Map: Dollar Store Blight in Detroit 2023

Bridge Detroit reporter, Jena Brooker, did some incredible open data digging to find that Dollar Tree, owned by Family Dollar, was cited with 2,400 blight tickets since 2020. Dollar store moratoriums have been put in place in more than 50 cities. Nationwide, dollar stores are known to have higher rates of crime, lower quality products, and have a negative effect on suppressing new grocery stores.

While lots of “data journalism” in the US comes down to Excel spreadsheets weighted with polling data, this is what real data journalism is. Bullied over a Freedom of Information request for environmental data

As data reporter, I'm used to working with databases, not being the subject of one.

But following an aggressive episode to persuade me to give up on an FOI request pursuing government transparency sent to the Romanian Environment Ministry, I ended up in a database.

In particular, a map of media freedom abuses, which I warmly recommend to any journalist who has ever faced harassment, threats, humiliation or abuse of any kind in pursuit of transparency.

Media Freedom Map features the particulars of this case, currently under investigation at the Romanian Ministry of Environment - https://lnkd.in/ek9ikRH6.

The International Press Institute has expressed “concern over major obstruction facing journalists in accessing public data on illegal logging and deforestation”.

Difficult access to environmental data is part of EU’s logging infringement against Romania, currently unfolding.

Access to quality data is the major hurdle among data journalists (57%). Lack of financial resources (50%) is in second place this year after gaining three percentage points compared to 2021. Time pressure is the third biggest challenge (49%). As in 2021, lack of knowledge in data analysis or visualisation is felt as a bigger hindering factor than lack of adequate software. Comparatively few believe reported lack of interest from consumers as a challenge to producing more (18%).

Hello all!! Some of you may know I've been at a convention this weekend with my beloved partner and as tiring as it is, its been one of the best weekends of my life! Not one but THREE f/o guests were here and I drew pictures and got signatures from ALL of them!

Steve Whitmire was amazingly down to earth and Brent Spiner was very sweet, but an absolute HIGHLIGHT of my weekend was meeting Chris Sabat! 💖💖

The moment I handed him that art he clocked it as self ship, saying "that's you, right? You portray yourself perfectly!" And not only was he very kind but he also wanted to take a photo with me, my partner (dressed as Spamton hehe) and the drawing!!

I damn near cried and I'm STILL riding that high! And I want this to inspire any others who might have the opportunity to meet your f/os' actors!! They're still people like us, and I assure you they're glad we love something they brought to life as much as we do! 💖💘💖💘💖💘💖
