#even though I posted it on my Twitter art alt which is just the same fucking thing đ my inconsistency between the two is hilarious
I mentioned this briefly last night in my last big post so here it is: The Ashe&Grey to Kei&Go parallel meme. I wouldâve done a compare and contrast chart instead of listing out all the parallels but last time I did it the resolution was even worse then these đ besides just pointing out the similarities is funnier since Iâd say overall their vastly different characters- but these baseline similarities I canât help to notice even if I doubt it was a reference on ZXs part to Armageddon. Moral of the story they'd all be besties probably. (Also Iâm going to ramble in the tags once more-)

Dev's (C)Leo Biases,
Or,
A Comprehensive History of How Leonidas Became Nearly Everyone's Object of Thirst
So, among the Dragalia Lost team, it was rather well known that they admitted to a strong Cleo bias.
It's pretty easy to see, in anything from Cleo's early spate of alts, like Dragonyule and Summer in quick succession, to the utterly random unique outfits they flaunted in ch.9 that you can just tell they drew for funsies but really liked them and wanted to put them in the game despite it serving no real purpose...
The dev team just really, really loved Cleo and drawing her. But after they apparently used up their Cleo allowance to make Gala Cleo probably the single strongest character in the game at the time, they cooled it down a bit.
However, as much as they were apparently thirsting over Cleo, I would joke that somewhere along the way, some part of the dev team, feeling desperate now that the yearly Cleo Allowance was running dry as they prepared to release Gala Cleo, decided to find a new fixation to quench their addiction.
And since Cleo was off-limits, they turned to the next best thing: crossing out the C in Cleo to find their newest substitute Dev Thirst character.
That's right, we're talking about the one and only Leonidas.
Leonidas had kinda just melded into the background with the rest of the siblings at this point to my observations. Sure, he was a campaign antagonist. People weren't particularly clamoring for him in particular over the other siblings, though. Honestly, I'd wager Emile was more popular at this stage, even in a 'love to hate' sense, just because we'd already seen him so much.
But then, it started. Whether it was art like this being posted on their twitter just a few scant months before G!Cleo's debut...
...They just seemed to have a certain edge in artworks featuring Mr. Curry in a way to make one squint and tilt your head sideways.
For instance:
It's one of those cases where you just kinda get a feeling the artist(s) found x attractive in a way that simultaneously still can give you a moment of self-doubt if that's not just you projecting because there's no blatantly obvious signs, you know? Whether it's something about the posing, or angles, whatever it is, I got this air increasingly whenever they put out any Leonidas art.
Thankfully, they decided to put me out of my misery and just flat out make what's likely the single most suggestive wyrmprint (or honestly art piece in general since Dragalia was thankfully very very very tame) starring none other than, you guessed it, Leonidas.
(Secret Cygames/Nintendo conversation, probably: "As you can see, it's vitally important that we draw this character in a speedo with sparkles around him." Nintendo: "...I'll allow it. This time.")
Even if he puts on some more clothes in the refined version, we're still back to that air I mentioned, as the shot focuses almost entirely on him instead of the wildly popular Chelle or his pet panther (which, yes, seemed to be an actual pet of his):
Even the Ilia-damned funny chibi comics got in on this thirst train as it went on and made quite possibly the raunchiest joke in the entire 400+ comic run featuring Leonidas, even if the exact same joke didn't make the translation overseas, however they tried. You can see a brief breakdown of that in THIS post.
Not content to restrict it to art and comics, Leonidas also dropped this line that is permanently engraved into my mind with just how shocking it was to see anything of this caliber in Dragalia, in his baby brother's story to boot!
At this point, I could no longer deny it: the devs and artists had collectively acquired a new fixation to satiate their once insatiable Cleo appetite in the form of Mr. Currymeister. (Don't worry about Emile there, he's just drowning, he does that all the time in waist-high water)
And this attitude even extends to in-universe, too! People increasingly fawned over the first prince, who very much was filling in the role of 'this prince you know vs. his hotter and more competent elder brother', as virtually represented by my expert skills in Microsoft Paint artistry as such:
Naturally, there was only so much time before the people IRL could succumb to Leonidas Fever (and no, this time we're not talking about all the people who were so devoted to this dude to effectively set themselves into a fatal, firey, steroid-filled death!) at this unrelenting onslaught.
It was hard not to see comments such as these that started pouring in (and yes, all of these were just about Leonidas exclusively):
(I'll attribute the misspelling to being overcome with Leonidas Fever, a grave illness indeed!)
(Another serious symptom: the decline of any self-preservation instinct around Leonidas, who is indeed Very Dangerous and Will Kill You!)
Ahem. You get the picture. Thus concludes the slow, insidious buildup from just another sibling for Euden to probably commit a whoopsie-daisy fratricide in the future to one of the fandom's favorite menaces, all carefully plotted-out by the collective efforts of devs who were the first to succumb to the sickness...Right?
This concludes my professional historical report on this very serious issue that I suspect lingers to this day. The Fever has but been put into remission; it has not faded yet.
Extra:
So a long time ago I commented that some of the royal family seemed to have pointier teeth than normal, which I speculated because they deliberated giving a bit more 'draconic' traits to define dragonblood, and I didn't realize how pervasive this was until I saw Emile's model there. Look at his fang!
...
...How did I forget the weapon skin of Leo's gun is additionally named "Royal Dominator"?

i've been sitting on this post for a few days now and it's literally just, me making assumptions about kudos i've noticed on fics lately (particularly aci since i've been checking that fic every week for book club these past few months) and this'll make me seem more insane than i already come off but by this point. how much lower can i go?
just going from top to down as of today.
[ShibaLee] i know you from your art on here!! tumblr user shibaleeart i'm happy to see more people in potentially enjoying the stories this fandom has to offer :>
[reiscm] shizuchansmilk?? what are youuu doing here? i didn't know you read shizaya fic tbh and i was surprised to see you here suddenly, relatively recently too. does that mean you just started the fic then?? after at least a year of being in the fandom right? maybe this wasn't from your first time reading it (same) but at the very least it shows you visited it not too long ago i may be delusional in thinking i could be a contributing factor there because, why now? it's not like i'm the only aci advocate out there but i've probably been the most vocal about it around this time soo⌠well whatever it is, hope you had fun with it! i'm so curious what drrr comedian shizuchansmilk thinks about hit fanfiction a cheap imitation đď¸
i'm also recognising some of the other names around here like [anonymooose] and [durarasaiki] even though i haven't the faintest idea who they might be. i've just been seeing them lately across different shizaya fics which probably means these are the people doing their shizaya fic dive around this time. i have nothing more to add there i just, think it's cool noticing the same names across fics like yeah, we all feasting on the shizaya tag rn.
[ya_boi_twink] it took me a second to recall where i'd recognised your name from and then it hit me. i knoooow you! tumblr user yaboitwink in my notifs⌠i appreciate you, and i'm glad you liked the things i made for it c:
[bun_o_ween] oh i know you're here because of mr crapo. i hope you guys had fun with it! i wanna take the chance to also admit that like. the moment i found out you were that sebastian writer i experienced the wildest sense of deja vu. because. i had seen your name on ao3 before. but when i checked your fics there was no way i'd read a fic from you?? so then i realised i must have recognised you... through other kudos on other fics??? dude. i must sound crazy, i have no way of proving this because i actually don't remember what fics these were i just vaguely remember it was either bsd or tgcf? that i was looking at fics for, trying to find something to sate my hunger at the time. and i just remember, noticing your name across like a few of these fics in a row and thinking "heh someone else has been going down the same rabbit hole" AND NOW I SEE YOU AND CRAPO OF SHIZAYA FANDOM HITTING IT OFF it was surreal. like. my awareness of you had zero to do with black butler, i could not have predicted that you would have been the random ao3 user i'd seen apparently enjoying some of the same fics i was not too long ago. wow.
there are like two separate flamingo related names around here [niceflamingo] and [flamingoo] which doesn't mean anything but for some reason they are standing out enough for me to want to mention them. i feel like i've seen ao3 user flamingoo in the kudos of some other fic before but idk.
[Luzki] omg hey!! twitter artist vi_138_ woah hiii funny seeing you here :0 especially like. not so long ago? since i'd imagined you would've been aware of the fandom for a while since you seem more invested in the alts than shizuo and izaya in particular? well it was cool seeing that you'd read this one, i hope ya had fun!
[frogsarefriends] right under that is artist hallucxnating >:O i know they've read the fic already but it was cool to actually recognise their kudo down here, especially since it's like. not recognisable just from the name alone, but you've shared links to this ao3 as your writing so now i know it's you. my impression is that you came into the fandom through slavhew since, i'd connected the dots at some point that you two were friends which. made a lot of sense since i noticed you both started being active around here at the same time lol. but hey!! welcome to the club :D
[7FlyingPancakes7] this is one of the ones i'd noticed earlier on during book club, i distinctly remember checking a chapter while walking home one night (because i do that i guess) then BAM what the hell?? i just see tumblr user mari-lair's ao3 appear down there, totally out of nowhere for me. for context this was a writer from the tpn fandom i recognise from like 4 years ago? idk it's been a while, i didn't talk to them much but they were active in the fandom at the time so i'm familiar with their name. i haven't been keeping up with them but last i'd seen they seemed to be into tbhk with no indication as far as i was aware that they'd shown any interest in shizaya. nothing wrong with that it was just unexpected, so i was just like woah!! how did you get here? i am so curious how they may have come across this fic, was it some rec from a friend? how familiar are they with shizaya? how invested were they in the story and characters? enough to go down more of shizaya's greatest hits? anyways, that was just a fun little small world moment for me.
[psych0tastic] hey isn't thisâŚ. axietoh? like, the artist who used to draw shizaya like 5 years ago? what are they doing here so high up the list? đ¤ i have no clue lol i still follow them because i really like their art style but i hadn't noticed their interest in shizaya resurfacing... i suppose they just haven't been too active on these socials in general. anyways their name stood out to me and i was like, waitâŚ.. well it's a shocker seeing their name so high up here, were they reading this fic for the first time there or were they revisiting it and happened to have not kudo'd it until then? well anyways, it's nice to see they've revisted the fic within the last two years at least :0 that's cool to me.
[MiyukiWynter] dude i was feeling crazy just now trying to figure out where i'd recognised this name from because i'd swwooooorn i'd seen it from somewhere like as someone on twitter?? i think i was mixing them up in my mind with unrelated (as far as i'm aware) twitter user miiyankhr but turns out they're someone who's fics i've seen in the tags before. i haven't read them myself but apparently they just posted a new one two days ago so that's crazy.
[Dodomka] heyyy it's dodo from twitter, hellooo đ they've been the biggest supporter for my deep in the sauce fic tweets and for that i appreciate them very much :3 didn't expect to see them here tbh i wasn't aware of when they'd first read the fic but as i was expanding the list a few times to write up this post i noticed their name here and just thought that was neat. shout-out to them!
[mochi010] there's a user named mochi that has shown up in my twitter notifs somewhat regularly and they have nothing on their account so i have zero clue what they might be like outside from that they've been liking my shizuo and izaya retweets. their handle isn't even mochi so i have very little reason to believe this could be them but idk, maybe? no conclusion has been made here. well i already spent time writing and cleaning up the paragraph, guess i'm leaving it in.
shout-out to [ouiouipussay] and [ramenflavorpacketsnorter420] just for having some names that stand out lol. i don't recognise you from anywhere but, i guess now i will if i ever come across those names again.
[Stupidusernamepolicy] i struggled to find you amidst all these names for the writing of this post đ had to ctrl+f that shit. but i remember seeing your name here while i was going through the list some days before and being like "oh hey!! it's slavhew :)" but okay there's actually a tangent i've been wanting to go on from here.
outside of aci i've actually been noticing you and hallucxnating double duo'ing under some fics together, like after the story era which i'd reread after hallu reminded me of its existence in a reply, and also sacramental which i had reread because of your reply, lol. i find this quite funny, just like. this visual representation of you two reading and recommending fics with each other. then you talk about it on twitter and more people like me are visiting this fic too. chain reaction of sharing stories :)
ALSO [anonymooose] and [durarasaiki] spotted down here in some of these kudos too!! that's craazy. wow. i tell you guys i'm recognising these names i'm not just crazy đ
[NotElectricT] this took me a second to dig up again since it's quite buried down that list at this point but the plan i'd had in mind for this post was to end on this one since i saw them kudo it right in front of me (through the vc stream) and i didn't think this post would get as long as it did but... well i already wrote it đŹ but yeah, this is my good friend note! check out this art they made for, still one of their favourite chapters, sharks fly. it's sandwiched in between some squid game au they made for a gift exchange for me..... it's a long story i don't wanna talk about it (embarrassing......)
but what i do wanna talk about!! is how note (referred to as "patient zero" regarding aci book club by the only other patient lol) just decided to read this fic completely of their own volition?? i didn't tell them to do that and for sure didn't expect them of all people to try reading it, ever (they're not really a fic reader) but they just did that, two years ago. and that was like, insane to me at the time because it's seriously so out of their depth guys they don't do enemies to lovers.... they still don't lol. but i was insane about this fic back then with no one to really be insane about it to so i just yelled about it to these friends out of context and i guess???? that was convincing enough to get this one to start the longest fic they'd ever read đ
i had much fun having someone experience the fic i'd been insane over..... like i'm smiling about it rn thinking about the time i did a live reading of the chainsaw man (as i like to call him) chapter which was so fun i kinda forgot i had a hamilton musical i was supposed to watch that evening... that was awkward. and other chats we exchanged regarding the fic (they were reading chapters whenever they felt like it which i enjoyed because i like pacing these things out) but for some reason (i think things just happened around the time that disrupted the momentum) they never made it past chapter 26 đ which was tragic to me but oh well....
well i'm am even more insane about this fic now because of this convoluted chain of events that gradually built and cascaded me towards whatever the fuck i'm doing now!! god. i've never made so much, anything, like ever. until now. because both note and rosa (who has not kudo'd this fic as far as i'm aware lol) made the decision beyond my expectations to commit to, a book club. which i organised. and i've been having a lot of fun! so much fun, there's all this wild "marketing" stuff i've been churning out in record fucking time by my standards. i've never felt so creatively fulfilled dude, never finished a thing in my life until these past few months. so that's awesome, and it's in large part because of note having committed to this fic again. so that's some of the story behind that one kudo haha.
and now we're at chapter 49, we're supposed to be talking about it tomorrow, which is today by now since it's 1 am but uhhhhhhh writing is so hard. i was supposed to just be cleaning up this draft i'd written like 5 days ago? i am now very hungry. there's actually more i'd drafted up from here just from more names i recognised as i kept expanding the kudo list that day buuuut i'm fuckeeeen cutting this off right here. i need to stop. the end.

I've been feeling very Ghostwire: Tokyo-y lately but I'm also having a massive art block so I can't draw anything. Even though I miss doodling KK so much. But I still have the power to talk about it, so I'm going to make a list of some GW:T AUs I have so far! Just so my head won't explode from containing it.
Oh and don't forget to check the alt texts for the image, it has more informations :)
First of all, of course we have the Everybody Lives AU. No explanation needed, except maybe that my version of this has KK, Erika, Akito, and Mari all with the final stage of affinity unlocked (in other words, powers!) and they're all working together with Rinko, Ed and Dale. I also wrote a fic with this AU, posted here.
I call this one Core AU. It's where post-game everything is the same except KK stayed inside Akito's body as his core. (There's a lot of explanation needed on this. I'm leaving that part to Ed.) The full name of this AU is It's all about learning to live together, inspired by KK's line during the final boss fight in the game. So the story is mostly about, well, actually learning to live together.
Soujutsuki!KK AU. Post-game, KK got his body back but it has some... modifications. He got... umm... onificated... and could turn into the Soujutsuki form when in another world (just like Yaseotoko.) KK has full control of everything, though.
Next one is Purifier!Akito AU. (I don't have any drawings of this AU yet, sorry.) This one is basically an actual post-game where Akito is trying to go back into living normally but he just can't ignore the things happening around him and is still trying to resolve it any way he can (he doesn't have powers, but still have access to things like the bow/arrow and kifuda.) Until one day he meet again with the Tatari, who keeps calling him Purifier, which make him mad because "KK is dead, I'm not him." But the Tatari responded calmly with "aren't you the new Purifier?" (Akito will end up unlocking his powers later because he keeps involving himself in underworldy stuff.)
Now, I know I'm really focused on Canon Compliant and Canon Divergent AUs but I have something that isn't that. Megitsune!Akito AU. Where KK is just trying to live his life as a detective, ignoring his 'sixth sense' he knows he has (it's actually really bothering him.) But one day, he saw someone that he knows isn't a human, so he followed them. They turned out to be a Kitsune. (Chaos ensues. Or something like that.)
I have more, obviously, but I think five is enough to put in this post. Also, a lot of this is inspired by other people in this fandom!! (Though mostly the JP side on Twitter because I'm basically just lurking between them.) It's so lovely!

For the disability pride asks <3<3
7) what's a struggle you wish more people talked about?
15) what does disability pride mean to you?
16) free space to talk about whatever disability issue or experience you want !
7 - I think I wish more people talked about dealing with disabilities and the diagnostic process without a support system (especially family). a lot of online creators especially on youtube either don't talk about that or their experience is/was having a support system they could fall back on when doctors were being shitty. also known as just being doctors. which as a young teenager being told I was "just stressed" when I actually have an autoimmune disease attacking my brain and More.... it could have been really meaningful to have Something that explained like. you are not Wrong. the people around you just fucking suck.
15 - for me disability pride is a lot about working towards being proud of myself even if/when I can't live up to the expectations of people who don't understand? I find I less want to promote awareness and more want to work on actually. being able to like and be proud of myself as I am with my disabilities and limitations.
16 - this is the question that made this take so long because I wanted to Find the post I am thinking of and make sure I was Correct. there was this post that crossed my dash a while ago that was like. drawing of Twitter discourse as an ouroboros. and then following that was the same thing but with the twitter bird logo. and the person who did the image description (as they were *not* on the original posts) described them as emojis rather than drawings/art/whatever. and it didn't like Start anything but a couple comments were made like "this is art drawn by [person] actually". which prompted Someone to add in the tags a comment which amounted to "do you not know people draw emojis". so the original poster responds that yes of course emojis have artists. these are not Technically emojis. so they said it because they Know who drew it, it was their friend who was not credited in the description...
so all of that to say. i don't think there was anything Wrong with that though im a little...on the fence...about people directly responding to/interacting with image descriptions.
but when it is the creator of the post! if you have corrections just. add the description with your changes to the original post. but also just. the comment of "this artist was not credited in the description" just kind of stood out as many people just generally are not very aware of the purpose of image descriptions. most people know they exist and are an accessibility tool for blind people but. if the artist signature isn't in the image. why would it be in the description. the same goes for IDs that are in small text, or only in alt text, stuff like that. which I don't often bring up to anyone online because it is. so frustrating to me. I lost a majority of my sight in about a year and a half which is a very short time so the frustration is probably amplified by that, too. but I Really wish more people would actually take the time to figure it out themselves.
also on that same topic. if you are not the original poster and you are making an image description. please Don't add comments before/after the ID. do that in a separate reblog.
anyways. that was a lot more than probably asked for...but now I am done.

Dez (accidentally) deleted all of her tumblr blogs at one point but remade under @ rubacava.
Another instance of her transphobic behavior is shown through her posting a white supremacist / antisemetic wojak meme with a transgender person hanging just off screen, captioned âThough for everyone who may check this blog yes i hate trannies <3âÂ
A screenshot is linked here. Proceed with caution.
She has also liked a post from a TERF blog.

J (trans male) confronted Dez (cis female) on this cissexist remark in a server.
[Transcript: A Discord screenshot of Dez, saying âTfw im gonna have to draw an ugly musty penis during the first class of lockdown since octoberâ proceeded with a reaction image of CallMeCarson crying.]
This was brought up in DMs.
[Transcript: A Discord screenshot of a conversation between Dez and J.
Dez: I'm sorry but I don't see how my comments were cissexist? I just find penises gross and unattractive, whether theyre attached to a cis man or not.
I dont get how its cissexist because i didnt assume anyone was cis? I didnt make fun of cis men i made fun of penises which i think are gross
And not all men have penises and some trans women/amab nbs don't have penises either
J: It's more so blanket statements like that that make people uncomfortable even if you didn't have trans people in mindÂ
even if you personally find penises gross it's kind of Ehh to joke about especially since there are some transfem people in chatÂ
Dez: Oh.
Well they can go 41% about it.
J: What?Â
Dez, why would you make a joke like that.]
[Transcript continued.
J: Dez, weâve been friends for years, what would even motivate you to make a comment so horrible? What the hell is going on with you?
Dez: Iâve been transphobic the whole time (DEADNAME)
J: Iâm extremely disappointed in you Dez. I had nothing but good things to say to you and I really donât know why you would change, especially since we've known each other for a long time. You're going to hurt a lot of people who looked up to you.
we all loved you a lot and i have no idea why you'd suddenly turn around on years of friendship to be like this but hey, I canât control your life. If you want to be transphobic, fine. But I donât think anyone is going to want to associate with you anymore especially not in this friend circle.
Dez: I understand that.
Hope you can find someone else to draw your homophobic fujobait porn OCs this christmas.]
J brought this up with T, and this proceeded.
[TW SUICIDE]
[Transcript: A Discord screenshot of a conversation between Dez and T.
T: hey J just showed me what you said, and before i block you, i need to know: why? Why were you friends with us for so long and made trans friendly content in the past and then you suddenly turn like this? what was the point??? What the fuck were you gaining from being friends with people you hate? What the FUCK?
Dez proceeds to send a video.]
Content of the video: âphase 1 being someone questioning if theyre a woman, phase 2 being that they say theyre a woman, and it cuts to a loud gunshot and a ms paint stick man having shot themselves on a tableâ
[Transcript continued.
Dez: I was transphobic long before 4chan
I mean transphobia isn't even real
T: donât tell me to calm down!!! what the fuck was the point of any of this?? WHY WERE YOU EVEN OUR FRIEND
What did you get out of any of this???!]
A link of a google doc will be in the replies.

An effortpost on making ASCII art in 2021
Because an anon asked how to get started and where to find the characters, and I accidentally removed their ask when typing my response.
The characters you want to use depends on what kind of ASCII you want to make, and where you'll be posting it!
This site contains all "printable" and "extended" ASCII characters, and their corresponding Alt codes for easy typing. Printable characters are everything you see labeled on a physical QWERTY keyboard, and are the only characters you can use if you are using a non-variable width font such as Courier. Extended are characters like Ć and ÂŽ.
This is what Courier/code font looks like. Every ASCII character is the same width, so any ASCII you make like this will retain its form if you post it in Discord, Twitch, other sites with a "code" function. The tradeoff is you have less detail to work with unless you make the ASCII art huge.
This generator turns uploaded images into "dot matrix" ASCII that only use periods. You commonly see these in Twitch chat and such.
The art I make uses the non-variable width font Arial. Non-variable width fonts are what you see everywhere these days; this tumblr post is using non-variable width! You can get more detailed ASCII art out of these fonts, but you can only reliably copy/paste them in very few online spaces (which is why I can only share my art via screenshots). No one has yet made an ASCII generator in this style; everything is made manually. I have collected a list of tutorials on my site that cover this style and the most useful characters in the extended ASCII table. Iâll probably make one myself sooner or later.
If you want to go even further beyond, Kaomoji is big right now.
(Â´ď˝Ąâ˘ Ď â˘ď˝Ą`)
Where the old-school western emoticon game stalled over a decade ago, Japanese emoticons have proliferated. These use a combination of ASCII and Unicode characters. You might think of Unicode as âliterally everything you donât see in the ASCII table." There are shortcuts for inserting Unicode characters on Windows desktop, which this Microsoft article goes into a lot of detail about (as well as inserting plain ASCII characters). Since Unicode covers thousands of characters, I can't make any recommendations on how to find ones you like, which is why I linked the Kaomoji site which will let you curate specific characters.
I have little personal advice to offer anyone who wants to go full weeb and learn Japanese ASCII art, better known as AA, technically known as Shift_JIS (SJIS) Art. Even the few but persistent Japanese users who still make AA use specialized software that's tuned to the format of the image boards they post their work on. Like Kaomoji though, here is a site that archives more AA than I've seen anywhere else, along with the source text so you can copy/paste, and curate characters. It's...kind of a pain to use, but even if you just want to look at AA, it's a pro click. Beyond that, you can also follow AA makers on Twitter and maybe even ask them questions! For search references, the tag for AA on Twitter and Pixiv is "#ă˘ăšăăźă˘ăźă".
Will update and reblog this post if I think of more info but that's the large of it. I have trouble keeping to an update schedule for this blog but I will answer any asks in a short time so please ask any questions you have!

I saw your post comparing the finales of odd taxi and wonder egg and i agree the odd taxi finale was TIGHT - i was wondering though if you knew about the production issues on wep and that's why they had that recap episode. the actual actual finale just came out today!
Hey ^^.
Yeah, I'm aware of the production issues on WEP and I've seen the proper finale. Just gonna go through my understanding of them below so sorry if I repeat stuff you're already aware of!
(EDIT: This post got a lot longer than I intended so I put it under a readmore but it basically goes into my opinion on the production stuff as well as how the finale contradicts the groundwork previously laid out)
From what I gather, they've had scheduling issues throughout which led to them having to bring in a lot of foreign animators (I think ANN actually did an interview with some of the translators involved in relaying information between production and the animators - I'll see if I can find that after this). There were also instances where I believe people involved in the production literally ended up in hospital due to overwork.
In terms of the finale episode itself, I think this reddit post gives the gist of the timeline:
(Please keep in mind that though this is an example from just the finale, it happened for several episodes that they only finished with hours to spare - this actually led to the episode being released late on the Eng sub side a couple of times)
I think with WEP, it is going to become difficult to untangle where the issues arise from the production problems and where it's down to the actual writing and directing.
The show definitely started strong and in terms of tackling the really dicey topics it did superbly (I remember my only real issue on that end prior to the finale was the Accas commenting on "male vs female suicides" and iirc that was clarified on Twitter as *not* being the views of the writers - and the Accas acting that way tied in massively with their backstory in the Frill episode and how they clearly don't understand.) The art and animation throughout? Honestly, if I didn't know already about the production issues from outside sources like Twitter I'm not sure I would've been able to tell? Because for the most part it was ridiculously solid (though of course there were still signs - namely the midpoint recap episode and the way they stopped interweaving flower language near the very end and the sheer number of stills they used in ep 13).
Where the finale fell down in my eyes was the very thing that brought me into the series in the first place, aka how it handled the difficult topics. The narrative of the series is fairly strong early on, about how various societal factors contribute towards suicides, especially in young girls. This starts to falter somewhat down the latter end, though my personal opinion is that the Frill stuff doesn't discount the societal factors, but rather the pacing was off with her introduction and so there was no way the Frill and AI angle would have time to be fully explored and resolved within the remaining episodes. Anyway, society and how it impacts on minors with fairly nuanced takes in terms of how adults can take advantage of power dynamics over minors. Thereâs also the more straightforward character part about how the main four start as outsiders but end up actually becoming proper friends, hanging out outside of the egg quests.
With this in mind, there are some places where the final episode actively went against the previously laid groundwork:
In the Frill ep, we see Himari claiming to Ura-Acca that sheâll be âmarriableâ when she grows up, with the implication that this is pretty horrifying just hammered in by how she then mimics Frill with the âpopâ noise. And then separately from this, we see that Sawaki has painted art of Ai as a grown-up and says âsomeday youâll be a wonderful, adult woman like your motherâ. Her mother who, I have to point out here, he is dating. There are various other red flags throughout the episodes but Iâm just highlighting this one because itâs a parallel within the series itself. In the finale what we get is Sawaki saying that truth behind Koitoâs suicide (which he was heavily implicated in) was âKoito tried to put advances on me, yelled rape accusations, then fell off a buildingâ. And that scene ends with alt!Koito saying âMr Sawaki is kindâ. The entire series had been setting up red flags in terms of Sawakiâs relationship with Koito pre-series as well as his behaviour towards Ai and then the resolution is just âKoito was lying about rape threats and Sawaki is innocentâ. Like, you canât even argue this is somehow commentary on how there can be witch hunts when people make false accusations because nothing happened to Sawaki. Itâs just plain and simple going against both Sawakiâs suspicious behaviour *and* undermining a lot of the previous points made about sexual harassment by having it be that Koito was lying. (Sidenote: If you *did* want to have something about people lying about sexual harassment without it undermining the rest of the series, you would have put it midway and had counter examples throughout, not put it at the very end so it becomes the final say, so to speak.)
Ura-Acca, Acca, and Frill. I personally think some of this is down to pacing issues which were present earlier than the finale compounded by the overall production issues, but regardless, this entire plotline with Frill and her minions was set up a few episodes prior to the finale. In the finale itself, the only time we even see Frill is in Neiruâs dream where her only role is to reveal that Neiru is an AI (and bring up the potential parallels that could be contained in that only to immediately go âbut we donât have time to unpack thatâ). The Accas just exist to say to Ai about the eggs, with no mention of the Warriors of Eros or Fear of Death stuff, despite how all four girls managed to achieve their goals. There is just no resolution or even acknowledgement as to this storyline.
This one is more subjective and tied in to how Neiru was handled. A big point which is shown during the series but explicitly laid out in ep 12 is how Ai has friends now and has grown throughout the series. Donât get me wrong, I understand that people drift and that they no longer have the egg quests tying them together. But at the same time, why make the point near the end when Ai is talking to her alt!self that she has friends and has grown now if youâre then just going to undo that at the final hurdle. (I could go into the Neiru stuff specifically but I think this post has gotten long enough and Iâd tangent even further from talking about consistency throughout the series into the general writing of the last episode)
In retrospect, I do think you can tell from episode 12 that it was going to be almost impossible for WEP to stick the landing from the pieces that we had there, but I think it could have been salvageable if they'd just kept their own themes and narrative consistent with the rest of the show.

smptwt as of 04/07/2020
Right. You asked for it, so you shall recieve. Below the cut is probably one of the most thought-out, in-depth, hopefully unbiased (but probably not) and above all helpful accounts of what the fuck is happening in the smplive and lunch club fandoms right now. I will be covering everything I can- but in the case that Iâve forgotten something, please let me know so I can have a crack at making an update.
Before the cut, Iâd just like to link my first three posts about this same topic, covering my thoughts and the events of the last couple of months of drama. It feels so strange that Iâve made so many of these, but as long as they help people, Iâll keep making them.
Part 1:Â https://crunchy-corvid.tumblr.com/post/619547090403622912/the-cscoopsmptwt-drama
Part 2:Â https://crunchy-corvid.tumblr.com/post/619746266158661633/more-on-smptwt-long-post
Part 3:Â https://crunchy-corvid.tumblr.com/post/619886809143476225/smptwt-part-3-030620
Iâd like to preface this with a huge thank you to everyone who helped me collect and compile information for this post- and those who helped censor twitter handles and edit screenshots. Without you, this post would have never been made.Â
Thank you to everyone on the Cancelled Heaven discord server:Â Â https://discord.gg/emrh2u
Now, onto the thing.
So weâll start at the beginning with the easiest âdramaâ (I hate calling it that) to cover. Charlie (slimecicle) tweeted on his second account and it caused a little upset. Itâs not much but it feeds into a greater conversation that I think is relevant here:Â
Weâll start with Charlieâs original point, then move on to the reply. Obviously, this post was poorly timed, because everyone thought it was about the Cooper (cscoop) drama, when in reality it was just a general comment. I saw a lot of replies along the lines of âitâs okay you can @ cscoopâ and similar things. If youâve read my previous posts youâll know how I feel about the Cooper situation, but regardless, there are a few reasons why this is a Bad Take/poor interpretation of what Charlie said.
Charlie and Cooper are friends. They havenât fallen out as far as we know. Charlie is left-wing, and definately doesnât seem like the kind of person to be friends with someone who is racist/transphobic/sexist etc. So why would he be talking about Cooper in this post?Â
Also, Charlie is clearly talking about people who still say slurs, not people who have said slurs in the past. This is how I read it, a jab at streamers and gamers who use âdark humourâ to justifty their actions. A lot of people seemed to relate this to Cooper, despite him never trying to justify his use of slurs. The people who did try to justify his actions this way were fans, not the man himself. So again, this post doesnât relate to Cooper.
On to the reply, which sparks a different conversation all together. While I see where the commenter is coming from, and agree with them to an extent, Charlie is allowed to have his own opinion on the matter. And he is right. Using insulting language against heterosexual people does create a larger divide and doesnât get anyone on our âsideâ. It just makes us look immature and causes a lot of straight cis people to assume that we hate them.Â
On the other hand, I do think that saying things like âdisgusting hetsâ can be a funny joke if you are saying it to your friends who donât have any issue with it. You probably shouldnât get into the habit of saying things like that though, just in case you actually hurt someone with your words. Both sides of the argument have pros and cons, so anyone angry at Charlie for his opinion really have no reason to be.
Charlieâs reponse to this comment was reasonable, responsible, and mature, and he is clearly showing that he understands the concerns of his audience. This is all Iâll say about Charlie in this post. Honestly, heâs generally unproblematic and âsafeâ to keep watching, if you enjoy a very drama-free environment. Have fun!
Now Iâll move on to Ted. Heâs made some great points recently about cancel culture which I strongly agree with. Hereâs his first tweets:
I donât have much to add here, this is perfectly valid in my opinion- though I feel like sometimes you can tell a lot about a person by the people they follow. For example, if someone follows Trump, Ben Shapiro, and a bunch of right-wing youtubers, they probably agree with a lot of the things they say. But I think the point Ted is trying to make is that he shouldnât be harassed about drama his friends fall into. If he isnât involved, leave him out of it.Â
Next weâll take a look at his tweets on stans, probably sparked by the drama with Carson, which I will be talking about later.Â
Again, I have no issue with what Ted is saying here. His idea is a good one, and a fun way to distinguish casual fans from people who create art, content, and (appropriate) fanfiction for the âflandomâ!Â
Basically, how I see it, is that a âfanâ is a casual viewer who doesnât really get involved in the flandom, maybe posting about smplive and/or lunch club occasionally, but not being too involved. A âflanâ is someone who interracts a lot, creates art and fiction that respects boundaries, and posts more about the boys than a casual fan does. A âstanâ is a stalker-fan, creepy and obsessive, too invested, maybe creates art and fiction that crosses boundaries, and obsessively posts about the boys.
I think this new terminology is really cool and Ted is smart for coming up with it (also, probably hungry when coming up with it too). I think that the term âstanâ should be thrown out and used to describe the âbadâ side of fandoms. There is a risk that people will hide behind the term âflanâ to disguise the fact that they are a stan, but this is still a good step foward.Â
But youâre not here to listen to me ramble about Ted or Charlie. Youâre here for Carson. So letâs get on with it.
Carson made a series of tweets talking about stans, much like Ted did later. He seemed tired of stans harassing him about his friends, a sentiment shared by Ted (who faced very minimal backlash over his tweets). Hereâs what he said:
Which is something I fully agree with. For big content creators like Carson and his friends, stan culture is absolutely insane. Recently theyâve been trying to âcatch outâ many people who are part of smplive and/or lunch club, most obviously with Cooper and Schlatt but Iâve seen the others getting âcalled outâ too. Carsonâs anti-stan stance is well-known in the flandom (yes I am using that word get used to it) so these tweets didnât surprise me.Â
For some reason stans seem to think that if one creator is okay with their behaviour, every other creator is too. This is not the case. Carson was within his full right to say these things about stans.
Obviously the replies got out of hand. People became horribly angry very quickly, and clearly Carson had already had enough because pretty soon he started blocking stan accounts- which only made them more mad.
Of course, there were supporters and anti-stan comments out there too, such as this fun exchange:
But a whole lot of people got angry. Carson was trending for a while, too, after he started blocking stans. Unfortunately some people did get wrongfully blocked, which sucks, sure, but use of an alt account or logging off of twitter can solve that problem (this can also be said for stan accounts. Carson didnât stop any of them from viewing his content, just blocked them so that he didnât have to see their tweets).
Carson did this for his own mental health. After a long conversation with older people who have been in fandoms for decades, I can tell you that being at the top is always hell. New threads created about you every day, friends you canât trust, and people giving you shit for things other people said. I canât imagine how someone as popular as Carson has dealt with this for so long.
People who were blocked started to claim that they were having panic attacks, that they hyperfixate so they canât help being obsessive, and that Carson doesnât care about mental health for these reasons. They said some pretty toxic and manipulative things and a lot of people clearly didnât know what they were talking about:
First of all, these comments on the Katerino and Fitz situation are honestly disgusting. These people are only proving Carsonâs point that stans will be super supportive one second and turn around to hate you the next. To bring up something like this, something completely unrelated and highly personal- knowing Carson will see- is disgraceful. To speculate about a relationship that Carson has explicitly stated he doesnât want people to speculate about just to try and make a point? Horrible.
A lot of stans seem to have this âwe made you famous so we dictate how you feelâ mentality, which I hate. Exactly as the reply says, they sound like toxic parents with these words. To think you deserve ârespectâ from someone after accusing their friends of horrible things and harassing them to the point that they block you is so manipulative and quite frankly cruel.
Again, Carson has the right to block anyone he wants. Creators are not your friends, they are entertainment. If you are making them upset and harassing them, you shouldnât get mad when they block you.Â
Listen. It can be tough, finding out that someone you look up to has blocked you. Yes, Iâm sure people had a not-so-nice time with their mental health when it happened to them. But in most cases, they were blocked for a reason. Some people were even literally asking to get blocked and then got mad when they did. But again, no one has been barred from viewing Carsonâs content. He simply blocked people who he didnât want to see in his comments section.
You have freedom of speech, but you donât have freedom from consequence. If you say something that hurts someone else, youâre not always going to be free from their judgement.Â
Carson has been very open about his own struggles with depression and imposter syndrome recently, and people are viewing his actions as... hypocritical? This is flawed logic. Carson blocked stans because they were bad for his mental health, the fact that some claim to have had âpanic attacksâ as a result is not on him. He has the autonomy to block who he wants to block.Â
Wilbur Soot made some comments about the situation, which can be found in this video from 7 minutes 30 seconds in, and goes until 10 minutes and 11 seconds in:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/667971714
What Wilbur says here is completely understandable. He doesnât have a problem with stans, but doesnât speak for anyone but himself. Just because one person is okay with something doesnât mean someone else is, too.Â
Also, a lot of people think that itâs okay to hate on someone like Carson or Schlatt, then turn around and stan Wilbur, which is kind of fucked up, because theyâre friends in real life. How would you feel if someone was super nice to you, then turned around and harassed your friends?
A lot of people claimed to have âhyperfixationsâ on Carson or lunch club, which they used as an excuse to be obsessive and creepy. This is bullshit, but someone else explained it a lot better than I could:
And I absolutely agree with this. You cannot use neurodivergence to explain away your creepiness. Thatâs just offensive to people who do hyperfixate, and leads to even more problems and misunderstandings.
Carson did a stream much later where he talked about all of these things, and boy did that go well (not). Here is a clip of him talking about hyperfixations:
https://m.twitch.tv/clip/SuaveBlushingDotterelBCWarrior
Now, hereâs where my support for Carson falters. He should have done more research on what hyperfixations really are before he said things about them. He hurt some people with what he said, and just saying heâs uneducated on the topic isnât really an excuse.
HOWEVER. Carson was given very little time to research (about 24 hours between his original tweets and his stream) and, more importantly, it is very obvious that the use of the term âhyperfixationâ has been warped and manipulated by stans who are misusing the term to excuse their behaviour. Carson probably saw stans using it and assumed it was something synonomous with âobsessionsâ.
What he said was poorly worded, but the point he was making is the same as the (much more researched and informative) tweet above. Anyone getting mad that he is somehow âinvalidating mental health or autismâ with his comments clearly donât understand the point he was trying to make in the first place.
And hereâs a clip of Connor talking about it, too, as well as defending Carsonâs right to block people as he wishes:
https://www.twitch.tv/connoreatspants/clip/YummySlickPlumageSpicyBoy
https://www.twitch.tv/connoreatspants/clip/JazzySpotlessMelonMoreCowbell
What he said here is completely valid, a little poorly worded in the same way as Carsonâs statement, but overall something I stand behind.
Some people are claiming that Carson is being manipulative or âgaslightingâ fans and stans:
Carson is not against fans who create cool stuff for him and his friends. He is against the people who harass him, accuse his friends of horrible things, and try to look for every little thing theyâve said and done wrong. This is what he said, and people got mad at him for it, and so he blocked them. That is it. There is no gaslighting. There is no manipulation. Iâve seen much more manipulative things coming from the stansâ side of things.
Now we move on to Noahâs reply to Carsonâs tweet. Which, yes, caused a whole new can of worms to be opened.
Now, for those like me who have trouble figuring out Noahâs way of speaking, let me translate: âstans are insecure people who start to feel entitled because theyâve started to view a streamer they like as a friend/someone who shares their pain.âÂ
For those of you who donât know, this is what âdonât negotiate with terroristsâ means:
However, almost predictably, stans saw the word âterroristâ and lost their goddamn minds. That, coupled with the complicated phrasing of Noahâs words, caused a lot of stans to freak out.
This conversation is full of Bad Takes, but my main issue is that they are trying to diagnose Noah with an actual mental illness. That is not only offensive to people who have that illness (especially calling him âinsaneâ in the same sentence, as well as implying that having said illness makes you a bad person) but is also highly hypocritical since so many stans claimed to all be neurodivergent themselves.Â
Also, 90% of his fans arenât stans. Theyâre mostly fans or flans. You are a loud minority. You arenât as powerful as you think you are. Noah even started to retweet hate comments, thatâs how few shits he gave. He also shows that he is concerned about people making things up about him, which is understandable.
Plus he outright said that stans are not fans of him, which in most cases, theyâre not. Noahâs content isnât as widely watched as some of his friendsâ stuff, and a lot of stans donât watch his streams.
But anyway, hereâs one good take I saw floating around:
After this, before his stream, Carson deleted his original tweets and spent some time with his family, which was a sensible and mature thing to do at this point.Â
During Carsonâs stream, someone notified him that his âfansâ had started to doxx stans. Here is his reaction:
https://m.twitch.tv/callmecarsonlive/clip/SpicySassyGerbilArgieB8
A lot of people got mad that he didnât do more to stop the doxxings, but I want to raise the question: what was he supposed to do? He canât control his âfansâ (another breed of stans who donât call themselves stans were doing the doxxings, to be honest) and he said not to do it. He was streaming, he didnât know how serious it was or even if it was true, at that moment, what was he supposed to do?
It did get serious. People I know were doxxed. Anyone posting anything (positive or negative) about lunch club, smplive, and Carson were in danger. It was not fake like some people claimed. The twt handles in this post are blurred out because of the doxxing threats. I am making this post at my own risk, but I do feel that tumblr is safer than twitter at the moment.
This being said, it is in no way Carsonâs fault how out of hand this has become. He has been against doxxing in the past and his sentiments havenât changed. He has said more about the doxxings in replies to tweets such as this one:
Also, hereâs what the mods on Carsonâs discord server had to say about the situation. Theyâve clearly talked about this with Carson, and are strongly against anyone who is doxxing these people (especially since a lot of the people being doxxed are minors).
A similar sentiment was shared on Tedâs discord server:
Here is what ItsAsaii had to say:
So thatâs basically where everything stands right now. If you want an even fuller update on everything, check out Carsonâs stream âafternoon fellas and fellettesâ where he talks about everything.
Hereâs the last tweets I have from Carson regarding the whole situation:
And I agree fully with what he has said. And again, Carson doesnât owe stans anything. Just like what was said here, he had subs and fans before he had stans, they did not âmakeâ him, and they cannot control him.
This is all I have to say, for now. If I have missed anything or youâd like me to cover anything else, please let me know. If I have hugely missed the mark and said something super wrong/offensive, let me know. If youâd like me to talk about a streamer or youtuber not related to lunch club, throw me a DM or an ask and Iâll try to compile some things, even if I donât watch their content or know who they are.

Iâm sorry...
Hello there, I know I won't be accepted forgiveness right away as I have a feeling you don't trust me, but I just want to say I'm sorry. I'm sorry for being pushy, I'm sorry for complaining, I'm sorry if I hurt you, I'm just sorry for everything. All I am is a loser with low self esteem that complains from time to time that everyone thinks I'm a liar. And I can't blame you as I feel like I'm a nobody to anybody. All I want was trying to be best person, but everything just pushes me down that I don't know who I am anymore.
Ever since I joined the internet, I've been worrying that there's a few people that would try to push me down that I can't think properly and feel like I'm nothing. Sometimes I would just push it aside and take a glimpse and take account on it's about. But he most recent event that dragged me down that made me felt like I don't belonged was around late 2019 when a friend showed me a callout post that some random person on the internet about me. I don't even know about this user until my friend showed me the journal. Most of the stuff the user said about me I can understand and I can't deny it as they exploit I draw some things people don't like (SOME things). But I felt like the user wasn't telling the entire truth as they showed that my naughty stuff (mainly pinups) weren't filtered, which is unture as I actually put some of the art under a mature filter. Either the artist may've had the mature filter off or just want to lie. Either way, I made some posts about it and all the user did was trying to make it worse. Not only that, but I found out that there's a blog on tumblr that calls out certain Mr. Men fandom users for actions they don't like, mainly those that possibly hate for not being pure, and I was in it. I didn't thought about it for a while until a week or two ago after I saw some Mr. Men servers on tumblr that I wanted to join and see who was part of it. But after trying to join, I was unexpectedly kicked out for no reason. I understand that not everyone is not gonna accept me, but at the same time that it still feels unfair that I was given the treatment, as I only just joined and didn't done anything wrong on the server. And I know there's people in the server that don't like my stuff, but it's not like I was gonna break the rules as I was gonna be on my best behavior. Besides, it's not like I'm the only one that draws NSFW Mr. Men stuff as there's other artists hidden that do similar things like that. Regardless, I decided to just give up on that Mr. Men server as I feel like I'm never gonna be part of it and they only want pure members. In hindsight, I wish my one friend never told me about that post as all it did was making feel miserable and think that everyone is gonna turn against me, which it kinda did as that blog made those servers think I'm bad person. If I hadn't heard about it, I would've been happy and oblivious and not care about what is going on.
Which leads me to another user that is somewhat connected to it. As some of you know, I've been doing the anthro takes of the Mr. Men characters based on what a friend of mine did for years and wanted to do that style as it was very comfortable doing that format, plus she did some questionable things with those takes so they didn't care if anybody else uses that take. A month ago, there was an artist I found out on tumblr that did some very cute drawings that made me jealous that I kinda wish I have that style. This artist did their take of one of my favorite characters Miss Calamity as I like the design of their human take and wanted to do their of it. I know some of you are gonna say that I should've looked at their twitter before drawing that take of the character and asked the artist to use permission on drawing their take of the character. But the thing is that I only know the artist through tumblr and I was just looking at the art they posted and didn't know about their twitter until recently. And even then, they may've blocked my twitter accounts beforehand (and possibly my tumblr account as I get an error reblogging their pieces), so I can't have any contact with the artist. And the problem with the humanized Miss Calamity design is that unlike an OC where it's 100 percent owned by the artist, a humanized take of a character from a show or film is a bit iffy as that character is owned by the company and I doubt that. And I had no other way to contact the artist and don't know what their friends are that I can pass telephone, so rather than waiting for a long time, I decided to go ahead to experiment two pieces. Sometime after venting on getting banned from the Mr. Men server I just joined, I cooled off for a bit and after talking with one of her friends and heard that that she was upset. I told them to pass an apology message about the whole mess. They don't want to talk to me directly, but they at least they know what is going on and accepted my apology.
So any future humanized Mr. Men pictures made after the two Miss Calamity pieces I drew a month ago (both safe and the explicit one) are not gonna be in that format anymore, and would go back to the previous style as it's more safe compare to the real human designs. In hindsight, I wish I never heard of this artist in the first place as I felt like finding out their human takes of the Mr. Men characters only soured out relationship more and it's unlikely we'll talk, which is sad as I like their art and felt like we could've been decent friends if things weren't exploited about me out in the open.
So what am I gonna do now? The first thing I'm gonna do is to put most of my NSFW stuff I put as links on DeviantArt under a paywall. I'm sorry for those that like my NSFW stuff, but after seeing some corners of the fandom don't like how my stuff is getting exposed that some people don't want to talk to me, I'm putting most of my stuff as payware through my patreon. So anything that wasn't under payware will be part of the treatment (alts included). Pinups are still gonna be under mature filters. If you're cheap and don't want to pay for them, go find some of them on other sites. I'm still gonna draw NSFW, but for safety reasons the more explicit stuff be mostly payware. And some of the taboo stuff won't be posted here (which doesn't matter as I just stopped doing it years ago after two posts). The second thing is that I cut some people out of my life that are just making my life hard for the past few years, like one that was friendly at first but later started to mock me over the years rather than telling me what I'm drawing wrong, and another person on twitter that was encouraging me to draw more NSFW that only made some people to not like me anymore. Now like I said, I'm still gonna draw that stuff, but it'll be under strict filters and payware after what happened. Some people that don't like me for drawing that stuff won't accept me back, but at least that's a start.
As of for what's ahead for me, I'm not sure at the moment. I just feel like I'm not meant to have any friends at all, either because of who I am, my actions or something is not related to me. All I know is that I'm still gonna draw stuff that would often pop into my mind, though I'm gonna be more careful unlike what happened recently. But we're all human and we all make mistakes. I'm also just gonna ignore anything about me that brings me down as all I want is to try to make myself happy as all that blog did was making me feel upset and feel like nobody is gonna like me on trying to exploit a lot of things about me. I know criticism is meant to make you be stronger, but some of it felt like it was trying to make be someone else that people want me to be, and all it does was just making me feel unhappy. And let's be honest, my life sucks, I have no friends and the whole world is against me no matter what I do. All I want is to be happy and do whatever I feel is right. So again, I'm sorry if were you hurt by me or feel like you were turned off by me either because of my content or how I was behaving. It's nobody's fault.

Ian Mathersâ 2020: Weâre stuck inside our own machines
Iâve had a song I loved in high school and havenât thought much about since stuck in my head. The song âApparitionsâ by the Matthew Good Band is a fine example of the alt rock of the late 90s; if you grew up then but somewhere down in the states (or elsewhere) instead of my southern Ontario you may well have your regional equivalents, and like this one they may not resonate terribly strongly outside of their time and place. It popped back into my head after a long time recently and of course 2020 has changed it a little. A song that as a teen I felt keenly as about loneliness (albeit also about how technology can feed into that) of course now plays on my nerves as another small piece of art about the way that most of us (those scared and/or responsible anyway) have only that relatively narrow, technologically mediated connection to the people we love. All of us, artists and listeners alike, are trying to fit our feelings and art and selves down these little connections, with some success.
On a personal level, 2020 wound up being stressful in ways we couldnât have predicted even after the pandemic hit. In circumstances that could have seen governments on this continent support those unable to work (and those who shouldnât have to), support those workers who are truly essential, support workers and renters and even landlords and small businesses, instead we got a near-total abeyance of those governments using the resources we provide them with to save any of us. On a personal level my wife and I were lucky enough to be able to work from home (not that it didnât come with its own forms of stress, and now that Iâm off until January I have several work/stress-related illnesses to recover from) but still saw friends and loved ones lose good, used-to-be-sustainable livings overnight, saw family businesses succumb to a near-total absence of effective government support after months of trying to keep above water, etc.
It is probably no surprise that this is not a situation conducive to listening to music, let alone writing about it; I have deliberately and happily kept busy on behind the scenes stuff at Dusted that I could still manage but looking, at the end of the year, at the amount I managed to actually create is demoralizing if not at all shocking. Iâm not sure I think next year will be âbetterâ in many important ways, although at our job there is a growing feeling among coworkers that next year has to have some work/life balance because 2020 was, maybe more than anything else, unsustainable.
Thatâs not to say I didnât spend a lot of time and emotion on music this year, and if nothing else constant sleep deprivation, stress, and panic meant I was probably open to being deeply moved by all sorts of art even more than normally (itâs gotten to the point where I canât even read a sad or moving twitter thread out loud to my wife without getting teary, which is kind of⌠nice?). Funnily enough the band that did the most to keep me sane didnât really put out anything in 2020. Personal favorite, Low, instead started, in early April, getting on Instagram with something they called on whim âItâs Friday Iâm in Low.â With one brief break they have now done by my count at least 35 shows (catalogued here, by the way), every Friday at about 4 my time.
Admittedly itâs easier for Low to pull this off than some bands, since the 2/3 of the trio that sing are a married couple (theyâve had a couple of socially-distanced backyard shows with bassist Steve Garrington, but heâs mostly been isolating elsewhere). These shows have seen the bandâs Alan Sparhawk take a mid-set break to do follow-up phone interviews with the acts featured in the COVID-curtailed touring bands series Vansplainingthat they started on YouTube, or just to give a tour round their vegetable garden and talk tips. Itâs seen Alan and Mimi Parker draw on their impressive, 25+ year body of work (averaging 4-5 songs a set, I donât think theyâve repeated themselves yet) and talk a bit between songs about pandemics, politics, song choices, and whether Alan should grab his bike helmet this time.
Theyâre not the only musicians out there speaking love and sanity (and playing music) into the strange digital interzone filled with hate and disinformation where weâve all been forced to gather while locked down, but they were and the most consistent and steady signal being emitted each week. No matter how tired I was from work or what new symptoms Iâd developed or what horrific thing I read into the news, even if I had to take an emergency nap while it was actually airing, every Friday the show was there. Once things do return to something more like normal, itâs one of the few things Iâll unambiguously miss about this weird-ass year.
So if that makes an argument for Low as my band of the year (admittedly again⌠itâs not like Double Negative has aged poorly, either), that does a disservice to those 2020 records I did connect with; even if there are still literally dozens I have to go through, many of which I expect to love, my top picks this year (if as unrankable by me as always) hit me as hard as any top pick in recent years did. So here I present a quick and informal top 5, which the rest of my top 20 following in alphabetical order. Hereâs hoping for more time and space in 2021 for music, and even more than that, for more support for those who need it from those who could have been providing it all this time. (The Matthew Good Band, incidentally, always did best with their ballads. âStrange Daysâ is another Iâve had in my head these days; the image of moving âbackwards, into a wall of fireâ has stuck with me since the 90s and itâs never felt more grimly appropriate.)
Greet Death â New Hell
New Hell by Greet Death
This one is, in some sense, cheating; it came out November 2019. But that just means itâs the latest winner of my personal Torres Prize for Ian Being Late to the Party (so named because becoming slightly obsessed with Torresâ Sprinter just after I sent in my 2015 list was the first time I noticed that one of my favorite records of each year tends to get picked up by me just after I call it quits on the year, no matter how long I try to wait). This very doom and gloom slowcore/metal/(whatever, just know itâs heavy) trio at first felt very much like my beloved Cloakroom (whose Time Well has also won a Torres Prize) but sure enough nuances revealed themselves. Back in February it felt almost a little too negative, but then the rest of 2020 happened. And the extended burns of âYouâre Gonna Hate What Youâve Doneâ and the title track remain searing.
Holy Fuck â Deleter
Probably the record Iâve been trying to write about the longest in 2020, and the one Iâm most disappointed in myself that I just couldnât get the requisite paragraphs together. Itâs a wonderful effort from the consistently great Toronto resolutely human-created (and âmediated) dance music quartet, one that both feels like a summation of everything they do well, and with the addition of some outside voices (including strong turns from the singers of both Hot Chip and Liars) a step forward at the same time.
Spanish Love Songs â Brave Faces Everyone
Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs
As the year got worse, this roar of defiance only got more crucial for me to hear every so often; I was a big enough fan of it, even after writing it up for Dusted, that when they solicited fan footage for a subsequent music video you may just be able to get a glimpse of me in it. (Iâm the one in a âNo Toriesâ t-shirt.) My punk rock-loving twin brother was the one who introduced me to Spanish Love Songs and we were supposed to spend an evening in June screaming along to them live in a packed, sweaty room. I need that in my life again.
Julianna Barwick â Healing Is a Miracle
Healing Is A Miracle by Julianna Barwick
Itâs a sign of what 2020 has been like here that even just this album title leaves bruises, and while I privately worried Barwick would have a hard time following up 2016âs sublime Will (probably my favorite record that year), it seems that continuing to take whatever downtime she needs to keep focusing and refining her particular muse has once again yielded amazing results. Anyone who thinks they know what a Barwick track sounds like should really check out, say, âFlowersâ, but much of this record absolutely sounds like Barwick, just even better than before. She also boasted my wife and I's favorite streaming concert of 2020, an absolutely gorgeous rendition of this album with Mary Lattimore showing up.
Phoebe Bridgers â Punisher
Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers
I joked on Twitter recently that I have far too nice a dad (and far too good a relationship with him) to be as obsessed as I am with Phoebe Bridgersâ âKyotoâ, but here we are. Like most of her generation, Bridgersâ social media presence ranges from shit-posting to inscrutable, but even though things are often just as hard to figure out in her beautiful songs (as they often are in life), thereâs an emotional clarity to them that can just grab you deep down. Couple that with seriously impressive songcraft and the progress from her already astounding debut Stranger in the Alps and more than anyone else in 2020 Iâm excited to see just where the hell Phoebe Bridgers is going to go, because it feels like sheâs talented and hardworking enough to go just about anywhere and drag a lot of our hearts with her.

A reader writes:
Iâm writing to you today because I have some information to share with you (and your readers) who may still be skeptical that this LGBTQIA+ gender-identity craze is coming for their kids. Â Some recent interactions online have made me more aware than ever that the movement is spreading in wild and unpredictable ways, and also made me reflect on how, in my own life, even someone like me could have fallen victim to it.
I want to start off by saying that recently, (and ironically, in an attempt to try not to be sucked into the internet as purely a source for doom and gloom: you will see how this backfires on me) I decided to rejoin a fan community surrounding one of my favorite franchises on Twitter. I wonât go into too much detail about which community and the exact specifics, but just know that itâs a popular franchise thatâs appropriate for older kids, teens and adults (nothing 18+, nothing for really little ones). Â As a teen myself I was fairly active in a similar branch of this community on another social media platform (Facebook), and enjoyed it immensely before the platform eventually went more or less defunct as a hot-spot for fan content. Most of the content was fan-created work (like fan-art or fan-fiction) with a little interaction and lots of âDID YOU SEE THE LATESTâ kinds of posts.
âŚ
Anyway, to keep it to a minimum, that was then. If youâve been on the internet any time in the last five years you know that spaces where people just talk about an interest and donât mix it with politics and activism are becoming few and far between. Even though I knew this, and knew that I wasnât going to have the same experience in a different place, something sparked an interest in me to go try to reconnect with my internet roots in a different setting. Â So, I followed some hashtags, quickly found some new followers and settled back to enjoy at least marginally some discussions online that didnât have to do with Covid and All The Ways We Are All Going To Die.
Then came the teenagers.
Much like when I was a kid, this franchise attracts a lot of younger people. Â So it was hardly surprising to me to find that many of my new followers were in the 14-18 age range and that people like myself (mid-older 20s) were a sort of senior majority. That was fine- Twitterâs rules after all are 13+, so itâs not unreasonable to assume if youâre part of a popular group that youâll interact on occasion with minors. That wasnât the part I found strange. The part I found strange was that all of them, and I repeat, all of them were fans of two things- the franchise, and gender identities.
You can actually almost pinpoint the age range of the 18 and under crowd by how many of them have the following: 1. Pronouns in bio and in username. Â 2. Gender identity or lack thereof displayed in bio or username. 3. LGBTQ+ sexual orientation displayed in bio or username. etc. etc. etc. Iâm not going to dive into it too much, because some might be saying âisnât that just normal nowadays? Even politicians do that?â Well, youâre not wrong if thatâs what youâre thinking. And thatâs not the part that disturbs me.
What disturbed me was that, a few weeks after I joined the group, I started noticing an unsettling pattern among many of these teenage users (and many over-teen users, but Iâm trying to make a point about the young ones specifically). For a few days, after an interesting bit of news or a trailer or some other thing that unites franchises, the posts in my feed would be primarily things like what I remembered from past experiences: posts about the franchises, theories, speculations, fanart, etc. Â But, every time things would settle back down into a quiet, normal week, the feeds in my post became almost entirely about one thing: Gender and LGBTQ talking points. Â Iâm going to diverge for one second and say that many people in this group arenât using a personal, front-facing account for their interactions in this fan-group. Theyâre mostly using alt-accounts with no real names and faces attached (myself included). Â And yet, every time the discussion in the feeds died down to where there was just no new stuff about the franchise to talk about, all the conversation slowly but surely shifted back to sexual orientation and gender. Â From fan-ships of perfect LGB couples to âhey I drew this person but as a trans-female!â to even forgoing pretending to talk about their interests and just discussing their own gender and sex presentation with their other online friends, it became quickly very clear to me that A. I no longer really belonged here and B. Every single one of these kids was obsessed. Every. Single. One.
âŚ
Iâm going to digress and talk about myself for a minute to explain just why these examples, particularly that last one, burn a hole in my soul. Â From the minute I was old enough to remember, Iâve never been one of those typically presenting females. When my sisters and I played dress-up as kids, they played princesses and I played a prince or a witch or whatever was more interesting. In addition to the dolls and barbies I had being one of three girls, I also had an assortment of boy-oriented toys, including action figures, a remote control car and this really cool nerf bow-and-arrow set that I still secretly wish had survived my playing with it because man, my kids are gonna miss out someday. My hair was short because I hated wearing it up and the solution was a bob, and when we spent time with relatives I could be found as far away from my female cousins as possible, hanging out with my male cousins and talking about Legos and Lord of The Rings. I spent 90% of my time reading books and ignoring reality, and didnât put much effort into my appearance until probably age 13 or later.
And I wished I was a boy.
It wasnât an all-consuming thought, but I thought it. I wished, many times, when my parents would fuss at me to please stop attempting to climb trees in your Sunday clothes and when my sisters never talked about anything but dolls and tea-parties around their friends that I could be one of the boys. I had always liked the boys and their world better, and I fit into better, and yet there was that little problem (that I was still a girl) that kept me from being accepted into the boy group. Â The reality was, I was already probably very intelligent for my age (too-well read children can relate) and I took that big-headedness a little too far at times. I was also a very emotional person (still am) and just passionately felt that being a girl and being expected to do girl things was hideous and unfair.
The saving grace? My mom was the same. Sheâs never been a typical female either, and though as adults we have some clear differences (ironically, I have more stereotypical female interests/talents than her- like a hidden passion for interior decorating and a love of baking and so on) she was there for me, to be able to tell me that no- I didnât really want to be a boy, I was just a girl who liked sword fights and grass-stains more than ballgowns and tea parties, and that was okay!!! She was proof that there were other girls like me, and that I would find more of them eventually (I did) and, even though we never said so in so many words, that stereotypes and how we fit into them has nothing to do with our innate female and male selves. And so, reassured that I could be female and still be however I wanted, I eventually grew out of those thoughts, and as I matured, found that there were âfemale thingsâ I connected with that my past self was too young to appreciate.
But, think about all this in a modern context. Iâm a happy adult female now, and I was never truly gender-questioning. I just thought, for a while, that boys had more fun than I did, so I wanted to be one. Â But that, in it of itself, is a thought thatâs deep enough for modern gender activists to insist I be transitioned immediately and put on life-altering hormones, never given a chance to grow up or grow out of questioning, and affirmed in my presentation instantly! If I, like that young girl online, had been handed a âgender-affirmingâ flag and an identity that âmade senseâ out of why I was different from my peers, I might have jumped on it, especially without the presence of a wise older person to tell me I wasnât anything different than what sheâd been as a child. This is the problem, this is why this kind of thing is so dangerous and toxic and wrong.

HS^2 blogginâ mainline 2020-09-15
This caught me laaaate at night gosh Iâm tired but Iâm gonna get it outta the way so it wonât stick in my craw! Already saw the first page, so itâs time for:
> CHAPTER 13. The Funeral
Church with chess symbols at the peaks and a Prospit/Derse or Hope/Rage split color theme on the stained glass windows.
JANE: Dearly beloved...
> (==>)
Trolls, humans, and papparazzi. Oh, hm, this church is RATHER carapacian isnât it? Between the chess and the continuing Prospit-Derse themes, like how this corresponds to how they align in the incipisphere top-left to bottom-right if I recall:
(Minus the outlying orbs to the left and right for symmetry.)
That twisted pattern is interesting, and not quite a spirograph. Is that gonna be important later? If weâre going to get some sort of class chart later in the comic, itâd be easy for them to hint at the chartâs graphical structure subtly by dropping it places like here.
JANE: Ladies...
JANE: Gentlemen...
JANE: News outlets...
JANE: And other valued members of the Human Nation State.
Technically true, but still odd to hear--Â ...oh right, I forgot this was asshole dictator-wannabe Jane, too.
I read an interesting twitter thread recently about the intense psychological distinction between wanting to BE the best, and wanting to be TREATED like youâre the best. Epilogues/HS^2 Jane is kind of written as a case study on the pitfalls of leaning on the latter instead of the former.
> (==>)
They brought Yiffy WITH them-!? --Oh right. The hostage exchange was supposed to happen here wasnât it.
Yiffy definitely looks like a Harley-Lalonde daughter in this shot.
JANE: Gamzee Makara, High Court Jester, exalted saint of the purple veil, has left us to traverse that grand, gay carnival in the sky, where, I am told by various members of the clownly cloth, he will spend the rest of history, honking in grand tribute to the Mirthful Messiah.
SINGULAR???
Weird. Is it because Alt!Callie âwonâ here?
Or is Jane just forgetting because sheâs culturally used to monotheism (ironically) and is insensitive.
JANE: And my first memory of our Purple Prince, was his robust codpiece--
Wow.
> (==>)
JANE: --As he offered me his friendly support, along with the sacred blood of his brethren, the holy sacrament--
He STILL killed trolls??! (EDIT: No, a friend points out that she's talking about when she met him first in Act 6 and he tried selling bottles of troll blood to her. EDIT2: -which may be another inconsistency, since Vriska supposedly overwrote that post-retcon.)
> (==>)
It takes Jake a few seconds of puzzled eye contact before he catches exactly what it is Yiffany is tossing down. In his defense, he is distracted by his wifeâs speech, which is doing the emotional equivalent of wringing him out like a wet towel, before using that towel to slap the sweaty buttocks of a large, odorous man. Even if he knows everything sheâs saying is a load of horsefeathers, it does nothing for his composure to hear her heap praise on that smelly, homewrecking clown.
Bad things about Gamzee deserve to be said here, yes.
Jake wonders what sheâll say about him, at his own funeral.
Now those are some uncomfortable thoughts.
He narrows his eyes in Yiffanyâs direction. Sheâs a lovely girl, really. He wishes he could have gotten to know her under better circumstances. Heâd known she existed, of course--Jane had complained about her often enough--but theyâd never had much chance to get acquainted. He rather believes her and Tavvy would have been fast friends.
Then again, perhaps itâs better that she never had much of a chance to get to know his family.
He lets go of the leash.
Yep, thereâs a plan to set in motion that heâs probably already discussed with her privately. Gotta unite this four-kid team after all.
> (==>)
Wait, are you ATTACKING?!? --Of course youâre attacking. You would even if the plan was something different, wouldnât you.
JANE: And I know that at times like these it is easy to want to give in.
JANE: To throw in the towel, and turn our faces away from the light of democracy and moral fortitude that we, the citizens of the human kingdom, are blessed with from birth.
JANE: God knows Iâve had my own faith tested in the last few weeks.
Jesus Christ, what has she turned the place into, a fucking theocracy?
She sounds like the leader of some screwed-up, fundamentalist country! Like the United States!
*rimshot*
JANE: As many of you know, I did not grow up with the same privileges that all of you enjoy.
Jesus.
JANE: I was born on proto-Earth, that half-finished dystopia mangled by the ravages of foolish leadership and endless war.
Jesus, she really IS a self-evident takedown of hypocritical entitled political figures. With the bonuses having Jasprose explicitly ADDRESS said entitlement to make things even clearer cut.
JANE: And as for Gamzee, well, his upbringing was even worse.
JANE: He was born to a violent and uncaring home, a lonely child with few natural gifts.
...Some natural gifts and status.
> (==>)
Sheâs just, shaking with fury here isnât she? And about to perform an impressive corpse-lob.
JANE: It would be simple to let this disgusting, vile, SHAMEFUL act of spiteful revenge turn us away from the blinding light of the sword of justice that hangs over us all--
This sentence seems suspicious so Iâm quoting it to refer to later if I need to, but is probably just platitudes.
> (==>)
JANE: Poised
> (==>)
JANE: Trembling
Okay maybe the swordâs a dick, but what exactly is Yiffany doing?? Iâm finding it difficult as usual to tell between some of these image transitions.
> (==>)
JANE: Ready to burst forth--
Bad PR to shock-collar a kid mid press junket. (Very dicks description.)
> (==>)
Click. (Did they swap the shock function with Janeâs necklace somehow, thatâd be fun.)
JANE: I want to give up, at times. I understand your pain.
While shocking a kid? GREAT PR.
> (==>)
JANE: I sympathize with your pain.
Wow, those horrified audience members. She REALLY canât even see herself anymore can she? Not even hear herself. And theyâre making sure this is pointed out to EVERYONE watching. They described this as in large part a PR campaign to defeat her, didnât they?
> (==>)
Great furious businesswoman-villain look, that art.
JANE: But when that pain! Becomes too hard! To endure!
JANE: Remember poor, lifeless Gamzee! Who suffered pain far worse than any of us could ever fathom!
JANE: THE PAIN OF BETRAYAL!
Click click click. This is a fun sequence.
> (==>)
DIRK: Dude, didnât you lower the voltage on that shock collar?
DIRK: Little Red isnât looking so hot.
JAKE: Yes of course i did but the damn doohickys got the kick of a donkey!
JAKE: I couldnt remove it completely shed know i was the one who did it!
DIRK: Well, if that supervillain cuntwaffle doesnât stop, sheâs going to kill her. Not really the best at hostage management, is she.
Decent plan. (And of course Dirk would pull out the word cunt.) Whenâs the cavalry coming?
> (==>)
JANE: But we cannot allow his memory to be in vain!
JANE: For Gamzee Makara taught us that even the most loathsome degenerate can take their place in society.
JANE: All they need is the right redemption arc - !
Trying to hammer home some of the Epilogueâs trolly-critical themes a little less bleakly, I take it.
I kind of like the violent vibration in ALL of these gifs in a row. It makes the scene seem small, slow, teeth-clenching but still full of steady action, emphasizing the importance of the relatively small events from panel to panel while giving them the sense with the animation of them being [i]drawn out[/i] and tortuous instead of just âoccurringâ. It feels that way to me, anyway.
> (==>)
If he got up alive here, thatâd be hilarious. (Presumably heâs been treated and done-up like a normal funeral body, not âdormantâ and undecaying like a dead god-tier.)
> (==>)
CORPSE PUNT w/ CLEATS
> (==>)
That face is just. I love that face.
> (==>)
SHE MAD
JANE: Young lady, I am just about at the end of my rope with you.
JANE: Throw all the dog bowls you want at the walls of my warship.
JANE: But donât you dare act up in front of a
JANE: Live
JANE: Fucking
JANE: Newsfeed!
YIFFY: Grrrrrr
What did you expect to happen? Do you expect to shout her down from this, Jane?
JANE: After everything Iâve done for you--paying for your education, helping your parents cover up your existence from the world!
JANE: Just imagine what Rose and Jade would say if they could see you now, even dissidents can have a little decorum!
JANE: Get down from there at once!
YIFFY: Grrrrrr
But this is GAMZEE. --I guess itâs seriously disrespectful to his followers, though. Still. If you wanted civility from her, a shock collar, leash, and food bowl wasnât the way to go about it.
JANE: Donât you threaten me, young lady. Not today!
YIFFY: GRRRRRRRRR
What is your PLAN even, Jane? Youâve completely disregarded her.
JANE: Thereâs nowhere for you to go. My agents are swarming this church. Be reasonable, Yiffany.
JANE: Ugh.
JANE: Disgusting name.
JANE: But thatâs hardly your fault. You were always just a footnote. Your parentsâ little prank.
JANE: Honestly, thatâs why I helped them all those years ago! I do love a good jape.
JANE: But letâs be serious.
JANE: You donât matter. If you did, they would have come for you already.
Can all the press hear her being such an asshole?
Okay, stereotypically, their arrival should be the next couple panels:
> (==>)
Jake, do something useful like hoping harder.
> (==>)
And she knocks the remote away. Excellent.
And she does. Seemingly at the end of her tolerance for insults toward her name, social status, and heritage, Yiffy performs an impressive backflip off the podium and down onto the church floor. One that, if it hadnât been happening amidst a sea of other newsworthy events, would surely have ended up on someoneâs instagram story within thirty seconds. She gives Gamzeeâs corpse one last parting kick: a hard, proper kick that proves those cleats arenât just for fashion. Although they are certainly also for fashion.
Good, good.
He vanishes into the seething crowd, and we are confident that we will never have to deal with this asshole ever again.
God damnit.
> (==>)
Jake watches this from a safe distance, poised on the edge of intervening to pull Yiffy out of there. But in the end he doesnât have to. Instead he watches in admiration as she tears the place to utter shreds. An echoing sympathy swells inside of him as she rends apart the funeral flowers and punts Gamzee into the shrieking congregation. Here is a girl who felt the cold, indecent hand of fate wrapping around her, and instead of submitting to it and slowly sublimating down into morasse of boiled doormat, she slapped it away from her with a lively oh, no thank you.
All at once, Jake feels immense affection for his granddaughter. He hopes the two of them can make up for lost time.
Lessons belatedly learned, but learned nonetheless.
> (==>)
JANE: Enough of this.
JANE: Seize her!
Kind of Red Queen of you. (Are those stained glass windows in back of the frame about to burst?)
> (==>)
Yep.
The stained glass window shatters inward, obliterated to stardust. The war is knocking.
Even attacking a disgusting faithâs church is pretty bad form, though.
Tired and busy, seeya next upd8. <3

Hey, Rad... Alex... Alexlememe? I know that's the name you used to go by and I know you've kinda disconnected yourself from Viv's fanbase after ZP ended, and I remember your memes and such but I kinda just wanted to get your take on the Hazbin drama since you reblogged the headcanon blog's post on the subject. More or less regarding the issue of her being uncharitable to fans and non-fans alike, plus that one callout post on twitter?
So this is weird. I wasnât expecting to get asks on the subject since like you said, Iâve generally been disconnected from the fanbase aside from the few reblogs here and there retaining to Hazbin and its more recent developments. But yeah I guess I could give my take on this since I mean.. old fans still follow me. Idk why, but they do!So, really. In regards to that callout post (which is now deleted) I really, really donât care that much. For one thing, Initially I did because I really hated to see someone be slandered so viciously with inaccurate and uncharitable attacks, but I kinda just stopped because even when I linked the addresses from both Viv, and the Ken dude regarding all the drama mentioned, it was either ignored and resulting in me being called a âpedo sympathizerâ or âIt wasnât even an apologyyyyy wehâ and like, whatever. I stopped giving a shit.
Terms of the traced animation thing... Lol, ok. I mean homages do exist, and her animation thingy was based on a meme so whatevs.
Anyways,I knew from the very start that the whole âtracingâ and âstealing designsâ stuff was nonsense since there was an entire like, tumblr drama arc on the issue, and albeit Vivâs post is gone, thereâs evidence of legal contracts regarding Jiji and that whole nonsense that was years ago. In regards to her drawing pictures of Blaire White and Shoe⌠Eh. I mean, yeah, fuck em, but sheâs made it clear that she doesnât support those views anymore, and she wasnât even really aware of the other things theyâd done at that point, and I see no real reason not to believe her because what does lying about that gain her? Yeah her comment on the âblackfaceâ thing if you wanna call it that was dumb as shit, but considering 2016 was a rough year for her in terms of trying to find where she fell in the political sphere, I can relate because I was in the same boat. A lot of sjw cringe comps, shaming feminists, and purposely misgendering transpeople⌠Not a good time for me either! Course Iâve changed. I went from being a reactionary alt-centrist to an anarchist so. Whether thatâs an improvement is up to you.
As for the whole pedo/zoo shit, I really donât see it. I mean like, look, obviously porn art portraying people fucking feral animals is disgusting right. Not saying it isnât problematic or anything, but to be fair, she did draw this shit like 8 years ago. Iâve seen worse from even more well-established artists and I donât see people trying to cancel them? Also, the art was suggestive for one thing and not necessarily 100% porn. I mean itâs still creepy and gross, and Iâd understand scolding them if they continued to do so but a lot worse, but I havenât seen anything like that from Viv past those 2 drawings. As for the pedo shit⌠The relationship between a 17 year old and a 19 year old is⌠hardly creepy and reminiscent of pedo shit. So yeah no fuck that. Now with the drawing of Mirage and Kestrel and the tag that said something jokingly like âMirage and her pedo tendenciesâ or whatever⌠Yeah idk, I canât defend that lmfao. Again, Viv said she disapproves of those drawings and doesnât care to think about them, but that one piece of artwork definitely had some baggage to it that made me feel uncomfortable after reading the tags.Only issue I took in terms of her addressing that, is that she was very adamant about it being an inside joke⌠Which if thatâs true, you mustâve had some fucked up friends like damn.
I would also like to state that cub art is legitimately disgusting and I am of the belief that it can cause harm depending on the context since I assume the consumption of cub art can reinforce the urge for pedophiles to act on their desires instead of finding healthy coping mechanisms for it through therapy. There have been stories from younger users on the internet that older people have tried to groom them and have the notion of pedos preying on them be normalized by sending them art depicting kids in sexual acts with adults. Of course in isolation cub art isnât as harmful as the actual act of raping a child, and I would argue that people have their priorities kind of messed up since the illustration being acknowledged should be part of combating pedophiles preying on children. However, people, typically twitter wokescolds tend to focus on the art solely and I donât know why. Thereâs a lot of MAPS trying to find their way into LGBT spaces and itâs fucking gross.
Now with Hazbin itself⌠Itâs meh. Initially I watched it with rose-tinted glasses and loved it. After watching it for like⌠the 3rd, 4th, 5th time? Itâs alright. I donât hate it, but itâs far from perfect. Now ofc I know itâs a pilot but a very lengthy pilot Iâll say. My biggest gripe with the pilot is that the editing is really fucking weird. Like the editing where Angel tells Alastor âI can suck yah dick!â and the scene that followed was really off. It seemed like too many cuts were made in that instance and seemed very cluttered. It also feels that way during Charlie singing âInside Every Demon is a Rainbowâ and how many little animated bits were like almost wiped off the screen by how fast it came by, and ntm there was just so much happening all at once on screen as well. I had to pause at points just to process everything that was happening. The palette is also very, very, verrrry red. Thereâs so much red going on and like⌠I get it, itâs in hell. But lemme rest my eyes on something else besides red, please. The palette they use needs to be better diversified, and the same goes for the characters too. Every character seems to have red on them. Whenever Baxter shows up later heâs gonna look really out of place. Some of the jokes were ok, and others seemed non-clever. I didnât think Angelâs joke about sucking Alâs dick was funny. I did like the joke with Pentious and Angel though. âSON??â Some of it couldâve been written better too.
Regarding the drama with the show itself⌠Personally I donât get it. Like, I donât feel as if Angel is homophobic as a character since his queerness isnât at the face of the jokes he makes? He just happens to be sex worker which⌠sex workers are fine? Support sex workers yâall, seriously. Thereâs also nothing intrinsically wrong with being sexually active either? As long as itâs within reason and youâre being trustworthy. The issue lies in the fact that people viewed the things I just mentioned as negative, and associate it with gay people as said negatively portrayed thing to push the sentiment of âGay man do sex a lot therefore the gays badâ or that sort of thing. Also thereâs a bit where it shows thereâs more emotional depth to him and Iâm hoping theyâll expand on that later. Honestly though, the criticisms in regards to that have been pretty uncharitable. Same with the criticisms for Vaggie. Apparently Vaggie is racist because⌠sheâs loud and angry? Again, this is a case where people assume those traits are negative, and because itâs assumed to be negative, the negatively portrayed thing pushes the sentiment of âBeing a loud fiery woman made, and latina women are that, therefore latina women badâ or some shit. There are stereotypes that are bad no matter what the context is like sambo-esque caricatures of black people. Then there are tropes that are applied to certain demographics that have the capability to be written well into characters without it being offensive or disrespectful. Vaggie is literally angry because sheâs protective of her gf. Like. Câmon.
So, I think that settles what I think about that? It honestly seems like superficial shit to me tbh, and Iâm saying this as an sjw-y beta cuck anarchist.
The only REAL gripe I have, is with what the mod from @zpheadcanons posted. Because I know this is probably true as much as it hurts me to say it. Faust def has a history of being pretty petty and bully-like to people she deems undesirable, and Viv harbors it by not criticizing it, and if anyone else within their friend group does it then youâre scolded vehemently and treated like garbage. Her attitude also stretches to harboring an audience full of white knights that I personally donât approve of.
Thereâs also this
Faust has hurt distant people I personally know and⌠yeah. Maybe Iâm biased but I canât vibe with that. Sorry. If you donât make an effort to criticize abusive behavior within your own friend circles then that makes you just as bad, because then youâre just a bystander to things you could have prevented.
This isnât to say Viv herself hasnât dealt with bad faith actors, or people who had the intention to hurt her, or very uncharitable criticism. Particularly from the badwebcomics forums which is honestly 4chan like in how they operate. Itâs vicious as hell, and a lot of their criticisms boil down to insults and personal attacks, which serve to be nonconstructive. Thatâs not to say Viv has been kind to even the more charitable criticism though. I know because when I happened to send an ask to the zoophobia criticism blog (where did it go???) regarding something relatively minor and superficial, she blocked me from her blog. Iâm still blocked lmfao. Iâm not blocked on twitter though! (not yet anyways). Faust has me blocked there though, and I have no idea why. Sheâs had me blocked for years even though I havenât spoken out against her till recently. So, thereâs that.
As for her apology itself, I feel like it was fine. I think it couldâve been worded better? The take I disagree with in terms of that is like⌠If I made a mistake in the past, and I make it clear that I donât care for what I did, I donât feel as if me explaining why I felt compelled to do certain things negate me from still not caring for my past actions? Thatâs just me providing context. Thatâs a really weird take, but I guess that could be viewed as an excuse idk. Personally I think people are holding the bar super high to a state of irrationality.
*sigh* So yeah thereâs that. I miss the old days where honestly I could be ignorant about this, but at the same time I look at my old obsessive posts and I kinda just⌠cringe. I was such an irrational stan I almost hate myself for it. Fuck XD
Edit: Iâd also like to point out that Iâm not saying Viv or Faust are totally awful or totally good people, and I know theyâre capable of being better. Itâs a matter of whether or not they wanna be better.

AOCâs Social Media Mastery
Politics and social media. Perhaps one of the dullest marriages to arise from the necessity of appealing to young (and now, older too) voters, many politicians donât seem to know how to use this invaluable tool to effectively communicate their ideas, their values, their campaign â essentially, their brand â to audiences outside of the traditional media of television and newspapers. Whether that be due to boring, long-winded tweets or coming off as more of a meme (Fake news CNN is VERY BAD!), middle- to upper-aged politicos canât seem to find their way around an Instagram account.
But for one New York U.S. Representative, Reddit AMAs and Instagram Live stories are a smart weapon for standing out. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC, took political center stage after winning the Democratic nomination for the 14th District Representative of New York in 2018, defeating 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley by nearly 15 percentage points. Though her fame didnât achieve worldwide standing until after her upset (she gained more than 2.6 million followers in the 8 months following her win), a campaign video posted on YouTube gained half a million views and since then, she has secured her place in the social media limelight with direct, simple tweets that communicate her authenticity to not just her constituents, but to about 10.5 million followers on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
As her least-followed channel, Ocasio-Cortez still has more than 1 million followers and averages almost 10,000 reactions per post on Facebook. As someone who isnât currently in the running for office, this is a pretty impressive number, seeing as my own District Representative (whoâs been in Congress for the past 10 years) has a paltry 9,000 followers and I had to look up who it was. There, a range of videos featuring her Congressional involvement (usually edited by the NowThis company), links to news articles with relevant commentary, and criticisms of current policies. All of her posts either have a photo or video, a rule of thumb for getting attention on Facebook. Her mix of content, all political and no personal for Facebook, has garnered a high engagement rate. With the younger demographic shifting more to Instagram, her Facebook content does well to keep things all-business but still maintain her trademark sincerity.
Twitter, where her most-followed channel with 5.6 million follows, is from which her most famous content has sprung. AOC runs her own Twitter account, which is clear from her consistent use of no-nonsense, no jargon language, natural use of emojis, and fact-checking responses that made her iconic. About 4 out of every 5 tweets is a reply or retweet, but all of them are interesting and relevant articles with equally succinct messaging that enforce her progressive beliefs. When something canât be said in just a few words, she breaks her message apart into digestible chunks, a common method on Twitter. Hashtags and emojis are used, but sparingly, as any millennial would be wont to do. Responses to her tweets are usually in the majority GIFs of mic drops and explosions, with the expected internet troll sprinkled throughout. Her Twitter success is owed to her authentic take on Congressional life (and all its flaws), her to-the-point fact-checking when the GOP âcalls her outâ on getting a haircut, and testimonials from the people she represents. By and large, retweeting and getting retweeted are one of her biggest resources because it spreads her name to other parts of the Twittersphere where people interested in politics already are.
Her Instagram, which comes in at a little over 4 million followers, is where AOC gets the most personal. And perhaps this is her biggest strength. Most politicians use all social media platforms more or less the same â as a tool to replace political television advertising. Most of them simply post clips of their own rallies, articles written about them, or publicity shoots of them posing with a ladle at a food bank. But for Ocasio-Cortez, Instagram is where she lets her hair down, if only for a little bit. She doesnât simply repost content from her other channels her, but actual moments from her real life, like working in her community garden, on the job at district staff meetings and town halls, and a shot of ramen noodles and other groceries in her shopping basket. These shots arenât staged moments that endeavor to âconnectâ with the people, but rather touching commentary that is relatable because it is. She comes off smart and in-touch because she is. And occasionally, she even posts fan art. Her captions can range from a single sentence to 5 paragraphs long, but each is written with intention in each word, sparing hashtags for the rare, cheeky fun photo.Â
As far as a more formal analysis of AOCâs social media usage, the Evansâ Social Feedback Cycle can be applied to how she responds to criticism. Simply put, she doesnât. While yes, her aim is to garner the support of citizens not just in her own district, but also people who support her ideas of more accessible education, higher wages, a Green New Deal, prison abolition, etc., so she must know how to appeal to them and how to deal with those who donât view her in such a rosy light. Many members both famous and layman of the alt-right media have attacked her relentlessly, but she often doesnât take the time to indulge them, saying âI donât owe a response to unsolicited requests from men with bad intentions.â Her responses, or usually lack thereof, helps her followers solidify and opinion about her professionalism. As far as direct communication and feedback from her followers, AOC has hosted a Q&A on Instagram, a Reddit AMA, and asked on Twitter what kinds of questions people would ask Mark Zuckerberg in a Congressional hearing. She even opened her direct messages for the Twitter question, letting users talk with her as if they were just messaging one of their friends. Though these specific events donât happen often, it wouldnât be surprising if AOC started using these tools as a way to hear from the people what they want.
Because analyzing a politician is different than analyzing a brand aiming to sell something, applying the engagement process model and pinning AOC at âConsumptionâ is an accurate, but not entirely holistic assessment. While almost no politician goes beyond âConsumptionâ (unless you count inviting people to tag #FeeltheBern on selfies), itâs the kind of Consumption that matters. All of the content she is creating is incredibly engaging (compared to others in her field) and itâs a response to issues that people she has met have told her about. In this sense, she collaborates directly a lot more than other social-media-wielding politicians, making it more of a conversation than a lecture.

More than Meets the Eye, beginnerâs guide / resources
This guide is long. Use the headings to find the information you need & if youâve got resources this post lacks send them along!
Has anyone pitched the comic More than Meets the Eye to you yet? Itâs a very gay action-adventure comedic drama with robots and you would probably love it (especially if youâre lgbt and/or have good taste). Hereâs a few posts/articles that will tell you why youâd love it:
This article review/retrospective was what got me to read MTMTE. (warning - it has a bunch of spoilers, that didnât bother me but might bother you)
My semi-jokey MTMTE sales pitch
@zzxidâs salespitch with dancing rats
This full entire page of radical space socialist philosophy
15 Reasons Why MTMTE/the sequel is The Best Transformers Comic (warning - has spoilers, though some will prob go over your head as a new reader)
Kiss me, Chromedome - retrospective article by The Guardian, contains some spoilers
How/Where to Read
Okay, maybe youâre convinced. Now you want to know how/where to read MTMTE. Got you covered:
Detailed guide by @gaymilesedgeworth: How to start reading Transformers Comics
My very short answer: just read MTMTE in trade paperback form. That way all the issues are in order and you get all the extra stuff (there are prose stories after a couple issues that are very important so donât skip them!) Theyâre available that way as both physical and digital books.
Hereâs some ways to get access, legally (US centric, sorry):
If your local library has Hoopla (digital library subscription service), you may have access to some of the MTMTE trades that way. Theyâd be here; but check if you library has Hoopla first.
Your local library very well might have physical copies, so check their website!
If not and youâre very patient you can often request inter-library loans (your library borrows the books from another library) or request your library purchase materials.
You can buy digital trades via either IDW or Comixology. Comixology also includes the first 5 volumes in their comics subscription service. Iâve seen the series go on sale on both of these sites at least 4 times in the past 6 months, so keep an eye out! (Sometimes IDW participates in humble bundles, which are great, but those sales are far more infrequent)
You can also buy them in trade form from wherever you can buy books/comics. US links: Amazon, B&N, Comic Store Locators
Character Guides
So youâve picked up this comic and oh boy there are a lot of robots. Youâre a little intimidated. Maybe youâre having a hard time telling them apart.
If you have the paperback, thereâs a guide to the characters on the back cover/the last page of the digital volume. See a copy here.
Itâs okay if you keep reading not knowing who these robots are. For real. Youâll get the hang of it. Donât worry if it takes you awhile and youâre confused. Everyoneâs a little lost the first time through.
Some helpful posts in case youâre struggling:
Hereâs a guide that matches appearance -> name, and one that matches name -> background info (both spoiler free for issues 1-22)
A visual guide by @squireofgeekdomâ and @kscinewtâ: here
Another helpful visual character guide by @bluering8: here
If youâre confused and need help, please ask! Iâm willing to answer questions, I know @gaymilesedgeworth has volunteered to answer new reader questions. (Willing to help out new readers? Lemme know and Iâll make this a list)
Lore & Background Info
Okay, so maybe now youâve gotten into it. You want more information, you want to know all the background lore, you want to dig deep. Awesome! Got you covered!
The holy grail of Transformers information, TFwiki. A slightly snarky, overly-minutely-detailed wiki for the digital age.
Theyâve also got a tumblr if youâve got questions.
And Chris McFeely, one of the main editors, runs a Youtube series called The Basics where he explains characters/concepts across continuities
The podcast Sound.wav has episodes talking about every issue of MTMTE in great detail.
The writer of More than Meets the Eye, James Roberts, answers fan questions on his twitter. Iâve archived a lot of those questions at @jrtweetsindexâ.
More than Meets the Eye has a soundtrack, because of course it does. People have made playlists collecting it on spotify and youtube.
Further Reading
I finished MTMTE, whatâs next?
If you want the direct sequel to MTMTE, go straight to Lost Light, the sequel series. Itâs still ongoing and (as of right now) 12 issues have been released. There are spoilers for it EVERYWHERE on Tumblr, fair warning.
There are also a bunch of other series within the IDW comics universe, depending on what youâre interested in.
@zandergb has a chronological listing of all the IDW comics
TFwiki summarizes the IDW comics line
alt chronological guide
another guide/reading order.
You donât have to read all the books! If you want to just read Lost Light/MTMTE, you can do just that.
Thereâs also a bunch of animated series, which donât exist in the same continuity as the IDW comics. Some of them are well liked.
@ponett has a guide thatâll help you decide which youâd enjoy
And hereâs a brief guide by TFWiki
Thereâs also the Michael Bay movies which are awful and so is he. Not gonna recommend watching them, but if you wanted to learn about film theory by listening to Lindsay Ellis dissect them, thereâs a youtube series for that.
Fan Stuff
Okay...but what about fan content and fanfic and art and community events?
First thing to know: Transformers content is posted on tumblr under the tag Maccadam. (more detailed explanation why) A lot of mtmte content is also under âmtmteâ, so look there too. I only use Maccadam if I think a post deserves to be seen by a lot of people but opinions vary.
Second thing to know - the sequel to MTMTE, Lost Light is still being published and you will see ALL SORTS OF SPOILERS for it on Tumblr. To mitigate the damage, try blocking âLL Spoilersâ âLost Light Spoilersâ and âWednesday Spoilersâ. You cannot avoid it all, so if you donât want anything spoiled, get caught up on both MTMTE and Lost Light before browsing around Tumblr.
Fanfiction:
Warning! A lot of Transformers fanfiction is smut. Please take a moment to integrate this fact into your understanding of the universe. If you can handle that, go ahead to AO3.
If youâre curious about all the terminology used in those fics, hereâs a guide to it (not every writer uses every word, but this will get you started)
If youâre not into the idea of robots having sex, hereâs a link to AO3 with my personal best-effort safe-search (no guarantees, relies upon people tagging properly)
And hereâs a blog dedicated to recommending good sfw transformers fanfiction
If you want to know more about Transformers fanfic, I did a whole statistical survey of it, cause Iâm a dork.
Hereâs an old-school Transformers-only fanfic archive (I donât see a category for IDW comics but maybe you can find somehing)
Fanart&Fanfic Events/Zines/Gift Exchanges/Collaborative Projects:
As many active projects as I could find - Iâll try to keep this one updated
Fan Artists:
(same warning as the fanfic - thereâs a goodly amount of transformers pornographic art, be aware of that and block ânsfwâ if necessary)
There are a ton of active fanartists who draw IDW Transformers art. If you search a bit under âMaccadamâ youâll find them.
@iaconlibrary reblogs a great deal of fanart & is a great place to start browsing
Roleplay:
If youâre into roleplaying on tumblr @teletrans-comm-unit runs a master list of active rp blogs
Transformers: Lost and Found is a long-running independent game set on the Lost Light
TF:Galaxy appears to be a forum-based tf roleplay game
My Favorite Jokes:
The best amazon review
Emotional labor (nsfw-ish warning)
Bros with Vows
Hands
Conventions:
There are Transformers-specific conventions, which is pretty cool! I know nothing about them but tfwiki has some info: Official and Unofficial conventions.
Regrettable Opinions:
hey this is just a quick guide of things not to do so you donât hurt other people in the community
Do not compare Megatron to Hitler. The comparison is both vapid and offensive, as Jewish members of this community have pointed out time and again.
Donât say transphobic/homophobic/racist/antisemitic/sexist things. Youâre better than that!
Donât attack the creators of the books/harass them on social media/make bizarre unfounded accusations of them acting in bad faith
weâre really lucky that JRo and the other creators interact with us & answer questions and donât you dare screw that up, Iâm trusting you.
on a less serious but useful etiquette note: donât tag creators into negative reviews of their work/people complaining about their work. Itâs rude to the creator & the reviewer.
That was a short list but remember to also treat other people with respect & that itâs okay to disengage with content/people that upset you.
Fandom:
Thereâs a guide on Fanlore, but itâs freakishly outdated and doesnât even mention the comics. If youâre a informed tf fan maybe you should update it. đ
Tumblr!
MTMTE is a pretty small community on Tumblr, but there are a few cool folks. Remember, âmaccadamâ and âmtmteâ are your tags of choice
Various websites!
Since the transformers fandom is super old, there are a bunch of dedicated websites with traditional forums to chat on. (most of these are news sites that also contain forums) idk anything about them but maybe forums are your thing:
TFW2005 - big site with a large community but be warned there appear to be more than a few alarmingly bigoted people on that site
TFormers
Cybertron.CA
Allspark.com
Seibertron
Iâm gonna throw the IDW TF reddit on this list rather than make a new section
Discord!
thereâs at least two active discords at the moment. I know nothing about them or discord, but maybe one of them would be to your liking:
#1 - run by @zzxid
#2 - run by ??
The community is, like all fan communities, is a mix of good and bad, awkward and friendly, opinionated and goofy, self-serious and offensive. You wonât like or agree with everyone and there are some folks you should probably block.
Just find some people who share your general outlook & are interacting with the books in the same way you want to đ
-Lynn. I have no qualifications to write this guide, I am not an authority of anything. I just really want you to love these books. Last updated on Dec 24, 2017, click through to check for any updates.
