Reasons why I don’t really ship Reylo anymore.

I know that is how I got followers a few years ago but here are my reasons in a randomized bulleted list: 

The hate from other star wars fans.

Most of the Reylo’s from tumblr left during the porn ban and went to twitter where they really showed off their toxicity. 

I stayed on Reylo twitter for too long and the toxicity ruined it for me. 

I lost interest in Star Wars.

Everyone was into dark fics and I was not. 

Some shippers hate Rey -- Why are you hating the other half of your ship wtf?

Some members of the fandom are ultra mega conservative and brought up their politics all the time. Then they complained about losing followers. Like bro look at yourself for a sec. 

It’s an overglorified Adam Driver fandom.

Got very annoying after TROS. Yeah that movie is bad but not unwatachable. 

Refused to admit characters are dead. 

Didn’t want Rey to move on. Like have you ever met a widow or something? Let her move on. 

The fandom got way too big too fast.

Got too mad about antis. I am unfortunately guilty of this. Sorry to those who saw it. 

Said the torture scene in TFA didn’t have rapey undertones. Yes, it does. I joined the fandom after TLJ and refused to read anything involving that scene and interpreting it as romantic. 

The throne room scene being a metaphor for sex. What? It’s just a cool fight scene calm down. 

I found the Ben Swolo scene funny and I got hate for it.

The same “hot takes” were repeated over and over again. 

Getting outraged over the clearly fake Reylo bathroom story. 

I may think of more later but yeah. I’m going to stay in my own Reylo bubble and ignore everything else. If you followed me after I left the fandom I’m sorry to put this on your dash.

So, not only did we get published novels but apparently we’re getting screen and TV adaptations of former Reylo fan fics now… The fact that romance will have a comeback thanks (dare I say SOLELY) to the endless enthusiasm and creativity of this fandom is so deeply satisfying and vindicating. We have truly come full circle. This is how we win.

Eternally grateful for Daisy and Adam. Their amazing undeniable chemistry started it all!

It’s a little bit frustrating when somebody says I hate colonizer romance I can never be sure if they’re talking about stuff like Miss Saigon and Disney’s Pocahontas or if they’re upset over something Reylo or Zutara inspired. Sometimes they mean the former which I’m fine with. But a lot of times fandom wank means they are talking about the latter. I know I must be wary of the former especially when it comes to dumbass racist writers thinking they can write a KKK romances but it becomes harder to do with fandom shit.

The ultimate book / story to mourn the catastrophe of the end of Reylo...

Two other bonus :

Even if LBFAD doesn't address the light / darkness aspect directly... Through the way the characters are written ; I mean, Dongfang Qingcang = Kylo Ben to death. They both killed their father for essentially the same reason ! And Rey and Orchid are both in the same situation of not knowing who they are and no one knows who they are either. Girls without a home and family, and who would really want have that, who don't know who they are and think that basically they are nothing, and who are alone. There's also the color coding of the guy and the girl, the girl's powers generally linked to healing, not to mention the mystical connection of the two characters which essentially allows them to resurrect each other at the end. Then obviously, they are in enemy clans. He is from the tribe of the moon, and she, from that of the celestial. Then we discover that she is in fact the reincarnation of the former leader of another clan, which the Moon Tribe once decimated, so she is the equivalent of the goddess of nature. So in short, the heroine was nobody, but then discovers her true identity which further reinforces the supposed enemy aspect between the two characters. Like Rey when she discovers (unfortunately) that she is Palpatine's granddaughter. Without forgetting that the heroine's primordial form at the beginning is an orchid, that's her name, and you are well aware that an orchid is a plant that needs sunlight. Something said in the series itself, and where we see Dongfang Qingcang taking care of Orchid by making her be in contact with sunlight as much as possible. Not to mention that fairies are often symbolically associated with light in our culture. And even if Orchid is ultimately not a fairy, she thinks she is for the majority of the series and is designated as such by the title. Yes. No doubt. It's Reylo pure and simple.

Results for round 9 have just come in!

This time 2,530 votes were cast, more than ever before. With only 5 options this time, Ob1-Wan's lead rose to 33.2%. In my observations while the poll was active, Cass1an took an early lead for 2nd while Ben and Hu/x were the bottom 2, but it was fairly close between all 4 potential runner-ups for a while. At one point, Ben dropped below Hu/x. But as the hours went by, the rats gradually came in to show their support and the gap between Hu/x and the others widened. In the final hour, Ben surpassed Cass1an by just .3% to secure 2nd place with 18.7% of the vote.

Meanwhile, Hu/x, who struggled in earlier rounds but managed to survive this long due to the dedication of his stans campaigning for him, has finally been defeated.

Round 10 has just begun and with Hu/x now eliminated there's a few different ways this could go.

Some Hu/x stans will probably not vote in the next round now that their fav is gone, but I think some Kylux3rs might give their vote to Ben. Ging3rP1lot shippers will probably give theirs to Po3. Cass1an's had his ups and downs, at one point being up for elimination, but even then he seems to have always had pretty steady support, especially with fewer and fewer candidates splitting the vote. In general, Kylo/Ben is known to be very popular, but polarizing, while people who like Po3 and Cass1an might not be so picky about either one. So Ben might benefit in this round from Kylux3rs no longer being split between him and Hu/x while votes for Po3 and Cass1an might be split between actual stans and people who will vote for whoever they think stands a better chance of defeating Ben.

Regardless of whether we have the support of former Hu/x voters, I know we can always count on Reylos to turn out for our boy Ben. So get to the polls and let's body the competition like our Supreme Leader bodied this dude.

Okay, y'all. Let's talk about shipping, and I'll even expose myself, fuck it, let's go:

I don't ship or like Reylo or Dramione, and yet I am a slut for Anidala and Buffy/Angel, who are easily just as Problematique when you unpack all of canon

I don't ship or like SessRin, and yet one of my favorite "love stories" of all time is low-key the most Grooming one of all: The Phantom of the Opera

I don't ship or like InuCest, Kaname/Yuki, Elsanna, let alone incest pairings as a whole, and yet one of my favorite manga of all time is Angel Sanctuary. AND I also ship Cesare/Lucrezia!! (both in the TV show The Borgias, and the manga, Cantarella)

I generally don't do cross-species/monsterfucking ships, and yet. Ancient Magus Bride exists. Beauty and the Beast exists. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I generally dislike Adult x Minor pairings, and yet CLAMP's Chobits has one of the cutest side pairings that is incredibly fucked up in the real-world setting (Ueda x Yumi; ikyk). But then again, CLAMP created another Large-Age-Gap pairing in Cardcaptor Sakura that I absolutely DESPISE (Rika x Terada ugh), and yet, in the SAME SERIES ALSO wrote one of the most Wholesome Ships Imaginable (Sakura x Syaoran) AND one of the earliest examples of an Iconic Gay Pairing (Touya x Yukito)

Hell, despite my issues with Large-Age-Gaps, I have a soft spot for Amu/Ikuto from Shugo Chara!, and Nephrite/Naru from Sailor Moon. And yet, I'm squicked the FUCK out of Snape/Harry, Snape/Hermione, etc. Nope. Not my thing

I'm also generally not a fan of the "Male Love Interest consciously/openly threatening to harm/kidnap/assault Female MC" trope and yet!! My biggest guilty pleasure is Alice in the Country of Hearts!! Not to mention several other manga/anime titles I could name!! It's a common trope that I like in some stories, and hate in others!!!!!! Shocking!!!

My point is, you can dislike certain "problematic" ships/media all you like, but don't cast stones in glass houses. We all have our Problematic Faves, peeps, whether you want to admit it or not. Just because You Like It doesn't make it morally exempt from the ones You Don't Like. Ship and let ship, don't like don't read, learn to curate your fandom experience.

And honestly? As a former Puritanical Anti, embracing my trash without needing to justify it (however tame it is by comparison to some, or weird it is to others) has been the most liberating thing in my fandom experience. Give it a try; I highly recommend.

Finnrey! I ship the Bffs while I Reylo. TROS

When starting this post I was very curious as to what happened between FinnRey between The Last Jedi and TROS. I had to do some research into the books that were released during that gap.

I didn't like TROS, but one aspect I did like was seeing FinnRey again and the scenes they did receive warmed my heart. Now.....

Dear John Boyega - I'm not sure what you were promised, I wasn't there for pre-production conversations and I know you were a huge fan of Star Wars - however, this was never your story. This was the Skywalker + Rey story. Reylo was planned from the outset so it wasn't that. Yes, you were the first main black cast member of a SW film, it doesn't mean you were the most important character though.

Yes, Adam Driver is tall, dark, handsome and white... his character is also the son of Han and Leia, a Prince, he's the grandson of Anakin and Padme, the villain AND Luke's nephew and former padawan. Adam Driver is also a helluva actor. From a purely story wise perspective..... he's pretty damn important. No, you didn't sidelined due to him.

I also agree with Jason Fry, he got a fully developed story in The Last Jedi. TROS let everybody down. Ben solo was screwed, Rey was partially developed then screwed, Rose (thankfully) was in two minutes, Leia (unfortunately) was limited, Poe was meh, Hux was replaced then pointlessly murdered, R2D2 was limited..... so calm down.

In the year between TLJ and TROS, The novel Resistance Reborn gives us the biggest clues into their relationship during this time, despite Rey being a side character. It's very clear from Poe and Rose that they find Rey difficult to get to know. Rose comments that she find Rey someone who seems like she's both in the present and just beyond it. Poe attempts to bond with Rey through banter about flying skills, ships or being a Jedi which Rey find mostly annoying. Rey is friendly and she's a dedicated student of the Force, but it's clear she only really has a bond with Chewie, BB8, her master Leia and of course Finn. There's a conversation between Poe and Finn aboard the Falcon regarding his relationship with Rey.

Poe: "So the two of you aren't..."

Finn: "No, nothing like that. Just friends."

Rey and Kylo are both strong in the Force, they are the light and dark sides of the same coin, but FinnRey is made of the same noble cloth. While I Reylo, I'm glad Rey was able to receive such pure friendship and love from Finn. Finn is someone she can connect to especially as she grows more distant from everyone else as a mere byproduct of fate. Finn is so excited that Rey exists, the moment he meets her he has someone he loves to fight for. Over a short time that love grows bigger than his fear of what he fled.

TROS Scenes

In the movie, it's made clear that mainly Rey is training while Finn goes out on missions with Poe or Rose. While this frustrates Poe, Finn calmy agrees that they would use her. I disagree with this. While practically speaking, Finn and Rey's strengths and weaknesses complement each other, the best thing she could be doing is training.

When it's revealed that Palpatine has return (eyeroll) Rey decides to head to the desert of Pasaana to find the Sith Way finder to Exegol. While preparing to depart Rey finds that Finn, Poe, Chewie and BB8 are heading out with her. Good. FinnRey are a shockingly good team, a fact they discover within just a few minutes of meeting each other. Plus, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley are brimming with BFF energy that audience enjoys watching.

It's also great to see Finn evolve into a character more centered into himself so much so that he's the more moderating character that bind the trio of Poe, Rey, and himself together. Finn is the only character that has strong connections to everyone on screen.

There definitely seems to be an attempt to not separate Finn from Rey or vice verse but make sure his arc is balanced while still being her confidante. They don't necessarily have many moment in Pasaana where you get a sense of their mutuality. Daisy Ridley commented on the new dynamic.

"The thing for me that was always really exciting is I never felt like there was a specified sort of love that we were portraying. So the relationship between Finn, Rey and Poe in this one, I felt amazing. It's friendship, it's family, and it's just a lovely sort of thing," she shared. "I also think that's nice in a film way to not necessarily have an overt 'This is friendship. This is love.' It's just all a beautiful collection of people."

Now comes the moment when they thought they were going to perish in the sinking sands of Pasaana. Finn starts to confess something to Rey, but he only gets as far as “Rey, I never told you—” before being swallowed up by quicksand. Everyone debated what was he going to tell her. One might reasonably assume—as a significant portion of The Rise of Skywalker’s audience did—that Finn was going to tell Rey he loves her. Abrams declared that what Finn wanted to tell Rey is that he was Force-sensitive. Even after they obviously survive he still won't confide in her just yet cause Poe is this there I guess. Are you for real? Why is this played like some kind of mysterious I've waiting to tell you kind of thing? It's been obvious for two movies - now three movie - can we get this show on the road? Besides, Rey already knows he's force-sensitve.

I think more importantly - this was a missed opportunity to show Rey be there for Finn. Finn could've been developed to show how he feels about anything and Rey could've been there to emotionally support him. When they are safe underground she does ask what he was going to tell her, he's uncomfortable telling her with Poe there - still, this moment needed to have happened.

Now there are some great moments of Finn just checking on Rey or being aware of her safety. When she walks out into desert it's because both she knows Kylo Ren is coming, when Finn realizes this he goes to join her.

There real moment of glory is after she thinks she kills Chewie in a moment of tug-o-war with Kylo Ren. Lightning came out her fingers, shocking her and everyone else. Finn is wonderful in this scene. Showing compassion for where she was at emotionally. Not only did he seek her out alone to reassure her that what had happened wasn't her fault, but he also rallied more support with Poe. It also provided a moment for her to express feelings and emotions she had been hiding inside herself. Over the past year she had been having dark visions and voices inside her head. Finn isn't afraid of her, but he is afraid for her.

Rey : I lost control.

Finn : It wasn't your fault.

Rey : It was.

Finn : No. It was Ren. He made you do it.

Rey : Chewie's gone. That power came from me. Finn, there are things you don't know.

Finn : Then tell me.[pause] 

Rey : I, uh, had a vision. Of the Sith throne. And who was on it.

Finn : Ren?

Rey : [shaking voice]  And me.

The fact that he is also a Force User and could sense what was happening with her just cemented the bond that they already have. He’s going to be able to understand things about her that others cannot. Finn was the person Rey could talk to and trust he would listen and care. He didn’t hold things against her, he had her back 100%. He cried for her. He verbally affirmed her. They spoke in a raw and honest way with each other that was beautiful. Finn absolutely has faith in Rey.

On Kijimi, there are just nice moments of togetherness. You can tell Finn is staying close to Rey as a source of support and just keeping an eye out for her. When Ren's destroyer arrives and Rey begins to go outside, Finn's right there watching her back.

After Rey's interaction with Kylo when Kylo reveals to her not only that they form a dyad in the force, but that she's a Palpatine this is revealed in the novel. In this moment she's tempted once more to join Kylo Ren in the gray or in the dark. Then Finn appears. In the novel, "Suddenly she felt a weight at her back and along with it.....Finn, a bright light piercing the dark......"Come on!" yelled Finn. She sprinted for the edge then launched herself toward the Falcon. Finn grabbed her arm before she could sail by and swung her onto the ramp. They sprinted into the Falcon's belly. The ramp rose closing them in."

Rey tells Finn “People keep telling me they know me. I’m afraid no one does.” Her internal battle became overshadowed by this massive legacy thrust upon her. She's exhausted and isn't pure Jedi. Part of Rey's arc is she's got darkness in her and she knows it. Once again Finn is just present for her in whatever that means while she tinkers with repairs.

Something that isn't given any time or attention is that Finn is pure white light to Rey. Finn is Rey's greatest pull to the light. He also tells Poe that he and Leia can understand Rey’s struggle in a way Poe cannot. This isn't just Finn running after Rey. He's aware of his friends struggles and trying to stop her from leaning towards the dark side.

Poe Dameron : [after Rey heads to the Death Star wreckage alone]  What the hell was she thinking?

Finn : Poe, we gotta go after her.

Poe Dameron : We'll get the Falcon fixed, and get out there as fast as we can

Finn : No, we're gonna lose her.

Poe Dameron : Look, she left us! What do you wanna do? Swim?Finn : She's not herself. You have no idea what she's fighting.

Poe Dameron : And you do?

Finn : Yeah, I do. And so does Leia.

Poe Dameron : Well, I'm not Leia

.Finn : That's for damn sure.

When she's fighting Kylo Ren Rey is out of control. She's dominated by rage and frustration. In the novel, "A presence cut through her awareness - shining and bright and a voice screaming, "Rey!" Finn was running toward her, leaving Jannah behind to watch their skimmer. Rey's instinct to protect Finn was overwhelming. With no thought at all she called on the Force and thrust out with her hand. He flew backward toward Jannah toward the edge of bridge wreck. A wave crashed down on the streach of bridge between them.

Finn : The Force. The Force brought me here. It brought me to Rey. And Poe.

I really love that Finn became a General alongside Poe and I think one of their best scenes together is when they gave a speech to the members of the Resistance.

Now it is implied that this is both Rey's workstation AND Rey/Finn's bedroom. I cannot confirm and this might just be me, but there we go.

Finn: Hey, don't touch that. That's my friend's.

Droid. Sorry, she is gone?

Finn: Yeah, she's gone. I don't know where.

Droid: I miss her.

Finn: I miss her, too.

I loved the moment when he sensed her death. The confirmation of his Force-sensitive instincts was so satisfying. And then his joy when he saw her alive was completely consistent with everything Finn has done with Rey since the moment they first met.

John Boyega, Finn's actor, was once asked whom he would like to see Finn end up with between Rey and Rose and he replied, "[Finn] had this kind of banterous relationship with Han, then he has this loving relationship with Rey. Now with Rose, it feels like he has this great relationship. Personally? Rey. Yeah, Rey."

i know we talk a lot about toxic zutara shippers who self-insert onto katara because they want to be with zuko & end up mischaracterizing both of them, but there's also a certain brand of zutarians (usually grown men on reddit btw) who self-insert onto zuko because they think he's this cool relatable edgelord & desperately want to be with katara. they are imo even worse than the former type of zutarians.

a lot of them fetishize katara's skin color & indigenous heritage, and view zuko as some kind of white colonizer they can project onto (even though he's not white & the fire nation is based on imperial japan). and the things they say about katara in the context of their ship are honestly disgusting.

it's literally animated reylo for them.

i'm pretty sure most of us wouldn't hate zutara even 25% as much as we do now if their shippers weren't so nasty, rude and annoying.

1 - Yeah, the biggest problem with Zutara has always been the "EVERYONE needs to like this, and they need to do it in the exact way I want them to."

2 - The sheer amount of times I've seen fans, mostly american fans, of ATLA completely ingnore the fact that the characters live in a pan-asian world and thus NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM is white should be more than enough for someone to owe me finantial compensation, and I'm still trying to find the person I should sent my formal complaint to.

3 - The amount of, again mostly american, fans that tend to see Katara as "generic indigenous character" instead of having a very clear personality of her own should also be enough for someone to owe me finantial compensation.

4 - Reddit is only not THE worst of the internet because 4chan and Twitter exist. I swear to God, I never got the appeal of either, and somehow the users keep getting worse and worse each year.

5 - Any guy that likes Zuko because they think he's an "edgelord" completely missed the point of the character, mainly that even at his worse he still had a kind heart. These people sound like the type that think they're just like the Joker just because they didn't do the dishes for their mom.

I just saw a post calling Rey, Rey Skywalker. It has been 3 years and that decision in the movie fills me with rage. Good for Rey getting a last name but.. why disney? She is no more a Skywalker than my left pinky toe.

Star Wars NEEDED that Reylo Happily Ever After.

But now the story can be how far will someone go for love or vengeance? It's honestly unintentionally brilliant that Rey's story arc is echoing Anakin's.

Anakin lost his mother, his wife, children & finally himself. He was brought back by love, faced his demons and saved the universe.

Rey lost her parents, the love of her life, and finally herself (probably)

In a sick twist, Rey lost Ben after they saved the galaxy & she doesn't have anyone close to her to bring her back if she falls to the dark side.

But. If she willingly goes to the dark side in order to create a situation where getting Ben back is possible, then that would be ideally the best way to handle it.

There's alot more you can do with Dark Rey than Rey. That's the unfortunate corner they've put themselves in. Where Rey as she is after TROS has two options, maybe three.

Either be cut off from The Force for a long time to go back to her roots as a Scavenger. She only uses her blaster & her staff. Refusing to use her lightsaber or Kylo Ren's which she salvaged until she's ready to reconnect with The Force.

Or have her embrace her dark side & go on a warpath to get Ben back.

There's also the option to do both. Which could easily work because Rey's pretty much been destroyed after TROS. She lost everything to save a universe she's always felt hopelessly alone in, surrounded by people that mean well but will never understand her, and she's fighting for a cause she doesn't really have any attachment to.

She's still just a nobody that was sold off for drinking money searching for belonging even after saving the entire universe. Unable to sleep, less she risk dreaming about Ben. Haunted by their final embrace & the feeling of him not being beside her anymore. Like a ghost, she went through life. Feeling like a hollowed out, worn down, pathetic shell of her former self in every way. Punching the mirrors out because she hates looking at how empty her eyes really are since losing Ben. Not using her force abilities as much because she's too afraid of losing it one day.

TLJ Rey is where the character peaked.

Reylo's indetroner equivalent to date.

I mean, Dongfang Qingcang = Kylo Ben to death. They both killed their father for essentially the same reason ! And Rey and Orchid are both in the same situation of not knowing who they are and no one knows who they are either. Girls without a home and family, and who would really want have that, who don't know who they are and think that basically they are nothing, and who are alone. There's also the color coding of the guy and the girl, the girl's powers generally linked to healing, not to mention the mystical connection of the two characters which essentially allows them to resurrect each other at the end. Then obviously, they are in enemy clans. He is from the tribe of the moon, and she, from that of the celestial. Then we discover that she is in fact the reincarnation of the former leader of another clan, which the Moon Tribe once decimated, so she is the equivalent of the goddess of nature. So in short, the heroine was nobody, but then discovers her true identity which further reinforces the supposed enemy aspect between the two characters. Like Rey when she discovers (unfortunately) that she is Palpatine's granddaughter. Without forgetting that the heroine's primordial form at the beginning is an orchid, that's her name, and you are well aware that an orchid is a plant that needs sunlight. Something said in the series itself, and where we see Dongfang Qingcang taking care of Orchid by making her be in contact with sunlight as much as possible. Not to mention that fairies are often symbolically associated with light in our culture. And even if Orchid is ultimately not a fairy, she thinks she is for the majority of the series and is designated as such by the title. Yes. No doubt. It's Reylo pure and simple.

We'll see how The Hurricane Wars trilogy evolves in the future...

Talasyn and Alaric's relationship is reminiscent of many other well-known fictional romantic relationships for me. (Just like Reylo, and of course, also like Dongfang Qingcang & Orchid, and they are all generally - so not all - the same)

There is Romeo & Juliet by the obvious appearance of the star-crossed lovers, from an enemy clan in the middle of war.

The obvious myth of Hades & Persephone. Because sometimes Persephone is called the Light of the Underworld and she is also sometimes depicted with a torch. So always associated with light. Hades is on the other hand associated with death and darkness. It is also often pointed out that they are a power couple.

Of course ; Beauty and the Beast. But in the sense that the trope is used today in the idea of ​​a man cathegorized as monstrous finally finding redemption / or evolved, through the romantic relationship he forms with a woman. (Let's be real, this is the direction we are heading)

The classics Jane Eyre & Mr Rochester ! The orphan heroine meeting a Byronic hero dressed in black. The emphasis of the relationship being on their spiritual / magical connection. (And probably later in the trilogy the emphasis for Talasyn & Alaric will be on their equality, like Jane & Rochester, I'd be hard-pressed, seeing as after all, it's taken from a Reylo fanfic and is about a trope of light / darkness, equality will inevitably come to the table at some point)

Erik & Christine from The Phantom of the Opera. The young orphaned woman associated to the light who finds herself in a complicated and tragic romantic relationship with a man having a traumatic past, and wearing a mask over his face. But who also offers to train the heroine and ends up doing so.

The other aspect of Reylo would be Darcy & Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, but hey... as long as we don't get in the sequel the guy telling to the girl that she may be nothing according to her or for the others, but not for him like with Kylo (And Dongfang Qingcang from LBFAD) as equivalent to Darcy's failed declaration... well I can't really say. Hoping we will have it too !

I also hope that the connection between Talasyn & Alaric on a spiritual and magical level will strengthen even more, and also above all that the concept of equality will come to the table as their relationship evolves positively. (Which should normally be the case)

"Enemies to Lovers" is for protracted, drawn-out timelines of events that turn enemies into spouses that follow a more or less linear sequence.

"Enemies then Lovers" is for when at the last minute, in the span of a single conversation instead of an accelerating series, two people who hate each other are now fucking.

With three episodes left in Ahsoka, there's not a centimeter of room for the former. Instead (hypothetically) leaving us with a hastily-patched-together subplot trying to cash in on whatever reylo was trying to do.
