Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
❝ Adam Kelleher was used to not being "good enough". A son of one of Gotham City's wealthiest families, he was never "good enough" for his father, a cruel man who seemed his son too weak to take the helm of the family's manufacturing business. He was never "good enough" for his teachers, who thought he spent too much time scribbling down chemical formulas and doodling inventions when he should have been paying attention to his lessons. The only person he'd ever been accepted by was Bruce Wayne, his best (and only) friend since childhood, who had shown him that being "good enough" was, frankly, a load of crock.
Now twenty-eight, Adam had found a good job at one of Gotham's engineering labs, spending his days bringing his boyhood doodles of inventions into being, using his free time to come up with gadgets for his vigilante best friend, and occasionally trying to set himself up on a date. But then Gotham's corrupt officials start turning up dead, a cryptic killer has started leaving riddles for the Batman, and Bruce needs Adam more than ever.
Adam may have never been deserving of the rest of the world's approval. But maybe, just maybe, he might be "good enough" to help his childhood-friend-turned-crush solve the Riddler's puzzles, take the psychotic killer down, and hopefully save their godforsaken city. ❞

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CHALLENGE. day one - march 6th. “I’M A DAMSEL, I’M IN DISTRESS, I CAN HANDLE THIS”
Everyone had someone they looked up to growing up, for lots of us, that was someone in the media, and for lots of girls across the country, they came in the shapes of Disney characters. For this day, we want you to show which female media icon your OC looked up to as a little girl. Whether that be Megara, Princess Leia or even Katniss Everdeen.
Amelia Rowe looked up to Ariel and Princess Leia. As a relatively shy and curious girl, Ariel represented Amelia in many ways. Amelia also wanted to understand the world around her, and with her Autism she really struggled (also she loved mermaids...and red hair). Princess Leia was a woman who didn't take any shit, and Amelia loved that. Space Princess? Sign her up!
Lauren Murray looked up to Hermione Granger, Padmè Amidala and The Spice Girls. As a 90s gal, The Spice Girls influenced her the most, whilst Padmé and Hermione told her it was cool to be smart.
Poppy Alton looked up to Rapunzel and Barbie. Poppy grew up in the 2000's, and her faviroute doll was Journalist Barbie, who proved that Poppy could become whatever she wanted. Rapunzel taught her that dreams can come true, and to stand up for herself.
+ Bonus Amelia edit

——
It hurts. The painful thing about that agreement was there it felt like a little thread was snapped off. They say a break up between you and a girlfriend is hard, but of a friendship? That feels like worsening a open wound.
It’s been days now.
He was at Jarvis’s house in a guest room unpacking up his things and on the phone with his nephew, Tony, to make sure they were still up for a ride to the park. Even if Howard nor himself didn’t want to see each other’s face, still didn’t mean he wasn’t going to speak with his friend and nephew.
He felt bad lying to his kid, saying that he was just going on a break from the house and a small mission afterwards. But he knew he was saving young Tony from heartbreak, hoping things can return back to the way it was.
“So buddy, what else did you do today?” Jason asked into the phone, with a loopy grin hearing his voice.
“Ohh! Me and mommy went to the beach! I made a sandcastle.” Tony said with so much enthusiasm in his voice.
~~~
Downstairs in the workshop center stood two chairs, one empty and the other being occupied by the man of the house. He was tinkering on an old set of equipment and replacing a few tapes from earlier that week.
His mind was running miles a minute, chewing the lower edge of his lips and running a hand across his hair. He couldn’t focused.
He hate to admit but he felt like a missing piece wasn’t clear.
“Howard?”
Tumblr media
A voice called out his name. Looking up from his spot at the desk to glance over at the voice. There stood in the doorway listening was his wife. Her blonde curls looked more like waves, as her eyes gently lightened by shiny lights from the hallway.
“Hm?” He responded back, waving for her to come over.
She sat down gently on his lap, running a finger underneath his deep chocolate brown curls.
“Are you coming to bed anytime soon?” Asked Maria with a soften smile.
“Ohhh. Oh um, yeah sure…just trying to crack this..” Howard replies softly with a sad smile that he couldn’t hide from his wife.
“The equation or JJ?”
“What about JJ?”
“Don’t play dumb, Howard..”
He sighed, “…what do you want me to say? Admit that i was harsh on him? That he was right?”
“I think you know the answer to that, honey.” Maria simply replies.
Howard knew that he missed up. They both did. But he’s too much of a mess, to point out the narrative of the situation. He let his friend walk out that door after saying he doesn’t want to ever see him again. To get out of his life. He should’ve stopped him before he left the house.
Jason will always be there for him. But will he forgive him after this?
“I should’ve stopped him..” Howard admitted softly, it came out as a whisper.
“Why didn’t you?” Maria questioned his actions, already knowing the response.
“..I couldn’t admit that he was right. I knew he wouldn’t listen after what i said…”
“You will figure it out.”
“Where is he now?”
“At Jarvis’s house. Be told me he will be moving back to New York soon…”
Tumblr media
That same weekend, the pair kept crossing over one another at work. Neither one said a word, only a short simple nod to acknowledge one another’s presence in the room. It felt like a headache was coming, this pinging reminder of what happened.
Jason didn’t bother looking at Howard most of the day, finding himself walking away to speak to others about a concept or bumping into Jarvis outside the building. He sighed, rubbing his face in annoyance.
Howard stayed in his office when he wasn’t chatting with his colleagues or having lunch with his friends, such as Hank Pym. Every single time he saw his old friend walk past his side of the floor, he sighed deeply and loudly at the sight.
It felt like a break up where might’ve screwed up their reputations within the group.
Tumblr media
As much as their friends didn’t say anything, they felt like something was off in the air. Yeah sure their little group has always been until the end in agreements and tried to make calls to fix things. Plenty of times, Howard fought with Hank Pym where chairs would be thrown across the room.
Some things just couldn’t be fixed but Peggy Carter wasn’t having it today.
She stormed into the room knocking some scene with Jason and Howard, dragging both adult men into a large office to speak together. She would’ve brought bigger guns to the playing field but she didn’t want to bring half of the group into this. Not today.
She stood in the room with her arms crossed, “You two better pull your head out of your asses! I’m sick of this. I’ve seen you fight before plenty of times where you walked out of the bloody building but this?! It’s incredible!”
“Peg—” Howard spoke up but was cut off.
“Ah! I don’t want to hear it. I don’t know what exactly happened here but you two are going to fix it or so god help me.”
“And what else is there to say huh? Peg—” Jason add but this time was cut off by the women.
“OHH! This is much more to say. You will will resolve this bloody issue soon, if it’s the thing you do today.”
Before both men can say an word, Peggy Carter walked out closing the door behind her. Jason rushed to try and open it, but he was too late. Howard sighed muttering something to himself, with his hands on his hips.
Neither said a word to one another, pacing around the room and just sipping on glasses of water that were set in place. There was dead silence that engulfed the area they sat in.
Until a laugh was heard.
It was Howard snickering and scoffing, shaking his head at the situation. Jason gave him a odd looking muttering to himself at the moment.
“What’s so funny?” He asked with a soft glare, not realizing this was the first word he has spoken to the man in days.
“This.” Howard simply said, waving his hand around to emphasize the meaning of his word, “Peg, trapped us here and we’re acting like complete morons to her.”
“Well can you blame her? I’ve not been in the best mood lately…you know why.”
“Let’s just try to get out, okay?”
“No. She wants to talk and we will..i hope.”
“What is there to talk about?”
“Howard…”
He felt a headache coming on from just the way he said it. Jason stayed silent, taking another sip of his drink and lightly chuckled at the cheesy ridiculousness of the situation.
“You see it! It’s funny.” Howard exclaimed with a half smile, pointing out the chuckle he just heard and sighed, “…look. I’m not good at this time, alright?”
Jason scoffed jokingly adding a small, “You know that’s right..sorry go on.”
“Uhhhh! Ok here it goes! I-i why is this so hard to say?!”
“Say it with your chest.”
“Do i have to?”
“Do you want to get out of here or not?”
“Oh god, fine! But you have to say your truth then!..uh i screwed up…”
“Look who’s learning!..and?”
“What do you want me to say? That i screwed up and you were right this whole time?”
“I think you just admitted it..”
“I did not!”
“Oh yes you did!”
“Jason!”
“Howard.”
Both men sent glares to one another however they couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. Sure they were pissed off, fumbling and fuming over the agreement with one another. There’s pride and ego always get the best of them.
It was hard for Howard to admit when he’s greatly wrong about something and it’s hard for Jason to admit when he clearly hears something then overstepped.
“Uh, look man, i’m sorry..i messed up, I didn’t mean everything i said in the lab, okay?” Jason said, rubbing a hand across his face with such seriousness and sincerity in his eyes.
“You called you a huge jerk, JJ! You said I was practically a poor excuse of a parent and I didn’t think of anything but my work!” Howard exclaimed taking a seat across from the table, feeling defensive.
“Because you don’t! I work just as much as you do, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have time to spend with our family and friends. I’ve seen the man you’ve become and I don’t like it. I overstepped when I mentioned it earlier..”
“You’re not getting it. I’m doing the right thing here!”
“No, I get it! I do understand it, but you don’t.”
“Everything I do is for our family, you know that! Not once have I thought I’m not giving you, Maria or Tony the best life I could. It’s why always i fight and invest time in my experiments.”
“Answer me this then. When was the last time you’ve gotten caught up watching a film with us? Or shown Tony the lab?”
“He’s not allowed in there. And I’m too busy for that, ask Peg she can tell you. I don’t have time for that.”
“That’s my point. You don’t make time for anyone else but yourself.”
“Uh, excuse me?!”
“I said once I say again, your mind is one of the most incredible things about you, and it has been transferred over to Tony. He’s a smart kid. He just wants to spend some time with you. Me and Peggy want to spend some time with you!”
“I don’t have—”
Howard cut himself off greatly with a sigh and placed his head in his hands. He grumbles underneath his breath, hating to admit when he’s wrong but he knew that he is. He’s not the same man he once was all those years ago and doesn’t intend to go backwards to fix it all.
Both men went slapping insults, excuses and explanations, back and forth like it was a battlefield. One would’ve laughed if they weren’t trying to make a point to one another, wanting to leave this room.
Howard felt like he couldn’t breathe as he huffed, “What do you want me to do? I’m not changing who i am now, JJ. I just started watching the world change and i want to be there to see it.”
“I’m..uhh, i don’t know, I don’t expect you to change anything. But i do know one thing. You’re a good man and a smart one, you’ll figure out. I just believe that i screw up and we need to fix this..” Jason admitted with a sigh, rubbing his temple.
“How?”
“Take it from someone who knows time is special and should be well spent, I think you need a break. Take some time off…”
“I don’t know if i can..and I don’t want to fight anymore. I’ve haven’t slept in days or ate well either thinking about the times I’ve lied to make myself feel better..”
Jason scoffed, “I’ve barely had a chance to process everything i said that day..I can’t sleep. I couldn’t remember the last time i ate well..I’m tired of not feeling good…”
“I’m sorry i let you walk out..I shouldn’t have said that you should leave, because I didn’t think you would..”
“It’s alright. I think the best course of action is to reevaluate our relationship..”
“It’s gonna take time.”
“I have all the time in the world.”
Howard chuckled, “Ain’t that right.”
Tumblr media
Each took their turns talking about what happened, how they left horrible and hoping to try to path up their issues. It felt like a long talk, 45 minutes of silence with a mix chatter between both sides. But there was still so much to talk about later on...
They stood up shaking hands, ready to get out of the room before Jason pulled him in for a hug. Howard hesitated to return the hug but for what’s it’s worth, he felt good hugging his friend back.
Howard hugged him like it’s his last day on earth and stayed there in his best friends arms with a smile as Jason returns the hug with a matching smile.
They missed each other deeply. It was sorta hilarious, how much time they spent without seeing another and the complaints from one each other about it. But it was simple really, they’re friends.
No matter what happens. Things stayed true for the pair. Respect, care, loyalty and a basic sense of love.
Despite everything they love each other like brothers, treat one another like a good friend and always respect their relationship like a pair of lovers.
The two left the room, decided to have lunch together and head back home. Howard was supposed to drive him back home to his house but took a short detour. He drove up to his house with a smile and his friend gave him an odd look, recognizing what he meant.
The moment they enter the house, Maria greeted both of her boys with loving arms gently kisses both their faces. The trio talked about their current living conditions and where they stand, until the pattern footsteps of the little man of the house came into view.
Little Tony Stark was wearing his NASA shirt and jeans, holding up his toy hammer with a smile climbing into his mama’s lap. She showered him in kisses.
His eye lighten up after seeing his second favorite person in the room, climbing out of his mother’s lap into his uncles. Jason smiled at the sight. Howard chuckled ruffled his son’s hair seeing the pure smile on his face, then leaned down to kiss his wife.
“Ewwww!!” Tony squeals covering his eyes.
—//—
Years went on, arguments came and went, simple small adjustment were made by their families rules and regulations came across to how everyone acted. Howard became a little comfortable and softer with his son letting him learn more from his father. Jason worked between units of SHIELD and other jobs, being care to watch his mouth every now and then. Or else Peggy would’ve smacked the living hell out of them.
Sadly Maria and Howard died, leaving their son in the care of his godmother Peggy Carter and uncle Jason Underwood. Along with Jarvis and his lovely wife Ana. So he was cared for, but still annoyed with his father. Something Tony would never let down is proving himself to be good or even greater than his father.
Peggy stayed in and out of SHIELD work meanwhile Jason retired from his office. He still kept tabs on the organization but decided to stay away after a few incidents resulting in his responses or concerns being blown over his head.
Currently he road up to the Stark Mansion, stepping out of his black cherry sports car and pulling out his sunglasses to see the beauty of the sight, after being gone for too long. He half smiled at the redesigns he added to the front of the house.
He greeted Pepper at the door, giving him a small hug and a kind kiss on the cheek. He handed her a bag of donuts and a freshly made cup of coffee he ordered just for her.
“You didn’t need to get me anything, J.” She replied with a smile, looking into the bag to see her favorite set of donuts.
“You deserve a sweet treat every once in a while, doll.” He added, chuckling looking over his shoulder at the small mess.
“Oh I’m sorry about the confusion and mess..”
“Oh no, it’s fine honey. Just didn’t expect this house to be so quiet at this time and hour…?”
“Ah, well you know where he is. Hasn’t come out of his lab since yesterday and I’m scared to check.”
“That’s what I’m here for. Go ahead and enjoy the coffee before it gets cold.”
Pepper thanked him, grateful to have him in her life and feeling lucky to see him around the house again. She left to the kitchen counter to enjoy her donuts and coffee in peace, she knew Tony was tinkering down there and it possibly involves some kind of new crazy investment of technological enhancements. Building a suitable way to help the people, according to him.
Jason step down the stairs being greeted by their A.I. Jarvis, who announced his presence to the center of the lab, which he thanked him for. Once he landed on the final step and stood underneath the doorframe his jaw dropped drastically.
“What the hell?!” He yelled seeing the sight.
There stood Tony Stark removing himself from a set of metal plates and holding a helmet in his hands, having DUMMY hold up a few more items for him. Next to the man in place was a human size action figure looking suit, in deep golden yellow and hot rod red.
The room was filled with metallic gray plates, tools left and right, a diagram model of suits and thrown out gloves. As well plenty of other things just landed across the lab.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tony looked up with a soft smile and shrug, “Let’s face it, this isn’t the worse thing you caught me doing.”
“What the hell are you doing?” He asked walking into the lab, his eyes wondering over to the suit looking very confused.
“I’m building a suit, isn’t it obvious?”
“Tony.”
“After everything that happened lately and seeing what my weapons have accomplished, I don’t like it. So I figured I’d do something about it.”
“And a iron suit is your answer? I’m sorry son, but I need a better explanation. Please.”
“This suit will help me save civilians and undo the damage I’ve caused. My weapons and the way the world is becoming, I think it needs a change. Help people..”
“A heroic path?”
“Yeah. Or that’s at least what I’m trying to do.”
“..okay.”
“Okay?”
“Is Jarvis in the suit? And it fully charged with sensors to brace for impact?”
Tony smirked and nodded.
Jason was scared out of his mind about this idea, fearing he might get himself hurt, but he knew he couldn’t stop him from doing this. The least he can do is make sure he was safe.
Little did he know that this would be the start of Iron Man becoming a new hero, his possible return to SHIELD with Agent Coulson showing up and his way to enforcing his placement back into the new world. He wasn’t ready for the new faces he would met along the way either.
Thanks for reading! What did you think?
Pls like, comment and reblog!
I could do a follow up with him being in Iron Man 2 and or Thor, which is where he meets Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis (+ a young Melissa Wallace) if you like? Whatever movie is up for grabs!
Excerpt:
Abbi pulled out the small clipboard from her pocket, flipped to the blank back of the package acceptance template, and wrote a message on it, sideways, in large block letters.
‘I AM NOT YOUR SOULMATE IF I HAVEN’T SAID YOUR WORDS!’
She held it up for when he turned around from scaring away her ride back to work. It took a little while, because unbelievably, the taxi driver was congratulating Stark on such a momentous occasion. Finally, he hit the top of the taxi with his Iron Man gauntlet and the woman drove away. A black SUV pulled up in its place almost immediately. As soon as he saw her holding up the clipboard, Stark came over to read it, standing too close for her comfort.
Abbi made the mistake of watching his face as he read. He’d walked over with an amused confidence, but a wall of defensiveness seemed to rise up in his expression and he looked her right in her eyes as soon as he finished reading.
“What, the giant tower and superhero suit didn’t go in the ‘Pros’ column?”
Tumblr media
Chapter One: Goddess Observed
When Abigail’s mother pressed her to find her soulmate, Abbi had no idea that she’d learn that there was an underground courier culture in New York City. Her job at Vail & Nysa was great, even though she’d always wanted to finish her law degree, but there would be time for that someday. For now, being a paralegal was close enough, and it had unexpectedly opened up a secondary opportunity.
Apparently, there were levels of being a courier. Abbi had thought that she’d end up picking up and dropping off things in lobbies here and there on her way to work and on her lunch break. But as soon as she walked into the downtown office of You Send Me, the receptionist took one look at her professional clothing and sent her upstairs. There wasn’t a receptionist there, just a clipboard with names that had been blacked out as they were seen, it looked like. Hoping this wasn’t a secret first step to a fifty-step process of earning a job at Google she didn’t intend on taking, Abbi wrote down Abigail Carson and sat down to wait with her hands in her lap. Work had been a half day anyway, so she had the time to find out what kind of mysterious chance she might be given.
It took almost a half hour. She (of course) didn’t check her watch, certain that that would be noticed. The longer she sat, the more Abbi was consumed with curiosity. As much as she could, though, she kept her green eyes trained on a spot on the wall in front of her, and tried not to touch the chignon her shoulder-length brown hair was styled into. Inside, her mind swirled with possibilities. Outside, she was the picture of a calm, collected young woman.
“Ms. Carson?” The speaker was an older woman garbed in rich purple and covered with jewelry. Sometimes Abbi really loved when New York City lived up to its mythos.
As it turned out, You Send Me had a higher-end courier business whose employees were hand-picked and mostly consisted of young women dressed as if for the boardroom or court. At its heart, Courier and Ives was, Mrs. Violet Walsingham told Abbi, a business trying to cater to companies who didn’t want a disruptive, enthusiastic young delivery person in street clothes bopping in to deliver something sensitive or vital in nature.
That was when Abbi asked point-blank if it was a disguised escort service. Mrs. Walsingham cackled and begged her to sign up, even if she only delivered packages once a week. She told Abbi that while yes, professional young women rarely had the chance to meet men outside their own office during work hours, and Courier and Ives did end up facilitating that sometimes, their reputation as a courier service was impeccable.
Abbi showed the woman her soulmark, confessed her reasons for applying, and was told she was exactly the kind of young woman they were looking for.
Her mother was full of delight when Abbi told her about what happened. Demi Carson had lived an adventurous life, and she was always encouraging Abbi to live hers to the fullest as much as possible. Their family vacations were always to as exotic a location as they could afford, the schedule packed with anything that looked unique and challenging. They hadn’t always felt safe but they’d always had a good story to tell later.
Secretly, Abbi had always wondered if her mom had married Atticus Carson because his name was unique. Her father had been dour but loving, and any fights she’d ever observed had stemmed from a conflict of personalities. That conflict was embodied in Abbi herself in many ways-- she was adventurous but economical, free-spirited as much as possible while still grounded in the here and now. If it was within her budget and didn’t risk her future, Abigail Carson liked taking a chance on something exciting.
Courier and Ives was right up her alley. She couldn’t wait to start.
Her biggest hope was that she’d run into her soulmate, who would be an up-and-coming executive type with a head for business and a heart for taking a few measured chances. Her biggest fear was that her soulmate would actually turn out to be a big-spender, big-risk type of guy whose lifestyle would fill her with the kind of dread she watched her father deal with when her mother was in one of her moods. Before they’d lost him to a heart attack, her father had told her he’d loved his life, and the only thing he would have changed was perhaps trying to temper his wife’s most grandiose tendencies. Abbi’s soulmark did imply that the speaker would be someone who wouldn’t ordinarily take deliveries, but she didn’t worry about that too much. If he was her soulmate, they were made for each other, and it would be worth it, just like her parents’ marriage was. They’d been soulmates too.
Tumblr media
By a month into the job, Abbi was starting to enjoy the excited rush she felt every time she walked up to a man to hand over a discreet package. Her soulmate words had turned a job that already let her observe various exclusive offices and meetings into an exciting chance at a new life! She got a message every few days, though today had been day four since her last one. When she stopped by on her lunch hour to pick it up, she was surprised to see that it was to Avengers Tower.
The re-named Stark Tower was a different kind of ‘exclusive’ than the expensive, chic office spaces that Courier and Ives women were often sent to. There wasn’t just a chance at running into a wealthy executive there, but also bona-fide superheroes. It was a plum job, and Abbi was the newest employee. She asked Mrs. Walsingham if there had been a mistake.
“No mistake, sweetheart! We accepted delivery of this item from a confidential source and it needs to be run over to the tower. You’re the only one with availability in the next hour. If Minthe Lawson gives you grief about it, you come to me, got it?” The kindly old lady gave Abbi a once-over. “That gold-colored suit is absolutely stunning. One of Stark’s favorite colors, I hear!”
Inwardly, Abbi winced. Anthony Stark was one person she would be happy to miss seeing-- as handsome as he was, the man was a walking PR disaster. Reportedly, he’d been building some kind of robot army after his girlfriend and CEO of his company had left him a few months ago. Just being an unfamiliar young woman in his general proximity would probably be enough to get his attention nowadays, or so the tabloids said, much less wearing his favorite color. Her mother had bought her the suit jacket and miniskirt set, and always loved seeing her wearing it for work. There were few opportunities where she could wear it, because paralegals were to be seen and not heard, at her firm (and she preferred it that way), but today was a celebration for a successful win of the case she’d been working on, and Abbi had made an exception. The skirt was shorter than she was used to, too.
Gritting her teeth, she left, hoping she’d get through Avengers Tower without running across its most famous resident. The object looked like a suitcase, but after the incident at Monaco Abbi knew that an object going to Stark Industries could be anything disguised as anything. Her credentials got her through the door just fine, and she was sent up to the 72nd floor to a conference room.
She tapped lightly on the door and it opened inward. Slowly, Abbi walked into the doorway, where she was faced with all of the Avengers, at least the ones she could recognize.
“Tony, a scared-looking delivery girl is here with the suitcase you had made for the scepter,” a man dressed all in black said. He smiled at her in a kindly sort of way, turning around to call for Stark again. On his back was an actual quiver full of arrows.
“Oh, that’s not necessary, I could probably give this to any one of you?” Abbi said desperately. She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out the card with the instructions. “Yes. Avengers or associated staff. I’ll just--” she turned to look for someone much more junior and less busy to hand the object off to.
“Found him,” the archer sing-songed.
Abbi stopped short. With a pasted-on smile, she turned around and was faced with Tony Stark. He was dressed in a band t-shirt and jeans, and he must have been laughing with one of the other people in the room before being called over, because his smile was bright, genuine, and devastating. Abbi had always thought he was handsome in magazine pictures, read articles that called him charismatic, but she’d never seen such clear evidence of the difference between a picture and a person before.
Tony Stark was magnetizing, and she’d only been around him for three seconds so far.
For his part, Stark seemed to find her interesting as well, which was disconcerting for Abbi. He leaned his head back and regarded her, the initial brilliant smile on his face morphing into an impressed, pleased look.
“I wonder where Violet keeps finding so many respectable young women,” he said under his breath. Then, over his shoulder to another man, he added, “You’d think she would run out, after a while.”
Abbi had been trained to be polite, gracious, even accommodating, but she felt objectified, and it made her actions a bit stiff. She held out the suitcase with a strained, silent smile. He gestured to the table beside him for her to set it down, his eyes narrowing just a touch in recognition of her attitude. Stark was a tech genius, yes, but he bucked their trend of being awkward and unskilled with women. He could tell she disapproved of him. Abbi felt her face flush at the subtle rebuke, and pulled out a small clipboard for his signature. Apologizing would just make things worse.
“You didn’t expect me to be the one to sign for this, did you?” he asked as he bent over the flat surface to scribble his signature.
Abbi’s grip on the clipboard failed on hearing her soulmark words. Her heart started pounding and she felt goosebumps rise on her arms. It was as if his words had loosened the cork that had been holding back all possible reactions to hearing her soulmate’s first words, and in a fluke of fate, she was feeling all of them at once. Horror, excitement, attraction, repulsion.
Stark reached out quickly to steady the clipboard with his other hand as he finished signing, looking up at her quizzically.
If fate had decreed her soulmate was Tony Stark and she apologized for letting go, those would be the words written on his body somewhere. But what if it was a coincidence? Surely that phrase had been spoken before and would be again? Abbi dipped her head in a silent goodbye, pressed her lips together in case she accidentally said something, and turned to go, moving quickly to escape the situation.
“Hey, Cleopatra in the gold suit! Gonna need this.”
She stopped a foot from the elevator button, and Stark walked over to hand her the clipboard, looking a bit regretful to give it back, for some reason. Abbi took it, pulling out the side of her jacket to tuck it into the inside pocket. She felt dizzy, almost like she was observing herself from the outside, and some of that must have shown on her face.
“You all right? Here,” he said, reaching out to tap the button for the elevator. “Look at me,” Stark commanded, and she let out a quick breath to steady herself before lifting her eyes to his. “Green!” he said with a slow, pleased smile. Abbi had to fight back a feeling of pride, as if it should matter whether this man liked the color of her eyes. “Well, Emerald Eyes, you seem to be experiencing Superhero Swoon, which is understandable after being confronted with a room full of them. I’m happy to offer a manful shoulder should you so require?”
Abbi shook her head right as the elevator doors opened, offering an apologetic smile as she scurried inside.
“No name, not even for the review?”
She shook her head again.
“Silent rabbit mode it is, then. I’ll just have to have something else delivered. Until next time!” Stark said with an impish grin just as the doors closed.
“Oh my God, that did not just happen. Please tell me that did not just happen!” Abbi said out loud to the empty elevator, groaning. “It was a fluke. That’s what it was. It only counts if I say his words back, and I am not going to, because there’s no way in hell that Tony Stark is my soulmate. Nope!” A voice in her head that sounded an awful lot like her mother’s pointed out that he was wealthy, handsome, and a certified genius, but most importantly, not in any way boring! Abbi had quite a lot of experience ignoring her mother’s voice in her head, however. Where most women heard their mother’s voice criticizing them, hers was like the impulsive devil on her shoulder.
It was practically inconceivable that someone of Stark’s stature would be unbonded at his age anyway. And he’d just broken up with his long-term girlfriend. The man had clearly not been concerned with finding his soulmate and hadn’t been for years. As far as Abbi was concerned, if she was his soulmate, he never had to find out. She left the elevator, nodded to the front desk person, and walked outside. Her plan was to call a taxi and never set foot in the tower again.
She raised a hand for a taxi and saw one that had been idling at the corner a block away put on its turn signal. The driver waved at her, and Abbi waved back.
Suddenly, Iron Man came flying down from the top of the tower, landing on one knee in front of her before straightening up. The faceplate flipped up to show Tony Stark.
“So, funny thing about the elevators in my tower. They’re run by my AI, JARVIS, who likes to pass on any pertinent information spoken in his presence.” Stark’s brown eyes were bright, hopeful, and fixed on her. His demeanor was placating, holding out one hand as if begging her to stay put.
Abbi almost told him she was sorry but there was probably a mistake. Then she realized that if there wasn’t a mistake, those would be the words written on his body. He deserved better than that. He deserved a fancy celebrity soulmate, not a young woman looking at turning thirty with half of the goals she’d made at twenty still unfulfilled! So she shook her head at him and pointed at the taxi that pulled up right then.
To her immense frustration, Stark leaned over, mimed rolling down a window, and told the taxi driver that he and his soulmate were having a one-sided conversation, and to move on.
Abbi pulled out the small clipboard from her pocket, flipped to the blank back of the package acceptance template, and wrote a message on it, sideways, in large block letters.
I AM NOT YOUR SOULMATE IF I HAVEN’T SAID YOUR WORDS!
She held it up for when he turned around from scaring away her ride back to work. It took a little while, because unbelievably, the taxi driver was congratulating Stark on such a momentous occasion. Finally, he hit the top of the taxi with his Iron Man gauntlet and the woman drove away. A black SUV pulled up in its place almost immediately. As soon as he saw her holding up the clipboard, Stark came over to read it, standing too close for her comfort.
Abbi made the mistake of watching his face as he read. He’d walked over with an amused confidence, but a wall of defensiveness seemed to rise up in his expression and he looked her right in her eyes as soon as he finished reading.
“What, the giant tower and superhero suit didn’t go in the ‘Pros’ column?”
Something inside her twisted up to hear the vulnerability in his tone. She ruthlessly suppressed them. This man wasn’t for her. It just wasn’t possible. Abbi tried to flip to a new page, but the one she’d just written on came loose. He stopped the small, square note card from flying away by stepping on it, then Stark leaned over and picked it up.
“Would you believe this thing doesn’t have pockets? Back to the drawing board,” he joked. It was impossible not to laugh. “Got you,” he said softly. Even as she was writing another message for him, Stark reached out and rested his gauntleted hand on the clipboard, then took it from her entirely. He glanced at what she’d started writing (‘I need to get back to work and you just took my ride!’) and nodded. “I called one of my guys, he’ll drive you wherever you want, and I made him promise not to tell me where, even.”
Abbi looked up at him in surprise. The vulnerability and defensiveness were still there, but there was stubborn amusement in his expression now, as well.
“You still need to be convinced,” he said. Abbi shook her head and looked at her watch. The office party would start in twenty minutes, and Stark looked like he had twenty minutes’ worth of arguing in him. “Listen,” he said, stepping even closer.
She crossed her arms to put a little distance between them, but the action emphasized the small bit of cleavage her blouse showed, and she saw him notice that. There was definitely a heat between them, but she was willing to ignore it. The man probably had heat with everyone, honestly.
Stark pointed between the two of them as he started speaking again. “You doubt this soulmate thing is real, but that doubt is a point in your favor. Do you know how many women would fake my words if they knew what they were? And here you are, you could say anything, and that’s what they’d be. Embrace the power, Iris.” He paused, clearly saw her brows furrowed in confusion, and added, “I don’t know if soulmate words change, but please don’t turn mine into a question about Greek mythology. Iris, female messenger to the Gods.” He grinned. “Feel free to say, ‘Does that mean you think you are a god?’ because that would be badass. I’d be happy to give up my current soulmark if that’s what the new one was.”
Abbi shook her head. She felt lightheaded again, but instead of dizziness, it was a kind of excited anticipation. He obviously was convinced they were soulmates, and despite herself, she was influenced by that a little bit. Her practicality won out, though. She was going to be late for work, and he was a billionaire. The sun was not destined to fall in love with a fluorescent lightbulb! Abbi stepped back from Stark, sighed, and walked over to the car.
He opened the door and ushered her in. “This is Happy Hogan, he’ll take you to work. Happy, we agreed you wouldn’t tell me anything she said, right?”
“Right,” the round-faced man in the front seat said.
“His AI monitors the car, doesn’t it?” Abbi asked Hogan.
“It sure does,” Hogan said, grinning at Stark.
“Traitor,” Stark said. He shifted his gaze to Abbi, and she could see admiration in it. “I like smart women. Even ones smart enough to want to stay far away from me.”
Before she could react to that, he stepped back, shut the door, and activated his suit, flying straight up and out of her line of sight.
“I wish I could re-do this entire day,” Abbi sighed, throwing her head back in the seat and closing her eyes tightly.
“I get that a lot,” Hogan said sympathetically. “Where can I drive you?”
“My mother used to always answer, ‘Crazy,’ but I think that’s the location I am currently leaving at the moment. How about the Solow Building?”
True to his word, Hogan delivered her to her workplace and didn’t even ask her name. His only concession to the strangeness of the situation was when he pulled up to the building and then turned to speak to her.
“I know you’ve got to make up your own mind, here, but I would be eternally grateful if you would just do one thing for me.”
Abbi eyed him warily. “What?”
“I’ve heard of soulmate words changing in very rare situations. I’ve seen his, so I know what you’re supposed to say, but if you could change them to, I don’t know, ‘Happy says you’re a good guy, so I guess we’re doing this’ or something like that--”
“Unlock the door?”
“Fair enough.”
The rest of Abbi’s day passed so normally that she managed to pretend that nothing had happened, right up until she walked in the door and saw her mom. She looked like she was having a good, calm day. Not the kind of day where she needed to stress out about something that momentous and world-changing. Abbi did her best to deflect questions, made them leftovers from the day before, and checked to be sure that her mom had taken all the pills she needed to before heading to her room to study up on the next case she’d be working on.
“Something happened today, didn’t it?”
Abbi looked up to see her mom in her doorway. “What makes you say that?” she asked, putting a bookmark in the tome she’d been reading.
“You usually relax when you come home. You take off the masks you had to wear to get through the day. Today, you’re still wearing them.”
“Something so bizarre happened today that I’m still processing it. I’ll tell you when I figure it out, okay?” Abbi confessed.
“Well, don’t wait too long. Clock’s ticking!” Demi Carson said, laying a dramatic wrist on her own forehead.
“You know, some mothers take a diagnosis like yours seriously, just saying,” Abbi laughed. Her mother had never taken anything seriously in her life, not if she could help it. That didn’t mean she was being irresponsible about it, just irreverent. It was equal parts frustrating and uplifting, depending on the day. The jury was out for how today was going to feel. They had a few weeks before the scan to see if her current treatment was effective. Even if it was, Abbi was grateful she’d moved back in to care for her, despite the rather dramatic role-reversals that happened between them sometimes.
“Some mothers never took their children out of the country. Some mothers haven’t even tried marijuana. Some mothers have the decency to move to the suburbs when they get old. I’m not some mothers.”
“You are not old, go to bed.”
“Yes, dear.”
Victoria was born into an extremely rich family. She was the oldest of three girls. Her mother, came from a previously wealthy family and was determined to marry a man whose family has had riches for generations as well. They had three beautiful girls all for show as neither of them knew how to express real love, not having been raised in particularly nice homes. So, Victoria, basically raised her sisters. They knew nothing other than each other, showing each other what real love was.
When her youngest sister Esme was eighteen, she contracted a deadly sickness. This made Victoria go crazy, searching for a way to cure her incurable disease. On the brink of her twenty fifth birthday, she stumbled across a man who claimed he could help cure supposed incurable sicknesses and diseases. Desperate, Victoria asked for his help. He told her that since Esme didn't come to him directly, he could only give Victoria the ability to help her sister. Without hesitation, she accepted his request. He brought her into a lab where she laid down on a cold, metal table for him to continue with the procedure. He injected her with a deep gold liquid in multiple spots on her body. Afterwards, he said that she would be able to help cure her sister within a week.
Having returned home, she promised Esme and her other sister that she would cure her. With no information on what she was supposed to do, Victoria wasn't sure if she would be able to help Esme so she went searching for that man again. Instead, all she found was a note that explained to her what he did to her. When the time came to help Esme, all backfired. Nothing happened to Esme and she passed a few days after Victoria tried to help.
Horrified, Victoria ran away from their home. She didn't know if she was the reason Esme died or not. A few days after she left home, a group found her. This group was called Special Threat Assessment for Known Extranormalities, also known as S.T.A.K.E. They took her in, interrogated her, and then decided they wanted her to become part of their team. They helped refine her powers as they thought it to be useful, taught her many, many kinds of martial arts, and how to use various kinds of weapons.
Over a few years, she had become a valuable member of S.T.A.K.E and then Nick Fury heard about her. Intrigued, he invited her to be a part of 'a group of remarkable people'. Victoria couldn't turn down the offer and that was how she became a part of the Avengers.
Timeless // Jas x Bucky (x)
Even if we'd met on a crowded street in 1944 And you were headed off to fight in the war You still would've been mine We would've been timeless I would've read your love letters every single night And prayed to God you'd be coming home all right And you would have been fine We would've been timeless 'Cause I believe that we were supposed to find this So even in a different life, you still would've been mine We would've been timeless
❝ There were very few people who knew that Poison Ivy, plant-themed seductress and long-time enemy of Gotham’s Caped Crusader, had a daughter. Born out of a one-night stand between her mother and low-level gang member, Elena had inherited her mother’s powers for plant and toxin manipulation, and Pamela Isley had been prepared to raise her daughter to be her little partner in crime, a twisted version of a mini-me to help her mother terrorize Gotham with their thorny and poisonous abilities.
But Elena hadn’t wanted that for herself. A sweet, shy girl with a tendency for kindness, she had wanted no part in her mother’s schemes against the Batman and Gotham’s innocents, and so had run away, searching for the one person she believed could help someone in her situation. She found the Batman and begged for his help, begged him to free her from her mother’s plans and show her how to be a good person like him… and she made this desperate plea at the ripe old age of six years old.
Bruce Wayne, hidden behind the imposing cowl of his iconic suit, had almost shed a tear at the sight of this sweet, tiny girl pleading for his help to get her out of a desperate situation. Knowing he could never put Elena into the foster system or have her adopted because of her powers, the billionaire vigilante had taken the daughter of one of his nemeses into his home and, later, his heart, raising her as his own, helping her learn to control her powers, and, eventually, teaching her to fight so she could fulfill her wish of joining him in taking down crime on Gotham’s streets. Over the years, Elena steadily wormed her way into Bruce’s walled-off heart, and he came to view her as his own daughter, never forgetting but not caring about her true origins.
Now, several years later, Elena roams the streets of Gotham at night alongside her adoptive father, taking down criminals in a beautiful green suit under the alias Persephone. But after the death of Superman, who was killed in a fight Bruce kept her away from, Elena sees strange aliens start to show up around her city, attracted by Earth’s newfound vulnerability. With a huge, deadly threat looming on the horizon, Bruce is forced to recruit new allies into a team to help him and his adoptive daughter take on the incoming alien army.
Now part of a team of amazing and imperfect heroes (including a very cute and very awkward speedster), Elena must prepare herself to finally find out if Bruce answered the plea she gave him all those years ago: to make her into a hero who is worthy to fight alongside him.
(And, possibly, to find out how much her flirting can make Barry blush before he passes out, but that is not her focus here. What? It’s not!) ❞
GLITCH CHAPTER UPDATE
Chapter 1:
“Because it’s part of the illusion. It’s the cruel, elaborate trick conjured by the weak to inspire fear,”
“A desperate play for control…” Freya mutters, but then she smiles and nudges Loki’s shoulder with her own “Hey, you do know yourself,”
“A villain,”
“That’s not how I see it,” Freys doesn’t notice that Mobius has entered until he speaks “You try to use that?” he gestures to the Tesseract.
“Oh, several times. Even an Infinity Stone is useless here,” Freya picks it up and inspects it “These cause a lot of problems…” she looks slightly sad “Lots of death, lots of variants,” “The TVA is formidable,”
“That’s been my experience,” Mobius smiles “Listen, I can’t offer you salvation, but maybe I can offer you something better,” Freya stands up and puts her hand out for Loki to take, and he does.
“A fugitive Variant’s been killing our Minutemen,” she explains
“And you need the God of Mischief to help you stop them?”
