With the way evangelical and fundamentalist Tik-Tok throw around the word "demon" it's very obvious how they want you to feel when confronted with that word- Vulnerable. Helpless. Afraid.

Now I've already touched on the origin of the word "demon" on this blog but today, in terms of any and all malefic entities, I'd like to tell you something-

You are not helpless.

It's true. A malefic entity can be worrying, and bothersome, as well as inconvenient but one thing I've learned in my practice is this- malefic entities are like bears. To scare one off you simply have to convince it that you are the biggest, baddest mother fucker in the woods.

Sometimes you can do this on your own. You can throw down a circle. You can carry some iron, or silver. You can find a holy word that keeps the darkness at bay.

You can do it with help. You can call upon a god. You can summon an angel. You can even make arrangements with another demon.

If you want, you can even pray to the Saints. To the Mother Mary. To Jesus and, yes, even to God- though it certainly doesn't have to be their version.

Helpless?

Please. So many cultures haven't been practicing warding and banishment for centuries, from the mau olhado to Appalachian face jugs, just for some milk-toast, Christian influencer with a Stanley cup to tell their people they are messing with "forces beyond their understanding".

At some point last night (admittedly while h!gh) my partner and I came up with an idea to start a YouTube channel kind of like drunk history, but instead high sermons. And I’m curious to know if this is too niche or if would people actually be entertained by it.

The backstory is that my partner and I were both raised conservative evangelical and have plenty of religious trauma, and we’re always making jokes to process it, especially when we’re high. The sermons get lit (pun intended)

Anyway. Does that sound entertaining??? We’d ofc edit out any boring or nonsensical ramblings and the inevitable moments when I’m super out of it and convinced I can’t move my body at all (does anyone else experience that while high XD)

“In 1992, religiously-motivated conversion therapist Joseph Nicolosi founded the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality. NARTH provided a ‘clinical’ hub for the ex-gay movement, and was a melting pot of pseudoscience ...

“In 2014, after realizing they’d fundamentally (eh, get it?) failed to convince the public that they were anything other than ardent homophobes, and that science had long since moved on to realized that being gay is not only non-pathological, but a natural part of human diversity, NARTH rebranded under the Association for Therapeutic Choice and Scientific Integrity. Like so much of the anti-LGBT, pronatalist far-right, ACTSI refocused on transgender people as part of a political strategy shift to ‘separating the T from LGBT’ ...

“One of the pivotal strategies during the early days of NARTH, was to focus on the specific language of ‘same-sex attraction’ ... Conversion Therapists wanted to inculcate the public with the idea that SSA was a test of one’s moral or religious convictions, but not a part of a person’s innate sexuality ...

"A cursory search of Google’s index of the site shows an alarmingly high rate of results for SSA ... [For mentions of] ‘sexual brokenness’, a term that comes from evangelical Christianity to describe having normal sexual feelings, you get 1,300 results, the overwhelming majority of which are in the United States. Among these results includes Joseph Nicolosi’s son. David Pickup, an LMFT who deals exclusively in the empirically disproven notion that ‘same sex attraction’ is the result of trauma and sexual abuse, is also listed on Psychology Today. Pickup has the distinction of being one of the more prolific purveyors of alleged ‘expert’ testimony on behalf of states like Florida and his home state of Texas.

I cannot express how jarring it was after being raised by a "Porn Addiction Coach" to get into a relationship with a woman and come face to face with the fact that she did actually want me to sexually desire her.

Like, in Evangelical Purity Culture, male desire was basically poison. It was a threat. It was this constant temptation that would destroy everything. And even after leaving, in the sort of queer, feminist spaces i spend most of my time in that wasn't something that pretty much anyone was spending time actively dissuading me from feeling.

But my desire is good. It's not something that I'm being accepted in spite of. It's a positive thing. It's a bonus. Not even just vanilla stuff, all the stuff I'd convinced myself were these weird terrible desires that were shameful to have.

It honestly took me over a decade to fully accept that. To stop dissociating during sex and confront that I was, in fact, being a massive perv and that was fantastic and preferable and that I could accept that into my self-image without shame or self hatred.

But it's important to do. It's important to leave relationships that don't welcome that part of you. To know that your sexuality is valuable and valid and worth owning and celebrating. Because the alternative is just...not being. Either existing as yourself and repressing the part of your identity that is sexual or allowing that sexuality to exist but turning off your self while it does.

In some sense, White evangelicals’ desperate efforts to cling to political power and demand adherence to outdated cultural norms only worsen the problem. Not many 20-year-olds (part of the most diverse, inclusive generation in history, one steeped in climate science and tech) would leap at the prospect of living in a state where abortion is unattainable, gays are ostracized, and secularism is bashed. If Christian evangelicals want to slow their decline, they might consider getting out of the unpopular political ideas market and stressing values that could win back alienated young people (e.g., reverence for conserving the planet, ministering to the poor and the weak). That might put more seats in the pews, although it likely wouldn’t do much for the aging, mostly White, reactionary GOP.
