Baela Targaryen

Young/child Baela. Daughter of Daemon and Laena Velaryon, rider of the dragon Moondancer. Baela is our "tomboy" of this show, she takes after Daemon's recklessness and is a direct contrast to her younger twin sister. I wanted to draw Baela in her dragon-riding outfit, but to have references to her mother and grandmother's fashion. The diagonal lines, the sea shell inspired gem and the wave motifs.

Laena Velaryon

Years later, after Laena has married Daemon and mothered their twins, Laena tries to get Daemon to move back to Westeros. Their family lives in Pentos, and Laena still wears styles emulating her mother's first design, but now in more gold than teal. She still needs all the pearls and giant gemstones of course, an icon wherever she goes.

My friend and I have talked a few times about how the show has such interesting characters who are absolutely squashed by the time-skip pacing of the first season. Laena is this amazing Dragonrider, has three fantastic actresses portraying her...and the narrative kills her off so fast we've got whiplash. The narrative is so keen on squeezing 20 years of backstory into 10 episodes to set up S2 that Laena is killed off almost immediately (very violently and tragically by the way) so that Daemon and Rhaenyra can finally get married. I would say Harwin Strong suffers a similarly foot-note style death, because the love interests are disposable. The show skips years and years over and over again to catch the "plot" relevant details of only a handful of character's lives so the majority of the cast practically live off screen and die when the history books says it was time for the main characters to be single again. Sorry for the tangent, RIP Laena.

Rhaenyra’s first wedding dress

Rhaenyra marries Laenor Velayron, after a convoluted tangle of romantic relationships and seething resentment. The bride and her groom sort of treat it as a laugh, having come to a congenial agreement, so the show picks a virgin-white gown (I know medieval wedding gowns weren't white this is about modern audience symbolism) almost to spite the dramatics that brought the pair to this point. I think that was rather fun so I kept the color scheme, added more Byzantine fashion references and a heavy jeweled necklace. (If I dislike something most about the show's choices for this wedding it's the hairstyle. No contest. I know it's probably supposed to be a precursor to Cersei's S1 hairstyles, but it just looks hilarious and unbalanced, like it's going to slide right off her head.) This is also the only time I've drawn Rhaenyra wearing an 'Alicent-style' crown at this half-joke wedding. Alicent's styles have gained some prominence in the years since she's become Queen and the Hightower block can push the Medieval-Westerosi options instead of Byzantine-Targaryen fashions.

Alicent Hightower, Little Miss Greensleeves

At the wedding of Rhaenyra and Laenor Valeryon Alicent makes a dramatic entrance in a brilliant green gown. A declaration for House Hightower instead of the reds and blacks she used to wear for her husband's House. I know some people love this show-dress but I can't get behind it. It looks too flimsy to be a Queen's show-stopping ensemble. It needed length, or folds of fabric... even just better lining in the bodice would have helped. It's honestly looked better in the cosplays I've seen.

I will give it to the show designers though, it is a hard gown to design. I completed this illustration at least 3 times before I knew for certain what it was going to look like. Hopefully the elements of Hightower fashion/anti-Targaryen fashion i've been mentioning and building to are recognizable.

Can we color the outfits in the coloring book like outfits on the back of the coloring book or is that cheating?

Of course! Color the pages in however you’d like. I recently finished one of the early 1910s ladies in a familiar way. Some things can just be cute, or feel right, there’s always other pages to experiment with. A coloring book is designed for relaxing and having fun, so have lots of fun! <3

Young Laena Velaryon

Teal and gold are exactly what we are looking for in Laena's design. And pearls, lots and lots of pearls. Her design is also directly related to Rhaenys with the over the shoulder wrap-dress design, but with a shorter puff sleeve under the long over-sleeve. The over-sleeve design was one of my ways of sneaking some of the precursors to fashion elements that Daenerys eventually wears in my GoT redesigns. Can you imagine her entering the wedding venue for Rhaenyra's wedding to Laenor in this? Subtly matching with elements of her families fashion and perfectly encapsulating how rich and powerful the Velaryons are.

Alicent in Reds

In the show Alicent spends her first few years as a dutiful and generous wife. Standing up for Rhaenyra, not pushing for Viserys to change the order of inheritance, wearing Targaryen colors and having Targaryen children. She isn't necessarily happy with her fate but is putting in the effort to get along. Ergo, we see her wear a lot of red and black during this time. I also wanted to have the lines and shapes of the ensemble match with things Rhaenyra has worn in the past to try to push the idea of family unity.

The more I look into the costumes of the show the more I can see little bits where the costumes tried to do some character+world development but the fabric choices undermine them every step of the way. Especially that black "leather" dress with gauzy sleeves. The idea is good but the result looks comical in it's environment.

I'm very happy to see you posting again (I don't know if you actually took a break or if Tumblr stopped pushing your posts on my dash) and very excited to your take on Alicent’s debut green dress and Rhaenyra’s wedding dress can't waaaait

Hopefully you like what I’ve come up with! I don’t think I took too much of a break despite probably needing one XD. Oh well, this just means you maybe have some ASOIAF guys to catch up on. I’ve been so HotD focused for the last few weeks for this series that it feels like forever ago that I was drawing anything else. We’ll see how sporadically I post in May ;) that will be a good indicator of a break.

Alicent's wedding dress

In the tv show we don't get to see Alicent's wedding. But at one point it was supposed to feature in an episode so we have behind the scenes content for it all the same. And I hate to say it, but it's not my cup of tea. The crown is interesting, but matches nothing any other major character wears. Where did it come from? Why? There are no answers. Why don't we see other Targaryen's have little shoulder wings? Because it looks silly? Yeah. So how could I resist trying my hand at designing her wedding dress? And I'll say it again, these are not easy costumes to design, I went back and forth over my options for a whole bunch of these over and over again. Maybe I'll figure out how to share the rejected designs I labored over at some point.

One of the things I am trying to emphasize is the sleeve differences. Alicent moves between the tear-drop shaped sleeves (like the ones here and in her first childhood friend dress, for her Targaryen-alliance outfits to match Rhaenyra) and what I'm going to call 'mushroom shaped' sleeves where the puff is at the shoulder and is tight from the elbow to wrist (anti/opposite Targaryen style). We should also see that in her necklaces. A lot of the Targaryen ladies wear thick gold choker-adjacent necklaces for the Byzantine collar effect. Alicent doesn't wear that kind of jewelry very often and this is one of the most Targaryen style-aligned necklaces that she wears. Also while her headdress is based on Byzantine fashion the crown is much more Northern-Europe Medieval than Byzantine. A little melding of fashion, hints at the opposing sides again.

Rhaenyra is officially Heir

I almost was not going to redesign Rhaenyra's official Heir ceremony costume from the show, because I kind of like that one. If the cloak fabric didn’t wrinkle so under its own weight it might have been perfect.

While redesigning it I decided the thing to do was to push the Byzantine inspiration even farther. The shape, the mantle, and the crown with strings of pearls. Before you ask: yes, this took a solid amount of time to do with all those details in there. I wanted to use richer golds, loads more gems, and huge amounts of expensive fabric for this very formal, very important occasion. The crown even has a little dragon on it.

Alicent wears her mother’s dress

As someone who held off watching the show properly for a long time, I thought that the dress that Otto Hightower convinces her to wear for Viserys was the green dress. Imagine my surprise when I was listing all the costumes/plot points to redesign that the seduction dress is the "blue-ladder dress". Curveball for the ages. (It's also what happens when only two actors are portraying an almost 20 year time jump over the course of a season.)

When I saw the Blue ladder dress for the first time I nearly laughed. The bodice pattern and the fabric catch the light in a pretty way but the peak-a-boo cut-outs make it a strange modern hybrid that really needed something between the skin and the blue gown. I can see the slashing inspiration but it's just another choice that highlights the lack of chemises and rich layers of fabrics. And we want rich, luxurious fabrics and draping that really highlights what the height of Targaryen power looks like. So... here we are. I kept the blue so the actual Green Dress can stand out later as a bigger change, and I tried to imply that this was a less-Targaryen (Byzantine) inspired fashion. The cut, silhouette, and shape is different. Hopefully creating a visual contrast that Alicent can find ways to replicate later in the season as well.
