actually while I think about it, I want to give a shout out to every congenitally disabled person whose disability was not discovered until they were a teenager or adult, and spent their entire lives up to that point being told they were lazy, stupid, uncoordinated, or not trying hard enough
shout out to all of us who should have been helped from the day we were born, and instead were just made to feel like we were worthless for not being able to perform like our abled peers

Eye Problems In Children
Eyes should be cleaned properly at the time of the birth. Antibiotic drops should be instilled in the eyes. If there is any pus discharge it can be dangerous, particularly if it is caused by a bacteria known as "gonococci".

Where to Start Your Research When Writing a Disabled Character
[large text: Where to Start Your Research When Writing a Disabled Character]
So you have decided that you want to make a disabled character! Awesome. But what's next? What information should you decide on at the early phrase of making the character?
This post will only talk about the disability part of the character creation process. Obviously, a disabled character needs a personality, interests, and backstory as every other one. But by including their disability early in the process, you can actually get it to have a deeper effect on the character - disability shouldn't be their whole life, but it should impact it. That's what disabilities do.
If you don't know what disability you would want to give them in the first place;
[large text: If you don't know what disability you would want to give them in the first place;]
Start broad. Is it sensory, mobility related, cognitive, developmental, autoimmune, neurodegenerative; maybe multiple of these, or maybe something else completely? Pick one and see what disabilities it encompasses; see if anything works for your character. Or...
If you have a specific symptom or aid in mind, see what could cause them. Don't assume or guess; not every wheelchair user is vaguely paralyzed below the waist with no other symptoms, not everyone with extensive scarring got it via physical trauma. Or...
Consider which disabilities are common in real life. Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, stroke, cataracts, diabetes, intellectual disability, neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, thyroid disorders, autism, dwarfism, arthritis, cancers, brain damage, just to name a few.
Decide what specific type of condition they will have. If you're thinking about them having albinism, will it be ocular, oculocutaneous, or one of the rare syndrome-types? If you want to give them spinal muscular atrophy, which of the many possible onsets will they have? If they have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which one out of the 13 different types do they have? Is their amputation below, or above the knee (it's a major difference)? Not all conditions will have subtypes, but it's worth looking into to not be surprised later. This will help you with further research.
If you're really struggling with figuring out what exact disability would make sense for your character, you can send an ask. Just make sure that you have tried the above and put actual specifics in your ask to give us something to work with. You can also check out our "disabled character ideas" tag.
Here are some ideas for a character using crutches.
Here are some ideas for a character with a facial difference (obligatory link: what is a facial difference?).
If you already know what disability your character is going to have;
[large text: If you already know what disability your character is going to have;]
Start by reading about the onset and cause of the condition. It could be acquired, congenital, progressive, potentially multiple of these. They could be caused by an illness, trauma, or something else entirely. Is your character a congenital amputee, or is it acquired? If acquired - how recently? Has it been a week, or 10 years? What caused them to become disabled - did they have meningitis, or was it an accident? Again, check what your options are - there are going to be more diverse than you expect.
Read about the symptoms. Do not assume or guess what they are. You will almost definitely discover something new. Example: a lot of people making a character with albinism don't realize that it has other symptoms than just lack of melanin, like nystagmus, visual impairment, and photophobia. Decide what your character experiences, to what degree, how frequently, and what do they do (or don't do) to deal with it.
Don't give your character only the most "acceptable" symptoms of their disability and ignore everything else. Example: many writers will omit the topic of incontinence in their para- and tetraplegic characters, even though it's extremely common. Don't shy away from aspects of disability that aren't romanticized.
Don't just... make them abled "because magic". If they're Deaf, don't give them some ability that will make them into an essentially hearing person. Don't give your blind character some "cheat" so that they can see, give them a cane. Don't give an amputee prosthetics that work better than meat limbs. To have a disabled character you need to have a character that's actually disabled. There's no way around it.
Think about complications your character could experience within the story. If your character wears their prosthetic a lot, they might start to experience skin breakdown or pain. Someone who uses a wheelchair a lot has a risk of pressure sores. Glowing and Flickering Fantasy Item might cause problems for someone photophobic or photosensitive. What do they do when that happens, or how do they prevent that from happening?
Look out for comorbidities. It's rare for disabled people to only have one medical condition and nothing else. Disabilities like to show up in pairs. Or dozens.
If relevant, consider mobility aids, assistive devices, and disability aids. Wheelchairs, canes, rollators, braces, AAC, walkers, nasal cannulas, crutches, white canes, feeding tubes, braillers, ostomy bags, insulin pumps, service dogs, trach tubes, hearing aids, orthoses, splints... the list is basically endless, and there's a lot of everyday things that might count as a disability aid as well - even just a hat could be one for someone whose disability requires them to stay out of the sun. Make sure that it's actually based on symptoms, not just your assumptions - most blind people don't wear sunglasses, not all people with SCI use a wheelchair, upper limb prosthetics aren't nearly as useful as you think. Decide which ones your character could have, how often they would use them, and if they switch between different aids.
Basically all of the above aids will have subtypes or variants. There is a lot of options. Does your character use an active manual wheelchair, a powerchair, or a generic hospital wheelchair? Are they using high-, or low-tech AAC? What would be available to them? Does it change over the course of their story, or their life in general?
If relevant, think about what treatment your character might receive. Do they need medication? Physical therapy? Occupational therapy? Orientation and mobility training? Speech therapy? Do they have access to it, and why or why not?
What is your character's support system? Do they have a carer; if yes, then what do they help your character with and what kind of relationship do they have? Is your character happy about it or not at all?
How did their life change after becoming disabled? If your character goes from being an extreme athlete to suddenly being a full-time wheelchair user, it will have an effect - are they going to stop doing sports at all, are they going to just do extreme wheelchair sports now, or are they going to try out wheelchair table tennis instead? Do they know and respect their new limitations? Did they have to get a different job or had to make their house accessible? Do they have support in this transition, or are they on their own - do they wish they had that support?
What about *other* characters? Your character isn't going to be the only disabled person in existence. Do they know other disabled people? Do they have a community? If your character manages their disability with something that's only available to them, what about all the other people with the same disability?
What is the society that your character lives in like? Is the architecture accessible? How do they treat disabled people? Are abled characters knowledgeable about disabilities? How many people speak the local sign language(s)? Are accessible bathrooms common, or does your character have to go home every few hours? Is there access to prosthetists and ocularists, or what do they do when their prosthetic leg or eye requires the routine check-up?
Know the tropes. If a burn survivor character is an evil mask-wearer, if a powerchair user is a constantly rude and ungrateful to everyone villain, if an amputee is a genius mechanic who fixes their own prosthetics, you have A Trope. Not all tropes are made equal; some are actively harmful to real people, while others are just annoying or boring by the nature of having been done to death. During the character creation process, research what tropes might apply and just try to trace your logic. Does your blind character see the future because it's a common superpower in their world, or are you doing the ancient "Blind Seer" trope?
Remember, that not all of the above questions will come up in your writing, but to know which ones won't you need to know the answers to them first. Even if you don't decide to explicitly name your character's condition, you will be aware of what they might function like. You will be able to add more depth to your character if you decide that they have T6 spina bifida, rather than if you made them into an ambiguous wheelchair user with ambiguous symptoms and ambiguous needs. Embrace research as part of your process and your characters will be better representation, sure, but they will also make more sense and seem more like actual people; same with the world that they are a part of.
This post exists to help you establish the basics of your character's disability so that you can do research on your own and answer some of the most common ("what are symptoms of x?") questions by yourself. If you have these things already established, it will also be easier for us to answer any possible questions you might have - e.g. "what would a character with complete high-level paraplegia do in a world where the modern kind of wheelchair has not been invented yet?" is much more concise than just "how do I write a character with paralysis?" - I think it's more helpful for askers as well; a vague answer won't be much help, I think.
I hope that this post is helpful!

another drawing of disabled* people hanging out chilling living life etc :-)
*technically the carer of the person in the pink wheelchair isn't disabled but carers are a part of the disabled people living life experience sometimes. so it counts 👍

Alright, due to popular request, I bring you the break down of the Taiwan Disease Personifications. Also, just so y’all know, the official explanations for the designs are not easy to find, so a lot of this is just from what I notice and what I know about the diseases
To start off, we have everyone’s favorite disease: COVID-19
Tumblr media
So, this is one of the designs where I could actually find the artist explanation, so I will be including that information plus a couple things I noticed and how I think it fits the disease. So let’s start with to crown. The reason for the inclusion of the crown is the reflect the name coronavirus, corona being the Latin word for crown. The face is partially obscured because of COVID’s tendency to hide itself. The bean bag chair that they are sitting on has many protrusions signifying the spike proteins. The different digital devices represent how the world went virtual during the pandemic and the news channels behind them represent the media’s freak out when COVID was at its height. The floor has an outline of the world because everywhere was affected by the pandemic. Also, if you look closely, they are wearing little Covid earrings.
Next up, we got Zika:
Tumblr media
I could not find an official artist statement for this design, so take my explanation with a grain of salt. So first off the red waist band reminds me of the red stripe that goes down the abdomen of the mosquito species that spreads Zika after it has fed. Also, the white markings on the black are also a characteristic of this species of mosquito. In fact, the design is the stripes on the chest look like the markings these mosquitoes have on their back. She presents female because it’s the female mosquitoes that bite and spread diseases. Her sleeves look like mosquito wings once again a reference to mosquitoes being the primary vectors of Zika. The area behind her has palm fronds to represent that Zika is a disease typically found in tropical climates.
Next up we have: Hansen’s Disease (aka Leprosy)
Tumblr media
This is one where I could find the artist statement due to it being a pretty recent one, however, I will say that at least the translation was a bit lacking in describing the reasoning of every detail. She is a mask maker because leprosy changes how people perceive those who are infected but it is something that can easily be removed with modern antibiotics. She has different accessories like the lion and crocodile headpiece that implicate the divine involvement because leprosy has been historically thought to be a punishment of the gods. The scales on her arm look like an allusion to the scaling pattern scars that those with leprosy would develop.
Next up: Rubella
Tumblr media
After a lot of digging I found the official profile for this design but it didn’t really explain the design choices so we are going to do more analysis on my end. So the pomegranate and the red dots represent the red rashes that come with rubella infections. The glasses I assume are to show how Rubella can lead to Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) which can occur in children if their mother had rubella while pregnant. One of the symptoms that comes with CRS is cataracts.
Next up: the plague
Tumblr media
I found the explanation on this and it just confirmed my own suspicions for certain design choices. So her design is very focused on death and mysticism because of how the Black Plague led to a lot of cultural focus on these two ideas. Behind her are old coins because of the economic impact the plague had on the civilizations of its time. The references to death are the skeletal pattern on her dress, and the scythe behind her and on her belt. The references to mysticism include the tarot cards she is holding and the crosses on her hat. On the tarot cards are designs referencing the three different forms the plague takes (bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic) as well as a posey which was used to try to ward of the plague in old times. On her hat is also a collection of plague doctor masks which is pretty self explanatory as to how that connects.
Next up: Ebola
Tumblr media
I couldn’t find the official explanation for this disease, so this is mostly speculation based on my analysis. Her outfit is red because of the hemorrhaging that comes with the disease. Specifically he lips are red because one of the more unique characteristics of Ebola is hiccuping up blood. The accessories seem to be inspired by central and western african traditional jewelry. There appear to be tribal masks on the necklace, I am not well versed in African art unfortunately, so any deeper meaning of these accessories are unfortunately lost on me. There are bats on the headdress because of bats being the natural host of Ebola. Her design is rather demonic because Ebola was so terrible for the areas affected, that people thought it could be caused be some great evil. The skulls are because of the extremely high death rate that comes with ebola. The leaves and fruits shown come from the African jungles which is typically where Ebola outbreaks start.
Next up: Novel Influenza A Virus Infections
Tumblr media
I actually found the artist explanation for this design! As a disease closely associated with birds, there are many elements linked to birds. There are many bird shadows, the hair that looks like feathers, and the beak shaped mask, feathers on his tie and a feather tattoo on right arm, and the “H-N” pin (H and N proteins of the influenza virus).
Next up: Dengue Fever
Tumblr media
Another one with an artist statement! Since only female mosquitoes bite, the character is set as a female. Her dark red lips represent mosquito’s instinct to bite, and she is holding a poisonous thornapple flower. She has mosquito wings tattooed on her back and thornapple flower tattooed on her arm. I have spent a long time looking into how the thornapple flower relates to dengue, but I haven’t had a lot of luck. From what I have seen is that the roots, seeds, and leaves are used in some traditional medicines, including treatments for malaria, but I have not had luck finding how it is connected to Dengue specifically.
Next up: Japanese Encephalitis
Tumblr media
I found the artist statement for this disease as well. The disease is visualized into three characters that form a pop group, with their names reflecting the 3 main Culex mosquito species that spread Japanese encephalitis in Taiwan, which are Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Three), Culex annulus (Ring), and Culex fuscocephala (Shiro). They wear black and white, like the colors of the Culex mosquitoes. Red accessories represent their love for blood. I don’t have much to add outside of the artist explanation.
Last one for now is: Rabies
Tumblr media
I found the explanation for this one, but it is not descriptive at all, so I am going to be going into every detail because this is Rabies. The spikes on the jacket and pant legs represent the protein spikes rabies uses to infect nerves. The blue jacket and gloves are representing water as one of the unique characteristics of rabies is hydrophobia (physical repulsion to water). The claw marks on the shirt show the animalistic tendencies the virus brings out. The violin players in the animal mask show how the virus can hide in these animals. The personification of rabies is holding a conductor’s wand showing how rabies controls those who are infected. The teeth necklace shows how it spreads through bites and they are standing on the brain because that is what rabies infects. He has a chain with mammal skulls once again tying back to rabies being a fatal mammalian disease. The belt buckle has a bone on it as bone are associated with bones and rabies is associated with dogs.

ames my dearest, i have a question
i could've sworn you mentioned some kinda mods that enhance either ur physical or mental abilities
like i think i read abt hypatia getting a memory boost? sorry if i got that wrong i'm asking purely based off my memory
so anyway i was wondering if this is common in attollo or something only really available for rich people - is it comparable to plastic surgery for us?
is it frowned upon or seen as a display of wealth/strength? do people who get it keep it a secret (bc it's considered shameful to have to resort to mods to be strong/better) or is it super common (like working out to improve yourself) and do most citizens have some type of mods?
are they also physical (so cosmetic/plastic surgery) or is it mostly to boost skills like memory or speed?
sorry for the lengthy ask LMAOO have a good one
Don't apologize for lengthy asks I EAT this shit up fr
You're right!! Hypatia has had cybermodifications done (a lot, actually), as have a few other Generals (like Azizi). Markos has not, though, which is very hm.
It's definitely more for the... wealthy, which brings in some interesting issues of privilege that has been a hot topic in Attollo since cybermodifications really became "mainstream". It's essentially like a plastic surgery, but more technical, and a lot of the people who do these surgeries need excess certifications beyond what plastic surgeons need.
It isn't frowned upon by everyone, although it's definitely met backlash because it caused the issue of bias for employment. Employers are more likely to select someone with powered abilities fitting the job, then someone with a cybermod fitting the job, and then someone with neither; this, too, is a hot issue in Attollo that's been picked up in recent years. You won't find a lot of people with mods unless someone has paid for it, they have the money themselves to afford it, or they get black market mods from the Under City, which in itself is a high-risk venture.
Most mods are with purpose, like Hypatia's, or one's done to repair cataracts/non-congenital blindness. But some people get them just for the flair, like what Azizi did. Those are more for a show of wealth then anything else. So most people don't hide that they've had work done.

Izumi being Toph’s daughter could be the reason for her glasses.
No, really.
Okay just follow my crazy for a moment.
No one in Zuko’s family wears glasses, right? And Mai throws knives which requires sharp eyesight to do accurately. So why does Izumi have vision problems?
Let’s consider what probably caused Toph’s blindness. She says she was born blind, so we know it’s congenital. Her eyes appear opaque which sounds like cataracts. Toph mostly likely has congenital catatacts.
Predispositions to congenital cataracts do run in families. If Izumi inherited this condition, she would need immediate surgery to save her sight. Delaying surgery results in the eye never developing properly due to missing out on sunlight, which still results in blindness. But if Izumi’s was caught earlier, they could’ve surgically removed the cataract.
It may sound too advanced but there have been rudimentary catarcter surgies in India since 5th century BC. In ATLA they could even use bending to improve the prognosis!
If all goes well, the only long lasting side effect would be the need for corrective lenses.
Like glasses.
Hello! And thanks for the question!
This is a very interesting theory, but I believe that Izumi is Mai's daughter. She and Mai are practically look like the same person. She also resembles her grandmother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately I don’t know much about  hereditary eye problems, (but if happens that someone who reads it knows some factual information about it and can give some links I would be very grateful.)
I don't consider the comics and LOK to be a canon (in fact, you're talking to someone who doesn’t even consider the atla third book to be completely canon because of some terrible writing decisions or how the writers treated some of the characters in the third book, especially Zuko , Iroh and Aang, lol🤓). I like to think about LOK as of some sort of AU. And in general, I have almost no doubt that Toph and Zuko actually have a common child in LOK. Like, just look at Lin. She looks like someone from the FN. Her facial expressions, movements, her stubborn, strong personality. Do I at least doubt that Lin is Zuko's daughter? No, for me this is the canon. It's possible that Toph and Zuko got together around the time he and Mai had broken up for a while, or it's even more likely that Zuko widowed and after that he could have got into a long-term relationship with Toph. I don't want to think about Zuko being a widower, or that Mai died - I adore Mai, she's my best girl, my second favorite female ATLA character after Toph. And I LOVE maiko. But we know that in LOK Sokka died early, and Aang died quite early, so anything is possible. But, in any case, Zuko and Toph could have had a long relationship, nothing in LOK contradicts that version. As I recall, Toph mentioned that Lin's father's name was Kanto. Imagine: Zuko secretly dating a woman who doesn't want to be drawn into FN court undercover games, so he sends her love letters and sign them as "Kanto", and there is someone who reads these letters to Toph. God, I love that.
However, Izumi is definitely Mai's daughter.
But this is a very interesting theory, thanks for sharing it!

Yeah anon is not fully correct about Jay's eyes. There can be a multitude of reasons. Jay 100% could have cloudy blue eyes. In which case his blindness would've likely been caused by congenital cataracts. You're fine.
ok good to know! I think I will do some research and decide on an actual condition for Jay (and maybe Shrike too?) so I have a good idea of how I should design him later on!

I have always been annoyed by the persistent, “whited-out eye” appearance blind characters are given to signal, hey, look, they’re blind! This isn’t an issue exclusive to Warriors, but, I’m pointing this out in the context of the Warriors community.
The closest thing this design choice replicates is cataracts as far as I am aware, and, well, not every person who has visual impairments or has blindness has cataracts. I find this design choice more forgivable for characters like Rock, which, they may very much had developed with age or maybe Longtail if you will to interpret him with traumatic cataracts. If this is the case - more often than not (if at all, I have never heard contrary), this does *not* lead to utter and complete, the lights are off, blindness.
With that in mind, how Jayfeather and characters like him are interpreted, it starts to irritate me. Although congenital (at birth) cataracts do exist, the stated impact on vision from prior makes that a sole feature to not be relied upon for characters that are distinctively without any vision. This isn’t to say to completely remove these things, or even that I am a monolith of opinion here, but rather this is an invitation to look into alternative ways to design these characters, or original characters, with a broader scope of options in mind.
Personally, my main reference for this sort of thing is a tumblr user mimzy-writing-online, who has a series on depicting characters who are visually impaired or blind. Feel free to add onto this ask - I am not visually impaired or blind, I simply have an interest in medical, and opinions from people who can properly have a say would be appreciated.

Bobtober Day 26 - Remove
Tina removing her glasses.
Because the actual drawing for this was so quick and simple I experimented a lot with different things like varied line weight and color. I also tried to mimic double vision a little.
I’m sure it’s been said but for Tina to have needed glasses from infancy there has to be something going on with her eyesight. It’s also been implied that her vision is getting (slightly) worse and she’s both extremely near sighted and farsighted although it does seem like she has corrected 20/20 vision so it’s unlikely she has something that can only be fixed with surgery like cataracts. She also doesn’t show any signs of visual abnormalities (except for possible microphthalmia, but this could simply be artistic). Regardless she has some sort of congenital eye condition for sure.

Image of a blind character with dark skin, curly hair. He is wearing a suit vest with detailed raised patterns, carved buttons with butterflies and made of glowing emerald.
Paragraph one: Funny and a little sassy, empathetic Ramiro is a bright addition to the Madrigal household. He love his adopted family dearly.
Inset Picture of happy young Ramiro with congenital cataracts.
Text block: Memento from parents
Antonio had instructed and trained a melanistic jaguar to act as a seeing-eye-animal. He names her Chia.
Ramiro was born with congenital cataracts. Which due to being born to poor parents, they were unable to get him the surgery in time to avoid permanent damage.
When he was young he could sense some light and shapes, but as he aged all he could sense was movement. He wears the glasses due to light sensitivity, but also he has been assured they are particularly cool looking.
Ramiro has an appreciation for fashion like Elena. When she started making, or buying clothes for him. Not only did she choose fabrics that had interesting textures (or Mirabel adding embroidery), but Agustin had it impeccably tailored. He can't see the final look, but he likes the compliments he gets.
Ramiro doesn't receive his gift right away, but rather when he feels he is truly a Madrigal.
His gift is empathetic touch, which allow him to sense emotions tied to objects. But it also allow him to communicate directly with Casita.
Inset picture of young adult Ramiro with black melanistic jaguar: description text.
Antonio had instructed and trained a melanistic jaguar to act as a seeing-eye-animal. He names her Chia.

*makes my first smurfs oc since middle school* oops
info + id below cut
This is Smurfcamellia! Also known as Camellia, and mostly just Cam. She's athletic, loyal, and competitive, but also reckless, impatient, and inattentive. (Basically, the Tuffy to Storm's Hefty, right down to having a deep... *admiration* of the other character :P)
She was born with congenital cataracts, so while she can still see colors, everything is extremely fuzzy and faded. Willow made sure she never felt like she couldn't do things so she never thought of her blindness as an issue (although, she does get annoyed when people move things around without warning). She uses a magnifying glass to read and write - at least, she's supposed to, but most of the time she's left it at home. (And even at home, she swears she left it on the desk. Or the table? (narrator voice: somehow, it was in the pantry.))
Camellias are one of my favorite flowers specifically bc I always find them blooming in the park in the middle of winter when all the other plants are dead, so I'm translating that into Cam having a freakishly high cold tolerance and LOVE of ice cream. It's her life goal to eat every ice cream flavor on Earth. (Her current favorite is Strawberry.)
bonus since I was playing around with the incorrect quotes generator
[ID: several colored digital drawings of a female Smurf with short wavy blue hair, freckles, a tan dress, a light pink vest, a black belt, tan shoes and a tan hat with a pink flower. In the first image she is smiling with one hand on her hip and holding a white cane with the other. In the second image she is kicking a soccer ball with a look of concentration on her face. The soccer ball has musical notes coming out of it. The third image is her from the waist up in her regular clothes, smiling next to another female Smurf with long hair, wearing a thick pink jacket and shivering as snow falls around them. The fourth image is her standing next to a large old-fashioned radio with her cane folded into her belt, wearing corded headphones and listening curiously. The radio is brown and has white tape near the switches and dials. The fifth image is her holding a mint chocolate ice cream cone and looking down at it while smiling with her tongue out. The sixth image is of her home, a dome-shaped structure covered in green leaves with a dark pink curtain for the door and window, a bush with purple flowers under the window, a rope fence around the perimeter, and black and yellow striped paint at the entrance to the property where the bridge starts. At the top corner is the lesbian flag, graysexual flag, and ADHD flag. There is also her signature, which is written in large cursive with the letters squished close together, and a list of likes and dislikes that read "Likes: sports, ice cream, flowers (especially fragrant ones), Storm. Dislikes: sitting still, reading, people moving things around." /End ID.]

In Baltimore, MD: Eden is a 1 year old, 45 pound, intact male Lab mix that is behaviorally great, but unfortunately has a laundry list of medical issues that need to be addressed that cannot be completed at a shelter. Eden’s initial vet had multiple findings that did not appear addressed and were present when he came to the shelter. These findings were: Eden presented to the shelter with medical history showing numerous medical defects that were likely congenital and were noted during his first puppy visit. On February 28, 2023 Eden was seen by the primary care veterinarian for a puppy examination and vaccinations and exhibited the following abnormal findings: 1. Significantly smaller than littermate sibling (10 pounds lighter) 2. Dull mentation, slow to react to presence of veterinary staff in room 3. Buphthalamos (bulging) eyes, with full cataract involving lens, negative menace response (response to motion indicating visual impairment) 4. Mild underbite 5. Uncomfortable gait, markedly stiff in hind end, needs help to rise. 6. Thickened elbows, bowing/twisting of forelimbs, slow and abnormal gait in front 7. Flaccid penis out of prepuce On examination at the shelter, the dog is still exhibiting all of the above defects. Further evaluation by a veterinary board certified neurologist and orthopedist is recommended as soon as possible.
Eden is Nova's littermate.

having congenital cataracts as an autistic person is lowkey a super power. wym you can't handle the big ceiling light. Weak. Like I KNOW if my vision were perfect I'd HATE it. But I got awful low-light vision & i can't see without it. Genearations of autism and my eyes evolved built in sunglasses. #builtdifferent

30 Days of Them, Day 14
What is something that without Their help, you feel you wouldn't have been able to do?
Cope with everything with my health and trauma and... everything. Honestly. Would I have been able to do it without Her? Probably. But I think I'd be much worse off for it.
I had a long post written out about all the medical procedures I had, but that'll be better suited for its own post.
CW: medical trauma, eye surgery mentions, toxic family mentions.
Long story short: I went through a period of about three years where I had to have a bunch of eye surgeries for glaucoma/retinal detachments/cataracts (from the other surgeries). And then I had to have vocal cord implants after a congenital heart issue appeared in adulthood, which presses against the nerve to my left vocal cord, paralyzing it. My doctors for all of these things are/were incredible, I was really lucky. Unfortunately, a lot of eye surgeries are done while you're mostly awake, and the recovery... isn't fun, so it was still traumatizing.
Also around this time I also really started to understand how toxic my family is, especially my mom and her sister. I now realize that this is also likely why I stayed at my incredibly toxic job for so long. I now believe that all of that stress, combined with over-exercising/over-committing myself, contributed to my body basically trying to self-destruct.
She has held space for me throughout all of this, and while she may not feel like a warm, cozy home like Brigid does, she feels like a safe, protective fort where I can put aside everything else and rest. Or cry and scream and feel without judgment. She is incredibly supportive of me in a way I haven't experienced (outside of my wife, but it's still different), and helps me question the old 'programming' of my childhood. I trust her now to know that when she tells me that something is bad for me, she is right. She has helped me trust myself by loving and believing in me. I know that not everything has to be some kind of grandiose gesture for it to matter- I don't have to be perfect, just show up. With her and just in general. All of this is why, after some 'normalcy' finally settled in a few years ago, I dedicated to her after years of one-year devotions.
