What’s bewildering about Dobby is that he doesn’t even have a good villain origin story for why he’s such an ass. It’s not like Dobdad and Donmom abused him (he would absolutely have used that in arguments if they did). The most we have is that he got bullied in school, but plenty of people get bullied and they turn out fine. I feel like there’s a canon event somewhere we don’t know about that explains why he is how he is that we simply don’t know.

Whenever people speculate on why Dobson is the way he is or try and figure him out, I always remember this one quote from a stand-up special I saw:

in responce to your recent reblog of that post about what to do if you see a fae, i know you gave a short summary of what you would think is best, but do you have anymore thoughts on the best things to do? i was also wondering what you would say is the best thing to look for to identify that it is a fae in front of you and not something else. idk if that would be a worry since I haven't really looked into it at all

it depends on the fae! much like w bear sightings in nature the ideal is to avoid them. don’t step in their circles or wander off the path alone. buddy system! traditional folklore suggests carrying a bit of salt in one pocket and a bit of bread in another. the salt can be used as a ward, the bread can be used as an offering. (keep the salt in your pocket don’t go flinging it at them, it’s not the fuckin exorcist).

after that it depends on the type of fae, much like it depends on the type of bear. if you play dead when you should be shouting, it’s not great. announcing your presence and intent is a good first step; “i am a hiker looking to pass through here without interference. i mean no harm or disrespect.” wait for a response or reaction. if they seem sort of neutral/amenable you can walk around/past them. keep them in your line of sight as much as possible until you’re far enough away. if they seem more suspicious you can back away (again, not turning your back on them til you’re pretty far away). this could also be the time to Deploy The Bread (put it in the ground and back away). but if they’re outright hostile to you, you’re kinda fucked. same as if a bear really wants to kill you, you’re fucked. but also like bears, most fae aren’t all that interested in killing humans. if you’re chill, they’re chill.

as for identifying the fae it’s sorta like asking what an animal looks like. there’s a lot of animals! they look all sorts of ways! for example, the two things below are both “fae”. in general you can identify them by their weird/wrongness. a wild horse is a wild horse but if that horse also has horizontal pupils, a dripping mane, and weird hooves, it might be a kelpie (don’t touch).

but yeah don’t run. they can outrun you. easily.
