Needles in a Haystack: Finding Creators to Bid On

It's that time of the auction again: fewer than 36 hours remain to bid!

We've got a truly enormous number of auctions this year – and that is almost entirely great! But it does have one unfortunate side effect, which is that figuring out who to bid on is actually a lot harder. In the past we’ve gotten a lot of notes – a lot of notes – from bidders who were hoping to use the auction as a way to connect with creators in their fandoms whose work they don’t yet know. But with more than 800 offerings in over 400 fandoms, tracking those people down is a huge task, even with all the wonderful roundup posts you all have been making. That’s why we’ve come up with a way to help you do it. We have tagged all of our less-active auctions so that it will be easier for you to find and connect with these brilliant, creative folks and avail yourself of their talents. The tag we are using is “golden needle”; because finding them on the offerings blog is like looking for a needle in a haystack (or at least it would be, without the tag!) and because each of them is a treasure whose participation enriches the whole project. And there’s another reason to peruse the golden needle tag, once we have it up and running: if you are interested in bidding on a creator but don’t have a lot of money to spare, this is a great way for you to connect with a fellow-fan, to get the fanwork of your dreams, and to participate in this awesome multi-fandom venture without putting yourself on a ramen-only diet for the next month. You can find the golden needles using this tag (which is also in our tags list, and which can be cross-indexed with our other tags for fandom, fanwork type, etc. to narrow your search.)

Cost is $5 or more donation to any of the FTH organizations for 2023!  Please make sure that the donation amount is legible & that you redact your personal info. An email address is required so we can send you the link to the book!

Hey Overwatch fans, don’t you wish there were more Overwatch fanworks? Is there a specific Overwatch artist you love, or a fic you wish you could ask someone else to write? Wouldn’t it be cool to raise money for progressive causes along the way? If you think so, please consider getting involved in the Fandom Trumps Hate auction!

FTH is an online auction of fanworks, with the proceeds going to small, progressive nonprofits that are working to protect marginalized people. FTH was begun in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 Presidential Election, and over the course of the last 6 years has raised over $192,000 for a range of amazing organizations.

Fans can offer fic, art, videos, podfic, or a variety of fan labor (for example, I've offered beta services in the past). Then other fans get to bid on the works or services they want. The highest bidder gets their fanwork of choice and a donation to a charitable organization.

Creator sign-ups begin February 6, 2023, and the auction opens for bidding on March 1st. In the past, Overwatch had a good showing, but it's dwindled in recent years. With Overwatch 2 reinvigorating fandom, I'd love to see us show up for this cause again! So please help me spread the word. <3

Erica sets Stiles up on a blind date but the mysterious beau never shows up. Butthurt about it and definitely insecure about himself; Stiles absolutely refuses to talk to the infamous Derek Hale when they meet by chance at a party some time later. They keep running into each other afterwards, and it slowly becomes clear that Derek never meant to hurt Stiles' feelings. He simply needs to deal with his own issues, namely: his older sister moving out of their family home to start a life with her partner, the suspicious Lydia Martin. Here is my Fandom Trumps Hate gift for @annanother-thing, an exploration of Sirius Black's friendships with the women in his life, particularly Lily Evans and Marlene McKinnon, with a side of brotherly angst.

Hint: the brotherly angst has something to do with the canon-divergent tag. There is also background dorlene, who are a married couple well-established as prime war targets in their late forties.

A nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy climate change organization focused on national policies to address climate change; trains and supports volunteers to build relationships with elected officials, the media and their local community.

Works to ensure that every person, everywhere enjoys their human right to water. All people should have access to a sufficient quantity of safe, accessible, affordable water of good quality, and that they should understand and care for their water resources.

National Network to End Domestic Violence *

Xerces *

An international nonprofit organization that protects the natural world through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitats. Focuses on pollinator conservation, endangered species conservation, and reducing pesticide use and impacts.

Umbrella: Abortion Funds

For the past three years, FTH has supported one “umbrella” cause: we invite participants to donate to their own local grassroots organization, while also suggesting a handful of exemplary organizations working in in communities where the need is especially acute. This year (like last year) this umbrella category is abortion funds.

Abortion funds are grassroots nonprofits dedicated to supporting reproductive justice in their communities. These organizations provide financial, logistical and emotional support for people seeking abortions, and work to build collective power to create political and cultural change around reproductive freedom.

Our 2023 selections for the umbrella group was compiled with assistance from Kiki, a digital engagement manager for an abortion support nonprofit and the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the (now-defunct) site The Learned Fangirl.
