Salem's Lot by Stephen King
Last year I read a couple of short story collections by Stephen King, in these I read the short stories One For The Road and Jelrusalem's Lot. Both of these stories were some of my favourites, and when I found out that they both linked to this novel I knew I had to read it. This is King's novel inspired by Stoker's Dracula, one of my favourite classics, so that was yet another good reason to pick this book up. I was a bit intimidated by the lenght of the book, but I devoured it.
I really liked Salem's Lot, It felt addictive in a way that I haven't experienced in a while with books. It tells the story of a small town called Jerusalem's Lot, often called Salem's Lot by people there. It's a really well done vampire story, that clearly takes a lot from Dracula, in a way I really enjoyed. To put it simply it's the story of a town that ends up being hunted by a vampire, but it's really reductive. I really liked how even though you are aware from the beginning of a couple of important informations, that could have very easily been turned into plot twists, you are always waiting to see the next thing that is going to happen. The characters are interesting, and you end up rooting for them quite easly. I generally really liked the vibe of the story, it's a nice twist on a classic, and although the vampires are very traditional they didn't feel boring at all.
My edition includes the two short stories I have previously mentioned, as well as the scenes the author ended up cutting before publishing. So I'll add a few workds on the two stories:
One For The Road
This is probably one of my favourite short stories by King. It's simple, but effective, and it works perfectly no matter if you read the novel or not. It's set a few years after the novel's events. One night, during a snow storm a man goes to a bar in a town near Jerusalem's Lot, where he and his family lost their way. I won't say more than this, it's a great story. It's quite simple, but as I said it works really well in my opinion, and the fact that it motivated me to pick up a 500+ pages novel speaks for itself.
Jerusalem's Lot
This story is also really good, I will say there is one thing about it that stands out more about it than the plot for me. The structure of it is just what I love in a short story. It traces the idea of Dracula, as the narration is made up of letters and journal entries, which is something I love, and it works amazingly. The story is set near Jerusalem's Lot in 1850, and I love historical settings. It plays around with the idea of places that attract or hold evil in a really nice way. It was a really nice idea to create some past for the places you get to know in the main novel, and it winks to another of Stoker's novels: The Lair Of The White Worm (which I read last motht and I reviewed here).
Overall I absolutely recommend this novel, it's a really nice horror that in my opinion worked really well with the figure of vampires, and it also has a couple of elements that reference to the themes of haunted houses, which if you know me I love.

Salem’s Lot 🧛🏻♂️🩸
Stephen King
Spoiler free review
This classic novel by Stephen king is about a small town which includes a house with a morbid history. A couple of new arrivals blow in and purchase the Marsten house and open a furniture store in hopes of bringing some life to Jerusalem’s Lot, however end up doing the exact opposite. Ben Mears, a writer and former resident of “The Lot” makes a return after facing his own tragedies in hopes of writing a book during his stay. Instead he ends up grouping up with several others to fight a blood thirsty evil that no one was prepared for.
This is one of my favorite Stephen King novels of all time. It’s a classic, and you can really get a good feel for his style. If you’re looking for a good starting point to get into King’s books, this is a good one. This book will have you feeling a wide range of emotion. There were points where I felt angry, sad, but most importantly scared for many of the characters. At certain points I literally closed the book, placed my hands on the side of my face and asked myself “what the f*** did I just read?” before proceeding through the pages. If you’re looking for a good, scary, attention grabbing vampire novel, Salem’s Lot is for you. Not only that but the ending will leave you feeling quite satisfied in a dark sort of way.
I give this one 5/5 hearts

LOWKEY BEEN INSPIRED BY @not-sure-what-im-feeling s AWESOME OCS AND LORE (Go check them out)
And it inspired me to talk about MY ocs :D
I mention in passing that I am in fact writing a novel, but I try to avoid saying too much to prevent spoilers buuuuut I think I can keep it vague enough while still rambling <3
The novel (technically a novella) is called 'The Shadow Walker' and here's a draft of a blurb:
With no friends, an absent mom, an abusive dad, and a shadow that inexplicably went missing; Nicholas Walker is convinced his life couldn’t possibly get any worse. But everything changes when he meets something (or someone) who may or may not want him dead.
(Not the best but again it;s a draft)
ANYWAY THIS IS MY BOY NICHOLAS
He's 12 years old and a selective mute and my scrungliest little blorbo who experiences the horrors™. He doesn't have any friends, is neglected by his parents, and all in all has a bad time before the book starts :(
The only source of healthy food in the house (he borrows money from his dad and goes to the store alone) but is severely malnourished from eating nothing more than reheated takeout his dad left in the fridge. Nick doesn't talk verbally unless it's to his dad (out of necessity) and otherwise converses in ASL (which I'm learning for this book <3). Loves pretty buildings and stargazing, has a dream of visiting things like Notre Dame and the colloseum some day and is fascinated by architecture. I just realised that this kid would adore Minecraft but anyway after things get better for him he's given Lego models of like the eiffel tower and he loves them :)
Gonna stop before I spend the entire post talking about my boy and move onto
HIS MOMM
You know that thing that's like, "Not a bad person, just a bad parent"? Yeah. That's her. She ran away from her abusive boyfriend and left Nick behind out of fear, since she didn't know if she could survive by herself, much less with a child in tow. She ends up leaving with her best friend and they travel around the world a lot for their job. They're a musician who plays back up for bands in different places and Rachel ends up learning to play some stuff too after watching them for so long. The two end up dating at some point and they've been together ever since. Rachel still sends Nicholas a postcard every time she travels to a new place, but she doesn't have the courage to actually see him in person yet. Also fun fact. She's descended from a woman who was killed for being a 'witch' during the salem trials. This is relevant to the story :3
Do I have to talk about his dad??? Ughhhhh fine
This is Gregory Walker. I hate him. bye.
Not but fr, he's a terrible father. Works at a convenience store and his co-workers fear him. Lives off of take-out and instant ramen, never checks on his son. Spends all his money gambling and buying alchohol. Literally would not notice if he missed an entire month of his life (*cough* foreshadowing *cough*)
ANYWAY ONTO TWO OF MY FAVOURITES
LEXI AND CHELSEAAA
Lexi is a single mom who grew up kinda spoiled and is still figuring out how to raise a kid. Her parents are kinda helpful about it but also she doesn't want to raise Chelsea how she was raised so hgjhrj. Chelsea was orignally planned to be autistic since this entire book is a transparent cover for neurodivergent rep but the version of her in my head is so very ADHD instead. They only show up near the end of the book so I'm still experimenting with them a bit but Lexi is a huge book worm and Chelsea loves unicorns, like, I mean in the 'mythology is cool way' not the 'stereotypical girl behaviour' way. She does love pink things and sparkles though
THERE IS ANOTHER CHARACTER BUT THEY'RE A SPOILERRRR BUT I WILL JUST SAY THEY ARE NOT HUMAN AND ALSO WHAT THE TITLE OF THE BOOK IS TALKING ABOUT
(It's a sentient shadow, that's- do you get the pun in the name- there's three references in it-)

College Professor Elliott x Gn! Student
Part 2 of ? Part 1 here
I really hoped that no one would tell just how desperate I was to talk to them, how badly I wished for the opportunity to flip through the pages of their mind…
“Horror.”
I nearly took a step back in shock. Horror? They didn’t seem like the type! Sitting in my front row, still smiling up at me as if they hadn’t just declared their dream for writing one of the most difficult and complex genres.
“Horror?” I asked, considering for a moment that perhaps I misunderstood them. They looked so sweet, so innocent, and so… breathtakingly beautiful that I couldn’t imagine for a second that they would have the ability to create it. “I have to admit…” I mumbled, the words spilling out before I could stop them. “I’m surprised.”
They laughed, their smile growing wider before they spoke. “I know, I don’t look it. But it’s something I’ve always enjoyed and I’d really like to give it a shot.”
“Then you've come to the right place! And.. well, I suppose I should take this as an opportunity to teach one of the most important lessons of all time…” I made my way back to the whiteboard, dropping my book off at my desk first… and for the first time I was feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the eyes on my back as I wrote. “You’ve all heard this a million times, but it never hurts to say it once more;”
‘Never judge a book by its cover.’
I dropped the marker back on the whiteboard’s ledge and turned back to the class. “Just as I did to…” I glanced back at the student, who was now holding back a laugh. I gestured for them to give me their name, which may have been a mistake for my own willpower.
“Y/n,” they answered.
“Y/n,” I repeated their name, like honey on my tongue, smooth and sweet, leaving me craving more just from our short interaction. “Horror is such a fun genre to dive into, one that dares you to take steps into the darkness and embrace it!”
My feet led me to stand in front of them again. Normally I would feel powerful standing in front of a student like this, knowing I’m the reason they came to this class, maybe even the reason they decided to start writing— and yet I felt nervous. My fingers fidgeting at my sides as I searched for the words, the strength to keep things professional when all I wanted to do was attempt to charm them.
“A haunting in a small town,” I began and pushed myself to move away from them and address the class once again. “Or a group of cannibals hunting campers, maybe even bloody and disgusting murders from a serial killer… Horror is, I like to think, one of the most creative genes that exists.
“Sure, you have romance, mystery, space adventure, and so on— but horror!” I brought my hands together in front of me, leaning forward as I spoke. I scanned through my students, all of them hanging off my every word— and then Y/n, who was just smiling and looking as delectable as ever. Maybe even proud of themselves as I spoke, when all I wanted to do now was impress them. “Horror gives you the opportunity to destroy worlds, to create evil, to ruin lives with a single sentence!”
I turned to them again “Tell me, Y/n, what’s an idea you have for your future horror novel?”
I really hoped that no one would tell just how desperate I was to talk to them, how badly I wished for the opportunity to flip through the pages of their mind… To learn everything about them! What made them want to become a writer? Why horror? What other genres do they enjoy? Have they read any of my works? Why did they choose my class over the others that were available?
“A farmer moves to a small town and slowly uncovers the truth of the town and the evil that dwells within it.”
“Very interesting….” I laced my hands behind my back and walked across the room, avoiding their seat entirely and going to the opposite side of the room. “Are you inspired by Salem’s Lot?”
They raised their brows at me, their mouth forming a little ‘o’ as they stared back at me. “Y-yes.”
“I’m a very big fan of King myself,” I replied. “It’s…. Great to have a student with similar interests.”
Meaning I could see myself taking them on a date, wooing them with everything I had, convincing them to come back to my home and let me crawl between their legs… to give into all of my instincts and let my cravings take control as I devour them.
“So, your first assignment—“
Groans once again erupted through the class. We still had another twenty some off minutes of class to go, but it was tradition now for myself to dismiss them early on the first day. As childish as the groans may have seemed, I actually appreciated them; it meant they were comfortable enough to complain— which is actually what you need in a real writer. Complain, complain, complain, and use that negging to push yourself to create!
“Your first assignment,” I repeated with a chuckle. “Is to begin developing your hero. Your main character within your novel. Read the first chapter of Save the Cat! And really ask yourself, what does your hero want with their life? How will they grow throughout your novel to obtain their goals? It sounds simple, but it is actually very challenging.”
They were already beginning to wrap up their items, laptops closing, and zippers on bags zipping once again. “Dismissed, I’ll see you all later this week. Office hours are listed on my door but feel free to email or text me anytime.”
I ignored the students as they were leaving and made my way to my desk, the urge to write another romance burning at my fingertips. My desk was large, heavy, and something I thought would look more welcoming when I first ordered it…
Instead it was a dark and intimidating massive thing that took up more space than it needed. Unfortunately, the effort it took to get into my room… and the no return policy, meant I was stuck with it until I decided to order a new one. If only I didn’t care about being wasteful.
I sat in my plushy deep red chair, kicking my feet under the desk to slide into it. Now I would pretend to look through my schedule, and battle the internal battle raging in my mind that begged me to look out and catch the eyes of a certain horror loving student.
My thoughts were growing more and more unprofessional. Each thought rolling in and consuming my mind with nothing but them. Imagining them pushing my chair back and climbing into my lap, grinding down on me with our lips locked together. Their hand easing into the waistband of my slacks and grabbing my hardening cock. Both of us laughing as the chair slowly wheels away from the desk and thuds against the bookshelf behind my desk.
I still had another class for the day, this one more focused on writing romance novels. Knowing how to find your niche, the dos and don’t of sex scenes, and how to use your own experiences and apply them to your romance. Many students who took this class were obsessed with my novels. Young and desperate to learn from their favorite author, each one dreaming of a relationship beyond professor and student.
My eyes drifted away from my desk and to Y/n, they were still putting their things away, bent over as they adjusted their backpack. I let my gaze linger far longer than I should have, long enough that they eventually turned and caught me. They gave me a small nod and a smile before throwing the bag over their shoulder.
I didn’t even try to hide it as I watched them take the steps out of my class, their clothing hugging them tightly and leaving little to the imagination.
There was something so alluring about them… and I know that I needed to fight these urges…
However…
My laptop powered on quickly, as if it could sense my urgency as I opened a new document. I took a breath as my fingertips flew across the keys, each word coming to me as I wrote down every detail. Their eyes, their hair, their clothing, their smile, those eyes— fuck, those eyes and how they drew me in with no effort at all.
At the top of my document read two words:
The Student
And I knew… that this one would need to be published under a pen name.
