final calorie count in the beer. To match the technique of the pros, homebrewers should wait for gravity to get to a measurement within 0.005 and 0.003 of the target FG (or until bubbles in the air lock have almost ceased). Then, carefully add fruit purée directly to the fermenter.
Adding the right amount of purée takes some experimentation. Volek says that to keep the body of the beer light, you need to add enough fruit, but not too much so that the beer acquires texture from the purée. (We aren’t looking to make a smoothie beer!)
Hops for Bitterness and Balance (Not Flavor)
Brewers often turn to fruit or specialty ingredients to give low-calorie beer flavor that complements a very light body and low alcohol content. This is so common because hops can quickly become uncomfortably bitter with no body or sweetness for balance. That’s why Stone Brewing Company’s Features and Benefits IPA was such a big challenge for senior manager of brewing and innovation Jeremy Moynier.
“A lot of low-cal beers are lagers, but Stone is really well known for making IPAs and we wanted to live up to those expectations,” Moynier says. The trick to extracting maximum citrus and fruit flavors from hops like Azacca and Mosaic, without adding too much bitterness, was “loading the back end of the beer with more hops and continually playing with amounts and varieties,” he says.
For Features and Benefits, Moynier landed on a blend of Cashmere, Vic Secret, Azacca, and Mosaic hops to bring pungent flavors of orange, pear, white peach, and melon, while only adding 29 IBUs (a measure of bitterness).
Adding hops during or after fermentation ensures temperatures will never be high enough to convert hop acids into bitter iso-alpha-acids (a reaction that occurs at temperatures around 180 degrees Fahrenheit). Without the iso-alpha-acid conversion, hops contribute mostly highly aromatic essential oils at this stage of the brewing process, meaning more fruity notes in the final beer.
At Anchor, Volek is also conscious of how much bitterness is extracted from hops when brewing lighter-bodied beers. For Little Weekend, Volek says, noticeable bitterness is important to balance the sweetness from mango and Vienna malt. At Anderson Valley, for light-bodied beers like Black Rice Ale, Allen says he only adds enough hops to benefit from their antimicrobial properties. He sticks to “very neutral hops, and we don’t dry-hop or use finishing hops, so they are just there to balance malt sweetness.”
Final Recipe Considerations for Brewing Low-Calorie Beer
Since calculating calories is dependent on OG and FG (per the equation above), it is essential to hit these two target measurements.
To ensure the proper OG is achieved, Volek recommends using two mash temperatures, which will get the most out of enzyme activity. He suggests a mash step at 140-142 degrees Fahrenheit, and a step at 148-150 degrees Fahrenheit. These lower-temperature steps ensure that beta amylase is continually used to convert the maximum amount of starch into sugars that can be completely fermented out by yeast (therefore, producing lower gravity measurements).
When it comes to selecting yeast, Moynier says almost any brewers yeast will work because the desired alcohol content is so low. It is important, however, to select a yeast that the brewer has experience with and is comfortable using. “We have a house yeast that we have been using for years, and know fully what it can and can’t do,” Moynier says.
To brew a sessionable summer sipper that hits the same calorie content as a hard seltzer, it’s all about calculating the target gravity, adding flavor while maintaining balance, and hitting your measurements on brew day and through fermentation. Hitting every point on the checklist will all be worth it when you can kick back outside with homebrew that is light enough to enjoy all day!

McDonald’s Franchises Hack McFlurry Machines to Bypass Sanitization Process
McDonald’s ice cream machines break all the time. They are broken so often that their brokenness has become a meme, with McDonald’s tweeting last year “we have a joke about our soft serve machine but we’re worried it won’t work.” Podcasts have been made about the broken machines and a software developer has written a bot that estimates that, at any given time, roughly 10 percent of all McDonald’s soft serve machines are broken.
They also make people sick. Soft serve ice cream machines are a breeding ground for disease if they aren’t properly maintained. A 2005 NBC News investigation revealed just how dirty those machines can be. Improved machines released after the investigation made the ice cream machines safer, but only if they’re maintained, which can be expensive and time consuming. Some store managers and repair techs have learned a trick that bypasses the machine’s safety mechanisms. This has led to dirty machines that can make people sick.
McDonald's McFlurry and soft serve machines, made by the Taylor Company, are part of what Wired called a "milkshake shakedown" in an investigation published last month: "sell franchisees a complicated and fragile machine. Prevent them from figuring out why it constantly breaks." The machines break because there are a lot of moving parts, and the machines need to be able to handle cold ice cream but also have to withstand heating cycles that clean the devices. The software that powers the machines is also often faulty and, as laid out in a lawsuit filed against Taylor this month, consists of “flawed code that caused the machines to malfunction.”
There is, however, a way to get certain Taylor ice cream machines that are used at McDonald’s back online quickly using a hardware hack that Taylor has classified as a “very serious issue” in an internal service bulletin, Motherboard has learned. Maintenance employees can install a “jumper,” a small metal or plastic bracket, on some of the electric pins on the back of the machine to bypass a software system that makes the machine inoperable if it hasn’t been cleaned in a certain amount of time. Doing this could make ice cream dispensed from these machines dangerous because it bypasses critical cleaning and sanitization features; Taylor itself has told maintenance workers that doing so "can greatly increase the risk of serving unsafe product to the public."
Tumblr media
Although the bypass is not officially endorsed by either Taylor or McDonald's corporate, it is used by some McDonald's restaurants because cleaning ice cream machines is an arduous and expensive task.
"You're under pressure to get it up and running," a maintenance professional who has worked in many McDonald's restaurants for the last 15 years in the midwest told Motherboard, adding that, obviously, stores can't sell ice cream while the machines are broken, and customers are often upset when they can't get McFlurrys or soft serve. The maintenance worker, whom Motherboard agreed to keep anonymous because they fear losing their job, said that a McDonald's store manager once pressured them to install a jumper.
“I was replacing a man who had been fired. When I arrived there, I had been informed he was installing the jumper on the shake machine. I refused to do it,” they said. “To clean the machine, it’s a three hour job from start to finish—you have to drain it, clean the cylinders, check the fudge and caramel pumps and o-rings. It’s a long and detailed process. Installing the jumper is considered a trick to get it up and running—you don’t have to tear it down.”
This bypass is widely known among maintenance workers who repair the equipment and by both Taylor and McDonald’s, according to the worker, internal documentation obtained by Motherboard, and health inspection records.
Tumblr media
Part of the issue is the Taylor machine's heat treatment process. Old Taylor machines needed to be constantly cleaned to keep running. It was a laborious and time consuming process. The new machines use a heat treatment that superheats the machine inside to clean it. When a Taylor machine is doing its nightly heat treatment, it only needs cleaning every 14 days. Using the jumper to bypass the system shuts off the heat treatment cycle and it doesn’t come back off until the jumper is removed. Installing the jumper means it no longer meets the food safety standards developed by NSF International, a group that approves restaurant food equipment.
In 2013, Taylor issued a “service bulletin” in which it identified a “very serious issue that can jeopardize the product served from heat treatment machines. Taylor technicians performing equipment updates recently reported that they found heat treatment machines with a shunt (jumper) installed on the brush clean service pins on the interface boards.” Doing this allows the machine to “circumvent freezer locks” that ensure the machine has gone through a heat treatment cycle that sterilizes the machine.
“It’s a dairy product, so there’s a reason you clean it out and sanitize it. You’ve got stuff building up in there, stuff growing in a cold, moist environment”
“Under no circumstances should a jumper be installed and left on the brush clean service pins!” the bulletin reads. “IMPORTANT: Altering the lock out parameters in heat treatment equipment is a violation of FDA Food Code as confirmed via testing by NSF under NSF Standard 6 … Such an action can greatly increase the risk of serving unsafe product to the public.”
The McDonald's maintenance worker said it is possibly dangerous to the public to serve ice cream from machines like that have had a jumper installed, though it's difficult to say how often—if ever—people get sick from McFlurrys.
“It’s a dairy product, so there’s a reason you clean it out and sanitize it. You’ve got stuff building up in there, stuff growing in a cold, moist environment,” they added. “So to skip that, for me it’s wrong on so many fundamental levels.”
A video viewed by Motherboard of an ice cream machine with no jumper installed shows a machine that’s beeping and shuts itself down. A second video on a machine that has a jumper installed shows a machine that is not beeping that flashes the words “UNIT CLEANED.”
A spokesperson for McDonald's confirmed to Motherboard that the company is aware of this bypass but believes it is not used often and has impacted a limited number of restaurants, and said that if maintenance employees find a jumper installed on a Taylor ice cream machine, they are supposed to immediately remove it. The company said it has also created training programs to ensure the machines (and all restaurant equipment) are cleaned regularly. The vast majority of McDonald's restaurants are independently owned franchises, and so it can be difficult for McDonald's corporate to know or understand the full scope of issues like this.
“Adhering to the highest standards of safety and cleanliness is always our top priority, and this includes having thorough cleaning processes in place for our soft serve machines to help keep our customers and crew safe. Any systems that bypass the regular cleaning cycle are not authorized or condoned by McDonald’s," McDonald's said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the Taylor Company said in an email that “the ‘jumper’ you refer to is a shunt that bypasses certain critical steps that should never be bypassed because they are necessary to ensure proper sanitation and safety. When we first learned about this unauthorized procedure in 2013, we quickly issued a safety bulletin outlining our concerns. We have provided direction to our authorized factory trained technicians to remove the ‘jumper’ should they encounter this condition in the field. We reiterate these concerns and recommendations today. Our number one concern is the safe operation and servicing of our equipment.”
They added that “these shunts pose serious potential health and safety risks, it also violates FDA Food Code, National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and our own published safety standards.”
Health inspection records from the state of Ohio show that this problem has occurred in the recent past, though it's very difficult to have any idea the scale of the problem. The maintenance worker Motherboard spoke to said that most of the machines he comes in contact with can be bypassed by the jumper (meaning that many McDonald's restaurants are still using this specific model of machine). A July 10 inspection of a McDonald's in Ohio found a "critical violation" in which the inspector was unable to access 90-day records of heat treatment cycles, which is a byproduct of having the jumper installed. An August 8 inspection found the same thing, and called it a "critical repeat."
McDonald's ice cream machines have a much more complicated saga than you'd expect for a piece of fast food equipment, which is explored at length in the excellent Wired article. That article focuses on entrepreneurs Jeremy O’Sullivan and Melissa Nelson, who designed a device that would help franchise owners diagnose their own systems, make simple repairs, and avoid costly repair bills from Taylor. They called their gadget the Kytch and it worked like an on-board diagnostic reader for cars. Among other things, the Kytch device gives store owners access to a secret diagnostic menu they can't usually see.
The Kytch devices became popular at McDonald's, but McDonald's eventually warned stores that installing a Kytch would void restaurant owners' warranties and told them not to use it. McDonald's and Taylor soon announced new machines that would have many of the features Kytch has. Last week, Kytch filed a lawsuit against Taylor and a McDonald's franchisee sold a Kytch to that it alleges helped Taylor reverse engineer the Kytch. It also alleged that Taylor’s repair monopoly has made the ice cream machines dangerous. McDonald's corporate is not named in the suit.
“This is a case about corporate espionage and the extreme steps one manufacturer has taken to conceal and protect a multimillion-dollar repair racket,” the lawsuit said. “The problem is that Taylor designed its software so that only Taylor-certified technicians can service and repair the machines.
“Taylor’s own documents confirm that in 2017 alone, 6,500 Taylor-certified technicians brought in almost $80 million in revenue for parts and service support.”
The lawsuit also specifically mentions the jumper issue, noting “many Taylor machines have a jumper placed on the W2 pins on the rear of the machine that disables necessary safety mechanisms … Taylor has been aware of this hazard for years but has taken no action to correct this defect. This violates NSF International’s food safety requirements and may endanger consumers.”
McDonald's, for its parts, says that there is no conspiracy between Taylor and McDonald's and that it has been encouraged by its new connectivity solutions, software, and machines that it has rolled out since October.
"Our fans deserve to enjoy McDonald’s cool, creamy soft serve whenever the craving strikes, and we have a dedicated team working to improve the reliability of our soft serve machines," McDonald's said. "Some of their solutions have already begun to roll out in restaurants—like new training resources for crew and maintenance ‘check-ups’ for the machines to keep them running smoothly. We’re even testing a smart technology that sends real-time texts when the machines aren’t working properly so they can be fixed ASAP. We're committed to getting this right for our customers.”

A lot of the debate around black NFL players kneeling to protest police killings and racism seems to take place in a historical vacuum. The history of athletes and protest is seldom mentioned and, what’s worse, the reason why Colin Kaepernick and his comrades began protesting during the national anthem has been drowned out in the shouting. On #MAGA twitter, flooded in recent weeks with angry mobs calling for a boycott of the NFL, various images have been making the rounds depicting Martin Luther King Jr. with his hand over his heart in respect for the American flag. One photo was accompanied by a message saying MLK “didn’t take the knee in protest of the flag or the anthem, he took the knee in prayer to God.” It was followed by the hashtag #BoycottNFL.
Invoking King’s name on the right is nothing new — ahistorical versions of King have been used to defend gun ownership, racial discrimination, and the Republican Party. In this current climate surrounding the NFL protests, King has once again been transformed into a malleable symbol for rampant deployment by people trying to tell protesters and black people today to shut up. One of the biggest problems with all of this is that it is based on complete fiction and total ignorance of who King actually was and what he actually believed. It is also particularly vile when used to try to suppress protest against police killings.
The same pattern applies to Rosa Parks and her civil disobedience against segregation on public buses. It applies to the civil rights movement in general. Caricatures have been created after being sanitized, historically revised, and made palatable for mass consumption and abuse by crass politicians. It is these sanitized versions that are made into statues, given national holidays, and may one day end up on U.S. currency.
An important and groundbreaking new book coming out in January digs deep into this manufactured mythology surrounding King, Parks, and other figures and movements. It is called “A More Beautiful and Terrible History: The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History.” Its author is Jeanne Theoharis, a distinguished professor of political science at Brooklyn College in New York. Her previous book, “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks,” won an NAACP image award and other accolades. Theoharis joined us last week on Intercepted. Below is a transcript of the entire, unedited interview.
Jeremy Scahill:
Jeanne Theoharis, welcome to Intercepted.
Jeanne Theoharis:
Thanks for having me.
Jeremy Scahill:
Before we get into some of these specific examples, I’m just wondering about your overall view of how key historical figures or moments in the civil rights movement are kind of used or inaccurately portrayed in our current discourse, either by politicians or by ordinary people having arguments online.
Jeanne Theoharris:
I mean I think what we’ve seen, and this has happened over the past number of decades and I would argue since really Reagan changes his position and signs the King holiday, is the kind of creation of a national fable of the civil rights movement.
And so now the civil rights movement is used to make Americans feel good about themselves. You know, from 50th anniversary commemorations of the March on Washington, to the Selma to Montgomery march, from the dedication of King’s statue on the Mall, from the statue of Rosa Parks in Statuary Hall. All of these events have become places where we now celebrate the United States, where we feel so good about the progress we’ve made.
And I think in the process, these kind of dangerous ideas about what the civil rights movement was, what it entailed, how it went forth have become cemented. And so, as you’re implying politicians, citizens, constantly invoke the civil rights movement in the present to justify certain kinds of positions, to chastise contemporary movements; whether it’s Black Lives Matter, whether it’s Colin Kaepernick’s stand that has now turned into a much broader stand by athletes. We’re constantly being bombarded with, “This is not what King would do.” You know, “Be like King, be like Parks,” that strip and utterly distort what the civil rights movement was and what people like King and Parks actually did and stood for.
Jeremy Scahill:
Well, in fact you had this meme floating around online, of Martin Luther King and one of his advisers, standing hand over heart in front of an American flag and the message there was, “Martin Luther King stood for the American flag, he’s not like Colin Kaepernick or any of these other black athletes that are engaged in this.”
Jeanne Theoharris:
Right and you then we also saw the King Center and Bernice King tweet a couple weeks ago basically how unpopular Martin Luther King was. You know, what it took to be like him.
And then some of the comments, you may have seen this, to Bernice King’s Twitter was literally like, “you’re defacing the memory of Martin Luther King,” and you’re like: do you know who this is? Like, do you understand?
I mean so this idea of what King was and who King was has completely become separated from like what the life of Martin Luther King was like and what particularly his political life from 1955 to his assassination, 1968, actually looked like, and what Americans thought of him at the time.
Jeremy Scahill:
Right, and we interviewed Tavis Smiley who wrote an excellent book about the last year of King’s life, where King was basically disinvited to everything. He was no longer embraced by the mainstream of the civil rights movement and he was increasingly denouncing US imperialism talking about how “my own government is the greatest purveyor of violence on earth.” It’s the one King quote that I would love to see at an NFL game, when they have all the rockets and the war craft flying over it. Let’s put that Martin Luther King quote up about the US government being the greatest purveyor of violence on earth.
Jeanne Theoharris:
Absolutely, but I think we also need to remember that even the King at the high water mark of 1963, is not popular. So, in Gallup poll, the week before the March on Washington, two-thirds of Americans don’t support the March on Washington. You have Congressman denouncing it as un-American. And in the wake of the March on Washington, the FBI and the Kennedys, this is the moment when you see the escalation of surveillance of Martin Luther King, to kind of wall-to-wall surveillance of him. They call him a demagogue, the most dangerous. Even in this moment, right? We’re not even at ’67 King, with the public speech against the War in Vietnam, we are at King and the March on Washington, and that King is seen as dangerous and that King is surveilled. Right? It’s not just ’67 and ’68 King.
Jeremy Scahill:
Let’s talk about that King in the earlier 1960s, when the public figure of Martin Luther King became a hotbed issue for all kinds of debate and discussion. What were media outlets and sort of broader liberal society saying about the tactics that Martin Luther King and others in that movement were using?
Jeanne Theoharris:
I mean, again, if you look at polls in the early 60s, most Americans do not agree. They don’t agree with the Freedom Rides, they don’t agree with the sit-ins, they don’t agree that the civil rights movement is the way to go. They don’t believe — again, with the March on Washington, there’s this mob justice. They’re constantly paranoid about violence. They constantly talk about violence, even though there’s no violence.
I’ve been particularly interested, partly because of my own work, which focuses a great deal on the civil rights movement outside of the South, how King is received outside of the south. And if we look at how King, for instance, was received in California in the early 60s, and this is before 1965, Watts Uprising.
King is in and out of LA a number of times in the early 60s, including in 1964. In 1963, after much work and much civil rights activities, you see California pass a fair housing law, and white people go crazy, realtors go crazy. And they get on the ballot, Prop 14 in 1964, on the November ballot which is going to be the presidential election, and basically trying to repeal this law.
And King comes multiple times, right? There’s a massive civil rights campaign in the state to try to keep the law and to vote no on the proposition. And King is repeatedly called a communist, King is picketed, King is denounced for that work in California in 1964. And then we will see, white Californians by a 3:1 margin vote for Prop 14 in 1964, and they sent Lyndon Johnson back to the White House, but they, still, like in my home, I don’t want any fair housing laws. And what King will call this is a vote for ghettos, right? Because that’s what it’s about.
And so, he’s not popular in the north when he’s talking about — I mean, he writes this really beautiful thing that most people have not read in the couple months after Watts, where he’s basically like, “You invite me to your cities, and you sit up there with all this regalia, and you praise the actions of Southern black people, but, you know, when talk turns to condition local conditions, basically it’s polite but firm resistance.”

InSite of the town
Melbourne is a small, attractive, appealing and historic settlement, with a vibrant and varied social mix and a strong community spirit.
During the period c1770 – c1890 Melbourne grew from an agricultural village into a small and prosperous manufacturing town.
This Georgian market town is in South Derbyshire on the edge of The National Forest. It is about 8 miles south of Derby and 2 miles from the River Trent.
This town has maintained its popularity as a lively, thriving village and home to 5000 inhabitants.
Melbourne means 'Mill Stream' so it is appropriate that one of the best known features is the old mill pool known as Melbourne Pool, picturesquely landscaped in 1845 for Lord Melbourne, the former Prime Minister (1779-1848).
It was said that in 1947 ‘there were more thatched cottages in Melbourne than in any village’, although sadly, many have disappeared since then.

The Melbourne festival
Arts Melbourne Limited, a company limited by guarantee, was set up to run Melbourne Festival On 1 January 2008.
Melbourne is centrally located between Derby, Nottingham and Leicester in the East Midlands. The postcode for Melbourne town centre is DE73 8DS.
Melbourne Festival became a trading name of Arts Melbourne Limited. The principal reason for doing this was that there are arts related activities, such as Open Exhibitions, the Gallery and Workshops which need a different approach and publicity and are outside the September Melbourne Festival period.
Melbourne festival hosts professional artists selling paintings, sculpture, furniture, print making, textiles, ceramics, design craft, drawing etc.
Melbourne Festival aims to organise and run an annual festival of visual and performing arts in Melbourne and the surrounding district.
Melourn artists are:
William Dexter, painter, was born there in 1808 and
Ronald Pope, sculptor and artist.
Tumblr media
A quick brief, overview
Melbourne festival happens every year, although this year they had a dramatic change of plans, the atmosphere will be quiet different and specific measures will be taken because of COVID 19.
For example:
Architecture Trail was cancelled
They are still doing the Melbourne Festival Emerging Artist Award which is going to be exhibited in a gallery space, with art from different people and also from the derby college art and design students who were 2nd years last year.
The gallery will be open for people to go in, see the art and vote for the best. Melbourne will definitely be taking measures and set rules for health and safety reasons, e.g., keeping distance, sanitizing the hands before and after going in, having a one way system and they might do an online exhibition too. All of this will take place so COVID 19 would not spread further.
Afterall the good news is that we are still going  ahead with our 1st project, the guerrilla art. Although we need to approach this project and others more cautiously too.
We need to know that
Sharon is the customer of Melbourne festival and we will need to fit around whatever thy would ask us to do.
Whatever idea they chose we would probably need to do it alone and not in pares or groups, so we need to consider the time when choosing an idea.
We were also informed that not all of the places and buildings will be available to us, only a few properties have chosen to give permission for our wok to be placed at so it is most likely that Sharon will already have some places in mind where our work could be installed.
Last thing last is that we need to know about the weather forecast and think about the materials we could use.
We need to do
We need to come up with a lot of ideas and show them to our costumer as soon as possible.
Use tumbler to display everything important.
One of the most liked idea from our costumer is making of different kinds of posters. The hand drawn letter forms arranged in words, statement or phrases that we could express what is in our mind from current affairs, news over the last 12 months; we need to refined those into sentences written with beautiful lettering in a form of a poster, which could be: a painted poster, printed poster, relief 3 dimensional poster etc.
It also needs to be A1 or A2.
Make notes in our sketchbook and journals.
Make action plans.
We need to deal with the formal elements: lines, shapes, colours etc.
Answering questions about the projects from one of the sessions that i voice recored
Do we need to talk about our inspirations behind the ideas?
We are really interested to knowing where the ideas came from, use tumbler, sketchbook, drawings, journal anything that will communicate your ideas, what you would like to put into a space. Really the costumer will be happy enough to see your ideas but it will definitely help you on selling the ideas better if you had a little brief explanation of them.
Exactly, what is the theme about?
Originally the theme is about 'commotion in the ocean', although our clients have been really open minded and interested on to seeing any kinds of ideas that will be about the current affairs, especially since a lot has happened and changed throughout this year e.g., the blm movement, corona virus, climate change, global leadership, anything that you would like to express. These ideas and themes can be used for the Derby Well project too.
What are our limits, when it comes to choosing the place where our posters and artwork will go?
Melbourne is big and last year several people agreed on us to use their buildings, the outside or/and the inside of the buildings to display our art work. This year because of the global pandemic not many people have offered up these opportunities, however there were some shop owners that offered us their shop fronts and there will be some outdoor spaces around town too. That is why Sharon ended up choosing the poster ideas because of how easily it could be displayed and how powerfully it could communicate a message across to the audience.
She is the one who knows about the offered places where our art could be displayed at. Sharon is also talking about reducing the amount of locations, where instead of having our work spread across the city, we could bomb a whole window full of posters, and do this for all the available places and shop windows in the city. So overall Sharon would love if the poster ideas would happen and if there is something eye catching from your other ideas that might be perfect when installed in specific locations like the bus stop or hanged from building to building she will definitely inform us. So don’t worry because everyone will have a piece of their work into the festival and on their cv.
Do they both, the Derby Well and Melbourne festival prefer the typographical poster ideas?
Yes. There were a handful of you that were sending ideas over the summer and over everything that was send they really liked the ideas of the posters too, so there will be  continuation of posters around Derby as well.
Tumbler, why are we using it, what do we post?
Tumblr has been used every year by us, also the UAL really likes it when it comes to assessing your work in the end of the year. I think now days, because of the pandemic, Tumblr and other online platforms are the best when it comes to doing your work as a group of designers and artists, without endangering other people, it also allows us to quickly asses and give feedback and is a grate platform for you to show the world what you do as a designer and/or an artist.
You do need to be careful not to duplicate what is on your book or on your journal, instead you can use it as a blog, a magazine, or a fanzine. And you should definitely put what your work is about, the context, what the brief is asking you to make, communicate what's on your mind, put some of your ideas and in the end you should definitely share your final outcome with us. You can talk about how its finished , your output as a creative person, write texts and share images, whatever you see fit.
My response
This project will allow me to understand, regenerate ideas and look more into our ocean and the different species that live there. It will also allow us to show the audience how important these waters are to humanity, how they affect climate change and how we are slowly killing the life in the ocean and soon ourselves. The ocean plays a big role in our lives because it produces over half of the world’s oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere, it also helps regulate temperatures as the oceans absorbs the sun’s heat, transfers it to the atmosphere and then distributing it around the world, acting like a heater in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer. There are a lot of natural products from marine/ocean plants and animals which we use in medicinal products, including ingredients that help fight cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease
After doing some research around the ocean, I came across a large number of endangered species; whether they were nearly getting extinct because people killed them for parts, for food, or killed them with illegal fishing equipment, or some were forced to leave their habitats because of the amount of people invading their spaces, that was simply an alarming information. The disgusting  amount of pollution we are caucusing and the damaging waste we bring to the ocean due to the harmful activities we do, disgusts me, overall, the conclusion is that we are suffocating our oceans and not just them put our whole planet and later on in life all of these activities will kill the human race too.
The task we were given fits perfectly with the 'commotion in the ocean' theme because guerrilla art is allowing us to make work about the recurring issues that are happening around the world and affecting our oceans, we can make a strong statement, speak up, raise awareness and educate people on this topic. This will also enable us to focus on the changes we can make and how we can encourage people to think about their actions and how they should do something to reduce pollution, global warming, overfishing etc.
While exploring this topic I will try to remain relevant to the audience, because our art will be installed around the Melbourne town which will be seen by a large and varied audience, including children, families, elderly etc., I need to make it suitable, appropriate and understandable for all ages, I also hope it delivers the same message to everyone and to stay in topic. To make sure that happens I have to focus, make contextual research, evaluate, analyze, have plenty of secondary and primary pictures, experiment, think about the right materials and make sure to plan ahead. This will be helpful for my future projects too.

Keep Putting on Face Mask Until Corona Is Defeated
Tumblr media
Although, the situation around us is ameliorating slowly but you must not careless even for fractional duration until the dark situation wiped out. Hence, putting on face mask, wearing head gear and carrying hand sanitizers are till under the criteria of necessary things and to-do’s.
Till the time, I am pretty sure, you all are well known about all these types of medical measures, particularly all types of face masks. Yet for your future reference, I will glimpse on multifarious types of masks along with their specific utilities below.
Tumblr media
A normal face mask
To facilitate every day’s prosaic life, this mask is made for. In general it’s a normal cloth mask which covers the portion of mouth in order to prevent inhaling poisonous smoke, fetid odor, high cold and just gross pollution. No specific medical attention is given to this.
Tumblr media
A surgical cotton mask for doctors and health workers
As mentioned above, it is for the doctors and their acquaintances are used at the time of medical emergency, operation theatre or any routine checkup. It is made up with three layered thin filter cloth or cotton piece. And it is disposable. This type of mask is most efficient for any kind of germinal infection to odor to air pollution. And this is most cheap out of all other types.
A three layered cloth mask
It is like the above. Only difference is, it is made up with layered cotton and reusable. However, it is more efficient for pollution control than any kind of virus contamination.
Tumblr media
An anti pollutant mask
These are doctors’ prescribed and WHO accepted. It is imperatively made up for trapping the finest suspended pollutants, which are marked by scientists as PM2.5, 5 and 10. Hence, following the particulate matter number the masks are also categorized as well as build accordingly, like, PM 2.5 and so on.
An antibacterial mask
This is the ideal one, especially for current scenario. In fact during this pandemic situation, WHO prescribed masks have been available in the market, which are known as N95 mask, KN95 mask etc. Be  carefull while purchasing a medicated N 95 mask. For, there has been abundance of fraud masks as well.
A contemporary concept of a customised printed mask to promote
The word ‘promotion’ means exhibition. Whether, for individual diligent flaunt or to enhance business efficacy we often lend the concept and custom. Although, the word is more efficient for business world yet in this tough time, we can spread the message of social awareness through capping noses and mouths by printed masks, with messages like, a face cover can protect or if you wish to survive do put me on etc. That’s why popularity of customised printed mask suddenly become trendy.
Apart from social issues, custom masks can efficiently be used among several business platforms in order to show an intelligent promotion. For example, a logo printed mask with a health conscious quote does maintain its oath of a healthy business. Or the concept would also be perfectly used by several NGOs who already stand by the needy in this perishable time. They can distribute quote printed masks among indigents at free of cost.
How and where to get a mask?
The answer instantly flashes in our mind just after reading the question is, a medical store. Well, impressive enough. But here comes the witty part. If you look for a set of custom mask, then you better look for a custom store than any medical store. Nearly all custom shops are making these presently by following doctor’s rule. In this way, a popular custom shop is Printland.in, which dispenses heterogeneous kinds of masks at perquisite price ranges. For example, a custom disposable mask is of rs. 7/-, a bulk mask of set 5 or 10 is off roughly rs 225/ to 450/-. Additionally, there is chance of getting discount in bulk order and a free sanitizer on any order above rs. 700.
Now, to get into the details of printing, you have to follow few basics. These are…
Firstly, Google custom stores and choose a plausible online site, say Printland.in or any other and check it’s variety and availability of masks. You can also use credible offline podiums.
Then choose a mask or a bulk disposable mask or cotton masks or a N95 mask for further printing.
Then head towards editing bar. There you do upload any logo or any message you want to print in the ‘uploading image’ section.
Adjust the photo a little to the editing bar. And finish the method.
Hence, I am sure that this piece of information certainly provides terse information about varieties of masks. So, do buy a few as per requirement. And remember, you must not loosen the degree of personal hygiene until the situation improves. After all we all should have one goal in our mind, just to relegate Corona from this Universe. So, I believe you, me and all will corroborate together and hasten the process to complete faster. Because, more we stand in unity faster we can defeat the disease.
