On the S5 finale and the writers' intentions for Adrien's story arc

This post is going to discuss non-spoilery info from leaked material that wasn't explicitly stated in the finale as it aired.

Full disclosure: I think the leaks were a collossal dick move, but I looked up the spoilers because I knew there was an 80% chance I'd be exposed accidentally and I'd rather do it on my own terms. I'm not going to discuss my own thoughts on the content of the leaks, but in light of the reception of the S5 finale as it's going around on my dash right now, there are two elements from them that are very relevant for how to interpret the ending and speculate the way forward after this.

First: Emilie was meant to be revived. This is stated in leaked scripts, and shown in the animated storyboards.

Second: The bible states that Adrien NEVER learns that Hawk Moth was his father.

Per the lore as explained in "Ephemeral", the only way for Emilie Agreste to now be alive, is to re-write the timeline so that she never died in the first place. Since Nathalie also survived, the thing changed by Gabriel's wish must've been the peacock miraculous: either it never broke, or it was fixed by the time Emilie used it. (yes, this means that Colt also didn't die from it, make of that what you will)

In other words: The original intention was to re-write Adrien's entire life into one where his mother never died, and where his father's poor treatment of him would never escalate to the points it did in the timeline depicted in S1-5. When Adrien in the utopian universe left from Gabriel's wish wonders if he can live up to his father's memory - a heroic legacy which the show's heroine hasn't merely tolerated, but actively endorsed - that was meant to be the end of his battle against his father, and in this re-made universe, probably a merited one.

The Adrien of this new timeline was never shipped off to London, so even IF he fought Nighttormentor, he wouldn't have torn into him about being a bad father. In this timeline, Gabriel wasn't. Adrinette's first kiss on the air strip - yeah, that's gone too, along with a number of meaningful incidents that only happened because of things Gabriel specified Adrien shouldn't remember. Near everything that made Adrien into the boy who turned into a catboy to escape an intolerable home life is gone - when Emilie never grew ill and died, Adrien's life must've been a thoroughly happy one.

The idea that Adrien would live his entire life loving and admiring his father was set in the minds of the writers for long enough to make it into a late state of the story production. Obviously the leaked material isn't the canon text; there are several smaller discrepancies between the leaks and the episodes that aired. The fact that these things were in the bible is not to say that the writers won't have changed their mind for S6.

If they did change their minds and decided to follow up on this in s6: Good for them.

But until we're given explicit confirmation that that is Amelie at the pool party, we're going to have to live with the possibliity that Adrien's character arc never happened to him.

Anyway all jokes aside, the ending still feels a bit inconsequential seeing that no one dies in the final battle, considering how the rest of the show was. Eren's still a coward and a pussy and his inability to act with decisiveness is the reason shiganshina (and presumably the rest of Paradis) is inevitably destroyed, it also proves the Jaegarists point that no matter what happens theyll never stop trying to wipe out eldians, even centuries after titans are wiped out. Eren lied to the people of Paradis and got them killed so like 8 people could live half decent lives cleaning up his mess, most hollow victory of all time. Over all its like a 7/10 ending, there isnt any other way it really could have ended comsidering the story. The new paradis emblem is so fucming cool tho holy shit. Get Rumbled Stay Humbled.

A “She Was Pretty” Review:

Background Meta

I discovered the trailer for this drama last year when I was *cough* trying to drown myself in KDramas as I avoid a British Spy-Themed TV Event with one Sexualized Nerd-Hunk that just gave me collossal headaches... *cough* ANYWAY. I just finished “Personal Preference” at long last, since I started it around 2013 and didn’t finish it... till three years later due to... real life things. Unfortunately, due to other unforseen real life things, I didn’t manage to watch “She Was Pretty” last year as well. 

This year, it just suddenly popped up in my mind while trying to find something to watch: “What’s the title of that KDrama again where there’s this weird girl who had this hot pixie-ish haircut dancing about in this pool-side party? And she was ugly?” I had to check out this KDrama list of “Best Dramas” per year -- and I found my answer.

Spoilers ahead!

Characters

Kim Hye Jin - I love the fact that she really is pretty -- freckles, frizzy hair and all. I was like -- “Okay just a little hairstyling like a ponytail or half-ponytail of some sort, and she’d be fine without having a full makeover.” And with someone who’s got untameable hair, Hyejin-a is someone very relatable. She’s also a kind person and has this knack for efficiency when working -- something I can also relate to. 

Though yes, my mother (whom I also dragged into watch this series) was right: Hye Jin is over the top sometimes with how she reacts to things around her. Some of her quirks seem to be overdone too, like the way she makes that sound with clucking her teeth when she’s nervous. I mean sure, she’s weird and all -- but no need to overdo it. It just made the first few episodes a bit too much for someone who isn’t fond of slapstick humor (like my mother). Fortunately, its the slapstick humor that made me stay. It is my thing anyway. XD

Despite the whole predictable “makeover plot”, I love how Hye Jin turned out to be a writer at the end, loving her work. And she keeps her curly hair and freckles! I would say her journey through MOST makes it worthwhile, and I love how she managed to interact with everyone who was with her along the way.

Ji Sung Joon - I haven’t been watching a lot of KDramas lately, but I saw clips of “Kiss Me, Heal Me” (where both Hwang Jung-eum and Park Seo-Joon also starred) and I realized that the other reviewers were right: The whole “stoic, cold-hearted” characterization just doesn’t fit Park Seo-Joon. Although I understand that it was all for plot... but did Sung-Joon really need to be that harsh?!

And what happened to that sweet, quiet overweight boy at the start? What was it that turned him into this rich, stoic, and cold-hearted man whom Hye Jin meets again? I wish we saw more of what transformed Sung-Joon to what he was now. I mean we were shown the backstory of his mother dying and how he was bullied when he transferred to the US... but I wish there was more to support his character.

Yes, I understand he was being keen on getting Most to the top spot. Yes, I know he needed to succeed or else MOST Korea would close down and that would spell doom for his career in MOST NYC. But did he really have to be that harsh?! I feel like all that effort of being crude and strict we as all for naught since it turns out that it would have worked better if he was transparent with the MOST Editing Team and collaborated with them in the process. The fact that he was still terrorizing his team at the end made me wonder if the whole character development was worth it.

But once he finds out the truth about Hye Jin and (Ha Ri as well), he suddenly turns into this sweet guy who just loves his childhood sweetheart so much and it was easier for me to watch Sung-Joon go about. I just wish he didn’t just go through the whole “POOF! I’M A SWEETHEART NOW!” transformation after all the harshness Hye Jin had to go through. They could have characterized his coldness as a facade and was truly sweet and gentle underneath it all.

However, Sung-Joon’s flaws are hilarious. The fact that he can barely hear anything when he’s holding his tablet that he’s reduced into drinking water from vases thinking its his coffee and slamming nose-first into elevator doors and glass walls made him a bit more well-rounded as a character.

Min Ha Ri - I love how Ha Ri was a well-rounded character, not your typical antagonistic second lead. Her friendship with Hye Jin is something amazing -- something you don’t usually find in frikking dramas lately. But I’ll discuss that later. I love how Ha Ri serves as Hye Jin’s foil somewhat: being that rich, cool, pretty best-friend whom all the boys line up for. And yet, despite getting everything she ever wanted, she’d drop everything for her “wifey” Hye Jin. 

I understand that the whole conflict in the plot was construed by her and Hye Jin and they do take responsibility for it. And I give her credit for stretching her neck as far as she could just so she can tell Jung-Soon the truth, despite being blocked every single time she tries. It just so happens that she fell in love with Jung-Soon too... and I suddenly had my heart going out to her.

“He was my first love too.” Her stomach cramps spelled her guilt for it all. The way she bounces back and becomes supportive for Hye Jin just shows how her friendship with her is solid. Her dedication to claim her future and shape her own destiny by giving up everything that wasn’t hers: from her clothes, her car, and the job where her father shoe’d her in just shows how Ha Ri has integrity. And I love it when she perseveres through the end.

As much as I do wish she ended up with someone (like Shin-hyuk), I think her ending suits her. <3

Kim Shin-Hyuk - Seriously, I wasn’t a Choi Siwon fan when I walked into this fandom. I did walk out as one. 

THIS LIL SH** STEALS THE SHOW!!!

I swear, if it weren’t for Shin-Hyuk’s little quirks and Choi Siwon’s perfect comedic timing then I don’t know... He makes everything worthwhile and bearable when the second-hand embarrassment is too much from Hye Jin and when I think that Ha Ri is losing her conscience. I mean, Reporter Kim even brought out the humanity out of the cold Jung-Soon!

And they were right how Siwon’s acting spectrum came out with Shin-Hyuk: he shifted from goofy to someone scarred and hurting inside in SECONDS. Those scenes after the motorcycle accident where he goofs around to cheer Hye Jin up while trying to hide the fact that he’s still receiving treatment for his wounds are just one of his milestones.

Even his catchphrases such as calling Hye Jin as “Jackson” is just too precious. 

Although I do have quite the second-lead syndrome, I don’t think he’s perfect for Hye Jin. I believe that with how gullible Hye Jin is, his quirkiness would just cause her much stress. And from the start you just knew that Hye Jin already chose Jung-Soon... Although he may be a perfect match for Min Ha Ri, I think the latter and Reporter Kim should be at least stand alones. Well, for these relationships, I’ll elaborate further later on.

I do wish that there’s a happier ending for Reporter Kim though.

Honorable Mentions:

Kim Ra Ra - Aside from Reporter Kim, the deranged yet chic Chief Editor of Most Korea takes the cake in comedy! She’s like a hilarious version of Miranda Priestly of “Devil Wears Prada” without the utter devastation and filled with crazy crack. I swear she steals the show everytime she’s on screen (along with that upbeat track just made for her - Shung! Shung! Shung!) whether she’s speaking in some European Language of God Knows What, throwing her stuff about and expecting them to be caught, or flirting with guys who are 20 years her junior.

Plot

This story has three major ongoing plots ongoing:

Hye Jin and Ha Ri concocting this plot of making the latter appear as the former in front of Sung-Joon due to Hye Jin's insecurities

Sung-Joon's attempt to rekindle his friendship/romance with childhood friend Hye Jin

MOST Korea's attempt to break through the charts and end up as #1 in sales in three months

Imagine the reader being super shy and jack wilder likes her so he drags her along the adventures bcs he likes her

You close your eyes as you take in a breath, the smell of salt and humidity along with the sound of the waves hitting the boat helping your shoulders relax. A small smile creeps up on your lips just as you flutter your eyes open, your pupils now observing the town on the horizon slowly coming closer and closer. You cross your arms over the stern, your body lunching towards the water.

‘The ride’s almost over.’

Echoes of admiring voices come to your ears, your head turning upward to your left to take a look at the boat’s second floor. Your lips stretch onto your cheeks when you notice a familiar face standing in a crowd, the young giving out one of his cheeky grins as he showcases another one of his “magic trick”. His eyes turns to you for a second, his grin widening as he sends you a wave. It’s enough to bring a heat wave to your cheeks, your head turning back towards the water so you can at least hide your emotions.

When Jack asked you to tag along to one of his “work” days, you weren’t quite expecting him to take you on a boat ride around town. This was different than his usual shows in the park or on the streets, but you were quite enjoying this. People were a little less loud than in town, and the environment let your mind think rather peacefully.

You breathe in and out slowly, your eyes sweetening as you think of the boy. You’ve only known him for a few months, but he’s already taken you to lots of places. He never seems to want to leave you alone, and thus, despite your collossal shyness. Thanks to him, you’ve actually managed to gain a little more confidence in yourself; though, you’ve also gained other types of feelings towards him.

“Thief!” You jump up at the sound of a voice screaming, your head snapping back towards Jack, only to see that he’s left behind an angry crowd. “He’s a thief! Someone stop him!”

“There you are!” You give out a yelp when Jack grabs your wrist as he runs past you, the young man rapidly dragging you across the boat to get to the town’s nearest bridge. “Let’s go!”

You scream when he grabs onto your waist and picks you up, forcing to jump from the boat to land on the bridge. He follows you soon after, grabbing onto your wrist once more to run through the streets this time.

“What...” You can barely think because of the loud heartbeat in your head, the crowd’s screaming becoming quiet as you notice a few people trying to run after you. “What did you do?!”

“Just got our money’s worth!” His head turns towards you with his lips stretched into a grin that cuts off your breath, his free hand showcasing a gold watch. “I can finally take you on a nice date! Are you free tonight?”

Your cheeks heat up in an instant, and you can’t help but feel like your mind was just fried. 

“How about you ask me again later?” You take another look behind you, trying to slow down your heartbeat. “You know? When we’re not being chased?”

He gives a laugh at your answer, his hand squeezing yours as he puts the gold watch into his pocket.

“I’ll take that as a yes!”

Any speculations on how Battle of Ice and Battle of Fire will play out in TWOW ?

I have more speculation on the ice threat than on the fire threat.

Ice Threat: Basically, GRRM is going to pull a “Moana” on us. We think the Grand Hero is going to physically battle the Evil Villain, but in the end, it turns out the little quasi-sidekick of ancient lineage (who has already had to give up their big dream and served their people as a young leader in turbulent times) ends up solving the conflict through righting an ancient wrong, incidentally commited by the Grand Hero. It’s not about victory, it is about harmony. 

Bran is, obviously, Moana. Maui, the ancient demigod, would represent whatever the original reason for the conflict was, which might actually be related to a collossal screw-up by the original Stark, resulting in a stalemate that necessitated the creation of the Wall. But he would also represent the false expectation that a prophecied hero will win a literal battle to solve the issue. 

We will see this endgame foreshadowed with Arya and Lady Stoneheart. It is Catelyn who introduces us to the godswood, who has her closest attachment to Bran, who is a voice of reason and negotiation until she turns into a vengeful distortion of herself. Arya has many parallels to Bran, including hanging out in an underground weirwood cave, and I used to think this meant she would be integral to the ice threat solution herself, but given time constraints, I think she might be more essential in giving us the preview version with Catelyn, and utilising her warging and spying skills to play a role in wrangling that humanitarian mess in the Riverlands until she returns North and/or reunites with her siblings, probably connected to Howland Reed and his many secrets. I see her playing a role in battling Dany, because Dany is the harbinger of all the horrors of war that Arya witnessed in ACOK and ASOS. 

Jon will be integral to the logistical preparations for battle - and likely there will be physical battling until the resolution is achieved - but his main arc is one of political leadership and conflicts of identity, so I do see him heading South to try and gain allies and then becoming mired in the fire threat.

Fire Threat: Basically a Dance of Dragons 2.0, and a roll-back of Targaryen power all the way to the little “Doom of Old Valyria” that will play out in King’s Landing. 

Aegon will be the hope spot. A decent Targaryen who was - crucially - not raised by other Targaryens, so he isn’t psychologically crippled the way Dany is. Making alliances, opening that incest-exceptionalism up to embrace his non-Targ half: Elia and her Dornish legacy, the shining example where Targaryens intermarried for peace and it led to the creation of something as life-affirming as the watergardens. Since Aegon combines the Martell and Targaryen grudges against the Lannisters, he will likely spell bad news for Cersei (who may flee to Casterly Rock) and set up in KL, a tease of Targaryen restoration. 

Enter Dany and her total respect for proper procedure and her total lack of experience in “usurping” the legal heir (Viserys) and her absolute committment to not abusing the firepower inherent in her “children”. Aegon will die via Dany.

Somewhere between these two: Jon, throwing his hands up in despair, yelling “Can SOMEONE pay attention to the ice threat and the starvation??” It might be he is in contact with the two of them in succession: Aegon like with Stannis, Dany follows as Selyse. The former a quasi-positive but tense relationship, the latter internally hostile and outwardly appeasing. Jon will want to leave the South to defend House Stark but be prevented. Political!Jon will possibly ensue. House Stark will eventually come to him. Somewhere in there RLJ will explode like a box of conflict sparkles. 

Dany will be defeated in a complex mess of conspiracy, battle and betrayal, but best-laid plans will go awry because of bad communication and conflict of interest (Tyrion) and KL will pay the Price before she is stopped.

The scale of the destruction will call for a Great Council in Harrenhal to decide the future of the Five Kingdoms: Riverlands, Vale, Westerlands, Reach and Stormlands. (minus the North and Dorne, the Iron Islands are a loose thread). This would place the Riverlands and the Tully-based family connections front and center: Vale and Riverlands closely related via Tully mothers, there’s a family connection to the North and friendship extending to the Iron Islands. We don’t know who will rule the Reach but it might as well be a friendly Tarly, since the Tyrells are likely to perish. Who will inherit the Westerlands? Not a Lannister, unless it’s Joy Hill. Stormlands? New leader as well. We’re looking at a wide open playing field that doesn’t make it impossible for a boy as well-connected as Bran to be chosen king of a new, parliamentary monarchy, based in Harrenhal.

Or something along those lines.

EDIT: Too late, guys; some mutuals have told me about the script, and ohh boy, what a shitshow that was.

I'll spare you of the horrors, but I'll reveal you just one dreadful nugget of information:

In the reboot, the Professor (named "Drake" in the script) sells his daughters to a company, making them child stars, starring in a colorful and entertaining cartoon (the OG cartoon, btw).

So yeah, in this universe, the beloved cartoon that we grew up with, the simple but fun lessons that we've learned from it, the healthy relationship that the girls had with their father figure, were all nothing but one big fat lie.

I can't even begin to fathom the collossal amount of disrespect in this. It's even bigger than FATE!

EMMA REALLY IS SELFISH. (RAY TOO BUT HE'S MORE SUBTLE)

At least, when it comes to Norman. Mainly, anyway.

Because darn it these parallels are here again wrecking havoc in my mind and showing, emphasizing what we may have missed before.

I didn't see it before. But this. This is really really selfish.

In this scene Emma was willing to throw away everything. She was risking every single thing they have planned for for months to escape.

It wasn't a heroic moment. It wasn't a moment where the main character was upright and courageous, doing the right thing for the greater good. Because it wasn't the right thing to do. Norman's shipment was the way to go. (Even Ray who loves Norman maybe as much as Emma did had accepted this) Emma's plan of letting him escape in front of mama wasn't.

It was a pure act of selfishness. She didn't want to lose him. And she was losing him. He was going to die and whatshouldshedo?

Emma is a smart girl. She knows what she was doing. She knew the consequences if she succeeded. And even then, she did it anyway.

She had been willing to expose the very device everybody needed to escape. Her leg, that was very much important if she ever hoped to make it out of GF. Ray's six years of planning.

All of it was negligible compared to Norman's life. She was willing to sacrifice it all: Her chances of survival, Ray's six years, Everybody's means for escape.

It was selfish. Stupidly selfish that even Norman snapped at her for what she tried to do.

She didn't succeed here. Norman was shipped out. And she believed he was dead.

I might be bias because I love Norman and everything, but reading the arc after the escape, I think a part of Emma died with Norman.

Even after finding out about Connie's, and those who were shipped out before death, Emma still managed to be herself. She was genuinely happy and hopeful and simply a burst of sunshine and kindness. All of them were going to escape. They would all make it out of there alive.

She was Emma. She was awake to the reality of this harsh world, but she was whole. Complete. She was strong. With him by her side, they would all make it out of GF.

They had lost many but they would move on. Move forward.

But his death hit her hard. Connie's and their other siblings' death couldn't compare. Norman was different. He always had been. It was like she lost a part of her. Maybe she did.

With Norman, the brain, the man with the plans, the stronghold, gone, they needed someone else to be their torch to guide them. While very tactical and independent, Ray was never a leader. He was a supporter. He was the ace. He was an important key but he was never the one to open the door. So, Emma had to step up to fill up Norman's role.

She had to fill Norman's shoes. Had to be strong. Had to be the family's new guide to this unknown world. But... was she still whole?

In GF, it was like she was looking at a future. A future for all of them to live on. To live happily with everyone.

But after his death, she was moving forward for the mere sake of her family. To keep them alive. It wasn't very optimistic anymore. It was selfless. She devoted her life for the sake of her family. For their survival. Maybe even for keeping her last promise to Norman. Not for her future happiness anymore.

Emma had to grow out of naiveity. Learned how to hunt. To gather neccesities. To kill. Because she loved her family. And they needed her.

Even in Goldy Pond, she knew she couldn't die. Her family was waiting for her. She had things to do. Cattle children to liberate. A future that would keep them all safe. A promise to uphold.

Time was good to the family. To Emma. Maybe sewed up wounds of the past. She moved on. With Ray, her family and his memory, she moved forward. But we never really see Emma catch her breath, do we? Never really do anything for herself anymore. Never act like her age and make cute little gestures we all loved back at GF. It was always for survival. And it's kind of understandable given the situation. But even then, we see the other kids being really happy, genuinely happy and living.

Even as a leader, she was entitled to do so. Back at GF, she did but now, it was all about plans and actions for Emma.

I think maybe it's because she never really had time to properly grieve him. Between planning for escape and surviving outside, there's little room to hurt. And with all these little kids looking up to her as a pillar of support, she can't manage to show her pain. It's always bottled up; her pain for losing him.

But that changes.

We see in chapter 119 the sweet relief, the explosion of emotion from our sweet little girl who had to mother all her siblings. A throwback to her old self. (We even see her clothes and shoes change back to her past. Can't put it here coz of 10 pic limit.)

The moment she sees him, something clicks. Something breaks and something goes back to place.

For a moment, she forgets. All her plans. Her family. Survival.

Everything. She drops the very pen that kept them alive for years. And rushes forward. Because suddenly, she was whole again. There he is. The part she was missing. Her ultimate regret. Right in front of her. Breathing, smiling, saying her name as he did in her dreams.

For the first time in so long. Emma finally feels. And she feelsfeelsFEELS.

And for a moment, she was herself. Whole, happy and carefree. He was there. And finally, she was given a second chance.

But then... she sees something else.

Something that binds him.

Something that reminds her of how she lost him in the first place.

There was a familiar tug holding him down again. A weight on his shoulders familiar to her own responsibilities but also so collossal in its difference to hers.

She sees him there, the same gentle person he was before, but he was buried in this obligation and desire to build a new and better world for every cattle children.

He was the same but he was so far away. He was here but he wasn't free. It was shipment day all over again. The entire cattle children's fate on his hands.

And she sees. Sees how probable it is for her to lose him again. Yeah. There's this fact that genocide is evil and there are other ways (pipe dreams) to liberate cattle children but in this scene...

Emma just doesn't want him to go away again.

And she may have to lose him again. For good this time. May it be his life or humanity there's a really big chance that she's losing him in exchange of complete liberty.(I've discussed this on my post about Norman's 0 love for himself).

She's a smart girl. She knows the consequences of her deliberately opposing Norman's plans.

Knows how little their chance of survival in her plans compared to his. But her plans doesn't include mass murder.

Her plans doesn't include him sacrificing himself.

To put it roughly, her plans saves cattle children less and Norman more and demons most haha.

Because, noone would lose anything in Norman's plan. There is only gain for their growing family. And everybody else approves. Ecstatic, even. Only Norman has to bear this weight. And he was willing to do so.

But Emma (and Ray) wasn't. She can't.

So Emma decides. She's selfish again. Wants for her happiness again. She risks everything again. For this pipe dream of hers.

Because she can't lose him for a second time. Can't sacrifice this newfound wholesome.

In chapter 130, she finally admits. She was finally able to be honest and carefree to show her family her feelings about GF escape. How it wasn't a success. Because he wasn't there.

Here, Emma was finally herself again. Her bottled up feelings are all out in the open. We see a different Emma. It's not just for survival anymore.

She sees a future again. Where Norman is there. She hopes not only for lives saved. But for smiles too. She's hopeful again.

That's why she leaves. She bears a little of his weight he carries because his freedom means hers as well.

Norman brought back Emma's sense of self again. It's more than just her family now. Because he's alive. The chain of regret she's carried for so long is cut down. And there's something to look forward to again.

And she's selfish enough not to let him give himself for the sake of cattle children.

She's selfish enough to fight for her desire to keep him. Selfish enough to fight even him to save him from himself.

Because Emma isn't having this. She's not losing him. Never again.

Emma is selfish. If it meant him returning to her with no new series of burdens and decisions to atone for, then she's willing to drag everybody and gauge this pipe dreams of her into reality.

And she repeatedly admits it.

This stubborn, bull-headed girl we love isn't gonna lose him. Not this time. Never again. So look out Norman.

I applaud this girl for giving much love to the boi who needs it as much as he deprives himself of it. (And that Ray loves both Norman and Emma to support her in this.)

Spider-man Homecoming: A Safer Spin?

So, earlier I made a huge analysis post of my favorite moments in the Spider-man movies that showcased the character’s depth. I’ve seen Homecoming today, and after sitting and thinking about it, I’d like to talk about something that at first, dissapointed me, until I looked at it from a different perspective. Now, first I’m going to go over what my big issue with this movie was, then I’m going to talk about why I changed my mind. This is not harsh critisism or discourse, just observations, trust me, Ive got a lot of nice things to say, I just need to point something out first… So if you read my big analysis post (please do, it took me forever to type that all out on my phone!) you’ll notice what I admire most about Peter is his ability to inspire courage in those around him. And something else that defines him is the numerous tragedies he’s endured and how he finds strength and purpose from them. Both of these things were completely missing in Homecoming. Theres no death in Peter’s life here, and rather than inspire others to stand tall, Peter fights his own battles alone in this film. Now there are two instances where he is helped, but both are just bailouts by his high school buddy during a skirmish with Shocker, and Iron Man holding a crumbling ship together. These lack the depth and meaning behind previous instances such as New Yorkers standing between Peter and Doc Ock on the train, or the crane operators helping Spider-man swing to Oscorp Tower fast enough to stop the Lizard. The symbol loses its meaning and becomes merely decorative. It doesnt feel like the city has his back here. And as for the tragedy, look, I agree that we really dont need to see Uncle Ben get shot again, and Im glad we didnt here. But… they couldve at least mentioned it. Im not sure if Ben Parker even exists in this iteration. Which begs the question: why is Peter doing this? He has no established motivation whatsoever. Maguire’s Spider-man had Uncle Ben’s death, Garfield’s Spider-man had the same AND that brilliant scene on the bridge with the boy and his father, but Holland’s Spider-man has… well, nothing. He just does this. Its almost like its just thrill seeking for him. In Civil War, Stark asks him what his motivation is, and we get a small sense of his morality there, but the catalyst behind his vigilantism is never explored any further than that. There was no great tragedy or harsh lesson in great power and great responsibility. Add the fact that nobody dies in this movie, with a very happy ending for all, and we have a Spider-man film that lacks the struggles and hardships of previous Spider-men. So, how is this still one of the best Spider-man films ever made??? Because honestly, my favorite 3 Spider-man movies (in no particular order) are Spider-man 2, The Amazing Spider-man, and Spider-man: Homecoming. Why? Even after these two MAJOR things about the character were absent, I still loved it. I had to think about this for a spell, then it hit me: is it not a breathe of fresh air? Isnt it great seeing Peter succeed and save everyone? And yes, this time he HAD to fight his own battles. That was the point of this movie. Hes not the only superhero around anymore, he needs to prove himself. This is a coming of age movie, and Peter is being guided into the good man we know he will be. While not having a death to affect Peter’s motivation for once might seem strange it allows for a more optimistic Spider-man than we’ve seen before. That being said, in the sequels to come, I want to see him tested. Taken to the breaking point. Theyve built him up, now its time to tear him down, so he can rise and live up to the title. Back into the other point, instead of focusing on him inspiring others, the focus is on him learning to beleive himself. He constantly tries to impress Stark and says he’s nothing without the suit. Later, when he doesnt have the fancy Spider suit anymore, and hes buried under a mountain of rubble, he sees his reflection as Peter Parker AND Spider-Man, does he start becoming the symbol and gains freedom with a display of strength and determination, lifting the collossal debris and rising up. This Spider-man is much different from previous versions, and with how well this was directed, and how on point the humor was, it works perfectly. While its a large aspect, that he fails, the consequences here do not result in his loved ones dying. He’s given a chance to make his mistakes here and the movie can spend more time focusing on the fun. This is by far, the funniest Spider-man film. Humor is always present in his movies, but they were never afraid to get serious, something I hope hasnt been lost under the guidance of Disney. While I understand and enjoy this fresh new take on the Spidey, lets hope they don’t lose the darker depths that defined the character.
