Here's what you can get in Collinwood, TN for $240K. It's dark, but maybe it can be brightened somehow, and it's dated, built in 1973, but it has some fascinating features. It's a large home with 5bds, 4ba. Let's take a look inside.

The living room has a stone fireplace wall and a nice staircase with shelving, plus high ceilings and wood paneled walls. There are also big windows. Maybe get rid of the dark brown curtains.

Eat-in kitchen. Maybe sheers on the sliding doors instead of heavy drapes. Also, move the table over under the chandelier so people can go outside.

Wow, the kitchen has some original appliances, like the ovens. There's a vintage trash compactor, too.

This looks like a nice family room and it's light.

Here's a guest powder room. It has the classic 70s shell sink. I think that if the light bulb were changed out to incandescent, it might improve the situation.

I don't believe this. They took up this whole beautiful room with a trampoline. It has a beamed vaulted ceiling and wood paneling. I notice little fans all over the place, but the description says it has a/c.

News from the Reddit trenches

absolutely upsetting to see /r/egg_irl (former queer-meme sub for people questioning their gender) on fire like that. TL;DR: Seems like the majority of eggs on that sub were unwilling to support the protest for more than a couple of days or move to other websites until the situation improves. Still protesting mods are under fire from the public. Mods currently have the subreddit open, but marked as NSFW and the rules were changed to allow for real-life (chicken) eggs only.

Yesterday, the mods made a pinned post (currently at negative karma 14% upvote ratio) announcing a vote that is being held (already was held? idk) The vote did not have the option to stop the protest. People Are shitting on the mods for taking over the sub.

I have not personally heard of anyone getting banned for violating the protest-rule. People do confess in their posts and comments to breaking the rule on purpose. Most of the complaints site "Missing their home/safe space" as the reason for wishing the protest to stop. Around 3.3% (10k to 300k) of users seems to have migrated to /r/Eggy_memes as of form of counterprotest.

As someone who is not going back to using reddit for the forseeable future, i dont have an opinion on the matter other than it just sucks from every concieveable angle.

my current wip list

Hands Made for Gentleness is about my two dear idiots Vaniah and Anneka, who get married to dodge an arranged-marriage law. Vaniah is incredibly traumatised by events in his past. Anneka discovers this as time goes by. It's a story of healing, mainly, and mental health. Boatload of trigger warnings (Vaniah is severely depressed, suicidal and all that goes with that, while Anneka is in recovery from anorexia) but I love them so much and I love the energy that's between them. At this moment I'm writing a scene in which they're arguing because Vaniah abruptly shut down a kissing scene without explanation and the conversation afterwards got mildly heated. Also they basically end up in a QPR more than a traditional romantic relationship and I love that for them. They're late twenties or so during this novel. First draft.

Patience, Changing is about Patience and her adopted sister Rhona. Patience is my autistic darling, Rhona is my current Discord pfp and anyway I love them. They have interpersonal conflicts that form the nucleus of the novel, but they work them out in the end. Teenagers, and absolutely no romantic relationships in this story which I love. Also it's set in my home city of Melbourne. First draft.

To Kindle a Flame is the first book of an embarrassingly big series. I first wrote the earliest draft for camp nanowrimo or nanowrimo itself, 2017. It started out as one book, in fact started out as a simple response to a concept outlined and failed to bring to a satisfying conclusion by a Christian book by someone in my denomination - In Search of Life by Anna Tikvah. I loved the concept (girl has questions about life, turns to the Bible and reads it, things happen), but then Verity never questioned that the Bible was true, which seemed wack to me. So I started writing a story in which my main character (Adira) found a copy of the Bible and then began to read it, but the whole time she's questioning it. It turned into about 300k of messy drafting (I've drafted it uhh three times by now and am gradually working on overhauling it, grabbing what bits I can and then finishing the draft, ideally this year) and has become a story about mental health, choices and the way people figure out beliefs. In the Gospels there's a line in which Pilate says "What is truth?" - that's basically the tagline of To Kindle a Flame. It's also dystopian. It's my beloved baby. Anyway I'm normal about this story. Also Adira is autistic. Oops. I didn't intend that. I just looked at her character one day and went Yet Another Autistic Character Ay. xD It's also set in Melbourne, but aforementioned dystopia renders Melbourne unrecognisable. I've done a bunch of worldbuilding on her. Also features the character who was the first openly queer character I ever wrote - Tom, who's bi, though he ends up married to Adira and never has a mlm relationship during the story (has prior - in the story he's side B). Somewhere between first and second drafts.

Do Roses Cast Shadows? was the most recent nanowrimo, and I got a grand total of 12k into it. I uh. Don't know what's going on really. I don't recall much, but I'd like to get back to it someday. My characters are Wren and I can't recall the male main character's name.

They Told Me To Name My Demons is a poetry collection I'm working up to publication someday. It's about Christianity, suicidality, depression, autism and identity. I plan to include 100 poems and 7 prose pieces, of which I've so far written and somewhat edited 84 poems (might have a few more, I haven't crossreferenced with my phone lately) and 4 pieces of prose. The title is from a blog post I read years ago and then wrote a poem in response to. Most of the poems have been written in the last year or two. I chase inspiration where I see it. First draft.

Sparks Under Heaven is a collection of five short stories/novellas, all connected to To Kindle a Flame (one features Adira, two her grandfather, one someone another character knew in his youth and the other focuses on an event from To Kindle a Flame but from someone else's perspective). I've had it professionally edited but the edits are sitting there still waiting to be touched, largely. Second-last round of edits before I self publish.

Through Lightning, Through Thunder was nanowrimo 2022, the happiest novel I've ever written and absolutely beloved. It features Taira (rabbit), Paddy (fox), Sheba (lynx), and various less important characters. It started out life as a Narnia fanfic, focused around my original characters with occasional mentions of the Four. It was 15k. Then I fleshed it out into a full original novel, 100k-and-counting. Oopsie. The good guys are trying to stop an evil dragon being resurrected (based on the Witch scene in Prince Caspian). In the end everyone lives happily ever after. Yay. Second draft.

[Inklings story] is about Hadassah, autistic darling of my heart who is thrown through a portal and discovers a found family on the other side, essentially. Downtrodden autistic but becomes happy and confident. First draft.

The Time Travelling Midwife is about Felicity, ALSO autistic (surprise!). I haven't got very far with this one either, it exists mostly in vibes in my mind. It's best summarised as the story with the time travelling midwife, who travels in time, is an angel, tries to stop evil from prevailing and when it does eventually through the building of the tower of Babel (mainly facilitated by one of her colleagues), her time travelling powers are taken away and she ends up settling somewhere in the 1900s and having a happy life. First draft.

HIIII OH MY GOD OK UMMMM

eoos is like. my favourite fic of all time EVER. it’s got over 300k words and 28 chapters so explaining what’s going on is like. impossible (believe me, i tried summarizing it chapter by chapter bc i wanted shay to read it so badly but they don’t read long fics and i just. gave up after chapter 2 lmao) BUT BASICALLY it’s a genshin impact fic where ajax gets transported into the genshin world and is like assigned to be character tartaglia. tartaglia is a villain in the second chapter of genshin but things go a little differently in the fic version. aka he dies in this version. anyways!!

so basically ajax looks at the fate he’s been given and decides “uhh no thanks fuck that i’m gonna romance zhongli instead” because he spent all his time and money in the real world being a massive zhongli simp and honestly i cannot blame him.

since ajax is now a character in a video game he gets assigned like. a helper?? that basically acts as a system that keeps record of all of his achievements, relationships with other people, goals and main missions (very important!! if he does not complete them on time he will DIE for real) inventory and other stuff like that. he nicknames his system AR (but we LATER find out that AR is actually the spirit of the original tartaglia (who was killed when ajax entered the world and took over his body) but he didn’t know that for the longest time so basically he’s just babysitting this gay trainwreck (ajax) that now pilots his body. their dynamic is fun i love it)

ANYWAYS. anyways for the longest time this fic was about ajax fucking around and being a massive dork who’s hopelessly in love with zhongli, and how their relationship evolves over time. since ajax arrived like 2 and half years before the main missions were to take place he had lots of time to spend taking zhongli on dates and sightseeing with him and making meals for him and serenading him every night before bed, they’re so adorable. and zhongli is very much in love with him too!! this fic is great because the chapters alternate between being written from ajax’s perspective and other character’s perspectives (like zhongli) so we get to see how they feel about each other and. ugh it’s so cute. it’s so cute how zhongli basically immediately took a liking to ajax and was like ‘this one. this one is special to me. he is my little priest and i shall cherish him’ (because he’s a dragon and also a god and childe is like. his biggest fan basically. so he’s zhongli’s priest. it’s cute).

they go on lots of cute dates and they flirt with each other all the time and ajax is such a gay loser he doesn’t even realize he’s in love with zhongli and zhongli is head over heels for him until like. he basically proposed to zhongli. meanwhile zhongli is over here being like ‘ah yes. childe. my boyfriend of over a year. the one i share my home with and spend 90% of my time with. the most important person in my life. and soon to be my husband <3’. they are engaged like ajax definitely proposed to him and he didn’t even realize but they’re totally engaged

AND THATS LIKE THE FIRST 75% OF THE FIC UNTIL EVERYTHING GOES DOWNHILL BECAUSE REMEMBER THE MAIN MISSIONS AND SHIT?? AND HOW TARTAGLIA WAS ORIGINALLY A VILLAIN IN THE GAME?? yeah well SOME PEOPLE still want him to experience the same fate he did in the original game and they’re doing everything in their power to make sure that happens to him. so just when you think ajax and zhongli can finally retire and live happily ever after BAM childe’s under arrest for terrorism and attempted murder and BAM suddenly there’s courtroom drama and OH SHIT zhongli’s gonna reveal he’s a god to everyone to defend ajax’s honour but he CAN’T do that because that goes against one of ajax’s main missions so if zhongli reveals that ajax will DIE and there’s a counter counting down to his death basically so he has to do something to stop it and he’s already dealing with intrusive thoughts from genshin’s version of hell and the only thing he can think of is to STAB ZHONGLI TO MAKE HIM STOP. and it works of course but the ajax gets knocked out and he’s all alone again because AR got suspended during all of this and all of his friends know that he almost destroyed liyue harbour (because he had to. it was part of his main mission) and he doesn’t know if zhongli’s gonna be ok and HU TAO (OH MY GOD I DIDNT EVEN MENTION HU TAO. BEST AUNTIE AND ALSO THE ONLY OTHER PERSON WHO GOT ISEKAI’D INTO GENSHIN LIKE AJAX DID. SHES REALLY IMPORTANT HOW DID I NOT MENTION HER) comes along and is like “ok boyo it’s time to fake your death!!” so NOW zhongli and everyone else thinks childe is dead. and that’s where we left off.

so the next chapter is gonna retell those events from zhongli’s point of view and i am not ready to read about how ridiculously in love he is with ajax at the beginning only to be stabbed by him and have no idea what’s going on and then think he’s dead. my heart burst into a million pieces just reading the last chapter and thinking about how he was going to react and now i get to read it and-

heyooo I just started writing fan fic and I really have no idea what I'm doing haha, can you explain how you draft and edit and write you long fics? i don't know what to do besides just starting at the beginning and writing to the end. (also sending this to multiple writiers so I can get lots of opinions)

An amorphous list of advice from someone who has written over 300k words in under a year:

Make sure to note all your ideas for the fic down. You will not remember your plot twist thought up on the walk home in a few hours - *write it down!* It could be gushing to a friend about it or a notepad or whatever - and then make sure to compile it wherever you’re keeping your ideas for that fic. 

Be kind to yourself! Sometimes it takes weeks or months to write a scene the way you want it - maybe you aren’t inspired, maybe you can’t get it to Work, maybe, maybe - don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s art. There is no timeline. 

Likewise, if you’re new: I’d really recommend against a longfic! Do some oneshots first - seeing a work to completion and posting it will really help your confidence. A longfic is a long commitment, and if you end up changing plans or abandoning it it can be very discouraging for you to have that incomplete work be one of your first. It’s like training for a marathon :D

Get a bullet point list if you can of scenes you want to do or information/things that need to happen for those scenes to make sense. Even if you don’t have the details - I have the note ‘they find Tary in hell, because he overheard them and thought it was an adventurous place to be’ in my main fic doc. I didn’t know *how* they were going to meet him, or under what context, and figured that out as I wrote. You don’t need to break it up by chapter, just timeline. 

Speaking of timeline, here’s a neat trick: muse is a fickle thing, you don’t *have* to trudge through content you don’t want to write to get to the good stuff. I usually prefer to - I like having the full emotional context for scenes clear in my head - but when writer’s block gets me I’ll often jump to self indulgent writing something fun I’ve wanted to get to. You can always go back and edit things and add in a scene later, so long as you haven’t posted yet…

… which is why I strongly, strongly, strongly recommend having a buffer when you can, or at least letting a chapter sit overnight while you sleep on it. I get the urge to post something you just made, hot off the press, but you would not believe the number of typos or inconsistencies I find after reading things over with fresh eyes. This is true for both oneshots and longfics - the chapters y’all are seeing for Two for joy were mostly complete around November during NaNoWriMo! It also means you have room to go back and edit things - if you stumble on a cool plot twist you can foreshadow it more effectively, or if a character arc changed in ways you didn’t expect you can lay more groundwork for it. It’s less stressful knowing that if gradschool goes to hell I’ve got… hang on… 13 weeks of wiggle room while still keeping to my schedule. And even if it did run out - this is free content, people would understand if I went on hiatus for a bit. You have all the time in the world - use it!

BUT, in a similar vein, feedback and encouragement are super important to keeping your muse up. Which is why I strongly recommend having a friend or two in fandom you can bombard with snippets and spoilers and ideas! One for sorrow / Two for joy would likely have sputtered and fizzled out without @rightpastnowhere, @katia-dreamer, @burr-ell, @essayofthoughts, @romeoandjulietyouwish - and the fandom community I found early on that were so excited for the fic! Engage with your commenters, they can make for really great friends, betas and/or tormented souls when you offhand chuck your most evil plot twists at them >:D 

Remember that fanfic is supposed to be fun. You’re having fun. You’re writing, for free. I’ve mostly written for Critical Role as a fandom, but I promise you it’s not as scary as you might think it is. I haven’t gotten a single nasty comment or anon yet, despite, uhhhh, breaking up my OTP and piling angst galore on people (and making Vax trans). By in large, it's a supportive space - but don't be afraid to curate it to your needs. Writing is for you and whatever you want to get out of it: validation for your ideas/HCs/skill, new friendships and a sense of community, improving your own skill, self-indulgent things you want to see in fiction, working through trauma, hella hot porn, etc. We’re all allowed to look to fic for different things, If it stops being what you need, if it feels like work, like a chore? You can drop it.

Shakira, a Strawberry Jam Jar, and the Cheating Rumor Captivating the Internet

Twitter is obsessed with the idea that Shakira caught ex-husband Gerard Piqué cheating because...she found her jam eaten, and Gerard never eats jam.

Shakira’s ex-husband appears to have found himself in a bit of a...jam. 

The singer has been no stranger to controversy as of late, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from globbing onto an unsubstantiated theory about how the singer may have caught her ex, soccer player Gerard Piqué, cheating on her. The plot of said theory can be summarized as follows: Who stole the jam from Shakira’s jam jar?

After a 12-year romance, Shakira, 45, and Piqué, 35, ended their relationship last year after Piqué allegedly left his wife for 23-year-old Clara Chia Marti. Though Piqué’s relationship with Marti had long been reported as an affair, Shakira was apparently “devastated” when sleuths uncovered footage of Marti in the back of a Zoom interview Piqué had given from their shared home in 2021. The two were reportedly still together at the time.

Fast forward to the juicy stuff: the strawberry jam. In August of last year, Shakira put out a single with Rauw Alejandro called “TeFelicito.” One particular scene in the music video for the single shows Shakira peering into a fridge, and when asked about the scene in interviews (according to a very murky string of sources, I must add), Shakira reportedly said she was hoping to “find the truth.” In the fridge!

The story gets increasingly blurry from here, but accordingto ShowNews.today, a Spanish TV program called Socialite declared that Shakira caught her husband cheating after discovering a partially eaten jar of jam. She had been out of town promoting her music…but Shakira is supposedly the only one in her household who eats strawberry jam! Gerard hates jam! So who could’ve eaten the jam other than…his mistress?!

As always, the internet loves a cheating scandal, regardless of the accuracy of the jam tale. Shakira shall go forth and be known as the keeper of the jam and the seeker of re-jam-ption. Because what could be more painful than a vision of some bitch eating Shakira’s special strawberry jam in Shakira’s house? The roof that Shakira raised her children under?! Shakira may have put a voo-doo doll in front of her mother-in-law’s house, and she may be accused of tax evasion, but God willing, the internet be damned if another woman sticks her claws in Shakira’s jam jar ever again.

Apparently the semi-famous former tenants of the Hype House, including Lil Huddywho is now just going by Huddy because maturity, caused more than $300K in property damage. Now, their landlord is suing. That’s so not hype!! [TMZ]

I finally figured out why I didn't understand shipping Dream and Lucienne despite it making so much sense. And then I figured out that I actually like the idea under certain conditions.

Dream/Lucienne as short one-shot established relationship material: nah

Dream/Lucienne as a 500k incredibly slowburn during which he continues on making the progress he already has taken the first, hesitant steps towards and becomes more comfortable treating Lucienne as, if not a complete equal in running the Dreaming (because the Dreaming is him and he's connected to it in a way that is unique to him), then a close second, while learning to accept the advice, opinions, and support of other people around him, with a short aside wherein he figures out how romantic attraction works when his younger sibling isn't being a little shit, and all that before he finally considers asking Lucienne out because even he realizes that if he fucks this up by taking it too quickly there's more at stake than just his love life: HELL YEAH

And I'm not used to shipping things that require that much building up to! But it could be such an incredible love story if Dream puts in the work, especially if he grows to the point where their working relationship won't be harmed if either of them decide to end the relationship!

Bonus if it leads to "Hi, I'm Hob, and this is my husband Dream, his wife Lucienne, and her (girlfriend or wife) Gault". Why do I see potential between Gault and Lucienne? I dunno, the idea occured to me the first time I saw Lucienne compliment how good she looks with her fairy wings and I can't quite seem to put it down despite having very little evidence to support it.

CONTINUING ON MY DREAM IS THE DREAMING ELDRITCH CREACHER BS what drives me absolutely INSANE about morphienne is that Lucienne is so loyal, so devoted, that she stayed to guard and tend what pieces of the Dreaming she could while Morpheus was imprisoned. What pieces of HIM she could while Morpheus was imprisoned!!! God I don’t even know if he puts it together but I think she’s the first person to see him so vulnerable THAT HE ALLOWS TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP in a long, long time. Even when he, Dream, Morpheus, the BodyTM, gets back to Dream, the Dreaming, the RealmTM, and he needs help standing up? When he fails to fix the throne room? He allows that care.

This 1924 uh, er...roof is a bargain for $240K. It's located in Garden City, KS and has 2bds, 2ba.

Not bad, right? The entrance actually reminds me of an earth ship home. This is a nice, sunny, plant room with a built-in seat.

It must've been remodeled b/c it's giving mid-century modern vibes. The living room is spacious, has a great fireplace and a built-in desk with a storage armoire and wood plank beamed ceiling. I like the tile floor and the lighting, too.

Needs a good cleaning, some decor, and it will be a beautiful room.

This is unique- doors open to reveal a terrace to the plant room.

There are so many interesting features to this home, like a large walk-in closet.

There are also open levels. Lots of them.

More stairs. Could this be a bedroom? There's a full bath and a curtain for privacy.

The bath was definitely remodeled in mid-century. Look at the sinks.

Lots of shelving in the hallway. At least I think it's a hallway.

Look at the bathroom sink in there- it's in a recessed box-like structure with a light.

This is the dining area with an overhead chandelier and built-in cabinets.

And, down here is the laundry room.

I like this house, but right now I'm lost. I think it's the stupid photos they took.

At last, I think I found a bedroom.

We're back in the plant room. If you look up, you can see one room above and another room below.

The back of the property has a large cement area and fence.

Inside the fence is a huge dirt yard and a cement patio.

There's a shed, too. It really needs some landscaping and looks like there's plenty of room for a garden. It's an 8,681 sq. ft. lot.

With nearly 300k words, it’s only likely nearly every prompt will make an appearance in untitled. and honestly i should just copy chapter 35 for this but instead i tried out a new coloring style. that works, right?

The blond watched his kwami a moment before looking in the general direction of the bridge, watching the older boy fiddle with a camera, “I can’t just tell you, you’ve gotta figure it out yourself,” his vague answer irritated the blond, who sighed, returning his gaze to him, “I can lead you to water, but fuck I can’t make you drink, kid,”

He exhaled in an attempt to level himself, sick of his riddles, “Okay, so, I’m going to go talk to Luka, who doesn’t talk in vague proverbs--”

“But he does make you happy, huh? A lil joy to break through your numb facade?”

“Hey--” Luka started softly, his hands never leaving his body, his left brushing his hair off his face and other on his shoulder, “You’re an amazing person, Adrien. You are so sweet and thoughtful, and your kindness would be alarming if it wasn’t so damn consistent,” he felt himself smile at his words, more the phrasing than the content itself, but enough that the other smiled back, “I want you to know how phenomenal you are. I’m sorry for who doesn’t see it, it’s their loss, really. But there’s definitely a part of me that likes how I get the best of you.”

Adrien watched him lean closer, his blue eyes soft as he watched him. He couldn’t figure out what he was thinking, his fingers tracing the nape of his neck felt like so much more than it was, causing his heart to flutter. But no-- this wasn’t right. There was something mesmerizing about the older boy that made this moment freeze in time, something different.

Luka smiled, reaching up to ruffle his hair, breaking his trance, “I’m rarely okay, and reaching out is hard, so if you ever want to talk I’m here for ya, blondie,” he smiled back, wrapping his arms around his neck as Luka’s made their way to his waist, lifting him slightly, invoking laughter from the both of them, “Can I adopt you and free you from your shitty home life? There’s plenty of room on the Liberty for you.”

“I just really-- there’s nothing he could say that would tear me from you, y’know?”

Luka exhaled a laugh, shaking his head, “Of course, blondie.”

“Super need to go though--”

He nodded, gesturing him away, “Yeah, go, go--”

Smiling, he started walking backwards, “I’ll see you later?” Luka waved as he pulled his hood backup, waving once before turning to walk straight. About a block in he felt his kwami settle into his spot, his tail flicking his cheek. Adrien wasn’t too surprised when the other didn’t say anything, but he did get what he was trying to tell him earlier. Luka did make him really, stupid happy. And safe enough to open up, although still a struggle, but comforted when he finally did. Nearly everything he did with the other made him want to do more; he would’ve just sat there in silence with him until the sun set, easily.

Plagg eventually sighed, “You feeling better, kid?”

Adrien laughed, “You might be onto something.” He heard his kwami groan, prompting him to laugh again. He could acknowledge it at least, no harm would come from that, right? To just admit it to himself-- that hardly meant anything. Even though he didn’t go out looking for him, he couldn’t express how thankful he was to stumble into him. He knew, despite how terrible his father would get, he’d at least have Luka right there with him.

Any time no new houses under $300k show up in the specific towns I'm considering moving to for a couple days I get extremely anxious and start redrawing my life plan since I will never own a home

The Fed increased the interest rate by 0.75%, a major jump, so we're at about 3-3.25% in total. The Fed has also been hinting they'll keep rising it incrementally until about 4.6%. This is all to combat inflation. Stocks immediately tumbled.

After suffering from recent losses, Russia is now declaring a partial military mobilization. This is different from a general draft and instead about 300K reservists under the age of 35 will have to report for duty. Since the war began, Putin has tried to keep a sense of normalcy at home to prevent dissatisfaction and criticism about the war, so this move really changes all of that. Immediately over 1300 people were arrested at protests and there were sold-out flights as people were fleeing the country.

It's the UN General Assembly right now, and in his speech Biden criticized Russia, called for some UN reforms, reaffirmed the two-state solution, and said Iran shouldn't get nuclear weapons.

An appeals court reversed a ruling about Trump's documents. Previously the DOJ was blocked from examining many documents seized from Mars-a-Lago any further. I'm not entirely certain how this affects the special master situation, whether Judge Dearie isn't necessary at all at this point or whether he's still on board for some of the documents. I'm still reading into it.

NY Attorney General James is suing Trump; his children Ivanka, Donald Jr., and Eric; and their company for business fraud. James is alleging Trump falsified his net worth to minimize taxes and get better loans and insurance deals. She does not have the power to bring criminal charges, so that's why this is a civil case. She wants $250M, permanently ban the Trump from serving as an officer in a company in NYS, permanently ban the companies from working in NYS, and prevent the Trumps from buying real estate for five years. This case may be hard to prove because much of Trump’s worth is tied to real estate, the value of which is somewhat volatile and subjective.

The House passed a bill overhauling the electoral count. This new bill would require a third of the House to sign an objection to certifying state electors instead of what is now one representative and one senator. To my knowledge no one has ever thought to object until 2020, which is why no one messed with this law until now. It also requires governors to use the electors that follow the popular vote, i.e. if the populace chooses candidate A, the governor can't send electors for candidate B. In the House it was passed mostly along party lines, but there are Republican supporters in the Senate so there's a good chance this will head to Biden. About 92% of Trump's candidates won in the primaries this year, so many Republicans aren't willing to do anything to offend him.

Read Along: For Women Only: The Loneliest Burden

If somehow you see this, I'm not a serious blogger. Just someone sitting here reading my old marriage books to see how they sound after almost 20 years of happy marriage mostly due to not following the advice in these books. I'm starting with For Women Only because it has a cute modern cover and claims to be scientific. Now I'm in Chapter 4: The Loneliest Burden: How His Need to Provide Weighs Your Man Down, and Why He Likes It That Way.

This chapter is a bit concerning on the onset with it's theme that men feel a need to be the sole provider that must be met by their wife, because since this book was originally published in 2004 the cost of living has gone up astronomically.

I just checked on Zillow for 3 bedroom, 2 bath homes in my city (a very average mid-size city in the south), the lowest price appearing is $176,000 and looks like it would cost much more to actually live in, the first ones that the photo looks okay are in the 250ks and there really isn't much of anything until you get to the 300ks. Let's go with 300K as an average though I'm wondering if that's even easy to find in the current market.

According to a mortgage calculator with a 20% downpayment ($60,000) that's over $2,000/month in a mortgage payment. Most budget advice says that your mortgage needs to be under 28% of your overall income so that would mean that you would need to make at least $7,142.86/month. That's a salary of $85,000 a year. Honestly, with the increasing cost of food, gas, and everything else it's questionable on whether that percentage is actually feasible. The average salary in my state is around half of that. That means a lot of families are going to need two incomes. Also, with rising rent prices, they likely will need even more income to be able to save for that downpayment and the necessary additional savings to ensure that they can handle repairs and other emergencies with that mortgage payment.

Honestly, this is a terrible burden to put on men. They should not feel solely responsible to provide for their families. We should be reassuring men that this is not their sole responsibility and that it's okay if they are not able to make enough income to support a family alone. Men should be reassured that income level does not directly correlate to hard work, intelligence, or reliability. If someone is married to a person that has the gifting or opportunities to make more than them it should be celebrated not seen as an issue whether it's the man or woman.

Also, this type of thinking is going to make it really hard for men to work in service related fields especially being pastors because we know those jobs don't typically pay well. Even if the church cares, the budget is often being created by an older generation that's out of touch with current market costs of living, the salary typically doesn't include any health insurance or retirement benefits, and the church may be really stretching to even offer even a modest salary.

Okay, with basic math out of the way, I'll start with chapter 4, in a new post! P.S. I don't personally like Dave Ramsey but since he's the king of evangelical financial advice, I plugged $85,000 into his calculator which is based on a 25% model with a 15-year-mortgage, and he says that only covers a $200K house.
