Never forget the Leonov had a Alien (1979) movie night the day before they sent two of their crew to reactivate a ghost ship.

I'd like to think that the Monolith Beings didn't actually plan to destroy Earth at all.
Humanity had learned far too much about them and their experiments, as well as breaking the quarantine opposed on Europa in only 36 years ( not even a millisecond on a cosmic time scale, like telling a cat not to knock something off the table and then watching them immediately do it ) so they decided to scale back their observation of our species since we'd now begun to terraform the Moon, Mars, and Venus as well as expand to the Jovian system, possibly placing a Monolith somewhere nearby on the fringes of the Solar System where we wouldn't detect it.
Have Halman tell them that they're in jeopardy, make them think they've "won" ( any of the computer viruses that would've worked on the operating systems humanity ran by are not gonna work on the almost incomprehensibly advanced billions-year-old alien space machine, sorry ) and then "disappear".
Halman, having told Frank that their Trojan Horse deployed successfully and that they're now 'infected', wouldn't have fled to the Memory Tablet they provided either. Even if The Monolith were to be infected by something malicious, these incredibly powerful beings would of course have plenty of backups and transfers just in case something went wrong, and can't exactly trust a species with incredibly inferior technologies to harbor their observer ( or to revive and forcibly interrogate it ).
Halman likely escaped to another Monolith in case they're needed for communication and is just dormant or occasionally observing Earth as they were before but this time being much more subtle about it.
( Also, while I'm on the topic- did no one give a shit about Floyd?? His consciousness was part of The Monolith too but Frank only provided an escape for Halman- I get that he wasn't as important/needed but he's still Active, what the fuck guys??? )

The weirdest guy I ever met in a church was this boy who referred to “Buzz Aldrin and his husband” going to the moon. I was completely baffled, and when I asked if he’d misspoken, he got really angry and accused me of being deliberately ignorant of the facts. It turned out that he was somehow comvinced that Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were married. It took five Wikipedia articles to convince him otherwise.

Halman again…
Tumblr media
Again the idea of Hal being “absorbed” when they merge, something something metaphor. Dave is the main part of Halmans appearance but Hal is there interspersed through him if you look in his eyes or notice shifts in color. I think there’s sort of a “Tinman” situation as to where his heart to be is the most prominent red glow.
Now if they takes on a more human skin tone the main way to tell is the eyes.
And!
Not exactly shown here but Halman does not entirely look like Dave. He does for the most part if you don’t look too close, some details are a little off, hairs too curled, smile lines are gone etc. Some of it is simply Dave forgetting but some of it is Hal getting a say… he’s never had a body so Dave lets him “character customize” a little … as a treat 💕

He’s in my fucking dreams now. Had a dream where Dave was some sort of professor at ??? Idk it looked like a boarding school. A bunch of kids break into his room yelling about being attacked and he wakes up -> he’s in the nightshirt super old Dave wears but regular age
He’s all “I’ll fend them off” very heroic- runs after them in the hallway and in the center of the stairs halfway down to the bottom is TMA2 and it just gets his ass 😭 like genie style

I’ve been letting the later books get to me a little bit too much. Clarke himself sort of hand waved the inconsistencies with “they’re all different universes” - there’s no set ‘canon’ beyond 2001. It’s the root of all the others. He quite literally invites you to pick and choose your own canon.
Idk I got a little too upset with it all and maybe he was right about hand waving. I feel at peace lmao. To me it can just me 2001 and 2010 with some backstory from 3001 but that’s it.
World peace. 💕

Ok that’s another thing-
In 2001 it sort of implies Dave could close his eyes and concentrate and essentially be across the known universe in seconds. If he wanted to be.
As the series goes on he and the literal alien gods are apparently limited to speeds that are slightly slightly more elevated than ours as it’d still take him a long Ass time to get to the admin just he can afford it because immortality???
Really if we remembered this he could just pop over and go “hey that’s going to be a No on the kill order” and we could spare the save the world plot because the fact that you can defeat them/they’re something to be defeated goes against???? Everything? But I’m saying in a — dhdjsnsmsms
