I really don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read yet, but I absolutely have to yell about Queen of Attolia, so just scroll on by if you don't want hints and potential context-less spoilers.

This book spoke to me and also put me in the ground. I had a lot of complex emotions while reading, and I'm pretty sure half the reason I finished so quickly (less than 24 hours!) was because I was speed-running it because I was stressed about Eugenides' wellbeing, having been in some of the same places emotionally.
Then we also have:
Tumblr media
She is SO IMPORTANT TO ME i would die for her
On that note:
Tumblr media
There's so many good moments, just f'n classic and I'm so normal about it I swear
Speaking of, there was this one:

And of course:

I had to scream in a pillow. My husband thinks I'm insane. I probably am.
How tf do you go from making me hate someone with every fiber of my being to cheering them on and wanting them to be with the person I wanted them dead for? It's so confusing and so good, and I'm ready to bow down and admit I will never be able write anything as glorious as that arc, because I still don't know how she did it. All hail her majesty MWT, I AM NOT WORTHY

Hi, who would you fancast as Gen, Irene, Sophos and Helen? Also, what would you do if ROTT ever gets a movie adaptation, one depicting the war with the Mede anyway? 🙈 🥺👉👈
Hii!!!! Oh my gosh fancasting Tqt is NOT easy...
...especially since a couple fancasts have already been made that I am SO down to agree with. I hope you'll forgive me if I partly choose people that have already been named within the fandom before...?
[Insert: ARE YOU KIDDING ME YOU MADE ME CREATE WHOLE POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS FOR THEM I SPENT THE ENTIRE AFTERNOON ON THIS AND I DO NOT REGRET IT]
Eugenides: Luke Pasqualino
Who else. He could pull off Young Gen, King Gen, and God Gen. I love his chill mannerisms and his cheekiness. But whoever has watched BBC's "The Musketeers" knows he can portray a dark, rash and dangerous side as well. The actor has Italian roots btw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Irene Attolia: Irene Papas
Sadly, this awesome actress died in 2022. She was Greek and played in "The Trojan Women" as well as "Iphigenia" - so, you know, she has the ideal Greek Aristocratic face. Isn't she the perfect Attolia?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sophos - Christian Martyn
How I found this actor, I don't know. I am not familiar with him, though he played Gilbert Blythe in "Anne with an E". Look. LOOK. Bear with me. He seems innocent, is the definition of too Nice™ and has this precious aura of childlike chaos about him. But he is also able to glow up into a warrior when necessary O_O
Tumblr media
Helen Eddis: Nathalie Emmanuel
Okay, look. While I'm personally highly satisfied with the above casts, I know full and well that this one isn't perfect. First of all, Emmanuel is far too thin and pretty to be Eddis. They'd have to change her nose at least, if not give her a rounder body type. But she is dark-skinned, her hair is short, her smile is fun and captivating, and I think this does reflect who Eddis is to some degree. I'm sorry I didn't find anything more accurate.
Tumblr media
To comfort you, here are some more random character casts that I found/came up with while working on the others:
King of Sounis - Jack Black
Nahuseresh - Dev Patel. Imagine the reddish beard oh my gosh
Kamet - Riz Ahmed (that one was the author's choice, I believe)
Ambiades - Austin North. Like, come on. He's gotta be the evil version of Sophos and he would be perfect.
Costis - he's honestly just that one real life Kristoff edit from Frozen. No, he's really Channing Tatum in "The Eagle". Look him up.
As for what would happen if The Queen's Thief Series got turned into a movie, I would SCREAM YELL CRY HAPPY TEARS.
They could turn the 6 books into 3 movies, I believe.
The Thief & The Queen of Attolia (the story would have to be slightly changed, e.g. older Gen and different politics, but they can really pull together the whole 125 pages of travelling to the temple into a 5min montage)
The King of Attolia & A Conspiracy of Kings (how Costis became King isn't as important, but it could serve as a sideplot/what Gen is actually contributing politically behind the facade)
Thick as Thieves and Return of the Thief (again, how Kamet came to Attolia isn't as important as the message he brought.)
The Queen's Thief reminds me much of Narnia (the world, the values, the fashion, the colors), Percy Jackson (adventure Greek setting), and Sinbad (adventure + navigating the Gods). If they ever turned that into a movie, I'D WATCH THE HECK OUT OF IT.
Thank you very much for asking!!!

The tension in ROTT between Gen and the Eddisians over who will rule/be Eddis vs. the certainty in “The End of Eddis” that Helen is Eddis, unequivocally.
Tumblr media
Even as she doubted it was still true!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She had never needed the Union King’s command to rule her Eddisians!!!

"Irene---"
"Don't call me that."
"You were the princess Irene the first time we met."
"It means 'peace,'" Attolia said. "What name could be more inappropriate?"
"That I be named Helen?" Eddis suggested.
The hard lines in Attolia's face eased, and she smiled. Eddis was a far cry from the woman whose beauty has started a war.
-The Queen of Attolia, Megan Whalen Turner
Revisiting the Iliad made me think of this exchange with the most important Helen of my heart. One thing I love about the Queen's Thief is how MWT threaded in these sparing links to existing mythology, so that even though all the pantheons and legends are made up, the story is placed in a greater context. It makes the worldbuilding feel so huge and real even while the struggles are intimate and contained.

i'm halfway through the third book of The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner and i think they're really fun, big recommend if you like plot twists and suspense and vaguely Grecian fantasy and authors who don't let the audience know nearly enough. Gen is my worstie

Oh, you married the older sister (?) of the friend/crush you connected with on a dangerous adventure as a teenager? She has some gender stuff going on and was pretty much the only person who could get through to him when he was extremely ill after one of the most traumatic experiences of his life? On a scale of Jerott Blyth to Sounis Sophos, how well did it go?

So I'm doing my first full qt reread since rott, and also my first audiobook listen, and was listening to the thief on the way home today and had Some Thoughts.
In the conversation about Gen being named after Eugenides the god, and how Gen's mother was a thief but his father wanted him to be a soldier, Sophos is surprised, either that Gen's father was a soldier or that Gen knows his father. And Gen, replies, perhaps a bit acidly, that no he's not illegitimate, and yes he even has siblings from the same father, and yes his siblings are all in respectable professions.
Which of course, given the rumours and speculation about Gen's parentage in rott raises a few questions. If we take as fact the belief that Gen rarely lies outright (but rather gives partial truths and lets people fill in the blanks in a way that suits him), what does this say about how Gen views the MoW? And vice versa? That despite rumours, despite what must've been a complex and at times painful situation, that they viewed the other as their "real" father/son? We already knew Hektor cares for Gen deeply, he funds Gen's heist in The Thief to save Gen's life (though of course we only find out the truth of this in rott), and I've always thought part of the reason he pushed Gen towards being a soldier rather than The Thief of Eddis, was to protect Gen from the isolation of the thieves, their ultimate death in falling, and from the Eddisian court which already viewed Gen with suspicion that could be life threatening as it was after Lader's death. Idk. I was struck by that convo with Sophos in a way I wasn't before.
And then further, I've noticed that in the myths told by Gen and the Magus so far, Eugenides the god is always referred to as "Earth's son", and the "woodcutter's son", despite the fact that his origin tale focuses on the woodcutter's wife's desire for a child (and presumably Eugenides the god was raised by the woodcutter and his wife, we hear of Earth visiting only in disguise to see her son). So, in a way, the god Eugenides also has three parents, just as Gen the thief does. And each Eugenides is deeply loved and wanted by his non-biological (or suspected non-biological) parent. Another similarity between Gen and his god?
I really dk where I was going with this. Just. Thinking My Silly Little Thoughts.

Sadly, Gen didn't win the Unreliable Narrator poll. In fairness, he had a steep battle against Lemony Snicket, who I imagine is more broadly familiar to readers (something something conflating quirkily convoluted storytelling with intentional unreliability something something WHATEVER). Also, it's always been Gen's strategy to never show his full hand (HA), so maybe he prefers not winning, to keep folks underestimating him.
Anyway, I was reminded I've had this piece sitting in my folder for a while, so here are two absolutely reliable narrators who are frequently rendered unreliable by their proximity to Gen. Sophos would hardcore get a tattoo after marrying Helen, and she would add one to match--it's a pinecone and an olive branch!
