A Year In the Mess and the Millennial Cross Rory Bears. FALL
Tumblr media
I've pinned what part of my issue has been with the past three episodes. Everyone is miserable. No one was this miserable in the original series. Except no one is miserable about the actual justifiable issues to be miserable. They make their own misery.
What enabled this realization? This episode wasn't complete misery. Dear God- I actually enjoyed most of it.
THE LIFE AND DEATH BRIGADE aka the best of Rory and Logan. This is them at their best. This Logan at his best. Clearly the Palladino's always wanted to do more with this group except possibly didn't have the budget for the TV show version. The brigade was somewhat deserving of it's bad rep is about spontaneity, playfulness and theatre. The brigade is made up of wierdo's of a different kind and Rory found such realness amongst them.
Rory and Logan are also frustrating. They are clearly in love and yet both refuse to make commitments to each other. Why? Don't know. Rory finally realizes that she needs to stop falling back on Logan or being the side piece either one. It's sad really Rory was such a purpose for Logan and she made him genuinely happy. She brought out the best in him. Logan provides Rory with excitement, independence and stability. He seems to be just paddling in life as well, just in a better swimming pool.
Tumblr media
Something is going on when Jess Mariano is like a warm hug on this show. He is though. His muscley arms and that long silky hair. It was grounding and warm. Like a cookie. He's still Jess. Comes in says what he needs to say, pulls the WIFI and dips. No more. No less.
Rory walking through her empty grandparents' home was poignant and heartbreaking. All the flashbacks and then Rory writing her novel at Richard desk. It would've have meant more if Rory had been shown as being more affected earlier by her grandfather's passing.
Tumblr media
Emily employed in a whaling museum is delicious. Turning tales into grimly fascinating stories of woe. It’s perfect. I would go there every week. Her finding a sense of individuality amongst her grief was beautiful.
Tumblr media
It was delightful seeing Dean. Rory finally gave Dean his flowers.... hopefully the fanbase can learn to grow up to. No, Dean was not the worst. Jess was. Speaking of....
Grown and Sexy Jess. Maybe he is the one for her. Honestly, I think the Palladino's have always rooted for them anyways. Longing looks and all. We just weren't given much to go on this go round.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luke and Lorelai finally stopping the nonsense unfreezing time and getting married was beautiful and fairytale like and deserved. It was about damn time.
The car ride between Lorelai, Rory and Luke was so sweet. Like I've always said...... those three really soul mates. I wish Rory and Luke had gotten more scenes with just them two this go round.
Sookie wasn't present at the wedding, but she did show up. Given Melissa McCarthy status at the time she couldn't show up the way she wanted to. I just hated their excuse for Sookie being gone...... She's studying vegetables? Whatever
Tumblr media
Let's think about season 7 for moment here. It's nowhere near as bad as this shit has been. Rory didn't receive a personality transplant for one. History has gotten twisted a bit to fit the narrative that the show was perfect until the Palladino's left. It wasn't. The Palladino's continued to do what they do well and do horribly what do horribly.
They were always brilliant at casting, setting and characterization. They were always brilliant at making the simple interesting. They were never good at backstories everyone rich kid on the show got the same one. Every boy Rory dated was Christopher until the next boy Rory dated. The audience focused too much on Rory's love life like that wasn't part of her storylines since episode 1. Lorelai is a narcissist with a man who hates to communicate unless he's losing the woman he loves. Luke got a soap opera surprise child that was a knock off Rory/slash plot device.
But what they did to this character? I have no words except stupidity.
Tumblr media
I never wanted Gilmore Girls to come full circle. Like her or not, Lorelai gave herself over to Rory so that Rory could aim for the proverbial stars. You know what? Rory did achieve and achieved great things. So what happened? We don't know.
The biggest problem with this reboot is that it appears to treat at ten-year gap as cavalierly as if it were one year. Rory’s backstory is a bunch of blanks. We have no idea how covering Obama went, or when her career started to sputter, why is she with Paul, how'd she get back with Logan...... just nothing. That intervening decade happened, and it should matter. Yet, it doesn't why? Again, the Palladino's have never been good with backstory, but it didn't matter but it literally didn't matter. This wasn't about Rory..... it was a statement piece about Millennials. Don't even get me started on the THETHIRTYSOMETHINGCLUB. Which mocks these individuals as failures...... I think without depth. Oddly, this show lost whatever shallow depth it had.
I'm not sure about Rory becoming a 16-year-old Lorelai either which is what the original intention of the Palladino's was. Are we supposed to feel good or bad about these things? Is Lori a good mother? Is Rory a success? Which part of repeating her mother's life is beautiful or tragic? The show itself is confused on these things.
I'm not surprised no one had been called them to do another version of A Year in the Life. The best parts of the Gilmore Girl revival were not the Gilmore Girls. Season 7 ending felt hopeful. The revival ending felt like things going from bad to worse. Also, bitterly, like pregnancy is never a happy occasion in this family.
Side Note: Diana and the old Lulu from General Hospital having a scene together was great.

A Year In the Mess and the Millennial Cross Rory Bears. SUMMER
Spring had bits of joy but was mostly painful. Glad it was over. Summer can't be that bad.... right?
Rory isn't back, but she obviously is. Everyone seems genuinely happy about it, after all she was beloved there. I understand she's floundering and frustrated and embarrassed about it, but she comes off bitchy.
Also, hello! Rory doesn't read anymore. She doesn't talk about anything of substance or seem interested in anything. What are we doing here? Burning her character bible entirely.
I'm not sure what the Palladino's were going with or trying to prove... possibly they did all this with the hope Netflix would never call them back again.
Tumblr media
Honestly Lane and Zach (Or, whatever his name is) seem like the most normal happy couple with Steve and Kwan. It should've been Dave.
Great. April/Knock off Rory is back and it's awkward. Luke has zero warmth for her. Doesn't even interact with her really. Lorelai has no maternal connection to her and Rory no sisterly connection. But she's there so there's that.
The show does try to create this perception that several characters, such as Paris, are still trying to find their way and piece their lives together despite their success in other areas of their lives. Paris is going through a divorce and lacks the deep validation she continues to crave, Luke and Lorelai are semi-childless and don't communicate, Emily absent of Richard has no purpose in life, Doyle sold out, Logan is in a loveless relationship, April is a knock off Rory and might have future knock off problems ect. ect. Yet. Rory is by far the worst off. Nothing is going right in her life.
WHY?! Instead of taking up 10 minutes for a stupid musical I fast forwarded we could've gotten some more context.
Why are you working a job for free? Why are you not with Logan when it's obvious you both want to be?
Tumblr media
Frustratingly, it takes Jess to fix things: He drops by for 45 seconds and tells her to write a book about her life with Lorelai and then leaves again like the Ghost of Career Advice Present.
Jess has always had a talent for cutting through bullshit and then being socially awkward enough to state the obvious. It's also easy to idealize him especially so when it's done by women who will rationalize the hell out of a man because it's hot. He's hot. The reality? We know nothing of Jess except he's more mature and he's more peaceful. In many ways Rory is where Jess used to be staring into a void with nothing but questions. Jess has a stable income and has identified his authentic goals and pursued them. That's hard work. It's why despite all of his previous fuck ups people love the character. That's all we know. We're not allowed a glimpse into his life beyond that. He's a pop in character and their lives always look perfect.
Tumblr media
Jess is always going to love Rory and I get the sense in many ways she was the inspiration for him to make something of his life. It's important to note how much he did hurt her though and how horrible of a boyfriend he was. I'm glad they learned how to function as quasi family/friends. The Palladino's also are not subtle. It's not a secret how much they love Milo and I'm guessing if they had their way Rory and Jess are endgame. It's hard to not wish for them to make it there too.
Beyond a cool paper delivery segment. Summer was just torture.

A Year In the Mess and the Millennial Cross Rory Bears. SPRING
Hell, this might as well be the identity crisis.
I will give the creators this credit and it is well earn.... In many of their scenes they have heavy lifting to do. Think of a show being only 6 and half episodes long. Beginning, middle, and end. That's all you got. Give us something new to watch but give us nostalgia as much as you can. Find time for 40 odd cameos and find a justifiable reason for them to be there. This isn't even mentioning scheduling around actor's schedules. It's also a credit to the Palladino's that all of these actors wanted to come back and work with them.
Rory turns down a job she obviously needs because she thinks she too good for it. I see what you're doing show. Why doesn't Rory just work at McDonalds?! Is she too good for that or isn't she? There is a moment here to get into relatable territory. What happens when your designated career path shifts? Literally the industry just shifts such as your plant closes down, or the business declares bankruptcy. Or, they reduce staffing size because people don't read anymore.
Interesting storylines. Relatable. Instead, we got millennial bashing. Uneventfully Rory thought she was too good for not one but two jobs. ShaddySacks or whatever and a teaching position at Chilton. FUCK YOU SHOW.
Emily is being exceptionally rude with everyone now, including Rory, but she's grieving so it's fine. For now. Again, this scene below is a glimpse of the original Rory we see in this show.
Tumblr media
The shrink Emily chose sucks. She doesn't encourage any talking nor does she direct Emily and Lorelai. It's literally Emily and Lorelai somehow flying even more blind than they did before. Their conversations are exhausting. Emily seems to be incapable of saying "Lorelai before I go, I would like to see you settled and married to the man you love." Instead, she scolds her. Lorelai actually got a lot accomplished on her own with the shrink. Like a lot accomplished. Emily also accomplishes a lot on her own.
I understand Emily's frustration though. Luke and Lorelai waste a lot of damn time not communicating when they should. Still. Maybe forever. Richard and Emily were couple goals. They are the only people to even hit a marriage anniversary on this show with the exception of Sookie and Jackson.
Tumblr media
Does no one else find it odd that for a husband and wife to be long term functional collaborators they don't find happy couples interesting?
Paris: "Aw Chilton, I cannot remember the books I have read any more than the meals I have eaten even so they have made me" BEAUTIFUL.
It felt good to be back at Chilton. I missed the uniforms. It felt like revisiting a high school you actually enjoyed going to. This feeling was short-lived. Instead, you get the sense of Rory used to be and why you liked her. Paris is highly intelligent, witty and funny, but she's bullish and she runs her surrogacy company like a sex trafficking ring. Rory on the other hand was always gentle with people, passionate and likeable. Frankly, she'd make an excellent teacher.
Tumblr media
Maybe that is the core issue at least in terms of Rory's character. Rory's inability to shift goals or career paths. Perhaps it's Rory dedication to her feminist stance. Hell, it's never made sense why she didn't marry Logan to begin with. She could've married him and achieved financial stability while pursuing her career with journalistic integrity.
Rory in so many ways is the heart of the show and I'm wondering what the show is getting out of going the route we're going. She's immature, annoying and unprofessional. WHY?!?!?!?! Dear God! Give us something. Something over the last 9 years that would've given us a clue as what the fuck is going on in this girl's brain.
Tumblr media
Paris Gellar continues to be amazing. Tristan Dugray oh the story arc you should've had. It would have been better had Tristan and Paris actually slept together and that's what triggered the divorce with Doyle. Something other than Paris and Doyle are both just neurotic and ultimately need Rory to be in their third to function. Paris and Tristan honestly could work as a couple if Rory was their third as well. Rory seems to only be destined for side boo status at this point as well. By sleeping with the Wookie she's cheated on Logan AND Paul. Unless Logan doesn't care who she sleeps with at this point.
MAE WHITMAN!!!!!!! We love you. Good Girls 4 Life.
Tumblr media
Doyle had me at hello and a part of me is thrilled that he's living his best sell out life in California possibly with a hot actress.
Logan also been given zero-character development up until this point. All we know is that he's seemingly success eating off his daddy's plate. Why? No idea. What's he do? No clue.
Again, they are trying, bless them, to fill out these gaps, but it's frustrating at this point. Like what's going on.
If this was a new show I wouldn't watch it cause this episode was all about creating the point that Rory (Millennial is entitled) You want to make a show that's a fuck you to millennials my fuck you back is not contributing to ratings. Alas, choice seasons of the original and characters will always have my heart.

A Year In the Mess and the Millennial Cross Rory Bears. WINTER
Let's address the elephant in the room while I have you front and center. Rory in A Year in The Life was a commentary on millennials. Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator, confirmed this was the inspiration for Rory's turn in AYITL. Rory was saddled with all the complaints the previous generations have of millennials such as millennials are spoiled, entitled, privileged blah blah blah. Hey now, now that we have not one but two generations under us I do understand the desire to complain (and be terrified). Gen Z and Gen Alpha general aesthetic is to be Billie Eilish lite as in angry, depressed, violent, or, antisocial. They have the lowest attention span recorded in human history and Taylor Swift is their greatest philosopher. Jesus take the wheel
Tumblr media
The problem? None of this was in Rory Gilmore 1.0-character DNA. Matter of fact who the hell was Rory in the revival?! What the hell happened to her? We don't know. The Palladino's don't even bother expanding on it, but who does?! When it comes to Millennials we're to be mocked not understood. Most millennials came of age where there was a horrible job, house market and were in an economic recession. Our lives were being taken over by technology and social media. Rory picked a profession that was still mostly print at the time of her college graduation.... this is an entirely digital market now and one readers now pay for if they want something of substance. How lucrative is a real authentic journalism career? Not just think pieces or a seat on CNN or Fox News roundtable?
This is why A Year in the Life was a Mess
Tumblr media
Believe me, I wanted to love it. This is my childhood we're talking about here. I loved Stars Hallow. Love my Gilmores. Yet, when I finally tuned I did so when just a hint of dread.....gradually all my fears were realized. Thus after 6.2 hours concluded somehow, we got somewhere, nowhere, found out little, nothing at all, were satisfied and just plain frustrated. So, let's break this mess down by episode. While mainly I will cover how the revival failed Rory - I will mention other frustrations because I can.
Winter
Tumblr media
Why is Rory only in town for a day?! She's gotta leave for London soon. What has she been doing?! Ok, she's written a piece in the New Yorker, but how does that work?! Are you on staff? Do you submit freelance pieces and they choose them? She's a good writer, she's always been a good writer, and she's shown she is capable of running a paper - why is she struggling?! They doubled down on the millennial annoyance by having Rory abandoned Brooklyn as it was going condo and Lena Dunham. Subtle.
Super-Proud Luke is and always will be cute and Rory is so his kid. He's now a subscriber to The New Yorker which he reads every week just to support Rory. Also, he's attached her article to his menus so everyone can read it. Which she treats as cringe instead of sweet and supportive, but I'll let it go. Luke, Lorelai and Rory really are found family and super adorable.
Yes, the bit about everyone forgetting Paul is funny but THIS ISN'T RORY?! Paul seems genuinely sweet and thoughtful not just to Rory but her whole family so why are we doing this? Again, this is someone's depiction of a millennial. I guess we're really shitty to great guys. Rory had never been previously depicted as self-centered jerk just slightly oblivious as well all are.
It's a thrill to see all the old characters make a cameo.
The loss of Ed Herrmann was a gut punch to his cast. You can tell. It's also serves as a gut punch to the audience. We will miss you old chap. Rory following Emily around at the repast is the first hint of old Rory we've seen on this show yet.
Tumblr media
It also serves as another wasted opportunity. No one except Emily seems to be genuinely affected by Richard's passing. The Gilmores are a small family, but a tight one. The patriarch passing surely would've affected all three gilmore girls deeply. It would've been better had we found Rory on a cooperate writing staff in London (employed by Logan) that she quit to spend more time at home to support her mother and grandmother. It would've been nice had Richard's passing compelled her into finding meaning beyond professional success. It would've been nice if they showed her pursuing something related to Richard from a journalistic perspective. They could've showed her on the road chasing a story to run into Jess or Dean or hell any of the countless characters. SOMETHING. Instead, we got spiraling millennial which is continuing to just seem misguided.
Berta and her roving family is trash and I didn't need them.
Emily starts in on Rory current state of homelessness which bring me to my next point of contention..... How is Rory broke?! She's had Trixie/Gran, her grandparents, Logan, Luke and her father?! I don't care that she's privileged unlike a lot of the privileged but not as privilege youtubers who enjoy spitefully and bitterly complaining. Despite what these grips say no, Rory's success has never come easily to her. The reality she was studying and investing her teenage years in academic pursuits while Rory's haters were partying or watching TV. Rory's always been resourceful and yet can't find a way to make a steady income in addition to writing. What's going on?
April/ Knock-off Rory is annoying, and it doesn't escape me that Luke prefers Rory. I'm glad hehehe. I mean he has a kid biologically and yet he considers going to Rory's graduation as going to his kids graduation. Side note: I know the creators would like to pretend that season 7 never happened but what are we doing here?! LnL have seriously never talked about having kids in the last 9 freakin' years?! Well at least we know why..... miscommunication and we needed a way to write medical Paris Geller into the story. Surrogacy is actually perfect for a medical student that doesn't actually like sick people.
Paris Geller ah I love this cold-hearted little psycho.
Tumblr media
Okay Rory is writing a book with a queer drunk brit who steals food from other people, this is who she wrote her New Yorker piece on. This is the depiction of the feminist on the show.
I love Logan and I Love Rogan, but WHAT ARE WE DOING?! Why are they both having affairs with people they don't care about. Rory cheated once? twice?......okay Rory is a cheater, but why?
Paris and Doyle but of course they did! Can't have a happy couple in Stars Hallow or anywhere near it for long. I can see them having problems though because they've always had problems and sexually resolved them. Plus, in Paris's ideal functioning world she's married to Rory and Doyle.
WHY DOES RORY GILMORE HAVE ALL OF HER SHIT ACROSS FIVE HOMES?! How much stuff does she have? Honestly. Rory was always organized. At this point we've just got a personality transplant.
Once again, this is the main problem with the revival. None of this is behavior or characteristics we've associated with Rory. It's insert millennial here from a jaded baby boomer.
This is exhausting....................................... and I'm gonna have to take this in shifts. Next up spring.
Side note: Christmas here would be amazing and so charming.

“Every time we shot one side, the other person was off camera. To the point where Adam [Driver] flew to Ireland to be off camera for Daisy [Ridley] work, which was essential because they had very intimate conversations. And that also means that we had to shoot each of these scenes twice, which means that this moment in rehearsals was really important and that my editor, Bob Ducsay, did an amazing job of making it feel like a sequel."

Top Four Romances I'm Furious Didn't Get a Happy Ending
4. Jack and Rose
Blame the door. Blame Rose. Blame James Cameron. Blame science. I don't care. I, and everyone else, HATED that Jack died. After all that.......... he dies? Seemingly in a dumb way.
James Cameron has obviously expanded on his decision making skills regarding deciding to kill Jack. Obviously while it was about Jack's science and the pure significance of the sum of loss the true meaning was......Rose. Rose went from her mother, to Cal, to Jack. She was always dependent on someone for survival, status, guidance or permission to live. If she had gone with Jack she'd be living Jack's life. Jack dying is what forced Rose to finally take control of her own life. I get that. It's noble. I also wanted Jack to live. The audience did as well and it did look like if she just moved over.... he would have.
Don't even get me started on "My Heart Will Go On" cause imma cry.
Tumblr media
3. Buffy and Angel
Probably the greatest more tragic romance ever. A couple that defined the 90s with electric chemistry that saved this couple from being creepy instead made it sweet and chaste. Angel fell in love with Buffy the moment he saw her. It was her that motivated him to become A Champion. He gave her the iconic Claddagh ring.  That night, they slept together for the first time, which resulted in Angel experiencing the "moment of true happiness" required to end his curse. He was alleviated of his soul, and reverted to the guiltless, sadistic Angelus........ breaking viewers hearts. Especially this viewer. While Spuffy grew on me and Bangle grew apart..... it became clear even in the worst of times they were connected by the heart.
A romance destined to end in disaster all the same. This one was for the history books.
Tumblr media
2. Augustus “Gus” Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster
Working through their illnesses together, the two manage a relationship that is mature beyond their years. Part of what makes the end of this romance so difficult to watch is the fact that though Hazel is much sicker than Gus, his cancer ends up making an aggressive and unexpected return. We should have known it wasn't going to end well, but we were hopefully, THEY were hopefully. The scene when Hazel gets the phone call that Gus passed away, pain just pain. Shailene deserved at least the very a nominiation.
Tumblr media
Reylo
We could have had it all. Ben and Rey could have had the best of both worlds, powerful light and powerful darkness, a balance. Their love story could have brought balanced to the force.
Ben had felt alone and abandoned for a really long time, and had tried to channel those feelings to gain more power, but was clearly failing and having doubts. Then along comes a girl with whom he shares a fate-like connection, with a similar past of parent abandonment/betrayal issues, who opens up to him & seems convinced that he is meant to be someone better.... will become someone better.
But the internet is why we can't have nice things. Reylo benefited from it's fandom, it also was severely wounded from people determined to paint Reylo as something that it wasn't due to their own issues.

Sequel Trilogy stumbled upon greatness with Reylo and more
In hindsight, it's obvious to see how chaotically thrown together the sequel trilogy was. While many things were planned - it wasn't as thought out as it should have been. Both Rian and JJ were able to highly execute different things. JJ, in TFA only, was able to establish very fun and interesting characters. Rian was able to add depth and though provoking existential. It's obvious that it would've been better had one director been allowed to a see a vision through especially for character arcs. (Personally, I vote for Rian for all 3) However! As crazy as it sounds the sequel trilogy might have stumbled into greatness. When you slow down and let the work settle you're able to deduct certain things. For several LITERARY reasons the sequels were not as bad as people make them out to be. TROS is made somewhat redeemable trash because of Reylo. Thank them.
Tumblr media
Star Wars is a fairytale right out of the romanticism era. So much of the journey is about the love of a woman. While many young boys who became the grown fanboy we know today saw lightsabers and alien creatures...... there is more to the story. Motherhood is such an essential element. The emotional crux of The Phantom Menace, and indeed the prequels, is Anakin leaving his mother. That's the attachment injury that Anakin never quite recovers from. Anakin's relationship with Padme is very much about a transference of that love. As much as he loves Padme, his mother is the purest love of his life and her loss causes him to cling onto everyone with a desperation. Watching Star Wars for the first time in chronic logical order it's obvious Anakin is quite a tragic character.
Tumblr media
In TROS, Leia directly “intervenes” at the critical point, as her son grapples with the confusion and pain that his grandfather shared: an abject rejection from someone that he feels he is destined to be with. In this case it transcends the romantic and is in the very fabric of the Force. Unfortunately, due to Carrie Fisher passing we were never able get a scene directly between CF and AD, so there was only so much development we received but it's also clear that Ben has a soft spot for his mama.
Stars is as much a story about Palpatine as it is about the Skywalkers. While in the original story Palpatine was this ominous dictator in the background.... the prequels make it clear that Palpatine is always there in the background. He touches several characters lives and ultimately is the driving force for the world these characters live in. While I hated the last minute switch to Rey is a Palpatine.... it's also fitting. In many ways Ben is given a chance redo Anakin's decisions.
Tumblr media
Least we forget (like I'd ever) Ben chooses the light, runs like a hero to Rey's side to fight Palpatine along with her. Versus Anakin choosing Palpatine against the people he loves. Then Ben is presented with the same reality Anakin was. The person he loves the most lies dead before him. As Ben cradles the lifeless form of Rey, it's paralleled to the lifeless form of Shmi cradled in Anakin’s arms in the Tusken tent. He does love Rey more than he loves even his own parents let's keep it real. His whole family couldn't reach him, but Rey held his hand and he switched to Team Hero.
The story of Rey also turned the play-by-play heroes arc on it's head. Whereas Luke started out sheltered, protected, surrounded by family looking into the dual suns with thoughts of adventure and grandeur. She has been forged by a hard life of self-reliance, of solitude and toil. The reverse was that in addition to Finn she joined a ready-made family in The Resistance. Especially Ren's abandoned family. She lived the Jedi ideal before she had even heard of the Force, and has arrived at her own conclusions of morality and justice. Oddly, this is what mainly confused people about Rey's journey. (the same people frustrated about the lack of originality from Disney wanted Rey to be just like Luke) Any attempts to move into new territory was met with groans. It was interesting to see a character change to see a character not a child or naive young man, but a world wary young woman. (Stick the landing they did not, but the potential was there.) That's not to say there isn't consistency Rey's greatest pull to the dark is her attraction/connection/love for her soul mate.
Tumblr media
I suspect with time the Disney Sequels, like with the Prequels, will be more appreciated. Somewhat amusingly in retrospect, The Last Jedi, despite having featured our heroes exposed as flawed, human and capable of making mistakes..,.... ends on a note of more universal hope — that another generation might be inspired by defiance without violence. Even more important and this is what Rian Johnson was telling with Luke in The Last Jedi....the hero doesn't matter as much as the myth of the hero. Behind the scenes our heroes are as capable of faltering as we are, even of getting exhausted of the fight. It doesn't matter though. We need them to be inspired to fight, to believe. Meanwhile, Luke begins to sense the darkness inside of Rey which surprisingly leads quite well into the next movie. The movie is gorgeous and the soundtrack cannot be faulted.
Tumblr media
The sequels fall mostly in their side characters. Then again.... they are side characters. The only exception is Finn. He started off as a major player and someone I wanted to know more about, but by the end of the trilogy, we learn nothing more and he fades into the background. Was he going to ever outshine Kylo Ren/Ben Solo? Hell, no, but he should have been bigger.
The biggest challenge Disney LucasFilm had was building a Star Wards that could move forward. Whatever the world says about Rian Johnson, he had the guts to do something different with the franchise when he made The Last Jedi, which is what many fans asked for after The Force Awakens. The latter movie rehashed multiple elements from the original trilogy to satisfy fans to the point that people thought the film was unoriginal and playing it too safe. However, it's clear JJ Adams sought to honor the original films.

As an original TnB'r...... I don't mind baddies in love. I don't care if it's toxic. Now i'll take Reylo anyway that I can and I mean that, but Kylo Ren or Ben Solo could've both gotten it either way. Yeah, I said it.
