3001 has me thinking about graves.

Are astronauts adrift in space any different from the body’s of sailors adrift at sea? Would disturbing them to either bring them home or revive them be disturbing a grave? Is it like a shipwreck where sometimes it’s just best to let them lie there?

Everyone knows where the spot is, it’s well marked and most divers and boats will steer clear to let them rest. Would space be any different? Would all of the solar system be a resting place?

Discovery is referred to as “the Mary Celeste of space” a ghost ship. When they are found they’re explored, and what happened can be speculated. The ship can even be brought back if possible but what happens if you ever find one of the ghosts adrift?

Does Frank feel as though his rest has been disturbed? As if he’d been pulled from the grave without much regard for his own thought? Or is that just an idea we have for people we cannot recover as they can’t say way they think?

i learned that Ghost ships, ships found abandoned with no sign of the crew, still occur even with modern methods of rescue, safety and communication. The last recorded ship to be found with no sign of life was in January 2021 (x)

Eerie ghost ships with skeletons keep washing up in Japan. Skeletons with products from North Korea were found on the boats.

Many of the ships have only dead bodies or skeletons on board but in recent months, several have been found with their desperate North Korean crew still alive.

A boat found last November had bare light bulbs commonly used to attract fish at night.

They are usually found empty or with only corpses on board off Japan's western coast.

Markings on some of the vessels, in Korean, indicated that they belonged to the North's military which is heavily involved in the fishing industry.

Unsurprisingly, there has been no mention of the missing vessels from North Korea.

So, what is going on?  It has been suggested the sailors could be defectors trying to make it across the Sea of Japan to escape the regime in Pyongyang. But the crews found alive have asked to be sent back to North Korea.

One hypothesis posed by Japanese media is that the North Korean leadership is demanding bigger catches and sailors are being forced to take chances to meet those targets. This one was found w/8 bodies aboard. 

Japan is struggling to deal with all this. It is common in North Korea for workers to keep some of the surplus they generate past the targets set by the state (Quasi-capitalism).

This promise of some private surplus is also thought to drive people to take greater risks to improve their situation - which could well include taking desperate chances at sea.

Ghosts of the Queen Mary

On May 27, 1936, the RMS Queen Mary set sail from Southampton, England, completing her maiden voyage in New York just a few days later. For the next three years, the ship was the height of luxury, transporting such notable passengers as Clark Cable, Bob Hope, Elizabeth Taylor, and Winston Churchill. Its elaborate facilities included two indoor swimming pools, beauty salons, libraries, tennis courts, and more. However, the luxurious amenities didn’t last.

In 1939, the Queen Mary was stripped down and began service as a World War II troop transport ship. For the next eight years, the ship hauled tens of thousands of servicemen across the sea, earning the nickname the Grey Ghost due to its color and speed. After the war ended, the Queen Mary was refitted for passenger travel and again served as a luxury liner until retiring from service in 1967.

Now permanently moored in Long Beach, California, the Queen Mary serves as a popular tourist attraction, complete with restaurants, a museum, and a hotel. Legend has it the historic ship is also haunted by the men, women, and children who died aboard.

A little girl named Jackie reportedly haunts the second-class swimming pool. Legend has it she drowned there, though there are no historical records of such an event. Nevertheless, staff and visitors report seeing a child’s ghostly figure near the pool. An elderly woman in black and white also haunts the area.

On October 2, 1942, the Queen Mary accidentally rammed and sank her escort ship, the HMS Curacoa, as she carried over 10,000 troops to Europe. More than 200 men died in the collision, and now Queen Mary staff and visitors reportedly hear strange sounds coming from the ship’s bow.

In 1988, a former marine engineer told Unsolved Mysteries he once heard the sound of water pouring into the Queen Mary. Thinking there had been a rupture of some kind, the man rushed to investigate but found nothing unusual. The engineer later learned he’d been in the part of the ship that had collided with the Curacoa. Unsolved Mysteries also left a voice-activated recorder in the same area and reportedly captured the sounds of rushing water, tearing metal, and crying men.

A man named John Peddler reportedly haunts the lower area of the ship. It seems John was crushed by Door 13 during a routine drill and now lingers near the site of his death. The legend got its start after witnesses claimed to see a bearded man in blue overalls disappear in front of the ill-fated door.

According to a plaque on the ship, at least 16 crew members died on the Queen Mary, succumbing to everything from tetrachloride poisoning to a fall from the gangway. Some reports place the total number of deaths, including passengers and servicemen, at 49. Is it possible the men, women, and children who died aboard still roam the ship today? Or are the stories nothing more than fanciful legends?

PrettyBoy ship (Tankhun/Tae)

So this one is kind of for @glamgoblin because we re talking about ghost ships and one of mine for KinnPorsche is TankhunTay. (I will probably go back and forth between spelling Tay like this (Tay) and like this (Tae) because idk...just be aware.) But we'll start off with some clarifications: 1- I have not read the full novel. I have it, but haven't finished it so my knowledge of the novel storyline is minimal. 2- I do know about the Time cheating on Tay storyline and that there's a Time/Tae/Tem throuple. Whether that's a long term thing or not--idk, and idc. Now onto this particular ghost ship!!

It's not wildly unpopular, I see them included in a fair number of fics, but it's just not the most popular ship for either of them really. Now in general I do headcanon Tankhun as ace, so I don't pair him off with anyone in my fics at this point. The reason that I like the pair though is kind of two-fold, one is purely aesthetics. They are both gorgeous and fashionable people.

Yes, Tankhun tends to be a little bit louder in their choice of attire, but there's a common interest there. Even without the fashion aspect, their color palettes work together, with Tay often wearing black and white, and Tankhun in vibrant color, occasionally with base of black or white.

I also personally headcanon that Tay is part of a mafia family, maybe a smaller family that works with the Theereapanyakuls. But he's not in an active role, and that's why he's at the shooting range and such. Friends with Kinn or not he can't be just a civilian. I think he runs one of his family's legitimate businesses which would be a fashion house. Maybe he designs as well, I do like that idea, but I also think that if he did he's not using his own name, or they're stating that the fashion house designed it and not attributing it to an individual. This is because like Kim he wouldn't put himself out there in a place where he could gain a lot of fame or influence when he can be linked back to his family.

Now for the I guess emotional reasons of why I think this ship works. I personally think that in order for anyone to work with Tankhun in a romantic relationship they need to be more on the mellow side of things. Tankhun needs someone who can balance and ground him. Not to say he needs someone to rein him in, but just someone who provides a calming presence while also accepting and enjoying Tankhun's vibrant personality. I feel like Tay can provide that. He's definitely fun, but he's also very intelligent, observant, kind of circumspect. [Sidenote: the subtlety of this acting by Us is freaking amazing. When I went into the show I didn't know anything about the cheating storyline...this was the only hint I needed that there was trouble in TimeTay paradise. That's real skill.]

We know Tankhun would have known Tay for quite a while, since him and Time are supposed to be school friends of Kinn, so at the very least high school, which puts them at about 8 years of knowing each other, but could be longer. If you consider that Tae is the child of another mafia family, maybe one they've worked with regularly they might have even known each other even younger, and it was just in high school that he became a close friend of Kinn and began to have more of a relationship with the Theerapanyakul family in general. Which is also going to create a level of trust with them. Tankhun, due to his trauma would struggle with trust, but would be able to trust Tay because he's someone that's kind of always been there. Perhaps not in a very close relationship, more peripherally for a long time, but still there, still present. Tay would have been present at least for the final kidnapping situation and the fall out from that. His level of involvement would vary, but to me he seems the type that would have checked in sporadically if he were at the main family house. Maybe sent cards or flowers. Tae's quite soft boy, so I can see him wanting to express that he's thinking about Tankhun and worried about him after all of it, even if they aren't super close.

Following the events of season 1 (and hopefully the actual death of Korn) I can see Tankhun making real strides with his anxiety and Tay being a presence that is around more often (after kicking Time to the curb) and them having an opportunity to have more meaningful conversations. Like not to be mean, but consider Tay showing up to have dinner and Kinn and Porsche are on the other side of the table being Kinn and Porsche, and he's now a third wheel. So he starts talking more with Tankhun. They have the shared interests of fashion but also a shared history. Tay can be a presence that also helps and encourages Tankhun to keep up with the progress we see him make in season 1. Runway seats at a fashion show I think could be a heck of a bribe to get him out of the house.

I call it the ship PrettyBoys for the obvious reason--they're both so pretty, especially their design and costuming in the show itself. Clearly the actors are quite pretty IRL, they're just generally a little more lowkey fashion wise, unless it's for an event. So....that's kind of why I like the ship, and some of my own personal headcanons about it. And as a special treat...just look at these beans...so damn cute.
