The Future

Time to establish what's going to happen from this point forwards.

The vast majority of you have been exceptionally patient this last year, and for that you have my deepest thanks. You've given me the time to not only write a book, but edit it, and send it off to literary agents, something I would have long given up on doing without the continued support of those who enjoy my writing.

Now that the book is off doing the rounds independently, it's time I got back to Myrk Mire.

Originally Myrk Mire was built in ChoiceScript, a scripting language created by the Choice of Games company. Choice of Games control what is done with their script, understandably, they own it. This does pose some restrictions. I can't, for example, release any paid material built using ChoiceScript unless it is directly through their publishing label. If I do publish under their label, I maintain IP or Intellectual Property Rights, however I also grant them the exclusive rights under perpetual license to publish the multiple choice game 'electronically'.

As you can see from the outline above, they do make exceptions for stories published in non-competing formats, and for sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. However, traditional publishing houses might require stricter control over IP, distribution, and exclusivity. It will only become more and more complicated as things progress, and being locked into a perpetual license agreement of any nature is not a decision to make lightly.

As some of you may be sensing from the tone of all this so far, I'm going to be moving Myrk Mire away from Choice of Games and ChoiceScript, and into a new medium/format.

After tinkering, and trialling with a few alternatives, I've decided to go with Renpy. Renpy, while largely used for visual novel style games and stories, provides a very workable framework for interactive fiction, and is an Open Source script, it isn't beholden to publishing contracts, licence cost, or exclusivity.

I'm not going to be diving into transferring Myrk Mire right away, it's a huge piece of writing, in an entirely different scripting language, and as previously stated, there are a lot of changes I want to implement with the cast. Instead, I'm creating a trial story: One Háḟest Day. My Patrons have been aware of all this for about a month or so, and have already seen some previews.

One Háḟest Day takes place in Aldmirham before the events of Myrk Mire, around the time the Main Character and the Wanderers first arrived in town. The reader will have the choice to follow one of the romanceable characters through a single day, with opportunities to explore their lives and relationships before the Main Character and Child come along. I hope it will provide a proving ground for the changes that previously caused debate, and an opportunity for people to try out the new format and interface.

My plan is to distribute One Háḟest Day through Itch.io, working with their early access framework and voluntary payments for such as soon as one of the character routes is ready to play from beginning to end, updating regularly with the other characters as they too are completed, and with additional features as required. Once the full game is complete, I will release a separate full build with a set minimum price that can be discussed with the community as we move forwards.

At the second, I'm aiming for a web hosted format and a desktop/laptop downloadable format, with phone compatibility to come later down the line once things are stable.

I will post production updates and info when I can to tumblr, though a lot of what I'm doing now is very python coding heavy, so perhaps not that interesting?

I've included some screenshots below of very early development, featuring a Character Log and Word Log that I hope will allow readers to more easily navigate the story. I'm toying with the idea of having a Mysteries Log as well that will keep track of snippets of information gleaned from each character's route, but that can be a tinkering feature for now.

Just kidding. I had plans for a sequel for sure, hence the colon in college tennis: origin story (e.g. paving the way for other college tennis editions) but the more I think about it, the more I feel like a sequel where MC (and friends/ROs) are already in their mid 20s would be even more interesting.

I'd love to write a continuation where MC's already a pro tennis player on tour and maybe even having more slice-of-life elements (rent an apartment, sponsorship struggles etc.) Something like, Pro Tennis: Rising Star (idk I'm terrible at coming up with names).

Rayyan could be a rival (and teammate if they're competing for team USA), G would be a sports journalist(?), Sam would be a commentator + casual exhibition match player, with a successful vlog(?) on the side, Tobin would maybe be MC's profesh doubles partner (or maybe someone else's? Ooh drama 👀) or maybe training to be a coach?

And of course, everything in the WIP CLOSET I'd want to write one day, possibly even before I get around to CT:OS 2 (the fantasy elf izakaya/midnight diner + stardew valley-esque thing is something that has been knocking around my head for a long time, and same for the soccer game).

SIMS RELATED PROJECTS/UPDATES

My spring break is coming up in a week and holy crap do I have plans on plans on plans, especially since my summer is gonna be full of school + internship + HOPEFULLY friggin' graduating with a BA in Psychology so that I can start applying to grad schools.

GOAL 1: MASTER GSHADE/ReSHADE

I know that some people are sticklers for this but my thing is that I had no gee-dee clue what I was doing with ReShade, whereas Gshade just kinda clicked and worked for me? That said I have a bunch of resources for learning ReShade so I might end up moving back to it at some point.

My main issue is figuring out the order of all the different effects. It obviously matters, I'm sure people smarter than me have tried to use presets only to be like "why tf does this look absolutely nothing like the baller screenshots this one cool Simblr has?" Annnd it turns out it's order + remembering to turn off certain graphic settings. Also photoshop, but that's gonna take a lot longer for me to figure out lol.

Like I'd been struggling to figure out why @gunthermunch's gorgeous Lithium preset wasn't looking as sexy as it did before annnnd it's because I forgot to turn Edge Smoothing off when switching to it. Jesus wept at how dippy I am sometimes.

Eventually, what I would like to do is maybe make my own preset at some point? I would be kind enough to show the effect order too if I did so. But this requires so, so much more shader knowledge than I currently have.

FUN FACT: My first ever degree was in art, I even went to a very fancy and private art school (School of the Art Institute of Chicago if you're curious)- I dropped out after one semester because uhhh that shit is expensive. Ended up finishing my degree at a much cheaper location in MN. That said, my art was 100% analog and 2D, and it turns out it did not translate super well into trying my hand at graphic art.

It's funny because I've been gifted really neat stuff for graphic art (like a really nice Wacom tablet and Adobe subscriptions), like people just expected my mixed-media ass would know what to do with it. NOPE! But yeah, Sims is sort of my excuse to try my hand at this stuff again, especially since I have a bit more energy now that my soul is not regularly being drained out of my body by customer service and tech support jobs.

GOAL 2: GET CRACKIN' ON ANOTHER DOOR

This one is hard because I am only on Gen 2 of the Orsons and it's sort of hard to justify starting up another story while that one is less than 1/5 of the way done.

THAT SAID, I don't plan on posting Another Door until I have a decent chunk of it done. Since it's not a casual gameplay story nor a legacy challenge, I plan on editing the bajeez out of the screenshots for it, really honing in on the aesthetic. I want it to look and feel very different from my random legacy challenge.

Fortunately, this story has been fucking up my sleep schedule for *months* now and I have a lot of the writing for it done. The hard part is translating that into the Sims, making sure I get the right poses and stuff, maybe even learning how to make some super easy CC (like, posters and stuff), and stuff related to GOAL 1 above.

What I'm saying is that it's going to take a bit. But I'm super serious about sharing it because it's my obsession and honestly the first time a story of my own design has possessed me in literal years.

Also, I want to make sure I have a significant backlog of the Orsons before I start seriously simming for it, because I don't want to screw over my favorite little pixel babies. This legacy challenge is going to be the one, I have done so much to keep my save files to keep it safe from harm (ask me how many backups I have of the save files. JK don't, the number is frankly silly).

GOAL 3: START YET ANOTHER MASSIVE CC PURGE

Y'all, my CC folder for this game is honestly an embarrassment. I go so hard on CC shopping because this community is stupid-talented and I like giving my pixel babies nice things and cool looks. When I'm bored and not quite in the mood for gameplay, I just like making neat-looking sims that I do absolutely nothing with because I love fucking around in CAS.

I have built my own PCs since I was 17 years old, and when I first built COMPUTERMACHINE (current rig) back in the autumn of 2018, it was with the goal that it would run Sims 4 flawlessly no matter what I did to it. It's got ridiculous amounts of RAM, I religiously update parts for it. And to be fair, even with the current 6,907,907,890 TB of CC I have atm it runs better than Sims 3 ever had with a measly 50 GB of CC.

But for me, it comes down to finding all the stuff I wanna use. Making myself get rid of the stuff I don't wanna use. Straight up yeeting the CC that I thought was going to look incredible that uh, didn't deliver.

I do CAS CC purges about once a year but have literally never done it for Build & Buy stuff, because OMG some of this shit I've had since 2014. Like when Sims 4 first came out. YIKES. My CAS CC obsession is notable but it's honestly nothing compared to my Build & Buy. Even before For Rent made building lots slow af, my PC was starting to take a solid minute to switch to different buy categories.

It would take a long af time so I want to make sure I have a bunch of content in the queue before I do it. It's gonna be a whole ass thing and be so, so boring to do. So I'm putting it off for when I have a ton of time to do it. Like, oh, my entire Spring Break?

GOAL 4: MAKE A FRIGGIN' RESOURCES LIST ALREADY

This would obviously need to wait until after GOAL 3 is completed, but I wanna make sure the awesome creators whose stuff I use get credit, and that people know where they can grab neat stuff. It would include not only CC but mods, Gshade/ReShade presets, and maybe even lots and sims I've downloaded from the gallery?

(Since I am super anti-paywall and very unapologetic and rude about it, I will also share where one could perhaps get some of these CCs without paying some dip a Trenta Starbucks Unicorn Frappucino amount of $$$)

It's ambitious as hell because *gestures vaguely at GOAL 3* but it would make things like doing WCIF asks and lookbooks so much easier.

Somewhat relatedly, I wanna make a navigation post, especially once Another Door starts getting posted. That story is gonna be a bit huge with multiple arcs that take place over the course of like, 14 years. Plus once the Orsons get to the 4th+ generation, it would be easier to track things down.

IN CONCLUSION...

I have been having so much fun sharing my silly little Sim adventures on Tumblr, so much more than I ever thought I would! You all have been so great to me, and all of this stuff is sort of a way for me to repay that. Ever since I stopped being able to be artistically creative ever since a really nasty depressive spell in 2017, Sims has been my #1 artistic outlet. And having people who are even somewhat entertained by my pixels is incredibly motivating.

Basically, if you read all of this, DAMN would you have been a rad livejournal follower of mine circa 2007. On the seriousness, however, thank you all so much for being rad and encouraging and sweet. I promise to do you all, if not proud, then at the very least not disappointed.

So, I had a pretty interesting question pertaining to REARRANGED's sister series REALIGNED. I was asked if I could separate out the book into individual short stories instead of having them all collected under one name. If they were separate, I could tag each individually to make them easier to search for; they could be individually bookmarked for reader convenience; I could gift people stories that they've requested. With all of this in mind, I've split up the short stories into their own little booklets.

Vampire Sebastian and Werewolf Sam Notice (Future SDV Mods)

Hey, guys! Just wanted to say that right now, I'm currently working on a Werewolf Sam NPC Overhaul mod to fit with my Werewolf Sam Sprite!

I will definitely try to release his werewolf portraits before making this huge overhaul. But I just wanted to let you know that I'm in the middle of changing his dialogue. Then, I'll move on to custom heart events!

I've had this vision of Sam being a werewolf for the past year, so I'm excited to finally start working on it! And I'll definitely post pictures as I go.

Basically, I was thinking of also turning Kent and Vincent into werewolves to fit with the story. Sam is hiding out in Stardew Valley as a werewolf since most "humans" wouldn't understand him.

I plan to also add suspense and mystery to the mod.

Would they try to compromise (like, they can build a new house, and design it, but having external help), or would they go full in?

Imre: he understands why, he wants to create a new life away from his family too. Imre would want to construct it without help. He feels like the work will make the result so much more meaningful. Plus it gives him an excuse to pick up another hobby.

Nia: she likes her house. It’s cold and empty but it’s all she’s ever known. Better the devil you know. She would compromise, hire a contractor to build a new section of the house where she and mc can live. She thinks leaving her home would be like throwing herself out of a plane without a parachute and hates how weak that sounds.

Lorcan: he would jump at that idea. His grandmother’s house has never felt like his own and he can never return to his parents house. He would try to build it himself but fail miserably and so relent to having someone build it for them. Lowkey feel embarrassed that he couldn’t do it.

I'm so glad you like my art (❁´◡`❁)!

Let's see if I can explain the coloring books.... Vol 1 is European Historical fashions, it can be purchased as a physical book through Amazon (kdp is my current best option for self publishing) and as a downloadable pdf from Ko-fi. The pdf can then be printed in any way you like, on any paper. At the moment my Ko-fi also has an abridged (30 instead of 50) page pdf of the modern fashions which will feature in Vol 2.

Historical Fashions Vol.2 is finally published! Which means the next step is updating Ko-fi with a matching full pdf version, and maybe remove the abridged version... I haven't decided yet. Doing a bundle might be interesting, but I also might hold off until I have more to work with.

On the docket for future coloring book will either be Vol.3 (which should be global fashions) or I'll start on the sister-series of 'Fictional Fashions' (for the non-historical redesigns or for example the mermaids if I have enough of them to work with by then).

do you still think that you would do a sequel for college tennis?

I have so many ideas for IFs I want to write that I'm leaving for after CT:OS and Merry Crisis are done... but a sequel for CT:OS where they're all adults and MC's trying to rise through the ranks as a professional tennis player is definitely on my bucket list for life.

It all depends on whether I actually eventually make the jump to writing (officially) part time or full time (which depends on whether I think I could make it work financially), in terms of how quickly I can complete games/stories...

But tldr; I'd love to, the when and "definiteness" of it though... I couldn't say until I have a better idea of what I'm doing with my life around 2 years down the road (I've arbitrarily set this as a deadline because I think by then I'd have saved up a bit to go on at least a 1-year hiatus from my full time job, and have a good enougb gauge of the viability of supporting myself through various channels!)

A thing to add to the list of stuff I won’t have to worry about for about 10 years or so, but I do. What will my kids call me when I have them. Will I go with mom or dad or maybe both. I’m not really sure, like I’m not openly gender-fluid in the way some people are, mostly people don’t know but I don’t really hide it, I might be when I’m in my late 20s early 30s though. Could also depend on who I marry, if I marry a woman I might go with dad, if I marry a man I might go with mom. If I marry a non binary person I flip a coin. Another person who identifies as both male and female, we’re having a duel to figure it out.

Actually yes! I had to step away from my online art projects for a while due to my job obligations, but I've switched to a new job and have way more free to finish all the stuff I've been putting off.

My current schedule for finishing projects looks like this:

The Homunculus: I've actually been writing a full length fantasy novel that I'm in the process of publishing! Since it was started as writing practice, it's still very rough and I am polishing it up.

Red Lotus AU: Obviously I'm on a writing kick and I literally just re-read my fic and I'm already working on new ideas for the plot.

More Paper craft robots: I literally cannot stop making these little guys. They are actually for a homebrew table top I've been working on based on Armored Core 6 and after some play-testing I was thinking about publishing a PDF of the rules for free. Plus once I've edited the paper craft files enough I was planning on selling those online for like, a dollar or two for people who want to try making their own at home, and even opening commissions to build custom robots for people and shipping them through the mail.

Patreon Card game: I'm in the process of shutting down my old Patreon since I no longer feel comfortable asking for money since art is not my full time job. But I want to deliver on the card game I promised. I recently got into the Pokemon TCG and Magic the gather again, and I have a whole slew of ideas on how to fix the game and streamline it.

Rapid Pixel Art and Tara and Kevin: My children... I have abandoned my children... I intend to bring these guys back and actually tell their story. I have both of their plots fully written I just actually gotta... Do it ya know?

Mother's Favorite Sequel: Yeah the sequel is already in the works since I am insane. It's a murder mystery aboard a space ship where you have to interview the crew and figure out what happened. It follows a new protagonist but it slowly reveals how the two games intersect in horrifying ways. Imagine that episode of Firefly where they find the ship attacked by Reavers crossed with John Carpenter's The Thing and you've got a good idea of what I'm going for.

I've been dealing with ADHD my whole life but finally got an official diagnosis and new medication. It literally feels like an anime where I take of my limiters and I can suddenly use my full power.

I have all the same manic energy but finally enough focus to actually follow through on projects I started. I used to just start stuff cuz it interested me until I got bored and moved on.

No longer says I! I am gonna out in the work and finish what I started. I am going for the platinum medal and 100% completion this time.
