Juulna’s 2021 Multi-Fandom Fanfiction Rec List - Part Three

(Yes, I realize this is a year late, but this year's been a bit nuts. I still hope you enjoy these fics anyway!)

Based only on what I’ve read with my own eyes this year!

Follow me on my journey into what, at times, was…

…actually rather calming! Perhaps you can find some comfort and entertainment, fluff and angst and romance and friendship, smut and a distinct lack of it, space adventures and fantasy and modern adventures, serial killers and good guys, redemption and reconciliation and learning to become someone completely different — there is so much here I read that stuck with me over the past year, and the 2021 Fanfic Reading Challenge ( @fanfic-reading-challenge ) allowed me a new way to keep track of all of my favourites. So props to that event! Definitely participating again (considering I run the event, yeah, that's probably a given lol, but full disclosure).

Without further ado, here were my 2021 fic favourites!

After having been temporarily blinded due to an injury, you learned new skills. These you continued to hone after you had healed, and so you took to wearing blindfolds.

Supreme Leader Snoke deemed these skills useful for the Knights of Ren, which led to your quarters changing to those beside Kylo Ren's. Slowly you came to understand him. And, in his own way, he came to know you as well.

In which an attempt is made on the life of galactic senator Ben Organa-Solo, and Rey is assigned to be his personal bodyguard. Their biology makes them fast enemies, and Rey struggles to balance her duty as a Jedi with the rivalry forming between them. Perhaps they even hate one another. Until suddenly they don't.

*Then he was moving through the darkness, and for all the training she had endured, Rey froze when faced with his shadow. He caught her jaw in his hand, and Rey shivered at its breadth. His hands were soft, his grip firm. That confusing scent assaulted her again, stronger this time as its source breathed in her face.

“But understand this, little Jedi, you are a guest in my territory. Any omegas I bring back are mine . I am larger than you, I am stronger than you. You listen to me , are we clear? I am dominant, between the two of us. I am the alpha .”

With a few steadying breaths she managed to dampen her alpha response enough to speak, “Get out of my face.”

The Stormtrooper's Handguide On How To Handle An Insufferable Boss by riffraffes

“We... have a favor to ask,” one of the Stormtroopers says slowly, almost sheepishly. The blank white faces of the masks stare back at her, but Rey can feel waves of embarrassment and fear rolling off of them.

Rey doesn't have all day to pander to them, so she lets out a low growl, daring them to continue.

“Can you please fuck Kylo Ren, already?” comes out desperately, and it's got to be the absolute last thing that she had ever expected to hear.

Tears were running down her cheeks now, and Poe wanted to do nothing more than hug her, but there was nothing he could say—nothing she would want to hear. Poe remembered all the people he’d lost, all the times he had raged and screamed and cried about the unfairness of it all.

“Leia sacrificed herself to bring him back,” Rey declared suddenly, ceasing her constant pacing around the fire as she looked straight at him. “And he sacrificed himself for me—and now no one’s going to know. All he’ll be remembered as is Kylo Ren, but he was—he was so much more.” She exhaled with a shudder and whispered, “He was a part of me, and I—I don’t feel whole without him.”

A Force Ghost Ben/Rey love story, with a side of rebuilding the galaxy.

There are worse things than being a ghost. Walking through walls is kind of fun, and eavesdropping on conversations is certainly convenient, but how do you get the attention of someone who can't see you? Ineptly, it turns out.

They were half way through the second bottle by now, and their shoulders were touching. She could feel the hard line of Jaskier’s thigh against hers. She was very aware of the chest hair visible at the open neck of his shirt, and how he could probably see down her dress from here. She hadn’t moved to put any distance between them and neither had he.

“Why are we still talking about him? I don’t care about Geralt of Rivia any more,” lied Yennefer.

“Nor do I,” Jaskier lied back.

A Twist in Time by didoandis

When Jaskier looks over the witcher has his eyes shut tight, his whole body seeming pained. Jaskier realises he wants to soothe him, and the strength of feeling surprises him. He’s been too long without company.

“What happened?” the witcher says finally.

Jaskier blinks. “That’s quite a big question. I’m afraid you’ll need to be more specific.”

“With Nilfgaard,” the witcher clarifies, growling slightly. “It shouldn’t – it didn’t happen like this.”

In 1240, Jaskier the bard leaves Posada earlier than planned because of a devil in the mountains.

In 1263, three years after Nilfgaard conquers the north, Julian Pankratz, viscount of Lettenhove, hires a witcher and learns about the path his life should have taken.

The Soldier rolled into the movement with a dancer’s grace and came to his full height just as easily. For a moment, his hands reached up to run over the exposed skin, before he slowly turned to face Geralt once more.

The Witcher froze in a mixture of horror and near-frantic hope.

He stared into the eyes of a dead man and whispered, “Jaskier?”

Series: Meet Death Sitting by @bomberqueen17

"OK this series has been going on for 2 years now and I should summarize it better.

The first part is several decades of, largely, Geralt and Jaskier's interactions, as they both fumble together toward some kind of meaningful understanding. That section largely concludes with a Jaskier/Geralt/Yennefer endgame.

Then there's a time jump, and the series picks up after the events of the Witcher 3 games. I follow Lambert as he copes with grief, and Keira as she learns new things about herself, and the lives they make.

I decided to tell the story of how Ciri became Empress after W3, which intersects with Keira and Lambert's adventures; I read the books somewhere in this and got invested in some of the themes they brought up. And entangled with this, I got interested in the politics of the North, especially the Upper Aedirn Free State and the threads laid down in the Witcher 2 game that didn't exactly get resolved in Witcher 3, and so I have several stories dealing with that thread, which will intersect with the other stories in the same timeline."

Written for the Hannibal Kink Meme prompt: Will figured out Hannibal was the Chesapeake ripper, resulting Hannibal's imprisonment and a complete breakdown for Will. A few years later, Hannibal escapes from prison. Despite the risk, the first thing he does is go after his Mongoose. Give me obsessive, possessive, creepy as hell Hannibal who still wants Will for his own.

Series: When the Devil Smiles Back by @fancybedelia

Four years after his escape, Hannibal Lecter is once again imprisoned at the hospital in Baltimore. He's the same as ever, except that he refuses to discuss Will Graham, who there hasn't been a trace of in years. When the Buffalo Bill killings start, FBI trainee Clarice Starling is sent to interview him, and Hannibal has his interest piqued. But it’s not for reasons anyone would suspect, and as usual, his motivations are all about Will. A remix of Silence of the Lambs, where Clarice finds herself occupied not only with catching Buffalo Bill, but with unraveling the mystery of what exactly happened to Will Graham. And Hannibal knows more than he’s letting on about both.

“Excuse me?” Molly finds herself laughing, sharp voiced and flabbergasted. She turns again, enough to see Freddie, smirking and staring back at her from the kitchen table.

I was tagged by @dual-domination :D

What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore? Completely obsessed is a bit strong, but I was really into Grindelwald/Dumbledore. It's probably easy to guess what turned me off the whole series in general.

Which ship would you consider your first one? I think it was Éowyn and Faramír from LotR.

Your first fanfic belonged to which couple? That's actually surprisingly easy to check because I didn't start to write shippy fic until my AO3 days - it's Enjolras and Grantaire from Les Mis.

Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over? I have no distinct memory of it, but it had to be something Harry Potter related, because my fandom life started on some forum dedicated to that.

Did you ever get into ship discourse? Not personally, but I did sit on the sideline with a bucket of popcorn. That, or going on and on about how and why I dislike certain ships, but I can't recall actually fighting anyone over them. (Most noteworthy are the Great Enjonine war of 2013 and the whole Reylo thing.)

Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently? Reylo was part of the reason why I backed away from SW, it was bloody everywhere. Weirdly enough, Enjolras/Grantaire. Yes I ship it. No, not like that. The level of weird mischaracterisation these two suffered in fandom was off the charts, like, you had to seriously dig to even get some canon-era fic, everything else was modern AU with OCs that incidentally shared the name of the characters you wanted to read about.

Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read? Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling. ...Or possibly Wu Xie and Shen Wei, I can't remember which one I read last.

Currently, do you have any OTPs? The one I'm currently most obsessed over is PingXie.

Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together? Honestly? Rey and Finn from Star Wars. They started out on such a great note! Like you coud actually feel that these two LIKED each other! ...Don't get me started on this one, I'll descend into a frothing diatribe against the Sequel Trilogy in 0,5 seconds flat. Disgraceful.

Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting? I can't think of any.

Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over? ...Maybe if I still enthusiastically shipped Grindeldore? My ships are usually either pretty vanilla or intentionally dark.

What was your favorite crack ship? This is a difficult question, because I usually take my weird crossovers more seriously than crack, but Enjolras and Captain America probably qualify?

Who is the couple you read more fanfics off? Huhh... that probably comes down to a draw between Enjolras and Grantaire from Les Misérables and Xie Lian and Hua Cheng from Heaven Official's Blessing.

What most of your ships usually have in common? There's often a 'two against the world' element. This applies across all sorts of genres from Maurice/Alec (Maurice) all the way to HuaLian.

What you absolutely hate in a ship? Negging and emotional abuse sold as '''banter'''. Plain old abuse sold as #relationshipgoals. Like if you're writing a dark ship that's all fine and well but don't ask me to pretend it's cute.

You know, just today I started wondering... are there any Hades&Persephone AUs for Daemyra? I assume I'd probably find some if I looked, but I don't really remember seeing any fic or edit like that in the wild, so to say. Which kinda weirds me out, because on the one hand I lowkey ship Reylo and those AUs used to be pretty much everywhere for that ship, and on the other hand... come on, Daemyra seems like it would be SUCH an obvious choice for that kind of mythological reference!

Hades is Persephone's uncle no matter which version of the myth you go with, as he and Demeter, Zeus, and Poseidon are all siblings. And while he's not meant to be understood as an evil or even particularly violent figure in context, pop culture has moved from portraying him as a sort of Satanic character due to his position as ruler of the Underworld to portraying him as a sexy, scandalous, alluringly dangerous, and often dominating character in romance stories, while also emphasizing his willingness to raise Persephone to a position of power by marrying her, thus making her his queen rather than just some kind of concubine after the kidnapping, and by offering her godly honors equal to his own. There's plenty to work with, then, if one wanted to play with Daemon-Hades parallels. With a bit of imagination, you could even play off Daemon sneaking Rhaenyra out of the Red Keep through the secret passage and taking her to the lower parts of the city and into a brothel, then attempting to seduce her, as a kind of descent into an underworld itself... especially when reading the myth as a symbolic "death" of a maiden who is then reborn as an adult woman through her marriage and all it implies, including an assumption of awakening sexuality.

Rhaenyra would also work well as a Persephone, I think. We see her at the start of a story as a teenager being thrust into a variety of situations, including difficult ones, by the people around her, who are often older than her and should know better... like the Persephone in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, who is not privy to Zeus' decision to accept Hades' proposal to marry her to him, doesn't even get to say anything about Demeter unleashing winter on the world until Zeus agrees to rescind his own deal with Hades, and may or may not get tricked into eating the pomegranate seeds. But Persephone isn't just a helpless maiden, she's also the "dread queen" who Odysseus offers sacrifices to so that he may access the knowledge of the dead and eventually return to Ithaca, who convinces Hades to let Orpheus try and bring Eurydice back to the world of the living, and who could be invoked to inflict curses on those who had wronged her supplicants. And Rhaenyra, too, grows into her role as the heir of the Targaryen dynasty until, in the finale, she's a woman ready to go to war to avenge herself and her child.

So, yeah. I think that kind of AU would honestly work a lot better for them than for other ships that often just borrow the general bad boy/good girl vibe inspired by Hades&Persephone comparisons, lol.

I also cannot recall seeing much if any Hades/Persephone comparisons and content for Rhaenyra and Daemon and I am also very surprised given how popular both things are. The two of them being uncle/niece is almost enough to go on alone, but as you pointed out, there's a lot of other things that fit too. You did such a wonderful job of describing the comparison It's lovely.

who would you cast in a love hypothesis adaptation? i have a feeling the casting is gonna be...not great.

Eh, I'm not gonna make assumptions until it happens. I by adaptations with a "wait and see, be realistic but optimistic until you know what you've got".

With that being said, at this point I have basically no idea. I just pictured Adam Driver for Adam because... how could you not. And Adam (Driver) is a very distinct looking person who basically no other guy in Hollywood resembles. Like, by sheer All Around Bigness (and I'm not even talking height, because there are guys taller than Adam in Hollywood, if not many--I'm talking body mass and The Spiritual Expression of Bigness) there are few men in the industry at the moment who can match Adam.

With Olive, I have less of an image because to me, Daisy Ridley has always been an innocuous stand in for projection, which is one reason why Reylo fic is so popular, imo. Are you picturing Rey, or are you picturing yourself? Daisy and Adam had chemistry, but he dominated the scenes that they were in together--elevated her, for sure, asked more of her, yes, but one of them was Acting and the other was acting. And nothing about her Look was particularly unique or strong, so it was easy for her to be anyone.

Now for meeeeeee the girl I shipped with everyone in Star Wars was Rose. And frankly, I'd love to see the world burn by merit of Kelly Marie Tran being cast as Olive, but that obviously can't happen. I could see Lana Condor in that role. Kylie Bunbury. I don't see why Olive has to be white. Or Adam (the scientist) for that matter. If they are both white, which is sadly not unlikely, I'd throw in two people who I know have chemistry--Nick Hoult an Elle Fanning. And bonus, he's actually a legit Tall Guy. If they felt like doing a romcom without murder (as opposed to what they do on The Great, which is a romcom with murder) I'd say go for them.

But yeah, at this point I don't have a super strong sense of who I'd want. Just make it better than The Hating Game casting.

not to meta my own story but I really like what i did with blue walls with the whole thing of lily not being able to bring herself to even think about dex as a romantic possibility until she’d talked to her mom because. that’s how it be sometimes! in a good way! her time with Dex created this little bubble world that was utterly suspended between two worlds and she found the space in there to be both more herself and a new self in there and to fall in love with him but then when he wanted it to be real she freaked out because she hadn’t made any connections between that bubble world and the real world and she didn’t know how it would survive the transition until she’d talked to her mom, to someone outside the bubble world because she couldn’t make decisions as if she and Dex were the only people who existed and the only references in either world. in this essay I will

i'm getting canceled tonight i guess.

if you actually did a good a faith interpretation of my post you know it's not really ABOUT fanfiction at all, i actually write fanfiction myself. i'm not sharing here because it's overwhelmingly bad fic that i write exclusively as wish-fulfilment or for self-projection, but at least i'm self-aware about it. i am ALSO one of the people who reads ze Books™️, although most of the academic material i consume are nonfiction, so this whole thing is particularly annoying to me. the crux of the matter is that, if you're a little younger you might've missed it, but this website was a hotbed of scalding takes like 'dante's divine comedy is literally fanfiction', 'something something is literally fanfiction' when the thing in question barely counts as a transformative work and, in fact, it weakens the definition of transformative work in itself to try to apply it to literally anything that exhibits an ounce of intertextuality. plenty of takes that are... true, but require some nuance, focused on the idea of transformative fandom as a place defined by its presence of overwhelmingly female and disproportionately queer (occasionally, though disputedly, nonwhite) content creators and the ways in which transformative fan content could be interpreted as a space of defiance to cisheteropatriarchy in the way it permeates traditional media. a third, less common but still relevant take was the focus on how certain fandoms such as trek and doctor who have a long history of involvement in real-world civil rights issues and progressive politics. so this kind of take has been the dominant view on tumblr and transformative fandom for a good decade now, perhaps longer, and the people with this kind of takes can sometimes be a little... obnoxious. and the majority of people on transformative fandom (regardless of wether or not the fandom is disproportionately composed of nonwhite individuals or not, by sheer virtue of american demographics and this site`s heaily skewed userbase, the majority will still be white) are white, and like any other space dominated by white people, fandom has often been a vehicle for white supremacy. "Stitch Media Mix" talks about this in-depth. the discourse on fandom racism and ways in which transformative fandom as a whole contribute to racialized stereotypes, hierarchies, and deeper problems within online culture has led to a lot of people with grievances with fandom, many of whom are women of color, to develop an entire online identity built around the concept of being "critical of fandom", which is a very weird thing to do with fandom is literally billions of people, not a unified demographic, and that being critical of something can mean a WIDE amount of things; which in turn has led to a lot of people insulating themselves completely from any criticism of fandom as being inherently in bad faith, which a weird thing to do when literally ANY sphere of society should be open to criticism. people taking critiques of media they consume and taking critiques of their own critiques as personal attacks are abound here and make everything worse. so a fairly recent (mid2018ish, definitely post the insanity of reylo discourse but before sarah z blew up in popularity) trend has been that people in these communities isolate more and more and the general discourse has effetively resulted in people with differing takes in fanfiction specifically but fandom as a Whole (which is, again very weird to say because fandom is not 'a Whole' because there's no unifying element to different fandoms) only interacting with each other in hostile ways. and increasingly, in my personal sphere, a lot of people are positioning themselves in the "fandom critical" (AGAIN, WEIRD THING TO SAY, WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN, PLEASE USE WORDS WITH PRECISION) sphere, and I tend to take that "side" myself, but i specifically do not think framing this as a team A or team B thing is useful. this culture war was in the buildup.

last week a post by a user i follow recently became popular. the post itself was a critique that i.. do not necessarily agree with. it was ultimately about the idea of easily-consumable popular media being seen as an acceptable form of exclusive media engagement by people in the "pro-fandom" sphere, and how the insidiousness of this line of thinking has to do with how capitalist media production is designed to spread, and how fandom AS A TREND, not specifically any individuals or any fanworks, can empower capitalism. the post specifically did NOT use the kindest possible words, but that was what they were trying to say. howelljenkins also has really good takes on the subject, albeit from a different angle.

anyway because this is a circular culture war, the result was as follows: 1) a bunch of pro-fandom types refuse to actually make a charitable reading of the post and insist the user in question hates fandom and thinks people under capitalism shouldn't have things that are Fun, and should Only Read Theory and keep sending anon hate to several blogs in the opposing sphere, therefore proving the point that fandom sometimes prevent people from being able to engage critically with things; 2) a bunch of anti-fandom types who defined their entire identity on hating fandom being like "haha look at these cringe people" instead of trying to understand why a demographic overwhelmingly composed of marginalized people would feel strongly to posts that use inflammatory language against an interest of theirs, thereby proving the point that most criticism of fandom is divorced from actual fan content and is vaguely defined. the reason this is a culture war that actually deserves attention (unlike most fandom culture wars, which are just really granular ship wars made into social justice issues for clout) is that, for the most part, both of these groups are mostly people with college degrees, many of whom will contirbute to academia in the coming years. fan studies is a relevant field. these discussions have repercussions in wider media criticism trends, and this is why i can't really stand it or just passively ignoring it the way i do with most other inconsequential discourse. like it's genuinely upsetting seeing almost every single tumblr user, most of whom should know better, patting themselves in the back for their inability to read things in a way that doesn't feed into preexisting cultural hostilities in fan spaces.
