Who else. He could pull off Young Gen, King Gen, and God Gen. I love his chill mannerisms and his cheekiness. But whoever has watched BBC's "The Musketeers" knows he can portray a dark, rash and dangerous side as well. The actor has Italian roots btw.

Irene Attolia: Irene Papas

Sadly, this awesome actress died in 2022. She was Greek and played in "The Trojan Women" as well as "Iphigenia" - so, you know, she has the ideal Greek Aristocratic face. Isn't she the perfect Attolia?

Sophos - Christian Martyn

How I found this actor, I don't know. I am not familiar with him, though he played Gilbert Blythe in "Anne with an E". Look. LOOK. Bear with me. He seems innocent, is the definition of too Nice™ and has this precious aura of childlike chaos about him. But he is also able to glow up into a warrior when necessary O_O

Helen Eddis: Nathalie Emmanuel

Okay, look. While I'm personally highly satisfied with the above casts, I know full and well that this one isn't perfect. First of all, Emmanuel is far too thin and pretty to be Eddis. They'd have to change her nose at least, if not give her a rounder body type. But she is dark-skinned, her hair is short, her smile is fun and captivating, and I think this does reflect who Eddis is to some degree. I'm sorry I didn't find anything more accurate.

To comfort you, here are some more random character casts that I found/came up with while working on the others:

King of Sounis - Jack Black

Nahuseresh - Dev Patel. Imagine the reddish beard oh my gosh

Kamet - Riz Ahmed (that one was the author's choice, I believe)

Ambiades - Austin North. Like, come on. He's gotta be the evil version of Sophos and he would be perfect.

Costis - he's honestly just that one real life Kristoff edit from Frozen. No, he's really Channing Tatum in "The Eagle". Look him up.

As for what would happen if The Queen's Thief Series got turned into a movie, I would SCREAM YELL CRY HAPPY TEARS.

They could turn the 6 books into 3 movies, I believe.

The Thief & The Queen of Attolia (the story would have to be slightly changed, e.g. older Gen and different politics, but they can really pull together the whole 125 pages of travelling to the temple into a 5min montage)

The King of Attolia & A Conspiracy of Kings (how Costis became King isn't as important, but it could serve as a sideplot/what Gen is actually contributing politically behind the facade)

Thick as Thieves and Return of the Thief (again, how Kamet came to Attolia isn't as important as the message he brought.)

The Queen's Thief reminds me much of Narnia (the world, the values, the fashion, the colors), Percy Jackson (adventure Greek setting), and Sinbad (adventure + navigating the Gods). If they ever turned that into a movie, I'D WATCH THE HECK OUT OF IT.

Last thing researched for art/writing : The Scream by Edvard Munch to take a class on it.

Fav online fandom memory: oh gosh, I've been here on Tumblr since 2012 or so and I've been pretty seriously involved in fandom stuff. I guess my fav memory would be the bonding we all had ,the really interesting convos, the delectable meta and ultimately the joy of sharing a common interest and making a bunch of amazing friends ❤️

My case with fandoms is that I've got seasonal obsessions. Right now it's Sydcarmy from The Bear. I wasn't part of any fandoms for a long time because of academics , job hunting and everything. So SydCarmy feels pretty special. It just brought me straight back to my old glory days. I'm constantly blown away by the fire ass meta and the analyses here . Cannot wait for S3.

The creators of the show are so thoughtful and precise! Since I wrote about colors and lighting in The Bear. I want (from a cinephile perspective) to observe the lighting and camera choices for 2x08 Bolognese and 2x09 Omelette.

After writing my meta, I listened to this podcast that focuses on The Bear's cinematography; I did this to see if I needed to be more analytical instead of a hardcore shipper. I've pondered on the similar blue lighting of Sydney's tattoo reveal and the love scene, and it's worth noting since there's more Syd & Claire scenes where you can compare the lighting and camera choices.

I interpret the two scenes as high-key lighting. The choice of a well-lit scene sets the mood for more openness and optimism. The visuals give the audience direction to focus on the script and what the actors say in the scene. This lighting choice is in romance and comedy genres. Think wedding scenes as the lighting helps the audience pay attention to the romance happening between two characters.

We can catch everything when it comes to high-key lighting, every expression, movement, and every prop in the scene. The golden sunlight gives the audience a sense of peace, romance, and a dream-like state. The two scenes suggest the warmth the main character feels for the other character on screen.

Notice the scenes where Carmy stares at Sydney? It's primarily high-key lighting. The scenes ask the audience to take notice of Carmy's perspective as he takes in Sydney.

Oh, and remember this quote from Molly (Claire):

The well-lit moment for Claire and Carmy-The lighting and camera movement at the beginning of the scene suggest the morning after, In 2x08, we get this far-away shot where we can see the window as Claire enters the kitchen.

But suddenly, we're zoomed in on Carmy and Claire's faces - this closeness feels overwhelming. It tells of the hidden dread in their relationship. The dreadfulness is prominent when Carmy gets lost, staring at Claire as he talks about the test.

This reminds me of @currymanganese reblog on the subject of color:

The pink hues overlaid on Claire's scenes(2x09 omelette) in Carmy's panic attack can also represent him trying to look at her with rose-colored glasses/rosy retrospection, and ultimately failing to do so because of the way she reminds him of his family

The exchange of looks is so interesting. Notice Carmy's worry, and Claire's smile drops for a second. The camera's movements tell the audience that Carmy looks at Claire differently. As an artist, he catches every detail of the person. The focus on Claire, what used to bring him peace, disappeared when his family ruined his inspiration and sense of joy.

Now, the table scene:

The sun is beaming through the large windows and lingers around Syd and Carmy. It's the brightest the audience has seen from this season; as the camera moves closer to Carmy and Syd, the table disappears and It's a smoother transition, and we barely notice that the table disappears from view as we're closer to the characters.

Like the scene with Claire, Carmy gets lost in staring at Sydney, but there's no sense of dread. Instead, there's almost a dazed look in his eyes as he takes her in.

Well-lit scenes focus on the dialogue, and we can compare the discussion 2x08 and 2x09- both are about sharing their worries and fears. The difference is that the light remains on Carmy and Sydney, and Carmy is completely focused on Sydney rather than what's happening in his head. The scene gives the audience this soft direction to only focus on Sydney and Carmy's few moments together. The lighting asks us to view Sydney like Carmy sees her- bright, warm, and peaceful. I consider this a positive outlook on what's to come for Syd and Carmy.

Sidebar: Another thing to make note of with cinematography- Andrew Wehde said they make notes of the lighting they want to reappear in episodes- so I'm not too far off in this meta.

I think one of my new favorite Sydcarmy scene that I've been watching on repeat is from s2E10 when Carmen gets locked in the freezer and he's desperately yelling at Marcus to get Syd. Carm starts saying "Marcus Get Syd For Me Please" to "GET SYD!", "GET FUCKING SYD!" Following this wonderful post by @devisrina and @currymanganese who pointed it out first.

@currymanganese made a post about the fandom wiki entry on sydney and carmy's relationship, which you can only guess how accurate it is. here's a link to sydney's 'the bear' wiki page as it currently appears.

this is a snippet of sydney's wonderful personality and characterization.

However, she is bad at accepting 'no' or being told not right now. Her perfectionist nature does not allow her to let go of things, either. This often causes her to push for too much, too far, too fast, and then suffer the negative consequences because she did not understand why she was being told not to do something and would not let it go or wait. In times of stress, or rebounding from being treated poorly herself, she forgets her dream of making the kitchen environment safe and can abusively lash out with the worst of them. She resents that her business and administrative skills are often more highly valued at "The Bear" than her chef and cooking skills, though she excels in those areas. She tends to come across to others as young, anxious, and very insecure, wanting a lot of reassurance, until she finds her comfortable regiment and standardized process for completing a task, which allows her talent to come through. She often feels like a fish out of water with the rest of the staff, who are older, poorer, lack formal training, and have long-established ties, but is determined to make it work if it means learning under Carmy and having some control over the kitchen she works in.

this is a snippet of sydney's season 1 section.

Sydney becomes fixated on perfecting the risotto and becomes more aggrieved with every rejection. After being told her latest version is "tremendous", yet still cannot be offered on the dinner menu, Sydney, in a minor act of petty rebellion, serves the dish to a customer. With this act, Sydney is responsible for shoving The Beef down the road to its destruction. The customer, it turns out, is a famous food critic. He writes a glowing review of The Beef, and raves about risotto. The restaurant goes viral. Carmy is peeved, because the reason he wouldn't put the dish on the menu, besides it not being ready, is because risotto is very labor intensive. They do not have the staff to make it during dinner service. Additionally, the high brow dish does not fit the fast casual nature of a sandwich shop's menu. Richie rags on Sydney with suspicion, believing she knew the customer was a critic and gave him her dish to force them to put it on the menu, and to gain herself fame. The restaurant going viral coincides with Sydney's latest innovation push to use ordering tablets and accept online to go orders. Once again going too much, too fast, they begin using the new system before they're ready. Sydney makes a fatal error with the new technology by failing to set up website parameters. As a result, the second the system is turned on, the tiny restaurant is flooded with hundreds upon hundreds of to-go orders, all due for pick up shortly and even more coming in every second. In person, customers are asking for the famous risotto…which is not on the menu. Carmy explodes at Sydney and demands she get out of the way before she keeps making the catastrophe worse, Sydney, who doesn't handle feelings of rejection or inadequacy well, spirals. She lashes out at the staff, and engages in a vicious fight with Richie, who never wanted the tablet system. After saying some truly cruel things about him as a father, Sydney stabs him, whether on purpose or on accident is uncertain, and then immediately resigns amidst the chaos.

and oh look, in season 2, sydney reconnects with claire and goes to al-anon with carmy.

Throughout the process, Sydney reconnects with Claire, who is now a resident in emergency medicine. Sydney attends Al-Anon meetings along with Carmy, discussing her search for fun.

awww sydney faces a setback when ebra stops attending culinary school and sees claire as a threat. sounds about right.

As the opening of The Bear approaches, Sydney continues to work on the menu with Tina's help. She faces a setback when Ebra stops attending culinary school. Sydney also begins to see Claire as a threat to Carmy's focus. Despite these challenges, Sydney remains committed to her role in the restaurant and prepares for the soft opening.

even better, richie alone successfully handles the situation at the soft open. she and carmy even reconcile!

During the soft opening, Sydney feels the pressure to impress her father. She runs the kitchen while Richie takes charge of the front of house. Issues arise, such as running out of forks and Carmy getting trapped in the walk-in fridge. However, Richie successfully handles the situation and takes over expediting. Sydney feels fulfilled after impressing her father, and she and Carmy reconcile.

this page is full of misogynoir and shitty, incorrect OPINIONS about sydney adamu. are these things not supposed to be objective? and yet they make sydney out to be an incompetent, jealous, hysterical, aggressive overstepper. we see this frequently on social media sites when sydney is discussed. and no one ever wants to draw attention to this for some reason. where's the news and media? the hit tweets? the constant posts complaining about this issue?

all people ever want to talk about is how sydcarmy is terrible and how shippers have terrible comprehension of the show. yet this garbage slips by all the time. maybe it's because the same people focusing all their energy on shippers hold those very same opinions, but i think a lot of people simply have tunnel vision and simply do not gaf about sydney.

Season 3 predictions for sydcarmy

I feel like we could get a kiss. This is more out of assumption rather than any real evidence. I think the table scene was intimate enough to plant a seed for something romantic to happen between them in season 3.

After getting cut off the fridge, Sydney is still hesitant towards trusting Carmy. I feel like she'll try to keep everything professional though, putting aside how it might have hurt her personally. Because Carmy isn't normal when it comes to Syd, he needs to know what is up.

They'll have a big argument. This will help them move forward with working together onward.

Sydney will get jealous again. But since Carmy isn't doing anything to intrude with the restaurant milestones, she starts to realise that her annoyance towards his relationship with Claire was also because she likes him more than a business partner.

I think I'm more on the side that they get the star. But if they don't, I think they'll get enough exposure that more people will visit the restaurant.

Connor will continue to flirt with Sydney. While this is not reciprocated, Carmy continues to get jealous of this.

They will become closer as friends. She might even be involved in his family life more.

@currymanganese was talking about a funeral episode with Marcus's mom. I feel like Sydney builds towards emotionally being here for Carmy (as well as helping Marcus) after seeing the effects that it has towards him.

We get a reveal that Sydney never went to the beef with her dad before. I think we might find this out through Carmy talking to her dad one on one. Maybe this could be when she is finishing up service and she's looking around for Carmy and she sees them talking outside. Deciding to cut in, feeling flustered since she knows what's going to come up.

A plea for Angela Bassett to star in The Bear s3

Angela Bassett can ACT! From playing Tina Turner in What’s love gotta do with it, Marie Laveau in American Horror Story, Athena Grant in 911 and lots more, Angela Bassett is constantly doing the thing. It will be an honor to watch her do the thing in The Bear.

I can see Angela playing Sydney’s aunt. I can see the aunt being very protective and not being too fond of the Berzattos. I can see the aunt not liking Carmy so Carmy being Carmy tries to win her over. The Drama!!!

Why does Carmy draw?

Why is it important to his characterization that he draws?

Is it because his true passion is being a visual artist? I don't discount this theory, but it does prompt me to try to understand why he turns toward drawing, and to consider his subjects.

The impression I get is that he draws to realize or manifest something that he wants. He draws to dream, create, become, and maybe just exist.

He drew the restaurant that he wanted to start with his brother, because he wanted to be closer to him and carry on the family legacy together. He drew the Bear right on that building: a reimagining of their family legacy of pain and trauma into what in Donna's words is "this good thing": something good and solid enough to become a physical emblem on the restaurant, a mark in the world.

He drew the girl that he wanted to connect with, who he wished talked to him more. Maybe she was a dream, a fantasy to him, because they never really connected. Yet in his hyper-masculine environment, drawing Claire may have been a way to connect with his own smart, nerdy, "feminine," sensitive self: a counterpart or mirror to him. (Isn't this what the MPDG is about?) But drawing her, her face so accurately on paper, was maybe what allowed him to imagine being gazed back at, to be really loved. Really looking at someone is how Carmy expresses love, Molly Gordon said so herself. It's all about the gaze for Carmy, and the way he looks at both Claire and Sydney has been talked about a lot.

He drew the short wool pants that he wanted to fashion, which is kinda odd-ball and could just be a bit of comedy? But the fact that he drew those short pants, which he found out that a designer had already made, may have proved to him that he was capable of greatness even if it had already been done. And that being odd-ball is ok and interesting and marketable. The odd one in the family could actually dream up something that could be made and exist out there in the real world. (Also pants are a symbolic thing for Carmy, the jeans in the oven, too.)

When he met that pants designer in his restaurant, it was such a full circle moment for him, as he tells Syd. The only image we have gotten so far is him on expo and constructing the plates before they go out, with the EC breathing down his neck and abusing him. We know at that point his cooking was perfectionistic and the environment was rigid, but he is still proud of it.

Which brings me to, he drew the menu he wanted to create with and for Syd. Sistine Chapel level drawings! Syd is a crack up but her joke is not random. She references one of if not the most well-known Renaissance masterpiece there is to refer to Carmy's work, not to mention this is where the Creation of Adam is depicted. Renaissance=Rebirth, ReCreation. This may be the stretchiest I'm stretching here. But I like that Syd is the one who makes sure we all pause with Carmy's drawings and consider this aspect of himself.

(He also had to draw their menu since there was no heat and I need to think about that some more. It's probably a whole seperate meta.)

I do think Carmy is interested in visual arts/fine arts. He hates the painting Nat chose because it doesn't represent him. The painting says Mother but Father is crossed out. Every human birth must have a biological male and female for that Creation to happen.

Maybe he needs to paint his own painting to go in that spot, a means for him to accuratey represent himself, to father himself and be the father in his life, to create himself into an existence that will bring him joy. That's art!

There is a function and a means-to-end in showing us Carmy's drawings. They perhaps tells us a story of his innermost dreams and how he is in the process of Rebirth.

This was fun to write, who knows if any of this theme will bear out, but theories theories, eh?

Officially on the side of Sydney reciprocates her feelings for Carmy, it’s just subconscious and unconventional.

I can’t decide if she’s aware of her feelings for him, I’m leaning towards completely unaware until Claire shows up. Then she’s aware that she felt threatened by Claire - she over explains her reaction to Claire when they were under the table like she’s guilty of being jealous.

I one hundred percent believe that she isn’t aware of Carmy’s feelings for her.

He hasn’t done anything to suggest that he likes her definitively. After the locker scene we get him:

1. Canceling a date

2. Breaking down the wall and not communicating

3. Pulling up with new girl

4. Abandon's his duties and her and starts working on the menu with new girl.

All of these feel like rejection, so she shelves what she feels until he provides her with a safe space to bare all emotionally. Then he ruins it again by abandoning her to go check new girl again. I'm get whiplash thinking about it.

I hope this makes sense.

It takes a minute before she inhales and pulls herself back to stare at him, still keeping their arms locked around each other. “I can’t really believe this.” She picks up the medal on her chest again. “It’s real.” He stares at her with so much longing that it’s probably written all over his skin in ink how much he loves Sydney Adamu. All he wants to do is kiss her again, properly, but he’s afraid that if he starts he won’t be able to stop. Sydney looks just as gone for him as he feels but he can’t tell if it’s her adrenaline from winning or the way she actually feels until she drops the medal and picks up his hand to put it over her heart which is beating at least twice as fast as it should be. “It is.” She whispers. “Thank you.”
