I'm sorry but the more I think about the Rebirth ending the more I love it actually like. The whole trilogy has been a meta commentary of sorts and, specially, Aerith's death is at the epicenter of it. She both dies and doesn't die exactly because us, as an audience, want both things to happen.
People have been clamoring to be able to save Aerith since 1997, there were fake hidden hacks, AU fictions, retellings, everything. Everyone has been at Squeenix's doorsteps begging them to let us save her. Like, it's at a point where the "Square will let us save Aerith if you pay for the DLC" joke is much more than a decade old.
On the other side, there's this very expressive unwant for any change whatsoever from the source material. It's not a feeling that is exclusive to FF7 either, there's this very clear pushback against any new remake/adaptation that deviates, even slightly, from it's original. People don't want new content, they want the old one they experienced when they were younger, but prettier, they want to both feel the nostalgia and experience everything as if for the first time again.
From that camp, I think the most prominent argument is that FF7 is about loss, right? And they're not wrong. Aerith's death is the crux of the story, it's the very thing that made FF7 as known as it is, there would be no actual weight to what it's trying to tell if the heroine doesn't die in the middle of it, an unexpected, hurtful, avoidable death. What's the point of a narrative about grief if you can just... avoid losing someone? Avoid having it be cruelly taken from you?
And yet, you see, if want someone to die, if you want something to be taken from you, are you really losing it? In the original, part of the impact was that no one could see it coming, it was a straight representation about how death is sudden and takes away opportunity from you. Aerith doesn't go into the sleeping forest willing to make a sacrifice for the greater good, she has barely started her adventure, she makes a promise to go on the highwind, the group is one location away from finding out more about her ancestry and her family.
That's not true for the remake, tho. Everyone knows about her fate, about what is going to happen to her. That's probably the most spoiled moment in video game history. I personally knew about her death before I truly understood what Final Fantasy even was. So now we have an audience that is extremely aware of what, when and how her death is going to happen. That's why the Confluence of Worlds is put at that moment, because it's the single most expected moment in the entire triology, it's the one moment that made the narrative resonate so well.
The impact is impossible to recreate now, even for newer fans of the series. People want a 1:1 retranslation but such a thing would always be a gimmicky shadow of it's original. It's why the focus shifts, now the most emotionally impactful scene is not the killing of her but of her goodbye, in the church after the dream date. "Thank you," Aerith echoes "It's been fun", a callback to her conclusion on Remake where she says "I'm grateful for all the words we shared. All the moments and the memories. You've made me more happy than you know."
So she dies and she doesn't, both at the same time. Effectively in limbo now, narratively explained by lifestream shenaningans. We put her there ourselves, by refusing to move on, refusing to accept her death but also refusing to change, allowing a different outcome. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, at least, Aerith's words sound like the very sincere feelings of the developers, who are grateful for all the love we all have powered into their work all these years.
I just love it so much, I could spend hours talking about it.

Sometimes the Wallpaper is Just Yellow: A Heartslabyul Color Analysis
Tumblr media
This research was inspired by this post by @mothman-files! I am so sorry for @ing you please let me know if you want me to remove it and I will do so ASAP. Thank you for sending my head into a tail spin, I've learned a lot of stuff.
After reading mothman's musings, you might be thinking to yourself like I did: "hey, there is something familiar about red, blue, yellow, and green color coding." And it is, as mothman correctly points out in the notes of their post it is an extremely common trope in anime. The reason was both exactly and not not at all what I expected after I resurfaced from this little detour I took from fic writing.
How well do you know the colors of your oni? Because that's more important than card suits for this particular trope, but to make it all make sense I am going to go through each of the Heartslabyul boys one by one saving Cater for last. With that being said, pack your bags and grab some beans we are going to learn some meditation techniques.
Setsubun and the Beaning of Life
Tumblr media
No seriously. It all relates back to beans. As a refresher for those unaware, Setsubun is a Japanese festival celebrated at the start February, the day before spring starts on the Japanese Lunar calendar. It is typically part of Lunar New Year celebrations today, and if you know anything about it from anime you probably know that it's that holiday where the Japanese throw beans at demons to chase them away so they can start the new year without their evil influences. What kind of evil influences? Well according to Buddhist belief there are five main ones that are referred to as the five hindrances: sensory desire (i.e. greed), ill-will (i.e. anger), disquietude (i.e. anxiety), sloth (i.e. unable to make decisions), and doubt (i.e. self explanatory).
Now why is this all relevant? Well I saw it repeated again and again, on some articles about Setsuban that the oni who appear during the festival are COLOR CODED and fucking finally thanks to this beautiful, beautiful person called Matthew Meyer (the Yokai Guy) on Patreon of all places! I found out why. Because a professor of History named Yagi Tōru said so and I am inclined to believe as he is the president of the World Oni Study Society! Which is a thing! And he has written textbooks?!?! I get that this might be a tangent but it is important to me you understand I am not pulling this out of my ass, there is scholarship on this I am not lying to you. So what are those colors?
Red Oni (Greed) Blue Oni (Anger)
Tumblr media
The only reason I even tried looking at this angle was because of these two. Everyone say thank you to Aduece. You might have heard "the Red Oni Who Cried" folktale in an anime or two (My Love Story is the first that comes to mind for me) and it is thought to have spawned a sort of character trope in anime. There's a hot headed red coded character and their intellectual blue bestie, or maybe they're twins (FFXIV and Tokyo Rev jump to mind), one of them jumps first and the other asks all sorts of questions, both now and later. When I first saw Aduece I thought they were a clever twist on that trope because they're both trying to fit those color molds but... aren't really making it.
Ace wants to portray himself as an easygoing guy who doesn't think too much about things, but we know that's not true. He is extremely smart, he just refuses to put in maximum effort unless forced. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to classify him as greedy either, but when you are sharing the stage with Azul it can be easy to forget that greed isn't always accompanied by a great work ethic. Ace cheats at cards, makes a deal for a study guide he doesn't need, and sucks up to his senpai's all to make things easier on himself. What he actually needs to do is work bitch and when he does that and only then will he realize his true potential.
Deuce, poor ex-delinquent Deuce. He does think about things before he does them and constantly lectures Ace for just doing whatever he wants without thinking, but he is far from naturally intelligent and prone to outbursts of anger. As soon as he looses his temper, he also looses his rational thought, but he accepts that about himself. That's what allows him to discover his unique magic, he knows he has his own sort of intelligence and is determined to work on what he does not.
Green Oni (Sloth)
Tumblr media
I don't really think it is revolutionary to say Trey is a bit of a slacker when it comes to addressing interpersonal issues. He finds it easier to try and keep the peace or manage the fallout than directly address the problem at hand, and he is resistant to doing additional work not assigned by his housewarden. Or required by the school, just look at how "excited" he was to be a starsender. If he was any more unhinged he would have started throwing hands. Sloth as a sin isn't strictly just about being lazy. Apathy, a lack of reaction towards something like say, your friend's control freak tendencies that is clearly him acting out his own trauma can qualify as sloth.
I would like to add, though, that I don't really think it was Trey's responsibility to tell Riddle he was going overboard. That should have been Crowley's job, but that's another post. For now just take green as a sign of dodging emotions and let's go.
Yellow Oni (Disquietude)
Tumblr media
As pointed out by mothman-files, Cater is supposed to be yellow, but he is more often portrayed with reds and oranges, pinks even, than yellow. Like them, I don't think it is a coincidence he is associated with orange when that's what happens when you mix red and yellow together. Cater is taking on what he perceives to be the identity of his dorm, and he is extremely dissatisfied, disquieted, and anxious because of that.
Something I think should be considered, NRC freshmen are sixteen years old. Cater is a third year, he's spent around two and a half years at NRC, two and a half years that were relatively stable compared to what he tells us about his previous schooling. I think that he has some genuine dissonance in him that is getting harder for him to ignore because he has played this role longer than the ones he has played previously. Cater the Heartslabyul student, the NRC mage, that is who he is now, and I wonder if he knows how he got to this point or if he feels like he just woke up in someone else's body someday and doesn't know if he likes it.
What's worse is I think he does like his friends, and he is suddenly confronted with how little they actually know about him, what could be more anxiety inducing than that.
Black Oni? (Press X to Doubt)
Tumblr media
I don't think Riddle is meant to be the black oni, but I do think it's interesting that the color black is associated with doubt and loss of ones convictions when that is essentially both the cause and color of an overblot. Idia and S.T.Y.X. seem to be focused on emotion + extreme magic use to be what's causing the blot... but the more I roll chapter 7 and all the reading I did for this post around in my head it seems to me that overblots like the ones at NRC seem to be tied to a loss of identity and the shattering of one's perceived reality.
I would also like to mention that I have no idea if any of the cited folklore has anything to do with Yana Toboso's mindset when she created these characters. She seems to be someone who does a lot of research and thinks deeply about symbolism, but this color coding and its associated vices can be found in a lot of anime. She could have just picked up on it from that.
I hope you found this descent into madness informative, and if not at least entertaining. Thank you for your time, I am going to go eat a cookie.
Semi Unrelated Fun Facts:
A lot of this brainrot was inspired by Amnesia, as I stated in a post I already made, but I also was thinking about the song YELLOW by Yoh Kamiyama which I don't fully understand the meaning of, but think it is supposedly about being trapped in a false reality from some of the things I've read.
Back to Amnesia, the yellow diamond in that Visual Novel (I haven't watched the anime adaptation because they did my man Kieth dirty) is the yandere route. Which made me start to think about how often yellow is used as a color for characters with identity issues, like Sailor Venus from Sailor Moon and Amu from Sugo Chara! and led to... this mess
According to this thing I found while trying to look for the professor Yagi Tōru he has a son who is a male voice actor???? I don't have time to look this up someone else do it please.
Please check out the Yokai Guy. You can join his patreon for free, his art is lovely and he saved my sanity. I cannot read Japanese so I almost didn't bother saying anything about this because I knew I wouldn't be able to provide an academic source for it, and that's important to me as someone who has a love of history. Also he has a kick-starter up for an illustrated book of folklore, did I mention his art is lovely?
And lastly a lovely hello to @somany-fandoms-solittle-time who kindly asked to be tagged in this post (つ≧▽≦)つ I hope you liked it.

2022 BL ROUNDUP PART 5
Hey y'all, I've seen everyone doing their top 22, 20, 15, 10, and 5 BLs of the year and I didn't want to do a ranking! I just want to do a quick rundown of everything I watched and how I feel about it now! This is gonna be multiple posts! But I'll post them all at the same time.
LAST PART
Thai BLs I watched in 2022 that I loved
KinnPorsche the Series. Saved my summer! It was the most exciting series I've watched all year. Toxic ships never sailed so well and so far. I loved the action, the drama, the lies, the deceit, the mystery, and the raunchiness. 10/10. BUT I DON'T WANT S2 IF THEY'RE GOING TO CONTINUE WORKING WITH THE WRITERS OF THE NOVEL! THAT AMAZING CAST DESERVES THE WORLD!
Tumblr media
Love in the Air. PAYURAIN FTW. PRAPAISKY FTW! I'm still thinking about my boys to this day. I loved our little weather boys. I loved both couples a lot, PayuRain a bit more. I love how different both storylines were and how they tied together. The chemistry between both pairs was *chef's kiss* we were given such an amazing cast. I hope to get more FortPeat and BossNoeul in 2022.
Tumblr media
Secret Crush on You. A mess of a series and yet so well written. I think next to Not Me and the Eclipse, it was the most socially relevant series I've watched this year. They focused on a lot of real life issues that not only queer people deal with but also young people. The amount of green flag characters in this one series was astounding. If you can get past how over the top Toh was in ep 1 then the rest of the series is a treat.
Tumblr media
Triage. Oh my gawd. What an exciting series. It's the BL version of the Butterfly Effect. I didn't think they would be able to properly showcase Tin and Tol falling in love because of the small amount of time covered in the actual time loops but gotdamn they did that. It was such a great watch, had me on the edge of my seat til the very end. Also I was not expecting a TaeTee series after OG 2moons played us.
Tumblr media
My Ride. It was just a wholesome series. Both mains were just literally great people and green flags all around. It was a sweet strangers to friends to lovers series. The slow burn was good. Hated that Tawan had to deal with a cheating boyfriend but Mork was there for him. Loved Mork's uncles, they gave the BEST advice and Mork's moped friends were hilarious. Wish the one guy had a storyline with the Trans woman instead of the actual side couple we got. ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT MORK DECIDING TO GO GET HIS DEGREE TO OPEN HIS OWN GARAGE AT THE END OF THE SERIES?????
Tumblr media
Ghost Host Ghost House. Wasn't expecting to love it so much. Loved the ghost storylines. That family had me CRYING! ESPCIALLY SEE NAM! I WANTED HER TO BE HAPPY WITH PRIM! PRIM LOST SO MUCH! Kevin and Pleum were perfection. Their chemistry was insane and it was clear they vibed the second they met. My friend and I had a discussion about why we think they waited 3 years to reunite and was it necessary. I honestly think they both needed that time to grow, they were both just out of highschool and dealing with death and trying to figure out life. They needed to grow up and let's be real their glow-ups were amazing.
Tumblr media
Big Dragon. Was never expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Yai did annoy me a bit because he was a brat, but he was so cute. I loved Mangkorn a lot. I loved that all of Yai's plans backfired and how his biggest enemy turned into the love of his life. Mangkorn on the other hand was just waiting for the right moment to prove himself to be the best choice for Yai because he was in love with him from the beginning. I'M PRAYING S2 IS NOT ABOUT CHEATING AND JEALOUSY!
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions because they're still ongoing:
Between Us. WINTEAM FTW. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH AND HAVE BEEN WAITING 3 YRS FOR THEM. THE SERIES HAS BEEN DELIVERING FOR ME AND I AM SO THANKFUL FOR IT. 10/10.
Tumblr media
Gap the Series. Not a BL but a GL. Sam and Mon are clearly vibing but Mon thinks she's still idolizing Sam and can't tell she's falling in love. Sam has an overbearing granny and an appointed male finace who she can't stand because he's male. I'm hoping TeeYuki is still a thing because I want them too.

Hi there! I have a question. What do u think abt Keishuk and his relationship with Suwon? Why do some ppl dislike him sm even though he just did his duty and kept loyal to Yuhon who saved and raised him? There are many chars who have the same thought and vibe as him in other stories, but they're respected.
Hi Anon! Thank you for the ask.
Keishuk and Suwon's relationship is one of my favorite in akayona and I could talk about them for hours. What is engaging to me about them is how strange and unique their whole relationship is. Like you know, in other stories I feel like they could easily be more emotionally open with each other and in general closer, but Suwon and Keishuk are just...not. They were both raised by and admired Yuhon and I feel like in another world, in other circumstances they could have been more like brothers, but they're stuck to being doomed coworkers instead. Like I really wish for some development in their relationship eventually (with Suwon and Judo too...) but at the same time, the reason they keep working together is because they trust each other to not be swayed by their feelings and only do what is the best for Kouka, even if it means using themselves as pawns, so. Yeah.
They do feel some kind of way about each other though, a secret thing... and that's what is so endearing to me. One of Suwon's main trait is that he likes everyone, but when it comes to Keishuk (see: the fanbook) he's like "eerrmm...I don't really..." and it's sad but it's so special and unique coming from Suwon it's actually very lovely to me. Keishuk annoys Suwon at times, and he's always on his back and Suwon is not particularly interested in him because Keishuk only and strickly live for his job and is the way he is, yet they sticked together for 10 years and planned the coup together and are still working together. Just like you can say that Hak knows Suwon like no one else, I think it's true of Keishuk as well. Keishuk knows and understands a Suwon not even Hak can grasp and accept. And it's that bond that I love.
Keishuk's feelings for Suwon are also interesting to think about because he is definitely fond of him in some way, but Keishuk's priority is Kouka's prosperity so whenever something happens to Suwon, there is an ambiguity in whether Keishuk reacts strongly because it's Suwon, or because it puts Kouka at a disavantadge(and Suwon obviously assumes it's just the latter). I think the ambiguity is fine as it is and it doesn't need a clear cut answer, as I'm not even sure it is clear cut for Keishuk anyway. But I wonder where things will lead them in the future... Keishuk is said to be emotionless and cold with everyone "but he often scolds Suwon" and to be "strongly attached to Suwon" (both elements are from the fanbook too) so it is undeniable that he's important to him, whether he acts on it or not. They won't comfort each other, sure, but they're partners in crime and I love that for them.
Tumblr media
I think it's true for Suwon and all the generals and not just him and Keishuk but they definitely mirrors the ddhhb found family. Likeee they could be more, but they're not, because with Suwon, Keishuk and the generals it's all about keeping a distance and staying professional. It shows that there is some bond formed in that too, despite the pressure, expectations, betrayals and divides and idk actually it's not deep I just love them your honor they're everything to me and I would read a spin off dedicated to them!!!
Tumblr media
Well all that was only for the first part of your ask (how do you expect me to stay brief about them...I can't, I just can't...) so now for the second part.
As you can see I don't share the vision of the people who dislike him lol. Even though, yeah, it's true that fandoms of other stories can sympathize more with characters like them and it's interesting to try to understand why, in the end it won't change the way it is and I prefer to just engage with them the way I love than to lose any more hair on it. I'd say though, I think I can understand at least for Keishuk, because, well, he's not made to be sympathetic you know? He is, to me, and to you too Anon, and there are elements in the story that give him depth and make him sympathetic in some ways, but most of the time Keishuk is here to annoy people with topics people don't like and that's his role and he carries it willingly. Keishuk carries the bad role for everyone, even for Suwon (that's why it's not this rare to see fans of Suwon who hates Keishuk. It's strange to me but whatever.), he's the man in the shadows taking all the controversial decisions etc etc...That's what I love about him too. But I guess when you're strongly attached to Yona or Hak, the way he tried to kill them and hurt the dragons, now uses them and in general was often rude and cold to them is unlikable. I love when the ddhhb is defied like that personally so I can't relate, but yeah. The story sometimes framing him as stupid and in the wrong for some of his behaviors with them (especially in the castle arc) can explain it too. Like I think the story itself very much encouraged siding more with Yona than him so it's not that surprising that readers follow it. And since Yuhon was also made to show how wrong and monstruous his actions were, it doesn't help Keishuk's case. We're the crazy ones Anon ahah, but I don't think we're wrong either.
Tumblr media
If you ask me I think the fandom has in general a big problem with any character that defies Yona (or the ddhhb in general), hurts or just doesn't particularly like her. Like yeah people seem especially harsh, and defensive of the ddhhb. Maybe because the story is so focused on Yona (I don't say this as a judgement) ? Who knows. But that's why it's interesting to watch people's reactions to Zeno right now ahah. I enjoy it quite a lot (even if part of me is kinda bitter that so many people are understanding without extending that to Suwon who, you know. is so similar but whatever!!!!).
Tumblr media
(how to not love them...my fist is shaking)
#ask#soowon#suwon#keishuk#kyesook#akayona#akatsukinoyona#yotd#me: i will be brief#i have like. 10 thousands more things to say about them tbh#their professionalism makes them so sick too like that's not the healthiest#bc suwon deserves comfort and indulgence and not just cold expectations#but in the end keishuk is maybe just not the person for that#and suwon doesn't expect that from him anyway#BUT LIKE. IF SOMEDAY THEY WANT TO. YK...GO BEYOND. I WOULDNT OBJECT#<- desperate#<-crying#throwing up etc etc#chapter 249 was smth to me. it was a lot. i can't believe it was real#the way keishuk was unphased and collected after losing a leg but lost his cool for suwon ooooh let's just all kill ourselves!!!#and the parallels with yuhon's death. man#but then in ch251 he's again like “how is his majesty? hm so we can't advance anymore” like directly back to business i can't with him..;#i just really wonder if the shadows thing will lead to smth with them (and judo). wait and see#it has the potential to trigger smth new with them it so has but im so scared to expect anything.#also smth very emotional to me is that keishuk had to accept and work with the part of suwon he initially didn't know/discarded#that was represented by hak and yona#that's why i think keishuk feels unfit to be anything than what he is to suwon rn and would rather hand the role to someone else#like he handed the role of protecting and supporting suwon(in the ways he can't) to the ddhhb#he's just watching over him :')#I scream and cry about Keishuk squeezing Suwon's hand bc he went in the backstreet behind his back again 5 times per day.

So I’ve had a cool idea for a new story but it’s hella long and would probably span like three books so I’ve only ever written short snippets for prompts and stuff.  With promptober/inktober & nanowrimo coming up, I thought maybe y’all should have a synopsis of the story.  This is just so I can share more of my writing and you’ll actually understand what it’s about.
The story opens in a fantasy world that’s sort of medieval, sort of rural town-ish.  There’s known magic and monsters and legends and gods that live somewhere too high up to see, like a version of Mount Olympus.  The main character is your typical hero’s journey type hero.  He’s prophesied to become a great warrior after finding a powerful sword and goes out on a quest to save his village from a famine.  His sister doesn’t believe in magic and thinks it’s a wild goose chase.  She begs him not to go because he’ll probably die trying, but pressure by the rest of the village convinces him to leave.  There’s a legend of forest spirits who have magic that can help them; our hero must slay one and gain the core of its power.  The village elders can then use the core to get rid of what’s causing the blight.
After the typical heroic quest fighting monsters and such, he comes across the forest spirit’s rumored home.  It’s creepy and derelict, overgrown with strange plants.  The hero, while exploring the place, finds a living resident hiding in a collapsed house.  A fairy.  (fairies in this universe are small, but not crazily small.  Our hero is minigiant height compared to her)  She’s an eerie sight to be sure, with bug-like features and multiple limbs, but boy is she scared.  She knows the rumors about their kind — knows our hero is there to kill her.  She would fly away, but they're inside and he’s blocking the door.
Thankfully, the hero realizes she’s no creepy monster, and can’t bring himself to kill her.  However, there’s a reason the fairy’s village is so decrepit.  Her kind had been infected with a plague of parasitic mushrooms like the ones that infect ants.  The mushrooms use the fairies’ cores like magic fertilizer.  Just like how the irl mushrooms use ants to carry their growths to a good spot then plant themselves there through the ant’s body, these mushrooms are using the fairies to bring them cores to continue growing itself, like a mind-controlled cult offering.  The hero (being the hero he is) uses his powerful sword to kill the giant hivemind mushroom, freeing everyone under its control.
Of course, the fairies are thankful, but they still can’t offer him their power (because it’s in them.  They would legitimately have to die and tear the core from their chest.)  Our hero’s new fairy friend (& potential love interest) offers to come with him herself and use her magic to help the village.  Both he and her kind simultaneously tell her no.  People would kill her the moment she stepped into the village.  (That’s also the reason she and everyone else couldn’t go for help when the mushroom took over)  However, the village comes together to pool their magic and form a talisman of sorts that will keep plants from dying.  After a heartfelt goodbye, he leaves the fairies’ village and returns home with the promise to come back and visit.
His own village celebrates his return and everything is better than ever!  His sister is glad to have him back safe, but she’s really surprised by the magic.  There are good reasons she didn’t believe in it.  She’d been doing research while he was away.. she doesn’t believe the gods are, well, gods.  (Of course they are!  We’ve seen them!  They wander by once and a while!)  But things don’t add up.  It’s…  almost like the gods don’t know they exist.  They’re giant behemoths.  They walk right by looking right out over everything.  She’s done every blasphemous thing she can think of in secret; they’re supposed to come drag her off and smite her, but nothing’s happened.  Everyone prays for rain from them and expects it to come, but she can tell by patterns in the weather that it’s not going to happen.  She knows it’s a bunch of bullshit.  Our hero tells her to just keep it to herself, fearing she’ll be exiled for her beliefs, or worse, hung.  He doesn’t believe her.  She says she can prove it.
(That’s part one) Part two is in the sister’s perspective, happening at the same time as the first part.
After doing the things mentioned above (her trying to see if the gods even know about them), she decides to run off and find out where exactly the gods live.  She blames her leaving on trying to find her brother so the village doesn’t get suspicious.  After weeks of wandering, her supplies have almost run out and she’s lost.  Following the gigantic gods is so hard when they move with such large steps.  She’s beginning to fear the worst for herself when a goddess happens to stop nearby.  They’re searching for something in the grass.  She sneaks over to investigate and finds the goddess is capturing monsters with her bare hands, collecting them like little trinkets.  She’s so fascinated by how harmless the monsters appear to the goddess that she doesn’t realize she’s been spotted.  Next thing she knows, she’s captured just like the monsters.
As the world of the gods is more fully fleshed out to the reader, its revealed that the gods’ realm that’s too high and far for the people of the village to see is actually a house.  The entire fantasy world was nothing but the field in the back between it and the woods.  The ‘monsters’ are just more gruesome depictions of small animals and bugs.  The fairies.. yeah no the fairies are still real.
The ‘goddess’ is actually just a woman who works on the farm where the ‘fantasy world’ is located.  She’d been collecting some new bugs for her pinboard collection with a bit of free time and unknowingly took our tiny main character too.  She’s suffocating the bugs one by one, attaching them to new spots on the board absentmindedly.  Meanwhile, our main character is scared to death because she’s going to be suffocated and impaled.
Thankfully, the human realizes she’s not a bug and studies her with fascination.  At barely two centimeters tall, she can’t understand our mc, and the human’s voice had been so loud and dragged out over the outdoor space that everyone believed the gods spoke in their own language.  Through a long process of fear and angst, the two figure out how to communicate, and realize they aren’t that different.  Both bond over the fact that our mc was right!  She’s very intrigued by all the strange human technology.  She wants to go back and tell the village the truth, but realizes she can’t.  That would tear apart their entire religion and way of life!  And that’s if they believed her.  If they didn’t, they’d surely punish her with some sort of gruesome death sentence.
After staying with and befriending the human, she returns to the village because she’s been homesick.  Living with everything at such a massive scale can be stressful and tiring.  Plus, she wants to at least see her brother if he makes it back.  The human offers to bring her close (but not too close) to the village and they make plans on how to contact eachother again.  They’ll go on all sorts of small adventures together, searching for her brother and just getting to know and trust one another. When her brother does return, she tells him her theories, he doesn’t believe her, she says she can prove it, and the whole thing ties back together.
(part 3, the fanale)
Back to the ‘present’, our hero curiously follows his sister out on a little adventure, and when they get to the meeting spot, she sets up the message for the human to find.  A storm blows in while they wait for a reply and our hero and his sister get separated by rain. Just as he finds his way back to her, he sees she’s being taken away by the human.  The human is really just getting her out of harm’s way, unable to hear that she brought her brother along with the noise of the storm.  All our hero sees is his sister yelling at a goddess who — as per the stories of those who blasphemy the gods — is being dragged off to nowhere to die.
Our hero immediately seeks help from his fairy friend, the only one who might be powerful enough to bargain with a goddess.  When he tries to tell her about it, she just looks at him confused.  (What gods? / The giant ones that look like me but massive!  Haven’t you seen them before? / You mean the humans? / The what?)  Fairies know about humans, and know that they’re unpredictably dangerous.  Both mc and fairy are convinced that his sister’s in major trouble and come up with a plan to get her back.  Meanwhile, said sister has told the human about the mix up, and they go back to look for her brother but obviously he’s gone.
The two are soon confronted by a rescue party of one concerned brother and fairy duo.  The fairy threatens the human with magic, but soon everyone is confused by the sister herself defending the human.  Human’s confused because that’s a real actual magic fairy.  Fairy’s confused because the human has somehow been tamed.  Our hero’s confused because he thought his sister had been kidnapped.  His sister’s confused because why does her brother know a forest spirit?  (He’d kept that a secret for the fairies’ sake)
After a long explanation from all sides, everyone calms down and hangs out at the human’s house, staying the day because that day was exhausting and no one really wants to go back home.  When they do, they come up with a plan: they’ll let the village know that the world isn’t as scary as it seemed.  The spirits in the woods are actually really friendly, and the towering gods are just them but bigger, no ethereal powers whatsoever.
They do try to get everyone to communicate, and things go pretty well.  It takes people some time to understand, but utopia is beginning to form as everyone shares technology and achievements.  The smaller people (They’re what’s called a cight, tiny humans that can see and predict the future to an extent) are far more inventive and ahead of the fairies’ time (though the fairies do have magic), and the human’s technology is ahead of both, though they could also learn quite a lot from the other civilizations.
Things are going well until the brother/sister duo gets kidnapped.  It’s the original village elders who’d mysteriously disappeared before anyone could question them on why their ‘knowledge’ was wrong.  The truth is: they knew all along, and have reasons for keeping everyone apart.
Before their village was established, before they even knew humans existed, their kind forsaw the ‘end of the world’.  It would be caused by an event just like this, where all three beings would try to come together in peace.  In those old times, no one had even seen another being that looked different to them, but as humans expanded and territories moved closer together, they began to see eachother so the elder lineage decided to do something to stop the coming together of all beings.  They created the belief that fairies would use their magic to overtake them, and turned them into monsters to be slain for a reward.  They turned humans into uncaring sacrifice-demanding gods as an excuse to get rid of people who might find out the truth.
The elders of this day forsaw our hero’s sister finding out the truth about humans, but also saw that she wouldn’t reveal the truth unless she had her brother around to confide in.  Therefore, they made up the prophecy that he was meant to be a hero and sent him away on some silly quest to a place they thought he would never return from — the fairies’ village.  (Before the mushroom takeover, if someone found a fairy the collective would imprison them in their village to stop people from revealing where they live.  They’ve done this with both humans and cights. The elders knew where it was because they have foresight)  However, once our hero returned there wasn't enough time to prevent him from coming across the human.
Now in every single future they see, the humans eventually wipe everyone out.  The siblings argue that the human wouldn’t tell anyone, but it doesn’t matter according to the elders.  Apparently, either the others who know the human get suspicious of them and find the village, or the next humans who live there sell the farmland and everything gets plowed under to build more houses.  There are other less likely scenarios, but many of them end with someone getting too curious for their own good and accidentally trying to befriend a horrible human. It might not happen this generation, or the next, or the next, but the two siblings have sealed their fate by revealing the truth.  Inevitably their kind will go extinct by the human race.  Shortly followed by the fairies.
The story will end on a hopeful note after defeating/escaping the elders.  Everyone lives at peace and the human does their best to keep everything secret, only keeping the knowledge within the family line of trusted successors.  Though I guess I’d leave it up to the reader whether or not the ‘end of the world’ comes to pass or was avoided by everyone working together.
Thats it, that’s the thing. I told you it would be too long to write.

Hi. First of all, you’re amazing and you’re doing God’s work for us. Second, could you please recommend me some time-travel fics? I think I already read a few well known ones, and was wondering if there’s more? Also, it’s usually both or Bucky who time-travels, is there fics where Steve goes alone instead?
Tumblr media
Hello Stranger!
Thanks for the ask and your very kind words. I live to serve! 😉
Now. The first thing I need to do here, is to point you towards this excellent rec list by @voylitscope There are a lot of very good fics on it and I strongly recommend you check it out.
I also want to apologize again for the long wait. I had a busy week and when I finally sat down to put together this list, I realized fairly quickly that almost 90% of it was comprised of some sort of EG-Fix-It fics. Just the idea of writing up my thoughts on all of them felt exhausting and saddening to me, so I scrapped the whole thing and started over. So without further ado, here are 7 fics featuring timey-wimey stuff that I have read and very much enjoyed and 3 more that I've yet to read, but can't wait to get to because they look amazing:
sun peeking through the sky series by dontcallmebree | M, 16K (2 Parts)
Author's summary: Steve clears his throat, curling his hands into fists to hide them. “Alright, say I believe you. Hell, you’re here. So what?”
Scott pins him with an unshakable stare, alive and unyielding. He never realized Scott could be so intense. Sam was the one who knew Scott better, but then again, Sam was always the better one of the two of them. “Look, the place I was in—the quantum realm—it messes with time, it lets you go back.”
Steve wants to throw him out.
A post-IW, twice-over canon divergent series. In the first part, Scott and the Ant Fam (or what's left of it post-Snap) burst into a heavily depressed Steve's existence and slowly turn it into something resembling a life again, and together they hatch a plan to save the world. What that plan entails? I'm not going to spoil it here, but let's just say it's much more clever and original, not to mention more logical and emotionally satisfying than anything that happened in EG. It's a quietly humorous, suspenseful, heartbreaking, and at times brutally tender series about finding and accepting second chances when you least expect them.
To Live It Again Is Past All Endeavor by trinityofone | T, 21 K
Author's summary: Time travel bodyswap! Present-day Steve and Bucky wake up back in their old bodies in 1938, while past Steve and Bucky wake in a future where they're both built like comic book heroes and Bucky's got what he thinks is a swell future robot arm. Adventures are had, and the ethics of time travel are debated. Also, everyone trash talks Willem de Kooning.
A story that really drives home some hard emotional truths while never entirely losing its light touch. Accompany Steve and Bucky as they travel into the future AND the past, and discover their once and future selves. I call this fic "the clairvoyant one" because it features Steve and Bucky contemplating staying in the past and a subsequent discussion of the ethics and purpose of time travel that had me frantically scroll back up and check that, yes, this fic was indeed written all the way back in 2014. I then proceeded to lose my mind a little bit because it is such an eerily specific and accurate rebuttal to Steve's EG ending that I'm more than half convinced the author has clairvoyant abilities.
Where All Roads Lead by DrowningByDegrees | E, 46K
Author's summary: When Steve Rogers inadvertently touches a relic in the course of a mission gone sideways during WWII, he’s catapulted seventy years into the future. Before he's even sure where he's ended up, his search for help puts him in contact with Bucky Barnes, a historian and college professor who has built a career around studying Captain America. With Bucky's help, Steve means to find out how exactly he ended up in 2017, and solve the bigger mystery of how to get home. There's just one problem. The closer they get to their goal, the less certain Steve is that he wants to go home.
A Shrunkyclunks AU where Steve accidentally time travels straight from WW2 to the 21st Century. It's funny and heartbreaking, well-written and cleverly plotted. Also features beautiful art by alby_mangroves that not only beautifully augments the story, but actually is a part of it, too.
The Restoration Artist by superheroresin | E, 109K
Author's summary: As a conservator of rare oil paintings for The Met, Steve Rogers thinks of himself part scientist, part archaeologist, but hardly an artist in his own right. Only when he’s faced with the daunting task of restoring a frozen painting from a recently unearthed Nazi art hoard does he start to feel his passion for the craft return. Before he has a chance to understand what that means, Steve is transported to the 1940’s, where he meets both The Winter Soldier himself, and his own destiny.
A Shrinkyclinks AU in which art conservator Steve travels through time to save Bucky... who has been trapped in a painting...? Mystery! Romance! Art Talk! I practically inhaled this thing in one go, despite the length. This is a really lovely story, full of clever ideas and twist and turns that will keep you guessing. And on top of that you'll learn a whole lot about art restoration! What's not to love?
the world on fire by burlesquecomposer | M, 62K
Author’s summary: Steve loves old vinyl records, doodles on his files, and cannot remember a time that he didn't serve the TVA. And that suits him just fine—that is, until stray variant Bucky Barnes, fresh out of HYDRA's grasp, drops into his time theater and makes Steve question everything he believes in.
A really well written fic that has time travel and variants and alternate timelines and parallel universes and... you get it. A whole lot of timey wimey stuff, but the author keeps track of it all and ties up everything beautifully in the end. A super fun premise, clever plotting, wonderful characterizations, and a firm grasp on the SteveBucky dynamic in every incarnation/iteration/variation. It's a really lovely fic and I think it deserves a lot more love and attention.
On the Cover of Dawn by adeepeningdig | T, 6K
Author's summary: “Listen,” Bucky says again, and pads to Steve, book still in hand. “I’d sell my soul for that/fawn/of a boy night walker/to sound of the ‘ud & flute playing/who saw the glass in my hand said/“drink the wine from between my lips.” He kisses Steve then, insistent, tongue sweeping into his mouth, body to body. Steve buckles beneath it. Two stories. One poem.
I'm cheating a little with this one... maybe. To be perfectly honest, I don't really know what's going on here even after I read this several times. Is it time travel? An alternate universe? Reincarnation? None of it at all? The thing is, I'm not sure the reader is meant to definitively know or understand what exactly is happening, and ultimately, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is the poignancy, the beautiful, at times lyrical language, and the reassurance that Steve and Bucky will find and love each other in every possible universe and incarnation. Also features one of my favorite George Barnes scenes ever.
From Tralfamadore, With Love by newsbypostcard | E, 106K | Part 1 in From Tralfamadore series
Author's summary: In 2018, Steve, Sam, and Bucky embark on a mission to explore a Hydra-owned warehouse when a kid with mutant powers sends Steve 18 years into the future. Steve's just as in love with Bucky as he was when he left, but for Bucky it's been a long 18 years. As he gets used to life in 2036 and the flaws in Bucky's idyllic life expose themselves, Steve also has to manage a suspiciously ubiquitous security force, a Brotherhood of Mutants, and old competing loyalties among his aged friends. There's a Bucky in 2018 waiting for him to come home, but if he does that, it means leaving this Bucky behind for a third, unforgivable time. How can he choose?
Yes yes, I recced this not too long ago, I know. But there is simply no way in hell that I'm going to put together a time travel rec list and NOT include this fic. The summary is pretty self-explanatory, and I really don't want to reveal anymore than that. Much of the tension and emotional drama in this fic comes from not knowing what's going to happen, and from desperately guessing at how on earth the author is going to solve Steve's impossible dilemma. I loved the way the author explored the relationship of a Steve and a Bucky who have been separated for two seconds and 18 years, respectively. Also, possibly the best use of a Fleetwood Mac song in fanfic ever.
🕰 +3 To Reads:
Savage God by PottersPink | M, 36K
Author's summary: Past, present, future, Steve knows Bucky Barnes. It’s why he recognized him when he found him in that alley in April of 1942, even though Bucky was older, stronger, wearier; he called himself The Asset, and had a metal fucking arm. The Asset was only with Steve in 1942 for a few days, but it’s enough to change the course of Steve’s life forever.
Seventy years later, Steve wakes up in the twenty-first century, and he doesn’t know whether to be heartbroken or hopeful when some of the things Bucky revealed to him in 1942 start falling into place.
Every You, Every Me by Starshot | E, 48K
Author's summary: Desperate to follow when Bucky ships out to war in 1943, Steve volunteers for Project Rebirth, an experimental program meant to turn him into the world’s first super-soldier. Instead it fails, leaving him with a condition dubbed “Chrono-Impairment” which sees him travelling uncontrollably through time, to random points in both his and Bucky’s lives.
But with Bucky brainwashed into working for HYDRA, and Steve living life on the run, torn between his own time and Bucky’s, will they ever find the happy ending they so desperately desire? (AKA the Stucky AU based on the book, "The Time Traveler’s Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger)
a day in the life by powerfulowl (StuckyFlangst) E, 20K
Author's summary: Steve wakes to the sound of someone moving about in the kitchen below him. He lies for a few moments, trying to recall—a dream?
He looks over at the nightstand and there is a piece of card propped up there. He reaches out to take it.
You are Captain America. You are Steve Rogers. It is 1956. You are married to Peggy Rogers, nee Carter. You live in New Jersey. Sometimes you have trouble remembering.
Steve Rogers wakes up on Tuesday October 30 1956, and doesn't seem to remember his life that well. Why does every day feel so familiar? And why does he keep getting visited by tall, dark, handsome men who remind him of Bucky?

You can always send more asks for fic recs if you want. I love inflicting my taste on everybody else!

Who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series (can be canon or non-canon)? Feel free if you want to write the reasons or not of why you love them...
Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Hi Anon!! Hope you're doing well! OOOOH this is a tough one, I have so many ships I enjoy, I think I change pairings and find new ones every few months. But if I had to pick........
AkaFuri (Akashi x Furihata from Kuroko No Basuke): I've shipped them the longest, I'm pretty sure my writing got better through writing and researching for fics of the ship. I also transitioned from traditional to digital drawing through drawing this ship, so yay it's them! I love them because Furihata was someone Akashi and everyone underestimated but Furihata defied everyone's expectations, conquered his fears and managed to stand up against him. Kuroko and the Seirin basketball team changed Akashi's opinions and made him see everyone as equals, but Furihata sorta kickstarted that.
ItaJun (Itadori x Junpei from Jujutsu Kaisen): I actually shipped them back when JJK was first airing! So that's three years with them dear god. I made a post about them but to summarize, I love the potential they had & loved how they clicked together!
Zukka (Zuko x Sokka from Avatar The Last Airbender): This one's relatively new but they got me obsessed enough to write a 300k word for for them and made me go on an unstoppable and frankly unhealthy drawing spree for months (I have a callous on my hand...unsure if it's because of just them but they definitely didn't help). I love their dynamic, they play off each other well, make up for each other's weaknesses and their interactions are always funny to watch. They're very cute to me.
JonJay/JayJon (Jon Kent x Jay Nakamura from DC Comics): A CANON COUPLE!!! They're very adorable and I enjoyed watching the way they helped each other get to their goals in their introduction comic as a couple(Superman Son of Kal El). Watching Superman be bi and have an Asian bf was just, very inspiring. The way Jon's heroism and ideals are defined by Jay's ideals is so cool.
I have a lot more which I can put as honorable mentions: Korrasami (The Legend of Korra), SatoSugu(Jujutsu Kaisen), Stucky (the Captain America Trilogy was awesome and the only part I like from the MCU), KiriBaku(I think I'm pretty much over them now unless I get back into BNHA), Calliette(bring back First Kill please please PLEASE), XiCheng(Jiang Cheng x Lan Xichen from MDZS), BingQiu & MoShang (both from Scum Villain Self-Saving system).
These are the ones I remember. There's probably some crucial formative ship for me that I'm missing but rn I think this is it.
My qualifications for being obsessed with a ship are:
HAS to be gay
They should be complementary in some way
The franchise they come from needs to have a plot that isn't their relationship, but their relationship, or just the character's motivation is sorta woven into the overarching theme of the story. Example; In AkaFuri, Furihata is instrumental in defeating Akashi and his team because Furihata isn't there to exactly take down Akashi. He CAN'T. But if he works with everyone else on his team, he stands a chance and can make a difference. The ultimate theme of KNB is that we should value friendship, teammates and should lift each other up rather than view the world as enemies to defeat. Korra and Asami are seemingly polar opposite with Korra being a representative of spirits while Asami is a representative of human technological advancement. TLOK is about harmony between these two aspects of the world, and Korrasami's relationship is a representation of that. I think pretty much all my ships can work like that (Jiang Cheng is too cynical, never lets anyone close and is prone to conflict, Lan Xichen is too trusting and too complicit, never wanting conflict and therefore not really confronting anything and BOTH of these flaws of theirs are to their detriment, etc etc).
I think I like ships which I can use to examine the themes of the main story, and see how the union of two people could influence the meaning of the canon.
And, I'll be honest, it's also about how aesthetic they are together and how good the smut potential is. It's shipping in the end, and I can write thousand-word meta essays but also be going gaga over their smut lmao.
Hope this was an adequate reply!! Also please don't apologize, I hadn't answered this before I think? haha i keep forgetting what i write.

*RISES FROM THE DEAD* OMG HI ITS RAMBLING ANON I'M BACK!
OK so I have to ask... Why is Jensen and Jared MaxiPadalecki's PR teams so adamant about trying to convince everyone that they still are like brothers when they're clearly not? And trust me, it SHOWS. They can honestly just say "Yeah we don't hang anymore." And I'm sure there will be some fans (like us) who will not be surprised. Friends drift apart, it happens. It's not the end of the world. Tho we all know why J2 isn't not a thing anymore and it's bc of Jared's abysmal behavior. Matter of fact, notice how anybody who gets close to Jared drifts off and away from him after a period of time except for a handful of people...
Hello!  Welcome back :)  I’ve been off Tumblr — or at least spotty — for a bit now myself, so good timing on your return!
Yeah, I don’t really know.  I mean, I confess that I don’t spend much time on the real-life bits of Supernatural (or any show) and that most of what I hear stems from those around me — especially my closest fandom friend… whose name I’m not dropping as a line of defense against stan harassment (those who spend much time on my profile can probably guess who I mean though) — but J2 really doesn’t come across as genuine friendship, much less brotherhood.  I’ve never had much taste for bts stuff, and I’ve lost most of the little I did have.
I have, however, seen some of their con photos, conversations, etc, and those don’t seem very natural; similarly, much of what I hear about their interactions in general is very… performative?  I guess?  I’d expect much more closeness if they were actually friends.  The most recent example is from that string of show renewals and cancellations: if I were close friends with someone who just got big news like that — whether positive or negative — I’d respond to that with either congratulations or commiserations well-nigh immediately.  (I’d certainly not wait almost a week — that is, from 11 May to 16 May — before posting a save-the-show hashtag.  Maybe that’s just me.)  And nor is this the only example of the performative closeness, natural distance to which I refer, so the argument that “eh, they’re busy, it doesn’t mean anything” doesn’t hold much water long-term, even if it’s accurate in this particular case.
Pragmatically, I’d wager that the brother dynamic is an attempt to play to the show’s perceived fanbase, and that’s why the bts brotherhood is being played up.  It doesn’t make much sense to me — from what I’ve seen, it feels like most of the fandom is fractured between them anyway; I recognize that this is only my experience and not true in its entirety, but I only ever run into people who love Jared and those who hate him, and there’s rarely a middle ground — but that’s the impression I’ve gotten from the PR.
I honestly think it’s backfiring though.  I mean, it just comes across as fake and duplicitous, and I feel like they should both just cut their losses and, as you described it, drift apart.  It happens, and I tend to feel that trying to avoid that just makes things worse for all involved.  (And yeah, I certainly cannot defend JarPad’s actions and I don’t even know him/have any stake in it, to the point that I can just ignore him for the most part; I can’t imagine having to deal with him in close-quarters like a “brotherhood”, friendship, or even just as colleagues.)
Anyway… I feel like I’m rambling at this point, so I’ll wrap it up… It was good to hear from you again, and thanks for the ask!  I hope this answer was decent enough, and all the best until next time!
However, before I completely wrap up, a message to any stan who might be reading this… I recognize that much of the above is freely admitted to be speculation.  All of those statements are marked as such.  Don’t come at me about stuff I outright admitted myself.  I also recognize that I’m posting this and not being the kindest person ever to JarPad.  This is because I dislike him.  You are not going to change my mind with threats or slurs.  You are definitely not going to change my mind by cowering behind the anonymous ask feature.  I will report anon asks of this nature if I have to.  Cheers :)

Sapphire, Silver and Steel for the character meme, please.
Oh and Harry & Ruth, too, if you feel like it! 💙
Thank you! <3
1. Who would you rather swap aesthetics/outfits with for a day?
Okay, well, this time I'll have the sparkly waistcoat!!
2. Who do you team up with in a 2v2 volleyball match? Which side wins?
Silver. I suspect that Sapphire and Steel will win in this (obviously life or death) game, but who else?
3. If each of them got one million dollars, who would waste/spend their money the fastest?
They are all looking at this question. It does not apply to them.
However, if for some reason they had to dispose of 1 million dollars each because it was, maybe, Evil Money, Silver would be fastest, because that's Silver's nature. More confetti!
4. Who would die first in a horror movie? Who would be the survivor?
Silver. Sapphire and Steel would both survive. To be honest, all three of them would probably make it. They exist in permanent horror movie land and they're all still around. Even after things we shan't mention, they were still surviving.
5. They're all on the run from the law! What crimes did each commit and who is most likely to get caught?
lol. Again, not applicable, and none of them will be caught unless they want to be caught or it somehow happens temporarily because time has sort of made people think they've committed crimes in the middle of an assignment.
Crimes are something they leave to humans. If they committed a crime by their standards, they'd be on the other side, and all three of them have personally turned that proposition down already.
For Harry & Ruth:
1. You have to choose one to erase from their series! Who do you pick?
Look, if I pick Ruth, I'm not watching any more. If I pick Harry, there probably is no Spooks anyway. I'll pick Harry because I feel sure somehow he'd come back. Ruth would manage it at any cost, even without memory of him. She just would.
2. Who would you rather run into in a dark alley at night?
Ruth Evershed! At least there are significantly better odds on my not being assassinated next.
3. Who would you save from a burning building? Who would be more likely to save you from a burning building?
Ruth! I mean, if Harry wasn't there already. And for the other way around, Harry, I think, probably? He was once a field officer.
Mind you, it's Spooks. The odds are I'd probably burn to death tragically in the bomb that detonated before they could stop it.
4. Who would win in a dance-off?
Good question. This is a scenario they would avoid, but I feel Harry would win. But you never know with Ruth. She has hidden depths, likes performing and it doesn't pay to underestimate her.
Best to just enter a dancing competition undercover as partners and stay in via spy tricks.
5. They swap bodies for 24 hours! How badly do they mess up (or improve) each other's lives?
Ruth would probably pull off a reasonably good Harry impression for a day, although she would look at loads of Eyes Only documents she shouldn't be looking at, and she would have to go through a full half hour of panicking first. If she had to make the tough decisions, I think she'd actually be much better than usual, because she likes acting, so once in character as 'Harry' she'd probably just go for it, but it could go either way. Could be fine, could be the end of the world.
Harry OTOH would struggle with not being able to bark orders at people without everyone staring, everyone expecting him to be the sympathetic one and being supposed to know how all the computer systems work, and he's better at dry wit and assassinating his enemies than doing the weekly round up report.
Ruth would have to cover for him a lot.
Alternatively, they just come in, carry on with their respective usual roles while looking like each other and let the rest of Section D worry about what the hell is going on and then tell them all it was a psych test, and at least one of them failed.
However it goes, I don't think anybody's life is improved.

For the OC ask game, 2, 4, 5, 9 and 29 for both Fross and Kai! And for you, E, F, and H >:)
THANK YOU SM FRIEND!!! :DDD
2. How easy is it for your character to laugh?
Kai - Relatively easy! But not too much I think. It's just that he's already so upbeat and smiling all the time so laughing is like one step over that. You get what I mean?
Fross - Politely? Fairly easy if he respects you just a little and doesn't want to upset you. Genuinely? Not as much. He has to like you a lot for that, but then when that happens he totally becomes a giggly schoolboy with a crush lol.
4. How easy is it to earn their trust?
Kai - Hmmm easy? Kind of. I'm not sure. Because he tends to be optimistic and try to see the good in everyone around him, if it came down to it, he would probably consider you trustworthy until proven untrustworthy. But he's not careless either, he might be an oversharer but he's not gonna trust a stranger with sensitive information unless life itself depended on it or something. So he'd give you a chance but not rush too much into it.
Fross - Extremely hard lmao. I'm convinced it took Stanley at least 80 years to earn his trust and he was even helped by the fact that Fross enjoyed spending time in VR Las Vegas and got extremely lonely because he hated all of the other Zeniths. I guess he "trusted" Ted Faro once, but that was because he was parasocializing hard and the version of Faro he had in his head was deeply romanticized.
5. How easy is it to earn their mistrust?
Kai - Relatively easy if you know where to strike.
Fross - Very easy! I'd argue that mistrust is his default state. See above. Even when he gets really close to someone, he keeps expecting them to have ulterior motives or disappoint him in some other way (e.g. Kai).
9. Do they swear? Do they remember their first swear word?
Kai - Yes on both accounts! I'm not sure what his first swear word would be though? I'm thinking it was one he heard from his Focus and then kept repeating over and over for three weeks, much to his werak's chagrin lol. But I'd have to figure out what kind of holos Takuto would have saved in his Focus... It's not too far-fetched to think he might have learned his first swear word from Akechi himself which is a really funny idea to me.
Fross - Very rarely, I think. I don't think he would say them casually, but only if he really was pissed and trying to insult someone, if that makes sense? So that's very risky considering the circumstances which means he has to either just mutter it so they can't hear it or say them alone lol. Maybe he goes into his VR world and just yells swears for a while, that sounds healing. He definitely doesn't remember his first swear word but if I had to guess it was probably damn.
29.  Do they usually live up to their own ideals?
Kai - He tries to, at least! He sticks to them most of the time but sometimes he slips in moments of extreme emotional distress. It's only natural.
Fross - No lol. His moral compass is a roulette wheel anyways so I'm not sure it's possible, haha. And he's also a massive hypocrite, there's that.
E) Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you?
Unfortunately they would both really hate my guts :( As for whether I would like them, I don't know about Fross but at least I do wish Kai were real 💔
F) What do you feel when you think of your OC (pride, excitement, frustration, etc)?
Depends on my mood lol. A lot of the times it's pride or excitement, occasionally it's self-recognition through the other (derogatory) which leads to actual anger and hurt and even hate lol. Sometimes it's [redacted] and sometimes it's love and care and appreciation and warmth and comfort, and sometimes it's even pity lol. When I say they're everything to me, I really mean it, haha. They make me feel the full spectrum of human emotion, even jealousy lmao. But maybe this question wasn't looking for a literal answer but more like an average :?
H) What trait do you admire most?
For Kai, it'd probably be easier to list what I don't admire about him, lol. But I guess it's just what I admire most 🤔 Soooo, probably his determination, his optimism, his can-do attitude. I like how well he plays the role of a hero. He really has the vibes of a leader who's the glue that keeps the team together. And I love that. He really inspires me in so many ways.
I guess this is gonna sound weird, but I really admire Fross's will to live. I always have. At this point I'm convinced that the only reason he survives so much shit he shouldn't be able to survive is because he really wants to (or maybe because evil never dies lol).
But, more importantly, even when everyone hates him, even when he's at his most despairing, even when it seems like he has nothing left to live for, he has this conviction that he deserves to live a good life, no matter how long it takes to find it. He knows it's unfair that the apocalypse happened during his time. And he's so sure that he deserves just as much as anybody else...
Obviously this is a problem for him because he's so ready and willing to step on whoever he needs to make his ideal life happen that it gets in his own way. He's willing to put his own right to live over an entire planet's right to live. But it's so impressive to me because it's like he's constantly drawing from a bottomless well, clinging to life, to his right to exist, even when everyone around him desperately wants him to keel over and die. I have to wonder where he got it from.
Beyond the sentimental stuff, though, this places him in direct opposition to the self-sacrificial characters around him (Aloy, Kai, Lis), which I think is cool.

hi sage!!!! pls talk about rei sakuma. thank you (say whatever!!! i would like to hear about your blorbo ♡)
oh good lord have you opened the flood gates of hell
hm. well i first got attached to rei circa mid july of 2020 (sage how do you remember the date so specifically? fuck if i know dude). i had originally been really attached to kanata (i still am. i love her) and roughly put: i was struggling with realizing i'm autistic (i thought it was adhd and that every autist in the world was being dramatic because "everyone does that" as it turns out, they don't) at the time and rei just kinda fuckin. i don't know. made it fall into place if that makes sense.
like rei just hit me as a character who just so strongly reminded me of myself. there's a lot of personal stuff there i could get into but to give the spark notes of it: i have always largely been attached as a "gifted kid who had so much going for them!" that i'd be treated as an adult and expected to just. solve adult problems. and to see a character who had also been levied with that and had just kinda fucking given up entirely really echoed the shit i was going through. so like. that's kinda what drew me to him i think. also i thought he was silly
well here's my favorite lore tidbits in ties to me at least. rei is inadvertently what got me to study japanese (1: enstars TLs are hard to find and i'm incredibly lazy and hate asking for help so about a year ago i was like fuck it! and now i'm learning it and 2: i liked his use of multiple 1st person pronouns in easter). my girlfriend and i actually bonded over enstars (rei + kaoru in particular) so he inadvertently got us together. the fact he can play violin got me really impassioned about my music studies for about a month
my favorite lore bits in general? i looove his dynamic with 2wink. i adore sad grandpa and his overactive kids (+ brother dynamics here. how the aois look completely just like. get along fine get along great!! from the outside when in actuality they have a dynamic not. horribly far from the sakumas. less overtly violent but still very 'younger brother feels overshadowed by the older, and older brother is sometimes kind of a prick'). i absolutely adoreeeee his dynamic with kaoru in crossroads. i love the dichotomy between rei, as someone who's spent his entire life as being "gifted" and bearing the ugly burden of it, getting told off by kaoru, someone's who's "normal." like i love how they're both opposites of each other yet both just as disillusioned with the world in 2nd year. i could go crazy talking about kaorei Ok anyway. i love how ultimately rei is still kind despite what he says about himself. he might whine and insist he's a "dark demon of the night" or something but i feel like that comes from his guilt of feeling like he's unable to just. solve everyone's problems. that's how he lost the war!! he tried so hard to save everyone that he ultimately couldn't save anyone + destroyed his own relationships in the process. i love how the way he's "selfish" is by standing up for himself and saying he's not going to just fix everyone's problems for them anymore. and i like how his conflict with koga reflects this; it's not that koga is dumb or anything, but that he's staring at rei with rose tinted glasses. he sees rei as an idol (arguably, he's just as bad as those who demand rei fix their problems) first and foremost and can't understand why rei would just stop being his idol. god. undead dynamic. i feel like his dynamic with ritsu is also fucking crazy. and i think ritsu is right not to just point blank forgive him tbh. enstars is great cause you can see how both of them are just hurting the other by acting the way they do but how they're both so similar + stubborn they'll refuse to admit it. and how rei says that even if ritsu hates him he's still his big brother?? good lord. i'm a sucker for older siblings in media (checks out! i am an older sibling)
outside of the serious stuff, rei is also great cause he looooves acting like he's stupid. he loves to pretend he doesn't have 8 different master plans rotating in his brain at any given time. he loved pulling the "ohh i wouldn't know i'm just stupid 🥺" card and it's fucking crazy. there's something wrong with his brain. he genuinely knows how to help people form his past experiences but doesn't want to become so over relied on again that he constantly plays the "ohhh i am just so old and my bones are so creaky :( my genuinely helpful advice was just a fluke!" card ALL THE TIME. i think it's funny how he loves to tease people. act all haughty and then be like "haha wouldn't it be funny if you sucked on my boob." it's fun because he's just like. still a Guy beneath his 8 levels of demon hell. he's just very silly. i like that he skips class all the time to sleep, too.
and like (slaps the top of oddballs) these guys can fit SO much found family. you're telling me 5 guys who have consistently been outed from their peer groups for "weird" interests/abilities/family shenanigans finally meet up in high school, get stuck in a weird trauma hell for a year, and they're NOT going to have a weirdly strong bond of trust that it's something to fear? good lord. they make me feel crazy. i love that they ultimately end up making a home for themselves and they remain close friends after the fact (hell, if i remember right they were friends even before eichi did eichi things. he's just kinda what cemented them and really knit them together). i love natsume and his 2 sets of parents
good lord. i could probably say more but i've been typing this for an hour and a half! whoops! thank you for asking me about him though :) i have many thoughts. as you can tell. also look at this funny video i have

Magna x Luck? I don't strongly ship them but I can only see them ending up with each other platonically or romantically.
Hi there anon! Thank you so much for the ask! 💖
(The yellow denotes my opinions regarding their friendship whereas the pink "not my cup of tea" is in regard to the relationship in a romantic sense).
Tumblr media
BINGO!! 😁 Yay! (Is using both pink and yellow cheating? I made up the game so I guess it’s my rules, right? 😅😂 But maybe I just really wanted that bingo...)
Excited (and possibly incoherent) ramblings and headcanons under the cut...
Gosh this may be my BROTP to end all BROTPs (thus why I felt I needed to whip out the yellow 😅)! I absolutely adore Magna and Luck! (I actually have a magnet of fanart of them hanging up on my refrigerator!) They're two of my favourite characters in the series, and their dynamic is so incredibly wonderful! I love how much fun they have with each other while also always supporting each other and striving to help each other become the best versions of themselves. It's so sweet to me how much they admire one another without realizing it. For instance, Magna always feels like he's falling behind Luck when Luck really thinks Magna is great and an amazing rival and he wants to get stronger so he can match him.
I have the biggest soft spot in the world for found family, and Magna and Luck really embody that too! Magna was an orphan, and Luck had a bad relationship with his mom prior to becoming an orphan. However, they really did find a family in each other in the end. My heart is so full just thinking about it--especially since they really do deserve this wonderful bond they have with each other! 💖🥰 After all, Magna is just such a sweetheart--even if he tries to act all tough, he's really just the biggest teddy bear and a true and loyal friend, and Luck may be a little lightning gremlin but he has a heart of gold and loves his squad family very deeply, (even if his go-to method for expressing affection is to pick fights with everyone 😂). They're so freaking cute--I love them!! 💕
It was clear they were buddies from the beginning, and their bantering and sparring dynamic was lots of fun (their first introduction where they're fighting over the pudding just brings the biggest smile to my face every time!). I really didn't expect the series to go into their relationship any more than that, but then we got all of that wonderful background and those flashbacks about how they became friends and how much they care about and really respect each other in the underwater temple. (Honestly that sea temple was a magical place for Black Bull friendships all around! 💖) Not to mention what might be one of my favourite moments in the series, when Magna, Vanessa, and Asta save Luck, and Magna hugs him, reassuring him that he is cared for deeply and will always have a home and a family with the Black Bulls. 🥺 To be perfectly frank, I probably cared more about that hug between Luck and Magna than anything that has happened or could possibly happen between any characters I actually ship in a romantic sense in this series (sorry not sorry to my BC ships 😁). Friendships are what Black Clover does best in my opinion, and nothing against romantic ships but the platonic bonds between the characters are just infinitely more interesting to me than the romantic ones--Luck and Magna's is definitely at the top of that list, and I don't have words to describe how much I just adore their friendship from the bottom of my heart! (My sister teases me that I get as swoony over friendships as most people get over romantic ships, 😅 and this is one just one of my all time favourites, in anything, ever). 💜💛
To be honest with you, viewing it as a romantic ship isn’t really my cup of tea. They are very much brothers and family in my mind—something deeper than what we usually think of as friendship but not in a romantic sense (the term “platonic soulmates” comes to mind)—but I think the fact that their bond is a platonic one doesn’t diminish the depth of the love, affection, and respect that they have for each other. One of the things I love about Black Clover giving friendships the spotlight is that it shows that just because a love is platonic, doesn’t mean that it is any less deep or beautiful than a romantic love, it’s just different. And I really think there is something very beautiful about their friendship and the care they have for each other. 💖
It is really difficult for me to see Luck with anyone romantically, personally, (at least, as he is right now)—he just has a lot of deeply-rooted personal issues and problems from his past that, I think, he needs to work through before being in a romantic relationship, and even if he did find healing from those someday, it would still be hard for me to imagine him having much of an interest in romance (but that's just me and my personal interpretation 😅). However, I couldn't feel more strongly that he and Magna will be together forever in a platonic sense! They are platonic soulmates as far as I'm concerned, and I really can't imagine there being a scenario where you'd have one without the other. Wherever Magna goes, Luck won't be far behind and vice versa. Even when they're in their 90s, they will probably be trying to spar with each other in the magical old folks' home. 😂
I'm going to cut myself off because this was a lot of rambling, but yes, I love them as friends so, so much! 💖 If I felt I could do either of them justice with my writing, I would absolutely write a story about them and their friendship one day. (I have read some good ones written by others though so many thanks to the fandom for that! 💕)
Some headcanons about their friendship:
The absolute truth is that Magna doesn't really like pudding as much as everyone may think, but once, shortly after he and Luck joined the Black Bulls, Luck took his pudding at dinner by mistake leading to one of their first ever sparring matches--and Luck keeps taking his pudding to this day in order to recreate the scenario of one of their first fights. However, Magna was never really upset about the pudding specifically, but it was rather the fact that his food was being taken [because of his upbringing as a poor orphan, he learned to appreciate any and every bit of food that was given to him and didn't want any of it to be taken away. (It is quite the adjustment for him to have access to a near constant supply of food via Charmy's magic, but he gets there in time)]. Luck didn't/doesn’t quite understand this so he continues to take Magna's pudding thinking it's his favourite food so they can spar with each other. Realizing this, Magna always makes a big show out of Luck taking his pudding (it's never disingenuous but he is definitely doing it because he knows these sparring matches are important to Luck), and he eventually comes to appreciate pudding because of what it means to his and Luck’s friendship. 💜
Luck's love language is "Fight me!" (I'm not really sure if this is really a headcanon or just the truth 😂), but Magna's is quality time so they always feel appreciated by each other since they spend their time fighting together. 😊
When they are not hanging out just the two of them, they also love spending time with Vanessa. They visit the restaurant that she starts with Charmy in the future so frequently that they often get mistaken for working there.
Magna and Luck are basically a packaged deal, and no one ever really sees one without the other. Like I mentioned above, I can't really see Luck with anyone romantically, but if Magna was ever in a relationship and settled down with someone, I imagine that Luck probably lives with them (or in a tiny house in their backyard or something)—but he would never be allowed to babysit any kids they may have. 😂
One year for Magna's birthday, Luck stayed up all night trying to make him pudding from scratch. Charmy had to come to the rescue around 3 in the morning after all Luck had really succeeded in making was a huge mess!
Magna and Luck work together to develop a modified version of the "baptism" to play with their Black Bulls nephews and nieces--though there is a bit a disagreement in that Luck thinks there should be more sparring (and he isn't allowed to fight with any of the kids--at least not until they get their grimoires).
In the future, after the squad changes hands several times, Magna eventually becomes the captain of Black Bulls, and Luck becomes his vice captain. Whenever he is addressed, it is always, "Captain Magna, sir...and Luck!" Luck always beams and puffs out his chest with pride whenever he is remembered, and it never fails to make Magna smile. 😊
Magna and Luck are absolutely adored and idolized by the new generation of Black Bulls when they are the Captain and Vice Captain respectively. Many of the members are their beloved "nieces and nephews," but there are several newcomers as well. Similar to Captain Yami, “Captain Magna” and Luck love letting the underdogs and misfits onto their squad, and they often leave the magic knights entrance exams with lots of out-of-the-box candidates that none of the other captains wanted (trying to give other kids the chance that Captain Yami gave them back in the day). They come up with lots of wild ideas and fun games for the new generation of Black Bulls to play together too (Magna has a real knack for coming up with ridiculous “team building” exercises--a lot of which are just modified versions of games he and Luck used to play with their generation's Black Bulls or with their nephews and nieces when they were younger).
As they grow older, Luck worries that Magna might be becoming too responsible and boring (especially when he becomes a magic knight captain) so he invents "the boring stick" which is essentially the mediaeval fantasy equivalent of a pool noodle that he uses to (gently) bop Magna on the head when he's acting too responsible, too grown up, or otherwise too boring.
When Luck has nightmares about his traumatic childhood or his time as an elf, Magna will walk with him up and down some of the corridors of the hideout or in the grounds outside if the weather is nice until he lets out enough of that nervous energy to fall back asleep, no matter how late it is. 💛
Even after they have long since retired from the magic knights and are well into their old age, they still somehow find time and energy to try to spar with each other--especially if Luck takes Magna's pudding. 😁💖
Thanks again for your ask, anon, and for playing bingo! 🥰
