So let me get this right
Edgeworth had a quarter of life crisis, went to Europe to find himself, realised Phoenix gave his life meaning, and came back ready to confess.
Meanwhile Phoenix, who used to openly admire, be worried about and even give excuses to Edgeworth even when he was kinda mean, was so personally offended by how much it hurt him to think he was dead that when he came back Phoenix completely shut down every good emotion he felt towards him and started acting like a petty teenager with a grudge.
And now Edgeworth is the one reaching out and questioning his morality and acting hurt when Phoenix is mean to him. Interesting.

Translation from Gyakuten Saiban Fan Book
Tumblr media
What sort of person is Miles Edgeworth?!
Phoenix's best friend and rival, Edgeworth, has gained a reputation among fans throughout the trilogy of being a man who carefully hides the chinks in his armor. Mr. Inaba and Mr. Iwamoto seem to have rather different opinions on the finer points of his character.
Mr. Inaba's comments
Interviewer: What blood type do you think Edgeworth is? (T/N: in Japan, it's believed that blood type reflects a person's personality)
Inaba: I happen to think he's type B.
Iv: What gives you that impression?
Ia: It's not so much that I dislike B types as I find them intimidating. They seem strong and I feel like I can't stand up to them.  I think good-natured people can generally be found in the O type category (lol).
Iv: By the way, what type are you, Mr. Inaba?
Ia: I'm a meticulous, cleanliness-loving A type Virgo. Also, I think Franziska is an A type like me. On the outside, we look like punks, but we have a fragile side that comes out looking a bit crybaby-ish sometimes. Kinda cute, don't you think?
Iv: Actually, most players seem to feel that Edgeworth is an A type Virgo (lol). So how about his birthday?
Ia: In the winter. I feel like winter suits him.
Iv: What sort of place do you think he lives in?
Ia: Definitely not in an official residence. He seems like he's probably swimming in old heirlooms (lol).
Iv: What sort of hobbies or luxury foods do you think he enjoys?
Ia: I feel like he probably plays some expensive sports and lounges at home in his robe with a glass of wine. My image of him is that he's like a host club host. His lifestyle is like a host's (lol).
Iv: Do you think he listens to music?
Ia: I feel like if I say he listens to classical, that would make him seem too proper, so… I think he listens to new and old American and European music equally.
Iv: Do you think he has a cellphone?
Ia: He's definitely got one. One with a simple but sleek design.
Iv: And finally, what do you think his type is?
Ia: Hmmm… someone warm, I guess? This is kinda basic, but I feel like he cares more about how someone is on the inside, rather than their appearance, and he probably prioritizes personality. He might be surprisingly disinterested in women. Maybe he'd accidentally treat his partner coldly or something. Oh, I kinda touched on this earlier, but for Franziska, I think she seems like the type who'd be difficult to win over but would fall in love surprisingly easily, so I hope Edgeworth will do his best (lol).
Mr. Iwamoto's comments
Iv: Mr. Inaba said he thinks Edgeworth was born in the winter, and players overwhelmingly agreed with that. What do you think, Iwamoto-san?
Iwamoto: Edgeworth was born in June, just like me who voiced him in the games! And I think he was born in Chiba Prefecture because I was too (lol).
Iv: So from your position as the voice of Edgeworth (lol), what type of place do you think he lives in?
Iw: Either a designer penthouse, or somewhere surprisingly simple, like a place with plain concrete walls. I feel like he lives in an unexpectedly functional apartment. At least more than you might think, based on his frilly outfit.
Iv: So considering the type of room you imagine him living in, what sort of clothes do you think he wears at home?
Iw: Clothes that are out of touch with reality. Like the kinds of things most normal people wouldn't wear, or like… Like he wears silk just because, or instead of a regular shirt, a prince-like blouse. I feel like Manfred Von Karma probably influenced him there, but he dresses more plainly now than he did when he was younger (lol).
Iv: Maybe he started to notice that he didn't quite fit in with others (lol). It might be because of his frilly clothes, but he seems to be in better shape than Wright. Is his build based on your own, Iwamoto-san?
Iw: No way (lol). But I did sneakily make him the same height as myself.
Iv: Since he's in such good shape, do you think he does sports?
Iw: Maybe long distance running. He seems like the type who might go out jogging by himself in silence to "outrun his sins…" (lol)
Iv: What do you think his blood type is?
Iw: B type. I don't really have any real basis for that, he just strikes me as a B type.
Iv: And what do you think Edgeworth's type is?
Iw: Let's see, maybe someone enthusiastic and passionate? (Lol) Like maybe he likes the kind of person who charges recklessly into things? And that's not just for women but in general the type of person he likes.

2022 Writing Roundup
A masterlist of all the fic I did in 2022! I'm honestly so proud of myself and astounded. S/O to Ace Attorney for making me write more in a single year than I think I ever have in my entire life, this franchise is something else.
If you’re a big reader of mine who’s maybe worried you missed something, worry no more! Here’s a post for you to catch up. Or you can just celebrate with me :]
The only fandom I wrote for this year was AA, so not gonna bother separating them by fandom lol.
don't give out (don't give up) | Franziska & Phoenix | 11.3k - An incredibly introspective sickfic about Fran & Phoenix’s weird fucking existence in relation to one another. On the tail end of 3-5 she finds herself sick with the same thing he had and he takes a couple hundred lashings in an attempt to keep an eye on her. Feelings happen. An understanding is maybe reached. The first AA fic I ever wrote! I’m proud of it.
the prosecution rests (in her girlfriend's arms) | Franziska/Maya | 16.5k - Two FranMaya sickfics I wrote for FranMaya week’s h/c prompt! Two different points in their relationship, one where Fran is sick and the other where Maya is. I wanted to write something exceedingly self indulgent without a single apology and that’s what chapter 1 is. Chapter 2 was fueled entirely by my love of the feverish confession trope.
Strahlender Karmaritter | Franziska & Miles | 15.1k - Long, heavily introspective, purple prose-y character analysis about Franziska von Karma’s life, rising above the immense and unforgivable pain she’s been forced to endure, and learning to let go and heal. Follows her from early childhood and through the events of the OG trilogy, mostly just talking about how much she loves her brother. This is my kindump fic. This is my pride and joy. If you never read any of my AA fics at least read this one. I bled my heart and soul into it. I love this fic like a sister.
[YOU ARE NOW ENTERING: THE SICKTEMBER ZONE]
These are all fics I did for Sicktember 2022! All of these are simple, cozy little sickfics and almost all of them about about Franziska & everyone she loves. If you’ve ever read a sickfic and been like, damn I wish the author had 29 more fics exactly like this one, worry not! I can be your savior, and I will have a super fuckin healthy ego about it.
Careful Façades | Franziska/Maya | 2.9k - It’s time for the girlies to go on their first date! Wowa! Maya was already nervous and that was before she ended up catching a cold the night of. Hiding this from Franziska is fruitless. They stay in and elect to cuddle instead.
i am above you (and i love you) | Miles (& a little Franziska) | 1.8k - Miles takes a rare sick day and reflects on some of the different ways people in his life have cared for him, and what it means to feel home.
Bare Bones | Franziska/Maya | 1.7k - Franziska thinks efficiently: if you’re sick, you should treat your symptoms in the most effective way, for maximum wellness and comfort, so that you may get on with your damned life. Maya thinks that a paper kitchen towel is an acceptable tissue and that painkillers are a good enough substitute for Coldkiller. They love each other, really they do.
sing louder than you've sung, for me | Franziska & Miles | 2k - Franziska’s 14 and doesn’t know her limits when it comes to alcohol, but good luck telling her that without getting flayed to ribbons. Miles takes care of her during the inevitable post-christmas hangover. It mostly works.
No Whipping the Sick! | Franziska & Phoenix | 1.9k - Set in the middle of 3-5, Franziska and Phoenix investigate Hazakura while he is still in absolutely no condition to be upright, and something about her--however subtle--is just a little bit softer than usual.
gone off to the coast | Manfred von Karma | 1.4k - loser old man convalesces alone at his private beachhouse with his shoulder pumped full of lead ‘cause he’s a fucking shit for brains idiot. through the haze of pain and fever or maybe something else entirely, he starts seeing ghosts.
Chicken Soup for the Prosecution's Soul | Franziska/Maya | 2.6k - Franziska, idiot, is standing trial with what is probably the most emphatic headcold to ever grace mankind. Maya decides she’s going to do something about it.
If It Weren't For That Meddling Medium | Franziska/Maya | 5.6k - It’s supposed to be a universal truth to anyone with eyes that Franziska is not someone you should ever attempt to baby or coddle. But... maybe all the poor fools who’ve tried simply didn’t try hard enough, and Maya is not someone who easily gives in. This is another very personal, very special fic to me, one I wrote a lot of my own feelings and desires into. If you’re only gonna read a handful of my sicktember fics this is definitely one I’d recommend.
Gute Besserung | Franziska/Maya | 2k - You guys ever tried that fucked up ginger tea that the germans make that’s just like. Straight up boiled ginger with like maybe 1 lemon slice if you’re lucky? Is this just me? Just my family? I feel like I’m drinking fucking pinesol. I hate that it works. Anyways I somehow projected onto Maya for this fic, a very rare phenomenon indeed.
Dry Drowning | Franziska/Maya | 2.6k - Franziska is an idiot who is bad at being sick, and Maya is going to attack her like a wild animal if she does not stop sniffling every five seconds. One of my friends & favourite commenters left on this fic my favourite feedback I’ve ever gotten on any sickfic I’ve written to date, “You made Franziska so gross in this one,” which I think I want tattooed. In 2023 I vow to make her grosser.
You Have the Right to Remain in Bed | Franziska/Maya & Gumshoe | 3.3k - Franziska willingly takes a sick day and Gumshoe, naturally, thinks something must be horribly wrong. He takes it upon himself to do some rogue investigating. This is Ace Attorney, so chaos fucking ensures.
make me proud / make mistakes / make me laugh | Franziska & Manfred | 3.6k - Franziska overdoes it in her nonstop pre-Bar studying, and her papa looks after her and tries not to think too hard about all the little pieces of him she seems to contain. hugs this fic. I love this fic so so so much, I am so happy I got to write it.
Innerer Schweinehund | Franziska & Miles | 2.2k - The first part of my ‘Franziska has dog allergies’ agenda, a headcanon I am attached to entirely because of how funny it is. This is a fic about her stressing her brother out by shoving her face directly into his dog, and how she does this every time, and how Miles is still somehow surprised every goddamn time it happens.
Waldeinsamkeit | Franziska/Maya | 4.3k - Franziska and Maya go on a little vacation in a cabin in the cascades, Franziska gets sick and insists she’s fine, and then Maya catches it from her and does not agree. Then they are soft and cuddle in the hot tub.
Red (Velvet) | Franziska & Miles | 4.2k - Through her own typical stubbornness, 13 year old Fran gets a bad sunburn. She does not stop being a brat about this even as it’s worsening, but Miles, at least, is used to that by now. He does his best to tend to her. Officially, he is not her big brother, but every once in a while he comes very close to acting like one.
(with love) from me to you | Franziska/Maya | 3.2k - When Maya came down sick on their holiday, Franziska was more than welcome to spend it doting and making sure her wife was cozy. She was NOT, however, similarly amicable to Interpol calling her away for necessary business when she explicitly told them she’d be unavailable. Still, she does her best to make sure Maya feels as loved as she is from afar.
Unter einer Decke stecken | Franziska & Miles | 2.2k - Franziska, even as an elementary school-aged child, is very good at a great many things. One thing she is not good at is resisting to urge to check up on her shiny brand new brother when he’s miserably sick and confined to his room. Naturally this ends up being an illness that they share. It’s ok tho they’ve got power rangers
let the record show (i told you so) | Franziska & Miles | 3.6k - Miles knows how picky of an eater his incredibly autistic sister is, and so when she warns him about the quality of the food at this dive, he is certain that it is just that. Until several hours later when he is thoroughly food poisoned. He expects absolutely no mercy from her, but it seems she’s still got just a little bit to give.
Streicheleinheiten | Franziska/Maya | 1.5k - I just really wanted to make Fran so sick she cried about it and her girlfriend loves her soooooo much.
Ice-Breaker | Franziska/Maya | 2.3k - Just a good ol fashioned tropey sickfic about local idiot Franziska von Karma trying to go to work with a fever and her girlfriend lovingly dragging her back to bed. Sometimes you gotta get back to basics :]
Gemütlichkeit | Franziska/Maya | 6.7k - THE CROWN JEWEL OF MY SICKTEMBERS! Based 99% on true events. Franziska comes down sick in such a moment and in such a way that she is certain it is meant to be a plot device in the movie that is her life. Every second of it seems better suited to a sitcom episode, certainly not reality. Nevertheless Maya is there to scoop her up and make her feel all better after a long, long, long fucking day. I wanted to write this fic for YEARS and finally getting to it was everything I ever hoped for.
Tender Loathing Care | Franziska & Phoenix | 2.8k - Phoenix finds Franziska in her shitty temp office battling the flu and insisting she doesn’t have the flu. There’s a genuine attempt made to look after her. They are trying their best.
As You Wish | Franziska/Maya | 3.8k - Maya goes overboard with her waterfall thing and catches a cold (again), but this time Franziska is nearby to keep her warm make her feel better. And they flirt lots and are soooo soft and Franziska is really really really butch.
Wintersonnenstrahl, kalt wie Vichysoisse | Franziska & Miles | 2.1k - Miles drives his sister to the emergency room as she bleeds out on his overpriced upholstery and complains the entire time. Set during 2-4, so naturally she is very very rightfully upset with him, but at the end of the day it would take armageddon to fully snuff out the love that’s still there.
Pantoffelheld | Franziska/Maya | 5.7k | NSFW - Surprise! It’s smut! Franziska and Maya have not yet come to truly define their relationship but one thing, at least, is fundamentally clear: they are very in love and profoundly horny for one another. Maya wasn’t really expecting their first time to happen while she was disgustingly ill and covered in vapor rub but a fuck is a fuck and she’ll fuck Franziska anytime anywhere.
fine print (written in the stars) | Franziska/Maya | 4.1k - A casual date in Franziska’s neck of the woods is cut short when it becomes abundantly clear just how sick Maya actually is, but that doesn’t stop the two of them from enjoying their time spent together, and it certainly doesn’t stop Maya from being her usual charming self.
Threefold Law | Franziska & Everyone | 3.9k - Set directly after 3-5 and a sequel to my last 3-5 fic! Staying awake for 40+ hours, locking herself in a freezing temple, and spending hours with Phoenix while he was sick have not been kind to Franziska. She now finds herself forced into a loud dinner while miserably symptomatic, barely able to stay lucid, but there’s a lot of people looking out for her, doing what they can to make her a little more comfy. She deserves it, after all her hard work.
Earthshaker / Skyquaker | Franziska & Miles | 2.3k - A feverish Franziska is always a little more loose-lipped, a little easier to crack open. Her and Miles bond over two fundamentally different traumas, meeting for a brief moment on some ephemeral horizon. Set in the gap between games 2 and 3, while Miles was vaguely described as being somewhere in Europe.
Fix und Fertig | Franziska & Gumshoe | 3.5k - Taking place smack dab in the middle of game 2, Franziska comes to work sick and Gumshoe hovers in her general peripheral looking like a kicked animal because he can’t scoop her up and make her soup without getting stomped to death by her hooves. Eventually, though, through sheer exhaustion alone, she relents.
Resisting A Rest | Franziska/Maya | 2.9k - Maya awakens to the sound of her sick girlfriend doing whip practice on the balcony despite the fact that she should be doing literally anything else. She wrestles her onto the couch and kisses her until she stops complaining.
[YOU ARE NOW EXITING THE SICKTEMBER ZONE]
Without Question | Franziska & Manfred | 5.2k - A request! Franziska’s home sick and her papa looks after (see: deals with) her. When he refuses to let her return the favour, she tears him and a new one until he agrees to watch power rangers with her.
Cinnamon-Sugar | Franziska & Mia / Franziska/Maya | 3.5k - Spirit magic and spirits in general are tied very heavily to emotions. Maya has a habit of sleep-channeling when she dreams, and Franziska has grown strangely used to waking up to find Mia in the living room, writing by lamplight. Tonight, like all nights, they talk about Maya.
State v. Histamines | Franziska & Miles | 3.7k - Franziska loving flowers and being allergic to dogs 🤝 Miles loving dogs and being allergic to flowers. Apparently I thought this was a funny enough concept to carry a fic. And I was right.
Forgetmenots and Marigolds | Franziska & Gregory & Miles | 7.5k - Surprise! I can write things that aren’t sickfic! Miles is finally ready to take Maya up on her offer to channel Gregory, but his nerves are a mess and he’d like his sister there for emotional support. Franziska cannot imagine why he’d ever ask such a thing of her, given everything. Nevertheless, she accompanies him, and not a single one of them come out of it not crying. If my reviews are anything to go by, you will also cry.
TOTAL FIC COUNT: 37 Individual works!
TOTAL WORD COUNT: 155711 words!
What an amazing fucking year for writing! Sicktember was a big challenge to myself this year--I always thought I wasn’t made for monthly challenges, because I always thought I wasn’t made for deadlines, and the idea of writing and completing a piece every single day was terrifying. Turns out, if the prompts are posted early, I’m great at it! I loved planning and executing. It was also a challenge to myself to not force myself to outline things or write profound, deep shit. Sometimes a story can just be light and fluffy like junk food or a home cooked meal, and that is OKAY.
This year I challenged myself to not be a raging perfectionist, and to just write, AND I SUCCEEDED! And I am STILL proud of and in love with everything I’ve written, even if it isn’t up to my own impossible standards. WE LOVE GROWTH!!!!!!
Merry fic!!! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!

Ace Attorney: Investigations thoughts
Now that I’ve finished it...
I have so many thoughts about Edgeworth’s first spin-off game it’s unreal.  In no particular order...
Detective Badd gets the honorary nickname of “Detective Baddass” from me.  He deserves it.  (Also the idea that he’s basically Gumshoe’s mentor is incredibly awesome.  “Never lose your detective’s spirit.”  Aaaaaa.)
I would have been interested in seeing Byrne Faraday and Tyrell Badd being a capable prosecutor-detective duo working on more cases.
Wow, Manfred von Karma showed up in the flashback case and managed to be even more awful!  ... Wait.  That’s not exactly breaking news.
For being a prosecutor, Edgeworth sure spends a lot of time arguing in people’s defense.  He’s defended Kay, Maggey, Gumshoe, Larry and even Franziska throughout this game.
Edgeworth’s inner monologue lets me know that he’s not nearly as composed as he appears to be in court.  He’s also just some guy, only with a fancier suit than Phoenix Wright.
Giving Edgeworth a moral dilemma (whether or not to use illegal evidence to go after someone who appears to be above the law) is a great internal conflict to give him.
Gumshoe is at his absolute best in the Turnabout Ablaze investigation segments getting crucial evidence and being moral support, and I am here for it!
Having Edgeworth’s rival, Shi-Long Lang be a good person at heart and not the final culprit is honestly very refreshing.
Speaking of Lang, I wonder if he’s got any relatives waiting for him back home. I love the idea of him maybe having a mother or grandmother who positively dotes over him and treats him like a kid (no matter how grown up he is.)
The “gang’s all here” moment in the finale was just wonderful. Edgeworth has so many people who will always come through for him. It’s heartwarming to see.  He’s come a long way from being lonely and lost post-Turnabout Goodbyes.
I will be honest with y’all.  The battle vs. Alba at the end dragged out forever.  He just would not give up!  I was almost wishing there was a button I could press to start “trial by combat” where we could settle the whole thing with a duel instead.  Alas, Ace Attorney isn’t and never will be a fighting type series.  Only evidence will do.  (But seriously, I hated Alba’s testimonies.)
The ending montage showing everyone!  I was wondering if I’d see one, since Investigations is under a different writer than the original trilogy.  But there was one and it was splendid.  To me, the credits sequence with the “where are they now” segments for all the different side characters - this was very much in the spirit of the original trilogy and I appreciate this touch.
The last touch carried over from the original trilogy is this:
Tumblr media
The finale case photo.  Our snapshot of happiness after so many mysteries solved, and justice served.  It’s a great note to end on.
My journey through the Ace Attorney series will continue with Investigations 2: Prosecutor’s Path when I take it up next!
Until then, see y’all around!  You better believe I will be deep diving into the tags for even more fanart of the characters I’ve come to know and love.

uhm. i am interested in the lanamia cowboy au (eyes emoji)
: OO
>: D
under the cut cause its p long djkwhdhwje
lana in this au is a traveling ranger, with her superior being Gregory Edgeworth, a kind but tragic man whos child was kidnapped back in Gregory's lawyer days!
Gregory dispatches lana (and her horse Neil) (she brings ema too but Ema is like. 8 in this au) to the texas town of Rio Fria (cold river in English) because of reports that the town has corrupt officials.
Mia and maya (who is 7) are owners of the town saloon. phoenix works there and lives with the feys : -).
when lana arrives, the town sheriff Damon Gant shows her around, how nice!
anyway, Lana frequents the saloon (bc the owner helps her know all that goes on in the town and... and is also rlly hot) and after she goes a couple of times, the young waiter named Phoenix pulls her aside and explains that the town IS corrupt and everyone knows, but they can't get evidence.
on the other side of town, the vicious town deputy Red gets an order from mayor Von Karma to challenge the new ranger whos been asking a lot of questions to a duel.
Back at the saloon, lana asks why phoenix is telling her all of this and he replies that there's someone in need of saving and he wants to help them by helping lana.
Red arrives and He gets his duel. Lana wins by shooting his right hand.
The town doctor, Marvin Grossberg is good, but too drunk to help most of the time, so Lana is the one who treats his wounds. (Lana usually drops ema off at the saloon while she treats Red) they get closer and Red says his real name is Miles Edgeworth, Gregory's long-lost son! During the time that lana is treating Miles, he breaks down and has Character Development (this Character development is also caused by phoenix's many visits to see miles) .
He explains all of the corruption that he's aware of in the town including the mayor Manfred von Karma (his old guardian) and the sheriff Damon Gant forging evidence in the murder of Mia's ex, Diego Armando because he was going to expose the mayor for election fraud and Damon helped! (manfred offered Damon the sheriff position if he helped)
they continue like this for a few days with lana gathering information and treating miles's gunshot. until one night, Mia bursts in with maya whos sobbing. She explains that ema has been kidnapped at gunpoint by the town's sherrif! (his plan is to get lana to stop her investigation or her sister dies)
lana finds Sherriff gant on the outskirts of town. Lana challenges him to a duel and he agrees bc he has an overinflated ego. lana wins and shoots him just left of his heart. at first he thinks she missed, but she explains that the only reason she didnt shoot him dead is so he can confess to all the wrongdoing hes done. Gant agrees under threat of death and turns in incriminating letters he saved as insurance agaisnt manfred which get manfred convicted too.
its the last day of lanas investigation before she leaves and shes packing up. emas still a little traumatized from being kidnapped but mostly sad shes leaving the town bc she likes it there. Lana explains that they cant stay because her job makes her move around alot, but mia (who is helping lana pack in the next room) overhears this and gets an idea. the town is looking for a new sheriff, and since the mayor was also arrested, Mia has been thinking of running for mayor. Lana thinks its a great idea, but is disappointed she wont see Gregory again. Lana calls gregory to tell him she is staying and he seems quite excited! it turns out, since he found out his son is alive and well (though lanas reports), he wants to retire to rio fria. Mia wins the election, lana is instated as the town sherrif, the saloon is run by phoenix and since miles was just following orders he is allowed to stay deputy. : -) lana and mia then get married : -)

I don't necessarily think it's hinted as them having feelings for each other I mean clearly she has feelings for him but I think that he just has some memories of her that are fond (which would be wildly confusing and interesting to explore because of all the trauma surrounding that) and he has compassion for her because he's kind, even to a fault. I think they probably wind up having a conversation or two to try to resolve some of that confusion and give him an opportunity to reconcile some of his memories of hers because it seems like he really clearly has had a lot of cognitive dissonance around that time in his life. I think that flattening it into, he would never forgive her and always hate her (over simplification, I know), does a disservice to his character. I don't think they could retain a friendship but I think that he's owed some answers, and I think that he is, at his core, too kind and compassionate to hold on to hatred. he may always resent her, and there's no future for them in any capacity but I think that it's a little more nuanced on both sides? obviously I don't think what she did was okay but I think his reactions to her would be a bit more complicated and conflicted. feel free to ignore this btw it's probably not very coherent. I just have thoughts on the subject I guess
Those are some interesting points! I can see where you're coming from about Phoenix being the type of person to not hold any grudges. I think he does have a lot of compassion for other people and tends to give them the benefit of the doubt, so there are very few people he actively dislikes/hates. That being said, I do think there are several people in the game he would have a lasting resentment for. People such as Manfred von Karma, de Killer, and Dahlia. Iris is definitely in more of a gray area of all that because she was never directly involved with most of Dahlia's crimes. I'm sure she and Phoenix had a lot of good memories together, but I just can't see Phoenix looking back at those fondly after learning she was Dahlia's twin; I think they would all be slightly tarnished because he was really dating a completely separate person than he originally thought he was and was left with lasting trust issues. So maybe he doesn't outright resent her, but I do think because of all the trauma he has from that time of his life, and how she was involved in a big lie to pretend to be her sister and date him purely just to get the necklace back (at least initially, until she did fall in love with him for real), he still wouldn't want anything to do with her.
Would he still want answers? Yes, very much so. That plays into why he chose to defend her in the trial, because it's unclear at this point to him whether or not this is Dahlia just in a different disguise. I think most of the questions he had were probably answered during the course of the trial so I'm not sure he would visit her afterwards to continue talking to her. Maybe once just to clear up any remaining questions, but for me, that's a big maybe.
As for it being hinted that they have feelings for each other, that's just how I took Iris' credit scene. Specifically the line where she goes "Of course I was happy that you constantly had your eyes on me." To me, that seems to imply that they both have feelings for each other still, which doesn't really... sit right with me. I can see how Iris would still like him because he was one of the few people in her life who actually treated her kindly, but as I mentioned before, I think Phoenix would have lasting trust issues because of the whole Dahlia and Iris situation, so it just doesn't sit right with me that the game even had a line in there that could be interpreted as them still liking each other.
Thank you for the ask, you brought up some interesting points!

More Roleswap AU Part 2: Defense Attorney Miles’ Frustrating Friendship with Prosecutor Phoenix
Tumblr media
Continuing from how Prosecutor Phoenix’s dysfunctional way of caring with people that mattered to him affects them, the one with Miles took a post of its own.
So from what I’ve said from my other post, “Phoenix has a big heart but it's twisted from growing up from Manfred's emotional abuse of control and shame. So if Phoenix's heart is a house, the door is open but they're only allowed on the porch, looking in but blocked by Phoenix himself from ever getting inside. ”
So how does this affects Miles Edgeworth?
When child Phoenix Wright suddenly moved out without warning, young Miles and Gregory treated it as a case that needed to be investigated. They found out that Phoenix’s parent died. That Manfred von Karma, whom Gregory had called out his evidence tampering, adopted him (Gregory didn’t like this at all). That Manfred moved back to Germany with Phoenix (Gregory didn’t like this at all even more). Gregory could only hope and assure Miles that since Manfred has a daughter, Manfred had taken in Phoenix sincerely. Miles was not convinced.
Miles tried writing letters to the address that Gregory had gotten. There was no response but they knew the letters were being received. Gregory tried to write a letter to Manfred but was replied with a formal but kind of deranged “fuck around and find out and it’s none of your beeswax and you will one day get retribution for marring my perfect record” letter. Gregory kept that letter to himself in order not to worry Mile who was looking forward to them meeting again as there is a possibility that Phoenix would become a lawyer too.
If Defense Attorney Wright had ADHD with no friendship degradation mechanics, I headcanon that Miles has autism with attachment to his childhood friendship with Phoenix.
He had tried online means of communicating years later. Phoenix doesn’t bother with facebook. Miles sent an email and got a superficial response. When he replied to that to build into it, it was ignored.
It doesn’t help at all when they met again as prosecutor and defense attorney with Gregory having been murdered and having to defend the daughter of a family friend that he had only heard of.
Prosecutor Phoenix felt anything but peace when Miles broke his perfect record. Of course, it would be the smart kid who had defended him who would defeat him. His once perfect record was the only thing that Manfred von Karma couldn’t touch of him, now Miles took that away in his idealistic righteousness of saving people who don’t deserve (funnily enough, Phoenix included himself in that). It didn’t help that Miles’ righteousness rubbed him the wrong way with how Miles had looked at him with anger and sadness and disappointment because who was he to feel? They were in a courtroom. (See Closed Off Phoenix mode)
When Will Powers got arrested, Phoenix knew that Miles is a big fan of Steel Samurai. He was going to rip Miles a new one in court with this case by getting a guilty verdict on his favorite actor. Much to Miles and Maya’s surprise, he changed his mind, not knowing it’s because Gumshoe told what happened with Dee Vasquez. (In this universe, Gumshoe had told Phoenix because despite their dysfunctional “friendship”, Prosecutor Phoenix is more approachable than Prosecutor Edgeworth)
Prosecutor Phoenix is just as surprised as them with his actions and hated himself for it. He wasn’t supposed to feel. Unlike Prosecutor Edgeworth who told Defense Attorney Wright that he doesn’t want to see him again, Prosecutor Phoenix did what von Karma would do to him: give him nothing. Defense Attorney Edeworth caught Phoenix’s eye and all Phoenix did was raised a brow and turn his back on him, little did Phoenix know, that had hurt Miles.
All Miles had wanted since Phoenix went away was to get his friend back. Maybe he had idealized the way childhood Phoenix had connected with him since it never happened again with other people his age growing up. Maybe that childhood Phoenix was gone. Logically, the best course of action was to move on, but it kinda hurt whenever he sees him.
The dynamic changed when Miles successfully defended Phoenix from murder of both cases. Phoenix was now more willing to talk to him but kept it professional. Miles who had always been socially awkward doesn’t know how to bridge the gap as much as he wanted to and as much as Maya tried to encourage him. Miles had tried to talk to Phoenix about what he had gone through because of Manfred but Phoenix would often try to keep it light. Phoenix does the 3 D’s: dodge, distract, dismiss. Any pushing further would upset the delicate balance that Miles was not confident to test.
After the Skye case, Phoenix felt he had no leg to stand on anymore. He had thought von Karma may have taught him, but all the cases he had won was through his own effort. Now, that was no longer true. Who was he anymore without the things that he used to believe in? It started to get worse when the pain and anger and grief and the nightmares that demanded to be felt came crashing down. Who was he without the constant battle with Manfred in and outside of his head? How could he?! Why had Phoenix never saw it before? He had failed people for becoming who he was. Do they even deserve...?
Phoenix was no stranger to blowing off shame and judgment. Also he worked best under high stress. So he went into Younger Beanix mode and created another identity to buy his tickets out of the country. Then when he met Miles again, intentionally made a dick move to anger him for a long time so that when Miles would hear that Phoenix left to take a sabbatical, he wouldn’t give a shit. Not to mention, Phoenix thought he didn’t deserve Miles care and he didn’t want to burden Miles with the need to save him again and again. He also blocked Franziska’s number and gave Gumshoe the wrong details of when he would leave and where just to cover his tracks.
Miles eventually figured out when he disappeared that Phoenix had hurt him to prevent him from intervening. He was mad Phoenix at once he realized that and mad at himself for not realizing it sooner. And upset that he wasn’t enough.
The emotional betrayal traumatized Miles when he already struggle with connecting with other people, especially when it’s Phoenix that he wanted to re-connect with the most.
Miles Edgeworth had already closed his heart on Phoenix since then. He would’ve refused any communication with Phoenix if it wasn’t for the Engarde case. They had reached a degree of closure after but Phoenix wasn’t done with his sabbatical.
As far as Phoenix was concerned, he wasn’t equal yet to Miles in terms of searching for the truth in the courtroom. With the best intentions, he was chasing after Miles professionally in quality. But within their friendship, some damage has been done. Phoenix still has the struggle to allow Miles and himself to be vulnerable without the need to dismiss, distract and dodge. In fact, he owed Kay, Gumshoe, Sebastian and Franziska of it too. And while Miles has partially opened his door to Phoenix again, he has to learn and trust Miles again beyond their professional partnership.
What About Trucy Gramarye?
Fortunately, Prosecutor Phoenix was in a better place by the time Trucy came around. When he was back in Japanifornia after Zak left Trucy, Phoenix sees a kid greeting him with a showman’s bravado in the face of abandonment and in the mercy strange adults. He cannot not adopt her and get her away from the mess.

Can't speak for anyone else but I for one would love an incoherent rant about the dark age of the law plotline
Alright buckle up kiddos.
So I have a lot of complaints with Dual Destinies as a whole. It’s a poorly paced mess, the final confrontation was deeply underwhelming, it has all these weird “Gotcha” moments where they put in the most bizarre, logic breaking plot twists and then undo them within ten minutes completely for shock value. And yet, despite all of these issues, there is nothing in this world that pisses me off more than the words “The Dark Age of the Law.”
I hate the Dark Age of the Law subplot more than literally any other thing in Ace Attorney. It is a complete failure of a story in literally every possible way. It not only doesn’t work within the context of Dual Destinies, it also completely flies in the face of everything we understand about the original trilogy! It!!!! Sucks!!!!
But no. That was too coherent. I think we should break this down.
First I’m going to start on a macro level. The Dark Age of the Law is the clearest indication to me that the writers of Dual Destinies never played another Ace Attorney game. They treat this Dark Age of the Law thing like this big bad, this shiny new toy, this never before seen wonder, but??? Corruption has been a CENTRAL part of every single AA game since game one!! Since case 2 even!!!
The Dark Age of the Law is this whole idea that people have lost their trust in the court system. And what do they site as the catalyst for this breaking of trust? Phoenix Wright’s disbarment and Simon Blackquill’s arrest.
And okay. Phoenix Wright’s disbarment is a reasonable one. Phoenix was sort of known for being this paragon of truth and justice, this man willing to do what it took to find the truth and protect people in need. His name being smeared through the mud could very well shake up the foundations of trust that the people had in the court system.
But Simon Blackquill? Simon FUCKING Blackquill shook up people’s faith in the court system?? Simon Blackquill is the reason that people are convinced that the entire system is full of lies and deceit? SIMON CONFESSED!! He didn’t even do anything corrupt!! He murdered a woman, sure, but he then immediately lets everyone know “Yes, I super did this murder. No one else.” And they treat it like it’s this big turning point??
LANA SKYE!! You guys remember Lana Skye? The Chief Prosecutor at the time, who was accused of murder, and who still went to prison for doing like a million other crimes after being blackmailed by the chief of police.
SPEAKING OF WHICH the fucking CHIEF OF POLICE was a murderous monster who blackmailed people and also murdered. Did that have no effect on people’s trust in the courts?
Manfred von Karma? Never lost a case in 40 years, literally everyone talked about how he and Miles were KNOWN to be corrupt? Also, you know, murdered a man in cold blood?
Blaise Debeste??? Chairman of the fucking ETHICS BOARD???????? Like!!! That’s some deep fucking corruption right there!!!! And he constantly talks about the mysterious disappearances around him of people who disagreed with him, does that not shake your faith?!
In Turnabout Sisters, as early as case 1-2, Redd White calls up the Chief Prosecutor (who also is not Lana, just to be clear) and demands his complicitness in covering up his own crimes. That’s how central corruption is to the entirety of Ace Attorney.
And you’re going to look me in the fucking EYES and tell me Simon Blackquill, some 21 year old nobody with no power or influence, who theoretically stabbed a woman and made no effort to cover that up, is the reason the courts have lost the faith of the people? You have the NERVE??? the AUDACITY??? the fucking GALL????? to tell me that SIMON is what caused this? The system was never trustworthy, and if it was, what the FUCK did Simon have to do with changing that???
Horrible. Terrible. Disgusting.
BUT
Let’s pretend for a moment that Dual Destinies existed in a vacuum. First Ace Attorney game you’ve ever played. Never touched another one in your life. If you were unfamiliar with the world that Ace Attorney has already spent six games establishing, does the Dark Age of the Law subplot hold up?
No. No it doesn’t.
So as I’ve said a million times before, it was clear that Dual Destinies should not have tried to juggle three protagonists. It just didn’t work. They learned their lesson and booted Athena out of that protagonist title in SoJ, and as much as I hated that decision, it was at least a much stronger overarching story for it.
Now. There were three main throughlines in Dual Destinies. Athena’s story centered on introducing her, of course, but it also was about her struggle to save a friend who needed saving from the law and also himself. It was very AA1 in that way.
Apollo’s story was a little harder to outline, because a lot of it is saved for the last couple of cases, but it’s really about his relationship with Athena. Coming to trust her, his trust in her being shaken, struggling to overcome that, grief, loss, yadda yadda, and I have my criticisms of how it’s handled, but that’s the gist of it.
And Phoenix needed a story. So they made up this stupid fucking bullshit garbage and dumped it in his lap and said “Here you go, best friend! Our dear money maker! This is what you’re working with!” And then they proceeded to use it to beat the shit out of Phoenix until he started spitting out dollar bills.
Okay no sorry I have no idea what the fuck I just said but liSTEN
The Dark Age of the Law storyline was clearly supposed to have some significant thematic relevance to the story, given how hard they were hammering it into us in case three. It was supposed to mean something, and I think it was supposed to mean something to Phoenix in particular. After all, he and Miles won’t stop TALKING ABOUT IT GOD MAKE THEM SHUT UP
The Dark Age of the Law subplot had nothing to do with that final case. Remove it, and nothing changes, because, again, Simon had nothing to do with the corruption in the first place, and the Phantom certainly had nothing to do with corruption. It’s so surface level. “Uh oh, people don’t like the courts. If you can solve this unrelated crime, everything will be fixed.” And then he does (also Athena should’ve been the one to win the case, but that’s a different problem) and nothing ever comes of it, other than “Hooray, you fixed the corruption!” He didn’t??? Miles what the fuck are you talking about????
If they had woven in the corruption throughout the story somehow, maybe it would’ve found some way to be impactful? But it was a floundering, half-thought-out subplot in an already bloated game that failed to give any meaning or help anyone develop as a character. Hell, it kept falling out of relevancy and only popped in to rear its head when the writers remembered it existed and decided to have yet another person remind us that THIS IS IMPORTANT GUYS NO REALLY.
Like! Okay. What if they tied it more to AA4? I mean Phoenix’s disbarment and subsequent return could’ve actually affected the plot. Have people actively mistrust Phoenix or something. Or maybe have it affect anyone in any way. Sure it divides the fucking high schoolers for that mess of a “power of friendship” storyline, but so could a plot about, I don’t know, electing a homecoming queen or something. It affected Athena for one case, but what did that even teach her other than “Trust your gut, sweetie, don’t do lawyer crimes!” Phoenix didn’t have an arc in this game, and he shouldn’t have had to, unless it was coming to grips with the fact that he was never going to get those 7 years of his life back and the smears against his character were always going to linger. But they didn’t do that, they just needed him in there for brand recognition.
I can handle a lot of bullshit in these bullshit lawyer games. That’s part of the appeal. But unlike most of the other bullshit, this particular threat was unsatisfying, meandering, and unnecessary.

The Spectral Turnabout 2/?
Chapter 2! Last chapter was about Phoenix when he got introduced to the spectral world, this one is about Miles :D
oOo
Miles passed out in the elevator with a scream ringing through the air, one that will haunt his dreams, haunt his footsteps, haunt his every moment for the next fifteen years.
When he woke up, his world had been turned on its head.
When he’s a little older, Miles goes through the events over and over and over until the story makes sense, until he knows the events forwards and backwards. It goes like this:
Miles got into the elevator with his dad and Yanni Yogi. There was an earthquake. The elevator became stuck. The oxygen ran low. Yanni Yogi started attacking his dad. Miles threw the gun. A shot rang through the elevator, and the scream chased Miles in darkness as he passed out. And Miles goes crazy.
The days after The Event are a blur, are foggy, and they tell him it’s from the trauma mixed with the lack of oxygen. What Miles does know is that when he’s capable of forming memories again, he sees things that aren’t really there. Creatures, monsters that lurk in the corners, brightly colored mist coming off of them. An energy that Miles could see coming off of himself in muted purple waves.
They said Yanni Yogi’s lawyer had him plead insanity. Brain damage due to the lack of oxygen. There was a precedent for it.
Miles was an orphan for six months before Manfred von Karma adopted him. Miles’ used those six months to perfect ignoring what he could see. He didn’t want to think about how he’d be treated, how people would look at him, if they knew something had snapped in his head from The Event. Even more so once he was under Von Karma’s roof. Imperfection was not tolerated. So Miles would be perfect. He was perfect.
He was a perfect child, who most certainly didn’t see things that weren’t there.
oOo
Pess was the first spirit to ever speak to Miles.
It’d been an entire year since the accident. It wasn’t always easy to act completely normal. When the figments of his imagination actually come into contact with him, he felt phantom pressure, and a time or two they’d run into him with enough force to bowl him completely over. No, that was wrong, they didn’t run him over. Miles tripped or something, and for some reason his brain had decided to place a make-believe monster as the reason.
Pess had slipped into Miles bedroom in the evening, straight through the walls. She had landed on the floor, curling up into a tight little ball in the corner. Miles hadn’t thought much of her at first, aside from allowing himself to openly track her movement. He was in the safety of his room, he’d allow himself to look.
This one imaginary monster was shaped like a very curly-furred greyhound, if greyhounds had tails longer than their bodies, three pairs of legs, and wings instead of ears. The back two pairs were bird feet instead of paws, and there was another set of wings tightly closed onto the monster’s back. The colored mist coming off of her matched Miles’ own to a ‘T’, but something looked off about it.
Miles shot a look to his door, making sure it was still closed, and then for extra good measure he locked it and pulled the curtains shut over the window. Then, he got a little closer to the creature that wasn’t real, staring. The mist usually came off of things like steam off of warm water, but for this creature it was also coming from spots that closely resembled would. She had gouges in her sides and bite marks on her legs, long scratches down her snout.
The hallucination opened one of her eyes and then flinched back at how close he was. Miles responded in kind, head whipping around to check the door once more. He felt like he’s standing at the precipice of something dangerous here, of showing so much acknowledgement to something that isn’t really there, but his curiosity still has a hold on him.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t realize a spectral lived here, I-I’ll, um, I’ll…” The thing got to her feet, all six of them, and shook her coat.
“Wait…!” Miles whispered, and then slapped a hand over his mouth, going bright red and shame filling him. This was too much, talking to her was a step too far. But then, she actually stopped, and turned her big and warm brown eyes on him. “Wh… what did you call me?”
“A spectral? You are one, right? In fact, we match.” She said. Miles couldn’t deny that.
“I don’t know what that is.” He admitted, sitting back. Why would a hallucination use a word he doesn’t know?
“It means you can see us.” She explained.
“‘Us’?”
“Spirits.”
Miles looked at the door again and raised a hand to bite one of his nails before yanking the hand down.
“Come on,” He said and crawled underneath his bed and the hallucination - the spirit? - followed after him, “Tell me more about spirits.”
The spirit introduced herself as Pess, and she explained how spirits weren’t ghosts, really, but more like the conglomerations of leftover energy from dead things. Spectrals were people who were still alive but could see them. There were very few of them, to the point that Miles was the first one Pess had ever met.
It seemed like far too convenient an explanation. Oh, yes, Miles wasn’t crazy, he was just special, like a character out of a book his teacher’s used to read out loud to the class before he switched schools.
“I don’t believe you.” Miles told her right to her face. “Ghosts don’t exist.”
“Oh.” Pess rested her head on her front paws, looking over at him sadly. “Well, why can’t they?”
“If they did, then…” Miles trailed off. He opened his mouth and closed it, unable to form the words. He didn’t like thinking about The Incident, and definitely not talking about it. But… but if spirits were real, if ghosts were real, then why did Yanni Yogi get proven innocent? Why would Misty Fey claim to have channeled his dad, and his dad to have said it was Yanni Yogi.
No, Miles needed to remember to focus on what was real, what was physical, what he had evidence for.
Pess seemed to understand anyway. The wings on her head closed up tight and her tail swept over to rest on Miles’ hand. It felt soft and warm. No, it was the heater kicking on somewhere, a gust of warm air, and the broken part of his mind had decided to make the hallucination align with it just so.
“I need to go to bed.” Miles said out loud. He did not say it to Pess, because Pess wasn’t real.
“Okay,” Pess asid, and while Miles crawled out from under the bed, she simply phased right through it to sit on his bed and then settled on top of the blanket. She didn’t so much as rumble the comforter, because of course she didn’t. “Uh, Spectral, I don’t want to bother you, but…?”
Miles knew he should set himself straight again. He’d been working on ignoring what wasn’t there for a year now, he should be better than this. And yet, Miles found himself sighing and looking at her.
“But?”
“Spirits can heal on their own, but they heal faster around a spectral with a color that matches their own. C-could…? Could I stay here? Until I’m better?” She begged. She had the puppy-dog eyes down pat.
Miles cast another look to the door, clenching his hands into fists until his fingernails were embedded into his palms.
“Okay. Yeah, okay. Just until you’re better.”
oOo
Pess didn’t leave after she was healed up.
Sometime between that night and the time wounds had closed up, Miles had become used to her presence. One would think that having a figment of his imagination that he did acknowledge at time would make things worse, and that was what Miles had feared at first, but he’d found he didn’t deny the comfort of cuddling close to her at night, and she never complained if he ever hugged her too tight when he had nightmares. She followed him everywhere, at first so she might heal up quicker, but Miles found himself enjoying her constant presence at his side.
It certainly made him feel a little less lonely at school. He hadn’t had much luck yet making friends. Manfred von Karma insisted that Miles didn’t need to think about things like that. Miles nodded to that in perfect agreement.
Pess was very soft, very nice, and very excitable. She always seemed able to pick up on when Miles was starting to get anxious and would come over and rub her face against his hand. He couldn’t say anything to her, or look at her, or purposefully try to touch her. At least, not out in public. He only allowed himself to indulge in that sort of thing when he was sure nobody else could see him, and even then he only ever talked to her in low and quiet whispers both he and pess could barely hear, let alone anybody who might try to listen in.
He asked her, once, if she’d ever wanted to leave. She must’ve done something before being here, being with him. She’d stopped chasing a smaller ‘spirit’ around his room and looked over him, cocking her head, a doggish grin on her face.
“Why would I leave? I have you now.”
He wondered if she’d been alone before she’d met him. He didn’t ask. He felt he knew the answer.
He tried to convince himself over the years that he was passed needing her there for him. She was nothing more than an imaginary friend. He got older, he shouldn’t need it her, he shouldn’t like having her there. A couple times he’d even managed to find somewhere far and secluded and yell at her to go away, to leave, to let him finally be closer to perfect.
Both times, Pess did leave, tail between her legs.
Both times, it hadn’t sat well with Miles and he’d gone out late at night searching the city and calling her name until he found her.
The older he got, the more he realized he didn’t ‘leak’ spectral energy constantly. It surged particularly when he had intense emotions. He seeked that out, stifling his emotions, burying them so he came off self-assured. He asked if there was a big reason for the energy, telling himself he was just curious of what his mind would come up with to explain it, and pess told him she wasn’t really sure. She knew spirits were made of it, and she’d heard rumors of spectrals being able to do something about that, but again, he was the first spectral she’d ever met.
The habit of her accompanying him to court came about naturally. Where he went, Pess went, and where did he need her more than during a case?
Miles found a balance of almost-nearly perfect that he told himself was Perfection.
It had to do.

Sociopath Profile: Manfred von Karma
Tumblr media
Japanese name: Gou Karuma From the 2001 visual novel Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the 2009 visual novel Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, the 2011 visual novel Gyakuten Kenji 2, the anime series Ace Attorney (2016-2019), and the 2012 live-action film Gyaakuten Saiben Voiced in the anime by Akio Ōtsuka (JP) and Bill Jenkins (EN) Played by Ryo Ishibashi
von Karma is one terrible mix of sociopath and narcissist. He’s one of the most prolific and feared prosecutors in Japan and he is willing to keep up his 40-year winning streak at any cost. All to keep his reputation as a lawyer.
[SPOILERS BELOW]
As a narcissist, he obviously has an over-inflated ego. He doesn’t ever give anyone the time of day and always treats people abrasively, trying to prove that he is better than them. He is desperate to be seen as the perfect prosecutor and anyone who tarnishes that perfect record is worthy of swift retribution. Gregory Edgeworth has had the worst for being responsible for his only penalty in his career. His response? Murder Gregory, take his now orphaned son under his wing, abuse his son to become an amoral attorney like Karma himself, and then frame Miles for murder!
This is one of his biggest problems. He doesn’t know when to let things go. He got away from the murder and he could have stopped there. However, he took it a step further by taking Miles in. And to complete his revenge (over something most people would have let go of by now), he framed Miles for murder. He was really testing his luck for someone who plans so meticulously.
And as a lawyer, Karma is obviously a master manipulator. He does this by reading up about the case long beforehand and working out every single possibility for what could go down in court. Witness testimonies, admitted evidence, even the other lawyer’s behaviors in court. Also, to maintain his perfect win record, as a prosecutor, he must find criminals guilty. This means that he will falsify evidence to make sure that the suspects in his cases are convicted no matter what. He also manipulates Miles into being an amoral lawyer simply to become the opposite of what his father stood for. And to cram Miles, he used Yogi as a prop for his revenge and Hammond since he was the prosecutor who found him innocent.
In the anime and film, he is more superficially charming since he actually appears to be a fatherly figure to his proteges. It proves he can put up a front of being nice when it suits him. However, he prefers efficiency so pleasantries are something he doesn’t take any time for. Even in the games, he does try to be polite about not remembering Phoenix and Maya since he never really remembers defense attorneys. (Even though the reason isn’t as polite.)
The lack of empathy for anyone else is openly apparent. Notably, he doesn’t care if innocent people are locked up as long as he can keep his perfect record. Of course, there’s the fact that he’s willing to murder someone over a petty slight. And the fact that he lets innocent people be found guilty simply for the sake of his record. And he notably let Hammond be murdered in his revenge plot against Edgeworth.  He appears to have some love for his daughter Franziska, but no matter how genuine it is, she isn’t as important to him as his perfect record. His dismissive attitude towards defense lawyers also shows how little he cares about anything other than his perfect record.
“[Defense Attorneys] are like bugs to me. Needless things to be crushed.”
He is a man who will do anything to achieve perfection, and any slight against this will cause a scorched-earth response to do it. Likely, if he wasn’t arrested after being found guilty of the DL-6 incident and setting up the murder of Hammond, who knows how much Hell he would have raised when Phoenix broke his 40-year winning streak.

Why Miles Edgeworth is my Favorite Rival Character
I consider Miles Edgeworth my favorite rival character I’ve seen thus far. Not to say there aren’t better rival characters in media or anime, but I’d say that he certainly stands out among them and perhaps would be considered a top 5 favorite. Though, what makes him stand out as a rival is something that I feel is a huge improvement from the usual rival character trope. To explain this, I will contrast what makes a rival character different from an enemy.
The biggest mistake done, in most animes especially, is making the rival character the enemy or villain. The only thing that rivals should have in common with enemies or villains are that their beliefs or opinions oppose the ones the protagonist or the character the rival opposes. It’s common knowledge that a rival will believe strongly in something that the protagonist strongly opposes. In Yu-Gi-Oh, the rival Seto Kaiba strongly believes that strength will achieve victory, while Yugi/Yami believes that a combination of skills their friends share will achieve victory. In Danganronpa, Byakuya Togami believes that everyone should play the killing game with the rules Monokuma set out as a means of survival, whereas Makoto Naegi believes that no one should participate or kill each other at all. In Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta believes in fighting in order to achieve victory, whereas Goku believes in fighting for fun and to protect his loved ones. These rivals have strongly opposing beliefs, much like enemies and villains, except that these views do not make these rivals horrible people. Many times, rivals can be a strong and reliable ally, because of their opposing views, unlike with enemies whose views are meant for nothing more than to create chaos and destruction.
The biggest problem I have with rival characters in general is that they’re often placed as jerks or bullies. I’ve found that rivals are more often vilified than they should. They’re often considered arrogant, selfish, smug and unlikable people. Byakuya Togami comes out as the kind of person that doesn’t care for the life of others or framing someone for murder for just simply annoying him. The other rivals in the Danganronpa sequels follow this trend of being unlikable, but I’ll give Spike Chunsoft credit for making them more original than the rival architype – even though one is a sociopath and the other seems to have some sort of Antisocial Disorder. Seto Kaiba also comes out as an unlikable person and is much more unlikable in the manga, if you can believe it. This guy traumatizes his brother in the manga to the point he’d make Manfred Von Karma look sane by comparison and I wish I was exaggerating. Don’t get me wrong, I love Seto Kaiba, but I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t the most unlikable person in existence. He also was a villain at first, which goes with the rival architype. Even though he did change throughout the manga and anime, the amount of cares he has for other people’s lives and taking responsibility for his actions that caused so many people harm is enough to make any politician blush. Don’t get me started on Vegeta, but at least he was willing to take responsibility for his actions in the Majin Buu Arc. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about Vegeta after that Arch or have watched Dragon Ball Super, but anything in Dragon Ball Z, you can already guess on your own.
What makes Miles Edgeworth stand out is that, despite his opposing views, he’s not a horrible or unlikable person. Now, he was setup to be unlikable during Turnabout Sisters, but then afterwards, he starts showing himself to being a very good, selfless and likable person. Miles Edgeworth is the kind of person that will give you the coat off his back, help an elderly lady cross the street or sit by you at the lunch table when there’s no one sitting with you. Even though Miles Edgeworth is dressed and can act smug at times, he constantly cares about other people’s feelings. He’d be willing to take the blame for something someone else did, because he will find some reason to feel responsible for something he didn’t do. Miles Edgeworth is the kind of person you’d want as your best friend.
Miles Edgeworth’s views still oppose to Phoenix Wright, the main character, because he believes that trust should be earned and logic will always find the truth. Phoenix Wright, on the other hand, believes that trust shouldn’t have to be earned, but accepted until evidence proves their guilt, and magic can be another way of finding the truth. These are very opposing views, but they do not make either Phoenix or Miles horrible or unlikable people. They’re human and humans will always hold opposing views that clash. Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth consider themselves friends and rivals because, while they hold strongly opposing views, they are also willing to talk or debate those views without thinking negatively about each other. Despite how much they oppose each other, they continually admire each other, because no matter how strongly they oppose each other, they still share the same goal in wanting to find the truth and deliver justice to the culprit.
It isn’t just Miles Edgeworth, the other rivals in the Ace Attorney games are also genuinely kind people that simply have opposing views or beliefs. Ironically, the characters that are considered unlikable or horrible people in Ace Attorney are the ones that are villains and those villains are the ones that try to force their own views into the judicial system or country. It’s like Ace Attorney is saying “your opposing views are not what make you horrible, but your actions from your viewpoints.” Even as the protagonist, you are never given any special treatment. If your friend betrayed and hurt you, it does not justify your actions in painting every prosecutor with a broad brush and the moment you present falsified evidence, even if you didn’t know it was false evidence, you will be the one to be judged the same way you judge everyone else. The only actions that cross the line to villainy is murder and betrayal. They’re actions that anyone with common sense will tell you and everyone universally will agree is wrong. Even actions such as breaking the law or falsifying evidence are questioned if those actions make someone a bad person. Are people like Lana Skye, the Yatagaratsu, Ron DeLite or Godot considered bad people, because one falsified evidence, two are thieves and the last killed someone?
It might seem I’m going on a rabbit trail, but the main point of this is that someone like Miles Edgeworth stands out as a rival, because he teaches us something that is hardly ever tackled in other media. Having an opposing opinion or belief does not make you a bad person. Miles Edgeworth holds strong opposing views that people these days would consider to be hateful and therefore a bad person, but he isn’t. He’s one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet and that’s a fact too many people find hard to swallow. Miles Edgeworth may be the kind of person that can’t trust everyone and wouldn’t be afraid to expose someone’s childhood trauma, but he is also the kind of person to take responsibility for his own actions. He doesn’t allow his trauma to justify his corrupt decisions he’s lived by for the past 15 years and five years of his career. The fact his PTSD is never brought up farther proves that Miles Edgeworth is not the kind of person to play victim or allow it to justify the number of innocents he’s placed behind bars or led to be executed. Not even being brainwashed under his corrupt mentor that murdered his father is ever used to justify his actions.
Miles Edgeworth teaches us how to be responsible individuals. If you’ve done something wrong, take responsibility and never use your tragedy or disability as an excuse. Apologizing is a good start, but you should strive to become a better person than you  once were. Never label someone as a bad person for having a different opinion than you. That person may become your best friend you strive to become one day. If there is someone that is treating you horribly, be an example of what they should be. Fight anger with love. If there is someone in trouble or danger, protect them, but never stoop to the same level as your adversary. If someone brings up something horrible you did in the past, never allow that to define you. Only you can decide what you will do in your life and people watch you, so make sure every action you make and words you say reflect the person you strive to be.
So many rival characters are very beloved by a majority of the fandom, but only a few are the kind of people everyone should strive to be. I consider Miles Edgeworth a rival that everyone should strive to be. The fact he is a beloved character in the Ace Attorney fandom makes me happy, because he is a character everyone should strive to be. I can’t say the same for Seto Kaiba, Byakuya Togami and especially Vegeta. All of them are horrible people that do horrible things and are treated as such. Having a rival that isn’t a horrible person, even treated as such, is a breath of fresh air. Now, I do consider Green, not Gary, from Pokémon another rival that only has opposing views and isn’t a horrible person, but most people often look to Gary when they think of Green and the mangas aren’t as popular as the anime. I’d like to see more rivals that aren’t horrible people with that “I am greater than thou” attitude.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about Seto Kaiba, Byakuya Togami or Vegeta. I do like their characters, but I also know they’re written as horrible people nobody likes. Vegeta was written as an alien that tried to destroy Earth and is now forced to live in it, because his planet was destroyed. Seto Kaiba isn’t written to be a good person either, unless being obsessed with revenge and taking it out on the protagonist, who had nothing to do with it, is considered a likable trait. Now, Byakuya Togami does strive to become a better person later on, but that’s mostly because he’s trying to survive an apocalyptic world and he often changes his strategy depending on the situation. If there’s one person that wants to kill everyone, he will trust no one but himself. If he sees that no one wants to murder anyone, he will lead them to victory. Unlike Seto Kaiba and Vegeta, Byakuya Togami was written to be a likable or unlikable person depending on where you stand with him. Spike Chunsoft did a really good job with his character and I like how, if you were to spend all your friendship links with him, you can go from being his antagonistic rival to being the best man he’ll hire as his secretary as a way to rebuild his company. So, don’t mistaken me using them as examples of the rival architype as my way of trashing their characters, because they are some of the best written characters and I consider Vegeta and Seto Kaiba legendary.
The point of this is to demonstrate what makes Miles Edgeworth one of the best rival characters. As characters, the rival architypes can be used very cleverly, but my issue is that they’re considered rivals that are vilified. In real life, not every person you fight or debate with are your enemies. Most of the time, your enemies are the kinds of people you don’t want to or should fight with. They’re the kinds you want to avoid approaching or else someone will get hurt. Rivals are those you want to fight with in order to become a stronger or better person. Byakuya Togami is debatable, but I’d never want Seto Kaiba or Vegeta to be my rivals or someone I’d want to fight with in a million years. They’d just make me a bitter person, because all they want to do is win against the one person they can’t defeat and seem to become better people once the person they are obsessed in defeating dies. I’m not kidding either. Vegeta and Seto Kaiba literally start becoming better and more responsible people once Goku and Yami bite the dust. How is someone a good rival when they only get better and stronger once their opponent dies exactly?
The idea of a rival is for them to be an opposition to the protagonist that makes the both of them better and stronger people. Miles Edgeworth and Phoenix Wright help each other become better and stronger people through their oppositions. They only become weaker once they are apart from each other. This is the kind of relationship rivals should be. They’re the kind of people that will drag you out of bed after being beaten by a gang of thugs just so you both can beat them up together or send you to hell and back for giving up. That’s the kind of relationship Phoenix and Miles have. They’re not afraid to bite each other or show tough love when needed. They’re not the kind of people that bring toxicity and no one should ever consider anybody that’s obsessed with fighting or defeating them as rivals. Those people are toxic and should never be associated with. Luckily, Yu-Gi-Oh does create nontoxic rivals (like Jack Atlas, who isn’t toxic, tries to become a better person, helps Yusei become a better person and is actually a good person and not a selfish ass) and Vegeta does get his act together after the Majin Buu Arc, though I don’t know about Dragon Ball GT or Super. As for Byakuya Togami, he goes from being a rival to being Makoto’s boss and Makoto being Togami’s doormat, so I consider that an improvement overall.
You don’t have to agree with these, but I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Unpopular Opinion Re: Ace Attorney
Matt Engarde is the worst (as in “most thoroughly, disgustingly awful on a personal level”) villain in the original Phoenix Wright trilogy.
From an objective standpoint, Dahlia Hawthorne is far more heinous, this is true. She had the higher victim count and intended victim count, was more hateful and malevolent, and had a more personal conflict with the good guys. And in terms of horribly screwing up someone’s life, even Manfred von Karma has Engarde beat as well. TV Tropes has both von Karma and Hawthorne on the Complete Monster trope, but won’t extend that to Engarde for some reason. Probably ‘cause he, through a proxy, killed only one person (even von Karma was willing to at least threaten murder to others despite Gregory Edgeworth being his only actual murder victim, and he’s technically behind the death of Robert Hammond too despite not pulling the trigger, which itself only further ruined Yanni Yogi’s life.)
So how come I say Engarde is the Worst(TM)?
Well, the thing is, when you put him in the middle of von Karma and Hawthorne, you kind of notice something about Engarde that’s more unsettling and sinister than the other two. Karma was every bit the campy, theatrical, larger than life prosecutor antagonist as any other such prosecutor in the series - he just so happened to be completely and utterly evil. And even Hawthorne, for all of her horribleness, still has that over-the-top factor going on in how her sweet, demure, angelic Good Girl cover image and her true demonic, scheming, hate-filled, sociopathic Devil Spawn character both are at the highest, most Extra extremes as is possible for them to be. But Engarde? Literally the only thing about him that’s over-the-top is the big reveal of his true nature, where he shows his scarred eye, makes himself look as outwardly evil as he can, and pulls a glass of Chianti out from total nothing while in a prison cell. That’s your typical Ace Attorney camp factor at work...but then after that passes and you get to know the guy’s true character? There’s nothing else there that’s got that melodramatic pulp fiction charm. He’s just straight-up an evil douchebag. The kind of douchebag you feel actually COULD be encountered out there in real life. The kind who do commit crimes they feel confident they can get away with, or worse, have gotten away with, even when tried in a court of law. Factoring in that he’s a popular actor, a celebrity for literally playing the good guy, makes this all the more disturbing given the Cult of Celebrity in real life and how it’s used to hide some truly awful people’s truly despicable deeds. Because of this, when you have to watch him act like a comfortably smug, smarmy prick while putting his defense attorney and his opposition on the spot, working a scheme to get himself acquitted for a crime he totally did commit and in the process ruin the lives of people far less deserving of any form of punishment and hardship than the likes of him, there is just a far more visceral hatred and disgust for the character than I think any other culprit in the series could ever match. This bastard played a big part in driving Celeste Inpax to suicide and orchestrated the murder of Juan Corrida, and in doing so, made victims out of Adrian Andrews, Maya Fey, Pearl Fey, Dick Gumshoe, Franziska von Karma, Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix Wright, and in a twisted way, even Shelly de Killer...all as he was completely callous and flippant about the whole thing, laughing with sadistic glee at all the ways he got everyone dancing to his tune, treating people like toys he could play around with only to ultimately break and dispose of however it suited him, and having the utmost confidence that he was going to come out smelling like a rose, get away with all of his evildoing, and be a free man...free to step on more people and ruin more lives just because he’s able to.
Most Ace Attorney villains are larger than life, yet the most major villains such as Manfred von Karma, Matt Engarde, and Dahlia Hawthorne are all too lifelike in their villainy. But due to the factor of Engarde’s celebrity status and his lack of theatricality or exaggeration beyond his true self’s initial reveal, he gets under my skin even more than von Karma or Hawthorne could. And that’s why out of all the breakdowns and final defeats for the games’ villains, his is the one that brought me the most pure, unrestrained, delighted catharsis.

yo! how would you rank the ace attorney defence attorneys and prosecutors from best to worse?
like… in terms of how good they are at their jobs? that’s what I hope you meant-
Defence Attorneys
Raymond Shields (of course. but for real. he’s good. he became a lawyer at just 19 back when that was unusual. he’s really really smart, even if he doesn’t see it, himself.)
Gregory Edgeworth (this man’s dedication to the truth was unreal.)
Phoenix Wright (I’m ignoring AA5/AA6 here. he is brilliant in the courtroom, like for real. he doesn’t give up. he took a system that was pretty much in tatters and started piecing it back together. he finds contradictions no one else would think of. he asks for help when he needs it. he’s wonderful.)
Apollo Justice (given the state of the law in AA4, he’s fighting a losing battle with corruption, but he’s still fighting and that’s what matters.)
Mia Fey (I really really really wish we’d got to see more of late career Mia. she seems like a brilliant investigator)
Dhurke Sahdmadhi (god fuck I love his hair and I love how he loves his wife and also Datz. he’s a very very good rebel leader and I expect he was a decent lawyer. fought against a mad corrupt system and you know what I really respect that. I wanna be like him)
Athena Cykes (I love her as a character but I don’t like her game. she’s better than everyone thinks she is, but she’s still Very Very New To This and it’s a shame we never get to see her actually flourish)
Jill Crane (going behind Blaise’s back like that took some serious balls. and she must’ve had a remarkably strong character. and I think she’s pretty. I nearly put her at 4.)
Diego Armando (he reminds me of our sister department’s manager in that he’s decently competent but thinks he’s way better than he actually is)
Kristoph Gavin (I think he’s probably a really, really good lawyer in terms of, like, defending super rich people and getting them off charges for things they definitely did.)
Marvin Grossberg (I think he’s an interesting character but it’s whatever. idk I find stories about corruption really interesting for some reason. he’s just a tired old man who’s weighed down by guilt, which I think is an interesting character but doesn’t have much bearing on his skill)
Aristotle Means (he gets wins WHATEVER but I don’t like DD and I don’t like him. Capcom waved him in our face like “haha look! look how corrupt the legal system is! haha look this is worldbuilding!” and then gave a bullshit plot. he’s symbolic of by beef with the Dark Age arc. fuck this dude. at least his design is somewhat interesting)
Robert Hammond (I hate this dude so much and Yanni Yogi did god’s work. corrupt, uncharismatic, self-centred Severus Snape looking bitch)
Prosecutors
Klavier Gavin (Klavier is very very good at his job. Klavier wants to help the truth be found and that’s pretty much his main motivation. he wanted to help us overcome the corruption that was tainting the law, until corruption overcame Capcom and he was shelved indefinitely)
Miles Edgeworth (he was off to a shaky start, but he got good. his logical way of thinking has served him well, he’s very skilled and he can think in ways that not everyone seems to be able to. good at dealing in international affairs, too.)
Franziska von Karma (comes into her own in the Investigations games. she was born to be an international prosecutor. she uses her authority and general kinda scary personality for the best possible uses in those games. she cares about people close to her, but can keep up her strong front, and that’s actually way cool)
Neil Marshall (cared about justice and was good enough to get the King of Prosecutors trophy, which probably says more about his skill than the games ever will. chased after a criminal himself. brave dude.)
Byrne Faraday (cared enough about finding the truth to become the Yatagarasu. that’s something, alright. worked nicely with his detective partner which is a refreshing change in this series sometimes)
Simon Blackquill (made DD bearable but idk if he’s as good at prosecuting as he is good at scaring the shit out of people with his eagle. was willing to protect Athena though and you know what? that’s awesome)
Sebastian Debeste (look! he has the potential to be very good! but the majority of AAI2 didn’t really shine him in a super good light. I believe in him. and he saved our asses at the end of the game)
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi (I Don’t like how he treated Athena and nothing about his prosecuting skills stood out to me at all. also he was trying to get Phoenix murdered, the fucker. however he wasn’t as outwardly cruel as some of the fuckers on this thing so he can stay at number 8)
Lana Skye (this PAINS me but we never see her prosecute. I adore Lana as a character but she was probably way better as a detective, since that’s the career she chose. I’m just putting her above Blaise because she deserves better but we know Nothing about her skill like at all)
Winston Payne (has shit taste in suits. I can admire that. but he couldn’t kill a rookie if the rookie handed him a loaded gun, both physically AND metaphorically)
Blaise Debeste (UGH look if he made Chief Prosecutor he must’ve been solidly alright I guess? ugh. he was a brilliant villain, anyway)
Jacques Portsman (I almost forgot this dude)
Gaspen Payne (I’m like vaguely aware that he exists. fuck him. shit at his job and tried to get Phoenix killed)
Manfred von Karma (is legitimately the least skilled prosecutor in AA. sure, he won, but only through intimidation. his arguments needed very little prodding to fall apart, and prod we did. completely unprepared for any sort of surprise - couldn’t work with Larry’s sudden testimony at all. no adaptability whatsoever. it’s almost funny if he wasn’t so genuinely evil)
if I missed anyone, I’m sorry!

After going the Ace Attorney games again, here are my rankings of the six main series prosecutors:
(Side note: Still haven’t played any of the Investigations games or the Great Ace Attorney series)
6) Nahyuta Sahdmadhi
Poor Nahyuta. I hate to place him in the last place slot but after going through Spirit of Justice again, he still hasn’t grown on me. Let me just say, I don’t really like Spirit of Justice. There are a lot of aspects of that game I was not fond of, such as the final case being a repeat of Farewell, My Turnabout and the underwhelming Khura’in Civil War storyline. However, in Nahyuta’s defense, I don’t hate the character.
Nahyuta has a decent storyline and he has a unique gimmick. It’s just when compared to the other 5 prosecutors, he doesn’t really do anything for me. His storyline with Apollo feels like a rehash of the previous games (oh, the prosecutor was close friends with the defense attorney? Hmm, where have I heard that before *coughPhoenixandMilescough* *coughAthenaandSimoncough*). Also, he’s not as fun or as interesting as his counterparts.
Basically, I don’t think Nahyuta’s a bad character, he’s just my least favorite of the prosecutors.
5) Franziska von Karma
This one hurt me, mainly because I love Franziska. She seems like a fun character outside of the main Ace Attorney games based on her appearances in the Investigations series. However, if we’re going purely with her role as prosecutor in the main series, then I have to place her in the 5th place slot. But it’s not because I think she’s a bad character. She’s great! She’s a fun character to interact with and she has an interesting backstory. The problem is Justice for All.
In my opinion, Justice for All is the worst Ace Attorney game in the main series. It’s to the point that it affected my placement of Franziska on this list. First off, it’s already bad that one of the main cases she’s the prosecutor in is Turnabout Big Top aka the worst case in the entire franchise. But then there’s Farewell, My Turnabout, which absolutely screws over her character by making Miles Edgeworth the focus of the finale.
Now let me back up. Before you Miles Edgeworth fans jump down my throat, I am aware that Miles is not the prosecutor for the final case in the first game. I am NOT saying that Franziska needed to be the prosecutor in Farewell, My Turnabout. I am NOT saying Miles ruined the story. The point I’m making is that even though Miles wasn’t the prosecutor in Turnabout Goodbyes, he was still the main focus. Everything in that episode revolved around Miles’ past and his relationship with Manfred von Karma. He still got a complete character arc even though he wasn’t the rival.
In Farewell, My Turnabout, Capcom just went and said, “Go fuck yourself Franziska” and made everything about Miles again. Franziska was barely a presence in that final episode and by the time the game ended, her arc felt incomplete. Yes, the writers attempted to make her relevant to the story by having her be the one to deliver the evidence but just think about that for a second. She’s the main prosecutor of the 2nd game and the most significant thing she did in the finale was deliver items. I honestly feel her appearance in Trials and Tribulations was damage control for how shit she was treated in Justice for All.
Thankfully, it looks like the Investigations games treated Franziska better. But as for the main series, she deserved a whole lot better. I’d love to place her higher but with the storyline she got, I have to mark her down.
4) Klavier Gavin
I don’t have much to say about Klavier. I think he’s a cool character and he has a kickass gimmick. However, he’s just a mid-tier kind of character for me. Like with Franziska, it’s mainly to do with Apollo Justice / Ace Attorney 4.
People have already pointed this out but the storyline in Apollo Justice feels more like set-up for something bigger. When I first went through Apollo Justice, it felt like there was going to be more to Kristoph Gavin, more to Klavier Gavin. Phoenix Wright was at the start of a different kind of character arc and the Gramaryes/Trucy Wright would be the main focus of the Apollo Justice trilogy, just like how Maya and the Feys were the focus of Phoenix’s trilogy.
In fact, just going off on a little tangent, I already made a post about this but I was thinking that the abandoned Apollo Justice trilogy would lead to Phoenix becoming a Godot-type character. He had the seeds of that character arc planted, with his darker behavior, willingness to bend the legal system to get what he wants (using forged evidence and trapping Kristoph with the jurist system) and a similar reason to become an anti-villain (Godot was poisoned by Dahlia, Phoenix was disbarred thanks to Kristoph). He would then show up in the final game as the main rival, leading to a Phoenix and Apollo showdown.
Sorry, this was supposed to be about Klavier. The point I’m trying to make is, Klavier is a cool character but he feels wasted. Since the 5th and 6th games didn’t follow-up on the 4th game’s story, it feels like Klavier was left behind as a result. That’s why he’s low on the list.
3) Simon Blackquill
Ah yes, the twisted samurai. For the record, Dual Destinies is my favorite Apollo Justice-era game, so it’s not a huge surprise that Simon is my favorite Apollo Justice-era prosecutor. For me, what makes Simon stand out is that he’s the most “complete” of the three AJ-era prosecutors.
My issue with Klav was that his storyline feels incomplete while my issue with Yuty was that he wasn’t that interesting of a character. Simon doesn’t have those problems. For one, he has the best gimmick between the three of them. It’s an interesting concept to have a prosecutor be an actual death row inmate. What’s cool about that is that the death row inmate gimmick worked for Simon’s character arc.
Dual Destinies set Simon up as the embodiment of the dark age of the law. He was a death row inmate who constantly talked about killing his foes. That’s why the reveal that he’s actually an honorable man who never killed anyone works so well, it’s a strong contrast to how he’s set up. Also, it’s a twist that works with Simon’s character as he’s supposed to be a psychology expert. He plays up his image of a crazy killer to intimidate his enemies.
Other than that, I also feel like Simon had the best storyline of the AJ-era prosecutors. Also, even though his appearance in Spirit of Justice was a bit silly, it was still fun to see this character in a more lighter tone.
2) Miles Edgeworth
Yeah, of course Edgey is this high up on the list. Like I wrote, I can’t count the Investigations games as I haven’t played them but even then, Miles had a pretty good run in the main series. He had a strong character arc in the first game, a decent return in the 2nd game, and a strong return in the 3rd game. It was great that you actually got to play as Miles in T&T and that he was the acting defense attorney. For me, Trials and Tribulations felt like the end of Miles’ character arc as he finally became a defense attorney, just like his dad.
And honestly, Capcom should’ve left him at that. I’m not saying this is why he’s only 2nd on the list but I just want to say, I don’t think he needed to be in Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. Yes, I am aware that Miles’ appearances in those games were just fun guest appearances for people who want that AA original trilogy nostalgia. However, I felt that his appearances in 5 and 6 slightly ruined his character arc.
Why? Because he was back to being a prosecutor. Last time I checked, wasn’t his entire character arc about him becoming a defense attorney? He wanted to be a DA like his dad, he developed a misguided hatred of defense attorneys due to the DL-6 Incident, he was misled into believing that the number one goal of an attorney is to win court cases by Manfred von Karma, he was rescued by his friend Phoenix which led to him reassessing his life goals, he goes on a trip around the world to find himself, and then in the final game, he becomes Iris’ defense attorney, overcoming his initial hatred of DAs and fulfilling his childhood goal.
Maybe it’s just me but having Miles come back as a prosecutor in the AJ-era games feels like a step back in character development. But once again, that’s not the reason why he’s 2nd on the list. I like Miles, but I like the next guy even more. It should be obvious who it is by now.
1) Godot
Yes, I know, this is potentially a controversial choice. I just wanna say, I don’t care if you love, like, dislike, or hate Godot. Let me write the reasons why Godot is my number one prosecutor.
When I was writing this list out, I was measuring the prosecutors based on several factors. Story, character arc, design, strength as a rival, humor and so on. Just to be clear, I don’t think Godot is the best of all those categories. For example, when it comes to strength as a rival, I’d say Miles and Franziska were stronger opponents. Godot is definitely a mid-tier rival, which makes sense as he’s supposed to be a rookie / defense attorney out of his league.
So, why Godot then if he’s not the best in every category? Honestly...I’d say it’s the character overall. Regardless of your feelings towards the character, I feel that we can all agree that Godot’s story is the most tragic.
Let’s recap; Godot’s story is of a good man who was destroyed by a wicked monster. He was then abandoned by the people around him and lost the love of his life. With no one to help him, he let his grief consume him to the point that he became a bitter shell of his former self, obsessed with shaming the people he feels are responsible for the death of his lover. It’s only at the end when he realizes that all of his hatred and anger was just him projecting his own self-hatred onto someone else. That even though it wasn’t his fault, he still holds himself responsible for his lover’s death. However, it’s too late to make amends as he’s damned himself. In a moment of blind rage, he doomed himself by committing murder.
That is some HEAVY material for a game series that features the main character cross examining a parrot and conveniently developing amnesia just to set up a tutorial sequence.
Going on another tangent, you know who Godot’s storyline reminded me of? Jax Teller from Sons of Anarchy. Both characters started out as honorable men who were deeply in love. Then, tragedy struck. They lost the love of their lives and, in their final character arc, they took their rage out on everyone. Sons of Anarchy season 7 is still some of the most devastating TV I’ve ever watched and part of the reason was because of how sad it was to watch Jax fall. He fell so deep into his rage and anger that by the time he got his revenge, he burned so many bridges that the only place his character could go was death.
Same with Godot. He’s a damn Shakespearean tragic protagonist in that he was ultimately undone by his own rage and anger. You can sympathize with him based on how he came to be but at the same time, he destroyed himself. It’s a devastating character arc and, as someone who loves Shakespeare and all things theater, I absolutely loved it. It’s the one character arc that has stuck with me after going through all six games over again, even more so than Miles and Simon’s arcs.
In addition to all of this, the fact that Godot’s character arc tied the entire trilogy together is definitely worth noting. From his storyline, the game tied together Mia Fey’s death, highlighted Mia’s importance to the main storyline, and even set up Trials and Tribulations’ main villain, Dahlia Hawthorne. I love it when stories do that, when the character arcs actually work hand-in-hand with the story that the writer is trying to tell.
On some smaller notes, Godot definitely has the best character design in my opinion. Also, the best character theme (I still have the Fragrance of Dark Coffee playing in my head). Lastly, he has the best case in the original trilogy (Bridge to the Turnabout), as well as the best moment (the original pursuit theme plays when you expose the knife wound underneath his mask).
So yeah. In my opinion, Godot is the best Ace Attorney prosecutor. Those are my reasons, feel free to disagree if you want.

I just found a whole notepad document full of notes I was making while replaying Apollo Justice and this stuck out to me:
“I'm starting to see some weird truth behind Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Usually, at the end of an Ace Attorney case, the whole thing works itself out, and everybody is happy with the verdict.
But going back through this game...that's not the case at all.
For example: In Justice for All, the second game, the first case ends with Phoenix recovering from amnesia, the second ends with Pearl living with Maya instead of her heartless mother, the third ends with a marriage (regardless of the actual poltics of how genuinely awful it is), the fourth ends with Matt Engarde getting outed for doing all the terrible things he did, Franziska shows up with the last piece of evidence, and Edgeworth and Phoenix get him a guilty verdict together.
All those cases end happily, because that game is a normal Ace Attorney game.
But in this one....
Case 1 ends with Apollo's mentor going to prison.
Case 2 ends with Eldoon still working a job he hates at a noodle stand when his passion was to be a doctor. The person who performed Wocky's surgery is already dead, so he doesn't get his comeuppance. That means Wocky's father has to search the globe to try and find someone who could possibly perform his surgery, and in the end, we never find out if he survived or not.
Case 3 ends with Machi getting arrested for a different crime, smuggling in a cure for the Chief Justice's son, a cure that was destroyed during a concert...Sure, Daryan gets locked up, but he was able to completely slip under the radar up until that point, even going so far as to try to kill Lamiroir after he successfully killed her manager, all the while, Lamiroir had no idea because she was blind.
And Case 4 ends with the legal system still in its tragic state, Vera is still recovering from having been poisioned, and she's now alone in the world without her father, Trucy's own father is dead, her uncle turns himself in for a crime he didn't commit, and Phoenix is still out of the job. Trucy and Apollo never find out that they're brother and sister.
All these cases have incredibly unhappy endings. They're framed in such a bitter-sweet way, too.
And now I get it.
It's all a commentary....on the past games. Not that we can't have unhappy endings, but that the reason these endings are unhappy is that this legal system they use doesn't work.
It's Phoenix's whole reason for doing what he does and Kristoph's only advantage that, without the jury at the end, the system would have let him go without arrest. These people in power can do things right under the noses of everybody else...that's a theme that's been explored in the games before.
But unlike all those other times, when those people were brought to their knees, and they suffered, and they felt the weight of their crimes....
Most of them get a much lighter sentence than they could ever deserve.
What's worse, the victims are also treated like - no, scratch that. They ARE criminals.
Phoenix got his badge taken away for forging evidence. Wocky is a gangster. Machi is a smuggler. Vera is a forger.
All of these people are criminals. The only one who goes unpunished is Vera because she was too young to understand what she was doing.
Even the 15-year-old kid gets arrested.
Apollo Justice isn't just harsh on Apollo. It's harsh on everyone who's ever been victimized.
Its message isn't about succession. It's about how people in power can become corrupted and use that for their own advantage.... Yet, even in the case of Damon Gant, Matt Engarde and Manfred von Karma, they got their punishment. It was well-deserved. Lana was even okay with being taken to prison and stripped of her title if it meant Damon was brought to justice.
But that case...Rise from the Ashes, the one where Gant and Lana come from, that was made as a DLC made after Apollo Justice, meant to help tie in the events of the first trilogy into that game. And it ends on a sour note, too. Ema has lost her sister to the justice system. Phoenix is lonely without Maya. And Edgeworth decides to leave overseas....
In a sense...Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is a weird commentary on this whole power dynamic thing....nobody gets what they want in the end. The Gavinners break up, Phoenix still isn't an attorney, Trucy has the world on her shoulders, Ema is still at the shitty job she hates, it's never really said if Wocky recovers, half the cast is in prison....
But it's all spun to be something happy. Apollo, at the very end of it all, mentions ‘hope.’
....I guess that's kind of poetic.”
