The Mormon Kingdom of Beaver Island

Most Latter Day Saints considered Brigham Young to be [Joseph Smith]'s successor, but many others followed James J. Strang, who argued his own claim using a letter that he said Smith had written and mailed to him. Seeking refuge from religious persecution, Strang and his followers moved from Voree to Beaver Island in 1848. At the time, Beaver Island was inhabited by mostly Irish Catholic immigrants.

The Strangites flourished under their Prophet's rule and, due to the Island's strategic location, they became both became an economic and a political power in the region at the expense of nearby Mackinac Island. The Strangites also founded the town of St. James, which was named in honor of Strang. They constructed a road denominated "King's Highway" into the interior of the island that remains one of its primary thoroughfares. The Strangites cleared land; constructed cabins, farms and other improvements; and attempted to establish themselves permanently on the island.

In fact, Strang became powerful enough to force the "Gentiles", or non-Mormons, of Beaver Island to pay tithes to his church. "Gentiles", who refused were allegedly subjected to flogging or violently driven off their land claims.[6][7]

Irish Americans on the island, who were not welcome in St. James, first moved to a new settlement around Cable Bay, on Beaver Island's southern tip. The Ojibwe and Odawa population, on the other hand, fled to nearby Garden Island, where they sided invariably with the Strangites' enemies[8] to the point that Strang later alleged that the Indians had been, "armed and hunting me for my life."[9]

After first decreeing eleven days before the election that, "every Gentile family must come to the harbor and be baptized into the Church of Zion of leave the island within ten days",[10] Strang was unanimously elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1853 and again in 1855.

James J. Strang proclaimed himself "King of Heaven and Earth", and was crowned on 8 July 1850 inside a large log "tabernacle" that his adherents erected, in an elaborate coronation ceremony.[13] On him was bestowed a crown that a witness described as "a shiny metal ring with a cluster of glass stars in the front",[14] a royal red robe, shield, breastplate, and wooden scepter.[13]

Meanwhile, ships sailing near Beaver Island routinely, "sailed into a crack in the Lake", even during the summer, when shipwrecks in the region were highly unusual. During Strang's rule and for decades afterwards, allegations of Mormon acts of piracy, wrecking through the use of false light beacons and the cutting of anchor cables by Strangites on skiffs, the mass murder of male shipwreck survivors, and the subjecting of attractive female shipwreck survivors to forced marriage, continued to be commonly told by Beaver Island residents, as well as by Great Lakes sailors and fishermen.[15]

According to Strang's biographer Miles Harvey, there are numerous well-documented cases of groups of Strangites, who saw non-Mormons as the enemy, making marauding raids in settlements around the shores of Lake Michigan. Their acts included timber piracy, counterfeiting, home invasions, armed robbery, and horse theft in, and the theft of fishing equipment from the refugee fishermen in Mackinac Island.[17] Furthermore, on July 13, 1853, Mormon fishermen from Beaver Island fought a pitched battle on Lake Michigan against fishermen from what is now Charlevoix, Michigan.[18]

Strang, however, insisted through his newspaper that all of these charges were lies motivated by Anti-Mormonism.[16]

Strang and his adherents often conflicted with their neighbors on the island and adjacent locales. While claiming dominion of only his church, Strang tended to exert authority over non-Strangites on the island also, and was regularly accused of forcibly seizing their property and ordering physically assaults against them. Meanwhile, the island and surrounding County were ruled with Strang as the political boss, while the Strangites imposed both a monarchy and theocracy upon local government that violated both the American system of Republicanism and the separation of church and state. Even before the new County's creation, Strang was powerful enough to order the Treasurer of Mackinac County to surrender one tenth of Beaver Island's tax revenue to his church.[19]

Open hostility between the two groups frequently became violent, and a growing number of Irish-American refugees fled to Mackinac Island. Other Irish-Americans once assaulted Strangites at the post office and, in what is still called the "Battle of Whiskey Point", Strang fired a cannon at a private army of Irish-American fishermen who had come to retake the island and expel the Strangite church.[20]

Meanwhile, one former Strangite later recalled that more and more Mormon families were, "leading a double life, seemingly good Mormons, but only waiting for the opportunity to get away".[21] The beginning of the end came when Strang ordered all Mormon women to wear bloomers instead of dresses. When two Mormon women refused obedience, Strang punished them by having their husbands flogged, an act that was rendered less unpopular after one of them was discovered in flagrante delicto while committing adultery. While recovering from their floggings, both outraged husbands vowed revenge against Strang. On June 16, 1856, the United States Navy gunboat USS Michigan entered the harbor of St. James and Strang was invited aboard. As Strang walked along the dock the two Mormon flogging victims followed by several other disaffected Strangites repeatedly shot the Mormon king from behind and pistol-whipped him as he lay dying. The shooters then boarded the gunboat, which refused to surrender them to the Mormon Sheriff and instead sailed away and disembarked both men in Mackinac Island. No one was arrested, tried, or convicted of Strang's murder.

After Strang died of his wounds on July 9, 1856, mobs of dispossessed Irish fishermen from Mackinac Island and St. Helena Island arrived and expelled the Strangites, who then numbered approximately 2,600, from their claims on Beaver Island.

According to Frederick Stonehouse, "Whether Strang and his Mormons were guilty of the charges of piracy and murder their enemies levelled at them or not is unknown. In today's more politically correct climate, the feeling is that the charges were trumped up by their enemies, who were jealous of the success of the 'Saints'. As usual, the truth is likely somewhere between the two extremes"[23]

Why I stay in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Let me first say, that these are my reasons and not meant to persuade others to take this course. My 2 kids left the church and many of my friends especially gay or single friends have left. I understand that the pain that I feel and others feel is real and sometimes we have to get rid of the pain by leaving. I want to sort through why I stay by making this list and sharing it with you that you may know me better.

1. I have a testimony of the truth that Heavenly Father exists, that Jesus is the Christ, my Savior and Redeemer , that the Book of Mormon is scripture, that Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God and that we have a living Prophet today in Russell M Nelson. I have had many spiritual confirmations of that over the last 40 years.

2. The church changed my life for the better. I was addicted to pornography and addicted to casual sex with men. My sins were washed away and I believed that through repentance I could become a better person day by day. I loved the concept of a lay ministry that was unpaid. I gave and received many hours of service and love from members. I made great friends that are still treasures in my memories or still in life.

3. I love family history and the work that goes on in the Temples. I have worked in 3 temples for over 20 years and have had wonderful spiritual experiences doing the work and helping others on both sides of the veil.

4. I am stubborn and will not let homophobic ass holes run me off.

5. When I am marginalized or excluded due to my single divorced status, I feel the pain and the hurt of being excluded both in social opportunities and in doctrine being preached, I take solace in knowing that God is fair and that he and Jesus love me as I am not as other people think I should be.

6. I connect with other single gay men in and outside the church who love and support me and make it possible for me to endure the hate and misunderstanding that some members of the church hurl.

7.I see and understand the pain and hurt of young queer people in the church and I want to support them and make it better by challenging what is said and how it is said and let people know that I am here.

8. I am old and do not like change, so I stay.

9. I fear I will lose my testimony and love of he Savior if Ii leave.

10. I fear that I will be a bad example to my children and grand children if I leave.

11. I stay to defy false or fractured doctrine

12. i stay to seek what the Lord wants me to do for myself and for others.

They claim it’s simply Joseph Smith’s way of putting his own ideas into scriptures. Essay #14: What is Truth?, Pt. 4

I served in the England Coventry mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I was thrilled at the opportunity, and what added to my delight was that I was given the chance to serve in a foreign country, and the only language that I needed to learn was English. I felt like I had an advantage in that I’d been taught to speak that language since childhood. I did everything that was asked and expected of me to prepare myself to serve The Lord during that time. While I was preparing to serve, I was planning on a two year mission. Even when I had my final interview and my missionary application was submitted, I was planning on two years. By the time I received my call to serve (which incidentally was a mere 10 days), an announcement was made at the April 1982 session of General Conference, by President Gordon B. Hinkley (then a counselor in The First Presidency). He said that all missions for young men and young women would be 18 months. A lot of people asked me how I felt about that, and I told them I wasn’t sure, as I wasn’t in the mission field at that time. Today, I would answer that question this way: it is a testimony of how very aware God our Father is for all of His children.

I went on my mission in July 1982. I arrived in England in August of that same year, and I returned home January 19, 1984.

While I was serving, I was chased down streets, had doors slammed in my face, and was told that I was going to Hell, that Lucifer himself led The Church. I was threatened, yelled at, and overall persecuted for being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ. As awful as this sounds, however, it wasn’t very new to me, as I’d been ridiculed for my religious beliefs many times before then.

One of the most powerful sermons ever given by The Savior is what is now referred to as His “Sermon on the Mount”. It reads:

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is The Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in Heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

~Matthew 5:10-12

What’s interesting about this passage is that, in the verse preceding it, Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

Believers and followers of Jesus Christ and His teachings have always been scoffed at, teased, talked down to, hated, despised, and persecuted. Similarly, people can’t seem to leave The Church of Jesus Christ alone, even 203 years after Joseph Smith had his First Vision. We will now explore some of the questions and concerns that have been identified by some who question the veracity of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the truthfulness of which I again bear my testimony. I KNOW that it is His church. And although we may not know the answer to every question (which I shall henceforth be referring to as “concerns”), it does not mean that His Church hasn’t been restored in this, the “dispensation of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).

Concern #1: If God was able to create Adam and Eve from clay and the world out of nothing, then why did He have to have sex to create us in the premortal existence? Shouldn’t He be able to create our souls in ex-nihilo?

This concern is a little troubling to me. First of all, I had to look up what “ex-nihilo” meant. The Merriam/ Webster definition is “out of nothing”. As I pondered the idea of ex-nihilo, I looked up what some of the leaders of The Church have said on the subject, as they are theologians and scriptorians in their own rights.

The following quotes are from a talk entitled “The Creation”, given by Elder Russell M. Nelson at the April 2000 session of General Conference:

“It is difficult for mortal minds to comprehend the majesty of The Creation.

“I testify that the Earth and all life upon it are of divine origin. The Creation did not happen by chance. It did not come ex-nihilo (out of nothing). And human minds and hands able to build buildings or create computers are not accidental. It is God who made us and not we ourselves. We are His people! The Creation itself testifies of a Creator. We cannot disregard the divine in the Creation. Without our grateful awareness of God’s hand in The Creation, we would be just as oblivious to our Provider as are goldfish swimming in a bowl. With deep gratitude, we echo the words of the Psalmist, who said, ‘O Lord, how manifold are Thy works! in wisdom hast Thou made them all: the Earth is full of Thy riches.’”

This reminds me of what Alma said to Korihor in The Book of Mormon, “All things denote there is a God; yea even the Earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea and its motion, yea and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator” (Alma 30:44).

William Wordsworth penned the words:

“Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:...

But trailing clouds of glory do we come

From God, who is our home.”

The King James version of the Bible in Genesis 1:1-2 reads: “In the beginning, God created the Earth. And the Earth was without form, and void…..”

The Revised Standard Version of the Bible reads the same exact way.

The New International Version reads thusly: “In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Now the Earth was formless and empty……”

And lastly, the Christian Standard Bible reads the same way as the NIV of The Bible.

All scripture was written by the spirit of revelation. Having said that, it is important to know that all scripture should be understood and learned from a need for that same spirit.

As Jesus neared the end of His Earthly ministry, He said to His Disciples in John 15:26:

“But when The Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from The Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from The Father, He shall testify of Me.”

Notice how the word “comforter” is capitalized; this would indicate that The Comforter is someone’s name or title. The Comforter being referred to is The Holy Ghost. All three members of The Godhead are identified in this one little verse. As we read the scriptures and look for answers, The Comforter, also known as The Holy Ghost, will testify to our hearts and our minds that which is true.

Going back to the verses in Genesis, all four accounts testify that the Earth was originally a void. Merriam/Webster defines the word “void” as “containing nothing”. As I read these talks and scripture verses, I do not see any evidence that the Earth was created out of nothing. The Earth was without form, the definition of which is “the shape and structure of something as distinguished from its material” (Merriam /Webster). I think that the Earth was empty and unorganized. When God created this world, He organized it. He divided light from darkness; created the plants and the vegetation; divided the waters into oceans, streams, and lakes; placed all kinds of animals and insects on the world, each having its own purpose; and finally, placed man upon the Earth. I love all accounts of Genesis 1:26-27!

“And God said, Let us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth.

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole Earth, and the creatures that crawl on the Earth.’ So God created man in his own image; He created them male and female.”

The time that we were given in this life is precious. We were sent here to learn and to grow. We were sent here to develop faith, period.

And as to the manner of our spiritual creation? Ecclesiastes 12:7 (KJV) reads: “ Then shall the dust return to the Earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

Acts 17:29 (KJV) reads: “Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that The Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.” (Sidenote: The RSV of that same verse reads: “Being then God’s offspring…..”)

Herbrews 12:9 says: “Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?”

Doctrine & Covenants 29:30-35 gives us some very valuable doctrine regarding our spiritual origins:

“But remember that all My judgments are not given unto men; and as the words have gone forth out of My mouth even so shall they be fulfilled, that the first shall be last, and that the last shall be first in all things whatsoever I have created by the word of My power, which is the power of My Spirit.

For by the power of My Spirit created I them; yea, all things both spiritual and temporal—

First spiritual, secondly temporal, which is the beginning of My work; and again, first temporal, and secondly spiritual, which is the last of My work—

Speaking unto you that you may naturally understand; but unto Myself My works have no end, neither beginning; but it is given unto you that ye may understand, because ye have asked it of Me and are agreed.

Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto Me are spiritual, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal; neither any man, nor the children of men; neither Adam, your father, whom I created.

Behold, I gave unto him that he should be an agent unto himself; and I gave unto him commandment, but no temporal commandment gave I unto him, for My commandments are spiritual; they are not natural nor temporal, neither carnal nor sensual.”

How grateful am I for modern revelation that helps us understand that we are all spirit children of a kind and loving Heavenly Father! Even if you do not accept modern revelation, it is clear to see that we are of divine origin from the Bible passages I quoted. Modern revelation to the prophet Joseph Smith enhances, reinforces, and clarifies what the ancient prophets and Apostles tried to teach.

I can neither confirm nor dispel what was supposedly said by previous leaders of The Church. Many have taken what previous and even present leaders have said out of context. On the topic at hand, it is doctrinally sound to say that we were created spiritually before we were created temporally and that we all have a purpose to our individual time here on this beautiful Earth we call home.

I do not know exactly how we came to be created spiritually. One could assume certain things, and I believe that is ok. I know how we are created physically and that is a tremendous, beautiful, almost mystical process in and of itself. To speak of my Earthly parents in an irreverent manner is something that I would never do. Likewise, to speak of our spiritual creation is something that is and should be kept sacred and reverent. The love that one should hold for Earthly parentage is sacred. The love that one should hold for Heavenly parentage is even more sacred and holy. It has been said that we are not Earthly beings having a spiritual experience; rather, we are spiritual beings having an Earthly experience. I like that and I believe it to be true.

Final thoughts

My final thought on this very important concern is this: I do not believe that my Savior will ask me if I knew how my spirit was created when I stand before Him on The Day of Judgement. No, I believe that He and His Father will be more concerned with how I chose to spend my time, how much I loved His children, and how much faith and spiritual knowledge I acquired during my precious time on the Earth.

GOOD DEEDS ARE NOT EQUAL TO SALVATION 2

1 THERE was a certain man in CAESAREA called CORNELIUS, A CENTURION of what was called the Italian Regiment,

2 A DEVOUT man and one WHO FEARED GOD with all his household, WHO GAVE ALMS GENEROUSLY TO THE PEOPLE, and PRAYED to God always.

3 ABOUT the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!”

4 AND when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?”

So he said to him, “Your prayers and YOUR ALMS have come up for a memorial before God.

5 Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter.

6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. HE WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU MUST DO."

Acts 10:2-6 (NKJV)

• In the first part of this teaching we have been able to establish that good deeds or works are not equal to salvation.

- You cannot access God through good works, except through the faith in substitutionary death of Jesus Christ.

- If you believed in your heart and confessed with your mouth that Jesus Christ died for your sins and resurrected that you might be JUSTIFIED, you shall be saved:

"WHO WAS DELIVERED UP BECAUSE OF OUR OFFENSES, AND WAS RAISED BECAUSE OF OUR JUSTIFICATION [to make us right with God]" (Romans 4:25 NKJV).

READ: Romans 10:9-13

- Therefore, good works would not make you right with God. Islam and other religions of the world emphasized good works as the basis for being accepted by God. However, this is not true in Christianity.

- Salvation is purely by Grace, and that through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9-13).

• Now, apart from Islam and other false religions of the world, there is a sub-classification known as cults.

- They usually claim to be Christians, and that differentiate them from major false religions.

- Their doctrines may appear similar to biblical Christian doctrines, but they are significantly different and dangerous.

- Cults twist the Bible passages or Christian terms and give them a completely different meanings.

- They distorted teachings about Who God is and what Christ did accomplish for mankind from their true biblical meanings in order to suit the purposes of the group or its leader.

- Biblical terms like FAITH, SALVATION, HEALING, SIN, and HEAVEN are given definitions that are completely different to what the Bible teaches.

• For instance, in Mormonism [a cult group known as "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints"], it is claimed that a person can be saved by "faith in Christ."

THIS may sound similar to a genuine Christin doctrine, but it means different thing in Mormonism.

- They teach that all people have received a "general salvation" from Adam's original sin through Christ's sacrifice on the cross; however, once all people are resurrected, they will be judged according to their WORKS.

- According to Mormon teaching, these WORKS, and NOT FAITH IN CHRIST, are what will allow a person to BE FORGIVEN of his or her personal sins and BE SAVED.

- Among the eight works Mormons consider necessary for salvation are:

(i) Membership in the Mormon church; (ii) Doing work in Mormon temple;

(iii) Belief in Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, as God's prophet;

AND others.

- Without these works, the Mormons teach, a person will not be forgiven or saved on the Judgement Day.

THIS is, of course, a COMPLETELY FALSE, and it CONTRADICTS what the Bible teaches about SALVATION.

- The Mormon church, like many other cults, portrays itself as a Bible-believing, a truly Christian church, BUT DOES NOT BELIEVE, TEACH, or PRACTICE TRUE BIBLICAL DOCTRINES.

- Their teaching leads people away from a genuine SALVATION by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, and enslaves them to the deception of SALVATION BY WORKS!

• Note: Cults deny that Man, humans, can be saved by faith in Christ alone.

- Most cults reject all Christian churches and all Christians as "unsaved". They maintain that only their own members are truly saved:

1 BUT there were also FALSE PROPHETS AMONG THE PEOPLE, even as THERE WILL BE FALSE TEACHERS among you, who will secretly BRING IN DESTRUCTIVE HERESIES, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And MANY WILL FOLLOW THEIR DESTRUCTIVE WAYS, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 BY COVETOUSNESS THEY WILL EXPLOIT YOU WITH DECEPTIVE WORDS; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, AND THEIR DESTRUCTION DOES NOT SLUMBER" (2 Peter 2:1–3 (NKJV).

- They often claim to believe in and follow the Bible. They accuse the Bible of being corrupted or improperly translated. They use this as an excuse to rewrite the Bible and add to it.

- The JEHOVAH WITNESSES invented their own translation of the Bible and called it "The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures"

• Some of the heretical groups, also known as cults, are:

- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

- The Jehovah's Witnesses

- Christian Science

- The Unity School of Christianity

- The Unification church (Moonies)

- The Church of Scientology

- Falong Gong

- Eastern Lightning

- Spistism

- The Theosophical society

- Unitarianism

- The Children of God

- The Way International

- And many others

• NOTE: As with all false religions, the doctrines promoted by cults have their origin with demons:

1 NOW THE SPIRIT EXPRESSLY SAYS that in latter times SOME WILL DEPART FROM THE FAITH, GIVING HEED TO DECEIVING SPIRITS AND DOCTRINES OF DEMONS, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron" (1 Timothy 4:1,2 (NKJV).

- If you find yourself in any of these cults, the heretical groups, and you are just getting to know the truth; Take a step now and leave!

- know that Jesus loves you and would not want you to perish. Come out from there, God will receive you:

14 DO NOT BE UNEQUALLY YOKED TOGETHER WITH UNBELIEVERS. For what FELLOWSHIP has RIGHTEOUSNESS with LAWLESSNESS? And what COMMUNION has LIGHT with DARKNESS? 15 And what ACCORD has CHRIST with BELIAL? Or what part has a BELIEVER with an UNBELIEVER? 16 And what AGREEMENT has the TEMPLE OF GOD with IDOLS? FOR YOU ARE THE TEMPLE OF THE LIVING GOD. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE." 17 THEREFORE "COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM AND BE SEPARATE, SAYS THE LORD. Do not touch what is unclean, AND I WILL RECEIVE YOU." 18 "I WILL BE A FATHER TO YOU, AND YOU SHALL BE MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS, SAYS THE LORD ALMIGHTY" (2 Corinthians 6:14-18 NKJV).

As with Arthur Ford; the Warlock who Rev. Moon visited who told him about the Holy Spirit being male, it was Rev. Moon who decided he knew better than Arthur Ford or Grandmother Pak Wol-yong about Jehovah; yet Ms. Pak knew that the Holy Spirit of God was Male because she called herself ”His Wife”.

Rev. Moon did not believe her, or anyone else about the Holy Spirit; but he was and is still is completely wrong about this matter; and was in serious trouble because of it; as the Angel who came to me through a suddenly visible door in 1986 at the guestroom upstairs in my grandmother’s house at 1520 Willard St. in the City of St. Francis made quite clear.

It was the Angel of John of Patmos the Beloved who told me of the problems with Rev. Moon; and which were later elaborated upon when Hyo Jin Moon came and then ministered to me and even wrote a song with me about restoring his father; after my 40 days of Temptation in 2008 ([ 21 days in Canada ]) – ([ 19 days in America immediately after the 21 days in Canada ]) that ended with my Victory over Satan the Devil in the year 2009, when my 40 days in the Wilderness ended on January.

All this came after the 21 month course of Barack Obama when he became the Leader of the Third Israel here in the West, as when we ”took Egypt from within”; as Augustine also saw in Rome when he died in 430 AD; having separated from Satan with his mother Monica

This is what John the Baptist was to have done with Elisabeth his mother by believing her when she told him Mary came into the House already pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

John did not believe her; and neither did Rev. Moon believe her report; but she was in the position of the Porter at the Door of the House into the Kingdom of God; so that was a very big mistake; both for John and for his body; that of Rev. Moon who was to restore John at the ”Restoration of all things”.

Rev. Moon was to have Restored of all things starting with Elijah’s mission that John failed at, but Rev. Moon with his Korean bride did not do this; and got married instead in 1960; precipitating the Second Fall as the Korean Adam and Eve in whose position Rev. Moon and his wife fell when Rev. Moon had Extramarital Sex while married; and thus became a hypocrite of a Universal proportion called “that evil servant” in Matthew 24:48.

The Angel described the factors where Rev. Moon had left his position when he had me take the Vow to join the Most Ancient Order of Melchizedek; the Virgin Priesthood itself; and become a eunuch for the kingdom of heaven’s sake; and to go through the ”Death in Christ” 21 years later on October 24th; 2007.

This happened after I completed my 21 year course of Jacob during which I was instructed in the Kingdom of God by the Angel of John the Divine; called by the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith in his book in the section I Nephi 14:27 by the name of ”John” whom he also calls ”John the Revelator”.

Joseph Smith is thus my ”witness” as to the arrival of my Father’s servant John; as there is no other explanation of how Joseph Smith would have known that John would come to me and help me open the Revelation of Jesus Christ and see it was indeed the Book of Life of the Lamb.

Only my Acolytes believe my Father Jesus sent John to me to repair the damage that Rev. Moon had done; by ignoring the commands he was being given concerning the Providence; and of which regarding the shambles the Providence was in the Angel said I was now ”the Last Flower Child of the Resurrection”; who would be known as “The Wrath of the Lamb” for that reason, in my mission to the Unification Church and it’s errant shepherd: Rev. Moon; called in the Gospel of Luke “that evil servant”

(I ask this politely and curiously) why do you view faith as a disease? Have you always felt this way or did the conclusion come later in life?

The first part of your question is the longest one, so bear with me.

Firstly, I'm going to define what I mean by faith and how I use it on this blog, as history has shown that things go off the rails very quickly if I don't.

1 complete trust or confidence in someone or something: this restores one's faith in politicians.

2 strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

The first definition is a synonym of trust. That's not how I use "faith." When using definition #1, I use the word "trust" specifically to be clear about what I mean.

#2 is "belief without proof." Typically this functions as belief not just in spite of a lack of evidence, but because of a lack of evidence. This second definition is what my blog is about.

These two definitions are almost completely polar opposites, as we'll see in a moment.

The crux of it is that you cannot use faith to come to truth. There's nothing that someone can't believe based on faith alone. Everyone's faith based claim is held to be true, but all faith claims can't be true.

As Dr. Peter Boghossian points out, Islam claims Muhammad was the last prophet of Yahweh/Allah. Mormons say that Joseph Smith was a prophet. Both are faith traditions that their believers hold to be true. They don't even have to refer to the same god, but they're incompatible beliefs. One of them is wrong. Probably both. Neither of them will admit it. Neither of them can tell. There's no mechanism for putting them together and figuring out which one, just "I have faith," "no, I have faith."

If faith can lead to false beliefs and prevents the believer from finding out they're wrong, faith is a bad epistemology (epistemology refers to how we decide what is true).

Truth is not just derived merely from a correct answer, it's also being able to tell the limits of that answer and explain why it's correct. On a math exam, it's common for the teacher to still award you partial-points if you show the working was correct but made a late-stage arithmetic error, because it demonstrates you know the process.

If you just spit out the answer and don't explain how you got it, nobody can tell if you understood it or just got lucky. Lottery winners are sometimes heard to say something like "I knew it, I felt it, I knew somehow I was going to win, I just had this sense." No. You guessed and you got lucky. That's not knowing. Especially since thousands of other people probably had the same feeling and sensation and didn't win.

Truth isn't just about all the "hits," it's also about all the "misses." People pray to pass the exam and they do. They pray to beat cancer and they do. What about everyone who prayed and didn't pass the exam or didn't survive the cancer? God has something else in mind or works in mysterious ways. That's the same as not being able to derive truth. You can't tell when it will work and when it won't.

Truth may also have limits on it. That's why science is conditional. Earlier models of physics were later discovered to be a subset of a larger superset of laws of the physical universe. Quantum mechanics exists because we figured out that the laws we'd determined break down at the quantum level. There's a still larger story to be explored that is not yet fully answered.

Truth is also contingent upon being able to test or evaluate it. That's why all scientific principles are falsifiable and defeasible. Falsifiable means that there are known ways it could be shown to be false. Defeasibility means that a principle may need revision to be more accurate.

Evolution is falsifiable. It could be shown to be false if we found a bat with bird DNA. Or found a Precambrian rabbit. Evolution is also defeasible. It has been revised in the light of DNA and other discoveries. It didn't mean evolution was wrong, or that the larger idea was inaccurate, but we have a better understanding of how it works that explains more. Darwin's work is largely irrelevant at this point.

Faith can do none of these things. Its validity cannot be tested, its working cannot be demonstrated, and it cannot be falsified. Indeed, that's a supposed virtue of faith.

"Nothing could convince me that God is not real." See: Ken Ham. This is held to be a virtue. It's not. Since faith cannot be used to derive truth, it means a steadfast commitment to believing on irrational grounds.

And this is why I always use "trust" to refer to definition #1 from all the way back at the beginning. Trust can be falsified. You can figure out that you have been betrayed or that your trust was misplaced. You can grant conditional or qualified trust to new people. I don't have "faith" that my light will illuminate on when I turn on the switch. I have experience with it turning on, I know reasons why it may not turn on (globe is broken, light isn't plugged in, didn't pay the electric bill), and I don't have to invest more "faith"/trust in order to make it switch on. this is why the two definitions (above) are pretty much opposites. Nothing about trust-faith (definition #1) functions like faith-faith (definition #2).

Here's the interesting thing about ideas that are unfalsifiable. It means you cannot determine whether they are wrong. If you cannot determine whether they're wrong, correct and wrong look identical. If correct and wrong look identical, then you can't claim to be right any more than you can determine you were wrong. What you have is an incoherent proposition. Because by making it unfalsifiable, it's not only not-false, it's also not-true.

Truth is not always comforting. It's not always intuitive. It's doesn't need to conform to our preferences or our expectations. Deriving truth is a difficult task, and it can only be done by taking our egos and our identities out of the equation. Faith encourages, or even demands that you identify with the conclusion of a particular god, obscuring any path to truth. Evidence that your "dearly held" beliefs might not be true becomes a personal attack rather than a mistake in reasoning that can be corrected by adjusting your conclusions.

Humans have many cognitive flaws. We see patterns that aren't there in random events, we're prone to cognitive bias (only look for evidence that confirms existing beliefs) among others. These are the result of our imperfect evolution. The tribesman who mistakes shadows on the leaves for a tiger that isn't there will survive and go on to procreate. The tribesman who doesn't see the tiger that is there may not. They were useful to reproductive success, but they're not useful to knowledge and obtaining truth.

Faith is one of the few cognitive flaws that humans have consciously invented outright and seen it as a moral obligation to instil in others. (Another is victimhood culture.)

This cripples the ability of the faithful to learn. It actually creates a literal, cognitive learning disability. It retards the faithful individual's ability to update their understanding of the world based on new information, and discard old, outdated, incorrect notions.

Something that those who want to sell you a faith-based tradition, belief or ideology pretend is a good thing.

But we need an accurate understanding of our world to navigate it. How can we make good decisions when our truth-deriving mechanism is faulty, like faith is?

And if you’re mistaken about what’s good for you, then you can’t change the external conditions in your life to help you flourish as a human being.”

The quote from my subtitle is derived from one of Boghossian's lectures. I've had some... shall we say... "feedback" over the years about my blog title, and while I still have no intent to change it, I think his phrasing is more accurate and also more universally applicable, since it can also be applied to non-religious beliefs, such as conspiracy theories, antivax and Woke ideology. They are all faith-based but are not explicitly religious.

When I heard him say it, I realized it was a synonym of sorts for my blog title, and also a more useful explanation.

If you are a person of faith, my question to you is how, or even whether, you could determine that you were wrong? And if you have no way tell if you were wrong, how can you claim to be right? "I just have faith"?

The answer to the second part of your question is much easier.

I'd have to say that something always sat wrong with me when people said things like "faith is a virtue."

It's never made sense to me, but I couldn't figure out quite why until later in life. I didn't have the tools to understand epistemology, truth claims, fallacies, formal logic, and many other things that have helped me see how useless faith is, as I had intuitively concluded but not been able to articulate.

An open letter to the Apostles

To the Leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints:

I left because I didn’t believe anymore. There were too many promises that weren’t fulfilled, to many questions I was given false answers to, but more than anything else, I couldn’t take the stress of being a queer person in a space I didn’t feel like I belonged in. I could talk about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Mountain Meadows, the Kinderhook Plates, the stock portfolio, seer stones, blood atonement, “skins of darkness,” musket fire, “fence-sitters,” and a million things besides, but you know all that already.

I hope that with this letter, I can help the Church improve and change, because I still care about the Church, even though I no longer belong to it; that’s how I know it needs to change. It is still important to me. I am not trying to get people to leave the Church, that is not my goal. I’m not a Korihor trying to cause contention. But I need to tell my story.

While I was growing up, I believed it all. I was baptized at eight, regularly attended, served in quorum leaderships, and planned on going on a mission. Then, about when I was thirteen, I started experiencing what the Church calls “same-gender attraction.” I dislike this term greatly; it sounds like a disease. I prefer to say that I discovered I was bisexual.

I did not know what this was. My sexual education classes never covered it; I was never told what it was when I got “the talk”; my only experience with the word “gay” was in a middle school context, as an insult with no clear meaning. The only thing I did know was that this was not allowed. If marriage was ordained of God between a man and a woman, why did I have these -at the time- confusing feelings? If the only relationships I had any experience with were heterosexual, how was I even to know bisexuality existed?

And I didn’t, for years. As I wrestled with this, not even knowing what exactly I was feeling, I eventually, around age 16, learned the words to fit the feelings, to fit my identity. I knew who I was, what I was. By then, gay marriage had only just been legalized, and I -a couple months late- learned that this was a victory for me also.

This recognition put everything I thought I knew about marriage into a tailspin. I knew, I saw, and I was a part of, the Church’s effort to prevent this legalization. I read in Standards for Youth, (at the time called For the Strength of Youth) a short paragraph that made a huge impact on the rest of my life: “Homosexual and lesbian behavior is a serious sin. If you find yourself struggling with same-gender attraction or you are being persuaded to participate in inappropriate behavior, seek counsel from your parents and bishop. They will help you.” (Standards for Youth, Sexual Purity, emphasis added).

The thorough talking-to’s my closeted teen self received just before and after the legalization of gay marriage involved repetition of this paragraph ad nauseam. Breaking it down, it’s clear the degree to which this passage is shaped by uninformed conservatism. What does “behavior” mean? Since it’s a serious sin, you’d expect there to be clarification, right? Is hand-holding a serious sin? Hugs? An increased heart rate? A peck on the cheek? Or just sex? The way I was taught, it was clear the answer was “all of the above.”

The term “struggling” carries so much weight. The LDS church knew suffering, and still today in many places of in the world, members of the Church face repression. All people struggle with burdens, we struggle with disease, we struggle with sin, we struggle with conflict. Is “same-gender attraction” a burden, a disease, a sin, does it cause conflict? With the use of this word, the values are clear.

But in reality, the most painful part of this paragraph is the conclusion: “your parents and bishop … will help you.” They didn’t. They didn’t know how to, they still don’t. Because of the broad interpretation of unacceptable “behavior” and the belief that “same-gender attraction” is a “struggle,” they had no clue what they were dealing with.

Coming out was a traumatic experience. I was attending an all-boys boarding school at the time and caught feelings for a fellow student. We snuck around, living out a high school romance for a few weeks, until we were caught by the staff. Phone calls home were made, and I had the indescribable experience of having to explain to my parents both who I was, and what I had done, over the phone, one parent at a time, without seeing their faces.

Their immediate reaction was that I was too young to know if I was “really gay,” and that all sorts of strange feelings happen in boys my age. They didn’t really believe my description of myself; they negated my identity -they did not even recognize that this experience and these feelings were part of my identity- and mailed me a copy of The Miracle of Forgiveness. My experience with my bishop was likewise useless. He advised me that -through the atonement of Christ- all things are possible, and with suitable dedication to living the gospel, I could be made pure.

I never changed. I could not. It cannot be done. But I tried. I tried so hard.

Church attendance became more and more anxiety-inducing. I felt more and more guilty blessing the sacrament and giving blessings. I gave up on my childhood dream of being a missionary because I could longer believe the words I would have to say. I took temple preparation classes but could never bring myself to the bishop’s office to do the interview. When I started attending college and going to a YSA ward, I was no longer under my parent’s supervision. I kept going for a few months, until I was called as a ward missionary. I remember the day where I was on splits with the full-time missionaries, and we were going door-to-door in a neighborhood near my home. I just felt like we were harassing people in their homes on a Wednesday evening. It was the most uncomfortable experience of my life. I knew then that I didn’t believe in any of this anymore.

You know as well as I do that tens of thousands of people have had similar experiences that I have. We’ve felt the alienation, the sidelining, the people who don’t understand, the hand-wringing, the statement that all the burden lies on queer people to cure themselves, and it is the Church that must not change or cannot change. We keep being told “wickedness never was happiness,” (Alma 41:10) and that our lives of “unrepentant sin” are responsible for calamities and the disintegration of the family. We are being made into bogeymen in the closet, seeking “that all men might be miserable like unto [ourselves].” Endless inquiries are put forward, seeking to find the “cause of homosexuality” that we know are to find a “cure” for it. We are told we are suffering from these attractions, not that we have a unique identity, and certainly not that we are valuable.

But I know that these practices, and these doctrines, are not at the core of the Church. Members of the Church are commanded to “mourn with those that mourn … and comfort those that stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:9). All Christians are told, that as a mark of their religion, they are to “love one another; as I have loved you” (John 13:34) and that “On [this] hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:40). I know the Church can be better than it is right now; it is the Church itself that taught me that.

In nature, there is a direct correlation of both an organism’s and a species’ capacity for survival with its capacity for change. And I know the Church can change, because it has done it before, with interracial marriage, with polygamy, with African-Americans and the priesthood, with the Word of Wisdom, and with many things besides. Society changes all the time, and the Church changes with it.
