really sad that miraculous were just handed out all at once (ex: penalteam) because i did imagine that each miraculous and their quality would have actually been a lesson/ideal about the world that marinette learned along the way in order to understand the guardianship better. yk kids show, lets have episodic plotlines where the main character learns a lesson to teach the kids at home but via miraculous. through picking someone that embodies OR struggles with a certain trait, she could see how that person uses that value to shape their reality. for example, lila and alya both using the fox have different ideas of illusions; lila creates illusions of her success to make herself interesting versus alya's focus on reporting and breaking through illusions. those are different perspectives on the same value and can both be useful depending on the scenario. or how does mylene interpret the mouse miraculous differently compared to marinette? is there a different perspective to be had that marinette didn't think about when she used it? would love marinette learning more about the miraculous through her friends and their worldviews. alas, they use the miraculous to play soccer. can season 6 have lila (or whoever her name is) make an akuma that forces ladybug and the brady bunch into a socratic seminar for me

Honestly Ben 10 is probably one of the most based science fiction series out there by sheer virtue of it having the balls to showcase any alien concept it wanted to no matter how ridiculous, and whenever someone is like “there’s no way in Hell that could ever be scientifically feasible”, it dared to look them in the eyes and go “Yeah, well, this is a world where magic and superpowered mutants also exist. What are you gonna do? Cry about it? You grown ass adult who’s expecting scientific feasibility out of a cartoon meant to sell toys to preteen boys that has lore so inconsistent it’s almost impossible to tell what’s canon and what’s non-canon? LMAO loser.”

I mean OS had it all- obviously aliens but not only that, at minimum 10 of them; mutants in daily life across at least America, no doubt in other places too; magic, albeit one without a system beyond ‘there’s a spellbook and some charms’. The shift to purely alien in AF makes the wonderful nonsense sci-fi stuff into frustrating logic trees of ‘how does xenobiology get this powerful’ which I had definitely fallen into. Ben 10 is unabashedly science fantasy, so why not go the full fantasy and bring back mutants and magic, haha!

Admittedly a good implementation of magic in a series tends to follow a magic system, which I’m not especially great at coming up with, especially in comparison to speculative biology which come with pre-established rules. But hey, I don’t exactly expect it to be fleshed out, at least not as well as the alien aspect of Ben 10; even then, there’s only so much fleshed out, it’s to tease us into making lore for it lmao-

To be fair though, Ben 10 itself had to whack itself on the cheek in order to be reminded of its magic and especially mutant parts, which unfortunately in the latter case was central to major retcons so…

Paging through a timeline today and the First Age was so very long ago even in what you might call the early Second Age. There is more time between the founding of Eregion (c SA 700) and the War of Wrath than there was in time in the entire First Age (about 600 years); Aldarion, living around the same time as the raising of Ost-in-Edhil, is six generations removed from Elros and the five generations between were all born in the Second Age: how different the lives of our own great-great-great-grandparents! And that's the earliest Second Age. By the time Eregion falls, 1700 years have passed since the Silmarils were set in their resting places; the Last Alliance happened around 3600 years after the Nirnaeth. And another three millenia in the Third Age! "Before the fall of Gondolin and Nargothrond in elder days" has very much the air of "a long time ago."

The First Age is so removed in time - and space! - from later events. Sometimes I feel this isn't appreciated enough. The Second and Third Ages have their own stories.

If anything, I think the First Age can be overrated in importance? Well, not in its own right, but in discussing later events.

#meta #i do think that for all that the creation of the silmarils and the creation of the rings are closer together in time #than either is to the destruction of the one ring #(probably. let's ignore valarin years) #the rings are part of one story and the silmarils another #when it comes to the ~story of arda or whatever #the dividing line is the war of wrath not the destruction of the trees or the akallabeth #(imo ofc!) #i admit to getting frustrated at times #galadriel giving three hairs to gimli can be seen in light of her refusing feanor but it's about *her and gimli* #there's lots to compare and contrast between the three rings and the silmarils if you want #but the three and their creation have meaning and value in their own right and you can talk about them meaningfully w/o reference to feanor #if you say 'maglor' to legolas his first association might be 'who?' or it might be 'oh yeah great songwriter love his stuff!' #(it's not all about the sons of feanor. who are secondary characters even in age one.) #(unlike feanor who's not at all secondary. but feanor's story is quite separate from that of the sons in some if not all ways)
