Anti-destiel Wank (sorry but I have to)
If you hardcore ship Destiel, please just scroll on by. Please.
Ok, I'm gonna get myself in trouble, I'm sure, but I gotta get this off my chest...
Destiel may be a perfectly fine ship,
but,
IT'S JUST A SHIP.
In the actual context of the show there IS NO ROMANTIC OR SEXUAL TENSION/RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEAN AND CAS.*
Full fucking stop.
Subtext can be interpreted in ANY WAY YOU WANT. It is subjective. You will find whatever you look for in it. Please stop waving subtext interpretations around as if they were objective facts, they aren't. Subtext, by its very definition, relies on implied meaning and understanding, this means it is a subjective interpretation of the media that varies from viewer to viewer. The inherent variations are what make it fanon/headcanon instead of canon.
If you see tension of that sort there and it makes you happy to postulate the what if, then go ahead, that is what fanon and head canon and fan fiction is all about. But if the fact that the tension you think you see isn't being addressed in actual canon makes you grumpy, maybe you need to take some of the fanatic out of your fanning. If you are beginning to think the show creators are actively trying to repress Dean's "true sexuality and feelings" because they are evil, you might need to consider that you've dug in too deep.
Because, like I ship wincest. Yeah, I said it. But I am aware that canon doesn't actually include any level of sexual or romantic (in the modern sense) relationship between Sam and Dean. Wincest is not canon.
Now, are Sam and Dean the real "love" story of the show? Yes, yes they are. That has always been 100% the entire point of Supernatural, the great love story of two brothers struggling to save the world together. It's about family and everything that means, but at its heart, it is about Sam and Dean WInchester. Not all kisses and cuddles and sex kind of love, but love nonetheless. Full stop.
Now, the fact that Destiel is such a popular ship is not surprising to me in the least. Jensen and Misha are two gorgeous guys who share a lot of chemistry on screen and off. And, it is canon that Cas loves Dean. That has been evident since Lazarus Rising (4x01) when Cas was introduced. Castiel's love of Dean Winchester has been his character's main motivation all along and culminated with Cas sacrificing himself to save Dean, after telling him that he loved him in Despair (15x18)
But Dean's main motivation has always been to watch out for his brother. And though Castiel became Dean's best friend, he still comes second to Sam. Nothing against Cas, he just isn't Sam.
So why are so many people so absolutely convinced that Destiel is so real within the context of the story?
Well, I'm pretty sure that it is the same reason that they are so opposed to the idea of wincest.
As we all know, incest is bad, mmmkay? Incest is probably one of the biggest, strongest, cultural taboos we have. So it makes perfect sense that the idea of two blood-related brothers having sexual or romantic feelings for each other is considered icky. It's so off putting that it is a complete no go for even fantasizing about for most people. And that's probably a good thing, tbh, incest should be taboo. But where does that taboo spring from? Why is it so deeply off limits? There are several reasons, but the two main ones are:
That incest can lead to inbreeding.
That incest too often involves molestation or rape of children.
Both of these are seriously bad enough that we all pretty much collectively agree to avoid incestuous relationships. But, do either of these two reasons really apply in the case of Sam and Dean?
The short answer is no. Primarily this is because they are fictional characters that are being played by unrelated actors. But to humor the objectors we'll look at it closer.
We can take the first one right off the table. As two cis men, neither of them is capable of becoming pregnant, so outside of the mpreg (male pregnancy) or gender bending subsets of fanfic tropes, this is not applicable.
The second reason only becomes an issue when talking about the characters earlier in their lives, pre-show or flashbacks. Weecest or teencest, or whatever, are things, but these typically have separate ship names for a reason, because even when dealing with fictional characters this squicks a lot of folks who are otherwise down with the wincest ship. So most content is tagged or labeled as its specific flavor, so anyone can find it or avoid it. But wincest that involves adult Sam and Dean (the specific pairing I'm referring to in this post) doesn't apply to the second reason listed above.
So there really is nothing morally wrong with Sam and Dean having sex with each other. I know that statement is going to bother a whole lot of people, but it is true. Just because something is taboo does not automatically make it morally wrong. Being gay used to be taboo in our culture, and is still taboo for way too many people, even though there is nothing morally wrong with homosexuality.
Now, I wasn't in the fandom back at the beginning of the show, but I've heard tell that the very first Sam/Dean fic was posted just a few hours after the pilot episode aired. A few hours, that's all it took for some highly motivated fan to type out a story where they were more than just brothers. The story is called Reunion. If you watch the pilot, even with your anti-incest goggles on, the chemistry between Jared and Jensen is palpable throughout. There is a reason the show lasted for 15 years, and that reason is that Sam and Dean just work on screen so well together. So if it only took one episode for that ship to be born, what did all the future destiel shippers do? Well I imagine they felt somewhat uncomfortable for the first 60 episodes.
Flash forward to season four and the introduction of Castiel. Finally there was another male character for fans squicked by the notion of sweet, sweet brother loving to focus on! Cas was clearly fixated on Dean more than Sam, which followed the plot since Cas had been instructed to rescue Dean from Hell. As it would turn out, the brothers were destined to be the meatsuits that Michael and Lucifer wore to the big prize fight to determine the fate of the world. Prepping Sam for Lucifer involved him consuming demon blood, which made most of the angelic host view him as an abomination, a factor that Cas had to learn to get past in his relationship with the younger brother. But Dean was ready to go right out of the box, no assembly required for Michael. Castiel, and many of his angelic brethren, as well as a lot of Demons, seem to be drawn to Dean in a way that they just aren't drawn to Sam. Is this fair? Hell no. But I mean, look at him! Jensen has sexual tension with literally everything he comes in contact with, people, food, his car, the man oozes sexual attraction. Don't get me wrong, Jared is a sexy fucking ball of sunshine, and our Sammy is a damned attractive man, but he tends to be more repressed and less openly sexual than his brother, so it is what it is.
Where was I going with this? That's a good question. I got a bit distracted, sorry. Oh right...
At its root, destiel is a reactive projection. There is undeniable tension between characters in the show. Since all of the main cast are male, that tension is highly homoerotic. The two main characters, who are undeniably emotionally enmeshed and co-dependent with each other (a very well established canon fact btw), happen to be blood-related brothers. Oh no! Where is all that tension coming from since we cannot admit or accept that it's coming from them? Ah ha! Here is a new male character that we like, yes, it is obviously coming from his interactions with one of the brothers, even though he wasn't in the first 60 episodes. Yes, it all makes perfect sense now, all that tension was merely foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
I've read through all the destiel subtext posts. I've gone back and watched all the scenes they reference multiple times with the express purpose of finding destiel. I'm telling you it is just a fanon ship. Which is 100% fine and good, ship that ship, just stop declaring it more canon than canon, because it's not.
And if you don't like fictional incest, cool, cool, you don't have to. But the underlying sexual tension existed in the first 60 episodes prior to Misha being cast on the show, so it was coming from somewhere. And it'd be cooler if you learned how to scroll past people shipping wincest, like I'm sure you do for all the other weirdass, squicky shit that people post all over the internet. But if it makes your heart beat a little faster to imagine that Dean and Cas have eyesex but that Dean and Sam don't, that's fine. I think it's delusional because neither ship is actually canon and both are 100% A-Ok in fanon, and honestly Jensen doesn't seem to be able to control his eyes, which is not something anyone should feel bad about (it's fucking marvelous) but you do you.
*Castiel does love Dean. He confessed as much, but Dean did not reciprocate. What I am referencing is a mutual romance or attraction, which does not exist.

Also regarding fanon Tim it is really pity that a lot of fans and even writers regard Tim as a mini-Bruce when i feel he should be opposite especially when it comes to their social circle. Like Tim is fascinating to me because he looked at the dark and gloom and isolation of both Gotham and Bruce and went, "It deserves to be saved. I will save it and i'll do it without it destroying me" (he failed but he tried, god did he try).
If Bruce Wayne is a mask for Batman then Robin is a mask for Tim Drake.
If Bruce is actively isolating himself then Tim is actively seeking people out (even if it sometimes means slight stalking and casual breaking and entering, which, Tim, buddy).
When his parents died Bruce buried the child he was and dedicated his life to make sure something like this would never happen to anyone else and when Jason he almost went and broke his one rule. When everyone in Tim's life was dead or dying he tried to held onto every little thing that could bring that normalcy back from before everything went to shit, whether it be cloning, trying to find Bruce, or even lazarus pit.
It is why Tim becoming batman always ends horribly, not because Tim is secretly a deranged guy but because becoming batman means affectively killing what makes him Tim Drake. It is also why i think the best ending for him would be retirement, the boy who chose to take up the robin mantle grows up to be the man who chose to give up the mantle (naturally this would take a lot of development since i feel Tim is rather addicted to it but also i think it would be good. I also feel he would still do hero work on side but as a consultant or support)
(I alse feel isolation is a major struggle for both of them. However Bruce embraces it, becomes a part of it, while Tim rejects it, loses to it. A Lonely Place of Dying indeed)
(i am so sorry i feel like i have more generalized both the characters and could be wrong about them since i am still newer to the comics but these are my thoughts from what i have seen so far)
Nah, anon, you're valid. I'm not crazy into Tim and haven't read anything with him yet (though @benbamboozled has convinced me to read Young Justice 98), from what I know of the canon version of Tim, he is very critical of Batman, which you kind of have to be if your goal is to help them (as opposed to enabling someone)
Here we have Tim on Bruce's approach to paranoia and work colleagues:
Tumblr media
which will for me always be core part of Tim's characterization. He's very far from the boy who will blindly follow Bruce to get his approval. I think of all the Robins Tim might be the least interested in Bruce's approval. (Modern era Dick is weirdly open about wanting Bruce's approval which I don't like. Nightwing is for me ideally in extreme denial about his and Bruce's interdependance.)
Tim is far too aware of Batman's problems to want to become him. This is the kid that became Robin at Batman's lowest low. He didn't become the sidekick/ward/son of a vigilante who was larger than life, he became the support of a broken down man. It makes sense to have Dick and Jason involuntarily idolize the man, because the Batman they knew was amazing, but the Batman Tim knew? That was a spiralling man.
Which might also be why it bothers so many people that Tim isn't allowed to grow out of the Robin mantle, it feels extremely natural for him to be getting over his original mantle and connection to Batman.

Jason Todd but Not! (AU's)
If you want to read AUs that give you different versions of Jason Todd, this is for you. These 8 fics are all categorized as gen, and I tried to include lesser known works here.
I'll be listing
Word count
Any rating above teen
Archive warnings
Major relationships
Mind the specific tags on a work before you read
~~~
The We in I by forestgreen
12,680; Jason Todd & Bruce Wayne
There never was a Jason.
A fic exploring Jason Todd through the lens of him having DID. There's so much care put into this fic, and it genuinely changed how I thought about certain canon events. I also love the voice forestgreen employs for Jay. They capture the magic of 80s Jason Todd perfectly, while making him sound correct in the modern setting.
I have no tongue and I must scream by Sassaphrass
5,242; The Batfamily Hunger Games AU: Former Victor Jason Todd returns to his District for the first time in a long time. Something is troubling his fellow Victors and he gets a surprising recruit to his murderous crusade against the Capitol.
AND
Red, and Terrible, and Red by Sassaphrass
13,075; Rape/Non-Con, Underage; Dick Grayson & Jason Todd, Talia al Ghul/Jason Todd On a journey from Victor, to Slave to Rebel (with just a short side-trip through insane vengeance fueled serial killer), for Jason Todd winning the Hunger Games was only the beginning.
I can’t decide which of these to recommend first. They’re part of the same series, and if you get invested you’ll want to read both anyway. The first fic in the series sets the general DC/Hunger Games premise, while the the other one is purely Jason’s backstory. I find myself re-reading Red, and Terrible, and Red because his backstory is immaculate, but you probably should read the setup fic first 😅
Whisper Closely In My Ear by KangaRou
8,518; Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings; Tim Drake & Jason Todd, Dick Grayson & Jason Todd, Jason Todd & Bruce Wayne The words went in one ear, rattled around like bees, before ramming out the other. The doctor was sitting painfully close, only two feet away. The tone of voice implied he was talking louder, not quite a yell but something nearly there; it sounded like a whisper to Jason. So quiet, with every third word unintelligible, except for that first phrase: "Mr Wayne, I'm afraid you're profoundly deaf." --- Jason is profoundly deaf. He learns to cope with it.
The premise is exactly what it sounds like, but so much more. The author goes into detail regarding Jasons treatment, how Bruce (isn't) being helpful, and the genuine fear he feels when he's with his family. It's separated into small scenes that connect beautifully. A must read honestly.
We'll Never Get Free (Lamb To The Slaughter) by AquamarineMemeBender
4,286; Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death; Jason Todd & Bruce Wayne, Damian Wayne & Colin Wilkes, Batfamily Members & Jason Todd, Batfamily Members & Bruce Wayne "He keeps throwing kids into his own self destruction and never understands that he'll never be able to save them." "I know," she gasps. "I know. I already know. He didn't save me, he didn't save my mom, he didn't save my best friend or-" "You know," Jason assures her, and rests the end of his gun on her forehead as gently as possible. "He doesn't." Or: Bruce keeps making Robins. Jason keeps killing them.
Very dark, and also relies on the Lazarus Pit. BUT! The pit is used differently here, adding to the surreal horror of this fic. Reading this is like watching a car made of hope, love, and familial trust crash into a brick wall.
Turning Point by Neocolai
4,310; Not Rated; Graphic Depictions Of Violence Hood had one standard as a hired gun — he didn’t shoot kids. The Joker should’ve known better than to involve him, even if the party in question was Bat-trained.
Aaand a fic that is the complete opposite of the last one.
I love seeing how people make Jason the Red Hood without the ‘I am a better Batman’ angle or the bruce daddy issues. This is a solid read.
keep on haunting me by Littlearrows
4,090; Dick Grayson & Jason Todd After his time as a mob boss, Jason opens a private detective agency for Gotham's ghosts, investigating their deaths and helping them find justice. A case leads him to getting justice for his own ghost haunting him. (aka a supernatural noir detective AU)
This is a banger noir fic that sprinkles in intriguing worldbuilding, and gives the characters a really cool vibe. Jason feels like a legitimate detective & I could easily imagine this being a slice from a video game.
The Zombie Robin by Penglaive
36,301 Nearly half a year after Jason Todd was murdered by the Joker, Scarecrow launched a plot to delve six feet deeper into the heart of fear. Whether this plot went ultimately right or horribly wrong is a matter of perspective, but everyone involved could agree it went weird quickly, even by Gotham standards.
Jason must deal with his unknown zombie status in this fic, and it has more depth than you might imagine. Penglaive strikes a nice tonal balance between serious and lighthearted, switching perspectives giving context to the greater impact of Jason's return. This one is uberly underrated.
~~~
Sooo that’s my list. Obviously there are a lot more fics that fit these tropes, but this is just a cheese platter of different Jason Todds......
Tumblr media
ANYWAYS I hope you enjoy these hidden teasures, like ken.
Ken out 😘

In re: the Snape music conversation
I’ve been thinking about this a lot in relation to my own Snape fic I’ve been writing, and I 100% agree that Snape is a masochist who would permit himself little enjoyment, especially while Voldemort is active.
However, I’ve been trying to picture how Snape would react if he lived post-DH and was allowed to (read: forced to by others) heal, and I feel like, for someone whose life depended on keeping himself so tightly contained, poetry would be most effective. Typical of Snape, it would not be “enjoyment” he would gain from it so much as it would be pain he could appreciate, alone. I think, if someone could point him in the right direction, he would be inclined to the modernists - T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, anyone writing in the aftermath of WW1 - and also Sylvia Plath. Lady Lazarus, in particular screams Snape to me: “Dying is an art/Like everything else/I do it exceptionally well/I do it so it feels like hell”
With all that said, for some reason I’ve always loved the image of him and Harriet vibing to Alanis Morissette somewhere, so do with that what you will lol.
Thank you so much for creating this world that is so rewarding to think about! I’ll have to do a reread soon.
it's a very interesting question! poetry is as difficult as music, i think, and for a similar reason -- it's about this private emotional response and just being in touch with the experience. with music you appreciate the sounds and with poetry, the language and images it inspires.
and just as with music, i can't imagine what poetry he'd like... it's definitely another layer of "my own experience and preferences are inseparable from this." since poetry is a very personal experience, whenever i try to match him to a poem or poet, it just winds up being "poetry i like" and my answer is either "he would not be into this" or "i think i'm only imagining him being into this because i am." like, i absolutely love the romantics, and nature poetry in general. i can't imagine snape thinking, "yeah william blake is where it's at." more likely: "i can't stand this weirdo."
the modernist poetry and the aftermath of the first world war is an interesting idea! i picture him as being irritated by the fragmented narratives of modernism lmao. but at the same time, he could find solace in this sort of confused emptiness.
i can much more easily picture him reading depressing books :) but i don't imagine him as having a favorite book. i don't think he'd read like that. it would just be an intellectual exercise, and/or a way of sublimating his misery. if he's feeling wild, he'll read one of those jacobean tragedies with poisoned bibles or something. (note: i have not actually read this play, i just know about it.)
harriet, reading it so they'll have something to talk about: hey what the fuck?
snape: i have loads more where that came from.

New(ish) Comics Day
Action Comics #1051: awww Superfam hangs. Also seeing the context of the Warworld costume in the cupboard page is EVEN FUNNIER. This is not just ‘Jon discovers his parents’ healthy roleplay sex life’ it’s ‘Jon encounters this SURROUNDED BY MANY FAMILY MEMBERS’.
In terms of both the twins and a whole flashback story about Young Jon - I’m just spitballing here, I’m not fully across modern Superfam, but I’m somehow getting the impression that various writers think the Jon age up was not good? A mystery, I know.
I still don't fully understand what's going on with PeeGee but I guess reading this will give me more context as we go.
Lazarus Planet: We Once Were Gods #1: I am reading this tie-in entirely as it apparently rolls into more Shazamily stuff. On this basis (as it's a lot of vignettes) I am thus experiencing classic comics "wtf is going on" confusion. Particularly around the Aquafam story.
Anyway I remain DELIGHTED that Hoppy is apparently now back full time as a Shazam character because leaning into the kid-friendly nonsense always works well for their stories.
Tumblr media
Warlord #8: it's Mike Grell time! Today in Skartaris we have flown holding onto pterodactyls to an Atlantean island floating in the sky inhabited with robots. As you do. Also we have more slavery references: "Robots! Sort of...man-made slaves!" "All slaves are man-made, Morgan!" plus there's a *checks notes* cannibal cyborg.
Truly it's amazing how many incidents can get packed into a single 17 page Warlord issue.

The Others- Headcannon for a story I'm writing
Ok so I am a little nervous about actually posting any of my writings on here. But I figured I'd give it a shot and see what you guys think? So this is gonna be just a preview into a newish species I have for the DC universe where my oc is and such. It will take place in the DC universe within Gotham so of course the Batfam will be involved as well. There will be reference to canon events but I will alter them a bit. At this point I'm rambling... So here is the backstory??
A class of humans referred to as the OTHERS, scientific name Homo Magi (they are an actually thing in the DC universe but I wanted to add my own spin to it) They are different than humans and metas which are an evolution of the homo sapien line. They exist as humans that can access magic or have latent magical abilities. They would be closer to Fae or magical beings of legends
But because they are different than humans and metas they aren't offered the same level of protection in the eyes of the laws. Mostly because those that know about them are few and far between as the majority of them have either been hunted to extinction or were captured and used for there magic.
The ones who were successful in hiding their magic were able to integrate into human society and become a little more that fairy tales and legend to modern humans.
A key thing with them was that their magic had to be awakened before they reached adulthood at 21 years of age otherwise it would be much weaker and harden to awaken. The way for the power to awaken was different for every individual but would most often happen during an event of strong emotions or danger. Before they went into hiding they underwent a controlled trial that would aide them in awakening their power without putting them in a life threatening situation.
One of the last leaders of the Others was proficient in Curse magic and to protect the descendants of Others locked away the knowledge of their species, traditions, and abilities to only be accessed by those of the Other bloodline once they unlocked their magic. Those with this knowledge are able to identify Others on sight.
In this headcannon Zatara, Zatanna, Constantine, and Ra's Al Ghul are all awakened Others.
Zatara - would be classified as having Showman magic where the larger the audience he is performing for the more powerful he is. He awakened after reaching adulthood. And having his daughter, he was able to preform the ritual for Zatanna so she was able to unlock her full magical ability.
Zatanna- would be classified as having Word magic being able to use her words to direct her magic otherwise known as spellcasting. Was awakened at the age of 14 after a test and trial by her father.
Constantine - would be classified as having White magic, or being proficient in the white arts. Specializing in contract magic and knowledge of the occult. He awakened his magic when he received a blood transfusion from the demon Nergal right before his 21st birthday. (that is a canon event but I am changing the when)
Ra's Al Ghul - would be classified as having knowledge magic or the innate knowledge of all magical artifacts and their uses (how he knew about the Lazarus pits) As well as Genius level intellect, and ability to utilize alchemy.
Please comment or message me if you would like to read more!!!!

3, 5, 8, 9 for the ask game?
3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?
It's a fic I wrote for a Dark Fic Bang for the Supernatural Fandom. It's definitely a Dead Dove fic, and it was a ton of fun to write:
Lust
5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?
At one point when I was in a particularly bad place mentally, I had an idea about a Mass Effect fic in which Project Lazarus brought back a trans masc Shepard in his pre-transition body. I will never write it because I specifically don't like to write about trans trauma. It's just one of those things that is too much for me mentally and emotionally.
8. What project(s) are you currently working on?
I am currently working on three Mass Effect WIPs: Argonauts, Couldn't Utter My Love, and The Ties That Bind. Argonauts is a canon novelization for my OC Shepard Alex, Couldn't Utter My Love is an AU where I decided to smoosh my two blorbos (Alex and Jackson) together, and The Ties That Bind is a modern vampire AU in which Alex Shepard is a quarter-fae vampire hunter, and Kaidan Alenko is a vampire that unknowingly holds the secret to Alex's freedom.
9. Do you write every day? If you wrote today, share a sentence of what you’ve written!
I don't write every day. Sometimes when I am really rolling on something, I will write for several days in a row, but generally speaking I write a few days a week. I have other creative projects I am working on, plus a whole life and other hobbies outside of fanfic, and rather than throwing my whole self at just writing (because that's part of why I burnt out so hard and didn't write at all for so long), I am trying to be better about doing many things I love.

Four Score and Seven Lightyears Ago: Historic Figures in Star Trek
By Ames
Tumblr media
Between escapades on the holodeck, visits to the past, and general sci-fi shenanigans, Star Trek has been able to present many historic figures to its crews, to varying effects. They’ve been doing it from the very beginning, though newer Trek series somehow haven’t seemed to have picked up on the game yet. Perhaps mentioning Elon Musk in an episode of Discovery soured them on the idea of bringing real people out into the universe: they’ll only find a way to let you down.
So what do the great minds of history have to offer to the weird and advanced worlds of the future? How frequently is the episode awkward, uncomfortable, or just plain annoying? Whose portrayal doesn’t stand up to the test of time? Check out all the ones we here at A Star to Steer Her By could think of below and listen to our chatter on this week’s podcast episode (discussion starts at 1:11:33). Watch out for falling apples!
[Images © CBS / Paramount]
Tumblr media
Jack the Ripper - “Wolf in the Fold”
We forgot to bring this one up on the podcast, but here we remembered to include the alien lifeform that inhabited people throughout history to harvest fear from its victims, at one point using the body of Jack the Ripper. This is absolutely nothing new. The list of Jack the Ripper appearances in modern media is longer than my arm and it’s so overdone that I just gloss over this episode entirely. Redjac is an alien now? Meh. Add it to the Ripper fanfic list.
Tumblr media
Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil Earp and Doc Holliday - “Spectre of the Gun”
By season 3 The Original Series writers had a history book constantly open to look up a whole bunch of figures from the past, starting with an incredibly erroneous telling of the gunfight at the OK Corral. The whole ordeal is through the lens of an alien reading Kirk’s inaccurate memories, so perhaps any falsehoods are to be forgiven. Given the budget for season three, the sets were pretty much plywood, but the actors playing the Earps and Doc Holliday actually looked pretty good!
Tumblr media
Flint - “Requiem for Methuselah”
This one’s kind of a strange one, since the character Flint purportedly lived long enough to live out the lives of many famous figures, some actual and some fictional for some reason. The list he gives includes Methuselah, King Solomon, Alexander the Great, Lazarus, Merlin, Leonardo da Vinci, and Johannes Brahms. You’re a strange dude, Flint. I really don’t know what to make of this guy since it’s almost an interesting idea to have such a long-lived character, but once you start throwing wizards into the mix, I’m taken entirely out of it.
Tumblr media
Abraham Lincoln - “The Savage Curtain”
When Abe Lincoln appears floating in space, it’s laugh-out-loud funny. The Original Series could get away with campy hijinks the way no other Trek series can anymore, even including Lower Decks. The rest of “The Savage Curtain” is convoluted and pointless as hell (there’s a reason it’s on some of our Bottom Five lists from the whole series), but the parts featuring playing gladiator with Lincoln were a harmless enough romp.
Tumblr media
Genghis Khan - “The Savage Curtain”
Also featured alongside Lincoln was Genghis Khan, and let’s just say it was a good thing the character had absolutely no lines or it might have gotten cringey. His inclusion in the first place was borderline as it was, but it wasn’t a good episode in the first place, so what were we really hoping for out of season three of TOS? Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure did all of this better, I’ll leave it at that.
Tumblr media
Albert Einstein - “The Nth Degree”
Jump to TNG and a lot of our guest figures from the slate of history appear to us on the holodeck, which is probably a decent venue for them. Better than most, when you think about it, since our Starfleet friends are usually visiting them for a purpose that is substantive to the episode, and also everyone accepts that hologram depictions are going to be fairly superficial. So it goes that Barclay seeking out the program of Albert Einstein makes perfect sense in the episode. This isn’t the last we’ll see of the Einstein holo either, as we’ll see…
Tumblr media
Jack London - “Time’s Arrow”
Oh boy, this is one of my least favorite TNG episodes and it’s mostly down to our two guest figures being so caricaturey and plot convenient. The first we come across in our time travel adventure is the young valet Jack, who just seems like a miscreant throughout the two-parter and who rubs your SSHB hosts particularly the wrong way immediately. Then the very very buttony “Remember the name Jack London” happens and everyone watching rolls their eyes so hard that we all topple over from the sheer inanity of it. Ugh!
Tumblr media
Samuel Clemens - “Time’s Arrow”
In these two episodes, is Jack London better or worse than Sam Clemens? That may be a matter of how well you can stand the intense overacting and obnoxiousness of the portrayal. In my write up for season 6 of TNG, I screamed “What the hell is Mark Twain doing here” into the void for what felt like days because his character had no motivation for doing any of the things the writers needed him to do in order to stick around. And boy did he ever stick around! He stuck around so much while not contributing anything except someone to deliver exposition at, which could have been some fictional person! So what the hell was Mark Twain doing here!?!?
Tumblr media
Stephen Hawking - “Descent”
As we move through TNG episodes, we go from one of my least favorite portrayals to one of my favorites. The late Stephen Hawking remains the only actual person to play themself on Star Trek, and if that ever changes, I’ll feel disappointed because I can’t think of anyone else who is anywhere as deserving. The little joke that Hawking added himself is quite cute, and it just sounds like it was a delightful day to have Einstein, Newton (whom we’ll see again in a second), and Hawking playing poker on the holodeck with Data.
Tumblr media
Sigmund Freud - “Phantasms”
Having Data go to a recreation of Freud’s couch when he’s looking for someone to interpret his dreams is a bit of a goofy premise, but it seems in character enough. When holo-Freud starts spewing all the normal Oedipal psychosexual claptrap at him, it’s a bit humorous, if a bit on the nose, but we accept this one because Data’s innocence and naivete are such a good counterbalance. The scene plays a little on the obvious side, but what can you do? The cigar is a penis.
Tumblr media
Amelia Earhart - “The 37s”
If you’ve been following along with our watch through Voyager, you’ll know this one struck a rather bad chord with us. Earhart is the only female figure on this list, which is saying enough in and of itself, but for the whole of “The 37s” it felt like her name was getting dragged around through history. It’s not as bad as the Jack the Ripper fanfic parade, but it just strikes me as bad taste to use Earhart’s legacy for a pretty cheap alien abduction gag and to have her navigator Fred Noonan canonically be in love with her. Vom.
Tumblr media
Isaac Newton - “Death Wish”
Quinn claims that he’s the one that shook the apple tree that brought about Newton’s gravity epiphany. It’s another bit of an eye-rolling joke, made all the more groanworthy since it was already made clear in Newton’s appearance in “Descent” that the apple story was entirely apocryphal. Sigh. Other than that, Newton’s testimony is part of a very fascinating discussion of what will become of Quinn if he leaves the Q Continuum by killing himself, and who ever knows when the Qs are overembellishing stories for dramatic effect anyway (hint: it’s all the time)?
Tumblr media
Socrates, Lord Byron, and Gandhi - “Darkling”
We had pretty mixed feelings of the Doctor going all Mr. Hyde during “Darking” but it does stand to reason that he’d look to various historic figures for personality traits to give himself. Byron and Gandhi’s shallow conversation about men cavorting with women was on the silly side, but this is the holodeck after all, where all the people are pretty much one-note.
Tumblr media
The pièce de résistance of the holodeck scenes in this episode is when the characters are all glitching out randomly, Gandhi’s head is spinning, Byron is getting experimented upon, and Socrates is left a hollow hologram. Now that’s a new philosophy.
Tumblr media
Leonardo da Vinci - “Concerning Flight” et al
We come to the end of our list with one of the most established minds in history… mostly taking up space. The most his character really gets to do on his number of appearances is allow Janeway to talk exposition at someone other than Seven for a change, and then make a lot of jokes about how the hologram doesn’t understand the real world. I was frankly tired by it. Later on, Lower Decks makes some references to the da Vinci hologram, because of course it does.
Computer, end program! Did you spot any other historical figures from our Trek watch? Well, put them in cryo and send them our way because we’re moving on to more blogtivities next week. Keep watching this spot for more, keep up with our voyage through Voyager on SoundCloud or wherever you get your podcasts, say hi on Facebook and Twitter, and in the words of Honest Abe: be excellent to each other.

COMMENTARY:
When I was in Vietnam I participated in a blister check of my platoon with my medics once when We came out of the woods for a stand down. It was the time I had my platoon in the rear where we could safely conduct such a disarmament, That particular day, two of my medics were present and we each had a bowl and towels and a liquid fungicide and I ran my hands over the feet of ten or so guys the check their condition,
I am sure this literally happened, as John described it, In the case of Jesus, He was able to condition his Disciple's feet for the long march they had ahead of them, It's echoed in the discription of Jesus in Revelation, If you view Jesus as a Green Beret bringing an indigenous A Team up to speed, like the Irish Sergeant Major in Glory, the totality of His leadership model becomes transparent.
This is what Servant Leadership looks like. The "suffering servant leadership" motif is the Total Depravity Gospel of Pro-Life Calvinism, The Mission, Men, Self ethic of the Servant Leadership model of The Liberation Model isn't about suffering, but serving and every day is another day in Paradise.
The Gospel of John is the memoir of Jesus composed by John Mark's experience with Jesus beginning when he was 12 years old in Passover, 30 CE, John Mark would become the Saint Mark of Alexandria and the publisher of what we call The Gospel of Mark, There are four Passovers in John and the narrative is intended to be complimentary to the Gospel of Mark, The Narrative of John 3 - 6 and Mark 6 converge, when John Mark travels with Jesus and the Disciples for 6 months between the Autumnal Equinox and Vernal Equinox, including the feeding of the 5000, and converge again at John 11 and Mark 11: Lazarus is raised on Palm Sunday. John's version of the Last Supper is intended to expand Mark's version and adds the horse radish of Passover missing from the Synoptic gospels.
The coincidences reflect the organic harmonization of the Gospels and Acts. Most of what "Giggles" Ehrman refers to as contradictions are actually paradox characteristic of Hegel's Historic Gestalt The combination of Jark and John are metaphysically reliable history, as a minor and subordinate genre of literature.
Dr. Tripp's complaint regarding undesigned coincidences is based on his Fan Theory of John, Much of the undesigned coincidence in the Gospel is like "Giggles" Ehrman's :contradictions: arising from the Marxist dialectic of the Post Modern Historic Deconstruction: when you de=harmonize an organic harmonics of the Gospels devolves to contradiction,
Jimmy Tabor's axiom that Harmonization is the enemy of the Truth: is characteristic of the subversive disinformation of the 60s anti-draft Teach-Ins model of the Gospel of those who were scared shitless of going to Vietnam
Here is what could be considered an undesigned coincidence is the doubling of the weeping in John 11 and Mark 14: both are the consequence of the operation of the Holy Spirit with the doubling of undesigned coincidence in the narrative, the coincidence of the salutations of Martha and Mary when Jesus arrives in Bethany after the Triumphal Entry and the coincidence of the crow of the cock in Mark 14. this is a double doubling by the Holy Spirit that advises the Narrative of the Last Supper be intertwined between mark and John: it was John's wrote his memoir,
Quit straining at gnats.

*Real Dating App Experiences.* "The Historian."
Man Age 36, likes: Ambition, Philosophy, intelligence & Hip Hop.
Me age 22, likes: Genealogy, History, Theology, Writing, Cleaning.
Man: I'm into tech, history, science. I see on your dating profile your into genealogy. would you like an interesting rabbit hole to get stuck down?
Me: Well I have a few already but I'm always open to hearing more.
Man: I'm not a super religious person but looking into how Jesus of Nazareth, Mary Magdalene and Peter the great were actually the children of Cleopatra the 7th featuring Julius Caesar 😉 it's a good one. And is ridiculously fascinating to ponder on.
Me:
Tumblr media
I AM NOT A HISTORIAN NOR PRETEND TO BE it's just- Sir....there's a lot to unpack here but...here's something for certain-
Jesus of Nazareth, Mary of Magdala and Peter the Great were most definitely not the children of Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator OR Gaius Julius Caesar. And there's enough sources to prove this...
Jesus of Nazareth who is the known religious prophet figure in Christianity was born to Mary of Nazareth (Whether it was a virgin birth is for you to debate.) Mary's alleged parental genealogy has been written down by Mark (one of Jesus Disciples) all the way back to King David of the ancient United Kingdom of Israel (Not the same as Modern day Palestine- also ceasefire!!! and free Palestine!!! 🇵🇸) - Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator & Gaius Julius Caesar died roughly 30 years before Jesus was born.
Mary of Magdala was the written and mentioned female disciple of Jesus. It is theorised that her father was named Cyrus, and her mother Eucharis. She and her brother Lazarus, and her sister Martha, possessed the castle of Magdalo - but this has also confused her with Mary of Bethany who also had a sister named Martha. - Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator & Gaius Julius Caesar would have had to have died roughly 30 years before Mary was born too because she is considered younger than Jesus by some sources.
Peter the Great...was the Tsar of Russia...born 9 June 1672 and died 8 February 1725. *Crickets* Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator & Gaius Julius Caesar died roughly...1700ish years before Peter's birth (Peter was actually the documented son of Alexis of Russia and Natalya Naryshkina)
So, let's assume my dating app man was referring to Alexander The Great. But even then that doesn't make any lick of sense to be the son of Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator OR Gaius Julius Caesar. Considering he died roughly 3 centuries before their birth. 😵‍💫 Cleopatra allegedly named her second born son Alexander Helios after Alexander the Great.

Retro programming
Tumblr media
So, I am a fan of programming with Basic and Pascal. And it was a times, when I saw and a little try to program in MSX KUVT2, QBasic, Turbo Pascal, Visual Basic 6, Delphi 7. But in those days, mainly, I can write several commands. And a rather simple programs to write. Not more. And I have a very positive memories with this soft.
Tumblr media
And, one moment, during education, I like a lot course of Turbo Pascal, Delphi. It was my fav subject. And while I hate math. It was all the time too hard. And this style of programming I like a lot. And it is a pity that programming was ended with it starting course.
Visual Basic 6 I can remember with big pleasure. And I was going for some courses even. It was interesting. And I even wrote some game with walking by pictures.
Tumblr media
And, looks like, I like those things a lot. And I have a warm memory. And I disagree with position, that they are old. Basic, Pascal, Visual Basic, Delphi – it is a coolest soft. Coolest programming languages and even for today, I think.
You can learn programming with them, you can learn how make a logic mind, write simple programs, make games. You can dig retro programming, learn more about retro theme. So, it is a standalone theme, saying one word. I while I can try to use this thing even today, by my personal point of interest.
Tumblr media
Today, there are, possibilities, to have a modern analogues. They supported by their authors. And projects are in developing state.
So here they are modern versions of IDE:
QB64 – Modern version for Basic programming
Free Pascal – analogue to Turbo Pascal.
Pascal ABC – Pascal with Russian language support, there is version with support NET
Lazarus – modern version of Delphi with built in free pascal programming
Tumblr media
And there is one more. Not so new. It is Dark Basic. I guess, it is not supported by authors. I never try it yet.
Dark Basic – as I get it, it is something like Visual Basic with support of graphics for videogames. I never try it.
Tumblr media
It is about modern solutions. All of them are modern and support by developers. Today. Except Dark Basic. I never try it yet. I don’t know, for sure. But it is going here as some variation for Visual Basic here.
Tumblr media
And I can say that if you have old computer, then you can install there classic like Visual Studio 6 or 97. With such components like Visual Basic 6, Visual C. Or Delhi 7. Turbo Pascal.
In result, retro rules!
Dima Link is making retro videogames, apps, a little of music, and some retro more.

Raising of Lazarus
Scriptures:  Ezekiel 37:1-14; Ps. 130; Rm 8:6-11; Jn 11:1-45
We are drawing near the climax of the Lenten season, and the gospels get longer and more intense as we prepare for the last week of Jesus' journey to the cross. The scriptures raise many great questions that continue to reveal God's awesomeness.
Ezekiel's vision of the Valley of Dry Bones is inconceivable. Ezekiel lived in exile in Babylon in 597-587 B.C. The Babylonian army had captured Israel (2 Kings 24:10-16), and for several years, Israel was "dead" as a nation, deprived of her land, her king, and her temple. She had been divided and dispersed for so long that unification and restoration seemed impossible. The people were living dead, pining away with no end to their judgment in sight. They wondered if God could hear their prayers so far away from home. In Chapter 36, Ezekiel prophesied to them to assure them - that God has not abandoned them. In Chapter 37, we hear how God transported Ezekiel in a vision to a valley full of dry bones. This vision symbolizes the whole house of Israel in captivity. The idea is to show Ezekiel that God is present– and will bring them home!
It would help to have a vibrant imagination to catch Ezekiel's vision story. So, imagine a long stretch of an arid valley – all you see is a multitude of human bones – dry bones. Then the question to you is – "Mortal, can these bones live?" How would you answer? Be careful because your answer may affirm or betray your faith. To say yes means you trust and believe that God can resurrect the dead; He will put his Spirit within dead and dry bones, and they shall live again.
And, if God has the power to bring a "multitude of dry bones" to life, it's no surprise that the Son likewise can. Lazarus had been dead for four days when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. For his disciples and friends, time was of the essence. But Jesus was not working in man's time, and we don't understand his worldview. However, his perspective enabled him to tell the disciples, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him."
Awaken him up? An outsider hearing Jesus' remark might even have said the first-century equivalent of "What planet is he from?" Jesus' behavior in delaying seems heartless (in our eyes), given that Lazarus was his friend. And when he arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has been dead and buried for four days. He joins Mary and Martha and 'the Jews' in their grief, even to the point of weeping. But then, he goes to the grave site and calls Lazarus from the grave; the man emerges, fully resurrected.
Questions - Did Jesus know that he would raise Lazarus? If so, why did he weep? The questions are many, but since WE know how things ended, we can say, 'but of course, he knew,' and he wept because the Son of Man is full of compassion, so he cried alongside the mourners – showing his human side.
At the question of why he was four days late? His answer was, "… it's for the glory of God so that God's Son can be glorified through it." Sounds familiar? Jesus gave the same answer to the disciples before he gave new eyes to the man born blind - to explain that God is present even in our tragedy – even when we feel our bones are dry – meaning when we think we have reached the end of the rope and there's nothing left. Let's bring this home:
A Norwegian fisherman and his two sons set out for a day of fishing as they had done hundreds of times. This was before modern navigation instruments, and a heavy fog rolled in on this day, obscuring the coastline. And then darkness fell, and a fierce storm threatened.
            Meanwhile, back home, the fisherman's wife faced a trouble of her own. A fire ignited in her kitchen, and before help could arrive, the home was engulfed in flames. As the wife sobbed outside the smoldering ruins of her home, her husband and sons came. She turned to her husband and said, "Everything is lost!"
            "Not everything," he replied. "An hour ago, our sons and I were lost at sea. Then we saw a small light through the fog and headed for it. The light grew brighter and guided us home. It was our house aflame. You see - The same fire that destroyed our home also saved our lives."
            From the fisherman's perspective, the house fire had a different meaning. It left them with some problems, but because of it, the things that mattered were okay.
            There are a lot of remarkable stories like this – personal or otherwise – that reveal God's constant presence and sovereignty. But there are also many questions we cannot answer or may never understand. However, in trust, we can set our minds on the Spirit and be content knowing that whatever the outcome, God's Spirit is at work to make things right and satisfying on our behalf.
You see - the absolute marvel of the Valley of the Dry Bones and Lazarus' story is not only the mystery that God and Jesus can restore the dead to life, but it gives a sign that God can provide a life impervious to death. Both scriptures are theological symbolism; they show us the depth of God's might; they confirm that God can change things around by his might. And when it comes to His love, there's no doubt; he offered His Son on our behalf so that we might live. And even now, Jesus pleads for us at his Father's right hand. Amen!

I know many of you (my family, friends, FB friends, and acquaintances) have come to see theater productions I've been involved with in the past. Thank you for your encouragement and support over the years. Now I encourage you to come see this new production. I know you'll be very blessed. My good friend, Troy Ferguson, wrote it and is directing, and I've been involved with producing it as well (editing, auditions, directing drama, and am acting, and singing too) (I've been busy) We have a great cast from multiple churches of differing denominations in Blair County. I love the unity and I'm pleased by how it is all coming together. I'm also excited to be at the historic Mishler Theater, downtown Altoona, a first for us. It's been nearly ten years since we've produced a musical production and through the years many have encouraged us to do it again. One of them, my friend Jan Mills, if he were still with us, would be so excited and would be bringing in bus loads to see it. If this is a box office success, which I'm actually hoping we sell out, I can see it becoming an annual event again. Bring friends and family and those you know who don't know Christ as Lord. This is a great opportunity to minister to them. I know the Spirit of God will touch their hearts, and yours too. I hope to see you there. "IN JESUS' NAME, presented by Joy In The City and multiple churches from our community, is a musical production that parallels a modern-day story of a teenage girl battling anxiety, a teacher who mentors her through this struggle; and the story of Martha, sister to Lazarus as she also confronts issues of anxiety and comes to freedom through experiencing the passion story of Jesus Christ. The production will entertain you through comedy, drama and music, but more importantly, will impact you emotionally and spiritually as you experience the journey of these two characters." Cost is $13 per ticket, $10 + $3 ticket fee. If you order online below there is also a $2 processing fee per order. http://mishlertheatre.vbotickets.com/event/in_jesus_name/91721 https://www.instagram.com/p/CpdBz23u2H3Qstc5mD8b9FlSU-wTqcF-sdLOMI0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
