His Dark Materials where everything is the same except Mrs Coulter’s daemon is the stylish but illegal monkey

I'm thinking about His Dark Materials again. Specifically the societal quirks that Lyra's world has as a result of everyone having their soul manifested outside their body in the form of dæmons. It's one of the most fascinating examples of worldbuilding I've come across tbh
Some of my most favourite tidbits:
Dæmons are named by the dæmons of the child's parents
It's taboo to touch another person's dæmon, but this is learnt, not instinctual
Children often settle arguments through their dæmons, with one accepting the dominance of the other (eg. Pan hissing at Annie's fox daemon in the first book to get her to back down)
The fact that people can tell when someone lacks a daemon even though they can be hidden out of sight (like a mouse in your pocket)
To the inhabitants of Lyra's world, looking at someone without a dæmon is like looking at someone without a head
These extra pieces of lore just make the world seem so magical but believable at the same time

a support group for people with “unconventional” daemons. jeff with his flounder he has to carry everywhere in a huge tank. lois with her poison dart frog everyone is afraid to touch. sam with their elephant that’s the reason they can never go higher than two stories in most buildings.

thinking about daemons as a manifestation of the soul. and also about being a teenager and having a cringey, weird, flexible and unsettled little soul. how many teenagers in a daemons!verse are out there persuading their souls to take a similar shape to their friends' souls? or accidentally mirroring a crush and being teased relentlessly for it? there's got to be kids going no, this is right, this does feel right, with their daemons trying their damnedest to look comfortable in the shape of a little bird, say, because their hero on tv, or in a book, or in a band, has a little dainty bird daemon. and then, years later, a sibling is going to say hey, remember when you decided he was a bird because you had a crush on that singer? about the colossal st bernard flopped over the entire sofa and a terrible pillow fight will ensue because oh my god, shut up, that never happened it's so embarrassing.
sure visible souls are cute and important and say something about you, but it's also the mortifying ordeal of being known when you're a kid and that's the last thing you need

Hmmm…. If I paint this Daemonette’s hair with contrast Talassar blue, it’s just going to drip down her face and onto her clothes.
Unless….

With the way evangelical and fundamentalist Tik-Tok throw around the word "demon" it's very obvious how they want you to feel when confronted with that word- Vulnerable. Helpless. Afraid.
Now I've already touched on the origin of the word "demon" on this blog but today, in terms of any and all malefic entities, I'd like to tell you something-
You are not helpless.
It's true. A malefic entity can be worrying, and bothersome, as well as inconvenient but one thing I've learned in my practice is this- malefic entities are like bears. To scare one off you simply have to convince it that you are the biggest, baddest mother fucker in the woods.
Sometimes you can do this on your own. You can throw down a circle. You can carry some iron, or silver. You can find a holy word that keeps the darkness at bay.
You can do it with help. You can call upon a god. You can summon an angel. You can even make arrangements with another demon.
If you want, you can even pray to the Saints. To the Mother Mary. To Jesus and, yes, even to God- though it certainly doesn't have to be their version.
Helpless?
Please. So many cultures haven't been practicing warding and banishment for centuries, from the mau olhado to Appalachian face jugs, just for some milk-toast, Christian influencer with a Stanley cup to tell their people they are messing with "forces beyond their understanding".

A thing I love about Ku'Gath is that like. When he fell into the cauldron Nurgle was really amused
But meanwhile Ku'Gath is torn up about ruining his father's plans
He took it so hard, bless him

32-KING ASMODAY
Enn:Ayer Avage aloren Asmoday aken
Other names:Asmodeus, Ashmedai, Ἀσμοδαῖος, Asmodaios
The Thirty-second Spirit is King Asmoday, or Asmodai. He appears with three heads, whereof the first is like a bull, the second like a man, and the third like a ram; he also has the tail of a serpent, and from his mouth issue flames of fire. His feet are webbed like those of a goose. He sits upon an Infernal dragon, and bears in his hand a lance with a banner. He teaches the arts of arithmetic, astronomy, geometry, and all handicrafts absolutely. He gives true and full answers when requested. He makes one Invincible. Asmoday can be worked with to make the magician physically stronger and mentally sharp. He shows the place where treasures lie, and guards it. He, amongst the legions of Amaymon governs 72 legions of spirits.
Runyon mentions that he is an ancient Persian demon adopted by the Hebrews and is the child of Tubal-Cain and Naamah. He is also skilled with mathematics.
Call upon King Asmoday for
⬩Art of arithmetic
⬩Astronomy
⬩Geometry
⬩Handicrafts
⬩Invincibility
⬩Love and lust magic
⬩Mathematics
⬩Reveal hidden treasures
⬩Strength mentally and physically
⬩Ask him what else he will work with you on⬩
⊱•━━━━━━⊰In Ritual⊱━━━━━•⊰
Enn:Ayer avage aloren Asmoday aken
Sigil:Posted above
Plant:Mint
Incense:Frankincense
⬩Yellow candles or objects
⬩Ask King Asmoday what he likes⬩
⬩It is important to learn protections before trying to work with any spirits. You can get tricksters and parasites if you don't.
Cleansings- cleaning your space of negative energies. You can burn herbs or incense for this.
Banishings- forcing negative energies out of your space. The lesser banishing ritual is one of the most commonly used.
Warding- wards keep negative energy out of your space. Amulets, sigils and talismans do this.
Set up a your space and do a cleanse and banishing. Have wards up in your home. Meditation is to calm yourself and get your mind ready. The sigil (symbol) is what you draw on paper. The enn is what you chant or say to call forth the spirit.⬩

“The names of the Daemon are many and terrible. A thousand names in a thousand tongues, and each of them a lie.” Daemon name random tables from White Dwarf 102, June 1988, by Mike Brunton and Bryan Ansell, originally appearing in Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness.
