the mid credits scene confused me lmao. i guess it’s the council thing from the loki series

but overall, this movie slapped. i say that about every movie but still. i loved the emphasis on scott and cassie’s relationship, i thought the special effects looked cool, and the creativity put into making the people of the quantum realm diverse but still very human was tangible.

10/10 good movie, though i do think it’s funny that ant man went from “thief that hangs out with his bestie in san francisco and occasionally fights with the avengers” to “oh my god he saved everyone and is now stuck with a very powerful multiversal enemy”

i think everyone forgets what a good movie ant-man was and how it had everything a marvel movie needed.

✓ cohesive plot that actually makes sense ✓ fleshed-out side characters that add depth to the story and protagonist ✓ an antagonist with a good/real motive ✓ being funny, but not at the cost of the story and not for simple comedic relief ✓ character interactions that makes sense (*cough*whatthefuckwasthemorbiusendcreditsscene*cough*) ✓ plot points that draw on human emotion

i love scott lang, our anti-capitalist king and bestest father in the world. i love luis, the heart and comedy of the story, the person who stuck by scotty the entire time. i love cassie, the adorable daughter of scott who refused to believe that the father who was always there for her was a bad person. i love the comparison of hope and darren, how they were treated by hank and how they decided to handle their betrayl (with darren cross being the "bad" and hope pym being the "good"). i love hope pym, the woman still grieving for her mother, finding forgiveness in her heart for the father that pushed her away but inevitable still cares for her. i love the campiness of luis' narration style. i love love LOVE the ant-man movie, it is definitely one of my favorite marvel films.

Okay, I take it back. Besides Cassie, there's one other character in this movie that I like. And it's kind of amazing because I was not impressed by this character in his previous appearance.

Darren Motherfucking Cross, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Chewing Scenery, is a treat. I love this little shit for brains. I love everything he does.

I wasn't very impressed by Darren in the first movie because he's such a fucking cartoon character of a person and they wanted so badly for us to take him seriously.

Now he's back and, worse, he's doing the Revenge Villain thing. It's this thing that happens in superhero comies, where a returning villain loses sight of their actual motive or characterization after too many repeat appearances and just turns into, "I am bad and I hate the hero, I am going to get revenge against the hero for foiling my wicked schemes, that is my character now."

Like every superhero's rogues gallery is about 80% Revenge Villain saturated. "Bad guy wants revenge" is a very easy motivation that will carry you through 459 separate unrelated evil schemes from this same guy.

So we've got a lame villain doing a lame plot and... somehow that wraps all the way around to beautiful. It's the tone of the thing. Unlike in the first movie, we are NOT meant to take Darren seriously. At all.

We're meant to take Kang seriously. We're meant to take Scott and Cassie's relationship seriously. But while all of that serious stuff is happening over there, there's also this fucking clown egg over here vowing himself to be Scott's personal archnemesis and it's funny.
