Gothic Tropes: The Cursed Wanderer
“I pass, like night, from land to land…” I mentioned the cursed wanderer in my recent post on Nautical Gothic, so I wanted to examine the concept here in a bit more detail. This is a character archetype that finds its way into many Gothic works both new and classic, either in the form of a villain, a tragic side character, or an antihero. The cursed wanderer is an outcast from society, usually…

I love the ugliness of love. Removing love from its socially accepted roots. Love as not a mere source of tragedy and sadness, but as an active corruptive power over those it mystifies. Love as the addiction without cure and the wound forever bleeding. I love seeing the beauty of something so coveted spun on its head.

I have absolutely zero business imagining Yule Ball designs since I’m not even remotely close to writing that chapter (which I would like to but we’re not even two chapters in) but also I have zero self control so here have them anyways.

maybe its just me and my love of all things gothic, but i've been really surprised by the classification of saltburn as a (poorly executed) 'eat the rich' satire. i would've said it was primarily gothic fiction and that the class commentary was more a backdrop to that than the major thesis of the film, so it's interesting that a lot of people seemed to interpret it mostly or entirely through the lens of class satire. i'll be interested to see if the interpretation/reaction to the movie changes at all between the theatrical release and the digital one in a couple weeks; my perception is that a not insignificant number of people went into saltburn expecting something like parasite and were justifiably disappointed. not me though i'm a sucker for a fucked up gothic romance

Gothic Tropes: The Faustian Bargain
Gothic Tropes: The Faustian Bargain
We all know never to make a deal with the devil right? The concept of engaging in trades or bargains with demonic figures has been a common motif in folklore around the world for centuries, but this particular iteration—the Faustian bargain—derives its name from the Germanic folk legend of Doctor Faust. These legends spring from a real historical figure, a sixteenth-century itinerant alchemist…

You know how Gothic/romantic horror is full of the damsel in distress trope?
Well...
What if it was a mansel in distress instead?
Just imagine:
A beautiful, distressed *man* in a loose, partly unbuttoned white shirt...
Running for his life, or trapped in a Gothic castle, or stalked by a mysterious monster, or whatever...
And getting all beautifully bloodied and wounded in the process.
Mmmmmm, yes please 🖤🤩

❝ Be my victim, ❞ he said.
❝ No, ❞ she murmured.
❝ I won’t force it upon you, ❞ he replied, the perfect gentleman. ❝ I won’t oblige you to die, but think, think; I kill you here – if I unhook you, ❞ he traced the path of the promised wound with his hook, it ran from groin to neck.
❝ Think how they would mark this place with their talk, point it out as they passed by and say: ‘She died there; the woman with the green eyes.’ Your death would be a parable to frighten children with. ❞

I'd love to know more about your OCs when you have time
😭💘💘💘 SHJHGAJWHFG this makes me happy!!!
I don't want to give away too much so that my adhd brain doesn't overshare and lose motivation to work on the story so I'm struggling to hold back 😫
It takes place in a house on the shore, the shifting rooms of the house, the dense ocean fog and moving garden vines reveal and obscure the history of it's inhabitants. An unexpected visitor washes up on the shore one afternoon. Lucile and Vincent are from entirely different time periods. Lucile is blind in one eye, Vincent walks with a cane. AAAH I don't know what else to share that is not saying too much 😖 It is a character driven gothic romance/horror about trauma, death, regret and revenge and the story changes depending on your choices. I'm sketching a bunch of art of them and been writing in between work so I'll be sharing more stuff soon 🥰 I'm so flattered by the interest it really means so much to me 😭 I want to share their story to the best of my ability and I'm teaching myself a lot of new things so I can do that, I really hope you will enjoy it once it's done 🥺
