my favorite free tools for writers
hello, hello! hope you're doing well.
today i am bringing you another list with my top 3 favorite (free!) tools that I find helpful for each phase of writing a novel.
brainstorming phase
Fantasy Names Generator - not only for fantasy (you can also generate real names). this website is just... amazing! it helps you come up with names for characters, places and locations, descriptions, generate traits, outfits (yes, outfits!!), and probably something else you could ever think of.
The Story's Hack - this one is so cool! you can generate names for everything, create your own generator, and practice writing through writing exercises! plus, you can save your generated names to see later, and you earn coins for each idea generated (you can later buy themes - dark, snow, forest, etc)
RanGen - my last favorite generator on this list is RanGen! you can generate plots, appearances, archetypes, love interests, cities, worlds, items, and more.
developing the idea phase
Bryn Donovan - in this blog you can find master lists under the tag "master lists for writers". it is so helpful when you first start developing the characters and need to find the right words to describe them and to find some quirks and flaws!
Writers Write (350 character traits) - again, this is so helpful!
Story Planner - ah, the number of times I've talked about this website... please, PLEASE take a look at it, you won't regret it. this website has literally everything you need to fully develop your idea with outlines for you to fill in step by step.
writing phase
Colleen Houck (80+ barriers to love) - need more romace conflict? there you go!
Cheat Sheets for Writing Body Language - so, you know how your character's feeling, but don't know how he'd physically act? check out this list!
Describing Words - honestly, this is a lifesaver. don't you struggle to find the right word to describe something? well, with this website all you have to do is to type the object you're trying to describe and see which description fits better to you!
revising phase
Language Tool for Google Docs - i know we all have heard about google docs before, but the truth is, it's almost impossible to find free softwares to check grammar and spelling. so, google docs is useful, because it automatically revises it for us, and it's completely free. plus, you can add adds-on, such as "language tool".
Unfortunately, there's only one (free) tool that I actually enjoy for the revising phase. if you know some others, please let me know so that I can try them out and feature in this list.
exporting phase
Google Docs - i find google docs very easy to format and export to .epub, so i'd recommend using it as a free tool.
Reedsy - this is also a free tool available online. all you have to do is to write down each chapter (copy and paste) or import your word document. it will format the document to your liking and export it to pdf, epub and mobi.
that's everything for now! i hope this post was somehow helpful or inspiring!
if you want to see more master lists full of resources, check these:
WEBSITES FOR WRITERS {masterpost}
BEST accounts to follow as a writer
BEST SITES & SOFTWARES TO WRITE FICTION
DIALOGUE IDEAS TO GET RID OF THAT WRITING BLOCK (masterpost)

also, if you are a notion lover just like me, check the free template I just released with everything you need to develop and write your novel!
thank you so much for reading! hope to see you around, and have a nice day <3

The next few days were living hell for Pierre. Everything reminded him of his ex-fiancée. In addition, he had to arrange the wedding and hoped to get his money back. Because he was the one who took care of the financial issue of planning the celebration.
Unfortunately, his family did not leave a dry thread on him, constantly asking him about the reason for Dulcinea's run off from the church.
As if they couldn't leave him alone and end up with one and the same question.
Plus, Charles kept telling him about some girl that he should talk to her, and he honestly couldn't remember anything since his run away from the church on that fateful day.
But when he saw a photo in his gallery with a Y/H/C girl looking to the left, something clicked on his sad mind.
He also remembered that drunk as a bum, he asked her for her phone number. So when he went to the contacts on his phone and saw an unfamiliar name there, he felt a twist of embarrassment in his stomach.
He had no idea what he had said or how he had behaved that afternoon and evening, and he was embarrassed and disgusted with himself.
So he forced himself to write two short text messages in which he introduced himself and apologised for his behaviour.
Unfortunately, he had to wait a long time for the answer, because it came more than two hours later.
He was happy and relieved when he saw the message, the content of which said that Y/N was not angry with him at all and did not blame him for his behavior.
But the text that she thought he had forgotten about her made him huff appalled.
"I never forget, sweets ;)"
He replied yes and then started a completely different topic of conversation. About macaroons. He asked about her favorite flavor of those stupid cookies she had brought with her that day.
Y/L/N nearly spat out the tomato soup she was eating when she read the text. Nevertheless, she wrote him back, and so began their conversation, at the end of which they agreed to meet on the beach of the Bievre River.
When Charles heard from his friend that he was going to meet a girl next week, he thought the friend was joking. He was terribly surprised to find that Gasly was deadly serious.
Of course, Pierre emphasised at every turn that it was not a romantic or sexual meeting - he didn't know this girl and wanted to meet her sober.
And so he did, and Y/N herself turned out to be his first platonic, or so he thought, soulmate.
She was a wonderful friend, and not only in his opinion, because Charlotte Siné herself fell in love with her (reciprocally) at first sight.
Lottie became very close to her and together with Eszter they were confidants of Y/L/N's secrets.
They were also the first people to know about her crush on Pierre.
This happened about five months after their first meeting. Of course, Y/N had liked Gasly before, since they'd really met, but she thought that phase with him would pass.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
The first one to discover it was Balog, who noticed that her best friend's phone wallpaper was no longer with Timothée, whom she had adored since she was about fourteen, but with Pierre, and it wasn't some random Pinterest or Instagram picture of that man. It was a photo the brunette had taken on the day of his failed wedding as Charles was driving them home.
Eszter confided her discovery to Charlotte, who immediately stated that she would come from Monaco to Paris for coffee and told the Hungarian woman to prepare bedding for her.
That night was not easy for Y/N, who admitted her infatuation and cried, thinking that it was not serious that she liked a man whom her fiancée had just left, Pierre would not like her that way and she should not push herself like this relationship because only I will suffer.
And well, she might be right about the last one, but about the first two, according to the girls, she was wrong.
Soon after, Charlotte accidentally spilled a little crush on Charles to Charles, who promised not to tell Gasly.
He lied.
He lied perfidiously.
The very next day he told his best friend about it, who, hearing the source of this fact, only hit him on the head.
Pierre had already noticed that Y/N had become interested in him in a romantic way, but he also didn't want to enter into any relationship at the time. He had just finished dealing with the cancellation of the wedding, and here Leclerc told him to go on a date.
The brunette man really liked Y/N. He found her extremely attractive and thought she was an amazing person.
But he needed time.
Plus, he didn't want Y/L/N to feel like a temporary distraction.
First he had to heal, and only then enter into new relationships.

hey mei, what are your top 10 favourite video games?
1. Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild - Loved everything about it!! The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is amazing, and the story is easy to understand without playing the other games. I have Tears of the Kingdom, but for some reason, I prefer BOTW much more. Also, the soundtrack is absolutely amazing beyond words!! The one that plays whenever a Ruin Guardian spots you sort of gave me PTSD. Whenever I hear it, I can't help but look towards the source of the sound, get up, and run for my life.
2. Ghost of Tsushima - Everything about this game is a 10/10, but I really liked the combat in particular! There are so many ways you can kill someone, from silently assassinating them to poisoning them to beheading them. Even after the main story, there are still so many side quests and content that are just as fun. Jin Sakai is also very cool and I love how he abandoned his honor as a samurai to protect the people.
3. Eastward - Definitely a must-play if you have a Nintendo Switch. The graphics are unique and colorful yet also somewhat mellow at times. The music is great. All of the characters are so fleshed out and lovable. Not to mention the amount of content in the game, where you have at least one other game inside of it. There's the Earthbound(?) (I forgot what it was called) game inside of the arcades which I still haven't been able to finish to this day, and the Octopia DLC (Really cheap by the way, it was 20$ last time I checked) which is basically a whole other farming game.
4. Honkai Impact 3rd - Of course, HI3 is one of my favorite games. The gacha is very generous compared to other games, the rewards are really good, and the rest speaks for itself. Just the story alone would be enough to make it into my top 10. Story aside, I really love the characters and their designs. Their designs reflect their personality perfectly and all of them are just so lovable. Watching Kiana grow up so mature within only 2 years gives me such an odd feeling. I'm so proud of her, but at the same time, where has the "cheerful idiot" Kiana gone? It feels like only yesterday I was playing through the story and she refused to eat the meal Durandal gave her because there was no one to remove the bones of the fish like Mei usually did.
5. Stardew Valley - Call me basic, but I really fell in love with everything about this game. The music in particular makes me feel so oddly nostalgic. I also have a lot of good memories associated with it. It's one of those games that I play on and off but always end up enjoying no matter what, especially with the use of modding.
6. Dead Cells - Loved it! The combat is so fluid, the monsters are all so unique, the animations are so smooth for a pixel art game, and everything about the gameplay is so enjoyable. I'm a sucker for these types of games, honestly. I sadly haven't had the time to play it for a while now, though...
7. Subnautica - I'm not sure if this counts because even though I have a copy of the game, I've made almost zero progress on it. This is mostly only on my list because I'm a really big fan of sea exploration stuff. I was also particularly obsessed with the idea of making the Cyclops fully self sufficient.
8. Minecraft - I had such a big Minecraft phase back then. I would wear merch to school and sing those parodies thinking I was so cool. No wonder I didn't have any friends during that period of my life. Still, I actually wasn't able to buy the game until like... 2018. I think this would be higher on the list if I had people to play it with and if I could recover my account for it.
9. Animal Crossing : New Horizons - I was obsessed with it during the pandemic, but nowadays I play it on and off. As much as I like the older games, being able to freely place furniture outside is life changing. It's also way easier to change outfits because you can actually see what you're wearing. Not to mention, the graphics are way cuter.
10. Osu! - I got into it because a guy I liked did and ended up becoming better than him. I mostly.played standard, but mania was also fun from time to time. I was ranked at around 4 digits before I had to stop because people were complaining that my keyboard was being way too loud. I just didn't have the money to get a new one at the time, so I ended up deleting the game. Really fun, though! There's a mode for everyone.

The Risk
2023’s Most Memorable Moment
Where do I even begin?
Haha. 😅 There’s one last love story—one last heart—that I need to talk about. It may not have been the longest situationship from last year, but it was the most genuine. And if I had to choose from the long list of people I’ve met and dated, I’d always choose him.
Cup of Joe is one band that I discovered and got so addicted to after I broke up with my ex. The song I chose for this moment is my favorite from them, and I thought that it was a song I could dedicate to my ex, but somehow, I always felt that it wasn’t meant for him.
And I was right. It was meant for me and my babe.
Tumblr media
Charles... Babe?
Can you tell me how do I move on from loving someone who has done nothing but love me in the way that I deserve to be loved? You’re the one who has a long list of ex-lovers, maybe you know.
Remember what I said back in December 26? That in my dating life for 2023, you were the cherry on top. It’s not because you’re the one who ended that phase, but because you were the one that hurt the most. I didn’t include your name in the roll call for that memory because I didn’t meet you in Bumble.
I’ve been telling you this before… I’m still in question of what made you decide to transition from us being just casual online friends to potential lovers.
I’ll never forget how we first met in a Zoom call, and then we connected in Twitter. You were my “happy crush” then, which was why I always replied to you whenever you messaged me. Months later, in October 20, you asked for my Instagram account and began pursuing me.
One of the first things you ever told me was that you were not out to your friends or family, and that you value your privacy. This wasn’t a problem for me. Then came a time when you shared to me how much you cried when you watched Heartstopper and Gaya Sa Pelikula because, unlike the characters in these shows, you still haven’t found the courage to come out to the people you love. So I told you, “Everyone has their right time for that.”
After talking consistently for several days, you began telling me repeatedly that you like me, and I held back myself from saying the same to you because I was trying to guard my heart and I didn’t want to give you the idea that I was easy to get. Honestly though, I’d be lying if I say that I didn’t have the same feelings for you.
Of all the guys I dated, you were the only one who wanted to ask permission from my family first before courting me. You knew your place as well, you respected my individuality, and you didn’t ask me to stop seeing other guys—at least, at first 😉.
I really enjoyed talking with you, and I mean all versions of you. The Swiftie. The deep talker. The ranter. The ML player. The “Did you know…” guy. The avid listener. Even the maker of bad “Tito jokes”. Talking to you gives me so much comfort because I know that no matter how savagely honest I can be with what I think or feel, you would never invalidate me. It just shows how modest, kind, and respectful you are.
But you know what’s my favorite version of you? It’s the one who drunk texts me. 😜 Other than the fact that I find it so funny when you chat me while you’re tipsy, I enjoy hearing you speak without your inhibitions. It feels like I’m seeing your heart without the usual barricade of your logical mind. You were drunk when you begged me to stop seeing other guys. And that’s also when you first sent me a voice record of you saying, “I love you.”
I didn’t want to immediately say it back because, at that point, you still haven’t given that much effort for me. But to tell you the truth, it took me a hard time to stop myself from doing so. I needed to use my head now, you know, after being in a relationship where I was the only one exerting the maximum effort to build it.
You said sorry every time you drunk texted me, and told me to don’t mind the things you said. You say sorry quite a lot, actually. When you over slept. When you forgot to say good night. When you took too long to reply. When you think you’ve offended me even when I wasn’t offended at all. And you’re so cute when you ask me, “Galit ka ba? 🥺”
I’ve never been angry at you. That’s one thing that you never got me to do. But you got me to do other stuff, though.
You got me to play Mobile Legends. No one has ever made me do that. Don’t ever think that I didn’t enjoy playing the game.
You made me eat breakfast—and I’m sorry I still miss it often.
You got me through my dilemma with my past work. That’s why you were the first person to know that I’ve passed the application process in QBE, and that I’ve already accepted their offer.
And… there’s many more.
December 15 was one of my most favorite days this year. Obviously because it was the first time we met in person, and you insisted that you’d go visit me here in Cavite City. I love that the first thing you wanted to do when you got here was to visit my mother’s grave, so I took you to her. And I really didn’t have an itinerary for that day, my idea was just to walk you around my hometown—which we did, and I told you stories about my life as we visited various places. You even met Trish who is one of my best friends.
In the afternoon, we went to the cinemas to watch Wonka, which apparently no one wanted to watch that day aside from us and two other folks. It was there when you asked permission if you could hold my hand—of course, I said yes. Then you also asked permission if you could kiss me, and I said, “Of course!” I mean, you already kissed me twice by then, and you said I tasted like sour cream and cheese, thanks to Potato Corner.
I didn’t remember much about how the film Wonka went, but I will never forget how I felt at home when I was with you.
You brought me back to my house that night, and we were so bummed that we missed our city’s annual “Navidad” parade. We were also bummed that we didn’t kiss each other goodbye despite wanting to.
Come the Christmas holidays, I knew something was rather off with you, and I took it as maybe it’s just because you missed your family in the province so much, knowing that you haven’t spent Christmas with them for years and you’re just spending it now with your friends.
Then on the morning after Christmas, you told me your father called you the night before, and that he was disappointed at you. And you told me you’d come here to Cavite to discuss everything personally.
I was in complete unrest the entire day as I waited for you, and when you finally arrived at our gate that night… I knew some shit’s gonna get real.
We walked, your arm over my shoulders, and you told me what happened.
You came out to your parents—told them over chat—in the first week of December. Your mom replied first, but your dad only replied on Christmas day when he called you. You also told them that you were seeing a guy—me. They weren’t mad at you, they didn’t scold you, but you knew they were disappointed.
I hugged you, even when you didn’t want to ‘coz you just wanted us to keep walking.
And then… you could no longer put words to your thoughts. You just kept saying, “Sorry,” every second. So I said, “I know what you’re trying to tell me without you having to say it out loud.”
It was so hard for me to walk then because I felt like my legs had turned to jelly. I wanted to just lie down and cry on the rain sodden asphalt.
You said you took the risk… because I was the risk w🫀rth taking. You said, “Gusto mo bang itago rin kita? ‘Di mo deserve ‘yun.”
You said, “Sorry I’m not strong enough to go against my parents. Sorry I’m not as strong as you.”
We sat on the pavement in front of our house. We talked more. You said sorry many more times, I told you I wanted to fight for you.
You said, “I love you.” I looked at you and said, “I love you too.” I never thought hearing and saying those words could feel so bittersweet. There were millions of butterflies in my stomach, but they evaporated the minute they spread their wings.
A lot more happened that night. Like how we planned to get drunk, but my homophobic father kicked us out, so I just sent you home. I cried to my sister and told her everything. When we’re both in bed in our own rooms, we couldn’t sleep so we just went on a call until we slept and woke up the next morning.
Shit.
You know, my mother taught me me to fight and never give up for the ones I love. When she was dying, she was still fighting up until her very last breath—maybe even beyond. The doctors told us that they did everything they can to revive her because they could feel that she still wanted to live, but her body just couldn’t make it. The last word she said to me before she was taken to the ICU was, “Hindi ko kayo iiwan.”
I am my mother’s son, and I am like her in many ways. I don’t just look like her, I also love like her. And if I can, even when it’s against all odds, I would still fight for the people I love ‘til there’s only one last glimmer of hope.
But yeah. You needed to be firm with your decision, otherwise coming to me that night would’ve been for nothing, according to you.
It takes great courage to come out. You don’t know how much I wish you’re brave enough to stand firm as well with who you are. You’ve taken a risk, partly because of me, and it’s sad that despite you taking that risk, I only ended up becoming the sacrificial lamb.
My friend said I deserve someone better than you because I don’t deserve to experience what you did.
Forgive me if the skeptical and overthinking part of me tries to paint an unpleasant picture of you—chains of what-if’s that map out a reason to make sense of it all. Like… What if you made it up? You know… just to give me a good story that’ll force us to end our relationship before it even started. What if you did it just to get rid of me, for whatever reason reason that maybe? Maybe you got turned off by my complicated family? My blunt honesty? Or maybe you actually found someone else? Maybe… you found out I was worth more than what you initially wanted me to be, so you got scared that I might end up like your many exes and you wouldn’t want that, so you decided to stop pursuing me before we fall deeper into our feelings.
But we’ve already fallen.
Babe, you are the most memorable moment of my 2023, and I’m grateful for that. Thank you for giving me the best and worst days of the year.
Like we said, maybe in a parallel universe, there’s a version of you who’s brave enough to stay with me. And in this universe of ours, maybe we’re only destined to have a sad, beautiful, tragic love affair.
Regardless, if in this lifetime, you finally find the courage to love freely, come back to me and reclaim the heart that was once yours.
I love you, boss, popcorn, hooman, babe.
I LOVE YOU, CHARLES. Always.

Wassap😼 Just wanted to ask what’s your favorite(I yapped quite a lot so you can oppenly yap as much as you like too lol):
- Food - I LOVE ice cream. Like live love laugh ice cream. Especially the one’s that they put in a cone at some cafes. The store bought one’s are alright, but nothing hits more than a fresh cone of ice cream while walking by the beach🔥 I honestly don’t understand people that prefer to eat it from those goofy ahh cups. Like who are you, some 72 year old british woman named Karen?😭
- Animal - umm I love mostly every animal. But dogs are probably my fave. I WOULD like cats more if I wasn’t allergic. Like, I’m used to dogs and was more interested in them as a kid because I just couldn’t interact with cats without getting itchy eyes and uncontrollably sneezing😭 I was like OBSESSED with dogs as a kid. That phase lasted until I was 10-11 years old. But cats are pretty cool too😼
- Colour - oof that must be a tough one. I’m not gonna be edgy and say something like black or white🙄 My fav colour has always been yellow. Although I don’t have that many coloured clothes. My fav fit is all brown😭 But brown IS a shade of yellow so…
- Song/group - ok so I’m really proud that I’ve been getting into lesserafilm because my new friend is also a kpop fan but she prefers gg, specifically lesserafilm, so I’m happy that I finally listened to some of their songs😭 I love “Impurities” and “Guardian” (lesserafilm). My second favourite group is ofc Skz. They made a LOT of 🔥 songs, but “Charmer”, “Domino”, “Surfin’ and “Megaverse” just make my nerves tingle. Enhypen is also one of my favorite groupsss. “Mortal”, “Fate”, “Chaconne”, “One In A Billion”, “Tamed-Dashed” and like a gazillion more😭. As for non-kpop… I really like “Sunflower<Post Malone>”, “Reflections<The Neighborhood>” , “Jenny from the block<Jennifer Lopez>”, most songs from Pastel Ghost’s album “Abyss” and lots of unpopular artists. I can honestly give you my spotify or sum.
Oml I yapped so fucking much😭 Sorry. Feel free to talk even double or triple of that❤️
I LOVE IT WHEN YOU YAP IN MY INBOX ITS SO FUCKING CUTEEEE
FOOD- ahhh im indian so imma be basic and say fried rice cause even though its indo-chinese its literally everywhere in the south so I LOVE ITTTT. only if its a certain kind tho. if its all dry it literally sucks
animal- MY FAVORITE animal changes so much you have no idea but i have to go with 3. dog 2. cat 1. panda 🐼🐼🐼 ITS SO CUTEEEEE- yeah my cousin HATES CATS and when i introduced her to minho she didnt like him cause he apparently "behaved like one" LIKE WTFFFFF THATS ADORABLE
color- purple 💜
thats it...its always been purple
group/song - I USED TO BE OBSESSED WITH LITTLE MIZ BEFORE KPOP and i used to think itzy was a seven membered group for some unknown reason and because of that i was scared to stan them because i used to stan blackpink and stayc so i was A BABY KPOP FAN OKAY but i loved it afterwards. for my favorite song it has to be EASY by le sserafim like its STUCK IN MY HEAD

GET TO KNOW THE MUN.
what made you pick up the current muse(s) you have? I've told this story before but long story short, I was obsessed with the game in middle school. I had a total Alice in Wonderland phase. I started RPing in high school with just oc muses. But then in 2011 I saw other people doing canon characters from different fandoms so I thought I would try writing Alice. I just fell in love with her and had so much fun making her my own character. It's hard to believe that I've been writing her for 13 years.
is there anything you don’t like to write? Smuts not really my thing. I mean I will write it but I'm not good at it. I love reading it, when it's well written and fits into a plot well, but I suck at writing it.
is there anything you really enjoy writing? All things horror! Anything just dark and fucked up is my vibe. I also love anything action and fantasy and lots of angst.
how do you come up with headcanons? I'm always being inspired by other games, books and movies. Honestly I don't have a process. Things just come to me and I'm like "oh that fits Alice!"
do you write in silence or do you play music? It depends on my mood. Most of the time I have a movie or a show on. A lot of the times I like having music too. I gotta have background noise when doing anything.
do you plan your replies or wing them? A bit of both! Like the above answer, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I'll read a reply to a thread and don't write mine right away and just think about it all day and come up with an outline in my head. Other times I'll just come up with a reply on the spot. That's why my activity is so sporadic.
do you enjoy shipping? Yes! Though it's not easy with Alice since she's demisexual and is heavily affected by her past and that makes it hard to trust people. But I am always wanting her to find some sort of connection.
what’s your alias/name? Mad
age? 30
birthday? July 12
favorite color? Purple and green
favorite song? Wait For It - Leslie Odom Jr. (from Hamilton)
last movie you watched? The Tutor
last show you watched? Law and Order SVU
last song you listened to? reckless driving by Lizzie McAlpine
favorite food? Mashed potatoes
favorite season? Fall
do you have a Tumblr best friend? Oh man I've had so many through the years. Like I said, I've been here for a long time. Sadly all of my partners and besties have moved on with their lives. Currently I don't have a singular bestie. I have a lot of friends on this blog and my others that I love RPing with and talking to outside of tumblr!

OK! We're into Mt. Gulg now, and boy this is gonna be a doozy. I'm doing the dungeon and subsequent trial all in one go, so bear with me for the longer breakdown. In fact, I'm gonna cut here just because it's *that* long, and it's also late night ramble flavored. You've been warned.
The music for Mt Gulg is this fanfare-y thing that really hypes up that this is the end of the long battle we've been fighting, while still leaning into that "holy" theme that sin eaters are associated with. It's got hints of the other themes we've heard throughout the expansion, too.
For NPC commentary... I took Thancred and the twins again. Thancred comments on the first boss - if you watch the ShB trailer, they've fought before. I'm sure if had brought Ryne in, she'd have something to say too. Mechanics are decent and mildly annoying for melee dps, but not much to write home about.
Box- I mean, Boss #2 is much more... abstract. Thancred is still the only one with anything to say. Might come back through these later with the others... I enjoy the gimmick for this one the most, having to watch the faces on the evil Rubik's Cube to know where safety is.
The final boss is also Vauthry's last line of defense, and, according to Alphinaud, his "favorite". As we've delved deeper into this dungeon, the landscape has shifted from brown mountain rock to gold and white Light-built finery, a mental image of what Vauthry wants the world to become made manifest. The boss itself is lots of echoed attacks, and it gets a "oh god" out of 10 for how much I have to move around to avoid stuff. Very fitting for where it's at in the story.
So we've beaten Vauthry's defenses, and now we get to stab the man himself... right after we get very proud of some character growth expressions. Alphinaud has recognized that at some point, there is no use trying to talk your way out of a fight. Ryne has accepted Minfilia's legacy completely and is determined to take care of it and the people of the First with all her power, and as a result now has the confidence to speak not only for herself, but for the people. She's come a LONG way from when we first met the quiet, scared girl in Lakeland.
Unfortunately, we can't take the NPCs with us to beat up Vauthry. Not enough for a full party, and they have to watch my back. So... PCs it is!
I don't mind this fight, but honestly Titania was significantly more interesting. There's a couple of add phases, a "find the gap" moving danger puddle, and lots of self-righteous voice lines that I'm going to be hearing in my dreams tonight. I did not, however, get *any* time to listen to the music to see if it felt right for the fight, because it wasn't an NPC party.
The mid fight transformation from blob to "why is he this pretty" is not the most horrifying thing that ShB has done (that's reserved for Tesleen, dammit), but it's close. It's easy to miss how it starts if you're zeroed in on your rotation, but his back literally splits open to kick the change off. I hate it. He gets very bright and stabby after that, but is still no match for the full WoL party that we brought against him.
And then... I'm going to bed. We'll deal with all of the impending emotional trauma tomorrow.

ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘɪᴄᴋ ᴜᴘ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴜʀʀᴇɴᴛ ᴍᴜꜱᴇ(ꜱ) ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ?
It’s about as simple as Naoto is my favorite character.
Funnily enough, I had seen P4 back in my anime hater phase. Only the first three hours and I thought it was the stupidest thing ever. Flash forward to summer 2017 and I decided to watch the anime adaptation. It was rushed, but fun and tickled my silly brain.
The moment Naoto showed up, I thought wow, he looks like a prick. I love him already. I watched it subbed so I am an advocate for Romi Park’s Naoto.
And for why I picked her up, well, I actually wanted to write a whole fanfic about Naoto’s POV in Inaba and maybe the spinoffs because this fandom is lacking in Naoto perspective fics. I found out about RP through a friend in a small discord server. I decided to use RP as a way to solidify my take on Naoto, so I made this blog around 2019, although it didn’t get it off the ground until April 2020.
I have made zero progress on that fanfic aside from a few drabbles I am perpetually unhappy with, so mission failed? Against all odds, I’ve stayed for much longer than I thought I would have, so mission success?
Also fun fact, while I wanted to write Naoto and practice with her, I initially wanted to jump into the RPC as Yu because he’s a blank slate, so he must be easy to write. Seeing as how my Yu muse is currently on hiatus, I dread knowing what would have happened in that timeline.
ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ?
For all that is holy, smut. It doesn’t offend me, but I cannot write it. At most, I’d be very purple and describe feelings that would arise from such a thing than actually describing what’s going on. Never mind the fact that I typically write Naoto while she’s 16-18, so smut is a no go there.
I’m also not a fan of antagonistic relationships that aren’t plotted out. Not every muse is going to get along with Naoto, but if she dislikes your muse and there’s no opportunity to talk to them ever again, she will take that opportunity and coolly withdraw.
Action scenes are the bane of my existence yet I must work on them to improve further hrhrhrhrhghghghg
I can’t think of anything else at the top of my head, so whenever it comes up, we’ll find out.
ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ?
I find that my best writing comes from moments where Naoto is introspective, which ends up being hurt/comfort or angst. Really, I don’t have a specific favorite when it comes to writing. I find plenty of situations can reveal things about the muses I write.
I have a really huge bias for people who humor my arcana.swap AUs. I’m in the process of revamping some verse info, but I enjoy putting Naoto into a Yosuke role, for example, and seeing what about her changes, and what stays.
Even with different writing styles, it’s a challenge for myself to try and match—besides my fanfic brain wanting to try and keep things consistent. Third person present, third person past, even first or second person threads, I’d love to try those.
ʜᴏᴡ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴꜱ?
Honestly, thinking about the source material is enough to get me going. So much about Naoto is never stated outright or left implied, courtesy of her last party member disease. I also try to keep Japanese culture in mind while I write headcanons and characterize her, so I guess you could say looking at the culture is another source of inspiration. There are moments while writing replies that a headcanon will hit me. I’ve never been a fan of saying ‘Naoto is this because I said so’ so that’s why my headcanons are usually mini essays and why I am slow.
Sometimes music gives me inspiration. Just sometimes. Speaking of...
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ɪɴ ꜱɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴏʀ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀʏ ᴍᴜꜱɪᴄ?
I’m probably going to be an odd one out and say silence. There are moments where I have a song playing in the background, but those moments are rare because I end up focusing on the song more than I do my writing. I’ll think about the mood it sets, how it relates to Naoto, have some stupid fictional MV playing in my head, all of it distracts me from actually writing lol. Whenever I listen to music during writing, it’s never when I’m in the actual act of writing. I use it for mood setting and ideas.
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʀᴇᴘʟɪᴇꜱ ᴏʀ ᴡɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ?
Unless a thread is plotted, I wing replies most of the time. I curse my brain for coming up with great lines while I’m taking a shower and then it evaporates from my head like steam.
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ꜱʜɪᴘᴘɪɴɢ?
I do, but while I have a few OTPs, shipping is not a priority on this blog. I’m more interested in giving Naoto friendships and a few familial ones than actively seeking out romance. I’m pretty picky and shipping with Naoto is a massive slow burn, I cannot stress that enough. As my rules say, if you want to ship with Naoto and only that, you are in for a very bad time here.
I am multi-ship though, so I don’t do exclusives when it comes to shipping.

ᴡʜᴀᴛ'ꜱ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴀʟɪᴀꜱ/ɴᴀᴍᴇ?
Liz. Elizabeth is my actual name. The confusion to be had when people talk about P3!Elizabeth is very real. It’s not the most unique name, but I couldn’t figure out anything else because I am not creative :]
ᴀɢᴇ?
I hate to say this but you could look at the current year and figure out my age. I am truly and deeply sorry. So at the time of writing this, I am 24 and shaking in horror at the thought.
ʙɪʀᴛʜᴅᴀʏ?

ꜰᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ ᴄᴏʟᴏʀ(ꜱ)?
Blue...
ꜰᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ ꜱᴏɴɢ(ꜱ)?
I don’t have a favorite song exactly, but the DGS soundtrack has been in my head ever since I played the game. This track is a light spoiler if you haven’t finished it, but it has this sense of urgency while not being extremely fast, in short, Naoto on the job. It carries hints of a song that I’ve associated with Naoto’s parents and Naoto herself, so in a very vague way, there’s totally a bit of legacy in here, trust. But I also like the unused investigation theme. It’s hard boiled, like Naoto and her hard boiled detective novels.
Did you know I wanted to make a DGS/Meiji era AU for Naoto after completing the game? Yeah...
ʟᴀꜱᴛ ᴍᴏᴠɪᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀᴛᴄʜᴇᴅ?
The thirteenth Detective Conan movie...
ʟᴀꜱᴛ ꜱʜᴏᴡ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀᴛᴄʜᴇᴅ?
Detective Conan. It’s very long and I’m only surviving because I’m using xerblade’s guide. I am very committed to this task.
ʟᴀꜱᴛ ꜱᴏɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ʟɪꜱᴛᴇɴᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ?
If we exclude the songs I put above and MGMT’s When You Die because that one’s been stuck in my head, veil, or Fire Force’s first ending. The lyrics are very Naoto.
ꜰᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ ꜰᴏᴏᴅ?
It changes frequently, but I will say I’ve had takoyaki and okonomiyaki in my head for months.
ꜰᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ ꜱᴇᴀꜱᴏɴ?
I hate being cold, so I like summer.
ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴀ ᴛᴜᴍʙʟʀ ʙᴇꜱᴛ ꜰʀɪᴇɴᴅ?
If we exchanged discords and we talk a lot, congrats, we are friends.

2, 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 18, 19 for Eddy (I know I'm too late, but I would like to know, please).
Thanks for the ask!!! No worries about it being late:) Good to chat (even if I talk a load of bologna 😁)
Under the cut
2.Favorite canon thing about this character?
Because I can't think of anything better right now, I'll say his seemingly vintage taste in music. Although maybe it ties in with everything he owns being vintage hand-me-downs. And on second thought, it's hard to say if Barry White and Tom Jones are supposed to be old-school in-universe, considering the kids' idea of party music is 60s surf rock haha.
6.What's something you have in common with this character?
You know, I always think I'm mostly an Ed and an Edd, but then I think "maybe we all have the three Eds deep down inside of us 😁" guess I sometimes like to imagine situations in which I could be a show off/be funny in front of an audience... A very Eddy desire.
7.What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
I always love older fanart of him just having that slightly disheveled look and maybe smoking a cigarette, looking cool 😁 makes me imagine him with that slightly chiller demeanor (assuming he grows out some of his temper and controls his euphoria whenever he's got some big idea hehe)
8.What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
Boring answer, but like everyone else I have not much interest in negative adult Eddy portrayals where the creator blatantly doesn't take the BPS developments into account. Give this kid a chance for chrissakes! Thankfully this is limited to some more, ahem, 'casual' fans 👀
14. Fashion aesthetic for this character.
In my lack of fashion sense, I'm just gonna mention a picture in my mind...leather jacket? (Maybe because of @torra-and-the-toons 's design?) Coupled with worn baggy jeans...
And is it weird I can see Eddy looking good in that sweater/collar-shirt combo if he were to dress more elegant? I swear I've seen it somewhere in fanart. Or him just wearing a hoodie... Is there look Eddy can't pull off??? Talk about a stubby no-neck chump 😎
15. Favorite ship?
It's... EddEddy, isn't it. Interestingly, it was never my OTP, and I wasn't interested in it when I first got in the fandom, but I slowly made myself learn to appreciate it. Nowadays it's certainly a ship I "default" to with those two characters. On the other hand I once went through a KevEddy phase... I still have a soft spot for it (no doubt thanks to lovely fanart by @mar-saturn and @chocowhomps ). It's also very interesting to me that there's at least 3 people I know of currently in the fandom (or who were actively in the fandom in the last year or so) who managed to ship both EddEddy and KevEddy, mmm 🧐...
18. Relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
First thing that comes to mind is his brief mentoring of Jimmy, even if it's a negative influence. "They grow up so fast... *dries tear*" And his one-on-one friendship with Ed is interesting to think about, especially how it might have started considering Edd supposedly came a little later in the picture (not by much though as they were still very young)
Also his crush on Nazz is kinda cute... I headcanon they'll be easy friends once they're a little older :)
19. Relationship they have in canon with another character that you don't like?
Honestly I'm stumped! Can't think of anyone right now haha. Maybe his disrespect of Rolf's culture/hospitality, if that's a thing? But I can't say if that's necessarily despicable or just part of the character's writing in certain episodes, or what.
Thanks for the ask again!

I know I never post and this has been the only thing I’ve done on tumblr. But do we share a live for difficult games?
My favorite game (celeste) is tough as nails and the adrenaline rush for beating a fast paced level can be unreal.
But I don’t have that deep intimacy you do of wanting to be stabbed by the goddess of rot.
Like I never want to plummet myself into a bunch of spikes or sharp crystals for Madeline to have a safe landing.
I've never played celeste but I've heard that it's really really good. The game looks cute, but this is not my kinda genre.
You know, it's not just about the stabbing, although also that. It's about who's stabbing and what kind of energy they possess. Being defeated can be kinda exciting, especially when over the course of 11 hours of restless attempts you develop some kind of personal relationship with the one you're fighting? This is not just Malenia.
In Dark Souls 3 there was Friede, a tall scythes-weilding lady with frost and black flame magic. In Bloodborne there was Lady Maria with her blood and fire infused blades. From Software really made those fights majestic, fast-paced and exciting. But what is more important, is how the bosses are characterized through the way they fight. Friede is snappy, technical, careful, keeps her distance until you make a mistake, only to shred you to pieces with a single combo or a very powerful hit. Not to mention her spectacular grab attacks and frost magic. The latter characterises her as, well, cold-hearted and unfeeling, even her voice is kinda chilling.
Maria is aggressive, ruthless, she does not fuck around, she goes straight for the kill, oftentimes doing so in a single well-timed hit. She's more of a storm, a force of nature that demands that you play by her rules. The fire attacks in the last phase really charactetise her as a fierce huntress who fights with burning passion.
And Malenia, in my opinion, is the best one at characterisation through her moveset. She tells you that she's never known defeat, and when you fight her it's very easy to believe her. She's relentless as well as technical, which forces you to fight at her own pace, and it's very difficult to keep up with her! You can't take a single moment you spend breathing in the same room as her for granted, because at any moment she can just kill you for making a single mistake.
My point is, being around those intimidating ladies is very very exciting. They're so strong and beautiful, and you really pick up quickly who they are as a person while fighting them, without a single spoken word.
As you can see I'm kinda trying to sidestep the question about my stabbing fantasy.. I have no idea what to tell you honestly. I wish there was a coherent explanation for it but there is none. I'm just fucked up in the head i guess ¯\_༼ ಥ ‿ ಥ ༽_/¯

Mega Man X6 Ending
The final stage is little more than the boss rush + the final boss thankfully. It’s got some pretty creepy and atmospheric music though.
And yeah obligatory mention to how X6 has a seriously awesome soundtrack, probably the most diverse in the franchise. Most Mega Man games tend to stick to a single genre, usually either rock or techno. X6 is mostly rock but also throws in jazzy pieces, relaxing tracks like Rainy Turtloid, Shield Sheldon’s sounds pretty magical, Metal Shark Player is oppressively atmospheric and Gate 3′s creepy.
Honestly Zombie Sigma might just be the most interesting thing that has ever been done with the character, which is prety damn sad on its own (Insert obvious joke about how he’s a nice metaphor for the state of the X series at this point)
People always say that he’s easy but honestly his second phase is a mess with all the shit he just flings at you, it feels like the best way to win is to just tank hits and keep hitting him back while also destroying as many of his minions as you can in order to make them drop health to keep you going.
Like before the ending differs depending on the character who beats Sigma
I hate X’s ending.
I know it may seem strange, but it really does piss me off.
I don’t like any of the endings of the X games because they usually just amount to the characters angsting over how “the cycle of violence keeps going ì, when will this war ever end blah blah blah” and it’s just another example of the X series using useless angst that won’t really go anywhere for “deep” storytelling.
On paper I should prefer what X6 gives us here, as it’s a more upbeat, hopeful ending about how the characters won’t give up and will try their best to rebuild the world and stop whatever threat will come their way. These tend to be some of my favorite kinds of endings: the light at the end of a dark tunnel
However in this case it doesn’t work for 2 reasons:
1) It’s too cheery given the situation: Gate was Alia’s friend turned mad, she’s seeing his corpse right there and yet she’s all smiles like she doesn’t give a shit
The same applies to X, y’know the pacifist who’s all about not wanting to use violence and wishing he could solve things peacefully? Why is he all smiles as he drags the corpse of his friend’s former colleague around?
2) This isn’t ACTUALLY a happy ending if you ask me. It’s actually a pretty cynical one. This wasn’t supposed to exist. This whole game wasn’t supposed to exist and only does in order to keep milking the series down to the last drop, so when the characters act all cheery and hopeful about how they will “fight for the future” and stuff it doesn’t feel like a message of hope to me, it feels like Capcom quite literally telling us “yeah there are more games on the way and we’ll keep making more ‘till this cow’s a dried up husk of its former self. have fun!”
Oh but then we get to the REAL juicy one! Let’s take a moment to talk about Zero’s ending!
youtube
So on its own merits there aren’t any real issues with this ending: Zero decides to go into stasis for a 100 years in order to have the Maverick Virus inside his body analysed so that scientists can find a cure. It’s basically a tie-in to the then upcoming Zero series.
However many issues arise as soon as you remember that X7 and X8 later became a thing.
And Zero is in both of them.
This makes no sense
The most common (and likely) interpretation is that this ending takes place many years into the future at the very end of the X series. However there are issues even here.
It just makes sense logically for this ending to take place not long after X6 because...Zero now KNOWS he’s a carrier. He know that he’s a danger and doesn’t want to create problems for the world.
If we go by the interpretation that this ending takes place way later we have to assume that it took Zero YEARS to figure out that “Yeah maybe I should let scientists study me instead of running around the world with this Virus inside of me”, which not only makes no sense for the other characters, who seem to have no issues with this and never bring this up again (sans some small mentions in X8), but it’s also nonsensical for Zero himself, since he’s always shown himself to be perfectly ok to sacrifice himself for the greater good, ever since X1!
Some people take this to mean that, evidently, X7 and X8 cannot be canon, compounded by the fact that they’re not rererenced in the Zero series.
Guys.
No.
Them not being referenced means very little, characters like Alia, Signas, Dynamo and Gate are also never mentioned across the Zero games, so the likes of Axl and Lumine never being mentioned doesn’t immediately make them non-canon
Besides everyone knows that some last minute changes had to be made to the story of the Zero series in order to accomodate for the retcons introduced by X6, such as Zero being resurrected and Sigma still being around, so why should X7 and X8 be so impossibly non-canon or whatever, given that they’re far less convoluted plot-wise? If there’s a game that they could’ve easily written off as non-canon that’s X6, given its retcon-riddled plot and the fact that it was the first game to have absolutely zero input from Inafune, and yet X6 is 100% canon to the Zero series.
I’d much rather keep X7 and X8 as canon rather than imagine a split timeline like some fans do. ‘Cause that’s what the series needs right? A Zelda timeline.
So how do we explain all of this mess?
Well here’s my theory:
How does the Maverick Virus spread?
Yeah it can spread via airborne means like we see in X5, but how does it jump from robot to robot?
Because we never really see this happen do we?
I mean Zero has been a carrier ever since before X1 and yet, depsite the Zero Official Complete Works claiming that he’s been unwillingly spreading the Virus while working as a Hunter, we never see anyone being infected by him, and he’s constantly in contact with a lot of people! Alia, Signas, fuck, Colonel and Iris! And yet none of them has ever been infected!
The only time Zero has ever infected someone was with Gate, who came into contact with one of Zero’s remains, seemingly some of his internal components, and maybe Sigma when the latter fractured his head gem.
My theory is that the only way for the Virus to pass between Reploids is if one comes into contact with an infected Reploid’s interior mechanisms. It’s kind of like how real life viruses spread to other hosts through contact with infected liquids like blood or saliva. This would explain why Zero is still able to work as a Hunter with no issue, since there would technically be no issue being in his presence, and the Virus would only get a chance to infect another if he were to bet injured.
This is still problematic though since his work literally requires him to fight and get injured pretty much every day, so he’s still a danger and there should be a plethora of safety measures: what happens when he returns to base all damaged? Does he get put in quarantine? Does he have to wear a robotic face mask? Since the Virus can even infect simple machinery like we see in X5′s intro how the fuck do the Hunters even repair him without someone or something, even simple equipment, getting infected? Does he NOW get to repair himself?
Sighhhhhhhhhh.......

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks..
tbh this is extremely hard to answer because I have many interests. I’m sure I’ll feel bad when I remember the hundred other characters that should have made the list. I’m not putting any Ikuhara characters because it’d been too hard to pick and honestly I’d have to go through each work individually.
1. Tenma from Naoki Urasawa’s Monster. I don’t claim to be a complicated person, alright. I just think he’s nice. every time I read Monster I get more attached to him like a little baby duck, which is what all the other characters in that story do as well so I’m valid. trying to put it into words is hard--he’s just an alluring combo of pathetic, ridiculous, cool, strong, and kind. plus he kinda becomes a religious figure by the end and I’m a sucker for that shit.
Tumblr media
2. Xie Lian from TGCF/Heaven Official’s Blessing. I read the novels this summer after watching the donghua. I was just expecting a decent BL, but what I got was epic historical supernatural fiction (and BL). Xie Lian is such an impressively written character. his story helped me deal with my own fall from grace, as it were, and was overall cathartic and engaging. plus he’s my type. step aside Hua Cheng, I’d die for him first.
Tumblr media
3. Orel from Moral Orel. I love this show a lot because of its focus on the cruelty and hypocrisy of WASP America, and Orel is relatable for struggling to understand the bulltshit answers he gets to all his questions. he’s a lot more innocent than I was as a kid, but I think his kind of purity plays well against the satirical, dark edge of the show.
Tumblr media
4. Reki from Haibane Renmei. most of the reasons I love her aren’t revealed until the very end of the show. I’ll say that I love her because she’s the ultimate manifestation of the story’s themes of guilt and redemption.
Tumblr media
5. Ishida from Koe no Katachi. I just finished rereading this manga recently. if you want a character who does wrong, suffers, tries to change himself, but finds it isn’t that easy, Ishida is your man. he’s such a funny, well-written teen boy, but also someone I think anyone from any background can see themselves in--the good and the bad.
Tumblr media
6. Naruto from... you know. Naruto was the first anime I became really obsessed with, when I was in middle school, and Naruto himself is the first character I can remember becoming attached to in an intense, lasting way. I loved him so much and I still have that attachment to him. he’s so, so cute, and so, so lovable. when I’m done with my first round of Ikuhara vids, I’m going to download Naruto so I can make my friend a Sasuke fancam and I’m also gonna make a Naruto edit just for me :)
Tumblr media
7. Miyuki from Naoki Urasawa’s Happy! I’ve read everything by Urasawa except for Yawara, and I’m one of the only people who seems to have read Happy! I gotta say, would I pick it as one of his best works? no. I love everything he’s done, but something like 20th Century Boys or Billy Bat is clearly a more serious, meaningful story than Happy!, which comes out of his transition phase between writing romantic comedy sports manga and his later thrillers. however... Happy! is one of those works which makes me lose my mind regardless of quality. and Miyuki, the main character, is just so damn adorable. I find her a very appealing, sweet character. beyond that, kind of like Monster, the entire story is about people trying to break her down, but she refuses to ever give up and I love that sort of thing when played right.
Tumblr media
8. Ged from Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series. I am still digging into Le Guin’s body of work but I’ve read most of her novels and short story collections. I could absolutely make a top ten list with just characters from her books. however, I managed to narrow it down to just three from this list, all from the Earthsea books. Ged is the only character who appears in all six books, and the reader gets to experience close the entire course of his life. he starts as an arrogant, careless boy and grows into a wise man. Le Guin decided not to leave him after he does his final great act, and his story continues after he loses his power. Tehanu, the fourth book in the series, is probably my favorite book I’ve ever read, I’ve thought about writing an analysis comparing it with RGU, and one of its main themes is life after loss and trauma. his story interwines with the next two characters on this list.
Tumblr media
9. Tenar from Earthsea. like Ged, we get to see most of her life throughout the books. book 2 contains her coming of age story, while Tehanu features her as a widow, struggling between the life of an ordinary woman and her status in the mythology of Earthsea. she brings so much fire, mirth, and strength to the series. she’s someone I wish I had in my life, and if you really pressed me, she’s my favorite character Le Guin ever wrote.
Tumblr media
10. Tehanu from Earthsea. this character is a strange one to try to write about. I’ve seen people criticize her writing by saying there’s nothing to her, she’s just a vessel for the story. but I can’t agree. as someone who’s known people who went through severe childhood trauma, I think that Tehanu is written with thought and care. I love how unnerving and unknowable she is, but also how she is written like she’s any other child. the ending of her story in the final book made me sob and sob and sob.

Preferential Treatment: Partial Decree Commentary
Tumblr media
Back again for the commentary! This week was such a blast, honestly. You all made killer designs, and while this is certainly not a contest I’ll run very often, it did give me lots of new ideas for other contests, so stay tuned. It is interesting that people heavily focused on the copying aspects, when I honestly wouldn’t even say that’s my absolute favorite part of magic. I’m curious to hear thought processes behind these designs, so if anyone wants to share how they came up with their idea, I would love to hear about it. Anyways, here’s Wonderwall.
Tumblr media
The Tattered Timepiece by @dabudder
At first glance, this is an incredibly cool card. I love the idea of repeatedly taking extra turns but losing a bit of each one, essentially leaving you with nothing by the end of it. You have to use it very carefully, but the concept is cool. However... it runs into some logistical issues. First off, skipping your end phase also involves skipping your cleanup, which is not something black-border magic ever wants to get into, since “Until end of turn” effects would stick around, and damage wouldn’t be removed. In addition, There are cards that skip either untap, upkeep, or draw steps, but not all of them all at once. I think this design would be better serviced by looking at existing “skip step or phase” cards like Fatespinner, and picking some appropriate choices from among those. However, the logistics issues don’t detract from the fact that this is still as super cool card.
Tumblr media
Absolute Decree by @nicolbolas96
One of our few non-blue cards this week (I was going to ask if I’m that easy to figure out, but I guess it is literally in my username). I do like flexibility with removal, and I do like political maneuvering, and this has a good amount of both of those! However, I just can’t see any situation in which your opponent ever lets you copy the spell. I understand that the intention was probably “Hey, if you let me copy it, I’ll blow up this other thing controlled by player 3”, but... I’m not sure there would be many people likely to agree with that when the original copy is pointing at one of their permanents. I’m not necessarily sure what the fix is, but this card relies on blowing up someone’s key piece, and then asking them nicely for a favor, which doesn’t seem like it will go the way you want it to 90% of the time.

Nadan, Dean of Imitation by @yd12k
Okay, so between the name, the art, and the flavor text, I’m a little confused. Is this supposed to be a different iteration of Naban, but was a typo? Is it Naban’s evil twin? A parody? I definitely appreciate the pandering to the judge, but I’m confused about who exactly this is supposed to represent. The ability is one that I’m honestly surprised we haven’t seen before, though it feels more at home on a mid-cost enchantment than a 2-mana legendary creature. There could still be lots of fun things to do with it, but I think the potential card advantage is way too much for this to be coming out of the command zone on turn two. However, bonus brownie points for playing to the audience.

Unseelie Meddling by @hiygamer
There’s a reason I have Mystic Reflection listed as my favorite blue card, and this plays in a lot of the same space. I do like the attempt to broaden it from just creatures, but as others have stated, this gets into some weirdness with auras that can make this “destroy target nonland permanent” in certain scenarios, which... yeah, that unfortunately needs some black to justify. Equally unfortunately, the workaround is clunky, so at least you stuck to your guns. Beyond that issue, I like this card, though I feel like 3 mana might be too expensive for something that doesn’t give you any nice ETB triggers, and only lasts for the turn. I think it could have either been cheaper or more permanent, though with the latter there’s obviously memory issues. Also, WOW that’s some dark art direction. I love it, reminds me of some of the older magic art.

Hysteric Laughter by @col-seaker-of-the-memiest-legion
It is interesting that we got so much Cipher this week, considering... I don’t actually care for it that much. Yes, I like instants and sorceries, and I love copying them, but Cipher always felt like there were too many moving parts for my liking. This one is pretty good at addressing some of my issues with it- it’s simple, effective, and easy to tack on to any creature without making them a huge magnet for removal. However, over time, that card advantage can really add up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this should cost 4 mana like Last Thoughts, but I’m not totally sure if 1 mana is the right place for this either, especially since an evasive one-drop into one of these is two cards right away, and that multiplies if you have more copies. Cipher as a Maestros mechanic is also interesting- obviously they like copying instants and sorceries, but it doesn’t seem to me that they would match with the skulking, cryptic flavor of Cipher. They seem pretty loud and proud. However, like I said before, you’ve done a good job of making me reconsider Cipher, so that in and of itself is a commendation.

Quell, the Living Storm by @helloijustreadyourpost
This card is a very interesting cross-section between Elemental tribal and spellslinger, which I don’t think is something we’ve seen before? The power buff not only makes it so that you can swing with these guys pretty hard, but also enables the casualty ability, which is some neat self-synergy. This guy clearly wants to be a commander, I’m just having a hard time picturing what you would want in the deck. Elementals obviously, but what kind of instants and sorceries? The red ones that make more temporary elementals, I guess? Don’t get me wrong, this is a cool card, and could definitely see print, but it’s a bit too linear for my tastes. There are some hints of Ball Lightning tribal in here, which could have been really cool if you doubled down on that a bit more? I dunno. However, big bonus points for being the first custom card designer ever to put “storm” in the name of a card that has nothing to do with Storm.

Mirageherd Matriarch by @pocketvikings
Noncreature/ small creature token payoff. Iiiiinteresting.... I like it. There’s some obvious parallels here between this and Poppet Stitcher/ Poppet Factory, but obviously it has a bit of a different intended use. I’m not totally sure I get the flavor of how an elephant turns Treasures and Clues into other elephants? Some flavor text definitely could have helped here. Also, the repeatable investigate does make for some nice creature sac fodder, but in a deck with literally any other token generation, it would never happen. Maybe it could be something like “if you didn’t create a token this turn”? Anyways, lots of cool shenanigans to be done with this, especially since there are some noncreature tokens you can make for pretty cheap rates, but I think it straddles the right power level.

Throk, Prismari Alumnus by @snugz
I had to do a double take at this card because I thought it was full hybrid for a second, which would have been a bit pie-breaky, but this is styled after the strixhaven cycle, so all good there. However, for future reference, those cards do use a gold frame to avoid confusion. Onto the mechanics- mass granting your spells Cipher for just 4 mana seems very very strong. Cipher cards, though a bit overly cautious, were costed as much more expensive than their non-Cipher counterparts, because you get to repeat them several times without having to spend cards each time. Add that to the natural evasion granted by ciphering cards, and you have one heck of a powerhouse for 4 mana. It’s still a really cool idea, but it needs some limits on it to make it work nicer. Maybe the first spell each turn has Cipher? Or you pay N as you cast it to gain Cipher? There’s options here, but I do think it needs to be toned down a bit.

Well of Discordance by @hypexion
This card went through some pretty major iterations in the Discord, and there were some solid ideas throughout the process. I do like where this card started. However, this would just be an absolute mess of triggers- essentially, untapping with this would turn a commander game into a 40+ minute game of solitaire as you debate whether or not you have enough mana to continue the cascade chain or not. My issue isn’t the power level, per se- I think as a 6-mana legendary artifact that costs an extra one per spell, it’s in a good spot. I just think there’s too much decision paralysis that comes along with it. Additionally, I can also see this confusing some players who think there’s a period between seeing what you get off the cascade trigger and casting it. That happens immediately, though, so you have to grant cascade blindly. All in all, it’s a neat card, but very complex and not fun to play against.

Gossamer Twin by @nine-effing-hells
“Clone with downside” is always a bit of a fun concept to play around with, though it’s hard to beat Phantasmal Image. Making it more vulnerable to damage but not necessarily to spot removal is a cool take on it, and I do like the flavor of some sort of miniature thread-like copy of something much larger. However, there’s not much to it beyond that. The card feels very plain, and not too exciting. Maybe if it overlaid flying in addition to the abilities of the copied creature? I think flavor text helps sell this too, since Gossamer twin is such a cool, evocative name that is begging for some contextualization. It’s a clever card, and definitely one that tickles my fancy, but I don’t see myself having fun playing this one.

The Bolstering Matrix by @dimestoretajic
That sure is an effect that’s a dream come true for anyone who likes cloning and copying. Obviously, I love this effect. It’s great, and I would love to build around it. However, it’s hard not to compare this to my main man Riku of Two Reflections. For the same mana value, you get the same effect- except you have to pay two mana every time you use it, and its stapled onto a fragile 2/2 instead of a harder-to-remove enchantment. This definitely needs to either be more expensive (in which case you’ll have likely played all your good creatures before this comes down) or have some sort of other limitation (creature type? Mana value? Paying mana like Riku?). The second ability is the cherry on top- I do like that one quite a bit better, and it’s a nice complement to the other one. However, the power level of this needs to be adjusted before I can truly love it.

Bankshot Technique by @deg99
You said “Hypothetical 2-headed Giant set on Strixhaven themed around Mage Tower”, and I fell in love. You went into my brain and pulled out a set that I literally want more than anything I’ve ever wanted in my life. And the card is neat! It’s just not the best proof-of-concept for this amazing set idea. Moving counters is solid- feels like a Quandrix-y thing to do, and it’s established as a possible UG hybrid effect (even though this is also a gold card like the Cipher legend above), and the team reference is neat. I do wonder if there’s a way to clean it up, but that’s not my main problem. I just don’t see demonstrate working in a 2HG set, since so many people would assume they can give their teammate a copy to get two copies themselves. It just works against the concept of 2HG, which is unfortunate, cause the concept is cool. Also, this seems like a rough card to have 3 copies on the stack of- counters would just get madly shuffled around and doubled like crazy, and math would be hard. The name even implies it wants to be an instant-speed combat trick, but that would make it even more painfully complex, so I don’t know what direction this card is pulling in.

Derivative Subversion by @reaperfromtheabyss
...How is this not a card again? Copying and countering spells are costed pretty much the same, and making it modal just makes sense. The entwine is a nice touch. I will say that, even though we can copy permanent spells now, not every copy spell has to be able to do that, and this card feels like it should just copy instants/sorceries. It would ruin the symmetry with the counter half, but still. Also, I’m not sure what the name is getting at? Like, those are just fancy words for “copy” and “interfere with”, so I get how they match up to the modes, but I don’t get what it means in-world. Flavor text? AD? Something to give more context, even if it’s “snarky blue mage quote”.

The Halls of Maurer Estate by @wolkemesser
So this card is cool, but... it’s red. Red red red, all the way. Attack trigger? Red. Temporary tokens? Red. I’m not feeling the esper here at all, except maybe from the name and art. Speaking of which- the “haunted mirror” thing is cool as hell, and I wish the card leaned into that more mechanically, because wow, that’s such a neat idea for a card. I do wonder though, was this card intended to copy *every* attacking creature? As is, you not only double your own board when you attack, but (apart from corner cases) you get a 1:1 copy to block every single creature coming at you. That makes this a HUGE value card for ETB/value decks, while also being a nigh-impassable pillowfort, unless the opponent has huge tramplers or straight unblockable stuff. I do like where you were going with this card, but the concept needed some adjustments.

Chiwit, the Living Leyline by @i-am-the-one-who-wololoes
I’ll admit, this is definitely a different direction from most of the cards this week, and I like where it starts. Rewarding you for manipulating your mana generators to individually produce multiple mana would make for a super cool deck. However, I wish it had a more exciting reward than “draw a card”. Also, this gets really fuzzy when you look at the limitations. What counts as a single source? Is Dawn’s Reflection separate from the land it enchants? What is the “source” of mana? (Hint: it’s not the obvious answer)? What’s the difference between Nyxbloom Ancient and Caged Sun? These questions all have answers, but they aren’t exactly intuitive. I understand wanting to be inclusive of ritual spells, but there’s a reason most effects are phrased with regards to “tapping permanents for mana”. This is such a cool idea, too, it just lost some stuff on the execution.
That’s that for this week! Have fun with the current contest, and I’ll see you all again soon!

Update time
I went through with burning the erdtree, after which I was taken to Farum Azula. I had been there a few times before, but just small areas where the rest was inaccessible. It’s a gorgeous place, I love the floating ruins and all the tornadoes.
...Realized at some point that I had missed a whole area of Altus so I went back and did some dungeons and got the black knife (.......which requires more faith than I have) and even found a statue of Miquella and Malenia like the ones in the Haligtree.
Then I continued, fought the infamous godskin duo, which is a duo in the same way four kings is “four” kings.......... they kept respawning until the joint healthbar was depleted... seemed like being a bit aggressive was helpful, I mostly focused on the small one, just because the rolling attack the other one gets at half health is too annoying.
I had seen him from a distance, but I met Alexander for what would be the last time.... it was his wish, but it was still sad to see him shatter after the fight he wanted ;A;
Then there was Maliketh, who I had heard a bit about... I had fed him all the deathroot so I got the special dialogue (My friend was there to see me enter the arena but I almost instantly fell off the edge of all things, but thankfully I heard all the dialogue)
It was a really good fight once I got the feel for it! First phase was easy once I realized its best just to use a pillar to block the incantations, and swift glintstone shard actually was most useful for its quick casting time and larger range than something like reduvia blood blade.
Second phase I would die almost instantly to at first, but I got the hang of it, and something just clicked for me at one point and led me to victory. Its a ton of fun once you get down the rhythm of his attacks and know what to do (dodging into a lot of them is better). I was using swift shard again, but most of my damage actually came from parrying him with blasphemous claw (interesting that it was going to be Rykard that would fight Maliketh....) then bleeding him. Took a bit to get the hang of the parry but its not too bad to pull off. Dodge 2-3 beams then parry... His theme is gorgeous too... and the remembrance made me feel bad for him...
Next was Placidusax, which was honestly one of my favorite fights in the game, though why did they make the run kinda annoying? A lot like Midir in that he has a lot of hp and takes a while to fight, but is pretty easy to read and dodge once you get a feel for the fight. Not as hard as Midir though (though I actually don’t find Midir terrible, yeah one of the harder fights no doubt but demon prince and Gael were worse for me). Anyway, a good dragon fight, and I loved how the music would go silent for the bolt attack.
I should probably do frenzy flame now that I can clear it, I have the needle and have made it to the center of the storm... actually I’m curious if it will cure Red Eyes too, I’m not sure if the formless mother is involved there and the needle isn’t specific to frenzy flame but rather can counteract all outer gods. So if she is, maybe they’ll be gone, if not, then they won’t...? I’ll test it soon. I’m doing Fia’s ending this round so I’ll want to clear it.
Roundtable is also in flames, and Roderika sounded really worried about Hewg, and after talking to him, especially after Maliketh.... he’s losing his memory and still won’t flee... No wonder she’s so worried ;A;
And now the capital is ash... (....sorry Morgott, I burned your precious tree and now your capital is gone too) I found a disillusioned Cohryn, calling his master a madman, and Goldmask as well, now dead, but with a mending rune... And after coming back, Cohryn is dead too and I got their clothes. I know where I have to go next, probably a boss fight and I must be really close to the end, but I’m dragging it out because I don’t want it to end (even though I have over 250h and its still my first playthrough, I uh... am very thorough... )

Back from the real world!
And I got some venting to do!
SO. I didn’t have Internet except at work (where I’m not supposed to be on it when not on break, a rule I broke a lot and feel only slightly bad about) for about 3 weeks. And this happened about the same time as the death of Kazuki Takahashi. Who created my favorite manga, and the first anime/show I loved as a child that wasn’t something my parents picked out for me.
I know my blog is a heady mix of politics and fanart and real art and a bunch of things now. But when I started out, and I was afraid to post anything political, I was following mostly Yu-Gi-Oh! fanblogs. (And Communismkills. Love her.) I’ve posted a lot less about YGO over time. This is partly because of the Obsession Cycle (see below) and partly because I am influenced by the content that people I like post. Hence why I got more political from following CK, more artistic from following art blogs, etc.
The Obsession Cycle is a cycle of hyperfixations on certain stories that I love more than any others. Although new stories are often added to the cycle, making it longer or shorter, it always includes Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Gravity Falls, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Hey Arnold!, Disney in some form, and Ghibli in some form. The cycle is complete either when I drop all hyperfixations for a period of time, or when I return to the fixation I started with in the most recent iteration. My sister, explaining this concept to her husband, pointed out that I used to cycle through this entirely within 8 months. Then, adding new media in and having more to do in college and law school, the cycle widened dramatically to 3 years. Right now, she estimates that my cycle is about 2 years long. The implication of course is that there has been a regression.
I would agree with that. To be completely honest, I was about to reread the manga when I heard Takahashi had died, and that news hit me very hard. While I am not interested in large swathes of the franchise that Yu-Gi-Oh! spawned, and therefore do not see Takahashi as an ideal, I have always respected and admired his work. It is also easy to sympathize with him losing some creative control over time due to the insane popularity of Duel Monsters, but he found a way to end his story satisfactorily (twice, if we include the Dark Side of Dimensions movie) despite one game taking massive precedence.
So without Internet, having just moved into a new apartment, with a lot of frustration at work, and feeling very isolated and upset, I restarted my cycle and started shoving Yu-Gi-Oh! into my brain as fast and as hard as possible. I have been very very annoying to talk to lately, even to myself. My sister has been delicately asking me “when I’m going to be done” with this phase for at least a week. I don’t really see an end in sight, and I can never predict when the feverish fascination will fade.
Honestly, this is a period of mourning. Even though the story concluded long ago, Yu-Gi-Oh! has always had a special place in my heart. It helped me make friends (through playing the card game w/boys at school) and learn new ways to express myself artistically. (Yes, I wrote fic, no, you can’t read it.) It was something I enjoyed that no one else in my family liked.
It was also my safe place. I was nine when I got into the show. You know what else happened when I was nine? I started puberty ahead of everyone else in my class and I was subsequently molested. I took real comfort and strength from how characters stood up for themselves and made themselves comfortable in their own bodies (or others’ bodies, as the case may be). I liked that they could make stupid mistakes but still have their friends’ support.
I only ever got to see the first two seasons because for some reason the TV station would never air anything past the first half of the Battle City finals. I also owned the first volume of the manga, which is extremely different from the dub I knew and hinted at a wealth of interpretation and content that was beyond my reach. Then my card-playing friend moved away and my mom died. Real life stuff like that got in the way of my exploring the story further until I was in high school and found the abridged series.
I never let myself finish the manga before, because I didn’t have all the volumes. Now I’m waiting on the last one to come in the mail. Because I always expect the cycle to come back again, I try never to fully exhaust any of these media properties. If it appears I will run out of the finite content for any of them, I try to start distracting myself with lesser media, chores, anything else to draw it out. I have to assume other people do this but I’ve never met anyone IRL who does (that would admit it anyway).
Despite all of this, I’m still an adult with a job. I’m trying to manage and balance my hyperfixation with all the other things I need to do. Like if I can’t have any free time, I’ll play instrumental music from the show as I work. I guess I expected to outgrow the Obsession Cycle without having to expend noticeable effort in doing so. Like my dad has told me many times, “it’s a phase.” Sometimes you don’t return to things you used to like, sure. But I resent them applying that label to Yu-Gi-Oh!. It’s really not a phase. It was a part of my childhood (then rapidly vanishing) that helped me learn the person I wanted to be as an adult. It still inspires me so much.
And aside from all that, I think having that break from regular Internet time helped me refine what I want out of that time now that I have it back. I enjoyed how much reading and organizing I was able to get done. I felt less distracted, even as I chafed at my difficulties in listening to music or communicating with friends. I may post less for awhile, maybe permanently. I don’t think I’ll ever really leave Tumblr or the Internet. And I didn’t enjoy being forcibly without it. But I feel like my relationship with the Internet will be healthier going forward.
