You know, it would be nice to have an Ant-Man and the Wasp prequel starring Hank and Janet. There are some unanswered questions about their history with S.H.I.E.L.D. and the events that led to Janet's "death".
1 - What was their mission? "Cold War era conflict threatens to make a nuclear war go hot" is the general vibe. But who were they up against that warrented a top secret S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops response?
2 - Why does Hank refuse to put wings and blasters on the male suits anyway?
3 - No, seriously, what was their mission? They can't have just been fighting "the Soviets". Like. Who were they up against that was capable of launching a missile and motivated to kickstart nuclear armaggeddon, but only had a single missile in their possession? A threat to the entire globe, but capable of being completely thwarted by the failure of this one missile. What was happening here? I want to know!

Submariner Summer 9
Alright Namor Nation, #SubmarinerSummer time, part 9: Tales to Astonish #78, The Prince and the Puppet! The cover tells us we'll be dealing with the "somewhat macabre" Puppet Master, who's familiar to FF fans. Meanwhile the Title page puts us back in the dramatic standoff from last ish
So yes, a US ship is uninterested in why Namor is telling them to stop (cause they're destroying Atlantis), and a US soldier (specifically a corporal, judging from his stripes) thinks he's gonna be the one to stop Namor with a rifle. C'mon, corp.
To Dr. Pym's credit, he tries to stop the soldier, and it all goes haywire
As far as Namor is concerned, good enough is good enough, he got what he wanted. Unbeknownst to those on the ship, though, but beknownst to us, for some reason the Puppet Master was listening in on ocean radio transmissions? So he springs into action, making a Namor puppet
For the unfamiliar, Puppet Master can control you if he makes a puppet of you. Having done so, he now takes control of Namor. Pym notices something is wrong ("he wouldn't walk away from a fight", sure, Hanks, but of course it wouldn't have been a fight if the US hadn't attacked 🙄)
Worried, Pym notes he's headed for the mainland and wishes he could send a warning. He doesn't want to blow his cover or leave his work (🙄) and the radio's dead, so the winsome Wasp steps in! Incidentally, this is a really lovely Wasp and very handsome Hank
Reaching the lair of the Puppet Master, Namor is set the task of...a bank robbery. Not the greatest supervillain plan ever known. Definitely no points for creativity. But as his puppet, Namor must obey, so to the bank he goes, making clever use of sprinklers to crack the vault
But, lo and behold, Namor didn't know what the heck he was doing as a bank robber and grabbed stuff useless to Puppet Master. So off he's sent to try again, but this time he's spotted by the National Guard, and Puppet Master orders him to fight
*to the DEATH!*
Cliffhanger!
Gotta admit, this issue took a somewhat contrived turn, but it is interesting bringing in an FF villain to contend with Namor. Plus Puppet Master is creepy.
Incidentally, what happens with Wasp after this will go on to be detailed in Avengers #26, but this is NOT a Hank&Janet read through
At any rate, stay tuned because next issue of this series some dangling plot threads get picked up and come together in Tales to Astonish #79: When Rises The Behemoth!

Quantumania... did the critics and I watch the same movie???
I swear, people expect Endgame out of everything these days and it’s getting old. Marvel had the impossible task of finishing an Ant Man trilogy while simultaneously introducing Kang the Conquerer (holy shit that sounds even more difficult when I say it out loud) to general, non-comic fanatic and non-Disney Plus subscribing audiences, and they did about the best they could have done. In my opinion, they did great.
That was the most fun I’ve had in a Marvel movie since No Way Home. I think Wakanda Forever was of a higher quality, but this was something else I needed for my trust to be earned back. I have my faith back in Marvel movie magic. It’s still there, and I couldn’t be more hyped for where Ant Man goes next. :)
(PS: Jonathan Majors is my hero and I now want all the MODOK merch)
