A new voice speaks behind him, deep and resonating and though Leo's never heard it, it sends a shiver up his spine. 

"For someone who prayed to me so often, I would have thought you'd be pleased to see me."

This makes Leo to whip around, because he has never had a habit of praying to any one immortal, not even his father. 

Standing behind him is a washed out version of Thanatos, as if all the color was leached from him, replaced with whites and reds, the most unnerving of which is in his eyes. 

"Cupid," Leo says, understanding the comment now, and internally grimacing at the accuracy. 

"The Greeks know me as Eros," the god says, with the barest incline of his head to show that Leo was correct. 

"Okay, Error," Leo says, clenching his fist. “What do you want?"

The god approaches him, and Leo makes himself stay planted where he is, not looking away from those red eyes.

"You were always brave, young hero," the god says instead of answering the damn question. "But have you finally learned to stop hiding and running from what is difficult?"

He has the audacity to use the end of his bow to tilt Leo's chin up even higher, and it is nothing like when Calypso would encourage him to look at an amazing view, or when Nyssa would turn his attention to something they were working on in the forge, or even how Damien-

Leo jerks his head away but doesn't give Eros the satisfaction of seeing him close his eyes. 

"Have you finally learned to look on the face of love?" Eros asked, unbothered by Leo's reaction. 

"I've looked on scarier," Leo snaps, and that is the truth. 

"And yet..." the god says, stepping to the side, beginning to circle him. "You want to run from me."

Rolling his eyes, Leo asks, "Can you get to the point?"

"You plan to run from me," Eros repeats. "Turn from love, because it has become difficult."

Leo just looks at him.

"Okay, I don't say this lightly," Leo says. "Because like, I've met and tried to have a conversation with the literal Narcissus, but, dude, you are so full of yourself.”

Having brought up Cupid I am now once again thinking about Zagreus!Nico. I've mentioned this before, but it's really weird that Cupid shows so much interest in Nico, to the point where he was keeping tabs on him back when he was a child in the 1930s. Even if Cupid could see Nico's future to some extent, gay kids struggling with internalized homophobia are tragically far from uncommon, and on a lighter note so are said kids ultimately finding love and acceptance. And if it was because Nico's a child of the Underworld or because he had to be taken from his own time and dropped into the next century to find love I'd expect a mention of Cupid being similarly interested in Hazel, since other than the gay part she's in the same boat as Nico (and honestly given the Sammy-Leo situation her love life is in some ways infinitely more interesting than Nico's is). Basically it doesn't make a lot of sense for Cupid to be so interested in Nico that he was actively keeping an eye on him and waiting for him to come back to speak to Cupid face to face if Nico was just a gay kid in the '30s, son of Hades or no.

However! It does make sense for Cupid to be keeping tabs on Nico if Nico is actually a god reborn. After all, Nico's not the first or last gay kid to find love and acceptance when he never thought he would. He's also not the first (and hopefully not the last) child of the Underworld to find love and acceptance. None of that would be much of a reason to draw Cupid's attention to the extent we see. But a god reborn in a mortal body whose destiny involves falling in love with a mortal the way a mortal would, presumably before ultimately regaining his godhood? Now that's exciting! That doesn't happen all that often! If I was the god of love I'd be watching that situation closely, because what happens when Nico becomes a god again and Will is still mortal? Heck, just the idea of a god loving a mortal in such a mortal way would be worth watching, because would that sort of love survive in a godly mind? Gods don't tend to love like that, love for gods tends to involve a lot less devotion and loyalty and a lot more cheating on their spouses and regularly getting their lovers killed. I like the idea of Cupid seeing young Nico and just knowing what was up with him and wanting to watch and see what happened.

hazel & thanatos : nico & cupid scene comparison

both of these scenes are about identity and truth at odds with innate self-preservation. both gods reference each other and acknowledge their similarities. cupid references hazel, and thanatos even references nico (didn't include that scene but hazel asks thanatos if he knows where nico is). jason and frank both also face obstacles through these gods, but the true tests are for nico and hazel. the point of both scenes is to demand that both characters face their greatest fears, and force hazel and nico to be honest about why they have come so far on their respective journeys, and admit what is is that they truly want. also, thanatos is fairly passive and hazel experiences more visceral attraction to him than she does to her series love interests, whereas nico's confession is very blunt and unromantic, and cupid is very violent, causing physical and emotional agony and further blurring the domains of the two gods.

#other difference between this scenes is that a reader could be gay and/or in unrequited love but can not have been dead before #thanatos was also very much a test for frank too but it doesn't foil cupid at all whereas hazel's interaction with him does #also i'm not surprised hazel and thanatos never became a ship because this fandom pays hazel dust and also you don't really #learn anything new about hazel in this scene (although it is one of her most insane moments) #but i'm actually very surprised nico and cupid never got shipped. like this is one of the most talked-about scenes from this series #he shot nico with an arrow. he's the god of love. he has an infamous mythological romance. you'd think somebody would've hopped on that #just statistically speaking with the amount of nico fic out there #hazel levesque #nico di angelo #cupid pjo #thanatos pjo

Nico and Percy's dynamic through the series is eternally funny to me, because it's just. like.

Percy's having a constant mental struggle between his fatal flaw of loyalty with a promise he made to Bianca to protect Nico, versus his Big 3 kid desire to maim other Big 3 kids / Poseidon descendant urge to totally maim Nico specifically. He hates Nico so so much. He thinks Nico's annoying and weird at best, and creepy/sketchy when he's older. The only positive thoughts Percy has towards Nico are "He's Bianca's brother and Bianca was my friend and I owe her/He's Hazel's brother and Hazel is my friend and would kill me if I was mean to him," "He's a powerful asset and useful ally (if questionable)," and "He's kinda pathetic and I feel maybe a little bad about it." Percy has multiple occasions throughout the series where he strongly considers - and on one occasionally actually goes through with - throttling Nico.

Meanwhile, Nico is following around Percy like a lost puppy. He explicitly can never bring himself to even dislike anything about Percy no matter how hard he tries. He has a whole bit in BoO where he's mentally going "UGH he's so stupid BUT IT'S ENDEARING HOW DARE HE." He's totally smitten. He's making deals with his dad for Percy. He's making convoluted plans to help Percy stand a chance against Kronos. During the entirety of BoTL it's like he's playing tsundere - "I'm helping NOT PERCY SPECIFICALLY with this quest! Me helping Percy would be SILLY because I DEFINITELY HATE HIM." Then he proceeds to show up to Percy's birthday party to basically ask him on a weird date and spend the entire next book scrambling around trying to help him or protect him or impress him. And Percy could not give less of a shit.

Just. That dynamic is so funny to me. Percy is the founder of the Nico Protection Club in that he's the one they're all protecting Nico from and meanwhile Nico is throwing himself at Percy to the point where the literal god of gay love calls him out on it.

Idk it just feels like Cupid is this enthusiastic vengeful fangirl who’s so enamored by this one character (Nico) thus just decides to say fuck it to canon (aka Aphrodite) and proceeds to hyperfixate in everything said character stands for including his self-antagonized one-sided crush.

✨Alternate end to words frost once wrote✨ The game of truth or dare goes differently. Nico's heart has been skewered, Leo reaches a wall he can't turn from, Will makes a decision sooner, and Chiara doesn't have to hurt the way she did. read on ao3

Excerpt under the cut:

"Okay then," Damien says. "You good?"

"Yeah," Leo says to him, not to the group as a whole like he has been. 

The quiet, serious way Leo's dark eyes look up at Damien makes Nico feel like he's just been struck through the chest with a spear. And then, placing a hand over the ache to rub it away, he sees a phantom of an arrowhead protruding from his sternum, casting an eerie illumination over his jacket and hands. 

He looks up to see if anyone else has noticed, but the whole theater has frozen.

For a moment, Nico thinks he's been sucked into a nightmare scape, but then a voice that he never wanted to hear again speaks to him in his mind, saying, "Watch. Watch what will happen of your own making."

The unsettling pinkish-red illumination spreads out from the arrow, reanimating those around him, letting the fire resume its flickering. Now the scene looks like it's happening in slow motion. 

That slower passage of time gives Nico ample opportunity to watch the way Damien's hand comes up to cup Leo's cheek. Not the one that Nico can see, because that would have been so much simpler. Instead, he can see the entirety of Leo's profile as Damien tilts his face up into his, as his eyes fall shut, his lashes fan out on the apple of his cheek, as their noses brush and then slot against each other, as Leo's lips part when Damien's touch them. 

His limbs feel heavy and numb like the ghost of an arrow is actually bleeding him dry.

The two standing across the fire don't have his issue, because Leo's hands rest on Damien's chest, sliding up around the back of his neck to disappear under the fold of his jacket collar, and Damien's free hand grasps the dip of Leo's waist, pulling him close. 

It's not the kind of peck that people give in spin the bottle or the chaste press of lips that Nico's experienced. It's not performative either, the kind of joking embrace with exaggeratedly wandering hands and interruptions for laughter. 

It looks like a real, real kiss.

"okay, love you too. kiss annabeth for me." she said before hanging up, and releasing herself with a loud cry. she screamed all of the voices she kept inside while she hit her orgasm, panting on leo's desk. it didn't take much longer for leo to cum after her, a breathless chuckle leaving his lips.

"leo we can't— the house is too crowded and-" leo kissed her neck secretly, only making her squirm under his touch. "that's why no one would notice." he whispered in her ear.

percy was talking with annabeth when he saw y/n taking leo's hand and dragging him to somewhere. "y/n!" he called, making the couple turn around.

"w-what's up?" she asked, trying to sound not too panicked. percy didn't noticed, thanks to gods. "where are you two going?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. which annabeth was going to be mad at him for it later.

"i gotta pee man, and she's leading me to the bathroom." leo explained, hiding behind her so that percy won't see his boner. percy was going to say something, but was intrupted by annabeth.

"okay then, we wouldn't want leo to pee in his pants on your birthday, right babe?" annabeth asked, not caring if percy was going to answer or not. and not waiting for it either. "but-" percy tried to say.

"great! be quick though, we're about to give him his presents." annabeth said like she knew, she winked to the couple. y/n gave her a warm smile, in a way only she could understand what she meant behind it. thank you, you're the best!

Fascinated by the implication that Nico is tied to Cupid in some way beyond their one meeting in Croatia. Favonius has been keeping an eye on him since he was six in the certainty he'd eventually return to meet with Cupid (and is glad to see him again, which is nice) and asks "Do you know how I ended up serving Cupid?" which has a heavy suggestion that Nico is serving Cupid too whether he knows it or not (I didn't add the emphasis on "I"). And while Cupid is mostly challenging them for the sceptre, him targeting Nico seems personal in a way that most godly "Do this if you want the thing" challenges don't, which might just be because love is a very personal thing, but... I don't know, it feels like there's something going on behind the scenes here that we don't know the full details of yet! Especially with how Cupid goes out of his way to visit Nico in his dreams in the TSatS excerpt. I want to know what's going on with this!

y'all i was just re-reading blood of olympus, and i came across the chapter where Nico loses his shit at Bryce Lawrence and "ghostifies" him (in Coach Hedge's words), and I found a little quote that interested me.

"Bryce chuckled, clearly enjoying himself. 'Oh Reyna. You've got his back? It's going to be so fun dragging you before a tribunal, forcing you to confess that you killed your father. I hope they'll execute you in the ancient way- sewn into a sack with a rabid dog, then thrown into a river. I've always wanted to see that. I can't wait until your little secret comes out.'

What's so interesting to me is the wording. 'Until your little secret comes out'.

It's almost like a parallel to Cupid and Nico. Cupid mocking and taunting Nico, forcing him to reveal his darkest secret against his will. Taking pleasure in it. Just like Bryce Lawrence was doing.

I think that's what set Nico off. Not the fact that Reyna was in danger or that Bryce was just generally an asshole- those 6 words that sent him back to the Cupid scene. Of all the things that happened to him, that had to be one of the most traumatizing (speaking from experience, getting outed is NOT fun). Him lashing out and completely demolishing Bryce Lawrence was the trauma response.
