au in which andrew is a linguistics major, and neil who is a math major and is completely whipped for andrew, tries to impress him and fails miserably:
andrew walks around neil’s dorm room, surveying the shelves of books lined up perfectly by edition.
“you have two copies of peter pan.” andrew says, sliding one off the shelf.
neil clears his throat. “yeah one of them is english and the other is french.”
“french”
neil nods. “yeah i learned it from my mother. i’m quite a fan of french literature.”
“i wasn’t aware peter pan was considered french literature.”
“oh, sure. with a name like peter?”
“peter is a greek name.”
neil grins. “so is andrew.”
“why french literature then?” andrew continues, unimpressed.
“i don’t know. it’s less pretentious,” he shrugs.
andrew picks up a book from the top of a stack on the nightstand, “and…anna karenina isn’t pretentious?”
“well that depends who’s reading it and why. if i told you i read it to help me fall asleep you wouldn’t call me pretentious would you.”
“do you?”
“do i what.”
“read anna karenina to help you fall asleep.”
“oh god no, that’s what les mis is for.”
andrew furrows his eyes. “you just said that you liked french literature.”
neil starts fidgeting with his fingers. “yeah, i was talking more like the little prince and uh… peter pan.”
andrew hums.
“neil, do you know where your name comes from?”
neil shakes his head.
“it’s scottish. you know what else is scottish?”
“whiskey?”
“peter pan.”
beil laughs nervously, “go figure.”
“this isn’t your room is it.”
neil sighs, “it’d kevins.”
“and im guessing you’re not a lit major.”
neil shakes his head. “but, the part of me speaking french wasn’t a lie. I do.”
“terrific.”

Embarrassed asking this bc I've been following for a hot minute now and still don't know anything haha--where would I start if I were to look into reading abt Lancelot and Galehaut?
NO ITS OK LOL medieval lit is fucking insane especially getting into it with no background here is my brief spiel: <- said before i ended up typing 800 words. sorry.
medieval lit is complex and extremely hard to approach. let alone that most translations work under the assumption the only people to ever read them would be academics with a background in medieval lit, getting into and reading it is a challenge. if u have an interest and dont want to have to brave one of the longest and most complex stories written in medieval french and translated by many many people into english, im happy to say the story of galehaut and lancelot has enough influence to have a pretty decent modern english retelling of the main beats in Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles. (my pdf here, tho copies are really easy to find in bookstores and stuff this is only from 2007). It takes the main story of the vulgate and condenses it down to focus on just the love story of galehaut and lancelot. its pretty fun. the liberties it takes are slight and work for telling a coherent story.
Now, if you have read it, or want the real Galehaut experience, heres whats up, medieval texts and modern poems undercut:
Galehaut is in 5. i think maybe 6 medieval stories total. youre in for a treat as this is maybe the shortest "i want to get into arthuriana and i like this character where do i start?!" list possible besides like. drian the gay. or some other fucking nobody.
The main one, again, is the Vulgate Cycle. This is the main old french tale that inspired a looot of other arthurian works all over Europe. Its huge. Im not done scanning it BUT, i am done scanning the section Galehaut appears in, the beginning, because i got depressed after that lol. (Heres my scan of part 1, part 2 is on my website im too lazy to get both links).
From there, you got the most detailed explanation of the story of Galehaut, and can read the more fun shit and whacky shit with him and Lancelot in it YAY. Heres what i got pdfed on me rn:
Biggest one to note is he has a side role in Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur. Nothing huge, and they do mix him up with Galahad at one point? but hes there.

In other bad middle english texts, Lancelot of the Laik Book 3 has Galehaut, but its unfinished and also. only in middle english. fun footnote, dont read it. one day ill post my translation of book 3 alone LOL.
Short and sweet Galehaut is in The Old Knight, the greek text we have. he tries to fight for palamides and lancelot and tristan then try to fight for him. its cute. the old knight is an odd little thing just had to bring it up LOL (had to download a pdf for this one the site i read the article on before doesnt seem to be up.... just scroll to the bottom!) <- thisll be up on my website soon i forgot it i guess
Now for the funniest reveal: Galehaut plays more of a role in Tristania than Arthuriana most of the time (well. the arthurian branch of tristania im not getting into this rn). Why is Galehaut and Lancelots relationship expanded upon only here? only god can answer that.
Here is the Tavola Ritonda. Its one of the oddest texts i know of. Medieval italian. Very Very brutal. BUT. has some really interesting Galehaut takes and moments hidden in the . whatever is happening in this fucking text. its long as hell but mentioning for fun. (pdfff)
aand more interestingly. Here is the Belarussian translation of that. Which is even fucking weirder. mostly different plot, still has lots of really cute galehaut moments including the bit he asks tristan to join his and lancelots marriage. oh well i love the povest. (and heres that pdf)
Now. this is the wild card round. Heres the weird shit and the Hovey.
If you can brave French. modern french not old dont worry, Pierre Sala has Tristan et Lancelot. an exceptionally fucking weird story. Galehaut does make a slight appearance but mostly, keyley, funnierly, his evil german cousin is a recurring villain for a few chapters. its weird. its fun. its french. (pdf)
and finally. this one is on its own level, here is my dedication to Richard Hovey. one of the greatest poets of 1885 or whenever he wrote his arthurian stuff. He was gay. he famously called himself the american oscar wilde (and maybe met him at a party? one time we found a source saying they made out at a party.). and he wrote one of the only poems featuring galehaut i know.
well ok its a collection of dramas. and galehaut is not the focus. but he is a main character and he is insane. I recommend reading literally all his works hes a fucking amazing poet, you can even find his other poetry online easily. but heres his list of works on the camelot project. oh my god read richard hovey. please . hes my favorite poet.

Greetings everyone! So uhm. its been a while since my last liveblog post. there have been some circumstances that made me really not wanna read, but now they have passed and I have risen from the ashes like a glorious phoenix and I can resume my divine mission of complaining about this mediocre-at-best book series to an audience of as many as 60 people if you can believe it. Also we're back to the style of post where I just jot down all my thoughts bullet-point style because my life is in shambles
Anyway, last time we had a chapter where literally nothing happened except for Lucien showing up at the very end, so lets see what he does in this chapter 47
I still cant believe its been only two months since Feyre started permanently living at the night court and forgiving Rhysand for torturing her, its taken me longer to forgive people at my school who mildly annoyed me. Also wait, Feyre was UTM for three months, shes spent more time consecutively being tortured by Rhysand than consecutively having a good time with him wth
Feyre stop fuckin jacking the bat boys off challenge (impossible!!)
Ive seen this part where Feyre talks about the bat boys being so much stronger than Lucien in english where shes like "Lucien may have trained to be a warrior, but Cassian, Azriel and Rhys were Warriors" like oh fuck, we gotta get out of here!! those guys are Proper Nouns!! But in the german version, this line is just "Lucien may have trained to become a warrior, but Cassian, Azriel and Rhysand were warriors" because nouns are always capitalized in german and not just when theyre Super Epic and Cool so you cant do that thing that english books do with proper nouns, and Idk i think thats pretty interesting
Something about Feyre being all like "theyre hunting me, its like Im their prey" really pisses me off, I think its because it could be cool and thematically relevant but instead its just kindof nothing
Speaking of which, Lucien coming ip to her and saying "We've been hunting for you" is so forced, it reminds me of how Tamlin would say these weird objectifying things to Feyre alllll the way at the start of ACOMAF even though hes never said shit like that before, except this is way worse because who on earth would say it like that?? hello?? If you were looking for someone who went missing, you'd say like, we've been searching for you or we've been looking for you, not we've been hunting for you thats just insane
HUH?? which high lord gave her the ability to slow down time??? Thats so overpowered and I dont remember anyone ever talking about it

Did this motherfucker really take the time to change his outfit just make his dramatic entrance just a little more dramatic? Honestly, if it was any other guy I would think thats so iconic, but because its Rhysand just wearing his fucking black tunic again I just want him to explode
"Has your mother, the Lady of the Autumn Court, not taught you that you should listen to a lady?" why he have to say that Lucien's mom is the Lady of the Autumn Court thats so awkward. Also yeah, it sounds more awkward translated from german to english because they use both 'Lady' and 'Dame' (which is german for lady) in the same sentence, but its still just a very bad line
This is actually kind of interesting because Im guessing Lucien called Rhys a dirty son of a bitch in the original and then he growled because its like, oh Lucien insulted his lovely mother that he loves soooo much, but its been translated here as 'Hurensohn' (lit. 'whore's son') so it gains this additional layer where Lucien is not just insulting his mom also using a word that's like a trigger for him which makes it much more impactful imo. good job, Ms. Ernst
The fact that Feyre is getting on Lucien's case for siding with Gamlin over her is mighty ironic when you consider whats gonna happen in acosf, but also Lucien right now and the IC in acosf are making the same choice of listening to their close friend of several centuries over his gf that theyve known for like a year. Like, yeah, obviously its super shitty in both cases but I do get why they did it. And thats not even factoring in the political power Tamlin and Rhys have over their friends, like, it really doesnt matter if you "dont enforce rank" because youre the super special ones who were literally chosen by god to rule, you have an inherent authority over the people around you
This is all so frustrating because I do sympathize with Feyre for feeling abandoned by Lucien because that is essentially what he did, but I really dont like how hes portrayed as being unambigiously in the wrong for caring more about politics or himself than Feyre when its like, first of all, politics impact sooooo many people of course making sure that the SC at leats looks stable from the outside is more important than Feyre's mental health, and second of all, Feyre also pretty much only cares about herself. Which is her right btw, she has been very traumatized, she should be prioritizing herself for a while now, i just dont like the way the narrative frames this whole thing
Honestly, Feyre's kinda slaying rn. Her with her big spooky bat wings being all like "when youve been trapped in the darkness for so long it becomes your best friend" is kinda cool, idc
Okay, nevermind, she slayed for exactly one line and then she was nearly choking on Tamlin's name "because of what Rhysand did to him" girlie that was centuries ago why are you making this about him when he was being abusive two months ago* *i dont think he was actually being abuse but thats the framing of the narrative so im just going with it
I would usually properly translate this line but my brain isnt up to it at the moment, but its onpage 528 and I think you'll know which one I mean if you look at it, but I dont really understand Feyre being like "if I had stayed at the spring court and just given myself over to my own misery, I wouldve learned to take pleasure in other people's pain" Is it trying to justify Feyre being needlessly cruel by implying that it was inevitable and that her UTM trauma would've made her become like this no matter what? First of all, you cant say that for sure though and second of all, wowweweee Sarah Janett Maas knows soooooo much about mental health, she should become a psychiatrist, no degree necessary

The Transcendent Crane is Lonely No More: Localizing Two Lines in “The Divine Damsel of Devastation”

GOD SOMW OF T HESE LINES IN CHINESE. UNDERSTANDING. SHENHE. TRAVELER. YUN JIN’S ADDED LINES WITH SUCH IDIOMS. AAAAAAAA
(…I sat down and wrote this in like a day, haha)
Since these two lines in “Divine Damsel of Devastation” made me cry for the first time in months in a shower, I’d like to attempt to localize it in English prose. Huge thanks to the faithful English translation by electric_goldfish on Reddit for noting the idioms in the Chinese lyrics. Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.
I’ll show the translations side by side, then a note on localizing Chinese idioms, and then the lyrics’ idioms and their likely in-game meaning.
(I’ve gone through about a third of The Crane Returns on the Wind, so please excuse any inaccuracies in interpretations of the in-game meaning…🙇💦)

Allusions, Imagery, Localization
When it comes to allusions to Chinese idioms, you read the characters and understand their literal meaning and—if you’re well-versed in Chinese ancient texts—the meaning of the idiom it refers to. This is what makes idioms hard to translate in general. Translating the words literally would lose the nuance of the underlying meaning in English because the idiom doesn’t exist in English. Translating the words by the idiom’s meaning would lose the beautiful imagery and the fact that it’s an idiom.
So I’ve chosen to include both the underlying meaning of the referenced idiom, and the literal imagery of the idiom itself, to hopefully convey both aspects in English at once. The hardest part is to word it so that both meanings are clear and not mixed… It still sounds a little awkward in English, but such is the restraints of language, I guess.
曲高未必人不识
曲高 (qu3gao1) comes from the idiom 曲高和寡 (qu3gao1he4gua3). It means the higher the soprano, the fewer the number of people who can match their note. It’s used to describe the loneliness of highly-skilled people with no one on their level.
In Shenhe’s case, the “height” refers to her elevated (but false) status as an Adeptus, as the people of Liyue perceive her. And her loneliness is the emotional distance between her and them because of this reputation.
Also, “transcendent” is a better translation of 仙 (xian1, what we know as “Adeptus” in the official English localization), as suggested by my professor who specializes in translating ancient Chinese poems. Here, “transcendent” refers to the aforementioned highly-skilled people and also Shenhe’s high reputation as an “Adeptus”.

自有知音和清词
知音 (zhi1yin1) literally means “understands the sound”. It refers to someone who understands another’s thoughts intimately. One could translate it to “empathetic soulmate”.
知音 comes from the story 伯牙善鼓琴 (lit. “Boya is Skilled at Playing the Qin”). In it, Boya plays the qin (a string instrument) with an image (e.g. high mountains) in his mind, and the other character understands what image he is thinking of through the sounds of his playing. The term refers to this second character.
In Shenhe’s case, the Traveler is her 知音. Following the music image from the previous metaphor of a soprano, the Traveler understands the “image” in her “high notes”, meaning they understand Shenhe’s loneliness through perhaps her words and actions.
清词 (qing1ci3) literally means “clear poetry”. The connotation is beautiful—and elevated—poetry and words. Previous metaphors are all about singing and music, so here it likely means “lyrics”.
One important note here: 和 (he4) is pronounced with the fourth tone, meaning “join in [the singing]”, as opposed to the second tone, meaning “and”.
Continuing with the music metaphor, the Traveler “joins” Shenhe’s lone “singing” and “notes” (representing her loneliness) with their own “lyrics”. Meaning, the Traveler understands her so she isn’t without human connections anymore.
It was pretty hard to localize it and even now I’m not quite sure if my localization would bring across the full meaning at a first glance, but I hope my explanations on the allusions and idioms bring across the things I felt when I read these lines, haha

its the degree i want to go for and it's a safe thing to shoot for bc even if i dont make it in i love the english lit path anyway, and i know this degree isnt Required to write professionally but i just
i have had to hide what i write for 13 years from family. i leave no physical evidence. im 27 and because my family is queerphobic and my mom is off and on Weird abt fantasy genre stuff ive defaulted to showing Nothing. and so all my creative life has been suffocated and growing like weeds between the sidewalk gaps and its what i love doing the most, but making truly original stuff is difficult, and im anxious for when i can finally commit to writing and creating without having to leave where i live, when i can write physically and have notes and ideas all over, when i can just be free and be me and have my own schedule and itll be a relief
but i dont know if the version of me that gets to live alone is actually gonna be suddenly more creative than i am now. idk if im actually good enough to pursue this. i have no read on myself and while i think i can say i write fic decently well ive been running on fumes and hiding for so long that im afraid that freedom wont actually let me be more creative. i just dont know if ill be able to bloom into more. i dont have the faith in myself and i dont know what ill be and if i should pursue it or if its dumb of me to try

were you named after anyone?
sort of. I asked my mum and she listed a few people but the main one is a very hedonistic character from a book.so that’s a fun role to fill. the other people are a bit more daunting in their accomplishments.
do you have kids?
no and I dont want any.
do you use sarcasm a lot?
not very often, I guess. ive been told I am very difficult to read if im telling a joke or not. especially sarcasm. im mostly sarcastic when im being mean rather than funny. I guess im more likely to be dry?
what's the first thing you notice about people?
I honestly have no clue. definitely not their shoes. and probably not their face because I can never remember what people look like. I sat in a car with my driving instructor for months but could not tell you what he looked like. physically, I probably notice hair and clothes first? but otherwise if im meeting someone new I just notice whether they talk to me or not and how they hold a conversation.
what's your eye color?
blue/green.
scary movies or happy endings?
im a wimp and I dont like scary movies. so I guess I prefer happy endings, although I dont mind some tragedy. for tv I almost exclusively watch comedies. i dont watch a lot of films so i’ll mostly watch what other people want. im a fan of rewatching, so it is rare I will willingly watch something new on my own. as for books, ill read anything! but especially interesting gothic classics and translated books. I like slice of life and anything with great world building. not a huge fan of ya probably because it was all I read when I was younger so I got a bit bored of it.
any special talents?
I never know how to answer that. im decent at various things but nothing in particular. if you showed me a relatively common uk bug I think I would be able to id it.
what are your hobbies?
im into entymology. I like taking pictures of bugs and recording their species. there are other things I do, but im hesitant to call them hobbies because I dont do them that regularly.
have any pets?
yes! a beautiful, wonderful cat.
what sports do you play/have you played?
I dont play sport regularly. did the usual sports at school. (I did some more interesting stuff but im trying to be humble. im big into baseball - Ive got a batting average of .328, have 118 home runs and batted in 1014 runs. im also in the baseball hall of fame. that’s right guys, im baseball superstar wade boggs. Im a true american - I love baseball and posting on tumblr and my family and beer)
how tall are you?
I honestly dont know. 5 foot something. that should narrow it down.
favorite subject in school?
I liked english lit in later school. earlier on I liked all the arty stuff best. textiles was a lot of fun but the teacher was a prick.
dream job?
games design but im shite at coding. :( conservation work would be cool. havent decided yet. when I was a kid I wanted to be a farmer and used to like planning my future farm layout. now I just play stardew valley.
im not sure who to tag because I think most of my mutuals have been tagged by other people already. or have already done it. ive spent too long deliberating over who to tag/not tag. and so this is an open invitation to whoever wants to do this. you dont have to be my mutual! The tension between you and Professor Fezwilliam is palpable. It’s a waiting game to see who is going to break first. You sit there, grading papers with a red pen as he sits in his desk with a book in hand.
“What are you reading?” you ask him, expecting an answer along the lines of Kafkha or Keats.
“The manga for Naruto,” he explains, not looking up from his page.
“Oh,” you answer, placing down your red pen. “I thought you’d be reading The Sun Also Rises, since we’re going to be reading that book next as a class?”
Fezwilliam furrows his brow. “What? Never read that.”
“What? You’ve never read it?”
“No…” Fezwilliam sighs, placing his book down. “I don’t think you fully understand how many chapters of Naruto there are.”
“Oh,” you say, looking down. “I see.”
“You see, this is why I’m the professor and you’re not. I know all the big words. Like ‘capybara’, you know what that means?”
You nod. “Yes, it’s an animal.”
Fezwilliam narrows his eyes. “Lucky guess. What about ‘hippocampus’”
“That’s a part of the brain,” you tell him.
Fezwilliam chuckles. “No, you silly girl. It’s a big animal that’s in the water.”
He’s standing in front of your desk now. He looks you up and down tantalizingly, your whole body on fire. The manga for Naruto is open and long forgotten on his desk now. “I hate to quote Shakespeare, but if I must, ‘Wouldeth thou desire to sucketh my phallus?’”

how did i decide a senior high school strand/college degree/career?:
unfortunately, i cannot help on on the High School Strand kasi 'di ko naabutan yung strand system in high school VSJHFVKSJDHGSD. my batch graduated right when they started doing strands, so i never got to experience it, huhu, nor do i understand the process (even after my younger sibling has tried many times to explain it to me, minsan bobo ako jVKJSHF)
but maybe my next stuffs can help out :D
in choosing a college course i.....really kinda just picked what i wanted to do. and this was a huge privilege i'll always be grateful to my family for, whatever i wanted to study, they'd support me. the courses i applied for in diff schools were the following, in order of first to last choice: Creative Writing, English/Comparative Literature, and BA Psychology (tho disclaimer: i only put this last one on application forms cuz it was needed, i didnt actually want to study that very much HAHA, it was writing or lit for me all the way)
on why i wanted those courses is....idk it's another thing that i think is also a privilege. ive always known that ive wanted to write, to study writing, and to pursue it later on. ive been writing and reading ever since i was a kid and i was pretty deadset on it from an early age.
i know that a lot of people dont have a similar experience tho sometimes, but i guess my advice for how to pick a college course is: what can you see yourself enjoying learning more and more and more about?
ofc, this gets a bit more complicated if ur family is strict and will only allow u to take certain degrees huhu. but if uve got the freedom to choose, i'd say dont just think about what you like, but what you'd like to learn about.
cuz college is work. it's a LOT of work. and while liking something can help, that Like can fall flat when youve gotta be doing all the requirements. it helps if, whatever u choose, it's something uve got a craving for knowledge for.
and honestly, if you dont know what to get or if you choose something and realize it isnt for you, thats okay too! you can shift courses in college! or if you want to learn more, you can take a minor degree! sometimes your first choice wont work, and thats okay. you can choose again and see what fits.
how i chose my career was a bit different from this cuz....the ph job market is in shambles JHVASFVASKJFHASVKFJAH
i currently work as a copywriter and despite the stresses, i really enjoy my job! but this wasnt my first job (my first job fucking sucked so bad that i resigned within a month) and i didnt land it straight out of college (i was out of college for over a year before landing my current gig). i got lucky with my current job, bc when it comes to careers, it's a lot harder to have a choice.
of course, all the jobs i was looking into were writing related: content writer, SEO writer, scriptwriter, etc etc. but theres a lot of companies out there that treat writers like absolute shit, a lot of companies who wont get back to you after an interview, a lot of companies who wont take you. i didnt choose my career so much as get lucky in the job market gacha (lol), but my advice here is that like...search within the industries you think you'd, at best, enjoy working in or, at minimum, can endure being in
which is a very depressing statement, i know.....life is tough, but there are good jobs out there with ppl who wont treat u like crud. if i got lucky, i can only hope more ppl can get this kind of experience too
and like i said in the college bit, if u find urself in a job u dont vibe with and u have the privilege/stability to be able to quit it:.....just quit it
a lot of these life choices are made to be really Big by schools and teachers and everybody really, but you dont have to get it right the first time. you can start over, it's alright, youve got your whole life ahead of you. if your life allows u the privilege and freedom to choose and discover new things, dont hold yourself back
i hope this could help somehow. i realize that a lot of this is medj philosophical jHVJHSFKJSD but back when i was in college, i wish somebody told me that it's not the end of the world if i didnt get it right the first time. so thats what i'll tell you, cuz it's true :'D
and as for debate tips HAHA, okay heres where i can give some more concrete advice because i LOVE DEBATING. I LOVE PUBLIC SPEAKING AND PRESENTING OMG OMG. it's a dream come true for me, people HAVE to listen to what ive got to say, it's a huge power trip JVSKJHFVAJS
ANYWAY, DEBATE TIPS:
i am so sorry that the topic that got assign to u and ur grp isnt something u like huhu. but my overall tip for debate (and any public speaking tbh) is. fake it
like, legit, just fake it. the delivery portion of debate, to me, is basically theatre and acting HVKJHVFKJAHFAS
imagine the most confident speaker uve ever seen urself, maybe somebody so confident na nainis ka sa kaniya, and do exactly that:
get that good posture, make motions with your hands because this helps get people's attention. if eye contact makes u nervous (it makes me so nervous huhu) u can blur/unfocus ur eyes, U Do Not See It
maintain a good rhythm with your speaking too. speak with moderate loudness and emphases for the less important, and then idiin mo in the bits na gusto mo parang mic drop moment ahfjshfa (which is usually saved best for the latter portion of an argument, but good to pepper it in as well thru the whole thing with ur most important pieces of info)
tho ofc thats all only on the public speaking bit. if im remembering correctly, high school debate does also rely heavily on the research/outline stuffs u have to do prior to the debate, and for that, i have less advice huhu. im not all that great of a researcher, but as long as uve got ur reputable sources all arranged well, oks na yan!
i feel like at this point i shld tell u that in high school, medj patapon ako na estudyante, basta pumasa ako, ok na yan sakin JHVJSHFVKDSJHFKS
that being said, pls take all my advice w a grain of salt, ha! because what works for me might not work for you. everybodys got different methods of speaking, researching, choosing degrees and careers. but even if what i said doesnt match what wld work for u, i hope ur main takeaway na lang is that u can do whatever u want in whichever way works best for you

not sure. i have a hard time crying. maybe when we had to put one of the horses down

seriously, i've only done softball and horseback riding. was a catcher for a travel team for several years before my knees gave out. i ride for pleasure/work now. casually ive done pretty much everything--i like kayaking a lot
