Sadly, Gen didn't win the Unreliable Narrator poll. In fairness, he had a steep battle against Lemony Snicket, who I imagine is more broadly familiar to readers (something something conflating quirkily convoluted storytelling with intentional unreliability something something WHATEVER). Also, it's always been Gen's strategy to never show his full hand (HA), so maybe he prefers not winning, to keep folks underestimating him.
Anyway, I was reminded I've had this piece sitting in my folder for a while, so here are two absolutely reliable narrators who are frequently rendered unreliable by their proximity to Gen. Sophos would hardcore get a tattoo after marrying Helen, and she would add one to match--it's a pinecone and an olive branch!

In honor of the QT merch drop I want to share another patch I made because I love these books more than I can handle.
Hamiathes’s Gift the way I imagined it with the help of a geology degree and the letters on the third(?) edition of The Thief.

I've got such a soft spot for Sophos. His story is about all the trials and struggles that someone goes through when they just want to be a kid yet are destined to be King. The terrible imbalance between knowing all the courtesies of court yet having no idea on how to lead a country, or a rebellion at that. Poor Sophos has never held a proper speech before. The way that Sophos' desperate thought of "I'll just try to be like Gen" succeeds entirely by accident, and how one mistake would have been the end of him, gets me. My boy is winging it from scratch, and he has a pirate slave trader to thank for mauling his face. He's King by accidental boldness and luck and by knowing his home. He must still feel so insecure. I love how it happened for him. Destiny, leave the poor kid alone. I'm happy that he is King not primarily because of who he is, but because "being friends with Gen" is the single greatest advantage a King in his position can have. It's because of this trait that he is the only one who can save Sounis.

"My father said, 'Your uncle is dead.' The magus said, 'You are Sounis.'"
He paused in his narration, rubbing his temple. He looked tired, weary, more so than his travails accounted for, a responsibility others had killed for yet he had never wanted upon him.
Helen had been younger than him, but only by a few years. She had had, and still did, the support of all her large extended family, all her barons and nobles. Sophos - Sounis - had nearly none of that.
He spoke again, his voice an anguished whisper. "I should have stayed in Hanaktos and built walls."

"They are beautiful in the light, are they not?" They were, catching the sun and shining like tiny stars themselves. "You know, there are just as many outside the sun's rays that are invisible," she said.

Took a hot minute (switching brain meds no fun can we get an oof in the chat), but I'm BACK with the memes, this time for A Conspiracy of Kings!
Unfortunately, this is the book where my child started asking us to read sections aloud (we avoided the murdery parts), and Hakakatoes and Akrekeysmashnesh can go kick rocks
But anyway. Let me take you through a bit of my process when I started this book.
"Oh boy, my favorite side character from the first book is back! I wonder what he'll get up to!"
Trauma is what. Should have known.
Baby boy needs some therapy and a course on self esteem my gosh.
He's too cinnamon roll for this awful political hellscape he got dumped into. But when it comes down to it...
Bunny Boy came in clutch and it was glorious.
(Me too, Gen.)
As if he didn't feel guilty enough already. Give! My! Child! A! Break!
And a couple extras of two of my favorite moments between the kings.
Anyhoo, overall not my favorite book in the series so far (which pains me to say because Sophos is My Darling Child Whom I Love Very Much), but still an excellent read!

Eddis's fancy battle outfit
Dress inspired by art by @emilybeemartin inspired by my favorite books by @meganwhalenturner.
I've never been good at fan art or writing, but I've found sewing to be my preferred way of showing love for others' work, people, and place.
I've included Hamiathes's Gift in this. I found the rock in a stream and the cord at a used craft store. The gods haven't blessed this one but it still feels like magic.
(Please ignore the weird doors, I live in a converted barn and the walls are a little weird.)
